Robin returns | Andrey to Germany | Arsenal fans awful

November 12, 2011

Goooood morning Grovers! Well those of you that can see the site. Apologies for the many problems we’ve been having over the past few days. Let me quickly explain…

We’ve been housed as a site on WordPress servers for the last 4 years. That means that everything works all the time, but very little changes. It also meant we couldn’t redesign the site. An issue I know many of you have raised over the past year.

So, I took the plunge this week and shifted over to our own server. From there we’ll begin to tweak the site, integrate new features and hopefully, if God grants me the the earning power, we’ll overhaul the design and bring out an app. You’ll still be able to login via Twitter and Facebook, they’ll ask you if you want to let Le Grove give you access to your e-mail, don’t worry, it’s nothing sinister, it’s the minimum requirement, I won’t be doing anything with your data. Those of you on our mailing list might have to wait while I sort that out. You’ll also be pleased the mobile site is looking superb again.

Why is anyone surprised RVP hasn’t signed a new contract with Arsenal?

November 11, 2011

As PHW said, he is a decent chap and will sign in the summer, about the same time the big boys are hovering and he becomes 29 and is only worth a one year deal, unless of course he is French (Squillaci) or he is a panic buy (Arteta)

And anyway, by then he’ll probably be injured and we will be clamouring for Park to sign an extended contract as he’ll be the new superstar.

I have always loved Robin but he has always been a crock and to be honest I have often questioned his worth, I still do because as sure as eggs are eggs he has a three month injury in him somewhere, and as much as I adore watching him, I know it will never be for a whole season, so do I want him to sign a new contract? You bet I do, am I in a hurry? No way, let it wait until we need to, he owes us that at the very least.

Oxo, the future had a good game for England last night but he is still just a boy and at least 3 years off being ready to make a start, Jack on the other hand is closing in on fitness but the really great news is Abou Diaby is almost ready for his next injury.

I do wonder when Wenger will stop telling us he is on his way back and will make a big impact, I have said many times on here Diaby is a top player that can make the difference (either way) in games, but I have also said he is injured far more often than he is fit, and how long does one keep paying him £60k a week to sit on his arse? Me I would give him till Christmas, then I would sell him and bring in someone like M’vila, no more, he has had his chances.

Don’t forget he signed at the same time as Adebayor and Theo, think about that!

I  rate him highly though, but like Robin, you have to make a decision.

Just to get back to the Van Persie situation and how calm Arsenal are about him signing a new contract, I seem to remember the same rhetoric about Nasri last season, then the old lame excuse about how great Wenger was getting £25mil for him as he was after all in his last year, hmmmm, isn’t that the same as RVP now? Or is that just me being a silly Billy?

Had he sold Nasri last Christmas, that £25mil could have been £40mil.

Anyway Grover’s, have a fine day, it may be cloudy but Spring will soon be upon us and the sunshine will pop out again, if I’m wrong, then judge me in May.

P.S. You may have noticed some strange goings on yesterday, well, that was us shifting over to our own shiny new server. Nothing really changes for you, but it gives us a chances to develop the site over the coming months and it gives us more freedom. If you notice any problems, drop me an e-mail at the same place, other than that, it’s business as usual!

Coquelin and Arshavin warn play me or I’m off, don’t hold your breath Franny!

November 10, 2011

The first thing Franny needs to learn is you can’t dislodge a Wenger poster boy, and he has at least one of those ahead of him, stick in there boy, your chance will come. Though I would like to see him feature more, last season we only had Denilson as competition to the mercurial Song, now we have two, Frimpong and Coquelin, so at least it’s competition.

Arshavin on the other hand has dropped down the pecking order because of poor form, he’s right when he says that he knows he’ll come off or on between 67 and 74 minutes because that’s when Mr creature of habit Arsene Wenger makes his substitutions, not when he needs them, but when he always makes them, that’s what makes us so predictable.

If Arshavin played with a bit more consistancy then he may get more playing time, try playing him in the hole boss, you may find that if you play your expensive players where they are good, you could get more out of them, not a criticism, I’m just putting it out there.

Jenkinson gets lavish praise and I have to agree that his game has picked up so let’s hope he can keep up the good work until Sagna gets back.

Santos is growing on me, I like his attitude more than his defending, but I like him, he has a bit of the Horse in him.

I wonder why Squillaci hasn’t threatened to leave? I wonder if it’s because he knows where his bread is buttered and getting paid shed loads for being useless is better than playing for Seville, well if he hasn’t, he probably should.

I asked a mate of mine who supports West ham what he thought of our current number 1 Manuel Almunia? Flipping useless he said, and beleive me, he really didn’t say ‘Flipping’

Makes you wonder why we still have Bendtner, Almunia and Denilson on our books doesn’t it, I expect it’s a combination of them being overpaid and completely hopeless, so why on earth have they played so many games for us eh?

Anyway, another boring week when the most exciting thing to happen was the argument over Poppies, the FA should just tell FIFA to swivel, funny that, we told the Kaiser and Hitler to get stuffed, but we do what Sepp Blatter and his corrupt FIFA officials tell us, shame on you the FA, shame on you.

I know they said yes to armbands, but not to shirts and that is an insult to the millions who lost their lives in two World wars, on both sides.

Have a great day Grovers, only a week to go!

Kreus / Großkreutz / German supermarkets / Points comparisons and plenty more Arsenal gossip inside!

November 9, 2011

What? Things are quiet…

Not good enough?

Ok… Well, all the papers are rehashing transfer stories that are 3 days old. The Independent has us in for Marco Reus off the back of a Mad Jens recommendation. The coach said Wenger called him and he told him the German lad was good but he didn’t want to lose him. Jeez… smart move there!

Reus, or Nik B's ginger cousin?

It seems Wenger has found a new super market to shop in. He’s done with CarreFour and its over priced goods. He’s discovered Aldi and he can’t stop bragging about the award winning / low cost German product he’s discovered.

