Ticketing tech for you and your chums | Dortmund star man on Arsenal radar | Keeper foot in mouth shocker

Arsenal from the boardroom

Morning sports fans, it’s Tuesday, which is technically a Monday to me and my fellow countrymen, so it’s been a tough morning. Real tough.

I missed the Wenger interview on Theo yesterday. The 20 goal man has always harboured ambition to play through the middle, and this season, he’s occasionally made a good case for that. However, Wenger has poured cold water on that dream.

‘He finished in the middle,’

‘I use him on the flank because I try to put a player in the middle who can score goals and having another player on the flank who can score it gives you a little bit of security.

‘He (Walcott) is more mature in his finishing. His goal was similar to the one he scored against Manchester United. It’s a short back lift.

‘He makes good runs and he is calm now in front of goal. When he arrived [from Southampton], in front of goal the ball could go anywhere.

‘Now you see every time he hits the target, he is forcing the keeper into a save.
‘That’s why his numbers are so much better.’

He’s banging them in from outwide because he’s more instinctive in front of goal. For me though, as a striker, he’s a long way from what you need as a loan man. All he really has is pace and a shot. He can’t hold the ball up, he can’t battle  in the air and he doesn’t have that magic a player like Robin has.

So it makes sense we have a high scoring wideman.

Elsewhere, the club are about to announce their new ticketing technology. They’ve been working hard to maximise their IT infrastructure especially in that particular area.

After undertaking fan interviews, they established a few reasons fans don’t sell back to the club. It mainly centred around the worry of who would take your seat. Now, I also highlighted the sad fact that sometimes you can’t give tickets away because we’re not an attractive proposition like we were years ago… but that fell on deaf ears.

Anyway, the solution they’ve come up with centres around a friends and family list of ten. You punch into your member portal who you’d like to give your tickets to. They get an email which lets them print off a hard copy of the ticket. They can buzz into the game on the new barcode enabled ticket booths.

Good times I say. At least all that messing around with plastic tickets is wiped out! However, as I said earlier, my fear is technology isn’t the main cause of empty seats… it’s he product on the pitch.

We’ll see though. What the system does do is open the fanbase up to reward schemes. Arsenal can operate a club card scheme like all the major supermarkets. That gives Arsenal more data to improve consumption and it gives fans a reason to pull their finger out and ensure 100% capacity utilisation on their ticket… because everyone likes 15p of baked beans in the Super Store.

It also highlights the glamour ticket buyers (you know the banks who buy up huge blocks of tickets they can’t shift on)… and gives the club the chance to pressure them into using them. How that’d go down with Goldman Sachs hospitality is a different story. I’m waiting for the day when all of this can be controlled from a smartphone app. It would be nice if aside from being able to pass on your ticket to a friend, you could donate it back to the club so people could get cheap tickets on the gate, or perhaps they could go to school kids or something. This is the first step in the right direction… and it’s a positive ‘consumer first’ story.

Goal have reports running this morning that we’re after both Jovetic and Lewandowski. Now, I’d heard that we’re chasing the Dortmund forward and that we are talking to his agent. Us… and about ten other clubs. From what I’ve been told, it’s highly doubtful we’d spend the best part of £50m on two strikers. It wouldn’t make sense when you consider the holes we have in the rest of our starting 11. That said, a marquee striker and a Remy wouldn’t be too much of a stretch. I think one of the reasons Lewandowski is attracting so much interest, bar his age, clinical finishing and size… is that his contract doesn’t have much long term in it. I don’t think he’ll be going for the £40m being touted, which puts him in the reach of anyone who is willing to make a suitable bid… and match his £10m a year wage demands.

If we’re going to go big this summer and smash the wage structure… well, he’d be the striker to go for. He’d be the statement of the year. I guess it depends on many things. How attractive are Bayern to him? How much does he like being the main man? Does he want to come to London? Would he accept being part of a project? So many questions… but we’ll have to wait and see. We’ve proved over the years, if desire is there to bring someone in… we can do it. If we landed him, he’d be the biggest statements of intent since Bergkamp.

… I’m sure even the Goldman boys would turn up if he was snared.

Our keeper has been in the news again for reasons which seem to have split the fan base. Basically, he can’t keep his mouth shut. One good save and Mr Arrogant is back.

“If we win our next two games it will be enough because either Chelsea or Spurs will drop points because they play each other,”

“If you look at Chelsea’s fixtures, they have Tottenham and Everton left and they won’t be easy games. And Tottenham do not have enough quality, so there you go.”

Now, firstly, it’s quite clear Spurs do have the quality this season. The only thing that’s let them down is their size of squad really. For me, the comment is totally unnecessary and it’ll likely act as a motivating factor for the game. You can imagine AVB will have that quote pinned to the dressing room wall on Wednesday night. It’s just an unnecessary thing to have come out and said… it’s the type of quote you read and thing, ‘fu*k me, if Spurs finish ahead of us, they’ll have that on t-shirts next year’.

Anyway, it is what it is…  but this ‘oh, he just loves Arsenal so much’ nonsense people peddle on his behalf really grates. Wasn’t he talking about Barcelona the last time he saved a penalty?

Right, finally, a bit of fun from one of the guys on Twitter who is a black cab driver. Can you decipher this?

‘Mate, I took 2 agents & player to Colney last Thursday from Heathrow, one agents surname Neilsen, Black German player about 25, any idea?’

