2 Arsenal medicals penned in for today | Honda, Arteta, Cahill, Dempsey, Ribery, on the radar?

August 31, 2011

Yeah… that’s me… a happy Gooner rolling in transfers. What a bloody day eh?! The best day since time began? Or maybe just the best summer in 5 years? Either way, all the right things began to happen yesterday!

Now, there was obviously disappointment yesterday morning when everyone thought I was telling lies about Yann M’Vila, but then later that day, the backpage of the Evening Standard ran the story pretty much word for word and The Times are reporting the same this morning. Now, they’ve either got someone telling them the same things, or they’ve got a penchant for a daily dose of Le Grove. Either outcome is pleasing. Like I said yesterday, watch this space. We could easily spend £60million today and not bat an eye lid.

Simple fact is, Alex Song not the one and he’ll be off next summer. Frimpong is a very good prospect, but he needs guidance. Whichever way you look at it, we need a defensive midfielder today. We’re desperately short in the middle.

Defence…

We landed Per Mertesacker yesterday after he completed a medical. Andre Santos was also doing the same. There were a few articles floating about online that stated he’d changed his mind and flown back to Turkey to sign a 4 year deal. I’d be very surprised if that were the case!

Per Mertesacker was a massive curve ball yesterday, but ultimately a fantastic one. He’s a player we’ve been calling for on Le Grove since before June 2008. We reported that he was a Gooner way back then here, 3 years on, whaddya know, he’s going to be turning out at the home of football!

He’s 6ft6, he’s built powerfully, he has 70+ caps for a very solid German team, he’s won trophies, he has Champions League experience and he knows how to defend. Rumour has it we’ve picked him up for £9million. What a price!

This is the sort of player we should always be in for. He has pedigree, he has presence and he’ll slot in perfectly next to Thomas Vermaelen. We have a genuine little and large combination. We have a defender who has played the highline for club and country and we’ve done something crazy… signed a tall player to deal with our fear of high flying balls!

Sacrebleu! <- Does that mean what I think it does?

I’m very pleased.

Park Chu-Young signed for us officially yesterday. The South Korean captain joins us under a cloud of ‘who the f**k’, but the key point here is versatility and hard word. Mainly hard work though. Arshavin and Rosicky showed at the weekend that they’re not cut out for Arsenal when crunch time comes. We need someone who is going to work for their salary, this guy will. Does he have the required quality? I’m not sure… but if he can bag 12 goals for a relegated Monaco, I’d hope for something similar or better for a team capable of teeing him up with far more chances.

Oh, and he takes the number 9 shirt. You knew that already though, right?

Clint Dempsey…

There are big rumours we’re looking to add the American to our attacking line up. Whilst he’s not world-class, he’s a very good player with a superb eye for goal. He has that aggravation factor and a terrific work rate. You don’t need all your players to be La Masia schooled. Sometimes you just need a player who is direct, in your face and not afraid to ruffle a few feathers. He scored 14 goals for Fulham last year and he was very impressive. I’d welcome him into our squad and word on the South American street is that we’ve tabled a $16.8million bid for him.

Gary Cahill…

Have Bolton burned their bridges in negotiations for a player they’ll lose on a free if they don’t get rid of him today? We’ve signed a centre back already. That puts the pressure on Gartside’s hugely indebted club to do a deal today. I think we’re still in for him. Johann Djourrou has been so bad over the past 6 months, you wonder for his future. Cahill is still a top defender and regardless of how many people tell you he’s rubbish, he’s not, he’d make a great addition to the squad.

I still remember how many people told me Ashley Young wasn’t Arsenal quality… some statement eh?

Chris Samba…

There were a lot of rumblings about the shower bully from Blackburn. I have my doubts. The rumours feel more like stories designed to get him a move away from Steve Kean. He’d be a useful addition, but we’ve already filled the role of ‘massive beast’, if we get another centre back, they’ll be good on the ground and stylish… Like a break dancer.

The creative hole?

There’s a massive hole in our side, that’s the one left by Cesc Fabregas. If there’s going to be a monster signing today, I’d love it to come there. Yossi looks like he’s off to Spurs, so good luck to him, quality player, poor injury record. That leaves us with the prospect of Gotze or Hazard. There will probably be another curve ball thrown there, but I’m struggling to see where it’s coming from. The German might be pulled away from his club for £35million and a massive salary, I’m not sure though, it would be a bad move for Dortmund but I guess it depends on how much they want the cash. They’re not flush!

My money is on Arteta. Like Yossi, top quality, just not so much on the fitness side of things. I’d also be interested in Frank Ribery. He was once a £60million player, then his mates bought him a 17 year old hooker, now he’s not quite as popular. He’d be amazing in the Premiership. He’d replace Nasri perfectly. Could we move for him? I’d love it… who knows! Sky are reporting that Honda is in London for a medical… it’s all too much!

Medical…

I was told that two medicals were booked yesterday, two more for today. Make of that what you will!

Conclusion

It’s a shame it took an absolute spanking to push the board and Arsene Wenger into some serious action. Nearly all of this business could have been conducted in June. I don’t believe all these players have been targets all summer, we’ve just shown intent and made things happen because careers are on the line.

Still, that’s a story for another day.

We’re developing a strong core to the team now. We could make top 4 if we make 2-3 signings of intent again today. Amazing how quickly things can change eh? The squad will be revitalised and fans will be excited for the Swansea game. A morale booster for everyone!

My worry though, is that we’re once again in a transition year. This sort of frenzied 48 hours should never have happened and if we’d made purchases like this 2 years ago, who knows who’d still be here fighting it out in the first team.

Anyway, it’s the last day of transfer rumours. There won’t be a live blog, the comments section will going mental all day, tune in, you can get far more info than 140 characters into a comment and all the stories will come direct to you all day from the Grovers! Life is very exciting!

Transfer Updates

  • Keisuke Honda in for a medical according to Sky Reports

Exclusive: Bad news on top Arsenal target… | Yossi, Santos, Götze & Cahill on radar

August 30, 2011

I’m not going to procrastinate over the United game, I appreciate most of you are suicidal already. I’ll just say one thing… how disappointing is it that I can’t even gloat about the misery going on at White Hart Lane? Very…

Transfer Pipeline…

Yossi Benayoun according to my source is someone we’re definitely interested in. I’m not sure why there was such an outcry about his purchase yesterday. I think he’s well worth a punt. He’s hard-working, Premiership experienced, good with both feet, a great finisher and creative. He’s also 31 years old and obviously, he’s French African, so perfect for Wenger.