I’m surprised it’s taken so long for clubs to look to the German league, the Bundasliga is often the most represented at the International tournaments. The league has a high level of technical ability and German teams are no push overs when it comes to the Champions League.

We’re still scouting Gotze. I’m really struggling with this one. The youngster doesn’t want to leave, we’re highly unlikely to have £35mill to splash on one player and we have Jack and Rambo? I’d say it’s more likely we’re scouting Dortmund as a whole. Why would you need to keep scouting the best young player in Germany? It’d be like scouting Jack Wilshere. The extended rumour here is we’re looking at his mate as well… Kevin Großkreutz. The wideman is already my hero, there’s no videos of his footballing ability, but there is a German video titled, ‘so pi*sed he puked‘.

I love that. You should too. Let’s set up a petition to sign him.

Grosskreuz...Nik B's special cousin?

Also in the news is the story that Frimpong will be sent out on loan to Norwich or Swansea. Great idea. Let him learn to keep his cool and refine his passing elsewhere. Finally, we appear to be learning. Love the boys passion but you can’t have a liability in your squad.

There were rumblings from Spain that M’Villa might be moving in the next window. Now if there was a move that made sense, it’s this one. As far as I’m aware, Song hasn’t opened talks with the club, he’s 24 years old, the nearest competitor to his position is a 20 year old who  has played 1 Premiership game. We need to bolster the middle of the Park Chu-Young sharpish because although we’re all praising the importance of keeping Robin fit, I’d say keeping the man from Cameroon fit almost as important.

Chair trouble…

Someone e-mailed me anonymously about their concerns over the stability of the chairs at Arsenal. Don’t worry, they’re very robust and very wide, don’t let that put you off buying a ticket if you’re reading!

Confidence…

I’ve been reading around some of the sites and I’m not sure whether it’s just a reaction to the run compared to where we were, but certain sections of the fanbase seem to be jumping on the vindication band wagon like we’re out the woods and everything is ok. This pattern has emerged plenty over the past few years. Some sites were celebrating winning the league in January last year. We’re doing well, but be aware, our squad is still very fragile and our potency up front still hangs very much on one man.

I don’t want to dampen the excitement, but a little too much unjustified ‘we’ve got 4th in the bag is going on.

La Liga…

Interesting to read the thoughts of the Barca President. He reckons he’d never sell Barca to one person and criticised the British model of single owner ownership.

Fair point, but being part of a model where 2 clubs take 60% of the TV revenue is hardly a bragging point. La Liga will look at the issue in maybe 5 years, but only if the league is reduced to 16. Greed is greed however you package it!

Happy thoughts…!

Finally, I’ll leave you with the below table… a nice, positive, happy note I was sent by a Grover who goes by the name of Jim.

With all the gloom (me included) that enmeshed our club pre season and early season I was minded to compare last season’s results, to date, game for game, with this season’s results. The only adjustment I had to make was to include the home fixture against Blackpool, last season, to set against the Swansea fixture this season.

The outcome will surprise many,I believe.

Here it is:

Last Season: Played 11, Goals for 23, Goals against 16,Goal difference +7,Points gained 16.

This Season: Played 11, Goals for 23, Goals against 21,Goal difference 2, Points gained 19.

3 points better off this season!

Goal difference 5 worse which can largely put down to the Home Blackpool/Swansea score lines, which account for a 5 goal differential.

Happy days!

P.S. Sue Ryder, the charity, are organising a Charity football tournament you can enter. Nigel Winterburn is there, take a look here.

Exclusive: Arsenal medical team give Le Grove fantastic insight into their operation

November 8, 2011

Nice car park

So Arsenal invited Le Grove and a number of other bloggers to attend a tour of the new medical facilities at London Colney. They added an extra layer of excitement by allowing us access to club doctor Gary O’Driscoll and Club Physio Colin Lewin. There was no tour group of 50. There were two of us (How strange, I actually recognised Jules from the Arsenal catalogue, catch her here). We were escorted around the training ground by Tom from PR, who, just for the record is a massive Arsenal fan as well.

I have no idea how to structure the article, so I’ll just churn out all the information I gathered and hope that I can communicate what an interesting couple of hours it was.

Firstly, the question everyone is dying to know. Do Arsenal have a corporate team? Yes they do. They play 11 aside football and yes, Ivan puts on a pair of Nike Mecurials and mixes it with the rest of them. I didn’t find out what position he played, but good to know he’s not too senior to muck in with the lads.

Table tennis + arm

We were firstly shown around the indoor pitch. I’m sure you’ve all seen it on Arsenal.com, it’s huge, it has to 3/4 pitches and it’s astro turfed. The 1st team players rarely play in it due to the adverse reaction the hard 3G turf can have on the muscles. It’s mainly for the kids. It’s an impressive structure and quite creepy when there’s only 4 of you… if I could get out of this room without a hit on my life, I felt I’d be ok for the day.

Colin got stuck straight into some of the things that irked him, top of his list was using injury analysis site, Physio Room. He thinks the league tables are a nonsense, 1) because they take return dates from newspapers 2) because they don’t take into account the size of squads. Wigan being judged on 20 players is skewed when Arsenal are racking up points for 45. It also doesn’t take into account that we play in Europe. If you’re playing 60+ games versus 40, you’ll obviously feature higher in the league table as you have more pressure on your squad.

Colin making his a point of his image rights (left), Gary tells us about his computer.

I pointed out early on that whenever we’ve spoken about injuries at Arsenal, we usually point out it’s not the medical staff who put the players there… he agreed by saying you don’t blame the paramedics for an accident on the M1, but equally, he said they have a part to play in it and that it’s a team effort to get players fit.

Steve Bould walked past and said good night.

I asked why our injury record was so much better last year in comparison to years gone past. This answer was quite interesting and definitely opened my eyes to the blurred grey lines when analysing injuries.