Finally, on this day 2006, we played our last game at Highbury (Courtesy of @Donaldo1998). It’s been a tough slog since them… but whatever your views of the new stadium are, it was a move that needed to happen. I do wonder whether we’ll ever have the same feeling for the new place? How can the club make the match day experience more special? Or is it just providing a team that competes? It’s a tough ask. I still think they could do more with the space outside the ground. I know there are restrictions on merchandising. Couldn’t the club make an exception? Even for food stalls… if you give more reason to come to the stadium plot, surely a bi-product of that will be people there earlier and in the ground earlier?

Ok, so that’s me brain dump for this morning. Have a good one.

What will chelski do with all those strikers.

    They just signed Schürle.

I would be also very happy if we could swoop for Lukaku.

  2. Ramsey's backpass

    Lewandowski
    jovetic
    gustavo
    adler
    isco

    surely with those 5

we should at least win a trophy within two years even if it is the nutter arsene that is in charge

I’m really glad Wenger said what he said about Theo. For a pro footballer his attitude stinks. He played hardball over a rip-off contract, then claimed it was to do with his position not money. Then he switches off and is pure gash for 3 whole months and Wenger comes out with ‘Theo isn’t a CF’ haha. The Ox is a far better player, through the middle or on the wing, Theo is very lucky Ox really didn’t take his chances well this season. He’s been good recently but it’s easy to forget The Ox has been awful for most of the season too. Still, the attitude of someone who sets a pre-season target of 20 goals, scores 18 in a few months then switches off for the rest of the season instead of thinking ‘shit…I could double my target!’ has to be brought in to question.

Man I can’t wait til the year where we aren’t still wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to sell Theo fucking Walcott.

  4. Pedro

Gambon, Ivan reckoned we were 5 years away from being able to match the offering United have commercially.

  5. samsenal

Big game tonight – could have an indirect impact on our league position at the end of the season:

A Wigan win means Stoke will need to put in a committed performance against Spurs at the weekend. A Wigan loss will mean Stoke are all but safe, dramatically increasing the chances of a Spurs win there.

Lewandowski is not coming to Arsenal. It’s stupid to even dream about it.

  6. Pollux

We are far from certain of securing a champions league spot and you guys are already littering the comment box with classy summer signing? Please wake up guys, if we finished 5th. We will end up with just internal solution. Joel Campbell and Giroud for next season CF. 3rd or 4th and nothing changes, 5th and we will be the next Liverpool. Only way we can move up is do the unthinkable by removing the dated manager who is still living in the 90s with his meagre deluded transfer policy.

  7. gambon

    Pedro

The thing is UTD will probably expand their capacity massively in 5 years.

We are making good moves though. The extra revenue coming in from TV, Commercial and Property is all completely irrelevant if its left to stack up in the bank though, as it has been for the last 5 seasons.

Ive said it a number of times, but we could easily spend £100m this summer without any worry financially.

  8. Raz

Chelsea surely have some players available this summer?

Lukaku’s future is uncertain. If he goes back to Chelsea e’ll go from starting every game to not knowing which way is up. And if they bring in someone like Falcao or Cavani then what?

Would love us to sign Moses and make him a guaranteed starter so to speak but that’ll never happen.

Marco Marin has done nothing this year, bet he can’t wait to leave.

    Lamps is available too.

On another note, I fail to see why we wont attract players even without champions league? Of course there are players who wont go to clubs without it, sure, but there are a hell of a lot of amazing players who would join any premier league club just to play in the league against teams like us, Man U, City, Chelsea etc, Liverpool… history is still a massive pull for players. Even if we were in Europa league, everybody knows full well our main aim for next season would be to regain a champs league place. Pay a player enough and he’ll play for you. Offer him something he hasn’t got and he’ll play for you. Look at Michu – followed his manager to Swansea. I bet there were A LOT of top clubs interested in him. Everybody would have been aware of his return last season. Precisely the sort of player who could have had a better agent and engineered a move to a top 10 prem club with ease. Instead went for £2m to Swansea. You don’t need to join a champs league team to still be on the best league stage (Suarez, Tevez west ham, etc) and excelling in the prem is guaranteed to get interest from champions league clubs.

All the best players from the EPL in the last 2 years apart from Samba now play for Champs league clubs.

So, I maintain what I always have, and that is, if we want a player enough, we will sign them. It’s a question of desire and what lengths we are prepared to go to. Simple truth is we will back down in the face of competition which is just pathetic.

  9. gambon

“Lewandowski is not coming to Arsenal. It’s stupid to even dream about it.”

Correct, but until we make signings like this we are winning NOTHING!

  10. Raz

    @Pedro

Gazidis reckons we’ll be on their level in 5 years. What about, IFFF, we randomly win the league or champs league next season? Would we shave off that time by a couple of years? Just curiosity really…

  11. lord snotty

Sczczney needs to put his brain in gear before opening his big mouth. What price Chel$ki putting out a weak team against Sp*rs – and losing? After all this is a game the Chavs no longer “need” to win really. And they have that Europa final to think about.

  12. gambon

    Lord Snotty

If you think Chelsea will let Spurs win tomorrow you are mental.

Its not like some forgone conclusion that they will win their last 2 games, which are Villa away and Everton at home, both tough.

  13. samsenal

Gambon….unless our rivals don’t make them either!

Hopefully, Cavani, Falcao and Lewandowski will go to any of Barca, Real, Bayern or any italian side.

I wouldn’t object to them going to play their football in Belgium.