I’ve said on numerous occasions he’s Alex Hleb with end product.

The problem here isn’t quality, it’s his injury record and the question marks around an older player returning from an achilles problem.

Yossi Stats…

09-10: 31 games / 8 Goals / 6 Assists

08-09: 24 games / 9 goals / 6 Assists

07-08: 26 games / 10 goals / 5 Assists

Rumours surfaced last night that we were in for Chelsea’s Alex. For me, this is just a ploy to pile the pressure on Bolton. He’s a good player but he’s so injury prone it wouldn’t be worth the risk for such a key position. Cahill is the right age and he’s an improvement on Koscielny. He’d be a great buy. We must be careful though, Spurs are lurking.

News surfaced last night that we were in for Götze of Dortmund. A superb talent, some say the best the German football has to offer, but a non-starter for me. Most top clubs don’t sell to their competitors two days before the window closes because generally you can’t find top class replacements.

The player we were hunting down was Yann M’Vila. Things were looking good and we definitely had the player interested, though I’ve been informed this morning the deal is off as Rennes want £30million and we’re only prepared to go as high as £22million. A bit of a gutter and the reason I didn’t give a name initially. He’s a terrier of a defensive midfielder with the ability to play box to box. He’d be the perfect player to solidify our weak central midfield.

Keep an eye on his name though. French clubs are desperate for cash, that one might be reignited last-minute.

Andre Santos looks like our new left back. He’s a Brazil international, comes with a glowing reference from Sports Illustrated’s Gabrielle Marcotti and has pedigree. The perfect signing. He comes from a match fixing team, but a winning match fixing team! Who cares though, that’s a top deal under the radar.

In other great news, it looks like Chamakh could be on his way out to PSG. The highlight of his Arsenal career would be making any sort of profit on him. Traore left for a fee, that’s a win. He’s not cut out for the big games, if I was to guess, I’d say he’ll bomb at QPR as well.

Looking at our transfer model, it seems we’re shipping out the lazy and replacing them with hard workers which is something we need. How they’ll settle is a worry, but be honest, anything is better than 8-2 players.

Ticket refund…

I had a short conversation on 5 Live yesterday at 1850. I was asked to talk about the refund, here’s what I would have said it I’d been given a bit longer.

Firstly, we didn’t ask for the refund. So it wasn’t demanded. It was a gesture. It’s always nice when you’ve been wronged to be offered before you have to ask. It shows the club take results like that seriously and they’re taking accountability.

United at the weekend was the worst result since 1886. That was no regular defeat. That was a disgrace even at Sunday League level. People are worried it’ll set a dangerous precedent. I say it would set the perfect precedent. Away games should ALWAYS be refunded when we lose by such a humiliating margin.

Buying a ticket is a two-way commitment. We part with our cash and support. The manager puts out team capable of winning and the players work hard and fight like their lives depended on it.

Our supporters kept their part of the bargain, they were world-class, an inspiration to all football fans. They reminded me of the string quartet on the Titanic… The point is, those are the type of fans we should be encouraging. A well deserved gesture. Simple fact is, no amount of free tickets will remove that foul taste… but a free ticket to another game goes someway to helping.

Finally, the stats around the refund…

The average ticket price was about £46. Our allocation was 3000. The total cost of the refund was about £138k. That’s roughly what Arsene Wenger is paid per week.

I’m not drawing any logical conclusions as to where that money should come from. Nor would I point out our weekly wage bill is almost 17 times the refund cost.

Right, plenty for you chew through this morning. Sorry the mystery player looks a dead duck… but like I say with all transfer deals, until they’re done, anything can happen!

There are plenty of twists and turns yet… Wenger has a career, season and a legacy to save! Come on Arsene, show us you know!

P.S. 100,000 of you visited the site on match day this weekend. That might not be a lot for other sites, but my god, that’s feels like something special to Geoff and I. Thanks for continuing to drop by this summer and thanks for telling your friends to drop by as well, you’ve all helped to make the summer so much more bearable with your top comments and banter!

Arsenal seniors were a disgrace | Wenger is a disgrace | The Board and Kroenke are a disgrace

August 28, 2011

I’m not sure you want me to re-hash 8 conceded goals. What’s the point? We knew in May we were average at best when defending. We knew that 43 conceded goals was one of the records of the past 20 years. What we hoped for was progress…

I’ve cut short a bank holiday night to go home. I’m numb. I don’t know how you all feel, but Arsenal isn’t a pass time, it’s an extension of my everyday life. To watch my club disappear into predictable mediocrity is a huge drain, so writing this is horrible… But I’ll try and address the issues as best I can…

The kids…

It’s a disgrace that our squad is 3 games into the season and we’re fielding a debutant, a non-league loanee from last year, a left back who is so bad we’d rather play our right back in his position and our best solution to chase a game is a League One winger with no pedigree.

We’re a club with huge resources available, a manager who is one of the greatest talent spotters on the planet and we sent out a team of beginners to take on last seasons European Cup Finalists.

Speak to any professional worth his salt and they’ll tell you the best time to ring talent into the team is when it’s settled… Not when it’s on its knees. Arsene Wenger’s disregard for this rule is damaging for the players and the clubs prospects.

It’s hard to even pinpoint youth as the main problem here. United had a team with the same average age as us. It’s down to pure quality. We don’t have enough of it. United shared the same average age as us yesterday, but boasted far more experience and talent. I had to sit there with Arsenal fans pre-match debating whether Coquelin was experienced because he’s played half a season with Lorient. Ask yourself this, how many of the players on show yesterday would get in the Everton starting 11? Not many… So why are they starting for us in a crunch tie?

