Thierry lands – Good or bad signing? | Oxo loving life | New Years nominations please!

by & filed under News Review.

So the word on the street is that Thierry will agree a deal to come back to Arsenal within the next 24 hours. He’ll join on loan for two months and he’ll cover for Chamakh and Gervinho when he comes back. Opinion is split on Thierry. Some think this loan move will tarnish his reputation. I say it didn’t do Sol any harm. Some say it’s a regressive step. I’d agree. I think it’s taking the cheap option and it feels 50% a marketing ploy. Some say this shouldn’t come at the expense of a major signing. I agree, but sadly, I struggle to see us moving for Podolski/Cavani/Messi now.

He’ll come back, maybe slightly humbled by the fan love that was shown at the statue unveiling and I’m sure he’ll come armed with the desire of 100 Vermaelen’s. He doesn’t have something to prove… but at the same time, he absolutely does. Can he still hack it? Does he still have the brain and the pace to threaten Premier League defences? Can he fill the giant boots and utilise the mega pot of wet look gel Chamakh leaves behind?

Chamakh hair product... for a 16 minute cameo.

I think yes… but I’m disappointed for the 3rd year running we have to call on the old guard to patch up a squad put together on a shoe string budget (Does Beckham and his wow factor count as another year?). Still, what a band-aid eh? He can finish in the box, he can take freekicks, he can head the ball (speak to Robin), he can pass, he can cross, he can assist (Robin likes assists)… just all at a slightly slower pace!

One thing Thierry, because I know you have google alerts set up for your name… none of that saintly balderdash. It’s not cool to be everyone’s best friend, unless someone calls you a racist, homophobe or a bigot. Then you can make up your best friends to shut people the hell up. I hope you get my point.

Just so you know, Wenger thinks signing a left back isn’t a good idea now. Not when he has Gibbs coming back in a month. Really? Is no one at board level questioning that statement? Always the minimum he can never get away with…

Oxo has literally been loving his new job at Arsenal. He landed a tidy pay rise, Frimpong introduced him to a ‘too cool for school’ word and Arshavin taught him how to conserve energy on the pitch and say hilariously misogynistic things in the dressing rooms. He’s also loving Arsene Wenger…

“The main thing he’s said to me is that I’ve got the ability to play at this level and it’s just how much I want it. That just sums it up for me really.

“I know I just have to keep working hard, get my head down and keep pushing to put pressure on him to select me. It’s encouraging to hear him say that to me because it’s always good advice.

It’s nice to read that he’s hungry to play and eager to learn. I think there’s always a danger we over hype players at Arsenal, but I’m genuinely excited about this tricky winger. He has natural ability. He’s a footballer first, athlete second. With a good attitude and the right chances, he could go on to be a very efficient player for us.

There were stories about us signing a Barca under 21 striker who was out of contract. For me, I’d rather steer clear of them. They’re a special breed those kids, but they’re brainwashed. Like athletic, technically gifted footballer children of the Barcelona 5th Brigade of the Tiki-Taka Church Sect. Why go for players you can’t plan ahead with? If they come good, they want to go back, if they bomb, you’re lumbered with them. It’s a no win situation and it’s destabilising.

Funny that it’s happening to Chelsea thought. Very funny. I bet they wish it was Torres they were tapping up.

Other than that, today will most likely be Thierry day! Let your thoughts be known in the comments section!

P.S. Let’s play a game today…

  1. Best Goal of the season
  2. Best moment of the season
  3. Best Player
  4. Worst Player
  5. Arsenal Teams new years resolution

I’ll compile the best answers and if I can muster the energy, we’ll run a poll New Years Eve and announce the winners new years day.

What an Arsenal blog we are…

    lurch-

    you hearing things? ;)

i imagine he would not be pleased. perhaps he should look at his play and reevaluate his abilities and opportunities. then he should talk with jack the lad…

  2. Lurch LeRouge

playing for Mcleish doesn’t have great appeal granted but Birmingham’s defensive record a few seasons back isn’t to be sniffed at.