  14. gambon

    Samsenal

Our “rivals”…..what you mean Everton & Spurs?

In case you didnt notice we are 20 points off the top of the PL.

We wont make that up without bringing exceptional strikers in.

  15. Goondawg

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has hit back at his own player Pepe after the defender said his manager ought to have more respect for club captain Iker Casillas.

“It is very easy to analyse the Pepe thing. His problem has a name, and it is Raphael Varane,” Mourinho said.

    Pepe anyone?

  16. Ramsey's backpass

Pepe…i’ll rather take squillaci and clint hill…fcuk that steve bould wo do a better job than pepe

  17. vicky

Got to say this that Mou got it bang on with his choice of players.

Varane over Pepe has certainly worked. Pepe is a reckless defender whereas Varane is a very organised and efficient defender.

Lopez contrary to expectations has done better than even the great Casillas.

The only problem is that Mou does not handle personality issues properly.

He has spoilt the atmosphere of the RM dressing room.

  18. Bankz

    Al

Ñewcastle have a massively good squad but its either they are having problems bedding players or Alan pardew is just shit.
If we lost out of Top 4 then we have ourselves to blame as we should have smashed Man united and Everton. Ffs those were home games for a desperate side chasing Champions league. Cant believe some fans think a draw was the best we deserved.
Spuds or the Chavs would have gone all out for the 6pts available in both games.

  19. Bankz

Whatever wenger has got most Arsenal fans sipping is beyond me…..HOW ON EARTH WILL ARSENAL DECIDE TO BUY LEWANDOWSKI???
I have said a million times before…the best we are going to buy is Jovetic and that will take prayers too as Arsene will try pricing himself out by offering £5million less than his valuation

  20. Bankz

    Gambon

I will say until we change managers we are winning nothing(maybe the Emirates cup or fluke a capital 1 cup).
The EPL or UCL under Wenger will never happen again even if he had the Man city squad at his disposal….He is just not a trophy winning manager anymore….a mannager who would get that extra 10% out of the players at his disposal. Same thing. Happening at Barca right now. Aside their shambolic defence…that extra 5-10% you got from the players under Pep Guardiola just isnt there no more.

  21. gambon

    Pedro

Who knows, but some of the shit theyve been pulling recently (DHL training kit, Aon training ground deals) is impressive.

The thing they have on us is success, quite simply we wont get near them if we keep finishing 4th or maybe worse.

£100m spent on 5 top players this summer would do wonders for us commercially.

  22. Pedro

Gambon, I’d imagine that’s something that’s being discussed with the next kit manufacturer… shifting shirts with dross players won’t work… especially if the new kit maker is a challenger brand.

  23. gambon

We had money when we couldnt be bothered to compete for Mata, Hazard, Yaya, Cahill etc

We couldnt even be bothered to compete for the players we already had like Nasri & RVP.

So I see no reason why this will change until the manager’s gone.

  24. vicky

I read an article about Liverpool which says that in Liverpool If the manager identifies a transfer target, the board has to approve of the player.

A similar system exists in BM as well.

Only here at Arsenal we have a system which gives unbridled power to the manager.

  25. gambon

Lets look at how much it would actually cost to go and buy a bunch of top class players:

    Say we sign:

    GK – Begovic (£12m and £4m wages)
    DM – Gustavo (£12m and £4m wages)
CM- Diame as Diaby replacement (£3.5m and £4m)
    ST – Jovetic (£20m and £5m wages)
ST- Lewandowski (£25m and £10m wages)

I havent put Vermaelen or Sagna in there, or a new RB and CB, as I assume the costs would roughly balance out if we buy in these positions.

So thats about £70m spent, and £27m wages.

In terms of the £70m thats easy, we already have that to spend. However when you spend £70m on players you dont pay the other clubs £70m, you pay in installments, so we would maybe need £35m immediately.

With these players coming in we could also sell

Gervinho (£10m and £3m off the wage bill)
Chamakh (Give away and £3m off the wage bill)
Arshavin (£4m off the wage bill)
Frimpong (£1m off the wage bill)
Coquelin (£3m and £1m off the wage bill)
Santos (£2m and £2.5m off the wage bill)
Djourou (£2m and £2.5m off the wage bill)
Squillaci (£3m off the wage bill)
Fabianski (£2m off the wage bill)
Mannone (£1m off the wage bill)

Throw Bendtner, Park and numerous kids into the mix.

So with a bit of hard work in terms of shifting players we can easily cover the wages, and when you consider we can raise £20m or so by selling, thats a very impressive summer for £50m

So our first team would look like:

    ————————Begovic

    Sagna——Mertesacker——-Koscielny——–Gibbs

    ————-Gustavo————-Arteta

    -Walcott————-Cazorla—————–Jovetic

    ———————–Lewandowski

    Back up team

    —————————Szczesny

    Jenks———Miguel————-Vermaelen————-Monreal

    —————-Diame———————Ramsey

    -Chamberlain———–Wilshere——————Podolski

    ——————————Giroud

We would have a much better first team that has far more talent upfront, a proper DM, and a top class Keeper.

We would have a much better squad with players like Podolski & Walcott fighting for one spot, players like Diame & Wilshere having to fight for first team positions.

All that with good, but not ridiculous investment, that would leave us with money to spare if anyone else became available.

  26. Romford Pele

    Vicky

That only works if you have footballing people on your board, and in our case, that’s a no-no.