The adults…

The senior squad players were terrible yesterday. As has been the case during most of the past 3-4 years, when the chips are down, our senior players refuse to take responsibility and often let us down. Andrey Arshavin was pathetically bad yesterday. He’s not mentally there anymore. There was one moment in the first half where he had the ball outside their area, he looked up, no one moved for him so he just lashed at the ball. Now to a certain degree, I understand his frustration, he’s in the prime of his career and he’s playing with dross, but on the other hand, he’s old enough to know better and he should be leading by example. He should also be giving the leagues worst left back a bit of a hand every now and then, especially against world class wingers.

We had Rosicky pulling out of 50-50′s, spraying bad passes round like and idiot. Johann Djourou was defending like a total novice. Simply put, the man is not up to Premiership standards right now, his positional awareness is shot as is his confidence. Laurent Koscielny looks to have talent hidden away somewhere, but he’s still incredibly raw and naive as a defender.

Theo Walcott is supposed to be one of our lead players, 5 years on and he’s still leaving his full back horribly exposed, so much so he’s getting an on pitch b*llocking from him. He is yet another example of precocious youth talent never making that step up. Sure he can score goals using his pace, but so can Andy Johnson.

The main ingredient they all seem to lack is a good attitude and on pitch intelligence. How could the boys not see we were getting destroyed early on and make an on pitch decision. If the manager wouldn’t do it, surely the players could club together? To allow it to get to 8 goals is almost criminal for a top class football club. It’d be criminal in Sunday League. Surely when you reach the upper echelons of football, there should be some level of on pitch management that could prevent that happening?

Tactics…

I said this yesterday…

I do hope the coach has factored that into our tactics. I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks ‘just play your game’ on the white board will be enough.

Well, he didn’t. He never gives instructions to his players. That’s fine when you’ve inherited a back four and employed superstar talent, not when you’re fielding players who haven’t learned the game. Yesterdays game plan was suicide. The worst thing about it? It was predictable. Should a blogger be able to call out our match plan before it happens? Disgraceful management again.

Predictability…

Journalists, bloggers, pundits, ex-players and current players have all cited the problems Arsenal have. Le Grove has banged the drum for a change in mindset for three years. Every summer it doesn’t happen, every next summer it’s the same outcome. The defence never improves, the squad never gets bigger and all the time our quality diminishes as another top player gives up the project.

Am I looking for a gold star here? Absolutely not. But how can a blogger who can’t cook kidneys properly be picking out the problems in our squad and getting them right time after time? Wenger earns £7million a year and the mere mortals are telling him the problems before they happen. Even the blogs that cushion critique Wenger are struggling to deal with his inaction and lack of intent.

Still though, even after our worst defeat since 1886, Wenger nonchalantly declares that signings aren’t the solution. Unless of course, he’s recruiting unknown teenagers from around the globe. They’re always the solutions.

Is this the sort of man who should be managing our club? Or can we just call a spade a spade and be honest. It’s time for a change.

The board…

Equally complicit in this, regardless of the money they have offered as a transfer budget.

Stan took over the club, he was supposed to bring direction to a rudderless club and he’s done nothing.

Did he watch the game yesterday? Does he give a rats ass about what went on? Does he know he just oversaw the sale of our two best players and the worst defeat in living memory?

Stan has offered us nothing. If he’s happy with the status quo under the guise of self sustainability, what was the point of him buying the club?

Here are some points. Usmanov goes to the games. He has more money than Abramovich. His business record is phenomenal. He’d pay our Stadium off, he’s offered to fund squad strengthening and he wouldn’t tolerate a power structure based on anything other than success.

Forget your personal take on his alleged past, what matters to you, a self-sustaining model that is built on us selling our best players and hitting the fans with massive personal costs. Or a model that brought the success to the club?

Give me a football fan willing to invest their own money over an American whose 1st, 2nd and 3rd sport don’t come close to the great game any day.

Onto Gazidis. I can picture his issue. To sack Wenger he’ll need fans begging for it. His hands are tied, we can’t complain we want an autonomous manager then blame the board if the manager chooses not to spend. Wenger needs to go now, however, it’ll have to get a lot worse before that happens. It will though… sadly for us.

Where I will offer criticism is on players purchases. If Wenger wants Cahill, he should have been snapped up for a realistic price in June. If Wenger wanted Phil Jones in January, we should have paid the £12million they wanted in January. If we were in for Mata, what the hell is he doing lining up for Chelsea right now? Our backroom team costs £15million a year to service and their negotiation skills are nothing short of shocking. Is that an American problem? Have we recruited a whole team of executives who have zero experience of European football? It feels that way… because deals seem to be passing us by at a ridiculous pace. Or is it that we’re allowing Wenger to dictate what he pays for the players? Either way, some transparency is needed to explain the summer of inaction.

The manager…

‘In England always the first solution is to sign players, we have 8 players coming back’

Kind of sums the manager up. United were missing 5. They didn’t have to debut a defensive midfielder, field an inexperienced League One right back and chase the game with a 17 year old. Injuries are standard with Arsenal. Suspensions are down to bad discipline that the manager should be controlling. Signings would absolutely solve this problem. He doesn’t want to do that though. He is so focused on being the manager than won out against financial doping, that he’s lost track of what matters… the success of Arsenal football club.

He’s gone the way of Rafa, he’d rather make a moralistic point at the expense of a trophy. He’d rather shaft a whole season than do his job properly. That’s leading to empty seats in the ground. Regular booing and a squad of players that have never been lower. This team isn’t good enough for top 4 this year. That’s the reality of the situation. Even with all our players back, we’d struggle.

That’s mostly down to one man. It’s been a predictable demise and it’s only going to get worse. Swansea up next where we’ll have to start a fresh. Hopefully we’ll have a couple of new signings before then, if we haven’t expect the fans to show their dissent in a very public way.

Arsene has 3 days to save his career, I have no expectation he’ll do that even with the players I know he’s trying to bring in. Not even the most disgraceful defeat in living memory can jolt his stubborn dedication to the failing project. Still, it can’t go on like this forever, he’s accountable to the fans, the board are accountable to cash and the two go hand in hand. He won’t last the season, of that I’m sure.

The car crash is underway…

Have a great day Grovers, see you in the comments.

Park Chu-Young… the low down | Manchester United preview | Hazard Update

August 28, 2011

I do ok for a living, but I must say, nothing gives me more joy than raiding reduced food aisle in Waitrose. Landing a prawn salad for thirty nine pence when I’ve got a £20 note sitting in my pocket feels like a victory against the man.

