Arsenal win their first ESPN Classic in years as they smash Chelsea! Ratings and Review

HIGHLIGHTS

Well, plenty of us had a good feeling about the game yesterday and we were duly rewarded in football heaven with a game that will go down in Premiership history as one of the best. For once though, we were not at the upsetting end of a classic. No, we were the team that came out victorious. The game was so ridiculous, if an American Film production company had scripted it as the championship game of the season, you’d have said it was unrealistic!

We started off incredibly shaky at the back, Djourou lost his bearings after about 2 minutes and allowed Ashley Cole to slip in behind him, the mobile full back cut a perfect cross across goal but Fernando Torres could only fire wide of the post. A pretty miserable miss even if it was early on.

Down the other end Robin Van Persie managed to work his way into the box, his cut back into the penalty area wasn’t met by anyone which was quite frustrating. Sometimes our players seem to have their sense of goal poaching smell switched off at vital moments.

We were under the most pressure, mainly because our full backs were having absolutely appalling games. The pace of Sturridge and Cole bamboozling the them time and time again.

Our first clear cut attempt on goal came when Theo managed to out pace Cole, he engined to the edge of the area and slipped the ball across goal to Gervinho who somehow conspired to turn the ball wide of the post in an attempt that could be classed as technically retarded.

The opener to the game came from a full back mistake. Santos dived in on Mata, who side stepped, created some space, whipped a cross in that evaded the falling Mertesacker, Frank Lampard put his diving header into the bottom corner.

Sturridge nearly made it two when he slipped into our box but sliced his shot just wide of the post.

We equalised on 35 minutes when Santos passed to Ramsey, the Welshman turned, fed Gervinho through the middle, the Ivorian cut to the side of Cech and Robin passed into the empty net! A goal the stank of the Arsenal of old.

Things almost turned to Chelsea’s advantage moments later down the other end when Sturridge turned in a cross that was fractionally offside. The worry for most Arsenal fans is that there was still a whole other half of full back exploitation to be had. Who knew that the Englishman was quite so polished these days?

Just before half time, calamity struck again. Chelsea won a corner, Lampard fired it into the middle of the box, Chelsea’s movement confused everyone and Mertesacker saw Terry’s run too late, he threw himself at the ball like a body guard throws himself at an assailants bullet, it looked like he made connection and it crept inside the far post. Yep, the far post Arteta was supposed to be standing on. Sunday league stuff, front post, back post… jeez.

The second half was going to be massive. We’d looked pretty sharp going forward, Robin, Theo and Gervinho were having a good game. The question was, could we stop ourselves leaking more goals and could we become more clinical?

Well, it didn’t take long to find out. Our full backs combined for the greater good, JD jinked inside from the right, he passed to Songinho who found Santos gallivanting outwide, the Brazilian breezed into the box and fired under the legs of Petr Cech. A surprisingly cool finish for a player having a weak game.

The team had come out fighting, we were controlling possession and looking far more threatening. What had Arsene said at half time?

Theo took the ball from outwide, cut inside, fell over, worked his way out of the pack, powered into the box and belted his shot inside Cech’s post! What a great goal! We were winning!

There was a good shout for a Gervinho penalty on 69 minutes when Ivanovic bundled him over just inside the box, it would have been a harsh penalty, but we were looking for more goals, a lead is never safe with us!

Sure enough we were right, Santos turned villain when his lazy pass was intercepted by a the footballing visual crime Meireles, he cut Mata in who took no time in firing off an absolute screamer past Chezzer. A ridiculous goal from a fantastic talent you felt should be wearing an Arsenal shirt.

No time for moping, we had a game to win. We’re incapable as a side of sitting on a 3-3 draw and praying for full time.

Our chance came when Malouda played pass an awkward pass to John Terry, he turned back to retrieve it falling over in the process, Robin sniffed out an opportunity, sprinted into the box, shimmied round the keeper and slotted into an empty net for our 4th! At that point I went so ballistic at the pub, I was told to calm down by my friends as a few Chelsea fans were looking less than enamoured with my well constructed JT opinions.