  27. Nasri's Mouth

    @Vicky

The problem with the board approving the player at Arsenal, is we don’t have any football experts on the board, so other than approving the actual amount to be spend, which ultimately happens at all clubs, there’s not much else they could do at present.

I’m not surprised Liverpool have such a system in place though after Comolli screwed them over

  28. Raz

Vicky that’s the same basically everywhere except Arsenal – I THINK. I say I THINK because nobody really knows if it’s the board refusing Wenger those extra 3mil for players like Mata or whether it’s Wenger himself.

But at City, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton and basically every club, the manager has to wait for his board/owner to release the funds.

This is why it is not healthy to have such an ageing, out-of-touch board. You think Peter Hill-Wood and Gazidis (fuck even mentioning Kroenke) know enough about modern footballers to know who we should be targeting? Do they fuck. At Chelsea Abramovich is light years ahead. At City they let Mankini do the work before deciding whether that £25m is worth it. At Spurs evy works very closely with the manager. Same at Everton, Newcastle, Sunderland, Swansea, Liverpool, all clubs really, except ours. I don’t believe when Wenger brings his ‘lists’ to his ‘superiors’ that they have the faintest idea who half the players are. ‘Wenger just do what you think is right – which is what we think is right – which is just bring anyone in as long as it doesn’t cost too much’.

  29. Arsenal 1886-2006

I really want to see a couple of midfielders who try to impose the game on the opposition, players who drive into the opponents half and do not pass backwards and sideways allowing the defenders to just stand their ground.

I would love to see Cesc back alongside someone like Fellaini, Cesc with probing forward passes and willing to shoot from outside the area, and Fellaini with his drive and willingness to get involved in some rough stuff is something we are missing.
And with somebody like Fellaini we will be less susceptible to set plays while strengthening our threat at the other end of the pitch.
Playing the ball forward quicker from the midfield will also bring Theo’s pace into the game more as we will be able play balls through before the defence drops too deep neutralising Theo’s prime asset.
Couple this with a proven goalscorer and we become a viable threat again.

  30. gambon

    Romford

I was actually supposed to put Gonalons/Gustavo/Strootman/Capoue rather than one DM, as all will be in a similar bracket.

  31. Nasri's Mouth

AVB got asked about Szczesny’s comment. He replied

“It would be a little more tolerable coming from a genuine Arsenal fan, not a player only passing through to another club”

While lifting up his handbag and following up with “oooooh, get you”

  32. Bankz

    Romford P

Gustavo is a Class act. Very few DMF like Martinez/Bosquets would have him on the bench

  33. TitsMcgee

Yea that sounds more like Gustavo than Boateng.

Why would Boateng leave?….It’s a demotion move. Leave a club that wins it’s league, pays him probably at least as much as we can pay him(probably way more) and has ambition and is currently in the UCL final?

Gustavo has been uprooted by Martinez so he seems much more likely.

I agree with Gambon. Give me Jovetic, and Benteke and we will be in a much better position next year attacking-wise.

Add Gustavo to that(who I prefer over Gonalons) and that’s 1/2 of the probem sorted.

Sign Adler and a CB and we will be in a better position.

I can’t emphasize enough how ridiculous it will be if we don’t go balls to the wall and try to get Benteke(at the very least Remy) and Jovetic this offseason.

We ALL KNOW Lewandwoski,Falcao and Cavani are no go’s for us. Maybe under a different manager but not Wenger. Messi could be available for 25 million and he’d scoff at that price. So there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER why we shouldn’t be going after the “2nd tier” guys in Benteke,Jovetic,Remy etc.

If it were another manager I’d actually say throw the cash at Lukaku as well. He might jump at the chance at being 1st choice at AFC rather than 3rd fiddle at Chelsea after they sign Falcao/Cavani etc.

Higuain would be a great signing too as he is clinical and still very young.

  34. Leedsgunner

The French Heske opens his gob…. silence I say silence! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ja!

  35. Romford Pele

Gustavo is very good – but I see no difference between him and someone like Capoue. The only difference is that one has CL experience.

  36. Al

Why is everyone clamouring for Lewandowski at the moment like signing him will instantly restore us to be challengers. Is it because he scored a hatrick against Madrid and is the flavour of the month within sports journalist constantly writing and link him with clubs

I mean because last year we had RVP and striker considerably better than Lewandowski and we was nowhere near challengers.

All i am saying is i KNow he is a great striker and light years ahead of anything we got but he is not this “saviour” bergkamp esque signing that the media and some fans are trying to portray.

THeres options just as good and better out there some are more expensive and some are cheaper but all i am saying is theres more than Lewandowski out there so don’t be dejected about not getting him .

  37. gambon

    Tits McGee

Lewandowski isnt a no go, not if we want him.

Can we afford the fee? Yes

Can we afford the wages? Yes

So we need to get him and his agent onside, and make a deal happen.

Now I know what youre gonna say, and its all wrong, as long as we have CL football we can get any player, we just have to be ambitious and steal a march on our rivals.

  38. Nasri's Mouth

    @Bankz

Apparently so. The silly sod doesn’t realise that Szczesny has been at Arsenal for longer than he’s been coaching…

    —————————
That is incredibly naive of you to believe that,
The fact is due to the length of time and success he has had the manager has more freedom with the club just like Feguson enjoys at the club. Moyes at everton is exactly the same he gets who he wants but his budget is extremely limited.

