Arsenal concede 2 leads, lose own silverware and booed off by the home fans. Good times!

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So another game, another disappointing result with familiar traits. We were 1-0 up, cruising, then we slipped up and conceded our lead late on with some typically slack defending.

Conceding two leads twice in two days is pretty poor. People can quote preseason statistics around what a good preseason means, but the point isn’t about whether your preseason results impact your campaign, the point yesterday was that the same old problems are still there because the coach hasn’t made any changes of note.

Just because it’s a preseason game, doesn’t mean you should have a different mentality going into it. You play to win. The same lack of ruthlessness that dogged us last season was on show yesterday. The only player who looked like he wanted to kill the game was Gervinho, oh, and Jack Wilshere before he limped off with a not so serious injury (we hope).

The game finished to a crescendo of boos. Now, as you know, I don’t boo. However, I’ll defend the right of a paying fan to express their concern at the lack of activity going on at the club this summer. The Emirates Cup isn’t billed as a fitness work out, it’s billed as a showcase for the new season. An opportunity of attendance for those less privileged than the season ticket holders.

They, like us, were promised that Wenger knew the problems with his squad and we were told he’d be active in the summer transfer market. So far, there is no evidence of either. Is it extreme booing preseason? Probably. However, this isn’t a knee jerk reaction to two bad games this is a result of a managers flawed transfer policies of the past 5 years. Everyone can see what’s coming… again.

… and before I leave this topic, lets put something in perspective. The players were booed for a shoddy showing over two days. Big deal. They’re professionals. Like Diaby said last year, the fans at the Emirates are too soft on the players. Everyone wants to play for Barca and Madrid, their fans are shocking in how quick they are to bust out a white hanky, doesn’t stop Cesc wanting to join them does it? Just because the players accept bad performances… doesn’t mean the fans have to.

You know what I find most embarrassing? Not the fans. It’s the fact we’re still talking about the same problems we were last year and the year before that and the year before that. We have the only manager in the world who cures the problem of conceding from set pieces by selling an experienced left back and buying in a winger.

There’s still time to bring in an experienced centre back, there’s still time to seal the deal with Mata and there’s still time to take Scott Parker on loan to shore up our midfield. We need a bit of experience and grit to bind the obvious talent this squad oozes. We also need to start forcing players into taking responsibility on the pitch. I think that’ll come when we bring in a new leader. Well, I’m hoping that will come when we bring in a new leader.

Everything at the club is in a bit if a mess. We’re where we normally are at this time of the year. We have some really exciting young players in the melting pot, we have some seasoned pro’s who are looking to prove themselves, we have a squad that’s too small and we have at least one of our best players leaving the club.

Would we be talking about booing if Wenger had just bought what was needed, hell, even just a decent centre back! Doubtful. It’s the inaction that gets people. That horrible question every fan has at the back of their mind…

‘is he even aware there is a problem?’

How the next two weeks pan out will go along way to deciding the season. I truly believe you have to win the summer to stand a chance of winning the league. There are so many variations of what could happen… so I’ll bide my time before passing judgment. One thing is for sure, the fans didn’t like what they saw yesterday, Wenger will have heard, which might not be a bad thing. We should be grateful we’re seeing the cracks now, while there’s still time to paper over them with some heavy duty cement. 2 clean sheets this weekend might have left the club feeling very content.

Positives

Gervinho is a man on a mission, that mission? To cause a problems up front. His runs aren’t telegraphed, he can drop in late like Freddie, he can hang off the last man like Ade and he is very comfortable out wide like Thierry. His passing needs fine tuning and obviously his finishing has another level to reach, but so far, so good.

Benik Afobe came on for Jack and looked very solid. He’s calm on the ball, he has great balance and he’s very strong. If he’s the reason JET left, no problem from me. I’d be happy with him in the mix for 4th striking option.

Rosicky looked very good in the first half. Pretty much everything he did looked classy. He was direct and adventurous all game even sneaking in with a couple of shots and an assist for Robin.

It was great to have Vermaelen back in the side. He’s very assured on the ball and he’s hungry to defend. Kyle Bartley also landed an introduction to the 1st team, he had twenty minutes to play, he made a couple of blocks and scored an own goal which was unlucky. One thing about Kyle… He is massive. He should be battling it out as our 5th choice this year.