John Terry finally shows some respect to a foreigner…

Marvellous. Fitting. Deserved.

Things weren’t over though, this was either going to be a 4-4 like Newcastle or for once, we were going to make this an Arsenal Classic our kids and Grandkids could watch and talk about!

Rosicky helped forge a counter attack on 91 minutes, he passed to Arteta who held off, released Robin who powered a shot in brute force fashion for the 5th! What an amazing bit of attacking football to finish the game! Chelsea were buried, Arsenal were elated and the 3 points belonged to us.

The celebrations at the end of the match once again summed up the captaincy of Robin Van Persie. He’s injected passion into a passionless team. That’s such a massive difference this season. The players are a reflection of their captain, Cesc Fabregas wasn’t a leader. Robin clearly is, so full credit to him for an inspired performance and delivering yet again!

Conclusion

It’s tough to be anything other than over the top about a victory like that, away from home against the back drop of a truly dismal season so far. We’ve carved out a solid set of results recently and we’ve been quietly building our confidence. Today could have been dead and buried within the first 25 minutes.

We weathered the storm, built on our solid attacking play and out fought Chelsea with an inspired second half performance. Wenger sent the boys out with plenty to think about and they must have absorbed every word of it. That was one of the best games of the last 5 years for me. Beating Barcelona at home doesn’t quite hold the same weight as beating a team of Chelsea’s quality away and scoring 5 goals in the process. Wenger’s 500th win apparently? Superb stuff.

There were some gripes, I thought our full backs were pretty awful all game. Santos needs to up his fitness moving forward, he looked the weak link and for a Brazilian international, that’s not a good sign. His attacking play was ok, but pacey wingers are a regular fixture in the Premier League. JD was suspect, but he has the excuse of not being a right back by trade.

Mertesacker made some pretty costly mistakes as well. His problem is that if a player doesn’t do what he anticipates, he doesn’t have the mobility to react. Two of the goals today sat with him as the part of the problem.

Going forward we were inspired. Theo Walcott had a superb game, he was productive, he used his pace properly and his passes in the final third were well thought out. I also though Arteta had an industrious game in the middle. He really helped dictate play in the second half.

That leaves us 3 points off Chelsea and level with Spurs, though they have 2 games in hand. We’re back in the mix again, this year is going to be much like last in my opinion, every team is capable of losing 3 on the bounce because the league is so competitive at the moment. We’re still chasing down 4th as our trophy, what today told us is that on our day, we can still mix it with the best. It also showed great team spirit and that never say die attitude… something I’m not sure we had too much of last season. I guess that comes with experience eh?!

Onwards and upwards! Savour this day Grovers, gloat and get your smug on… Monday is going to be beautiful!

Ratings:

Chezzer: Conceded three but none were down to him. He did really well to command his box and dominate long balls in. 7.5

JD: A real mixed bag for the Swiss. He made some poor mistakes and he was continuously caught out of position in the 1st half. He improved with the game though. 5

Santos: A very weak defensive display, costing us two goals because of basic errors. Made up for it with a goal, but he seriously has to do better. 4.5

Mertesacker: Some clumsy defending combined to cost us. For me, he’s a good player, he’s just prone to lapses. He’s still finding his way into the game, but from what I’ve been told, he’s an absolute asset at the training ground. A class professional. 6

Kosicielny: I can’t really find too many faults with his performance today, he did everything pretty well. 7

Song: A strong performance and a great assist for the Santos goal. Held his position well and didn’t get bullied. 7.5

Arteta: Growing with the team and hardworking. His passing is improving and he’s starting to carve out a role in the team. 7.5

Ramsey: Covered loads of ground, landed an assist and made a general nuisance of himself all afternoon. 7.5

Theo: Used his pace and passing to great effect yesterday. He looked inspired, something he hasn’t done for weeks. Took his goal fantastically well. Top effort from a dangerous forward. 8

Gervinho: Guilty of a horrendous miss early on but didn’t let it affect him, went on to have a great game. 7.5

Robin: Man of the match performance from the man of the moment. Scored 3 superb goals, led us like a warrior and took the 3 points home for us! 10

When did I say they “werent that great”?