Chelsea and Man C have a system where there sugar dadies buy who they want and it doesn’t matter what the manager says because the manager doesn’t have the power to do anything as he is easily replaced. The culture is that a manager has a expiry date in those clubs hence why the infrustrure above the manager which is more focussed in the long term will make more decision then the manager.

  40. gambon

    Al

if you think all he has done is score 4 goals (not a hattrick) against Madrid you dont watch much football.

He has 65 in his last 90 games and scores with 1 in 4 shots, unlike Mr 1 in 10 Olivier Giroud.

Would he change things himself? maybe not. But When we had RVP we didnt have Cazorla, Podolski, Defensive stability, a top Keeper, and other top players that people are saying we need alongside a Lewandowski level CF.

  41. goonerbone

    86-06
if you also have a more dynamic central defence which is not as threatened by situations which can come up if you have a more vertical midfield, like you rightfully proppose, then we really have something!
(kudos to your dental flossing, see my comment to your late one yesterday)

  42. TitsMcgee

    @Gambon….

Yea I know we can afford him(we can probably afford almost anyone compared to what most will have us think) but we are way down the pecking order for him I’d imagine and unless he has a love for Arsenal or an extreme desire to be a trailblazer and return us to glory I just don’t see it happening.

Hopefully I’m wrong but I have doubts we will even go after Benteke much less Lewandowski.

  43. Nasri's Mouth

If you were Lewandowski you might be more likely to come to us if you knew that other players were signing as well.

  45. Vsavi

I think the mystery German player could be Dennis Aogo from Hamburg.

Strong, decent on the ball and versatile used to be a Cb then a CM but wouldnt be a bad signing.

    Just a hunch?

It’s not about whether we can afford Lewandowski this year (previously we wouldn’t have even bothered talking to him) it’s purely about where we are versus his other suitors.

We can sell him the Club’s plans until we’re Sky Blue in the face but it’s a massive risk for a top top player to come to us for his last big contract whilst he’s at his peak. We might be a force next season….we might not. Recent history would suggest not.

If you go to United, City, Chelsea, Real, Barca, Bayern you know for sure that you will be in a title race next season. No ifs buts or maybes.

That’s why we won’t get a player like Lewandowski.

But as others have said, that’s okay. There are good palyers out there waiting to turn into World Stars. We have found them in the past and we need to do it again.

  47. gambon

    Nasris Mouth

    Exactly.

Tell him we will pay him £200k pw, he is a guaranteed starter, gets to live in London, and we are signing Jovetic, Gustavo and plan to bring one or two more top players in and challenge for the PL and CL and he would be very interested.

  48. gambon

“United, City, Chelsea, Real, Barca, Bayern”

United have the PLs best CF, would Lewandowski sit on the bench?

City seem to be looking at everyone, which may not appeal to him as it might be they only even speak to Lewandowski if Cavani rejects a move.

Chelsea have had 3 managers in the last year and another coming in shortly, hard to put together a recruitment plan in these circumstances. They also need to offload a striker to sign anyone. They also didnt challenge at all this season, or last etc

Real will also be chasing Cavani, Falcao etc.

Barca have the best player in history, does Lewandowski think he can oust him? Really doubt it somehow.

Bayern are of course favourites to sign him, but dont forget Dortmund would almost certainly rather sell him abroad, they have Manzukic and Gomes, and its not definite the new manager has the same ideas as the old one.

All this also ignores that Lewandowski isnt the only striker available this summer.

Cavani, Falcao, Suarez, Higuain are all looking like moving, while Lewamdowski is a top player, the first two will have been chased for 12 months.

  49. TitsMcgee

“Tell him we will pay him £200k pw, he is a guaranteed starter, gets to live in London, and we are signing Jovetic, Gustavo and plan to bring one or two more top players in and challenge for the PL and CL and he would be very interested.”.

    Could it happen?…yes

Will it?…Wenger would botch it somehow.

Call me jaded or afraid of a letdown lol

I can almost see it now. Wenger goes out and signs Gonalons and Jovetic ALONE and calls it quits of the summer activity.

Who would really be shocked by that?

In an ideal world, the sequence of events would be along these lines…

    * a new owner
    * a new manager
    * garage sale to clear 90% of dross; squad size 30 and below …we have embarrassingly 50+ and still can’t compete
    * new MAIN striker eg Lewandowski (or equivalent)
    * secondary striker to replace Podi, if he leaves… Hopefully Beenke not Remy
    * a creative guy or CAM, whatever you call it
    * GK and CB/)

Now, is Podi’s pace bogged down by injury (he talked of a dodging a surgery before the US tour) or has he become so slow??

If we manage to clear even 80% of dross, we are talking shifting 15 or so and that’s not easy but can be done if the determination is there. Some contracts expire anyway so realistically getting rid of 10…

The wage and fees (if any) should surely fund half dozen very good guys!!!

Come on, Arsene(al), do something decent once a while…

  53. KJafc

    Gambon,
Sorry but as a first time poster I have to take issue with your post regarding your belief that Arsenal could compete with Man City and Chelsea on wages/transfers if AW left. You cited Yaya Toure, who is currently on £250k per week plus transfer fee and RVP.

Do you really believe we could win a bidding war with Man City and Chelsea? What difference would the manager make? If you really believe what you have just written, there is a large building and a special white jacket waiting for you…!

The fact is, you cannot win a bidding war with Chelsea and Man City – they are spending money they do not have. They can offer whatever wages they have to secure the player and nobody can do anything about it (unless FFP has real teeth).