Thierry returning really did showcase why we’ve got some of the best fans in the world. Perhaps his return was an ingredient that made yesterday worse, it was a stark reminder of how far away we are. Thierry set up the winner and gave Championship quality Redbulls the Emirates Cup win. It all got a little sycophantic in the end, but like Keown said, that sort of reception should be what the players of now aspire to have when they retire for the game. After all, when you have more pound notes than sense, it’s the adulation you crave…

The next two weeks are massive, right now, we’re not title contenders, only one man can make that right, if he doesn’t, I’m afraid we’ve all just witnessed Ground-Hog Summer 5: Return of the Hog, which means next season will be very disappointing.

What the hell is Bill doing to that Groundhog?

Samir – Not every successful Chairperson acts immediately and publicly. Changing a regime overnight is not always the answer. Sure, he might be treating Arsenal like a business investment but who is to say that you can’t have a successful business investment that includes a winning team?

The ‘throwing money at it’ approach does not have be the only solution. Btw – Not sure he has to pay off the debt out his pocket or make transfer funds available? Our debt servicing ability is fine and so is our transfer budget. The problem is Wenger when it comes to transfers.

All I am saying is that I will give him a little time to see what his plan is. You don’t have to agree with me. That is your right.

  2. JJ

Geoff – I do remember you saying that you have been to SL. How worldly of you! Actually, I have many gaffs. I was born in Scotland, raised in Australia and have lived in LA for the last 9 years… and for that reason I will not discuss any other sports here! j/k.

  3. Rocky89

You have to understand Kroenke is not into winning franchises only profitable ones. St Louis Rams have been in bottom 3 of NFL last 3 years which is quite hard to achieve given the draft sytem, yet they make alot of money as a Franchise.

  4. Rocky89

To get shot of Wenger by end of season we will probably need to fall hard and fast, i.e not qualify for CL and not make top 4 in EPL

  5. ice

    just been told it’s………

change the manager or CHANGE the manager

    time…….

we start the season looking for 3 players and a management team then (let’s hope it really is MVB and DB10)

  6. moe

    Match

Let say Rednose is gone tomorrow man will get a new manager and how will the style of play be? MAN UNITED WAY? how does man united play?
    ——————————————————————————
4 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League title, 3 Carling Cups since Arsene last won a trophy. They also score more goals each season and concede way less. That’s how they play.
    ——————————————————————————
    2 Champions League finals too

  7. Mayank

Yeah Geoff… Teaching the locals English might have helped in handling the red tape back when but looks like a stupid move now.

  8. kapslock

La Repubblica report Mauro Zarate’s agent has flown into London for talks with an un-named team.

    Anyone know anything about this?

  9. incesc

    who told you that ICE?

    the voices in your head?

wouldnt surprise me tho, considering we have had all summer to do it if we sack him on august 31st

  10. Dutchman

Haha, we are a really a nearly team on all fronts. What about Alvarez and Campbell? Oh and reina, ronaldo, drogba, alonso….??!!
Fuck wenger, he is a disgrace. How can he still be here??! And gazides fuck off too, you are doing nothing to win trophies. You ahve to sign players, fucking bitch!

  11. Mayank

Oh and for the record Brick Lane is apparently Bengladeshis don’t confuse us with them. It’d be like me calling you Welsh.

  12. incesc

i know balague is a lying cunt, but its such an outlandish claim for a supposed “journalist” its almost too far out not to be true.

  13. Rohan

    Boo Nasri?

Fuck no. We need him to be at his best if we are to win anything. Not drive him out of the club like we did with Adebayor.

  14. Mayank

Incesc, It is surprising that he’s preceded by the phrase, Spain’s most respected Journo…

For a guy who gets so much wrong he should have a reputation on par with Palmer.

  15. kapslock

Apparently his release clause has always been €60m – And it was just a gentleman’s agreement – I still think €22m gets him.

What the fuck? This is just going around in circles.

  16. Dutchman

A clause is not the money you HAVE TO pay for a player, but it is the maximum you can pay for him, so if Valencia need the money they could sell Mata for 22m for sure.

  17. gambon

Lol, typical comment from Rohan there.

As soon as it looks like we’ve fucked the deal up, suddenly the player isnt very good.