Arsene Wenger is like me. He’s got £100million sitting in his pocket, but he’s not interested in shopping in the proven aisle, he’d much prefer to take a chance in the reduced section with a player that might represent some supreme value. How can I not respect this approach when I have the same vision when it comes to sustaining my body?

Problem is, I’ll buy anything with a yellow sticker on it, now sometimes that works out, I mean, who knew what a culinary sensation fresh veal escalopes at £2.68 could be (Sagna)? Other times though, things have gone horrifically wrong in my desperation for a bargain. Only recently, I purchased pig kidneys, I whacked them in the frying pan without soaking them in salt water to remove the unwanted bits, within 2 minutes my house smelt like a pig urinal and the taste of those kidneys still haunts me to this day (even though I knew it was potentially dangerous, I slogged away and tried to convince myself this bargain would work out (ring any bells?)).

You see, a bargain is a good idea when you have nothing to lose. However, when you’re cooking for your job, you’d best ensure that whatever you’re purchasing has the best chance of tasting good.

This guy is 26 years old, he hasn’t scored many goals and he’s not been tested at the highest level. Matt Spiro (@Mattspiro), a France based journo / commentator, has told me that he’s a good all round striker, he can head well, he’s very two footed and he has good technique. The overall feeling though is that he’s an underwhelming signing, even Lille were signing him as a back up. This isn’t first choice for us by the looks of it. Joel Campbell has been deemed a not so special talent and he could find his way into the Lille squad as a result.

People keep telling me I don’t like him because he’s not a £20million striker. Well, that’s not fair. I haven’t said I don’t like him. But Arsenal fans have got to stop getting excited by a player because he’s cheap. I generally judge a players quality on goals, assists, Champions League experience, trophies and pedigree. Now, I’m not saying this guy isn’t the one. He might be. But surely we should be looking at someone a bit more prestigious considering 1) We already have a striker who is good for 15 goals a season, who is an international, who is experienced and proven to a degree in the Premiership, who is 3 years younger (Who should be gone by next week now apparently) 2) Robin is only good for 30 games, whoever comes in should be equal to Robin’s quality if we want to progress.

I can paint any picture here I like, I haven’t seen him. However, I’d like to point out that we’ve gone from sniffing around Benzema and Tevez, to signing a player even the most ardent French Footballing Ambassador struggles to muster up 3 lines about.

Maybe he’ll come good. Maybe he won’t. Whichever way you look at it, he represents a risk…. and don’t kid yourself this is low risk because it’s a low fee. The cost of missing out on top 4 this year is roughly £25million and the potential loss of three of our best players who we’d have to sell as they wouldn’t re-sign.

The stakes have never been higher. Still, one thing you can guarantee with a Korean is that they will work till collapse for the team. He’s also the captain of South Korea and if he can score 12 goals for a relegated team, the chances are, he’ll definitely score 56 for us.

Eden Hazard

Many are speculating that we’ve blown our chance to sign Eden Hazard by gazumping them for Chu-Young. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case. The Korean is worth £3million, Hazard is potentially worth £26million plus. If we want the Belgian, we could have him. I don’t understand why we wouldn’t be interested in him for that fee. He’s clearly top-notch, he’ll likely go on to be one of the best. Dithering over price is what cost us Mata… a player who is clearly going to take the league by storm. I hope we don’t make the same mistake with Hazard. We need a talented creator, he’s one of the few available that we know we’ve got a solid interest in. Plus, Lille are a tiny club moving to a new stadium, even Arsenal had to sell their biggest players when we left Highbury.

That said, this is not the midfielder I was tentatively told we were going in strong for, though the word a a week or so a go was that we’d bid for him before month end…

Players…

It does strike me that the only market we’re interested in purchasing from is the French League. We’ve always spoken of the need to save for a rainy day, right now, as far as the squad is concerned, it’s pouring. Now, we’ve got £100million sitting in the bank, the rest of Europe is in dire financial straits and we’re not focusing our attention in any place other than Ligue 1? Arguably 4th or 5th when it comes to strength.

There surely must be some skint Spanish or Italian teams who have top players? Surely there is a left back or a decent holding midfielder out there who could do a job for us? Spain have the most technically accomplished players in the world, why aren’t we sniffing around their senior teams for first team players? Makes no sense… we saved for the day financial Armageddon came, now it’s here, we’re not taking advantage?

United…

So a massive whopper of a game today. Some say the biggest game since Premiership was created, others say just a big game because if we lose it, we’ll be severely off track in the league before its even got going.

The line up for tomorrow is looking more desperate than ever. I’m yet to hear if Vermaelen is fit for the game, there’s been no confirmation either way, news leaked to Young-guns that Sagna is ill, so that potentially means we’ll have Traore, Jenkinson, Kozzer and JD at the back. Then there’s the midfield. Now, if Tommy V is fit, we could move Kozzer into the holding role. That would give me some comfort, he’s fast, good on the ball and aggressive. However, if that isn’t a goer, you face the choice of Henri Lansbury who isn’t a holding midfielder or Coquelin who is greener than Arsenal’s pitch. Rosicky played well the other day and Rambo is a talented young player, but we’re playing a proper team today. Turning them over is a massive ask. Our midfield and defence could be in crisis…

Up top, the team picks itself, Robin, Theo and Arshavin. Outside of that, we have the weakest bench I can remember. AOC, Miyachi, Coquelin, Chamakh, Oyakzup, Bendtner and Fabianski. How have we got to this stage? It’s unbelievable. I’m having a face palm moment before we’ve even started.

Still, today is about miracles and proving people wrong. If we put the United keeper under pressure and work hard, you never know what could happen. United won’t play to our strengths in the same way Udinese did. Expect them to bully us with the absence of any strength and expect them to bomb our box with crosses. We have to be sharp from the off, we have to work our socks off. If we do that, anything is possible. We don’t have a strong line up today, I do hope the coach has factored that into our tactics. I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks ‘just play your game’ on the white board will be enough.

I’m nervous but excited to see what the game throws up. If it goes tits up, we’ve got time to bring in players, if it goes well, maybe we don’t quite need 6 players to compete.