Colin said 2 years ago we had a shocking season when it came to injuries. He said averagely, you expect 1-2 fractures in a year. They had 7. When 7 players suffer fractures, you reduce the squad by 7 players, then you put more strain on less players, which results in fatigue, which equates to more soft tissue injuries.

So broken legs has a knock on effect for more than just the player suffering.

We took a wander into Gary O’Driscoll’s office. He’s a softly spoken Irishman, very intelligent and very passionate about what he’s doing at the club. He’s been there three years. Colin has been there since 1995, again, very sharp and very knowledgable about the whole rehab process from start to finish. Both were keen all day to stress they don’t know everything and the job is a constant learning process.

Arsene Wenger sits in the office opposite him Gary, so he has to keep his desk tidy. They have a computer system they operate called Edge10. It’s a little bit like the screen you’d operate in Championship Manager. It’s like a football ERP (Think SAP or SagePay). It has all the players medical records, their status, their nutritional info, medication, Prozone stats and their GPS data. A fascinating system any Arsenal fan would love to rummage around with for a few hours!

I asked how GPS had impacted on the club. They both became pretty animated. Gary said the club were just scratching the surface with what they could do with the system. It measures everything and it gives them a fantastic array of data sets to measure fatigue, body loading and distance run. Gary went on…

‘At the moment, using the system is an art form, we want to turn it into a science’

That was really interesting. They’ve been using the system for 2 years (not the season and a bit originally reported) and they have built up some fantastic data, but they have to dig around in it to work out which parameters mean what.

It’s a game of trial and error. You form a baseline for a player and you can work out when they max out. When it really comes in handy is when a player gets injured and the new data is built into the system. It helps you manage recuperation more efficiently.

They’re basically player profiling and it takes a while to maximise the benefits. It doesn’t take 18 months though. It takes about 2 months to build a workable player baseline, then the more data you add, the better you understand what’s going on. The club are bringing on two graduates to help take understanding to the next level.

I asked how football stacked up against rugby. The candid answer was that it’s still a few years behind. They’ve been using sports science for longer, mainly due to the nature of the game. It’s more about impact and their was more pressure to use it.

Gary said the system worked in different ways for the different sports, so the learnings he had from egg chasing haven’t been a massive help for football. Different parameters have to be defined. That’s not to say they haven’t been to see how it operates with the rugby clubs, last year Gary went over to meet with the then European Champions Leinster for a few meetings.

We were also shown some Champions League data that showed a study of all the Champions League clubs over the past year. Arsenal were mid-table when it came to injuries per 1000 hours trained and played.

I asked if much knowledge was shared between clubs and apparently there is without giving away too many secrets. Arsenal have good relations with the Spurs and Chelsea medical teams and they all speak to each other. It’s a bit of community. It wouldn’t really be in the spirit of medicine if they didn’t share info that helped support the well being of people.

He said that the facilities and the way the club do things in the medical area is well backed by the players. Yossi Benayoun rates what is going on at Arsenal and Per Mertesacker and Santos are said to be very trusting of staff even at this early stage.

Drugs cabinet under lock and key

The topic of drugs came up. The staff at Arsenal are very keen to ensure no one does a ‘Kolo’ (stealing his wifes diet pills and keeping it secret) and ingest something they shouldn’t. Testing is rigorous. I asked if they thought the sport was clean. They were both categoric. Yes it us.

  • There is 1 spot inspection by UEFA at training
  • They are tested at 3 games by UEFA
  • The FA do 4 random tests
  • The Premier League do 4
The club have a massive drugs cabinet. Any supplement the players take is sent off to the labs at Arsenal’s expense to make sure it fits the guidelines. All supplements are kept in a locked cabinet. Andre has two drawers worth!
He said that old clubs are very helpful when passing on details of new players. The Yossi medical didn’t happen until after, but Chelsea were very honest and up front about the player and his health. So far, it looks to have paid off, he’s only missed training for two weeks. Apparently during deadline day, the two medical men sat in with the Chief Exec and Wenger. We were in for 7-8 players after noon!

GPS and Prozone do their analysis in here... the room was locked.

The reason Ryo has been out is a double ankle knock…

The topic of Diaby and Gibbs was raised. There are high hopes that Gibbs will find fitness as he’s still developing skeletally. Diaby is just a bit of a

nightmare due to the horror injury he had all those years ago. He doesn’t suffer from recurring injuries though… which they were keen to stress.

I asked if being exposed to lots of games young had an affect on players as they got older. Colin said it was a tough question to answer as there were too many variables but he said it was dependent on the player.

He said Jack was merely unlucky and Gary said that the Cesc injury wasn’t down to scar tissue on his hamstring, it was a far more complex problem, he never actually had a grade 2 or 3 tear.. I asked what they thought about the Barca surgeon piping up. Gary said they were disappointed but firstly the surgeon wasn’t on the pay role as an official employee of Barca, secondly, they’re having the same issues. Colin said they all loved Cesc… which was nice.

I also didn’t shirk asking the question about over training. Colin said that over training can lead to fatigue injuries, but that is weighted against the back drop of it also giving us an advantage in the last 10. An advantage we’ve used to great effect. He said it’s a dilemma all teams face. Ultimately, it’s the managers call and ultra fit players is Wenger’s preference.

GPS can help inform decisions about fatigue though. The manager still makes the final decision call on who plays. Tech isn’t advanced enough to take on that role yet. I guess you also have to consider what the risk of dropping a fatigued Robin against United in an Champions League Semi Final would do. The grey blurred line… rest a player, lose a game. Play a player, win a game, pick up an injury. What do you do?

When Freddie Ljungberg said he never used the Arsenal gym… he lied. Chamberlain will probably end up being the strongest player on the team if early signs are anything to go by!

No gravity tread mill

Weight issues with players can go both ways. If they are over played they can lose it, if they aren’t watched, some can pack it on. If the boss says to a player you need to bulk, that is what has to happen. No questions.