These clubs are ruining football and encouraging player disloyalty by over inflating wages because they can. They watch us develop a player and then come along with a big fat cheque. Despite these tough times football is still totally immoral. Players can demand increasing wages, often around £1 million per month while ordinary people are struggling.

Good luck to RVP but I wish he would have the decency to admit that having his salary quadrupled to around £48 million for 4 years work was a big reason for him joining the megabrand. We fans deserve a bit more respect.

Whatever view you have on Arsenal at the moment, do not fall into the trap of believing we can compete in a bidding war with financially doped clubs that are buying success,We can’t.

That is one thing you and the media droves cannot blame AW or the club for.

  54. gambon

    KJafc

Man Utd beat City to RVP

Chelsea beat City & UTD to Hazard

Arsenal beat Cheslea and UTD to Oxlade

We can afford £200k per week, its £10m per year, our wage bill is £150m

Man Utd have Rooney and RVP earning £25m from their £160m wage bill.

Dont confuse “wont compete” with “cant compete”.

  55. gambon

  56. Nasri's Mouth

I shaved down there once for an ex, spent the next month scratching like a madman.

Agree with the defence needing a bit more mobility, with a quicker and better defence the pressure on the midfielders is relaxed a bit and they can go about doing their job in the middle and up top rather than worrying about what is behind them.

  58. gambon

If Chelsea have signed Schurrle then maybe they arent going for a top CF, which gives us a better chance of signing one of Lewandowski, Falcao, Cavani etc.

It would be tricky for them to sign Schurrle AND a CF while they have Torres, Ba, Lukaku and their triumvirate of top class AMs, not forgetting Moses.

  59. Pedro

Arsenal know they have to pay £10m to these players this year… and if they get a sniff, they might do it.

I would probably buy a CB to play alongside Mert, with Vermaelen going and Kos becoming a backup, just couldnt be bothered to write that out.

Mert and Kos works cos you have a big guy and a recovery/pacey guy, which is good balance, but Kos is just full of mistakes and is no leader, so id like to see a better version brought in.

  61. KJafc

    Gambon,

I wish it was a simple as you suggest. It is not.

Man Utd are different from the financially doped clubs. Man City and Chelsea, in that they generate sufficient income to pay the wages they offer (despite the Glazers hocking the club in debt). Their new sponsorship deals are enormous because of the pulling power they have. Man Utd have always bought success but with their own money. They are a special case. They are Megabrand United.

Our new sponsorship deals and the income generated from the Emirates will help us no end and the future is looking very good. Yes, we have finally joined the big four income generators, Man Utd, Barca, Real and Bayern and the future will be a helluva lot better BUT we cannot compete where money is the motivating factor for a player. Arsenal cannot outbid Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City. Not yet. Success would help, I agree but money talks I am afraid.

Arsenal is run like we run our own family finances. We only spend what we earn. Like it or not, that is a fact and you cannot argue that we should be matching what Chelsea and Man City are doing, we cannot. I despise Chelsea and man City for ruining football and being able to come along and wave pound notes to our best players, players we have made. It is cheating, not building success. And the players are laughing all the way to the bank, almost as loudly as the Arab and Russian entourage.

Fact is, we can tell a player we will match anything else offered by another club but does that secure his services and where does it end?

I just wish that instead of firing abuse at our club and our manager the abuse was directed at the real culprits. Lets hope FFP actually happens but don’t hold your breath.

  62. Marko

I’d honestly say a Hummels Koscielny partnership would be brilliant and dare I say possibly title winning.

Thats kind of why I think we’ll be serious this summer and I know we’ve gotten our hopes up before but the fact is this summer’s gonna be a supermarket sweep with a lot of players being available and with us likely to be in for some cause others will be looking elsewhere. Teams will be looking at Falcao, Cavani, Suarez, Bale and Neymar while Lewandowski,Jovetic, Higuain, Benzema, Soldado and Damiao are available. Gotze’s on the move and by all accounts with what’s happening in Spain you could have your pick of the players at clubs like Valencia and Sevilla with their crippling debt as well as Isco at Malaga. Erikson seems off at Ajax too and Maher and Strootman would be available too. Honestly it seems like a butt load of talent is genuinely available this summer

Are you one of them new fans? It strikes me that you have very very little understanding about Arsenal.

“Arsenal is run like we run our own family finances. We only spend what we earn. Like it or not, that is a fact”

    Only spend what we earn?

Well, we will have approaching £200m in the bank at season end. We are recieving £30m in property money, all cash, not accounting profit, in the next year.

We have a new sponsorship deal that delivers a £20m annual uplift in revenue for the next 5 years, and a new TV deal that delivers £100m over the next 3 years.

We also have a new kit deal in 12 months that will deliver another £20m uplift per season.

So, our additional revenue over and above what we always earn is worth at least £310m in the next 5 years.

And you think we cant pay £20-30m for Lewandowski?

    Now regarding wages,

    Bendtner £50k per week
    Chamakh £60k per week
    Park £30k per week
    Arshavin £80k per week

Thats £220k per week we are paying out to guys that cant even get a game in the reserves.

So are you sure we cant afford it?

This doesnt even take into account the fact that Giroud, Gervinho & Podolski (one of whom would go if we signed a top CF) earn £200k per week between them.

Back to the drawing board for you.

  65. TitsMcgee

There are plenty of players to be had this summer. Plenty of players that will improve the squad.