Bade, i come on here at times and repeat my anti wenger comments , and it becomes repetitve to me and some posters. I love Arsenal, but wish i didnt. i remember watching as a small boy the 1971 (yes 1971) cup final and the feeling i had when charlie george scored, and we got the double that year. I remember crying in 1972 when allan clarke scored leeds winner in cup final. I hate how money has taken over and find it totally obscene the money that some players earn who havnt got a tenth of the spirit, passion and love of the club they play for. I hate the exploitation of fans at the expense of making profit. its modern football now and big business. Gunner2301 articulated it very well, better than i can

I would like to ask Wenger where is the strategy? I don’t understand where were going as a club anymore and I don;t think he does either. Project youth failed and there seems to be no visible alternative strategy. Signing Henry doesn’t sound like he’s taking into consideration that at the end of his loan, we still won’t have an alternative to RVP should he get injured. So in reality we still need another capable striker. I don;t expect us to get one because Wenger likes to ride his luck but we do need one.

Some may say who is going to sit on the bench whilst RVP is number one? Well I would say every other top team has more than one able reserve striker of good quality and if we aim to be a top team so should we. Players realise that theyre not going to feature in every game (look at Man City or even Man U).

RVP could do with playing 30% less games over the season (injury and rest), which could go to somebody who is equally as good and it’s not about money. We can afford it. At the moment we are paying for 5 strikers with Henry now. Cut that number by 2 so we have 3 and spread the money amongst them. One who is on a par with RVP and another up and coming Bendtner type.

So the Henry signing looks like a cheap short term move and if we don’t get anyone else this window that is a travesty. The last window Wenger got pressured into action by the fans and the Man U 8-2 drubbing. He wasn’t intending to buy not 5 players anyway. I think we would have ended up with Per and AOC only. Santos added because Traore was finally sent to a club of his level and Gibbs was injured.

So no strategy at the last window. The window before we needed a CB to cover TVs absence we got nobody apart from Wellington Silva and Ryo Myaichi. We ran out of keepers and had to sign Lehman for a few months. We also run Jack into the ground and let him play in nearly 50 games over his first full season.

The window before that we lost 5 PL standard CBs and replaced them with Squillaci and Kos who were not ready for the PL. Kos seems to have worked out but Squillaci hasn’t and is now taking up space in the squad. The (Summer) before that we brought in TV and Campbell.

The whole strategy over the last few years and beyond has cheapness and make do written all over it, remember Silvestre?Whilst the club has pocketed about 150mill from player sales over the last 3 years or so and probably re-invested not even half of that. Beyond the first 11 the quality is quite poor and Wenger sees numbers and not what each player can bring in terms of quality. So we suffer anytime one of the first 11 is missing and anyone coming are so poor we end up over-playing the first 11 because we can’t depend on anyone else.

How can we have one of the biggest squads and wage bill as well as the highest ticket prices and not have 2nd string players who can come in and do a job? How could we not find a RB out of this big squad instead of spending on Jenkinson?

The start of project youth has murdered our club. The only people to benefit are the players themselves and Wengers ego. We have become a selling club who will sell to anyone even our closest rivals. Money is the be all and end all. This policy will never see us keep our best players in their best years as we like to cash in when they peak. Sad but true.

Wenger is no longer a manager he is a financier, playing banker. The statement of 4th being a trophy (for the fans) signifies he has given up football management as his priority and he is all about finance and balancing the books (which is his new trophy). For the money he is earning and the investment in the scouting network we should be getting a better return rather than the raw deal being served up to us.

The propaganda about not having money to spend is ludicrious if that’s the case then Wenger should have been sacked for his shit purchases and mismanagement of the squad and wages long ago. First it was the wage structure until Ivan revealed this year that there wasn’t a wage structure (as a limiting factor). We paid Henry 200k pw in his last season with us. We offered Fabregas the same before he decided money wasn’t everything and fucked off. No doubt we would have offered Nasri stupid money also. They are selling us a story. We could easily bring in a quality striker on 150k pw, but we wont because the club know the fans will put up with the mediocrity they are serving up.

  5. Lurch LeRouge

Bentley’s problem was his gifted foot and the Beckham comparison.

Think frimmers has his feet a little more planted

  6. Gunner2301

    Ghost

I did the same thing. I haven’t been to a home match in 3 years because of the rip off nature of the Club and lack of atmosphere at the Emirates and haven;t bought any merchandise either. I then started going to away matches for the atmosphere and it was better value for money but then stopped that off too. I refuse to pay money into the club until I can equate what I see on the pitch with what they are charging and I can’t.

