Sunday morning is here. I feel fresh as a pack of sewer dried bacon. Yeah, picture that. It wouldn’t be dry. Do you get me? Basically, I’m not feeling fresh. But I’m serving you up a 3 course breakfast of Arsenal deep fried goodness. That’s fresh.
Arsene Wenger set to be awarded a new deal?
For flips sake man. Really? The Mirror are reporting he’ll be offered a two year extension for… wait for it… spending £40m on Ozil. Apparently the genius thinking behind the move is that Ozil only moved to Arsenal because of Wenger.
*Pedro slaps hand to face multiple times as he wrestles with the flaws in the amateur contract award decision making tree Ivan is using…
Now, I’ve been through the reasons you’d want to join Arsenal. Arsene isn’t bigger than the club. So positioning a new deal based on his presence being bigger than Arsenal is a ridiculous reason in the first place. Talk about feeding the ego. Talk about a regressive way of working. I mean, if power is the issue for Ivan, surely dishing out a new deal based on the opinion of a £43m signing who had the choice of us and PSG is farcical.
Which is why I think the story is nonsense… because I know for a fact the club know the issues with Arsene go far deeper than his previous inability to make a decision on an expensive player. Not just that. The summer was a bloody shambles!
… and don’t get me wrong. I think a deal will happen. But I’d guess it’d be the making of Stan. Because surely Ivan wouldn’t put together a new deal until 1) he saw some signs of progress on the playing front 2) saw some action on the shabby backroom team 3) wrestled some infrastructure control back (i.e assess our weak scouting network, take ownership of key coaching employs (sorry Gerry Peyton)).
When you’re in management as a top CEO, you’re supposed to not cave to obvious pressures. The biggest layman pressure at Arsenal would be tying Wenger down to a new deal. Most fans look at David Moyes as a case in point here… but the issue with him is that he’s never won anything of note. He’s clearly not a draw. If Arsene goes, do you think a Jurgen Klopp would struggle to attract players? Do you think Laudrup would be having the same issues Moyes is having?
No way. Using Moyes as a reason to give Wenger a new deal is weak at best. He was a poor decision short term.
So points of concern over the last few seasons when making Arsene the highest paid manager in the league:
Going out of two cups to lower league opposition
Losing 8-2 to rivals because of shocking preparation
Having £500k of wastage on the wage bill
Selling Robin to United
4-4 at Newcastle
Failing to address consistent weaknesses in the side over 8 years
AC Milan away
Failing to make priority signings this summer
Losing out on top targets consistently
Failing to adapt scouting network
Failing to address back room team evolution
Failure to implement modern tech into equation
No trophy for 8 years despite a massive wage bill
Reasons to sign him up:
Top 4 every season
Transfer surplus most seasons
Anyway, happy to him to be rewarded if he pushes us on this year. Until then, the club should take advantage of the fact he’s desperate to stay with us. Take it to February. He’s not going anywhere. He loves the power. He loves the prestige. He loves the unconditional fan love. He loves the privacy…
Couple of other snippets from around the web…
The Sun ask this question: ‘was Ozil too randy for Madrid?’
The jist being that Mesut enjoys having sexual relations with pretty girls… which could have worn him out, thus affecting performance.
… know how you feel Mesut. Know how you feel. The typos in this blog post are testament to that issue.
Gervinho also hammered Arsene for playing him out of position. One day, we’ll sign a winger who wants to play on the wing.
Right. I’m done. See you in the comments.