I forgot all about Soldado and he would be a nice option if we don’t get Higuain as well.

Like i said before there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER why we can’t sign quality players this offseason. NONE.

  66. KJafc

    Hi Kiyoshi,

I agree regarding the dross and the wages we pay to average players. The socialist attitude AW takes by trying to create parity is a mistake.

However, I was merely pointing out to Gambon that Arsenal cannot outspend Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd for a player all four want. Gambon suggested that if Wenger left we would compete for players like Yaya Toure, I just pointed out that he was wrong.

  67. zeus

Just look at you fools. Its the hope that will kill ya.

Do I need to copy and paste the events of the past 6 transfer windows.

How may times have the club “had to change transfer policy THIS summer/winter?”

    You lot just never learn.

  68. KJafc

    Gambon,

Why have you become abusive just because I pointed out we cannot compete with Man City and Chelsea? I thought the whole world of football knew that and Arsenals policy of spending within its means. Sorry that has come as a bombshell but I thought everybody knew that.

Why have you asked me if I am a ‘new fan’? I have no idea what that means or why that is relevant. As I have been supporting Arsenal since the 1960’s I guess I am an old fan, unless you are 100 years of age. In fact, chances are that I have followed the club longer than you, judging by your anger.

I really have no idea why you are being rude to me, I am a fellow Arsenal fan, and I have posted just two messages on LeGrove after it was recommended to me. Not sure why I should bother if my own fans are going to turn on me for pointing out that Arsenal cannot outspend man City and Chelsea.

Welcome to leGrove was hardly a warm one. What is that all about?

  69. Mayank

    zeus

The point is Wenger used to spend. We had the highest wagebill in the PL in 2004. Then after the stadium he stopped spending.

People like to spin it as if it was because of his own ego but you’d be stupid to not think that he was told by the board that there would be cuts.

Now for the past few years the money’s started to come back, people only assume that it’s only a matter of time till he starts spending it again.

They might be wrong and maybe the guy who comes in after him will spend it. But if Wenger is planning to retire soon he might not be so benevolent towards the next manager and want in on the cash himself.

After all the criticism he’s taken only someone who’s a saint wouldn’t want to prove the critics wrong. Whether that means prove that he can win without spending or that he still has it in him to win, period, is up for debate.

  70. gambon

    KJafc

You keep saying we cant compete with City & Chelsea.

Well guess what…….Chelsea cant compete with City, and their wage bill has been FALLING in recent seasons, yet they beat them to Hazard (£200k pw)

Man Utd cant compete with City or Chelsea, yet they still have the 2 best paid players in the PL on £250k per week each.

Why is it OK for UTD to pay Rooney £250k per week on a £150m wage bill, but impossible for us to do the same?

Why is it OK for us to pay Arshavin, Chamakh & Diaby £200k per week but not Cavani or Lewandowski that much even though they would both play substantially more football than the aforementioned cunts?

The fact is we have a large enough wage capacity to have 2 world class players at Lewandowskis/Cavanis level on our wage bill.

The other fact is that we choose to have a pathetic wage bill, we dont have to.

Bayerns wage bill is smaller than ours, yet they dont struggle to sign or keep top players.

    Kjafc,

What you have to understand is that many of us on here believe (and with good reason) that there an awful lot of real fans who have been brainwashed into thinking that finishing fourth is the best that we can possibly do. Wenger has been credited with bringing us unrivalled success in the first half of his reign and yet, by the same token (and this is where the brainwashing bit come in) he remains blameless for failing to keep up with the modern world of football in the second half of his tenure.

As if that wasn’t enough, we have fans that come on here and try to justify the last eight years of failure by pointing at cash-rich clubs like Chelsea and Man City; as if somehow it is their fault and Wenger must be acquitted at all costs. Many of us don’t buy into that and Gambon (love him or hate him) provides plenty of examples and evidence from situations with other clubs that it doesn’t have to be this way and I happen to agree with him.

The one single thing that really gets right up my nose is the lies that Wenger tells; the deceit, the inability to accept responsibility and his insistence to stay on despite the fact that he cannot win anything. He won’t do what is necessary and he won’t let anyone else do it either.

The debate hinges on one question. Is Arsene the best manager that Arsenal can possibly have? I happen to think he’s not and the sooner he goes the better it will be for all. That debate is getting ever more heated and has been raging on this blog since I’ve been a member and continues to do so.

    evening Jeff,

Thansk for the post. look, I am a new poster. I had a go at Chelsea and Man City for the way they have destroyed competitive football by offering ridiculous wages. My opinion and one which is my democratic right. I am entitled to an opinion, this is my club too. Respect.

However, i receive heaps of abuse from a so called fellow fan, Gambon or whatever his/her/its name is. I have no idea why he/she/it took offence, it came out of the blue. probably eating and drinking too many E’s in between playing on the Xbox and eating a happy meal (now there’s irony for you).

And that is a fellow Gooner, trying to be funny and asking me if I am a new Arsenal fan and then claiming I do not understand Arsenal. What arrogance, who does he think he is.

By the way, at no stage did I defend Wenger, at no stage did I say he was blameless.