The windows in the rehab gym open automatically to regulate temperature.

In the players dressing room, Theo is the DJ. Players are given exact nutritional instructions. They have tailored programs and are told what they can and cannot eat. Fit players are given recovery drinks after the game, injured players are given protein shakes so they don’t waste away. I tried a bit of Kieran Gibbs shake that he left… not bad stuff!

What you go in if you score an own goal

The players are also given weekly hydration tests. If they fail, they are given the special fluids to get them back on top. Again, another precautionary method to stop muscle fatigue. Last year, players weren’t good at completing this task, this year they’re far more on top of the game.

It sounds like Gary has done a good job building process into the players lives. The medical team do all they can so the players don’t need to think about preventative methods to improve their fitness…

Other stuff…
  • There are 3 full time massage chaps, players can opt in and put their name on the boards. The medical staff write who needs what and the staff get to work. Some prankster had written ‘ugly’ next to Frimpong’s name.
  • Tales of outsourced fitness coaches for Robin and Cesc are wide of the mark. All fitness is done in house. Cesc did bring his trainer over for a few weeks, but it was nothing sinister. Robin didn’t. He did however rub horse placenta into his ankle. Not that it worked… That said, the club don’t mind if players want to do their own things… as long as they’re informed of what they’re doing.
  • The club have put a new plunge pool in the training ground. You can cool it to 3 degrees. Some players spend 3-4minutes in there. Imagine the state of your chap after that?
  • The floor in the pool moves up and down depending on what excercises they’re doing in a warm down. The coaches can see into the pool to check they’re doing it properly…
  • I asked what injury Colin was most proud of rehabilitating, highlighting the Aaron one. He said he was happy with that, but it was pretty standard. They’re trained into the ground to deal with those. He said the Gibbs broken foot was a nasty one and he was happy with how that was turned around.
  • 60% of the Arsenal squad have their ankles strapped before training.
  • Jack is in almost everyday now. They’re keeping an eye on his injury. Hopefully he’ll be back and playing by February. The same goes for Sagna. Don’t expect miracles.
  • The clubs gym is pretty cool. They have some pretty crazy machines that use air compression as the weights.
  • Typical training sessions last 1 hour.
  • Colin thinks we should have a winter break, we lose out to foreign clubs in the Champions League because of it. We also suffer as a nation come the international championships.
  • He said it was really difficult working when the results were so poor. The whole club was affected. The positivity is back though and the players and management are buzzing. He said the players are a great bunch of lads.
  • He grew up a West Ham fan, but after being with us so long, he’d cheer an Arsenal goal against his home team.
  • Looking forward he wants to improve how they use GPS, work on better preventative actions, he reckons genetics will play are part in player assessment in the future (but we’re no where near now, despite what you’ve read in the press) and most important to him is making sure he’s always on top of the staffing levels.
  • Arsenal are throwing a conference where they’ll bring in the best speakers in world in sport. Doctors, scientists and people in the medical hardware industry will come and talk to people from different sports hosted by Arsenal.
  • Gazidis has been a very supportive CEO when it comes to investing in technology and people.
  • The number of injuries so far this year are up, but the severity is down. Treatment is easy, preventing injuries is the hard bit!
  • He is happy to take the blame for recurring injuries. He’ll accept part of the blame for Vermaelen and is happy to be shot down when his team deserve is, but he wants people to understand that they can’t be blamed for everything.
  • Arsenal have flight best practice for the players. They supply them with compression socks and advise them on how to sleep and how to hydrate effectively.
  • Fans have to accept African and South American players who get back on Friday will not play on a Saturday.
  • Medical staff have fought to move internationals to Fridays and Tuesdays to increase recovery time so players can play for their clubs.
  • They don’t get to see the youngsters play… but they all knew Jack was going to be a superstar!
Conclusion…

It was an excellent 90 minutes. I hope the write up has done the day justice and I hope you feel more informed about the effort that goes into the fitness of the players. Gary and Colin were a credit to the club. I think what shone through is how much they give a crap. They both seemed genuinely aggrieved that they were being given a rough ride in the media and by the fans when they have been doing everything they can to make things better.

The backroom sounds like it’s moving to another level, even compared to last year. We’re now keeping injury prone players fitter for longer. Arteta has done well so far and we haven’t seen a breakdown of Yossi or Robin. I’m sure the injuries will happen, they always do, but at least we’re now seeing the benefits of greater technology integration and a more process driven injury prevention program.

All in all, a great day. Well played to Arsenal for letting me have access to two staff members, I applaud the transparency. Also, a big thanks to the AST for suggesting this to the board. Again, another reason to sign up to a very worthwhile supporters trust.

Right… I’m out all day. See you in the comments later!

New German superstar on radar + video | Early kickoffs as standard? | Jack Wilshere <3 Arsenal

November 7, 2011

The Premiership is a bit like watching a really good TV show in the States. Just as things start to hot up, it cuts to a really boring 2 week commercial break. We all go out and make a two-week cup of tea, reintroduce ourselves to the family, slowly realise life would be very dull without football then bang… we’re back again. Rescued in time for Christmas.

This break has come at an awkward time because we’ve just started finding the net again. Robin is off to Holland which, who do not typically treat the Dutchman with care. So a bit of a worry there.

Our other fragile product is safe at Colney… Arteta took time out to speak with the press.

“We’ve been working on being a bit more solid but I like to get forward, get freedom and I like to score goals,”

“I want to participate more on the attacking side so I did that and I’m pleased with that. I’ve not had a lot of time to settle. We’ve been under a lot of pressure to win games – we’ve needed results. But I’ve only been here two months. There’s a lot of things to learn, a lot of things to improve, and hopefully I can do that.”

Glad to hear he still has his feet on the ground and knows there is work to be done. Arsenal.com has been far more bearable this year mainly down to the realism. Rolling out Eboue, Denilson and Nik B to assure us everything is in safe hands hasn’t been an option this year which is definitely a positive. It’s nice to hear that Arteta likes to contribute to the attack, but hasn’t. Shows that he doesn’t have the selfish streak. A good job too, his discipline has certainly factored highly in our recent resurgence.