This will not change whilst Wenger is still there. He has sold them a vision of making money out of the club whilst doing it on the cheap, whilst maintaining CL status and they have calculated the minimum they can do to achieve this whilst keeping capacity at the ground. They will push even further with ticket price increase as long as theres a waiting list they know they can do it and the makeup of the crowd doesn;t matter anymore they’re just interested in bodies not fans. Sad really considering the atmosphere and comradery that existed at Highbury. They’ve sold us out.

  7. Gunner2301

    Bade

It doesn’t really matter mate those who choose to read it will. Maybe I need a blog of my own :) I don’t expect everyone to read what I say or agree with me I’m just sick of what’s going on and how we’re being swindled.

  8. Lurch LeRouge

its a clump of degenerate mutagenic cells Bade, it appears green under the harsh glare of scrutiny – probably down to its recent evolution from slime.

It can’t really move very fast, in fact its caught in perpetual stasis, ironically it has an extremely high opinion of itself.

  9. Pat

Gerrard is past it Lurch. I’m expecting a real change in our midfield game once Wilshere returns, if he can avoid the little niggles that often accompany after a long injury layoff

  10. Lurch LeRouge

hope your right Pat, Gerrard’s got a lot to play for with the Euro’s on the horizon and one can’t deny the effect he has on the Kop, positive feedback that, in turn, has on the rest of the squad.

  11. Bade

For most of the managers the transfer window is a good opportunity to re evaluate their squads, to add in the needed areas and freshen up the lines

For Arsene it’s just another phase of stubbornness and good chance to mock the fans

  12. gunnergetyou

It will be great when wilshire comes back but mid february feels a long way away right now, by that time the damage would have already been done, its already been done anyway

  13. Bade

    Ok

    I’m done for tonight

Tomorrow I’m hone so I’ll be drinking early already, so you’ll find me here throughout the most of the day

Oh, and it’s a match day

  14. Trickygonner

    4- Marouane Chammakh
    5- Spending much more

  16. goonermart

Good posts Gunner2301. We are definitely lacking ambition and direction, it’s embarrassing and depressing. We should be challenging for the title not fucking fighting for fourth.

We have a squad that now sits 6th, but all wenger cares about is that we have a big squad, a big squad full of shit.

We are not good enough, so why can’t wenger just admit it. Why can’t he come out and say he wants to strengthen, what the fuck is wrong with that?

It makes it even more sickening that the scum are showing more ambition than us. I fucking hate him.

Gunner2301. great post’s i too have steadfastly refused to go to the emirate’s to watch the current team that call’s itself the arsenal i too stood at wembly in 71 block h55, was at white hart lane as well, wont spend any of my hard earned cash till the con-man called Wenger has either left or sacked and i cant see that happening to be honest!! the board /wenger have turned our club into a souless team with no heart and passion and has isolated a whole generation of fan’s who feel trapped and dont know what to do!! you cant protest as the flag say’s arsene know’s best!! well he can do it without me as iv finally giving up supporting a team of loser’s!! arsenal will alway’s be in my heart but you wenger you spineless twat have destroyed it for me!!

  20. Maciek

Spot on Reggie 57, but Wenger will be here no matter how we cope. Even if we are relegated some jokers from owill be shouting “One Arsene Wenger”. He is worshipped by too many fans around the globe.

When RVP is gone we will need something like 100m pounds to spend.

I whink that soon the Spuds will overtake us and we will be aiming for the Europa League spot.

    Sad, but true.

    Take care!

  21. AA23

    I’m back for 2 minutes
best goal =Arsenal’s team goal vs. Barcelona

    Gunner2301@20:38 and Reggie57@22:46

Good shout lads. Hit the fuckers in the pockets and they might just learn a thing or two.

  23. frenchie

mick is hard nosed, and i like that, but i still remember two of my irish pals arguing about who was a bigger cunt: “mick mcarty” or roy keane. they could not resolve the issue.

