Wenger’s family want out of England | Bacary, Arteta and Henry back in the fold!

by & filed under News Review.

Happy Sunday one and all! It’s FA Cup day, we’ve landed a bit of a duff kick off, but what can you do? Aston Villa come to town in what should be a fairly simple contest. My pal who is a Villa fan is pretty certain we’ll beat them, they don’t really have huge amounts of quality, but in the form we’re in at the moment… I wouldn’t rule anything out. They’ve taken points off Chelsea at the Bridge and they’ve started to look half decent lately.

Last time we played them, I missed the game, but it was only a late 87th minute goal that saved our bacon.

The injury news is looking favourable. Late fitness tests for Thierry and Arteta should see them in the squad along with Bacary Sagna and Coquelin. The return of a proper right back is the best bit of news we’ve had in a while. Having someone mobile in a position we’ve really struggled with couldn’t come soon enough. It’s just a shame all those players couldn’t have been back for the United game last week.

I’m expecting a strong line up not least to get some defensive confidence back in the team. We need to start getting back to winning ways fast. This is a great mini spring-board opportunity  and hopefully it’ll be a chance to shake off our second extended hangover of the season.

Something I did wonder about is how the effect of Jack being out for the season will affect the rest of the players. I’m sure it must boost the team to see one of their star performers working their way back into contention… not least for the relief of having some quality in the midfield with the added hope that he adds to our chances of a top four. We obviously won’t be able to judge the impact, but it’s an interesting point to note regardless.

Wenger has  been on the defensive about young players and the problems he’s been having. Firstly, he spoke about how hard it is to rest a player like Jack Wilshere when he’s one of the best players in the team.

“You can convince him he does not play when he is not good enough. But if he is not injured and is one of the better players in the team, it is hard to explain to everybody that you don’t play him because he might maybe have a future stress fracture.“

Now, you can take the situation we were in one of two ways. You could frame the argument by saying he was too good to drop, or you could frame it the other way and say that the squad wasn’t good enough to drop him. The latter was the issue as far as I could see. Jack gives it his all, 100% effort all the time, but I don’t think anyone could say he wasn’t visibly tired at times last year. You might not be able to pin an exact injury that might occur in the future, but you could certainly predict that if you over played a kid, the chances are he might break at some point. In fact, we made that point many times during last season…

Sure enough… that’s what happened. Just like it did to Vermaelen after we ran him into the ground in his first season

The other issue Wenger was talking about was the one to take off Chamberlain

“People forget that to start him [Oxlade-Chamberlain] against Manchester United, a player with no experience, it takes guts to do it at the start.

“He came on at Manchester United when we lost 8-2 and nobody spoke about it. But to start him in a game of that magnitude [last Sunday] and then for him to have done well is very positive for us.”

This is another comment that you could take a number of ways. Sure, it takes guts to play an 18 year old in a game like the United one. However, what was the other option? Andrey Arshavin who we’ve given chance after chance all season? Did Wenger really have an option? Not only that, we’re not talking about playing an unknown… we put £12million down on him. He’s should be top talent for that cost and he shouldn’t have been be a major risk if we’d done our home work. Which, it turns out we had done.

Wenger once again bragged about young players wanting to play for us because they get a chance. Well, that and the bundle of money we throw their way. I’m not sure young players wanting to use Arsenal as a stepping stone is something to be shouting about. I’d prefer it if young players came to us because they admired how amazing our first team is. The idea that we buy them up and put them in regardless of how well they play seems to have got us in all sorts of bother over the years. Realistically, are they coming to us because of the chance, or because they see gaps all over our first team squad?

We need to strike a much better balance going forward. That said, Chamberlain is the type of talent you don’t mind us throwing in at the deepend. Powerful, creative and… as Wenger put it… fearless.

The decision to take him off was bizarre at the time and it still is. He played Jack in 50 odd games last year, so why he thought he needed to rest Chamberlain after 70 minutes is beyond me. Alex Fynn said in the podcast he thinks it’s linked to Jack Wilshere’s injury… I’m not sure I agree. Maybe if he’d played 20 on the bounce.

If Wenger is considering a move, word on the street is that Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho may part company at the end of the season. Jose has done a pretty good job getting his team in front of Barca in the league, but the football isn’t as expansive as the Madrid fans would like to see and Jose has done some pretty crazy things over the past couple of years… the craziest being that he keeps losing to the greatest team ever in the El Classico’s. If Madrid came knocking in the summer, would Wenger say no? Or would he thing… you know what… I’m pretty good at working with world class players… this could be my last chance for a move like that?