  18. gambon

So what is the Profit Mohammed up to as we speak?

1- Negotiating for experienced world class players?

2- Watching kids play at a park?

3- Counting his money and guarding it with a shotgun?

4- Making sweet sweet love to Abou Diaby?

  19. Samir

Juan Roman Riquelme: Emmanuel Frimpong was the most important player for Arsenal against Boca Juniors

Argentine midfielder admits that the 19-year-old Gunner was the best player on the pitch for Arsene Wenger’s men, during the recent Emirates Cup game between the two sides

  20. Zee

It’s a good job Newcastle appear to have a similar summer philosophy as us. Sell Carroll, reinvest next to fuck all. Sell Nolan, tell Barton he can can go for fuck all. We can go there knowing that when that fifth goal goes in, just maybe we can shut up shop

  21. gambon

    Zee

Hes ranting at the guy who made “gentle ben” – he says the exploitation of the black bear was racism, and they never wouldve done that to a polar bear.

  22. Zee

Gambon I have a dream that one day Biko will fuck off for good. That speaking French thing Geoff quoted actually made me angry

  23. gambon

Cahill & Jagielka would be ideal. It would give us 3 very good cbs as wee as 3 clowns.

Dont expect it to happen though.

  24. arsenalone

    Incesc
if thats true we will all be wanking all week 2 class centre halfs brilliant please Arsene make that happen

The whole club would be lifted and this fourum

  25. Zee

I’m going to try to infiltrate the inner workings of Biko, find out why that racism light flashes in his head every 9.5 seconds. To do this I’m going to set a cyber trap, call it a blog fake tache, mazher mahmood style, and wait for him to come onto me. To do this I’m going to go by the name Martin Luther blissett.

  26. BillikenGooner

    Frimpong is the answer.
    Bartley is the answer.
    Miyachi is the answer.

Arsenal preseason, where Wenger prays 19 year olds “prove themselves” so he doesn’t have to buy anyone.

We are going to try to win silverware with an U-21 team.

  27. kapslock

Juan Mata’s father says Valencia rejected Arsenal’s offer for the Spain international. Staying with Valencia now looks most likely option.

We probably offered like £10 million. What a bunch of cunts.

  28. moe

Joey Barton is NOT a defensive midfielder. Where is he going to fit in?
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
He does not plat tippy tappy football and he can take set pieces

  29. Samir

Valencia received our offer yesterday, they rejected it.

Shows over everybody, let’s pack up and go home.

  30. gambon

Infact, if we signed Cahill & Jagialka I would promote Bartley to number 4 CB.

    Vermaelen
    Cahill
    Jagielka
    Bartley

There is a good balance of experience, height & I like that its very english.

    Sell Djourou, Squilaci & Koscielny.

  31. Rhyle

This talk of the Mata deal falling through has made all the talk of Miyaichi on the Arsenal website make sooooo much more sense…pathetic…

  32. Zee

We’re so easily deluded. Like we’ll buy two senior england international defenders in the same fucking decade let alone the same week

  33. Yandi

So Alex Song took a freekick for us yesterday just outside the box. I then proceeded to switch the fucking television off. That right there was Arsenal-2011 in a portable bite-size package. Pathetic. Alex Song does carry himself like an arrogant fucker these days, doesn’t he? Disputes with his national team captain; Blonde hair, now followed by a mohawk; Fake Iniesta impressions… All this while he’s still bang average, and one of the main reasons we don’t win trophies. He needs to get a reality check. Sadly with Wenger, this will never happen. He’s probably the guy that bought him the fucking peroxide!

  34. kapslock

Was it Song who took the freekick? I didn’t see that. What a tosser. It’s so obvious that he thinks so much of himself. He is average and gave the ball away so much yesterday.

  35. Yandi

Amidst the fanfare about the defence, we actually have ticking timebombs all over the squad. Do people actually realise how bad the situation up front is? So bad actually, that we’re a RVP injury away from Chamakh being a starter. And frankly, he is fucking shocking. I’d rather have Bendtner, and that’s saying something. But this is the sad thing about Arsenal really… No matter how fucking poor Chamakh is, I know he’s the least of our worries, with Squillaci, Djourou and Koscielny the bedrock of our title chase. Not forgetting Gibbs at left-back. My God do we have a pathetic squad.

