Le Grove Podcast #1 – Alex Fynn talks David Dein, Arsene Wenger and the clubs future

by & filed under News Review.

So here it is people, the first ever Le Grove podcast! I haven’t listened to it back, all I know is the microphones worked and I started and stopped it in the right place.

It was recorded with Alex Fynn who is co-author of Arsenal: the making of a modern superclub (the other half being Kevin Whitcher of the Online Gooner). It’s a truly fantastic read if you’re looking for clarity on the last 10 years of Arsenal. Alex counts Arsene as one of his neighbours and he’s worked around football and Arsenal for years.

We had a good chat about all sorts of stuff regarding the club. We spoke about the United game, George Graham, David Dein (his future), the commercials and the future of Arsene.

Take a listen if you get the chance and drop some constructive, praise-full feedback for me in the comments.

riki- where is this ”breaking news” on Hazard then? Cant’ see it anywhere bar your claim? Do you have inside info by any chance??? #cynical&sarcasm

  2. Grassy Knoll

Can’t wait to hear it – but boy, more than an hour to download it!

If you’re going to do them regularly (and I hope you do!) maybe we shiuld pass the hat around and Le Grove some bigger pipes!

  3. Grassy Knoll

    Scott – it’s downloading / streaming – gonna take a while!
I’ve downloaded 24% and still have 50 mins to go!

Alex Flynn is a football guru, i am always interested in what he has to say (Arsene Wenger)

Shame he isn’t interested in what the fans have to say! (thats not a dig at Alex, ain’t heard him yet I can’t listen its loading)

    grrrrr

  5. Evan

I used Kwik fit’s link started listening and then paused, let it load like you would a youtube vid on a slow day, its now playing fine.

    Good luck

  6. kwik fit

According to the Arsenal Brigade, Arsenal have agreed a fee for Lucas Barrios and he’s on his way to the Emirates today

    Who?

  7. Evan

    I hope that’s a lie Kwik Fit,

Lucas Ramón Barrios Cáceres (age 27) Argentina CF

    2009 – Borussia Dortmund (75 apps) (35 goals)
    2010 – Paraguay national (21 apps) (6 goals)

P.S. Don’t pause the podcast and leave the room for a drink top up as i got some kinda 410 error, what ever that means?

It meant i had to restart the pod cast and now it won’t load. I ain’t that techie so it may be PC who knows.

Pedro: What i heard was decent, good job

    pedro-

great interview. as a person who spends half his days interviewing people, i must say you gave a splendid effort. interviews are really difficult and require an immense amount of preparation; well done. i really look forward to further podcasts and hearing your growth as an interviewer.

only complaint: introduce yourself to the listeners next time.

  10. frenchie

    kwik-

    indeed, fella.

i think wenger is lost in the transfer market. as mr flynn suggested, too many “yes” men and not enough “go do” men surround ogl.

  11. kwik fit

That insight into Wenger provided by Alex is actually quite sad. Wenger basically was in the right place at the right time and made the most of it. When he has to make thing’s happen himself he come’s up short.

  12. Grassy Knoll

ok – I’ve been trying for an hour and a half – with no success – can someone tell me exactly what they did to stream the podcast please!

  13. Grassy Knoll

IG – thx – the ‘webcast link in the blog text, right?

How long did it take for anything to start happening?

  14. IvoryGoonz

don’t worry Mr Flynn, there’s plenty Arsenal fans who don’t take you for a fraud, more like a nice external view more objective and informed than most and always very respectful.
    can’t go wrong.

  15. IvoryGoonz

and I can tell you Wenger feels he’s been forced to buy those experienced players, only picked the ones he could really sell quick, and still doesn’t see all the flaws in all his favorite players.

  16. Joppa Road

    Just listening now…..

Slightly unfair on GG, saying he couldn’t move with the times. Did Arsenal ever truely back him in the transfer market back then?

    Just asking.

  17. Joppa Road

Kwik, just think it slightly unfair to say he couldn’t move with the times. Although it’s kind of like Wenger now.

  18. Joppa Road

Ian Wright “Where do I sign?”…and people knock him. My all time fav Arsenal player. Love him.

Rioch’s days were numbered from the start!

“Jon McGinlay would have scored that”….LMAO!

  19. IvoryGoonz

one reading for Wenger: Conversations with God.
Hopefully, after reading the first page he’ll remember, and that there’s nothing bad about money, only what you make of it.

  20. IvoryGoonz

Joppa: it’s exactly like Wenger, he doesn’t mean more or less, Flynn he’s not an offensive type of person, more politicaly correct than he should sometimes… (later . . . 6 years too late… it’s the same Alex :) )

  21. IvoryGoonz

I just love that song, most underrated AC/DC song, I truly miss Bon Scott in that band, his voice on that tune is something the next singers have had difficulties to match (like Gillian for Deep Purple), RIP Bon Scott.

And your name just made it happen, sorry.
    S.Quiller -> Squealer

  22. Joppa Road

Dein’s mantra “When I get up in the morning and looking in the mirror I see get a winning team”.

    Team above stadium.

  23. IvoryGoonz

Scott: same here with the song, hadn’t ‘reminisced’ it since couple years, heard it first back in south of France like 20 years ago, and lost it on a stolen ipod couple years ago :)

  24. scott quiller

I had forgotten all about that name until u mentioned it.last time i was called it was about ten twelve years ago.you made me laugh.anyway going out now, hope for a good result from the gooners tommorw c u goonz.

  25. Joppa Road

    “Everything should be performance related”

    Damn bloody right it should.

    “Exceptional players earn exceptional wages”.

    Again bang on.

  26. MOH4

Great job pedders. Love the pdcast. Well done! one last thing, dont u think it should be available on itunes? im just saying cause as much as i cant stand apple or itunes. Thats where you’ll get the most exposure. Also you wont have the downloading problems your having now. Anyways cheers on the pod pedders

  27. SUGA3

    Joppa,

it’s stating the bleeding obvious, it’s the disparity in wages that gives the low earners something to aspire to, been saying for years that Wenger’s leftie utopia is doomed to failure…

  28. Joppa Road

“To have a good business, you have got to have a good team”.

But Wenger has absolute power – this is madness and cannot end well.

  29. Bade

An hour and 6 minutes of pure joy and so much information, great really

This is the Le Grove podcast, sheer quality and substance

  30. Joppa Road

“Speculate to accumulate”. But no one telling Wenger.

Alonso, what dropped bollock that was. Said at the time he was the one Liverpool would miss most.

  31. Bade

Some great truths about the Arsenal

Sad to listen to that, but we were a mega club and didn’t act like one

How painful is that, how true though

  32. Bade

Hope that puts to bed all the AKBesh excuse making about the board restraining Arsene’s transfers ability, he’s the one to decide on it, he’s to blame and the only accountable for the performances of the team

  33. Joppa Road

The irony of it all is that when the shit does hit the fan Arsenal are going to have to spend their way out of it!

  34. Matthew Wade

Excellent interview and Podcast. Don’t always agree with the writing on the site, but if the podcast can keep up this quality, I’ll listen to it every time. Nice one

  35. Joppa Road

Very interesting in that the podcast started with talking about moving wit the times (GG) and is ending with Wenger having to move with the times.

  36. Joppa Road

I love listening to stuff which involves the history of the club and things I didn’t know that were going on at the time.

Could have listened to another three hours of that. Bet he had plenty more to say as well.

  37. Bade

Some strong valid critics he run there about Arsene

    You can’t fault his arguments

Arsene, move with time, or move on!