However I do remember specifically debating this exact point with someone, who was convinced it was a better achievement than Utds treble or double winning teams, which I said it wasnt……we were just a team that won the PL with 90pts, nothing out of the ordinary.

As I say Huddersfield have shown that going unbeaten doesnt make you amazing.

They are unbeaten in 41, yet didnt even go up last season, and are currently 2nd.

As I said, proving me right.

Well Capello was at the game yesterday so at least that explains Theo’s performance.”

Maybe we should fill the empty seats in the Emirates with blow-up Capello dolls?

Kos was outstanding. So too Ramsey, Song, Arteta.

    Good team performance.

And Santos is excellent when goal-side of his opponent, at both ends of the pitch, efficiently dispossesses on-coming attackers and dangerous in attack. Needs help with speedsters like Sturridge tho.

  5. wtf wanker

whatever you say we have better mental strenght now…this team has come back these past games and won …these players have this winning attitude!!the likes of ramsey, song n arteta know how to get a result done!!! and we are lucky that rvp is on fire!!!

  6. itchyballs

“KOZZER” was the dogs bollocks yesterday-proved his worth,no question-seems to have turned the corner & growing in stature with each game-by the end of this season we will know for sure if we have a diamond on our hands or not…

  7. Cloggs

Ok, I’m sober again… ppfff.. fucking great win..two packets of ciggies, 20 beers and no nails left to scratch my balls while having a shit. JT’s face after Rvp’s second, hahahahaha priceless!!!! gonna celebrate the whole week..this is so nice.. Chelski’s defence appeared to be as shit as ours … and I suspect Torres can’t even make his girlie preggers..whaha! then again… defence remains a worry, more or less same old problems, Santos stepping in etc.. JD?? and mind you.. if RvP or Chezzers pick up an injury we’re fucked.

  8. Keyser

I think our easy run is offset against some of those teams having a rest mid-week and us having to play all these must-win games every 3-4 days, we must be close to needing a rest soon and it’s no wonder we struggle in Novemeber.

Like if we win against Marseille depending on the other group games we could top the group and qualify mid-week, we struggle after mid-week Champions League games though.

Arshavin, Rosicky, Benayoun will hopefully help with that.

  9. ManBearPig

Wow, absolutely stunned by the number of ‘glass half empty’ fans…
We all know what our issues are, however our lads stood toe to toe with Chelski & beat them at the bridge… Passion, heart, desire, mental fortitude were all on display… If there was ever a time to stop and savor a victory, this is it…
It’s gonna be a long season & plenty of opportunities for critique & comments from the peanut gallery… Let’s just bask in the glory for a little while longer….

After yesterday’s game, we need to keep on training hard and improving…the season has just started! Congrats to Arsenal

Find the infighting today a compete waste of a victory over those mugs.
Second game in a row when Ramsay has produced a ‘cesc’ like moment to set up a goal. Think we will stop the need to compare them and just enjoy watching him evolve into a great player in his own right.
He and Arteta starting to gel.
Loved Theo’s goal, particularly because he stuffed the unloved one

Watched the game again. Awful defending(we recovered 2nd half).

ONE OF THE BEST MATCHES EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  13. Byo

I take the pleasure in reading comments here, and rarely comment.

The negative comments here are always very predictable:they are great managers on the keyboard; they never give the team any credit; the team conceded 3 goals(they forget that Chelsea did 5!); they always clamor for $20M signings(I guess like Carroll, Torres, Downing,Cleverly,Henderson etc); every player on the team is shite; Wenger is past it; etc, etc.
Sometimes you have to wonder if their comments is a reflection of their pessimistic/negative lives. Must they always see the negatives in life!
The team has been written off 9 games into the season. Clean sheets? Arsenal1-0 Udinese; Arsenal1-0 Marseille; Arsenal 3-0 Bolton. I guess those don’t count.
For a 3-decade Arsenal fan, I have seen the ups and downs. I have never had on tinted lenses. I know the short-comings of the team. But I also know that every team has them.

