On the radar...
I needed a Saturday to give me a break from all the fevered transfer speculation.
Yesterday it emerged from make believe land that Gervinho was in talks with Manchester City and Arsenal. Apparently City want to pay €168k a week (I hope some of that can contribute to a new hair cut) and a €17million fee for a player who to me, looks no better than average. How can you compete with that if true?
Well, that’s the point, I’m not sure if it is true. What might be true is that Arsenal are in negotiations with Lille because the BBC said so… they also gave a very strong hint they weren’t lying when they said…
Very Arsenal wouldn’t you say? If we can’t get a player for at least 60% below market rate, generally, we’ll spend our £3million on someone who is 18 years old with a 22% chance of making it.
I feel some form of entitlement to slight French/African’s, much in the same way Barcelona feel entitlement to anyone who plays for Arsenal. If we miss out on Gervinho, some serious questions need to be asked…
Maybe if our midgets played with machete’s against Stoke, we wouldn’t get bullied. Just a thought…
Anyway, at least things are busying along nicely. If we miss out on Gervinho, we have the makings of a pretty good, ‘who we missed out ‘ 2011 squad.
Brad Freidel, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Gervinho!
Marvelous, lets see if we can end the summer with a full squad!
All of this transfer speculation reminds me of when I was a youngster. I remember when I was about 13 years old my mum asked me to come down stairs as I was in trouble. I walked down and saw the phone bill on the table, I knew I’d been busted.
‘Pedro, we know what you’ve been up to. Phoning porn lines is disgusting, especially the amount you’ve been doing it and at times when your grand parents have been round.’
‘Mum, I haven’t been phoning porn lines.’
‘Lying about it will only make it worse, we’ll call them shall we?’
>0906 611 111< Dialed on speaker phone
Loudspeaker: ‘ Welcome to Saturday the 23rd of Junes edition of Clubcall, today Arsenal launched an official bid for Patrick Kluivert…’
I’m not sure which my mum was more disappointed in… sad fact was, in the days of internet dial up, the teletext Clubcall teasers were the only way a man could get hold of some made up transfer gossip. Now you’ve got twitter accounts dedicated to it, it’s staggering the amount of toilet that is spoken on line. We’re all like addicts though, devouring any snippet of information we can get our hands on.
Arsene Wenger has got his hand in the Barcelona sweet jar again, no, I’m not talking about the jar Pep Guardiola keeps in his Seat Leon’s glove compartment, I’m talking about the metaphorical jar called La Masia. He’s in for sweet 16′s Gerard Deulofeu & Xavier Quintilla. Now, I don’t really give two craps about either of them really, what I do care about is there seems to be far more focus on the kids than the seniors. We’re obviously paying someone in Spain to camp out in a high rise apartment block over looking the academy playground which in any other walk of life would probably result in your hard drive being seized.
Not only that, it appears our Chief Scout Steve Rowley has been checking out Oxlade-by-the-power-of-Braveskull-Chamberlain and a 17 year old Nottingham Forest defender called Jamaal Lascelles. That’s a major FFS moment for me. Can we for one second just stop buying up every kid on the planet? It’s ridiculous, if not just for the reason that come the end of the summer when our squad of missed targets is at 52, Wenger will say the players weren’t there to begin with. There isn’t enough focus on digging out players in the right age group. Steve Rowley should be hanging out in proper stadiums, not Championship reserve fields.
One kid that I’m now sold on is Jenkinson. The guy who is part Finish, like my first ever boss, spoke to Arsenal.com yesterday and done himself proud.
“My dad has been a season ticket holder for 40-odd years and has been going regularly since he was a kid.
“He brought me up as an Arsenal fan and I’ve been going since I was young. I even went to a few games last season. My whole family are all massive Arsenal fans.
“I was always a big fan of Tony Adams and I’m reading his book at the moment. He was always someone I looked at as a great leader. He is a player I can learn a lot from and I will be looking to follow in his footsteps.”