Wenger…

The coach had high praise for Arteta

“He is an important player for our team,”

“He is really a player between Song and Ramsey or Rosicky and that gives us continuity.

“He is adapting to our game. If you look at the stats in the Premier League, Arsenal are the team who play the least balls backwards.

“That means when you have the ball it is not only a question of decision-making, it’s a question of opportunity. It’s about how many players you have in front of you – if you have players behind you have to play it backwards.”

I must confess, I missed the stat for the team that plays the ball least backwards last week, but it’s good to see we’re winning. Was that a slight jab at Denilson? Possibly… There’s not doubt his next comment was a below the belt right hook at International football.

“It shows what I always say – 90 per cent of a player’s career is the club. It’s the club who makes the career of the players. If he was English he would have an international career here.”

Bravo. Totally agree. If Ray Parlour’s career was based purely on international football, he’d be classed a failure. Even though domestically, it was quite the opposite. International football is losing its relevance among domestic fans. I wonder how long before they have to have a serious rethink?

Jack…

Jack took time out to hit the boxing this weekend. He reaffirmed his love for the club by pledging his career to us… I just hope that’s binding! Look at his eyes when he says it, he looks very genuine.

He also said he’d be back training in a month. Hopefully we’ll still have a full compliment of midfielders to choose from and the boss will have a major selection head ache. I’d imagine as it stands Rambo would make way, but it depends how much form the Welshman can put together between now and then! Being able to rotate hungry young midfielders is a good situation to be in.

Check the interview by Kassius Kugan…

London Colney…

I’ll be trekking over to the Medical centre later today to see what has been keeping Diaby busy his whole career. I’ll be meeting with Colin Lewin and Gary O’Driscoll to get shown around the new rehab centre.

It should be interesting to see how much rehab they do in the ground and how much money it costs to manage the health of a modern day player. If you have any questions that are sensible, let me know and I’ll see what I can get answers on. Do remember though, I’ll be meeting with the guys who deal with the problems… after they’ve happened.

German love…

Not contempt with targeting Mario Gotze alone, word on the street has it we’re now in for Marco Reus. The Borussia Monchengladbac midfielder is valued at £15million and by all accounts has been lighting up Germany with his attacking displays since leaving Dortmund for a pittance. His stats read well, last year he played 37 games, scored 12 and assisted 9. This year he’s scored 8 in 14 and had an assist. He’s into the final 2 years of his deal as of the summer and we could pounce.

Become an expert like me by clicking the play button below. Magic stuff.

Midday to stay?

According to the facts, the reason the noon kick offs are so is for maximum exploitation of the middle eastern market and their lust for professional soccer.

Suggestions have been made that to improve revenue streams, all football matches should be moved to 1200 starts. Madrid and Barcelona have joined the party as of this weekend… to grumbles of course. If the Spanish can be bothered to rise before midday, then why not us?

Now, tradition aside, how would you feel?

After two early matches back to back, I think I’d be ok. You get up, head straight out, you don’t need to drink quite so much, then you’re done by 1430 and home between 1500 and 1600. That gives you a bit of time with your kids, a few hours down time if you’re heading out and it avoids travelling after dark… which is known to be scary especially round Halloween time.

As a result, the league could become even wealthier and we’d steal a mark on Europe for that massive chunk of the Asian Market.

Personally, I like the idea. As much as I love a 1500 kick off, it does get testing when the games come in thick and fast. Would it be a change you’d entertain?

Arsenal pull out the spanking stick on West Brom. Ratings and Review

November 6, 2011

What can you say? A professional no frills spanking dished out in orderly fashion on a Saturday 3pm kickoff. Perfect. No stress, no injuries, no bad luck, no concerns.

How queer…

The afternoon had a slight chill in the air, rain clouds teetering on a down pour. The atmosphere was buzzing, form had returned to the team and for the first time in a while, the fans as well. Amazing what a run of form can do for everyone.

The main change from mid week was Laurent in for Mertesacker. The rest of our team was standard starting 11 from what was available.

Laurent made two confident interceptions within the first 5, fan love went into overdrive as he landed himself a mini standing ovation. People are truly appreciating his improvement and dedication to the cause.

The flow of the match was mostly in our favour, we weren’t carving out loads of chances, the closest we went early on was a Robin conversion from 30 yards.

We couldn’t work out who started the move for the first, but it looked like Ramsey who slid in a ball to the right, Theo latched on at pace, he fired down the gullet of the keeper, the shot was parried, Robin was in the right place to turn in his first of the day.

The crowd went wild, one man took it too far though when he started singing ‘sexy Van Persie’… A little too much man love there my friend.

Arsenal were playing some great football and the fans were loving it.

Santos was having a much better game, he was far more efficient on the ball an he was making some timely defensive interceptions.

Koscielny looked to have nearly given a penalty away after Song and Santos fell over trying to defend the build up of a rare WBA attack.

Down the other end, Gervinho was keeping busy. He floated a superb pass at the back post, Robin brought it down and fired it across the area for Vermaelen to expertly finish low and to the right of Foster. An excellent move and a deserved goal from a player who has had a rough old year.

The second half was controlled in the same well organised fashion the first half was. Wenger wasn’t interested in flair these days, he was interested in points.

Robin nearly supplied Verm again from a whipped corner that the Belgian could only head over.

Gervinho carved out a great chance for Rambo with some fancy footwork on the edge of the area, the Welshman could only shoot wide.

Jenkinson was putting in a dogged performance on the right. I love his attitude and his excellent crossing. Bragging about our full backs distribution in attack hasn’t been a regular occurance over the last 5 years.

Ben Foster’s distribution was as bad as it was when he played at the Emirates for Watford. Woeful stuff.