At least give the team some credit on a great win! Gah.

  14. Goon from BD

How did RvP turn into such a great goal scorer? Before he used be a scorer of great goals. Its such a shame that he never fulfilled his potential due to injuries.

  15. DaleDaGooner

Quietly, Koscielny is becoming the better defender in the bunch, shhhh Anyone surprised FernanDon’tScorez was kept quiet all through by the KOS??

  16. Goon from BD

My classic moments were of course

*JT bowing down to Captain Vantastic

,*Ivanovic’ falling over after realizing he had angered the mighty Dutchman

    *Theo’s comedy goal.

*Koscienly pushing Torres and kicking the ball straight to his face to win a throw in.

*The players celebrating with the fans

    Awesome stuff

  17. Goon from BD

Dale- regarding El Nino…..a comment from a Chel$ki fan on the Guardian blog,,,,,,,,

“For months now i have followed enthralled the debate amongst some of the most informed and foresighted bloggers on the planet regarding Fernando Torres, and why things just don’t seem to be working out for him after his move to Chelsea.

Some of the theories advanced have been of Nobel standard, obviously drawing upon years of watching the game at the very highest levels, deep tactical understanding, psychological analysis, keen knowledge of landscape gardening and an intimate grasp of Pythagoras’s theorem.

Watching the game this afternoon, however, it dawned on me exactly what the problem is!

As is so often the case in such situations, the answer is ridiculously easy………..

    He’s shite.”

  18. paul mc daid

Yesterdays celebrations were brillant, finally the players are buying into our pride, well done Robin and the team,a legendary moment.

  19. DaleDaGooner

So no more dissing Chamakh! FernanDon’tScoreus, Carrol were bought for large sums, every team has a waste of space, but i’d rather get one on the cheap.

  20. Paul King

The filthy cunting Mancs treble doesn’t come close to a complete season unbeaten unless you’re a filthy cunting Manc. B. Munich smashed the cunts to pieces in the CL Final….We had the cunts dead and buried in the FA Cup semi final and the filth from the lane rolled over like cunts after taking the lead in the last league game. The filthy Mancs 07/08 side were much better than the 1999 lottery winners!

  21. Lurch LeRouge

dunno their goals are being shared and their gelling pretty well, I doubt they’ll lose any of their next 5.

they need an injury or two.

  22. Paul King

The Spuds will fuck up….they always do…Arry’ twitched his way to an FA Cup once…just fuckin’ once! Half a century…Five decades…50 fuckin’ years without a title challenge…not even a raised pulse!

  23. Rohan

Absolutely ecstatic with the vin. Still buzzing. The midfield 3 of arteta ramsey and song was great.song had one of those days where his passing was like that if cescs and arteta heroically held the fort down in the second half. His experience shows through. Ramsey looks like he has the mojo back again.
Cant speak highly enough of van persie. It is clear he has the utmost rsspect of everyone in the squad. Inspiring stuff. His celebration gave me chills.

Gervinho is absolutely fantastic at getting into dangerous lositions. If he could develop a finish on him we would have some player. Theo made cole look like poo.great stuff.

Finally a word for koscielny.immense. Abaolutely immense. He will go on yo be an arsenal legend. Keon would be proud.

And gambon. Pipe down will ya. Ive lost what little respect i had for you today. Its like how you came on in the wee hours after the barcelona win and said that the team showed an inferiority complex after celebrating as they did.

  24. gambon

Interesting that 3 strikers that were all available in the summer and wenger ignored are all playing very well into this season.

Cisse, Gameiro & Falcao have scored 21 league goals between them.

Chamakh & Park combined have 1 goal.

Oh well, I guess Wenger knows, after all we did beat Chelsea yesterday, that has single handedly made him the best manager in the world.