Those quotes are superb, if he can match the quality of those quotes to footballing skills, perhaps we have ourselves a bit of a player. It’s nice to finally have a youngster that’s in at the club not banging on about how amazing Arsene Wenger is. Instead, he’s telling us his old man is a season ticket holder and that he’s reading the book where Tony Adam’s messes himself on a bar stool. What a champion first interview. Hopefully he’ll have a bit of Adams about him and the first thing he’ll do is give Diaby a dry slap for his Spurs comments. Some people were saying yesterday his comments were a joke.
Worst joke ever Diaby and that’s coming from me.
I don’t believe for a second the comments were taken out of context. I truly believe he’s agitating for a move. Let him go, he’s part of the deadwood crew. The more we can chop out, the better in my book.
Finally, I’ll leave you with some poignant comments from Robin Van Persie, future captain of the club I feel.
“Every year it always goes wrong in an identical way and that is frustrating,” said Van Persie. “When you look at results in the last years, then Arsenal shouldn’t be talking about winning the league because too many times things have gone wrong.
“Sometimes you have to eat the truth and be realistic. But I do believe with the signing of a number of players, then next season we should be in there competing for prizes.”
Give him the tools Wenger and he will be king!
Right, that’s your lot!
See you in the comments!

bingo Gstar…
so as far i see it, less mistakes in the midfield = less set plays to defend.
gross generalization i know.
So is this rumor on Gary Cahill true that i’m hearing?
PEPE WOULD BE AMAZING AS A PLAYER FOR ARSENAL, HE KNOWS HOW TO DEFEND AND HE DOESN’T GET BULLIED EITHER.
Personally I wouldn’t mind signing Flamini or Diarra back as they know how to fight for the team, their attitude on the pitch is perfect and what we lack.
2 be fair, Walcott and RVP track back, Wilshere covers so much ground, Nasri doesn’t do fuck all really, only when he feels like it, Arshavin recently has improved his defensive side.
Diarra
Nasri Fabregas Wilshere
Arshavin
RVP
………………………………………Szczesny
Sagna………….Cahill…………………………Vermaelen…………..Izaguirre
………………..Fellaini………….Cesc………………Wilshere
…….Nasri……………………..VanPersie………………………Hazard
Trouble is we haven’t had defenders with experience on defending set pieces since Campbell. Even Toure was shit at it.
You don’t have to train denfenders on set pecies if it’s already in their blood.
……..like Cahill’s.
Every signing is a risk but yes our problem is a lack of training and leadership all over the pitch especially at the back.
precicely Gambon, hence I just can’t get excited about defensive signings until the DM slot is sorted.
a Marquee is what it will take to arouse me from the meh funk TBH, purely for its statement of intent really.
yup that gets the blood flowing
And a lack of composure, it’s been quite shocking since the Invincibles disbanded.
Is Izaguirre even good.
Fellaini is slow and fouls too much, although would be an improvement on Song and Diaby.
PEPE would be the best option.
Diaby and Bendtner + 10 Million would be perfect for RM
realistically

disagree on fellaini Gstar, think hes a great invisible wall, he might not be fast but his positioning stamina and mobility compensates IMHO.
he can go missing though.
white sumpremacist!
can’t wait for the next FAMine
If we get Cahill I’d like to add Baines to that defence. I think he has the attributes of a Arsenal player and slightly better at defending then Clichy.
A good Goalkeeper is a must as well as a DM.

Mail on Sunday say Man United’s deal for Phil Jones is off, and suggest Arsenal may join Liverpool in a bidding war now.
YoungGunsBlogJamie Sanderson
Here’s the Mail on Sunday back page: http://t.co/n5fbmD8. I very much doubt Arsenal would go to £22m.
YoungGunsBlogJamie Sanderson
@JSteele786 – Yeah. Man Utd activated a buy out clause in his deal, but Venky’s contest it and won’t sign off the papers.