Put your predictions on a postcard and sign it faith!

See you in the comments…

August 27, 2011

Arsenal’s new signing Park Chu Young will take on the vacant number 9 shirt vacated by Eduardo.

Pam also revealed the club are pushing hard very on a new midfielder and a centre back (you know the one)… more news if we get it.

I’ll give you the striker reaction tomorrow.

United Keeper key to win tomorrow | #Muppet | Madrid Midfielder anyone?

August 27, 2011

Gartside laughing at his retweet

You bubble along as a commentator on football, thinking that everyone in the game is as professional as they would be in the real world. Then bang, the Chairman of a top Premier League football club retweets the word #Bellend in retaliation to a low bid from Arsenal.

Firstly, what a ridiculously immature thing to do for someone in a position of power, I know that Bolton Wanderers fans aren’t exactly the most articulate bunch, but surely amongst the 15 or so Bolton fans on Twitter, there was something more intelligent to retweet than that? Secondly, it’s just a bid. My first bid on eBay is often a low one. If I can get my girlfriend second-hand lingerie for under a fiver, I’m laughing…

Positives I’m taking from this are that we’re in for Cahill, eventually, in the end… I’m also quite pleased that we appear to be the only club in for him. I know everybody jumped to Wenger’s defence yesterday when he said the bid wasn’t £6million, but believing a man who denied a quote he was on record as saying is a tough ask.  What we need to be careful of is alerting the world to the fact that we’re trying to land a top defender for under £10million. If someone else comes in and bids, we could find ourselves locked out.

Sol Campbell…

If you only read one thing today, make sure it’s Le Grove, if you’re going to read one other article, I beg of you to read the Guardian interview with Sol Campbell. He gives a super account of what’s missing at the club and he also lifts the lid on how the Invincibles used to work together.

‘Arsenal definitely need a few players to come in and shake things up; guys who are really passionate about winning and won’t accept failure. The fans want that too, they can see that Arsenal are close to being the best club in the world, they’ve got everything there, it just needs people to ruffle some feathers.’

Absolutely bang on the money. The culture in the club has definitely shifted since the old days.Because most of the players have only known one type of management, there aren’t the different approaches or opinions on what makes a good dressing room. Throughout the successful times with Wenger, you had elements of George Graham teams in there, you had players who’d had careers elsewhere. You had people who’d tear it up after the game to get to the bottom of a defeat.

From what I understand, the players at Arsenal don’t share the same urgency or disappointment after disappointment. You don’t get the team meetings where the players rip it out of each other. Win or lose, it’s the same attitude in the dressing room. That has to change. I’m hoping that Robin can bring a bit more passion to the captaincy. I’m hoping players like Frimpong and Jack have the personalities that dont’ tolerate weak performances or lack lustre effort on the pitch.

We have a very good squad core right now… what it lacks is the depth around it. Wenger is talking about signing up 3 players. he wants a striker, a midfielder and a defender. If those players are top quality, then it’ll certainly make a difference. It still ignores the fact that the squad was short last year and by the time the window closes, we will have sold 9 players who were important to team in some way last season. I think we need a left back, Traore doesn’t have the mental strength to cut it at the top-level and Gibbs is inadequate from a fitness point of view.

I’m excited about the prospect of a top striker coming in. Joel Campbell still doesn’t have a work permit from what I understand and even if he did, banking on a player who didn’t make more than 7 appearances for a crap Costa Rican team would be pretty dim, even if he does have shades of Anelka about him.

If anyone knows of a Tevez type striker out there… do let me know.

Other news…

Interesting to see that Spurs signed Adebayor. Just when you thought the Togan couldn’t stoop any lower eh? Disgust aside, he’s a good player. If you can get his head straight, he’s the perfect battering ram. I think that’s a good signing for them. A player I think we should be looking at if he’s available is Lassana Diarra. He was shipped out because he wanted games a few years ago. We know he’s talented, we know he’s experienced in the league and we know he’s available. I’ve seen videos of him being bullied by the Chelsea boys, it’s clear he’s not a trouble maker… why not snap him up as additional cover in the middle of the park?

Injury news!

We can end on a positive note. Though suspension has severely hampered our chances on Sunday, at least our defensive mashup can have another crack at playing together. Tommy V should be back, JD is ok and our new left back Sagna is also fit. It’s going to be a massive ask for our defence to deal with some serious wide talent at the weekend, but at least Vermaelen will be fit.

I know United look great, honestly, they really do. Sometimes though, when a team is so over hyped at the start of a season, they drop a clanger and make everyone look stupid. Can they drop that clanger tomorrow? You never know. At least we’ve got a keeper who can win us points this year. That makes me a hell of a lot less nervous going into the game. United also have a very dodgy keeper in tomorrow which is why I’d have opted to play Bendtner. We need to fire lots of high balls at him and we need to pressure him all game. He’ll make errors, his confidence is in tatters. He could be the key to any result tomorrow, a nervous keeper means a nervous defence.

If we aren’t hustling De Gea tomorrow… that will tell you a lot about how little we pay attention to opposition weaknesses. Something I’ve been complaining we ignore for years. Something that reaps rewards when executed well. It’s a game of slim margins, we need all the help we can get.

How do you think the team will line up? I have no idea… the best squad line up gets repackaged as my own tomorrow morning!

Right… see you in the comments!

P.S. Swansea tickets on General sale? Oh my…

Arsenal bid low, as usual, for Cahill | Kaka, Zarate or Hazard?

August 26, 2011

Good morning Grove fans! So the Champions League eh? What a laugh! We were one of the top seeds and Platini and friends conspired against us by pitting us against Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Olympiacos (<– Spelling change? I thought it had a K”)

Well, if you’re going to win the competition, you’ve got to play the best. Both Dortmund and Marseille have exciting young managers and they have some top talent I’m sure a lot of clubs have been interested in. No trips to Russia or the Ukraine to worry about though and to be honest, three games I’m excited to see.

In transfer news, apparently after months of threatening to buy Cahill, we’ve lodged a £6million bid for him. Amazing eh? Even in the last year of his contract, that bid is laughable. I don’t know why we do it. Why couldn’t we have got this nonsense out the way early in the window?