  25. kapslock

Holy shit. What. A. Fucking. Game. I’m absolutely hanging today but I don’t care as I witnessed one of the best games ever yesterday. Unbelievable and you have to give the hugest amount of props to the players and manager for turning it around. Yes, we were suspect at the back but we fought hard and deservedly won. There’s nothing sweeter then seeing Terry on his ass and gifting us the victory. Haha what a cunt! I thought Ramsey in particular had an outstanding game as did Theo.

I’ve been one of the first to criticise Theo and Koscielny but I thought both played really well yesterday. Theo’s goal was exceptional. Hansen was talking about bad defending but if that had been Messi it would have just been ‘genuine class.’ Not that I’m comparing Theo to Messi. Very happy I just hope we continue this form as we don’t have too tough a fixtures coming up. COYG!!!

  26. kwik fit

I still think that Llorente would be the perfect foil for RVP and replacement for Chamakh

RVP Llorente Park and Afobe Not a bad front line

  27. gambon

We could easily get £15m for Bendtner, Chamakh & Vela, which would allow us to spend significantly on a striker.

God we have so much wastage at the club….players like Bendtner & Vela out on loan when we shouldve sold them to make £££.

  28. Byo

Cisse was a flop in England years past, Gameiro and Falcao are good(I would want Falcao too). But do we know if their clubs put them up for sale? Or that AW did not try? Do we know what happened with the Mata bid?
The truth is it is rather easy to be a manager with the keyboard. I am not sure anyone here knows the ins of transactions. This is really tiring.

  29. gambon

    Haha, different Cisse.

gameira, up for sale??? Well he moved so i guess so.

    Falcao???? Likewise.

That whole post was pretty awful.

  30. gambon

Thats a big call Gooby, bearing in mind theres only 2 months left in the year.

Spurs are 3 points ahead of us, with a GIH, and they look better than us.

  31. Ashburton Patriot

Lol yesterday was hilarious… got roasted on ACLF
apparently im not allowed to celebr8 arsenal’s win cos i have doubts about wenger… diluded.

i see Gambon’s having some fun today.

I think the rest of the team have more respect for the captain this year. My god we better buy another striker in Jan!

It was Rambo that skipped into the box early on an cut back to no one, despite the sky commentators frequently saying it was RVP

  38. bade the gooner (bernard)

People shouldn’t be losing any contact to reality because of 1 fabulous win…

It’s still a win, we need much more to claim 4th, when the arsenal shouldn’t aiming so low

Ill be happy if we get 4th, but don’t fool yourselves we’re still far off. A Robin mid season rest and we’re fucked again with Zero chance

For me Arsene still needs to go, don’t get it wrong….

  39. Gooby

    SUGA3

    they are just miserable cunts

ramsey is going to be such a good player. It makes me laugh that liverpool bought henderson who’s not all that when we have ramsey not to mention shelvey

  40. Gooby

would be nice to have goetze but let’s see how ramsey does this season.

having coquelin and frimpong makes me think twice about m’villa although i like him a lot

  41. Keyser

My brother was saying that, I thought he was taking the piss out of John Terry, or he was doing that dust off my shoulder thing and got carried away.

  42. Josip Skoblar

    Gooby
M’vila is a totally different type of player. He’d bring steel and technique in midfield. I’d make him my no1 target in Jan or in the summer.

  43. Gooby

    josip

i know m’villa, i am the first person who mentioned him on LG. He’s very similar to coquelin and frimipong simply because they share the same position. coquelin is very similar to m’villa on many levels, excpet m’villa is more experienced and already an international

  44. gambon

    Gooby

Gotze, Wilshere, Arteta & Ramsey could fight for 2 spots, the depth would be good.

Mvilla & Song fight for the other spot……with Coquelin & Frimpong as back ups, and maybe Frimpong on loan as he has a lot to do.

    IMO we need…

    - Backup GK for Szczesny (I worry whenever I see Fabianski plus he has said he will leave if he is second choice)
    - Backup RB
    - Top class CB
    - Top class DM
    - Playmaker
    - Wide player
    - Top class striker (RVP back up)

So 7 players to put us right up there.