YoungGunsBlogJamie Sanderson
Background: United and Arsenal activated Jones’ buy out clause by offering over £16.5m. Blackburn’s owners refute the clause and want more.
Looks like Jones isn’t going to united after all
Jack Wilshere is soaking up the rays and recharging the batteries on a sun-kissed beach to recover from a season in which he has emerged as a vital player for the Arsenal. It’s hard to believe the starlet has developed so magnificently for Arsene Wenger’s side in a campaign that promised much but, ultimately, delivered little. And to think last summer there was speculation that AW would allow the midfielder to rejoin Bolton on loan and gain further top flight experience after a spell at the Reebok the season before last.
So what can we expect from Wilshere next season? A season in which the burden of responsibility may weigh even heavier for the England regular given that key players such as Cesc and Samir may be doing a bunk. It seems that silverware are on his mind.
“I’ve still got a lot of work to do,” he admits. “I’m 19, there are good players at Arsenal who want to take my position. So I’ve got to work hard and try to keep myself in every team that I play in. I play at a big club. The expectation level is big. From when I was 16, the expectation has always been high. We are a top-four club and we want to deliver trophies and win every game.
“It has been a crazy year. At the start of the year, there was talk of me going back on loan to Bolton. The manager at Arsenal said he wanted me to play 20-25 games and I’ve played 60 games this year but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I’ve surprised myself, really, but hopefully I can do the same next year.
“I have to get ready for next season and I have to get my feet up. I’ve got four weeks off. I’m going to go away and get on a beach for a couple of weeks and then come back in pre-season rested and ready.”
ANYWAYS, good night everyone.
ps
if only evry1 else has attitude like wilshere and rvp
wilshere playing 60 games and coming out as our best player is a tremendous achievement for hes age
without him it would have been denilson all season.
NIGHT G
AMAZING player…
I’d prefer Banega as our DM
night Gstar
Incesc
I think the problem is Wenger lovs running these kids into the ground.
I definately dont wanna see him play so much next season.
expect cahill to yoonited to kick off in lieu…
Blackburn saw that henderson was sold £20m and thought they’d get more for jones, it’s perfectly natural
gambon.
I agree, hopefully we’re see more of Ramsey next season too. He needs games.
Talksport really do fuck me off something chronic!
Having a right old fucking whinge up about wilshire not being at the u-21′s, becuase shaquiri scored for the swiss… Nothings mentioned about Carroll, just fucking typical northen monkey bullshit aimed at johnny foreigner club arsenal…
Asking what’s more important arsenals tour of asia or the u-21′s for his development..
Fucking dildos don’t realise
a) wilshire is already in the senior squad
b) he’s tired and burnt out now and needed a holiday
Then they are going on about james gucking milners 158 caps for the u21′s like it’s helped him get where he is in the england set up…
oh that’s right he was absolute shite against switzerland at wembley and at the WC… The u21′s inevuiitably mean fuck all.. Just cause england havent a divine right to win tournament they reckons our chances will improve with tournament experience at the youth level…
Yeah, like fucking players like mancienne, henderson, jones
How many u21 caps does gerrard, ferdinand and rooney have?
As far as twitter rumors go, I’m sticking with Young Guns and Goon Blog. It seems like they actually are somewhat in the know and truthful, unlike most the other idiots.
wilshere had to play so much because wenger didnt sign the players last summer to take us forward.
signs are it will happen again next year gambon
imagine if wilshere got injured or wasnt ready what would wenger have done? played diaby? oh no he was injured. Play denilson? fuck
for such an “inteligent guy” its all so fucking dumb
I wouldn’t mind Pepe at Arsenal. No PL experience, but he’s a tough CB, a bit mental too. Good CDM and CB, also a very good man marker if needed
jones was never worth 16m, asking for 22 is taking the piss of epic proportions…
He’s worth 8-10m tops
It is at times like this that Arsenal fans long for former vice-chairman and deal-maker David Dein. The signing of Sol Campbell 10 years ago, on a free transfer but on what was regarded as extortionate
wages at the time of £130,000 a week, was completed despite the doubts of Wenger.