Song tested the keeper after receiving back the one two from Gervinho on the edge of the box, his shot was parried away by the keeper.

Mikel made it 3 after Robin set Rosicky free, the Czech played it back to Robin who cut back to Arteta who was on hand to bury the ball home.

There were a few testing moments at the end. Vermaelen slid in to block a Tchoyi shot. Steven Reid found space from a corner late on after Jenko lost him in the box. Luckily Chezzer was on hand to take care of business.

The whistle blew, game over. 3 more points in the slightly more weighty bag. Watch out Spurs and Liverpool, we’re on a bit of a run!

(…and we landed a clean sheet)

Conclusion…

This doesn’t need a lot of words. The team have worked out how to play with each other, experienced heads are finding form and confidence is seeping back into the team and the fans. A perfect November storm for progress and table climbing.

Ratings

Chezzer: didn’t have a lot to do but dealt with long balls into the box with perfect calmness. 7

Jenko: improving with every game, very solid going forward, needs to keep his concentration at he back. 7.5

Kozzer: solid and dependable. Really benefitting from being no where near Squillaci. 7

Verm: leading at the back and communicating all the time with authority. Great goal as well. 8

Santos: better positional awareness and more efficiency in his passing. 7

Song: bossed the midfield all day. Great Strength, solid passing and nearly a goal. 7.5

Arteta: really solid purchase, great experience and a fighter. Good goal as well. 7.5

Rambo: another game that raised his profile. Our midfield is going to look pretty exciting come January! 7.5

Robin: at the heart of everything as usual and on the score sheet again. 8.5

Gervinho: a proper footballer with much to give this season. He has tricks and natural flair to go round backlines that want to sit deep. 8

Theo: his pace is always a threat as is his finishing. He’s a bit wasteful in the final third and can go missing sometimes. 7

Gotze on the radar again | Arsene suggests a good November sees us back in the race

November 5, 2011

Happy Saturday morning, I hope you’re all in fine fettle and ready for a day of exciting football at the Grove. Arsene Wenger and the content creators at Arsenal.com have treated us to 482 articles this morning, so we should have some stuff to talk about!

Firstly, congratulations to Robin Van Persie for winning the player of the month award. He scored 49 goals last month so it’s fair to say he deserved it as one of the stand out players in Europe over the past 30 odd days. He’s in no mood to celebrate though, his focus is on beating West Brom today, mindful of the shameful defeat they inflicted on us last year.

“We lost to West Brom here last season and we must admit that we switched off that day. We can not accept that though, so we must not allow it to happen this time. We must learn big-time from that experience.”

Right on Robin. I like the steely assurance he gives you that the boys are going to be 100% focused on turning in a performance. We might not get served up a footballing treat, but this year, I’d go as far as saying I prefer the lower level of entertainment combined with hardwork over the brilliance dashed with savage disappointment of last year. Victory means more under Robin. My only wish is that some of the other boys step up their responsibility levels today and shoulder some of the creative burden.

Wenger had a lot to say, like the rest of us, he’s far more inclined to chat at the water cooler when he’s smashing targets. He does come out with some corkers though!

‘It was tough because we didn’t win games but it was enjoyable because you could feel the core strength of the team was very positive.’

Now, I’m not sure which team he was training, but everything I was told during the collapse pointed to a team on its arse for positivity and spirit. In fact, looking at the comment, I can hardly decipher it, so I’ll move on. The coach gave us a bit of rare insight into how he sees the game tactically,

‘For me, having a full-back who creates is an important part of winning. Take the Brazilian national team, the ones who have won trophies anyway, you will see that there is always two good full-backs. With two average full-backs they would not have won. But they had Carlos Alberto and Roberto Carlos, Jorginho and Cafu.’

“Against a 4-5-1, the trend now, the two centre-backs become more important as the full-backs are ‘blocks’ and the centre-backs get more of the ball.

“So the quality of their passing becomes very important.”

I don’t think anyone minds having fullback that create, I think the issue comes in having a full back that leaves you exposed time and time again. I like Santos going forward, he’s so good he could play left midfield and we’d all be pleased. However, I’d imagine we’d have the same gripes as we do with Andrey… ‘he gives the full back no cover!’

Today I’m hoping he’ll be given more space as you’d struggle to think WBA have the quality to exploit his poor positioning. He still has to be careful and he still has to improve. Our problem is mostly in defence. We’re on to concede 79 in the league if form is anything to go by… that issue needs to be addressed. This hasn’t been lost on Wenger…

‘You have to accept the numbers. When you concede goals you have to accept that you have defensive problems and that is the same for every club. ‘

We need to use what looks like a favourable November as a springboard for our defence to gel and grow in confidence. Two things need to happen. 1) We can’t afford anymore injuries. A settled backline has been something we’ve struggled with all season. 2) The boys need to play as a unit. Our centre backs have been ok as partnerships, but the full backs, whichever combo, have been a real problem. If the back 4 can play as a unit, I’ll be far more positive going into December.

The issue of complacency was raised by the boss and it’s certainly a problem we’ve faced in seasons past. I think the difference this year is the extra experience we have in the squad, Arteta, Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Robin and Gervinho add that extra bit of experience to the younger generation. Robin seems more focused than ever and Thomas is a great communicator and a leader by example. Hopefully that’ll give us an edge today.

Someone raised the prospect of us being title contenders, that was tempered by some reality from Wenger. I don’t think we should be looking at the Championship at all this season. The less pressure we can put on ourselves the better. We’re massive underdogs for everything, lets just watch what happens around us and wait for the inevitable dip in form Spurs, City and Newcastle will face. United fans have been telling me things aren’t looking great with their team at the moment and we know Chelsea are suffering. It’s all to play for, but I don’t think winning titles is for us this year.

One slightly disappointing comment was that Wenger thinks he has enough strikers at the moment. If we’re in a good position come late December, he shouldnt’ take that as a green light that we’ll be good enough for the run in. We’ve been slapped by the ‘our squad isn’t deep enough’ stick almost every year for the last 5 after February.