I would sell Almunia, Fabianski, Djourou, Squillaci, Denilson, Diaby, Rosicky, Bendtner, Vela, Chamakh, Lansbury & the disaster that is Wellington.

  45. Keyser

How quick and mobile is M’Villa, all we need really is a quicker more agile Song. An experienced more dominant version of Coquelin.

  46. goonermart

Agree 100% with the in’s and out’s gambon, pitty it hasn’t been done over the last three season’s. We will be lucky to get one of those in January and in my view it needs to be the striker.

  47. gambon

I wouldnt call MVilla rapid but he is definitely much more of an athlete than Song.

Importantly he is strong enough technically to play alongside a DM. Very good passer of the ball.

  48. Gooby

    gambon

    imo that’s too much.

we need at most, in that order:

    - RB backup
    - striker to replace chamakh
    - playmaker or a wide player

    - almunia doesn’t count,
    - squillaci has already been replaced+miquel or bartley will come through next year, i am fine with djourou as 4th choice
    - denilson has been replaced too
    - i’d keep rosicky around for a while
    - bendy gone, park is his replacement
    - vela same, ryo is the new LW to replace him
    - lansbury, we’ll see if he can cut it
    - wellington same

signing goetze and m’villa wold make it difficult for ramsey and i think he deserves a chance, he’ll eventually become a regular first team player.

  49. kwik fit

No need wasting good money on M’ville in January cos Le Coq is sheer quality. No we need a top striker cos RVP won’t last the season.

  50. gambon

    Gooby

No bendy isnt gone, vela neither. Theyre gone when we recieve £££ for them.

As for your comment on Ramsey, if hes good enough he’ll make it. We have to stop the culture on entitlement where kids automatically play and get the chance to improve at the expense of the team.

  51. gambon

“No need wasting good money on M’ville in January cos Le Coq is sheer quality”

This is the problem with Arsenal fans.

  52. Keyser

It’s natural progression, Ramsey in the last two games has shown the sort of connection to the front players that he was showing before he got injured, and that’s probably only because he was allowed the game-time before hand.

We can’t afford to stop it we need to regulate and control it.

  53. Gooby

    gambon

bendy and vela are virtually gone.

if ramsey is better than goetze or worked better with our system we would have bought him for nothing and it would be stupid.

  54. gambon

    Gooby

    Thats pathetic logic.

If our under 13′s are better than every player in the world we should never buy another player.

  55. Gooby

there’s no problem in developing young players, it’s an essential part of any professional top level club (at least it should be)

If coquelin was first choice it wouldn’t be accurate to say that we don’t need m’villa but song is doing well at the moment, he’s established at the club, isn’t as bad as some suggest.

  56. jack

I enjoy reading Gambons posts and the reactions to them, its all part of this great blog, even though some of Gambons comments are very offensive. i do however agree with most of his opinions re Arsene, the board and some players and how the deluded fool has lost it. I am still of the belief that Wenger should have been sacked after the 8-2 mauling if not 2 years before that. we are now challenging the spuds and liverpool for 4th instead of shitty and manure for the title and a lot of fans seem happy to accept that. Arsene and the board have done well in lowering our expectations and 4th place is now our goal. Am i happy with that, no fucking way , but will still be glad if we do. I cant accept mediocrity and the lack of ambition form Arsene and the profiteers, so my glass is half full, doomer, negative etc etc etc. I posted yesterday that i was overwhelmed with happiness watching us beating the chavs, because i was living in the moment, watching JT and just couldnt belive it ,or expected it and it was so fucking long since i last felt like that. it was a good performance offensively , but same old defensive shit (except Kos). as someone posted earlier, if RVP gets injured, or our display against blackburn returns we are fucked, the wenger out comments will be back and justifiably so. I am not a villa, everton, spud or sunderland fan where mediocrity is the norm and where Arsene and some fans seem content enough to be , i am an Arsenal fan, and that should say it all. Shouldnt it?

And what happens if Songs injured?

What about if Szczesny or RVP are injured? Or Vermaelen (Well weve seen what happens then).