Arsene was very cautious and David was very ambitious for the club,’ said former director Keith
Edelman, managing director at the time. ‘He was very good at getting Arsene into a position where he was comfortable spending money.’ No one at the club seems to have sufficient authority to do that now.

usmanov reads LeGrove. FACT
United are paying Jones 40k a week if they end up signing him. How the fuck does Denilson get that much?
QoS is Usmanov FACT.
you were slagging Dein off a few weeks back WTL so whats it to be?
Kroenke is fucking useless. He just sits, silently, and offers nothing.
Usmanov would’ve been the better choice, even Dein saw that.
Bring back Dein and stick Usmanov on the board
id be happy with just Dein on the board for starters.
I cant remember “slagging him off” lol
I am not in the dein was a miracle worker camp but it doesnt mean I wont post something because it goes against something I think.
Remind me what I said Lurch.

Denilson Eastmond

Rosicky Bendtner Vela
On paper it dont look bad lots of experience and plenty of goals, just a shame they cant play on grass and all the goals are in the wrong end!!!
Seriously though, this lot should raise 40-50m even if they all went and we didnt lose anymore or buy anymore i think we will have improved just by getting rid of the deadwood.

Rest of Squad: Mannone, Shea, Martinez, Miquel, Botelho, Frimpong, Watt, Henderson, Afobe, Aneke, Ozyakup, Sunu, Murphy, Freeman
But if we could add that £50m to the £40m transfer kitty and buy 2 CH, 1 RB,
1 DM, 1 RW and 1 CF without losing Cesc and Nasri then we could allow most of the Rest of the Squad to go on loan, retaining just Martinez and Botelho.

well at least Jenkinson is an “adult”
Usmanov “Clearly the first priority for Arsenal must be to hold on to its star players such as Nasri and Fabregas”.
Usmanov: “In terms of doing things differently, let me give you a very clear example. Arsenal has all of its major commercial contracts coming up for renewal in the next couple of years.
“It is no secret that to maximise the value of those you want to have success on the field and to be winning trophies. To do that you need to invest now in building a winning team.
“This is simple commercial logic. Whether it comes to pass, we shall see.”
HASANYONESIGNEDANYONEWHOISNTAFUCKINGKIDYET??
Amen WTL, (Dein exceptions)
cheeky cunts reeled me in with the ‘european midfielder’ headline as well.
As if he plays in the champions league. pah.
DanKing_NOTW Dan King
#afc fans – stan may be silent, but in tomorrow’s NOTW, Alisher Usmanov speaks. Very frankly.
In terms of doing things differently, let me give you a very clear example. Arsenal has all of its major commercial contracts coming up for renewal in the next couple of years. It is no secret that to maximise the value of those you want to have success on the field and to be winning trophies. To do that you need to invest now in building a winning team.
Clearly an increase in ticket prices of this magnitude is not fair, when combined with the lack of success under current board”
“While I agree with self-sustaining model, do not believe can properly work with debt club carrying..interest bill strips funds every year. That is why I wrote to board & suggested that the rich shareholders should support a rights issue with sole purpose of reducing the debt. The board rejected idea and it is clear their priority was to take money out through selling their shares, and not to put any in
Clearly the first priority for Arsenal must be to hold on to its star players such as Nasri and Fabregas. Cesc is not only one of the best footballers in the world, he is also the captain and leader of the club.”
What is not clear is whether the board shares this view. For too long they have seemed happy to sanction second, third and fourth. Sanction second, third and fourth as being acceptable, whilst at the same time they were planning to sell their shares.”