If we’re in a good position in January, he should solidify the squad with a couple of signings that could be the difference between 5th and 4th. The signing of Arshavin did the job a few years ago, perhaps the signing of Anelka in 2008 or Phill Jones last year could have made the difference. We are in desperate need of a striker who can compete with Robin and I’m sorry, moving Theo and Gervinho into the middle shouldn’t be an option if they’re first team widemen.

Team Line Up

Chezzer

Jenkinson Mertesacker Vermaelen Santos

Arteta Song Ramsey

Gervinho Robin Theo

I’d imagine that’s how we’ll line up. What would be nice is if we could go 3 up by half time and take Robin off for a rest. I’m sure that won’t be the case. We just have to be intent on keeping things solid at the back and making sure the front 3 are fed dangerous passes at a faster pace than we have been. It didn’t really click against Marseille. We can’t afford another impotent game like that. Hopefully it’ll be a fun day for the home fans, I’ll be up there later, enjoy the game and make sure you follow the company twitter feed as I’ll be giving you all the goss live… until my battery dies!

Just before I go, according to the Daily Mail… we’re scouting Mario Gotze again… that would be an amazing signing for us. Hopefully it’s true because he really is the full package. Trouble is, there are about 8 players we could potentially be looking at, Kagawa, Sven Bender, the two centre backs… the list goes on! Alternatively, we could just be scouting Dortmund because we’re playing them soon?

Have a great day!

American Torres on trial at Arsenal | Spanish Messi looking to move | Polish/German winger a maybe?

November 4, 2011

Gooooood morning sports fans, it Friday and lucky for you there is plenty to power through this morning!

First up, Theo is going to have a chat wig is about extending that pesky contract that’s been running itself down in the background. We’re looking to take him from £60k to £80k and extend him out to 2015.

Now, I’m not an expert in being a greedy footballer but that deal wouldn’t float my boat if I knew after this summer I could be the darling of the English media. Now, I’d love him to stay on that deal, and maybe he will, but I’d imagine the old English premium will bite somewhere. I also think he’d be daft if he signed before the Euros from a pure greed business perspective.

Contract rebels follow a similar pattern. They say they’ll talk, they hear the offer, dither purposefully until Christmas, then talks get shelved because the player is too busy in his 6 hour week to think about whether £80k works for his budget, summer comes, you’re away in Ukraine, away from the home support… Bang, King Kenny has clubbed together with all of the Greek, Spanish and Italian banks and has landed bazillion quid contract on the table you just cannot refuse.

One player all the papers seem to have forgotten in this mess is Alex Song. I’ve heard from one or two sources that he has little intention of signing on and that’s from people away from the club. From some of the rumblings I’ve heard about him, I’m not sure that’d be the worst situation. We need committed players.

Anyway, like all these things, all it takes is an injury in January and they sign onto us! Here’s hoping!

On the transfer front, the most exciting story was that Chamakh might be shown the door in January. I just hope he’s facing the right way at the time, watching him trying to back into a door would be embarrassing. Everton and Sevilla are interested. If we can get £10mill for him, we’d be very, very fortunate.

The Sun has us linked to Podolski. I love the Germans and I love the Polish. Lukas is both. He can fix your boiler and build you a car to exquisite standards. He’s been a top international for a few years, things never clicked at Bayern but he’s shown some solid form at his new club. He has pace to burn and more importantly he’s incredibly direct on the ball. Could be a good signing.

We’re also looking at another La Masia talent who is looking for first team assurances ahead of Messi and Pedro. Ambitious eh? He goes by the name of Gerard Deulofeu. I’m wholly against his signing already. Spelling that name half cut in a match report could be disastrous. Talent wise though, he looks pretty sharp.

I guess Barca suffer the same problems we do on a much grander scale. If you keep churning out incredible talent, there comes a point where it starts causing problems. You can’t keep them all, unless you’re very, very greedy. What Barca do now to offset the pain of shipping out potential is build buy back clauses into their contracts. So effectively when you buy one of their kids, you’re just leasing Barca DNA.

Chelsea bought Romelu for £4mill and every year he stays there his buy back cost rises £5mill. Krkic also has a similar deal in place at Roma. The long term hope for the Spanish club is that they own buy back clauses on every player in Europe, then they can take over the world.

Word also reached me from America that winger Brek Shea (how does a name like that happen?) is over for A trial with us. According to the guys at A football report, he’s an electric winger and comes on the recommendation of ex-scum star Jurgen Klinsmann. Some would call that an act of betrayal. Poor Spurs fans.

Anyway, he looks powerful with a questionable haircut. I hope this works out better than Chamakh! They’re calling him the American Torres because he’s blonde and looks like him. He looks handy to me though, American have done well in Europe so I’d welcome him at the club.

Ahead of tomorrow, the injury news is good. Vermaelen still isn’t injured which gives Arsene a selection headache. I think he’ll go for Mert and Verm again as for me, they’re the strongest pairing. Wenger said, ‘balance is vital’, and that’s exactly right. Geoff said last season that Koz and Vermaelen are a little too similar to work well together. I agree with this and I think that’s why we’ll see the same pairing again this weekend.

The coach took time out to say the following…

‘”People wanted us to buy a centre-back so much and then suddenly you realise we have plenty.”‘

Yes Arsene, we called for a centre back, you didn’t sign one, then you got hammered 8-2 by United, then you bought one. Very clever…

We have 3 solid centre backs at the moment, I’d still look for another as JD and Squillaci haven’t impressed for a long time. Still, we can hopefully rely on the fitness of the current 3 (We’ve still got Vermaelen for another 47 games straight).

Business as usual against West Brom. Underestimate any team at your peril these days, so let’s keep it clinical and hope Spurs drop more points after losing yesterday.

Onwards and upwards! See you in the comments, it’s joke Friday!