2 massive problems Arsenal have faced:

    1- No depth
2- Players know they can play badly and get away with it

They are both the same problem.

What happens if Aguero plays badly? hes out of the team.

Utd have Berbatov on the bench, we have Chamakh.

Not to mention that the likes of Gotze & MVila are actually improvements on what we have, while also giving a much higher level of competition.

  58. kwik fit

Arsenal at least ten players between 17-21 who could be top class. A new defensive coach would not go a miss tough.

  59. Gooby

    gambon

of course it’s better to have 3 top class players in every position, if we are capable to sign messi, then why not?

my point is goetze is one year young that ramsey, would he be much of an improvement? moving to another league etc. I don’t think so given the kind of money we would have to pay for him, £50m at least if we’re counting wages. knowing that ramsey might be better in the long term

i’d be more tempted to sign m’villa even with wilshere, song and arteta around he could make his way into the team, he won’t be an automatic pick should he sign in january but i’d take him and send frimpong/coquelin on loan.

I already mentioned we need a striker to replace chamakh in january.

As for your 2- point i think there’s a bit of competition in the team, they don’t get away with bad performances, arshavin has been dropped a few times this season, song coquelin, frimpong and diaby will all fight for a spot. ramsey wilshere arteta, rosicky benayoun are fighting for the other two. we have 3 very good CB, 2 LB, a bit short in RB spot that’s why i think we should sign one.

RvP is pure class he doesn’t need competition, do you still believe torres, rooney and drogba are better than him ?

  60. gambon

RVP doesnt need competition, but he also cant play 50 times a season, and he will get injured.

Rooney is a better all round player, RVP is on better form & a better finisher.

Drogba is 33, Torres – well i dont know what happened to him.

  61. gambon

    HAHA

Gooby, so we shouldnt go for Gotze, but we SHOULD go for 2 of the most unbuyable players on the planet?

    Do you watch football?

  62. Byo

It always amazes me that these experts suddenly want players you never heard of 2 seasons ago-that Papiss Cisse has had a goal-scoring performances in the Germany(like Chamakh did in France), and Gameiro is doing ok does not mean Arsenal has to get them. We know that huge transfer fee does not equal success.

While I will agree that Falcao is class, M’Vila I don’t see as an improvement over Song. I’ll keep Djourou as 4th choice CB. Hulk’s bruising style of play will fit the PL alright, but I have never been much convinced about him against top opposition. Rosicky’s influence in the locker room cannot be overstated. Frimpong may need a season out on loan, I might agree(he lost the season for that due to injury)
The others(some of whom are not here anymore anyhow) on the list I will agree as dead-wood.

But what would 7 new players do to the chemistry of a club?

  63. Gooby

    fucking hell gambon think harder

hypothetically if you want to replace ramsey, would you get a player of the same age from germany who ain’t that much of an improvement as one of them will inevitably warm the bench for a large part of the season and end up leaving or a really top class playmaker who’ll make an actual difference?

why do you believe we can buy goetze in january?

  64. goonermart

Toatally agree jack, it’s ridiculous that some people only post on here to abuse people who dare to criticize wenger. They are normally full of bile and have no valid argument.
Normally something like: ‘you talk shit, fuck off and surpport city then you mug’ very constructive.
There’s no doubt Arsenal could have won a couple of titles over the last six years if wenger wasn’t such a stubborn twat.
Oh but am i allowed to say that today

  65. Gooby

“Do not compare me to [Marouane] Chamakh. I’m going to Arsenal to play and be in the action. I’m not going there to sit on bench.” Gervinho, 2011.

    lol

  66. gambon

    Who is this Byo?

Jesus christ, do you actually know anything about football?

Chamakh had a record of 1 in 4 in France.

Cisse has a record of 1 in 1.6 in Germany

The Bundesliga is tougher than Ligue 1 so thats a serious record.

Like I said, you thought I was talking about Djibril Cisse, you also didnt know that Gameiro & Falcao had moved.

I think youre on the wrong blog.