“I’ve always been clear about my admiration for Arsene, he has managed to create a team that plays most exciting football despite limited resources”.If I had concerns, it is that he’s not been supported enough and too much has been expected of him on his own. Once Arsenal had Dein out there every day living & breathing afc / working closely with Wenger to secure best players.Haven’t had that for 4 yrs”
‘I don’t want to be on the board of a trophyless club’
Usmanov “If the role of a board member is to oversee a trophyless period, while making significant personal profits and asking fans to pay the cost with inflation-busting ticket price increases then, no, I would not want to be on the board.”
Usmanov is saying EXACTLY what the fans want to hear…It does sound a little too good to be true to be honest! BUT, I’d still prefer him to silent Stan…With Usmanov we are guaranteed a change…And some trophies…I hope
Anyways I’m off guy’s!
Night night and see you all tomorrow
Great post as per usual Geoff/Pedro btw
Amazing job your doing here!
Gooby – Sorry fella, but i can’t get excited about a player who’s only managed NINE games for CHARLTON ffs, and nine games by the time he’s fecking 19!!
shotgun to the face.
argue with a billionaire rapist at your peril.
question now is, how does this attack to the boards credibility serve arsenal?
does it not serve up more instability when we need it most to usher in new talent?
could be an own goal….
£20m price tag on Sturridge? surely we have to get £50 for Cesc
Lurch -
Those that dont want him will never want him, as todays posts clearly show. Even if he were to be silent for the next ten years people still wouldnt want him, they are entrenched in their views. That nimby mentality that they have was spawned even before he opened his mouth. PHW gave the sheep their cue and they ran with it, good for them.
In the extracts I posted he reafirms everything I have said about the old board pilling up the cash within the club and then selling their shares and taking the money and running. Whatever way you look at it, its a fact, something his critics never admit to although they think he is the antichrist.
At this point he has very little cards to play to exert pressure but the timing of this is perfect in terms of the sentiment of the fans. Think back to when PHW made his comments, if I told you that the fan base would be split about wether he should own the club you would think I was mad.
Gazidis now also has to face questions put to him from quotes directly from this on Monday, once again great timing.
I am of the opinion that this is Arsene last season. It may very well be a short stint as owner for Stan because his timing has been very poor. Although we are not in the doom scenario thats being painted, the whole situation could become very bad next year.
As I said earlier, we are actually lucky to have this guy saying it like it is. Tomorrow morning there will be some uncomfortable people eating their cherrios on both sides of the atlantic, considering how comfy they have been and how detached from the sentiment of the fans they seem, it can only be a good thing.
Abou Diaby is likely to miss the start of the season. The France midfielder will undergo surgery next week to cure a persistent ankle problem that bothered him in the second half of last season.
**** Breaking News **** Abou Diaby is likely to miss the start of the new season, as he is scheduled to undergo surgery to cure his persistent laziness, his overwhelming cuntiness, his lack of intelligence and his shocking fucking attitude!
YoungGunsBlog Jamie Sanderson
The more you read of Usmanov’s quotes, the more it quickly becomes obvious his comments are the work of a PR man, not him.
Hope he’s just undergoing some illegal experiments which include fusing his DNA with Vieira’s and coming back a much better player…without his Spurs shirt
couldn’t agree more WTL,
But it won’t take a massive strategic act to swat most of AU’s dispersions aside during the Q&A.
the timing of the Q&A at the beginning of the window essentially allows the club to maintain their existing ‘party’ line for the sake of our ability to compete in the window, claim poverty etc…
Gadzidis will be able to absorb most of AU’s conspiracy by expounding on the FFP regulations and the ‘arsenal’ way of doing things and the sheep will just fall back in line.
The best way to shut AU up would be to just appoint DD as an executive before the Q&A and steal most of his ammunition with the fan base.
Whilst its perfect timing I’m not sure it will contribute to this window’s activity a great deal, if anything it might hinder it.
Pat its naive to think AU writes his own press releases.
you really expect him to write his own press releases as well as running a global empire?
not sure euthanasia’s legal in france DDM
Lurch -
It wont hinder IMHO, Twitter was invented for footballers, its about as much as they can read wihout getting bored. The news of the world to a footballer is the same as war and peace to a normal human.
