Le Grove Podcast #1 – Alex Fynn talks David Dein, Arsene Wenger and the clubs future

by & filed under News Review.

So here it is people, the first ever Le Grove podcast! I haven’t listened to it back, all I know is the microphones worked and I started and stopped it in the right place.

It was recorded with Alex Fynn who is co-author of Arsenal: the making of a modern superclub (the other half being Kevin Whitcher of the Online Gooner). It’s a truly fantastic read if you’re looking for clarity on the last 10 years of Arsenal. Alex counts Arsene as one of his neighbours and he’s worked around football and Arsenal for years.

We had a good chat about all sorts of stuff regarding the club. We spoke about the United game, George Graham, David Dein (his future), the commercials and the future of Arsene.

Take a listen if you get the chance and drop some constructive, praise-full feedback for me in the comments.

  1. Thomas, it's up for grabs now..

Good Job Pedro.. reinforces much of what I suspected!

As Joppa said, could listen to more! We’re junkies… feed us!

As well as the Arsenal stuff.. I would also be interested in his wider views on football and other clubs.. For example The pressure on the spuds to keep up that standard on half of our income and the pressure they will feel in 1-2 seasons when they’ll experience the feeder club syndrome, if they don’t win something, huge upward pressure on wages….. and so on..

He mentioned broadcasting… His views on making money from that through live internet games would be insightful.. and his explanation of the complexities of broadcasting rights in foreign territories would also be interesting as this is a complex subject tied up in copyright and rights etc etc..

Enjoyed.. well done.. It delayed me before heading out for a few!

    Cheers

Just finished the podcast from start to finish. Top work, what an absolute gentleman!! Seemed pretty close to the mark with most stuff, and he probablyknows more than most real gunner fans

This was a really good listen, look forward to more

  3. gazzap

well done pedders, loved the podcast. Alex Fynn knows!

we used to be a superclub a few years ago but we stagnated because of Wenger’s stubbornness and inability to adapt. We are slipping back and I dont think it can easily be turned around in one season.

  4. skandibird

WELL!!! Finally, I worked it out for my-bloody-self, after requests for help (thanks -not!) I tried clicking on the Podcast via Chrome i-google and it worked straight away, so thanks ever so much for the lack of help…. anyway, I thought the interview was brilliant, loved listening to Alex, what an absolute gent and so informative, very very interesting, so much stuff I wasn’t aware of. Maybe next Podcast could involve an ex-player?

  5. incesc

looks like we are in the market and its podolski

will we get an arshavin finish or an alonso?

does buying podolski solve the crater/backhole/diaby hole in midfield?

    8m for podolski

    lol

  6. Lurch LeRouge

    really top slice pedro.

you guys make a bad situation almost bearable with quality programming like that.

    kudos.

david dein sos and i hope all those cocks we’ve argued DD’s case against over the past couple of years enjoy a slice of humble pie.

get adams, wright and dd back in some capacity and we can go forward.

  7. paul mc daid

That was great,so its like we all knew all along, more people with football brains like David Dein and less clowns like PHW.

  8. Rohan

Nice one Pedders. Quite enjoyed it. Even though I’m not really a fan of podcasts in general. Look forward to more.

Alex Fynn sounds like a guy who Geoff would get along with amazingly well. :D

    Morning,

Yesterday saw Barca losing grounds again, now they trail 7 points behind the leaders, Real

Looks set for the Blanco’s to snap the La Liga title, and for Maureen to prove again how great a manager he is. Needs only 2 seasons to take his team to it’s prime, not 7 futile seasons and counting…..

  10. Bade

Also, yesterday saw the Mancs go out of the FA

So it looks set for the Chavs to snap it, so AVB can earn himself another season, or less

It’s up to the draw, but looks like Chavs will meet either of us or Scousers in the finals. Unless of course, we meet earlier …..

  11. Bade

As for today’s one, still feeling bad about it

Villa won’t come with a second string, probably they will field a full strength team, so we should do as well

With the CC out of the way, we can afford a full strength team. Anyway you can barely can our team “Full strength” with so many key players injured.

  12. Bade

Since our last game with them, the away one in the league, Villa seem to find their form, albeit we escaped that one with a late winner

    So we should be careful

  13. Bade

    I’d put this team out

    SZCZ
    Kozzer-Per-Tommy-Miquel
    Arteta-Song
    Theo-AA23-OXO
    Robin

Let’s just quit the useless 433

a 4231 is a much balanced set up, me thinks

  14. Bade

The 4231 can be seen as a modern interpretation to the 424 or the diamond 442,

With Arteta and Song as holding midfielders, we don’t need a 3rd midfielder in the mix and better off to have a play maker in the hole where he can feed the striker and the two wingers

AA23, although his laziness, can be perfect for that

  15. ashvin

Enjoyed the podcast.I didn’t think i would. It would have been better without the voices in the background though.good question in the end.Who’s gonna tell him?

  16. James Taunt

Congrats on the first podcast Pedro. I will listen to it completely when I get some free time today or tomorrow.

  17. Honest Bill

The podcast was very very good. Very informative, and way different from the usual prattling one expects from these things.

My only criticism would be that the microphone was picking up lot of background noise, but i’m sure you noticed that yourself.

Interesting what he had to say.

I must say that Wenger being afraid to take a financial risk is all well and good, but surely he must see that the quality is not there in the side. And in fact he’s taking a much bigger financial risk by not spending now.

I’m sure there are plenty of players who would add significantly to the team who wouldn’t take massive amounts in transfer fees to acquire.. But to be fair, we all (including Wenger) thought the same thing about AA23. And while his arrival clearly did rejuvenate the team and helped us get 4th spot, he also hasn’t done a great deal since

It’s as easy to look at AA23′s signing as CL money gained as it as to see it as 20 million quid spunked on a player who by most accounts is costing us points now.

Either way, that risk, i feel, must be taken. We must buy quality now or we will lose on the CL money. We can’t afford to rely on the players returning from injury, knowing full well that the squad will most likely be hit by injuries again.

Now is the time to take the risk, especially whn there are so many players out there who would come for reasonable fees and would add significantly to the team.

I mean come on, can we really afford to have Ramsey occupying a vital place in the team (as if that doesn’t apply to all positions) for the rest of the season? I don’t think so. Someone needs to come in who can make an impact now.

  18. RedandDread

Really enjoyed the podcast. The sound quality needed to be a little better IMO-it was difficult to hear Alex at times.