Who knows… but he’s put it out there. His family are looking to move back to France, this might be a nice, warm stop off along the way. One thing you can be sure of, even if Jose does want a Premier League club, it probably won’t be us should Wenger leave. I have my doubts whether United would have him as well… he can be brand damaging to a degree.

Anyway, it’s time to forget that and look forward to an afternoon of exciting football. Today not only needs to be a win, it needs to be a confidence boosting win where we play nice football and hopefully craft a few goals. It would also be nice to bag a clean sheet. I expect the crowd to be on good form and I’d imagine we’ll all be kissing Arsene’s backside after booing him last week.

P.S. Remember to listen to the podcast I put together with Alex Fynn, it seems to have had a good response so far which means I’ll have to get some more in the pipeline! More detail about Wenger’s future and what his family want to do are contained inside…

We don’t usually win games in this manner. It feels great. But the debate will be about the poor defence, vulnerability to setpieces etc etc

un fucking believable. 2 nil down and i storm off in disgust and make the family dinner… my kid looks at the stream on the 71st minute and says ‘Daddy, Arsenal have scored three times’.

Fuming, more at the first half performance than anything else. It was so demoralizing i fucked off for my tea!

Fuck on a number of counts.

  5. Joppa Road

Yep Pacman – fair play to the boys and Wenger, he clearly had words at H/T. Complete shock to see a come back of this stature given what has been going on recently.

The FA Cup once saved Ferguson Man U career – and look what he went on to. Not saying it will in Wenger’s case but a few players come back and suddenly there is a different outlook.

    Just wish they could defend!

  6. Gamboff

I mean it’s normal to be anti-Arsene given his track record, but the amount of people here openly cheering for us to lose ….. have a fucking word.

  7. G787

Take that Mcleish you Carrott headed Crankie. Hate that guy just less than his assassin defender.
Great 2nd half pefrformance, see what can be done with the desire.
Roshitty U played well, as did Ramsay, Kos & Walcott.
Mcleish U jus been Van Persied.

  8. ice

well i got that one wrong then…..the good luck of 2 pens hey!

he’s now looking for a loan forward to quell the gripes….tevez till the end of the season according to romford pele……

  9. sidney896

Will never want us to lose, but that first half was unbearable. For a few million we could have picked up a full back for the last three games and not lost them all. The Ox would have ripped Swansea and Fulham apart yet AW plays him against United.

This one victory does not replace the last few months of shite that AW has presented… AKB’s need to get vision longer than the last 45 minutes. Mugs.

  10. Gunner2301

It took 2 penalties, we wouldn’t have won in open play. The result is just masking over the problem, our team is simply not good enough anymore and that’s not me being a killjoy, I’m looking at the bigger picture.

  11. gunnerfanatic

I love a good football match even if it means that the opposition is making my day, today it was villa first half and the Gunners in the second half, Thank God we won, we needed it.

  12. The BearMan

Wenger was a lucky man, his team turned up during the second half. Best I have seen Ramsey play in a long, long time.

Frogman. There are a lot of negative comments on here. With good reason you prick. We again relied on a massive stroke of luck today. Two contentious penalties and a fluke Walcott goal. Pull your head out of your ass you AKB dick.

  15. useroz

great feeling to win of course… but we simply are shit with HEADERS

hardly could win one at the back, in middle of the park and upfront!!

if we fix this issue we may do a little bit better….

  16. Gunner2301

It’s time the board grew a pair and started taking things out of Wengers hands, he is dragging the club down and they are letting him. It doesn’t take a genious to see that we might have won today but we could lose the next game regardless who it is. This team is a toss of a coin team and Arsenal are better than that and above that shit.

i’m not disappointed we won, but am under no illusion that every win of this kind makes Wenger think he is vindicated in his choices. The Podcast if you haven’t listened should be a wake up call to all fans.

You should all be able to go over recent history with the information revealed in the podcast as a backdrop and understand Wengers motivation. I for one believe now more than previously that the sooner he is gone the better we will be.

He is like an all pervasive poison in our club and every level is affected. The fact that the board are allowing him to get away with this whilst asking fans to pay more is criminal.

another great twatter rumour: dalglish has asked newcastle for ba, and would be willing to include the alcoholic donkey to get the deal finished.

  27. Josip Skoblar

Just bAck from the Emirates!!! Awful first half, with toothless tipy-tapy football. Great second half (TH14 did the team talk at half time, this was confirmed by Kozzer to a French radio). Every one went back home happy. Great game by Rosicky. Oxo, Le Coq and Kozzer. Awful game by Fabianski and Walcott (why were they on the pitch today?). Arteta was defensively useful in the end. The rest of the team was ok, they fought hard in the second half when they were chasing the game. Overall, not a great performance but we are through.