Look at the post above, the bullshit starts already LOL.
I actually think young guns do a great job but over the years they have been as responsible as anyone for building up a false expectation of what our youths will contribute.
haha yeah i was thinking of the irony when I saw Sanderson tearing tweeters down today for spreading false hope!
besides im not going to criticise the intelligence of footballers on a football blog, seems counter-intuitive but I would say its more their agents that digest the actions behind the scenes (and how their interpreted by the customer base) and its they who modulate the information their clients need to know to feather their own nest.
thats fair enough.
I am happy that AU has said it, lets be honest the way this window is going it would be hard to blame him regardless of how bad it gets.
I’d be happy if he went as far wrestling control of the club away from Kroenke TBH
I read that article Rohan posted today and I’ve read Craig Gordon’s pieces in the past.
Nobody’s money is clean, nobody.
Playing devils advocate I’d suggest that AU’s money is possibly cleaner than most – given his rise over the last 25 years in a time of pervasive media and never before heralded freedom of speech, that the best his detractors can muster is an alleged rape conviction and connection to heroin traffickers. None of which can be proven.
Ok, one may suspect his motives behind acquiring us are driven by desires for political ‘safety’ in a global marketplace, but as far as I see it that’s a good a thing because its a relationship of mutual benefit.
My biggest concern is the walking coronary he represents, although sifting through images of him online it seems he’s lost a load of weight recently. Dying suddenly without strategy doesn’t usually do companies that are wholly owned much good if they run at a debt.
.

You crack me up mate, honestly I agree with everything you say I even thought about him dropping dead with a big mac in one hand and kfc bucket in the other before. I figure he must have great doctors and worst case he can always have a heart transplant from Diaby.
Its funny because I would bet my bottom dollar there would be a correlation between those that dont want him and those that would never want to see Arsene sacked. These same people, regardless of if we finished 8th or the pope came out and said AU was the reincarnation of Jesus, would still feel he same way.
Some people will never admit they are wrong about anything, not that this is or ever will be proven either way. In light of evidence that proves that they were wrong I have seen people still defend Senderos, Clichy and Denilson to name but a few TO THE DEATH.
If Kim Kardashian released the Usmanov rape video tomorrow I would hold my hands up and say its in no doubt however if it came to light that Usmanovs penis was removed at birth people would come on here and say
“Well he could have fisted her”
hahahahaha
touche
you make a good point about the correlation of Arsene’s shelf life and takeover. They’re definitely on the same shelf if not in the same box.
I’d also say fatists would have a problem with AU & sacking AW and we all know their far worse than racists, which is strange especially when fatties are excellent consumers? and good for profit? bigger shirt sales etc…
shit that makes Keyser a walking paradox! maybe hes just a hypocrite?
fear is the mind killer, fear of getting something wrong has become the biggest bugbear…
folks have invested soooooo much into AW as an individual that to change their opinion on that individual is likened to a small internal death. Whereas it should just be cast off like benign tumour.
shit did i mention cancer
laters WTL
pleasure as always

Spot on mate on both counts.
The fear is apparent.
Regardless of us all being supporters I get the feeling that some people if they were told we could change manager tomorrow and be nailed on to win the league, they would still choose the option of Arsene.
Its strange.

Lurch I feel your dads pain, this countries most shameful moment when that fat cunt Soames sold your country out to the mob. Shameful.
I visited that country when it was green and prosperous, I flew over it two years after mad Mugabe got power and it was brown and ruined.
He went from being a very poor man to the 8th richest in the world, go work that one out, and all we are concerned about is Libya. Go figure. Oh and his best mate happens to run Libya.
Thatcher’s worst moment and I apologise on behalf of Great Britain.
Morning Geoff…
Morning Surfer, I am on for another 10 minutes then I have to work, still no transfer news, ho hum.