  36. pharo9ja

gambon you are an outright twit of a cunt aren’t you? and your side kick zee? what, he’s to you what diaby is to wenger?

  37. OPG

Lol another Arsenal fan met Cahill in a hotel they’re in Hereford for a friendly, it must be fate lol.

    Greatgooner David Gould
Staying in a hotel with the Bolton team still trying to track down Cahill and encourage him to join the Arsenal #arsenal

Some are desperate for Joey Barton now..

  38. Wengerssweeties

We do have Benfica plus 3 and a half weeks to sign players yet…

The stupid thing is Wenger hasn’t acted early because he always waits to see most clubs do business early.

Didn’t we sign Gilberto quite late? could be wrong.

  39. BillikenGooner

That some are hoping for, or at the least wouldn’t mind, Barton (and the only reason that is an option is because he is free) truly shows how sad the situation has become.

  40. incesc

Everyone is just desperate for something different, barton represents that.

over chamakh almunia kocielny and squilacci id take conference players just to try something new

  41. gambon

    Wengerssweeties

We were champions when we signed Gilberto. Now we are on the verge of falling out of the top 4.

Massive difference. We’ve already fucked it.

  42. JJ

Yandi, I agree with your last comment but I don’t remember seeing Song take a free-kick… That doesn’t mean to say that he didn’t nor does it mean to say that we have any decent free-kick takers. I think Nasri is the best atm.

  43. Wengerssweeties

Just looked it up, we signed Gilberto on 7th Aug 2002 for £4.5 million.

He won the FA Cup then the league in midfield.

    How’s that for memory action!!

If Wenger signs anyone half his talent I’ll be pleased.

  44. JJ

Sorry but I don’t want Barton at the Arsenal no matter what. That would be like saying that we should want Evra to play for us. No thanks!

  45. MARK GOONER

    song is average

we still need a back up keeper
    a left back
a world class DM to play with ramsey and jack,
a left sided player to replace that ponce nasri
and ship out chamakh, bentnder and vela with bring in a world class forward and not to mention at least one top class experinced centre back

no way in world we will get half of that
wenger has blown his last chance with me this window i really thought he would swallow some pride

    how stupid was i

  46. OPG

Yea Gilberto won the World cup that year.
This Mata stuff is confusing especially with Balague and Hunter with their ITK stuff.

  47. Dutchman

It would be so typical wenger if Miyaichi will replace Nasri or something. Wenger has always a price in his head for a player, when that price is to low he goes for youth. Fuck you wenger, you stubborn cunt! I hope that you come back with an improved offer.

  48. yangkamp10

how the fuck do you get a bid for a player with a minimum release fee rejected?

I mean a world class player from the best footballing nation in the world right now. How do you not bid the price that will get you the player. Who was thinking “lets bid less, they might really want us to have him”?

This club is just a joke – even I have no respect for arsenal anymore.

  49. zeus

Anyone know how much we bid for Mata? So typical ain’t it. If there was a deadline of sorts in his contract, leave it to the cunts Gazidis and Wenger to put in a bid on ‘deadline’ day.

I’m disliking these people more and more everyday.

  50. Wengerssweeties

Its not that confusing, Mata is in his final year of his contract like Nasri.

So a sensible thing to do would be to sell him if they need the money.

Whatever Arsenal offered before it was close because Valencia thought about it.

Personally I think we’re get him.

  51. Dutchman

But with the story from Mata’s dad, you can say that the bullshit story from Balague is bullshit! Valencia has rejected an offer, but mata’s father sounds still positive for a transfer. So everything you read is bullshit. Only his father speaks the truth. Just wait and see.
But be quick, wenger!! We need mata and a few good defenders!

  52. zeus

The way I see it, we might as well as for a player exchange in the Fabregas transfer.

These cunts are so incompetent that it seems the only way we sign a player is if no other clubs wants them or the player is free.

    Fabregas = Mascherano + Thiago + 10m?

  53. incesc

    lol

didnt realise mata is in the last year of his contract,

    its never going to happen.

wenger waited a year for chamakh, he’ll do the same for mata or let him go elsewhere.

he will never pay over the odds.