P.S. We’re wearing Poppy Shirts at the weekend, take pockets full of change to the game and make sure you donate to the Royal British Legion in your droves. They’ll have collectors all over the place I’d imagine. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could buy an Arsenal shirt with a Poppy Logo sewn in?

The cult of Santos | Rambo to the Olympics! | Eden Hazard to Arsenal? | Andrey Average!

November 3, 2011

Morning Grovers, we have plenty of defensive talk to plough through this morning, so lets dive straight in!

Cult hero…

I crowd sourced a bit of content yesterday, someone raised a great point. Has Andre Santos achieved cult status already? I mean, it doesn’t seem to matter how woeful he is on the pitch, people wade in to tell me I’m wrong and he’s great.

This type of irrational behaviour has all the hallmarks of Eboue.

So what makes us love him so much? I say us, because I must confess, I too like the guy. Is it his casual Brazilian swagger? Is it his ability to bomb forward and create? Is it the fact he has a Twitter account and he shares pictures of his suped up Smart car? I’m not sure… I just hope he becomes a cult hero for the right reasons.

He no doubt has qualities, he’s just struggling with the boring stuff, you know, like defending and running. Our backline really isn’t in a state to be dealing with that type of nonsense, so we need him to pick his game up sharpish.

Still, it’s early doors…

Loveless…

On the flip side, everyone seems doubly keen to jump on Mertesacker for being a bad player. Now this I’m struggling with. I’ve in the main been impressed with how he’s adapted to the pace and physicality of the game. I think he gives the team a calmness that wasn’t there last year and he’s a very good reader of the game. I think we have a great buy there.

A player who does appear to be gaining plenty of fan love is Koscielny. He’s changing opinions fast with his no-nonsense performances and his strong work ethic. He has all the ingredients to be a top player, he just needs to cut the mistakes out of his game.

I feel I’m in the best form of my life. I’ve improved a lot. I keep working on the basics, my controls and my passes.

I’m also more rigorous. I make less fouls and get less booked as I needed time to adapt to England. I also cope better with the pressure of playing in a very big club.

And I know I can improve even more. Chelsea was one of the best performances of my career, along with the win against Barcelona at home last season.

I might as well make it a clean sweep with the defence, Thomas Vermaelen said,

‘What can I say about it? It does not worry me at all. I am on the pitch to do my best. I am confident and don’t care what people say’

Thomas, it should worry you if your defence concedes loads of goals. However, as you didn’t concede any in the week, I’ll let that comment slide.

Hazardous…

In other news Gervinho has been talking about the qualities of Eden Hazard, a player who has been hot on the lips of the Grovers for 3 years now. He’s looking to leave Lille and we’re rumoured to be interested.

‘Hazard is a young player with enormous quality. He has everything it takes to triumph in England.

‘Eden has learned a lot at Lille, and I believe he could succeed abroad’

Firstly, someone should tell Gervinho that Hazard has already succeeded abroad, being Belgian and all. I think Hazard is a great player who already knows how to win trophies, with Theo likely to depart next summer, he could be top replacement signing. I’m just not sure that’ll happen. We have Ryo and Oxo coming through, so it wouldn’t make Wenger sense to spend £30mill plus.

Talking of Gervinho, I do love his flagrant disregard for Wenger’s ban on shooting. I thought the below quote merited a place in the dressing room.

You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. ~ Wayne Gretz

I’d send it to Stan, but as Billy Beane didn’t say it i’m unsure he’d like it.

It’s a good point though. How many times have we been undone at Spurs alone with pot shots from outside the box? It would be nice if some of the
midfield would have a go every now and then. It creates space if teams know they have to press you outside the box. I’m not sure teams worry about us shooting at the moment.

Olympics…

Aaron Ramsey says he’s going to the Olympics if he’s picked. Now, that works for me because he’s Welsh and the likelihood of him ever making a major championships are very slim and who wouldn’t want to play in a once in a generation (unless you’re American) home soil Olympics?

My concern would be if Jack was picked. He can’t play two summer tournaments. His current injury is almost a blessing, because a broken bone is not a ruptured Achilles, something that could well have happened had he been run into the ground again this season. He’s had a rest, he’ll be flying from January. That’s great news for our 4th place title aspirations.

Commercials…

In other news, there are a couple of articles I’d like to draw your attention to, one is about Arsenal and their social media plans over the next few years (Football&Socialmedia) and the other is something I wrote about what Manchester United (The Wall blog) creating their own platform for fans.

It’s apparent that as football fans,we’re all hooked when it comes to blogging, Twitter and Facebook. How clubs take on the challenge of social will have a big impact on future commercials. Obviously, the best way to widen your reach is to win a few trophies, but as reported last week, we’re already seeing massive benefits from our tour of Asia. Hopefully that’s started the ball rolling and will give us a larger chunk of the Asian Pie (do they eat pies in Asia?).

Average…

Andrey Arshavin has been doing his best to take apart any argument I had about him being more than a luxury player. He stated,

‘Speaking honestly, I think my performances for Arsenal have been average…I’ve done some good things, but I don’t assess my game on goals or assists. I look at the whole picture.’

Oh, ok Andrey, so you’re saying I don’t see the bigger picture are you? I thought contributing 18 assists and 12 goals last year was pretty good. I know he can appear lazy, but having a player with that flash of magic to change a game is always important. He did redeem himself with this.

‘Ideally, I’d like to play closer to a forward’

Well, I wouldn’t mind seeing that. However, if he can’t motivate himself to work hard, he’s not going to get that opportunity.

Pathetic…

Finally, it looks like Capello is going to pick John Terry for the upcoming friendlies. That’s odd, what with Italians having such a fine and upstanding record when it comes to racism. What does JT have to do to get dropped? That’ll be a shameful blot on our country and once again show that if you’re an ok English footballer, discipline matters not a jot.

Disappointing in the extreme, but not surprising.

Right, see you in the comments!