Work on a Sunday? Don’t you mean church? :p
Nice piece of analysis at the Republika of Mancunia. Out of all the non-AFC blogs out there, thats by far the best I think.

Puts it all into context really…
One thing that Usmanov said can’t be argued
No wonder they turned down the shares proposal when they were planning to sell their shares
Now, was that for the good of the club or for the good of themselves?
Roll on 2013 Roll on usmanov
Would anyone fancy Daniel sturridge this summer
Young but ready IMO and also a gooner
Think he could be a 20 goal a season striker already
i’d take him Pat, he reminds me of our very own Wrighty. chelsea would never sell though in reality. Didn’t realise mata is at u21 champs…looking forward to watching him.
what are this morning rumours then? any new names? it gets boring being linked with the same old dross….we need wenger to get his transfer policy under way and get creative….along the lines of sagna…eduardo…..verminator
I am not sure Kingsley
The chavs have brought in Torres, and are now looking at Neymar and Lukaku
Pushes Sturridge down the order a bit and I think he is the kind of player that wants to be playing football and is not just just content to earn money sitting on the bench.
Kingsley we are signing:
Samba
Cahill
Baines
Lassana Diarra
Hazard
Gervinho
Fernando Llorente
hello guys em arsene wenger i have managed to make arsenal fc into a successfull youth academy i will be bzy in the transfer market as i would bring in average french players for 0.5 million i hope they wont ask for 20 k a week o wait i toatlly forgot its my pocket money from which i need to pay i will pay him 5 k a week then i wil come out every season saying we have qulaity in our squad my main aim is to make sure arsenal never win a trophy again last time i checked i am bigger than the club what a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good shout Patt, he’s a good player but would probably draw the ire of those that look at age rather than ability.
G star u heard the ribery rumours? bendy and clichy going to munich……………
Daniel Sturridge is a good player. I think he has great chances of becoming a lot better in the future and he has the PL experience, so yes – i would fancy seeing him in a Arsenal shirt.
The quotes from Usmanov seems very pr-minded, but still the views are absolutely spot on. I think we would see a much bigger interest in fighting with Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City if he was in control of the club. I prefer the model the club has today, but it’s becoming more and more clear that things are going in the wrong direction.
Mr. Wenger made good choices in the beginning after the move to the Emirates. He went for the younger players, nurtured them into stars and made sure the economic part was under control. Thats the correct start after the move. The squad was very young and things were looking very positive. We had a few years to stand back and let United, Chelsea and City splash their money when we were building a new team with our youngsters. The problem for the last years has been that the money now seems to be there. We still have a young squad and the team is very good, but last summer especially should have been the summer where we for example had signed older players with PL experience to help the youngsters already in our team grow even more. Imagine if we had signed PL experienced players like for example Ashley Young, Arteta, Gary Cahill etc etc. I’m not saying those players would have been the ones we would have needed, but its just an example of what kind of players we should have bought – players who knows what PL is about. If you look at Man Utd and Chelsea they have always had a strong quality of UK based players in their squad. Like John Terry, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand etc. We need that kind of players, and mix them in together with Fabregas, Nasri, van Persie and Walcott. That would give the squad a lot more qualiy.
And when we already have great players like Nasri, Fabregas and Walcott in the team and while we are doing very good in the league and in the cups we just have to add with a few number of players. We’re not missing much to be all in for the title fight. While the squad is strong and young we could have made a big improvement if we signed just one expensive PL experienced player each summer. Imagine we bought (example) Ashley Young last summer. We had bought Gary Cahill this summer. Next summer we buy another one. The team is young, we have time on our side and for each summer Fabregas, Walcott and Nasri gets older. To get the money to buy one experienced player each player wouldnt have been that much and would have been easy for us to defend.
That’s the way i was expecting Wenger to go for when we started to rebuild our team after around 2005. Instead we have just continued with buying only youth and added some older players with more experience from abroad which hasent really given us that much. Arshavin, Chamakh, Squilaci. Good players, but still i bealive players like Ashley Young and Gary Cahill for example would have given us a lot more stability and more general quality instead of quality and fantastic games now and then.