We’ve also been sniffing around Raul Albiol of Madrid. He’s rumoured to be available for £8million. He’s a smart looking player, though I am dubious about signing a Madrid cast off defender. We need steel, is he that guy?

As the deadline gets closer, more and more you get the feeling there won’t be a flurry of inbound talent. If that’s the way the manager feels, fine, but he’ll feel the full wrath of the fans if it goes tits up this year.

My concern isn’t just on the quality side. It’s the fact Wenger is totally comfortable admitting that Jack Wilshere played in the red zone for two months last year and that may have played a part in his injury, yet can’t correlate that to having an inadequate squad size. Precocious talent should be nurtured not exploited like an Egyptian Donkey (world class Donkey exploiters so I hear).

United on Sunday with a woefully depleted squad is hot on most people’s minds. I’m worried it could be a spanking. They know how to play us and they really did look impressive against Spurs. Their benchmark is Barcelona, ours is winning more 3rd place trophies.

I’m struggling to pick out a first team 11 that could do the job. Still, we’ve taken out big teams against the odds before, like the Galacticos with Flamini at left back. Anything is possible, I’m just fearing the odds.

Ghana…

Frimpong is at the centre of a tug of war between Ghana and England. The midfield terrier is on record as saying he’d like to represent Ghana, in my opinion, that would be a massive loss to England. He looks the type of player we need going forward. I also fear by signing up for Ghana, his value will plummet. At the moment, Kenny Dalglish has told me he’s easily a £27million player, if he chooses Ghana, he’ll be worth less than £4.5million.

Creators…

The papers are having a field day… the three front-runners for the creative spot are…

Kaka: A dream player in his prime, a bit of a crock nowadays. His talent would certainly lift spirits, but could a player of 29 do the business in the Premiership in the back 9 of his career? My fear… maybe not… He could either be a Davids like inspiration, or a Shevchencko like disaster.

Zarate: This player is a bundle of lunacy and talent all rolled into one. He’s incredibly skilled and pacey out wide or through the middle. Could Wenger handle his crazy side? Who knows… he’d be a curve ball, that’s for sure.

Hazard: This guy is basically the new N’Zogbia. He’s been linked with us every summer for 3 years, yet still, we haven’t dropped a bid in for him. Do we need a classy winger to compliment the 16 others we have in the side? Maybe not… however, this boy is mustard… and he’s for the now.

Finally, before we go, I wanted to pay tribute to a Gooner pal of ours called Terry. Sadly, cancer got the better of him last night. I actually took his season over this year as he couldn’t get up to the games. He was a top class Gooner, a long-term patron of Blackstock Road take aways and still was still rocking a replica kit in his sixties, our thoughts are with his family today.

Happy Friday Grovers!

P.S. We’re looking to redevelop the site, hopefully through a web design firm who are Gooners and have kind rate cards. If you’ve got a good track record of great design work and can manage the relatively easy job of skinning and moving a blog, we’d love to hear from you!

A victorious Arsenal matchday report on a Spursday! | Four missing for United

August 25, 2011

Doesn’t that feel refreshing? Waking up one day in August without a metaphorical cloud over your Arsenal head?

Last night was a game that I was seriously worried about. I don’t ever dread games. This was a game that I not only dreaded, I almost feared. We’ve been on a horrible run this season (back date the run to February), we’ve been battered by suspensions, player exits, poor form and a lack inbound players. If we’d flunked out last night, that really could have set the tone for an awful season.

The line up was pretty bold from Wenger. He brought Frimpong into the fold, something many Arsenal fans wanted to see, but an inclusion many might have been shy about admitting they wanted in public. He sat just in front of the defence, giving Alex Song a little more freedom in front to make things happen creatively in front (I know, like letting Stephen Hawking paint your front door). A bit of an odd decision you have to say. Up top, our front three looked very scary. Theo for his pace, Gervinho for his trickery and Robin for his experience.

We started very brightly, we had 2 attempts on goal inside the first 2 minutes. Gervinho bounded into the box, cut across goal and the keeper had to intercept, moments later Theo smashed a shot at the goal forcing a parry.

Udinese weren’t going to shrink away into the night, Di Natale showed us he meant business when he cooly finished from an offside position. The play was end to end, it was a real slog fest, proper European football.

Udinese forced a couple of solid saves from Chezzer before hitting the post from a poorly executed downward header.

Frimpong was doing a good job guarding the midfield. He’s fierce in the tackle and he was making some superbly timed interceptions. He’s pretty much everything you want in a modern day footballer. He’s fast, aggressive, has a natural love for playing the game. Alex Song could learn a lot from the young Englishman’s attitude (He’s been selected for the England U21′s).

Our best chance of the half came when Gervinho worked his way into the box, cut back on his full back, slipped Theo in for an 8 yard tap in, he hit the keeper, Robin slammed the rebound into an Udinese defender. Great opportunity missed…

Di Natale was entertaining to watch, he was more stereotypical Italian than a pot of Dolmio wearing a latex puffa jacket. His movement was amazing and the effort he was putting in was commendable.

He showed his worth when he slipped off the shoulder of an unaware JD, Pinzi picked out his run with a floated pass, the Italian guided a looping header back over Chezzer into the top corner. A goal of pure quality. Absolutely stunning. Shocking though, that a player of that height is winning balls in our box…

There was another chance for Vermaelen to fluff a front post clearance, luckily for us, Udinese didn’t have their shooting boots on.

Arsenal were in trouble. We weren’t looking creative and we now had to chase a game. Wenger threw on Tomas Rosicky and sacrificed Frimpong (boooo). What a decision though. The Czech immediately changed the game by moving the ball around with more pace and directness.

We had a freekick that was missed by everyone in the box, JD perfecting the downward jump to evade the ball. Theo tried to place a 32 yard shot which was ambitious. Things were getting tense. Wenger cracked open a fresh bottle of Italian mineral water, you feared for that bottle, you truly did.

He needn’t have worried, Gervinho sauntered into the Udinese box again, he cut back, Rosicky flew over the ball, knowing that Robin was behind him to bang it home. It felt like job done, they’d need 2 more goals to win. Not impossible, but a tough task all the same.

