Almunia spotted in Ibiza | Neymar / Hazard should be on agenda

May 31, 2011

20110530-175045.jpg

So… There I am, cutting some shapes in Ibiza and in rolls Mr Almunia, minus his stupid cat dog. He was pretty upset about his poor form this year but as long as he has a bottle of bleach and some accepting friends, he’s happy.

Farewell sir… It’s been painful.

News filtered through that Tom Cruise had been told he was surplus to requirements, I can imagine he’s going through a cocktail of emotions right now but if I’m being frank, winning a contract was always going to be mission impossible as he was hardly a top gun…still, hopefully another club will show him the money elsewhere.

I’m sat here taking in your applause before I move onto the next paragraph.

In other news, Sportingo, the site famous for headlines like…

‘Jeepers creepers, surely Arsenal wouldn’t spend £50million on this man’

… Have reemerged with a rumour that Roma are interested in taking on Clichy in a swap deal for Di Rossi. Now as much as I like swap deals, I really do struggle to see Arsene pulling off something as ambitious as that, or Roma agreeing to it.

I do get agitated that so many poor websites profit from
desperate football fans seeking out transfer news. I wouldn’t mind if they were providing top match reports and opinion during the season but half these sites on pop up only for the summer…

I read that Monaco found themselves relegated, what a fall from grace eh? One moment they’re sunning themselves in the Champions League final, then they sell Adebayor and it all goes tits up. Bad luck, I’ll miss them, but their spirit will live on in our away kit.

The transfer window opens tomorrow night from midnight and hopefully this will be an exciting one. Geoff referred to Neymar and Hazard and I can’t help but wish we’d go in for one of them,

They’re both incredibly talented, they both have consistency, achievement and youth on their side and I can’t help but think players like them don’t come around so often, if they cost £25mill now, there is a good chance that in 2 seasons time they’ll be worth double.

For me, they could be the catalyst for great things. Maradona was that man for Napoli, Eric Cantona moving to United sparked their revolution and more recently Barca took a punt on a man called Ronaldinho who brought back the glory days.

Wenger knows Hazard is a massive talent, he’s said so, if he’s available, we should be in for him. The same with Neymar. We either have the clout to compete with Chelsea like Wenger said last summer, or he’s lying…we need to make a signing of intent… A new Bergkamp for a stagnant side.

Well, we have 6 weeks to make that move.

Who has the faith?

Finally Wenger lets Randall go, could he at last have seen the light?

May 30, 2011

So news today is that our leader has finally realised what we all did 5 years ago that Mark Randall will never make the big time with Arsenal.

Why oh why did it take that long to work out boss?

Now please understand that like many other young men at our club Mark is a decent lad, but like so many of our loanees, he will clearly never be a first team player and all I have ever said is why keep him, it’s cruel, good luck son, I hope someone like West Ham gobble you up and you have a long and fruitful future in professional football.

In other news Stan has given shareholders 14 days to cash in their shares or he withdraws his offer, thanks Stan, I may just sell mine to Usmanov for 50% more than you are offering, as unlike the board of Arsenal, I know what a bargain really is. Ha, ha!

I wonder if Wenger will surprise us all and splash out on Neymar, the Brazilian wonder kid, that would be neat, lose one Brazilian and buy another, talking of our Brazilian, we’ll see how much his project youth kids are really worth when we finally get shot of him, £3.8mil to buy, plus what he’s cost us and I reckon we’ll need £15mil just to cover our costs, we’ll be lucky to get a third of that, so I’ll have money he’ll be an undisclosed fee job!

What I did find amazing was on Saturday Barca won the European cup without Puyol (notwithstanding the last 5 minutes) They didn’t need their defence, that will tell you something, the whole team get back and defend, there are so many things you can learn from their set up, but first of all you can’t have any weak links, and we have a few.

Aaron Ramsey seems to think we’ll spend big, I hope he’s right, watching him in the useless ‘other nations cup’ the other night we could sure do with playing him a bit more this coming season, maybe he will, who knows, but if Frimpong really does turn out for Ghana, he’s another we will lose at ACN time, so relying on him to replace Song won’t be a smart move, we really do need to sign a DM for sure this summer.

Talking of Song he says we need to be tougher against weaker opposition, no sh*t Sherlock, was that the problem then? I see the real issue as we aren’t good enough against weaker opposition because we have too many players in the comfort zone, you mate being one of them.

We aren’t letting Vela go to the Copa America, why? It may be the poor sods only chance to show anyone how good he really is, or isn’t. I would let him go or sell him on. Not letting him go is petty in my book, I would love to know what pissed Wenger off with Carlos, it can’t be the hooker story can it, after all, pot and kettle!

Well by my reckoning the summer begins on Wednesday (June 1st) so buckle up Grovers and get ready for the ride of your life, are you listening Arsene!

Gameiro or Falcao? Shopping in Primark and not the Nike store for trainers, that’s the difference.

