How’s it going today? It’s genuinely proper freezing today. I’m wearing a jumper. Summer really is over, just in time for some super cold evening games. I’m honestly considering the purchase of an Arsene Wenger caterpillar coat. I mean, the visionary thinking behind combining a professional sleeping bag with a jacket… well, on a morning like today is nothing short of inspiring.
News on street today doesn’t amount to much. I made a right hash out of yesterday’s post. There’s no home game tonight. That was a total lie… Which means we don’t have any football to look forward to until tomorrow. Mega.
… sometimes when I blog, you have to accept it’s the thought that counts.
That’s given an extra day for Per and Giroud to recover themselves. Both should be fit for the game which is a massive bonus. An opening away game is always tough, Marseille are sitting in 4th in the league at the moment taking 10 points from their opening 5 games. Take 3 points there and we just done ourselves and chances of qualifying a massive favour. Chasing teams is the not the way forward…
There are rumblings of transfer chat going on. Stories about Arsenal heading back in for Rooney and Suarez is rife. Now, as much as I’m sure that’s our plan, I do hope we’re not going to ask either club if these deals are possible on Jan 1st. If we want these players, lets put the feelers out December 1st and have something in place January 1st.
… a plan. Ahhh… wouldn’t that be sweet? Not a half baked one either. A proper ‘let’s go for it plan’.
Not sure either side would sell a star asset in January. Unless Liverpool are truly broken by then, they wont. Same of United. Unless they start fretting about Rooney and his contract. Either way, premium players come at mega premium prices in January, I mean, Andy Carroll. Need I say more?
I caught Liverpool last night. I wasn’t impressed. I think they have a lot of average players. Though, the transformation of Sturridge into a half decent player has been interesting to watch. They certainly have a bit of pace stored up these days… and Luis Suarez is yet to enter the frame. A team to watch, but baring and injury horror show to us… I’m not sure they’re threatening the top 4.
In other news JuanFran of Athletico Madrid signed a 5 year deal in Spain and said he’d turned down Arsenal this summer. More fool him, Athletico are about £280m in a debt, so I’d be surprised if they don’t come into financial difficulties over the next few years. We landed Flamini in the end, it would have been nice to have the same competition for right back as we do at left back. There you go… I’m not too worried about our set up at the back. Hopefully Vermaelen can up his levels this year and be the best third choice centre back in the league. I’m still shocked we didn’t snap up Sakho. He’s one scary looking beast of a player. He’s a bit off the pace at the moment, but he looks like he could be a smart acquisition for Liverpool.
Right, it’s a seriously dead news day and I have about as much chat in the locker as a seriously unchatty person.
I have Simon Kuper, co-author of Soccernomics on a podcast with me later on this afternoon. I’ll be probing his mind about football and data. How far it’s come over the next ten years, what a good scouting network looks like in a connected world, how to get ahead in football and we’ll probably have a chat around Arsenal and their finances (he’s a Finacial Times journalist).
If you have any questions, tweet me or drop one in the comments.