Down the other end, the referee blew up for a very dubious Vermaelen handball in the box. Penalty. This wasn’t what we needed. I had faith though, Di Natale stepped up, he smashed the ball high and right, Chezzer scrambled across, threw a hand up at the very last moment and some how tipped the ball over the bar! A quite incredible save. In fact, the best penalty save I’ve ever seen an Arsenal keeper make, yep, better than Seaman against Sampdoria! Unbelievable.Lady Mental Belief was on our side tonight, there was no way we’d let this slip.

Theo was involved in the action again, he played a one two with Sagna and he was off, he danced into the box and smashed home near post. Game over, job done, we were through to the next round of the Champions League.

Thursdays from now on, are known as Spursdays.

Don’t forget that when you’re enjoying a few after work relaxing drinks tonight and your Spurs supporting mates have to slip off because their team are playing the Cardinal Harriers in Estonia.

Conclusion

Under the circumstance, last night was a fantastic result. We’ve taken a battering this week losing players and picking up injuries. For such an inexperienced team, a response like last night was refreshing. In the end, we created plenty of chances, had plenty of shots and came away with the result. There were positive performances from Frimpong in the first half and Alex Song in the second. I thought Jenkinson did very well for someone so green… Eboue who I found myself asking?

Up top, I was really impressed with Gervinho. He looked much sharper tonight. He’s not afraid to hit the line, he loves taking on players and he’s not shot shy. That sort of play can be contagious. It gives other players the confidence to express themselves. Theo Walcott, despite the goal, didn’t really do it for me. Sure he’s fast, but his final ball and his finishing really can be dreadful at times. Hopefully if we can keep him fit for an extended period he can shake that rustiness out of his games. Robin Van Persie looked good. He takes more of a lead role with the team and for once, it feels like we have a captain who won’t be soft. He’s Dutch… naturally outspoken, naturally fiery.

Midfield for me is still a bit of a problem. Aaron Ramsey is a superb talent but he looked lost at times last night. His natural position isn’t as a creator, that’s why he looks like he’s struggling at times. Rosicky came on and made a real difference, but, like Sol Campbell, you’re going to have to accept he doesn’t have the engine for a full season. He needs to be rested between games now otherwise he’ll have a break down. We desperately need inspiration and it has to come from an external source…

Arsene Wenger looked very down after the game despite the win. All he’d say on players is that Arsenal have worked very hard this summer. It doesn’t sound promising and I’d be very surprised if we managed to bring in more than two players before the window shuts. Regardless of the win last night, that squad is incredibly weak. How could it not be? It was weak last season with two of the best midfielders in the world at its heart. Don’t do what Arsenal fans do every year… take one win as vindication that we’ll be challenging for the title. This squad needs work and everyone at the club would tell you that… let’s hope Wenger sees it the same way.

Manchester United are up next. They’ll offer a far more solid challenge. We’ll take confidence into that game, sadly not three of our stand out performers from last night as they’re suspended. Apparently, Vermaelen is also injured as well. Still, the good news is, we have £100million to spend. There’s no Champions League loss to mourn. We live to fight another season in limelight!

Well played Arsenal, you done us all proud last night!

Arsenal want to compete with the best teams in Europe, so sell our best players then.

August 24, 2011

Yes he really said that at his press conference as he fidgeted on his seat looking nervous, ‘to compete with the best you need to be in the Champions league’ so we’ll throw away our league position in the last three months of the season and when we get into qualifying we’ll do it not only without our two best players, we’ll do it without replacing them. Not only that,we’ll qualify without our shining light of a central midfielder because we ‘overused’ him last season. That wasn’t his fault by the way, he had no choice.

What a nutter, how is this board standing back and allowing this train wreck to happen in slow motion.

If we go out of the Champions league tonight and lose to the Mancs on Sunday and he’s still employed it will be a travesty, if they get shot of him then, the new man won’t be able to replace what we have lost until January and by then we could have no chance of getting back into the Champions league next season, what a mess, what a complete board of incompetent tools.

Or, and that’s a big or, we could go through tonight and smash the Mancs on Sunday, so how would we do that then? My guess is to surprise them from the off, sling the new kids on and hit them with pace and power, yes that sounds like madness but if we go with the team that won last week we are destined to crash out.

This would be my team.

Chezzer

Sagna Vermaelen Miquel Jenkinson

Frimgpong Ramsey Lansbury

Ryo Robin Chamberlain

Yes I know it’s a wildly inexperienced and raw side but at least Udinese won’t know what to expect, Miquel did okay against Liverpool, Ryo in his youtube clips looks direct, if we can use him before Wenger removes that quality he may get us a much needed goal and Chamberlain has to be worth a punt or we have spunked £15mil down the drain.

Song is not as solid as Frimpong and he gives the ball away too much, at least when Frimpong loses the ball he tries to get it back, and he loves Arsenal.

Samir if you’re reading this, I wish you luck as I don’t blame you, why would you want to hang around to see what Wenger is doing to our beloved club, you don’t support Arsenal, you don’t have to, we have no choice.

Talking of which, I would love Ivan and Stan to actually ask Wenger what his end game is. By that I mean this obsession with kids has to have and end, there has to be a point where Wenger says ‘and at this point we will begin to dominate’ or do we just tread water with kids for ever.

And it’s not like we are saving money, Chamberlain cost more than Nasri and is 4 years younger than he was when we bought him.

It’s called an end game, all businesses have them, you have to have a point where whatever your strategy, it pays off.

So that’s the question I have for today, what is the end game Wenger?

So in the last few years we have made £100mil on 4 players, add that to all the rest of the money and we must be close to debt free, you can’t bang on about the stadium costs forever!

Let’s get behind the boys tonight, let’s surprise them with a new and pacey team, let’s go through in Europe and salvage some pride, I know we have no players left but it is only Udinese and they lost their best two as well.

Have a great day today Grovers and let’s hope the team does too, despite the mad sod we have managing us.

P.S. Anyone notice our British core? We’ll soon be media and referee darlings!

Nasri on the verge of a start… Is Wenger playing with boardroom fire?|

August 23, 2011

Let’s get the minor moan out the way… Arsene Wenger / 2 match touchline ban.