  54. Dutchman

Yeah wengerssweeties, you are right. Valencia already thought about our bid and we began with a low bid, which of course is normal. So we will bid again and if Valencia already thought about our bid then the next will make them happy. I’m staying positive on this one.

  55. ghoke

Wenger and Gazidis know what they are doing…..they know they are not after him in the first place….so they pretended like they were really after him, when deep inside them, the plot was to let july 31st pass,so they can have the excuse of inflated buy out clause…

    stupid liers.
    biggest scammers on earth

  56. pharo9ja

    balotelli hates everything….
zee,I was talking to gambon(you gkb!)I just had to notice you never have anything original to post. I agree with gambon sometimes but seriously mate, it’s like you owe him a (mafian) favour. quit sucking dick!

  57. yangkamp10

Whether we get Mata or not – and I truly hope we do – our approach to this and every other deal shows how poorly run we are compared to Man U.

We wait till deadline day, we start low. We risk loosing our best chance to nick a quality player before one of the big boys picks up the cent.

  58. incesc

they’ll probably be asking pique and xavi next to lend them some money for cesc…

40 million is a steal for fabregas anyway.

    how much was kaka?

  59. jack

    From onlinegooner

Online Ed: Jagielka and Cahill lined up, better late than never

I am not sure anyone puts too much store in pre-season friendlies, although the weekend’s Emirates Cup did suggest that the team’s ability to throw away winning positions has not been lost in the summer break. Arsenal need to improve at the back as everyone, including the manager, knows.

    Gary Cahill: Deal close
The word is that both Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill will be announced as Arsenal players before the week’s out. That will allow the pair to form some understanding in the final pre-season workout in Lisbon next Saturday. Hardly ideal, but at least preferable to waiting until the team have negotiated a Champions League qualifier. Vermaelen will be moved to left back, where he sometimes played for Ajax, and the first choice defence, in terms of personnel, experience and ability to deal with Premier League opposition, will suddenly look a lot healthier. The club have bargained hard and so had to wait until now before these players can be secured, but at least we know they are ready to go in terms of the Premier League, and one imagines should form a quick understanding. It will also be good to see some more English players in the team. A spirit has been lacking in recent seasons and for me it is interesting that those players which the fans identify as having greater spirit tend to be either British or northern European (I’m thinking Van Persie, Vermaelen, maybe even Szczesny if we draw a line east through Germany). I’m not sure where Nicklas Bendtner fits in there, but he’s on his way, so that’s unlikely to trouble me for long.

There will be other arrivals further up the field. One assumes that Mata will be funded by the Fabregas sale. The Nasri situation rolls on, and it does appear that the club are going to make a stand with this player to send a message to the rest of the squad. They are prepared to take a loss to emphasize that player power is not totally supreme. It’s a decision that will stand or fall on the number 8’s contribution over the course of the campaign. For my money, it would be better to take what Man City are offering and replace him with a player we can get at least three seasons out of. That’s what our scouting network apparently exists for.

As for the attacking side of things, the pre-season games have been encouraging. Arsenal can score plenty of goals over the course of the season, that’s rarely been an issue. If they concede less, then things can improve in terms of achievement and trophies. With Denilson gone and Eboue and Bendtner apprarently close to the exit door, there is at least some moving on of players that have fallen short consistently. Rosicky doesn’t look like he is going anywhere, but you can’t have everything. Almunia hasn’t featured at all pre-season, so one assumes he will be allowed to depart on a free if he can find a club that will match his wages at Arsenal. So expect him to be lining up with the players for the annual squad pic this Thursday then, but only ever again for the first team in the event that the three ahead of him in the pecking order are all crocked. It took Arsene six years to realize what anyone else could have told him after the Man Utd 4-2 home defeat in 2005. He’s paid £6.5 million a year for that insight.

Anyway, he’s got Szczesny now, who will make errors as he learns for himself (he’ll learn little from Gerry Payton), but in the long term may well become an Arsenal great. He will hopefully bite the bullet and realize that quality in defence costs money, and with the two English signings, we have the makings of a vastly improved back four which won’t need the defensive coaching currently unavailable to younger players in the first team squad. The midfield is to be resolved, but there are options. Key is that Song and – presumably – Wilshere in front of the defence improve as a partnership when the team do not have the ball (and are not careless with it). With every season, Wilshere will improve with experience, so hopefully this will happen naturally. In attack there are many options. In the Fabregas position, Nasri and Ramsey are obvious contenders, and there are other players that could be tried there. As so little defensive work is required, then any one from Arshavin, Gervinho or Mata could be tried there. Gervinho looks good so far, let us hope that continues when the real thing begins.