  67. Gooby

gameiro is actually the top scorer in the french league(8 goals in 12 games). he’s a top striker, miles away from chamakh,

  68. Gooby

pappis cisse has a good goal scoring record

djibril cisse is doing ok at lazio scored 4 11 starts. He had 2 double leg breaks in his career, witch are very bad injuries and recovered well, i rate his determination

  69. gambon

“But what would 7 new players do to the chemistry of a club?”

Dont even know where to begin with this.

Remember what happened right at the end of the window? We signed 5 players……our results have improved dramatically since.

Also, remind me, who are top of the PL and flying?

  70. Goon in 60 Seconds

Gambon we need three players max, I agree one more Cm, A new keeper as back up for Chezz, and maybe a song replacment although we have frimpong and le coq, and Arteta is adopting a more defensive role. Can’t really see a justification in any other position.

  71. incesc

lol the things i do whilst pissed

if sevilla beat bottom placed granada tomorrow i win an nice amount of money on a tiny £6 coupon

got juve, udinese, madrid, arsenal, lyon, parma, athletico and malaga so far

    come on sevilla

  72. incesc

anyway lets talk about aaron ramsey

told you he was good, this lad is our captain after RVP and the future of our club next to wilshere

has anyone noticed how hes our 2nd best player this season after rvp and hes got the personality to move on from his leg break

  73. incesc

we’ve seen playesr not come back from bad breaks too often, but ramsey is already back and 10 times the player he was before

  74. kapslock

Thought Rambo was top, top drawer yesterday. Felt he wasn’t great at the start but he’s slowly finding that form he had before his leg break.

  75. Lurch LeRouge

Ramsey’s interviews are capital zzzz’s, perhaps burdened by national captaincy too young me thinks.

looking forward to deeeeench’s flamingo pink hairdo this week.

  76. Lurch LeRouge

JW will be captain before Rambo, been with the club since a pup, i recon he’s already subtly modelling himself for it.

  77. Keyser

Maybe he’s just crap on camera, he seems to make sure he thinks about what the right thing is to say before he opens his mouth, probably a good thing, he also doesn’t look straight at the camera or even Geoff Shreeves.

Maybe Shreeves is naked from the waist down off camera.

On the pitch he seems to be starting to relish the creative role again, he pushed Rameires about on a free-kick and he wasn’t shy in asking for the ball.

  78. Keyser

Funny how perceptions change depending on the run we’re on, I think Mertesackers experience has helped even if they know he’s not the quickest he can be relied on to take the ball or do the right thing more often than most. Even Arteta, Santos has nowhere near the athleticism of Gibbs or Clichy but he’s clever and savvy.

Van Persies test comes when he’s either injured or he’s on a poor goal scoring run, not sure he’ll be able to push people on around him.

  79. Keyser

Though maybe by then the supporting cast will have built up enough confidence to do some things on their own without him.

  80. Lurch LeRouge

yeah i think its probably a camera thing as well, hence the burden of welsh captaincy comment – he represents his nation with every breath – he’s likely got an internal press secretary demon barricading his weird occultist welsh humour.

coquelin? nah. the reversed cap thing ruined it.

yeah RVP’s defo the best captain since TA, could even be superior in time, with public perception resulting from unfettered press access and a modern PR machine blah blah blah, i guess it’ll depend on what silverware his tenancy yields. But he definitely eschews the winners zeal and if he harbours any vanity or ego he’s doing a brilliant job of suppressing it publicly at the moment.

As for pushing people around him? I like to think TV5 makes a brilliant lieutenant. I’d imagine TV5 does the grunt work while RVP orchestrates the message. With Jack, Ramsey, Arteta, & Mert I don’t think we lack for a winning mentality and hunger in the dressing room and I can’t imagine any immature personalities derailing the common goal either.

  81. Rohan

Lurch, I was very impressed with arteta yesterday and how he held it to together in the second half. Solid solid performance.

Special word for song as well. His performance yesterday has gone a bit unnoticed really.

This team is very very likable and have a solid base upon which to build