  28. Ja_Gunner

    This is very funny LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Reds paid £20m after seeing fake Downing video

When Off the Ball heard this week that Liverpool decided to fork out £20 million for Stewart Downing after being duped by fake YouTube footage of the winger showing off his skills, it was instantly dismissed as a huge steaming pile of codswallop. ‘Nobody can be that stupid,’ we thought.

But after trawling through numerous reports we stumbled across the following quotes from Liverpool chairman Tom Werner and Off the Ball’s jaw dropped so far and so fast that we’ve had to have it wired back together by a hugely expensive orthognathic surgeon and can only drink soup through a straw for the next two months.

“There was some footage of Stewart where he was, from 30 yards away, kicking a football into five different trash cans and it was brilliant,” Werner is quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. “[Liverpool owner] John [Henry] and I said: ‘Oh my God, this player is brilliant, we’ve got to figure out a way to make a deal with him’.”

    Read that again.

Off the Ball has the telephone number of a good surgeon if you need it.

It was only later that Werner and Henry realised the footage had been digitally enhanced as part of a campaign to boost season ticket sales at Downing’s then club Aston Villa. Since moving to Anfield in the summer, Downing has scored no goals and provided zero assists in 22 Premier League games.

  29. Ja_Gunner

20 million pounds for 0 goals 0 assists in 22 games..

Geeezzzzz….Dalglish may be inspirational but his buys are awful…

I know having 2 or 3 key English players is great….but just filling a team with english players just for the sake of it is absolute rubbish…

Quality is what counts more than anything…. and in our case we are somewhat short on quality….

  30. kwik fit

Eden Hazard on Canal+: “My decision is made, I’m leaving for England at the end of the season.
    Chelsea it is then :(

  31. Ja_Gunner

Keyser are you saying Downing is better than Walcott?

Well based on those stats above I would say no….but I would concede that he is a more natural winger than Walcott….Walcott aint no winger… Walcott as all of us have said is a sprinter first..footballer second and he will never be world class imho….

However I still think we could squeeze more out of him as a striker…

Thats the only way Walcott will be of any use to us…He should be played the way Michael Owen was…

I mean look at Hernandez at Manure….he contributes a big fat zero on build up plays….but his pace and positioning and finishing makes him dangerous..

Walcott has the pace and is a decent finisher and i believe he can learn the positioning…there is a better chance of him learning that..than learning how to dribble with the ball…

So at striker Walcott would be much more useful…

  32. Evan

Edens translation, incredible come back blah blah something like see you monday? Dam i wish i listened in french class lol

    Gooner?

  33. Goon from BD

I like Barrios. A powerful but also decent with the ball forward. Good at linking up play. I thought he was the best option that would be available after thinking about Podolski’s past record. Would be delighted if he signed!!!

  34. Josip Skoblar

    Lurch
Not 100% sure of translation, but it seems that Hazard us is tellling Arsenal players: ‘See you on Monday, lads!’ What a bomb that would be if he were to come and sign for us on Monday! Let the dream come true…

  35. G STAR

I was in France on holiday a while ago, and I was introduced to Eden Hazard’s brother Thorgan by a friend of mine (My mate’s father owns a really famous restaurant- its rated by Gault Millau, hence, he met Thorgan there) According to Thorgan, Eden prefers Arsenal to the other English teams due to the presence of Arsene Wenger, who Eden is an ardent admirer of, also, Vermaelen and Gervinho are good friends with Eden. Another interesting piece of information is that Eden was on the verge of joining Arsenal in the season before lasts transfer window(he wasn’t as famous then) however, Wenger chose to let him stay at Lille. Thorgan told me that unless if Madrid come calling in the summer, with the assurance of first team football, Hazard will join Arsenal. There are still chances that Hazard might sign this transfer window, as Thorgan said that Wenger was desperate to conclude this deal quickly, however, Lille want to keep Eden till the end of the season, and then try and sell him for top dollar. The talk of other english teams being linked is rubbished, as Eden will only join Arsenal, Madrid or Barca according to Thorgan.

  36. iceman10

tbh i dont want Hazard. First he wanted to come to Arsenal then it was Real and now hes been flirting with chelsea and PSG. He just doesnt seem like he wud stay for a while and the are concerns over his attitude too we might just have another Nasri. Another thing is hes a wide player and i think if we shud spend big it shud be in the middle of the park. A DM and an attacking one and we are set…another striker wud be nice too

  37. Samir

Don’t delude yourselves guys…We all know what Wenger’s like!
He won’t buy anyone because he’s a stubborn French bastard.