It is about time Arsenal fans realised that we all love the same club. We should all be together. kjafc,

it is just a difference in opinion. you both are right, technically.

considering the cash reserves that arsenal have amassed, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to sign/afford the best players in the world. gambon is absolutely right about that.

you are also correct in saying that some clubs just have more money than us, and theoretically, that if chelsea or city chose to do so, they could pay someone 400k a week and we wouldn’t be able to compete.

but that’s not the reality of the landscape right now, and it’s frustrating as a fan to know the club have the ability to make moves, yet don’t.

further, that an explicable transfer/wage model has been used as an excuse not to go after top class players, and we as fans are forced to cheer the likes of gervinho and andre santos.

looking over his post, it really wasn’t that abusive. and looking over your post, it wasn’t unreasonable to think you were maintaining that arsenal, in this current player landscape, are unable to compete w/ the top clubs for world class players. which simply is not true.

  96. ughelligooner

Gambon i think in what kjfc is saying is you have to look at what the agent fees is and all other luxuries that are attached to it. The likes of chealsea n city even utd can spend some more off the account mills compared to arsenal. Like the case of chelsea and mikel/kakuta and even hazards younger brother was signed together with him. Can arsenal go the extra miles of inviting the said players to luxury yatch private parties?? The abramovic and sheik monsier at city can. Kronke? No. We only have wenger to do the talking. Money talks man.

Good question.. One that should be put to Wenger

Wojciech Szczesny joined Arsenal in 2006. Andre Villas-Boas became a professional manager in 2009.

Having said that Chezzers is a dick as he as in effect done AVB’s team talk for the final three games.

& AVB has won a UEFA Cup,with Porto& a Domestic League Championship as well..

Szech, should win some silverware, before opening that mealy mouth of his!

Shows the poor discipline we have over our youth players, so many of them drive ridiculous cars, spend their whole time on social media acting like twats, earn too much etc etc

Schez has had a poor season and should be keeping his mouth clamped shut. All Arsenal players should steer clear of the media, you have nothing to gloat/mock about.

Shut up, crawl into fourth like good little minions of Wenger and then spend all summer declaring him coach of the last hundred years!!

There’s something wrong at the club inherently. Schez’s interview makes me cringe as an Arsenal fan…over the top arrogance to hide his insecurity at a poor season after a horrendous Euros

You are entering the lions den,in Le-Grove..

Should have done your homework beforehand..

The lions on here, will tear you too pieces.
The discussions being had, have been done to death on here, since time immemorial..

One thing, you should be wary of,never ever come equipped with the argument, that Man City& Chelsea have effectively destroyed the EPL,on Le-Grove..

You are simply dangling dicey meat for the lions to feast upon..

It’s one thing to be passionate, its another to be logical& reasoned in your arguments.

One should take a detached view& an unemotional one..

In that vein, you will see the bigger picture.

Bottom line is,Wenger has had money..

He’s just like a rabbit, running across the road, midway caught with a juggernaut bearing down on him, with blinding headlights..

    Mr Wenger,is thinking do I stick,or bust.

He’s chosen to stick,& has effectively put an end to his career..

Yep career suicide..remains of his lanky frame, scattered all over the highway..

    Take a bow Mr Wenger!!

Sadly we all know Wenger is akin to a Chocolate tea pot when it comes to man management of any sort

Benteke is good but Lukaku is a real beast.
me think benteke will be tres tres cher pour monsieur wenger unless he has a buy out clause.

It’d be good if the club announced a signing going into the last couple of games.Releasing a statement that Jovetic was on his way as soon as the window opened would be a morale boost for the fans and the club as a whole.
    ————————————–
    You mean a token gesture..

A kind of dangling the carrot,so the fans that are wavering, give the plank-Mr Wenger, another year..

    I rather they don’t..

    No more subterfuge..

We had that last year with Podolski(deal tied up around Jan 2012)& look where that got us..?!!

  109. sam

Wojcek is right, bale hotspuds is a one man team but It’s better he shut it coz we aren’t any better.

  110. kwik fit

Neville said last night that Bale has won 26 points for spuds this year. Take 26 of the current total and they would be on 38.
Now I understand you’ll say he finished off good team work and if it wasn’t him it would be someone else. That doesn’t apply in the case of Bale. He generally picks the ball up himself, drives threw himself and scores himself. So it would indeed be relegation if it wasn’t for Bale!

If we had Usmanov and Dein in power I’d love to see us have a go at signing Bale…in more ways than one it’d be fantastic

  112. Rutu

Graham Hunter says Villa will be joining either us or spuds this summer depends on the top 4 situation though.

  113. Josip Skoblar

Bayern are seriously considering making an offer for Kozzer. Will Wenger oppose the sale? I’m not sure.

  114. Johnty79

Sorry for the delay but to me the emirates feels cheap compared to highbury….the north bank had a more quality feel compared to the rest of the stadium…overall the emirates feels abit of a let down….even the Ajax stadium that was built much earlier feels more modern…same for the benfica and Porto stadiums built for euro 2004. Bayerns stadium totally out classes it. I will admit its better than white heart pain.

  115. Cesc Appeal

What do people think of De Guzman when he’s deployed as a CM/CDM? That seems to be where he’s playing tonight and I know we were interested way back when he played for PSV (I think PSV) and he was a CDM.

    What do people rekon?

    Johnty

I’ve thought for a long time they need to look at BvB’s ground, get rid of the exec sections of the North Bank and make it one huge steep stand, cheapest tickets, safe standing (when the FA pulls its head out).

That’s a lot of work and no way would the board sacrifice a good 20% of the stadium’s exec boxes to create atmosphere.

But an entire bank of red and white every home game would certainly do that.