Anyway, at least with the new defensive signings, things are looking up. Djourou, Koscielny and Squillaci have been tried and found wanting, simply not of the requisite quality. I guess only Koscielny cost significant funds, and doubtless both he and Djourou will be called upon at some stage during the season. Still, the Invincibles roster featured one Pascal Cygan, so the perfect squad is not required to achieve perfection…

  60. zeus

As I said earlier. I don’t want money for fab4. The cunts wont spend. Player exchange + cash.

    Thiago and Mascherano.

  61. zeus

    Jagielka and Cahill.

Hahahahaha. Both clubs want what, 17m each per player. Yeah, we will pay that. hahahahaha.

Lol, pretty good choice there. There are some powerhouse midfielders in the french league we should be monitoring. I have to admit I find it annoying when people come up with the bait players as options ALL THE TIME lol. It’s not something I would do as a football manager and evidently Arsene doesn’t either (although he does take it to an extreme)

I agree, there are some vital changes to be made. As for a Nasri/Fabregas replacement, we should make an attempt to sign Gourcuff.

The majority of the news i read from ArseFeeds.com about Arsenal shows negativity. Hopefully and i believe once we come into christmas we should be seeing positive articles!!

As for Barton, I would consider looking past his faults to sign him, as it would be for a good price and we would get a decent passer of the ball with good technique, a good engine and a hard worker, things we need in the team. Much like Flamini, who was more of a box-to-box player if were honest. He was quite bad positionally, but he was pretty fast and covered ground much quicker than Song does.

well, with no additions, we will be fighting for the 4th place trophy, ’2nd to 4th’ is mighty optimistic, given that we have two chav teams to negotiate…

it is really sad that with a little investment we would be serious contenders, all good and proper, ffs!

  71. incesc

after we’ve lost clichy and cesc i reckon we need 5-7 top signings to compete for first.

    a keeper,
    2 centre backs,
    a left back,
a top replacement for denilson and song,
a top class attacking midfielder for cesc
    a top striker.

    if nasri goes a winger,

    8 signings…

    :(

It’s not comforting when you see other teams strengthening only Chelsea haven’t bought anyone so far but they will no doubt after spending £75m in January. For us we fear the worse with Wenger’s frugal dealings and spin.
4 weeks to go tick tock.

That’s a bit negative from me but I still have a bit of hope left.

Geoff exactly mate you should be grateful that we gave you the sixth largest economy ……. …..point is u can’t point the finger in one direction when it comes to current demographics and political schemas…. anyways this is one of the finest English cricket team I have seen it will be a great rivalry cheers… …

PHW speaking to the Daily Star again.

“As Arsene said, we are looking to buy some players but we are not going to do our business in public. They are going to have to be bloody patient – as we are.

“It is frustrating for both the fans and Arsene and the board.

“I don’t listen to the pundits, quite frankly. I am 100 per cent behind Arsene and so are the board. I think he has done fantastically well.”

Hill-Wood was then asked how he’d feel if the Gunners, whose last trophy was the FA Cup in 2005, went another season without silverware.

He replied: “Some people have gone 25 years without a trophy and it is becoming more and more difficult with all the people with unlimited pockets.”

Yeah, and those clubs aren’t fleecing the fans financially at ever turn and mugging us off with pretences of being a big club/title challengers you fucking old cunt.

How the fuck does he, or anyone else for that matter, get away with bad mouthing the paying customer with such regularity?

I fucking loathe Hill-Wood and his kind, i won’t be shedding a fucking tear when he finally shuffles off his mortal coil. I wouldn’t give him the dead skin from my fucking cock, the free loading cunt.

    Hill-Wood –

“People don’t seem to realise that VAT went up so we weren’t trying to make any money out of it.”

Ignoramus, since when did VAT go up by 6.5% you fuckwit, and while we’re on the subject, when was the last time you paid for a ticket you fucking parasite.

Old cunt or not, i’d cross the street to punch this cunt out.