Now, I’m not pretending I know how to manage a football team, I’m not pretending I understand the true merits of a false 9, but, if I’d been told I couldn’t communicate with the dug out, the last think I’d have is Pat Rice flapping hand signals at me like a retarded seagull caught in a fisherman’s net… I mean honestly, what were those two thinking?

Solution

Now, I’m not sure how Colin Lewin communicates with the bench. But I’ve seen him talking into his jacket. So I’m assuming he’s either insane, or using a radio. Why the hell couldn’t Wenger sit with a radio hooked into his jacket, then when he needed to speak to the bench, walk inside and contact Colin, who could relay to Wenger, or speak to someone else on the bench that wouldn’t be too obvious. I mean honestly… am I being too harsh here? Surely in the pre-match meet up that wasn’t the best solution an Arsenal brainstorm session could offer?

Anyway, he could be on the bench for Wednesday as we’re appealing it. God knows how that appeal is going to look!

Leaked UEFA Appeal

Commercial Deals

Manchester United tied up a deal worth £40million a season for 4 years with Logistics powerhouse DHL. Now, I used to work in the logistics game, DHL have a similar reputation to United. They’re one of the biggest, but pretty vulgar at the same time. I don’t want to go into detail because I’d get sued, but I could tell you a few stories about why United and DHL are a perfect brand fit. So United make £24milllion year from their shirt deal, Arsenal sit 7th, one place behind Villa, one above Fulham on £5.5million. Marvo… still, at least we struck our 8th commercial deal with Bettson last week. Only 15 more and we’ll match United’s 23 commercial deals.

Just for your reference, the opportunity cost of our weak commercials according to the AST was £35mill way back when. Now United clear £39mill more than us a season! That’s one Kun Aguerro!

Samir Nasri…

The deal for out piggy little Frenchman should be concluded before Wednesday, apparently it hinges on Samir’s Dad wanting to take £3million for his part in the 3 week deal. It’s a struggle to see where Sammy gets his lust for the mercenary lifestyle eh? Arsenal are posturing over the final part of the deal, but good riddance I say. I’m sure we can find someone else who can give us more than 3 months value in 3 years. I struggle to see how he fits into their system, but who cares eh? As long as someone like Eden Hazard replaces him, I’m not fussed.

The Times are reporting Wenger might field Sammy against Udinese in defiance of the board… they’re also reporting City and Chelsea are in for Parker.

United vs Spurs

Spurs were pretty much dealt a spanking last night. Without Modric, they’ll struggle this year. Defoe was terrible. I do worry how they’d look with Diarra and Ade in their set up though. Two squad changing players regardless of their reputations.

United didn’t dazzle, yet still had 24 attempts on goal, they’ve got a young and powerful team there who have a very good attitude to the game. Their youth team players have come through slowly and they’ve been blended perfectly with experience. They’re a stronger outfit than last year, which isn’t what I wanted to see.

In 98′ Wenger was the benchmark for Fergie, same in 02 and 04. Trouble with Arsene is that he didn’t kick his philosophy on past 98′. What he needed to do this summer was shake up the set up, hand over control of first team coaching to someone else and work on what he does best, bringing in talent.

We needed a shake up of personnel in the back room. Pat Rice is still running warm ups the same as he was in 98′. He’s an old boy now. We’re expecting miracles at the club when the main back room power brokers/decision makers are the same.

Why do you think Wenger strong armed Pat into staying on? Because the thought of someone coming in and telling him how it is was too much of a worry. If the mind-set of a manager is he knows best about everything, progress becomes harder and harder the further away from reality they find themselves.

This is why Wenger’s eventual replacement becomes interesting. The club can go one of two ways.

Senior Manager

We appoint a Louis Van Gaal or a Guus Hiddink and allow them to bring in a full squad of backroom staff. Journeymen managers like that have expensive teams they take with them and big clubs allow them to recruut for themselves because they are proven quality and success usually follows them.

Trouble with this is you face a huge bill should you remove the manager. England have this issue now. Fabio’s backroom staff are all legible for a bus pass, all on monster deals and they’d cost a bomb to sack. Club owners lose an element of control when they recruit like this.

Young Hot Shot

Now this is the more modern method. You approach a manager like Owen Coyle or David Moyes and offer him maybe two members of staff. The club directly employ the medical team, the GPS staff and the specialist coaches as well as the Youth Team coaches.

Now this means that if your young upstart bombs after 5 months all the infrastructure remains. It also gives the CEO and the owners more say over how the team is run. Some say that is a managers nightmare scenario, others would say that this stops a manager taking control of a club.

That Article…

Arsenal responded to the site who published that story yesterday to say that it was nonsense. Incredible how many people chose to believe an article that even if true, had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of a summer that hasn’t seen us target any player who earns £150k a week. We don’t offer mega money as a basic, but that’s not to say we don’t top up salaries with bonuses if we need to. Regardless, we can vastly improve our team with players who earn far less than £100k a week.

It’s also amazing how many people criticised Katie in the press office for responding. She’s e-mailed me plenty of times to correct my inaccuracies. She’s so helpful, she even proof reads my posts.

Blogger outreach has to be part of any clubs strategy. Combined we probably generate more traffic per article than most of the news agencies Arsenal stories. That’s a powerful reach. Like we’ve said many times before, the club read the blogs… they’d be stupid not to.

Udinese

Players are sneaking back to fitness. By my reckoning we’ll have JD, Djourrou, Song, Gervinho, Frimmers and Jack all in contention. This my friends is both a gift and a curse. Rushing players back for important Champions League games has stifled us in the past. Remember away in Portugal last year with Cesc? Or Barcelona away with Cesc? Bloody Cesc…

Anyway, there’s no choice really. Unless we can control the game with possession, we could find ourselves in trouble. All we need is one goal really. Then they’d need 3. That shouldn’t be a major ask, however, with a team on the floor like ours, it might be.

Mata

Apparently Mata went to Chelsea as they had a better footballing offer. A bit gutting. But good to know it wasn’t because we weren’t in for him or that he wanted £6000million a year to come to us. Simple solution there, make the team more appealing to imports Arsene.

Marketing Mag

If you’re in marketing, Charlie Allen and Mark Gonnella gave me some quotes for a football and social media piece I wrote for The Drum. Arsenal do pretty well out of it, well worth a read if you find that type of nonsense interesting.