  24. Lurch LeRouge

    786,

this is 2 days old but broke before the rest on the Henry deal…

    AFC_Wheeler Wheeler
Thierry Henry will be unveiled as an Arsenal player on a short-term-deal on monday, and Podolski should be signing mid-January. #AFC

  25. Josip Skoblar

    Hi Lurch,

Arsenal, Schalke 09, Fiorentina, Napoli and… PSG have apparently shown an interest in Podolski. If he leaves Cologne, then I’d be quite confident that he would join us… should Wenger really want it! The presence of Mert is a big plus. He has been on form in the Bundeslinga. I would love it.

  26. frenchie

    lurch-

why do you insist on using words like platitude? i mean, can you say innocuous colloquialism, or cliche’, or prosaicism?

so annoying, you erudite fuck… ;)

  27. slater_burns

Best Goal of the season – RVP from Song vs. Dortmund
Best moment of the season – Beating Barca
    Best Player – RVP
    Worst Player – Bendtner
Arsenal Teams new years resolution – Solidify the mid

  28. Lurch LeRouge

    Josip

we never fair so well in bidding wars, I wasn’t aware so much interest had been shown by rivals, not ideal.

Napoli & PSG would be pretty interesting prospects for him as well.

  29. Lurch LeRouge

ok ok i know but i canee help it

    thegoonblog Martin Cafferty
And I leave you with this bombshell. Had a conversation today and apparently #afc are right in for Podolski, very keen. Right, i;m ofski.

  30. Lurch LeRouge

theres a lot of noise incesc but interestingly not so much from the aggregators…John Cross hasn’t let go of it all week either…

  31. Robert

Chamakh shouldnt be canned as much as he is.

Playing in our rubbish attacking system, with the worst crossers of the ball in the entire EPL, and now playing no more than 20mins a week. Pretty harshly judged in my opinion.

If he played with another striker, with someone like mata hitting his head a few times a game, he would look a lot better.

I think our system is terrible for a striker to thrive in. One needs to be a superstar forward to even have any value. Having good crossers of the ball would certainly help out our big forwards out.

  32. Geoff

So we re-sign Henry, I don’t have a problem with that because he’s better than nothing, and outside of RVP, we have nothing, but he is twice as good as Chamakh and Park combined.

But to sign no one, is fucking madness, but then I have said he was mad since I wrote a post called the Emperors clothes after the Wigan match when Eboue got booed off some years ago.

I love Henry and I’m sure he’ll be great again, but then he’ll go and we’ll get Chamakh back.

He should have used this window to sell Diaby, Rosicky, Squillaci, Chamakh and give Lille Park for Hazard and cash. But oh no…

Finally to call him super intelligent is amazing, Hawking is super intelligent, Henry is a great footballer, but then Wenger thinks Song is intelligent so I’ll leave that there.

Another bit of Wenger’s legacy died in this window, I still love Henry though, I still have a framed signed by him picture in my dining room as well, so welcome back Thierry!

    Time to go Arsene.

  33. Bade

    Morning Geoff.

People still hoping Arsene will change?

Like the man just found his wife shagging somebody, then she told him I’m sorry I won’t do it again, so he believed her. Then again he caught her shagging another one. Again she apologized, again he believed her. Then again she was busted shagging, then again she said she’s sorry and won’t do it again, so he believed her again. And the circle goes on

The main difference is that the wife was apologizing, but Arsene will never apologize……

  34. Bade

Arsene many people will be happy to slag all the Doomers

Come one you Mr optimist, sign 3 world class players. Show us how wrong we were to judge you…..

    brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  35. Bade

And happy new year to you all, Geoff, Pedro, Fellow Grovers and gooners, and everyone basically….. even you Arsene!

    Happy new year!

Next year it’s going to be The Arsenal’s…..

  36. DeiseGooner

Fuck me Geoff are you telling me i just slept through a whole month … and here i was thinking i had a terrible nights sleep with 4 hours kip combined ;)

AN EARLY HAPPY NEW YEARS TO MY FELLOW GOONERS.

  37. Ricky

The fact that we need Henry just shows how backwards we’ve gone since he’s departure. All these years gone & retirement looming he’s still better then all of our attackers except robin.

These are not good signs for afc. We might aswell of recalled anelka & tried to get cole back to