This summer i feel our club is left behind with a lot of players which clearly isnt good enough anymore or they want to leave/might leave. We can loose two of our biggest players in Fabregas and Nasri. It would cost so much money to replace them we the same quality.
If we loose both Fabregas and Nasri i bealive we should should make major changes. Then i would prefer us moving back to 4-4-2 formation. Give van Persie much more help up front.
If we keep them both, continue with the Barcelona-style-tactic. But then we would need players who are quick. Which has quick speed, movement and great passing skills. We cant have players like Diaby in midfield who uses too long and is too slow.
This summer i feel we really should re-shape our squad. Make sure to get rid of players who clearly doesnt have the right quality for our club. I can understand if Fabregas leaves (if it’s for Barca and back to his home), but still we need to do everything we can to keep him. we also gotta do all we can to keep Nasri.
other than that i think we should get rid of players like Almunia, Clichy, Squillaci, Traore, Diaby, Rosicky, Denilson, Bendtner. They have had their good games and they are good players, but i dont feel they have the real Arsenal quality anymore. Bring in more fresh faces to give the squad a big refreshment. Players like Gary Cahill, Samba, Leighton Baines. I feel that kind of players would be players who could help us now and add to the already strong mix in our squad. If we do that now we can get a great squad next year and the years after that. If not, i feel we are in danger of falling too far behind and it would be a lot more difficult to get back on level of Man City, United and Chelsea.
You saw Liverpool got problems last years, and they started to get a average squad then with a lot of players which dident really have the real quality they should have had to fight in the top. We are in danger of ending up at the same place. Liverpool has seen the problem and has started to get rid of players which isnt good enough now and replacing them with players who has PL experience like Jordan Henderson. It’s about time we do the same thing before we loose the stars we have.
do u guys think there is any chance we could get cahill, samba and baines….all 3?
A chance yes, in that we could afford all 3, but I’d say unlikely.
…if Clichy is leaving then Arsenal shouldn’t replace him, but should instead upgrade. Clichy is Arsenal’s 11th best player in aerial duels and teams know that so they target him there. Last season he was basically 50-50 in aerial challenges. There’s also a small problem with the fact that he gets forward so much and yet he completes less than 1 cross per game. That said, defensively, he is Arsenal’s most prolific tackler at 3.4 per game and tops the list in terms of interceptions with 3.2 per game. He also only gives away one foul per game.
There’s some speculation that if Clichy leaves Arsenal have targeted Leighton Baines as his replacement, which I thought was strange at first. But when you look at the season he’s had, 5 goals, 11 assists, passing rate of 80%, and winning 63% of headers you can see why Arsenal might be interested. To put that season in perspective, Andrei Arshavin had 6 goals and 11 assists and he’s an Arsenal forward and Arsenal’s best crosser of the ball. Baines’ assists ratio is no fluke either: he had 8 last year and 6 the year before. He’s getting better every season.
Baines excels at crossing the ball, putting in three successful per game, and in key passes putting in 1.95 per game. That key passing rate is second on Everton and if he managed that number at Arsenal, he would have been second at Arsenal as well, above Nasri. Defensively, he’s 5th on Everton in tackles at 2.2 per game, but only Fellaini makes more than 2 tackles per game for them which I find odd. Clearances are similar, with both players 5th on their team in that category, but Clichy called on almost double the number of times that Baines is.

Queen of suburbia
Just seen the Usmanov criticism of the Board – for being tight wads! Why doesn’t he GIVE the club some cash, maybe match the spend ie double the amount available?
The team needs an injection of good players, experienced players with pedigree and hunger.
The Board are as mean as Shylock! The only difference is they don’t even want to pay for their pound of flesh. Actually they don’t seem to want any flesh – except young flesh. Not good that, smacks of perversion!
Come on Alish splash the cash!
I’ve no problem with the club buying in young players