AND, if he does…It’ll be some 16 year old unknown African…

  38. Josip Skoblar

In an interview with Canal+ yesterday, Hazard said that the EPL was more suited to his style of play. He also reckons that he would learn more in England than anywhere else. Good lad!

  39. Samir

We have the money…But we won’t spend any of it on players…
Renewing contracts…And Arsene’s + the boards bonuses are more important!

  40. OPG

Wouldn’t get your hopes up yet about Wilshere, Wenger very vague today even Diaby’s ‘comeback’ is not certain when can’t trust the time lines of recovery they give.

Regardless could do with a couple of signings but one first team signing would be progress this window, the rest can wait for the summer.
If Hazard had the choice though unless we get rid of some of the deadwood we can’t afford to pay those deserving good wages, but he seems a ‘fan’ of Arsenal and Wenger who clearly rates him highly.

  41. iceman10

Seriously Diaby shudnt even be in discussions…if he comes back good but we cant plan around him. That injury fucked his career hes just a bonus now. A positive is Le Coq tho. Hes got the tools to become very very good for us

If we want to pitch ourselves as one of the best clubs in Europe then buying Hazard is an absolute must!! He’s not the only answer but allowing another club to sign him isn’t acceptable.

Imagine having Hazard and The Ox on the wings with VP in the middle. We could flog Walcott off to Liverpool for £47.3 million and make funds towards the deal.

  45. Dutchman

But wenger is such a stubborn prick. Everybody can see that we need a new striker or winger and some midfielders. Because Ramsey is just nog good enough yet. And rosicky and benayoun are fucking shit. Why the fuck does he not buy soem midfielders?
Honda is going to Lazio for a few millions. Unbelievable that everyone sees that we need some creativity but wenger is happy with his squad. I’m so happy on the day he leaves us. And it doesn’t matter which players are going with him because our new manager will spend hopefully!! Just unbelievable! We can’t be fourth with this team (if wilshere is not back quickly). We need some creative players! We won’t qualify for CL without a very good signings, you french senile!

  46. Saad

    Dutchman!

I wouldn’t get too excited, first off if he were coming he would want us to be in Top 4 which looks really tough, not that CFC have improved in January but there are still two days to go and Im sure AVB is looking for someone who can assure them of a Top 4 finish! I think Walcott needs a reality check and I have defended him on here plenty. Didn’t like the celebration at all. To me it came across as cocky and out of touch with someone who needs to be knuckling down and proving himself.

I don’t want Wenger signing anyone in this window (not that he will anyhow). We should give him to the end of the season to work with what he has got.

  61. stu

not shore anyone on here leaving a comment knows anything about football. we are a bit short in quality but i do believe the negative support for the club really hinders us. our fans need to up their game. we have no right to win anything just having a fighting chance is what wrenger gives us even though we really should be mid table the amount of money we spend but yet we seem to be fighting maybe not winning but up there every year. he really does over achieve every year. no one realizes it. it is quite scandalous. its not his fault we have rubbish rules in this country that allows mega rich foreign owners to take control of football clubs. we would of won more if it was not for the chelsea and man city revolutions. our squad has always been competitive. be careful what you wish for thats what i say. look at that idiot running liverpool they spent 100m on downing carrol and henderson. where as wrenger has spent nothing and our squad boasts the finest young british talent in wilshire, ramsey, chambling, wallcott, gibbs, and more in which to build on. i remember fegie spending 30m on ferdinand and wrenger brought toure for half a million. i remember us needing a centre back and him going out and buying vermaelen and kolsheinie who are world beaters for less than 20m. the guy keeps us up there and makes money. pound for pound the best manger out there and arsenal fans should pay attention to what they have. we will be in dire trouble if we loose the man. also 5th is not bad considering we lost our three best players in the summer, wilshire, fabregas and naris. we still have a chance to Finnish fourth and win something lets get behind the team.

I saw Ramsey given an 8,and I thought WTF?! Ramsey alongside walcott and flapianski were the worst on our side. Ramsey seems to take a few extra touches on the ball with no end result. He slows our play and recently has been darn poor. Why wenger plays him ahead of benayoun or even Arshavin in that position is beyond me.
Walcott is another dilema. He is stuck and lacks the most basic of football intelligence. Wenger needs to get rid! Seriously get rid, trust Daglish to offer £30mil! I tell you OX is light years, eons ahead of him in development.

If TH12 did the HT team talk, he did good.

What is this Hazard rubbish. Keep dreaming. Instead of looking to the summer we should be look at winning the FA cup and getting 4th.