May 29, 2011

Now I know I ran a post this week on not signing someone called Kevin but honestly, he would be no good for us as he shoots too much and doesn’t like to pass the ball into the net. I like him, I think he looks sharp as I do Falcao, but…

Falcao is another short striker but more a sniffer, the fox in the box type that Eduardo was, they both have their good points but let’s not forget they are both playing in weak leagues. So what would happen if they played in the Premiership?

Just like Chamakh and Koscielny did eh, so if I had a choice I think I would prefer a EPL quality striker, but to be honest I can’t think who, and it now looks like Benzema is staying put so we have to widen the net.

I thought the Online Gooner wrote a fantastic spoof piece yesterday but I wonder how many muppets from other places didn’t see the irony in it, hats off to them for saying what we all feel and I often say!

The mail says we have offered £8 mil for Samba and I can believe that, why would Wenger need to spend decent money on a player if teams like Blackburn give their top players away for nothing. If it were true that we offered £7mil for Benzema, you can see where next season is going, then the mad one would say next February, ‘I bid for Benzema and Samba but we couldn’t make it happen so I went back into the French league, I have to admit I heard a nasty rumour someone was speaking to Jack and Theo in English, and it wasn’t Gibbs, so I decided to act’

Other hot rumours are Hazard and Gervinho from Lille in a double bubble swoop, now Hazard I know, but Gervinho is from the Ivory coast, same place as Eboue, Wenger wouldn’t be stupid enough to sign an African in ACN year though would he?… Yeah, actually he would!

No offence to our African readers but we can’t afford to lose 3 players at the business end of the season, that is madness!

So several options there and most of them involve buying from the French league again, has he learned? Doesn’t look like it does it? But In Arsene we must trust because we have no choice.

I hate reading that we must sell Arshavin to fund signing anyone, why don’t they just stop this nonsense, we have tons of money, spend it Arsenal or risk another season of nothing.

A last word must go to Barca and how they managed to pass backwards and forwards to the same people and yet mesmerise so called great footballers, the big difference though is at the end, they sling it in to the forwards and shoot, do that enough and a few will go in, the best bit was watching fat boy bitch about everything and Giggs appealing for a penalty as if butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth.

Wasn’t it also great to see Messi play with a smile on his face?

And I bet the Camp Nou isn’t a shrine to Guardiola, I wouldn’t say no if he came knocking though, nice guy, always looks like he enjoys it, very humble and ruthless, I’d have him in a heartbeat!

Have a great day Grovers, tomorrow you get Pedro back!

Time for a clear out Arsene, cut the wage bill and release some funds.

May 28, 2011

We are being understandably linked with anyone that has a pair of boots and is better than Denilson, which as you can imagine is quite a lot of people right now.

I know who I would like and that list includes Hazard, Benzema and Cahill but realistically we won’t get who we want but I would settle on Young, Falcao and Samba, so there are lots of options for our manager to get stuck into out there.

Today though, I want to concentrate on the deadwood, and by that I don’t want to slag anyone off, I want to be brutally honest and look at players that either haven’t a hope in hell of becoming an Arsenal regular or just are not good enough period, we need Arsene Wenger to become ruthless once again, like he was when he broke up the invincibles and began project youth.

Young guns like Hoyte, Eastmond, Randall and Murphy, they will never become first teamers and as with Jay Simpson before them I think it is cruel to keep them hanging around and going out on loan, when he has no intention of ever using them.

Older players like Eboue, Bendtner, Denilson and Diaby who although have some undoubted talent, have had too many opportunities in this team and failed miserably, time to go.

And players like Almunia and Squillaci who are just rubbish and should be let go with immediate effect.

Then we have the up and coming players like Miquel and Bartley who in my book should join the squad but players like JET who have failed to impress be let go, I mean this is the kid that has a hugely expensive car in a Maclaren so at his age, what has he got to prove? He had a chance this season but hasn’t taken it, do we want a guy with an attitude like that or do we want a scrapper, you know like a Keown, Parlour or Adams.

I know what I would prefer, so for me the first thing Wenger should do is have a massive, massive clear out, be honest and get rid of the kids that will never happen.

Players like Vela who I feel have never been given a chance should be allowed to leave, what’s the point in keeping them if we have no intentions of playing them, and this was after 3 years on loan, how come the Mancs get Hernandez and he goes straight into the team?

Anyway, whilst the Mancs are concentrating on getting hammered by Barca, we should be out there shopping, get our chequebook out Arsene, get rid of the no hopers and save a fortune.

Have a great day grovers, enjoy the golf, there’s nothing else on, unless of course you like F1!

Jack Wilshere? What does he play Football manager or something, what does he know?

May 27, 2011

I thought it was amazing to read the comments made by young Jack Wilshere and the advice he is giving to the Mancs about the CL final.

He says you have to defend or you won’t get near them and you have to get in their faces and shut them down, now when I said that in my post the day we played Barcelona, a few people asked me if I played football manager, and did I know more than Wenger, well Jack seems to agree with me, in fact I would say play that way against West Brom as well, all the great teams do which is strange that our manager, who is a real manager (not one that plays like I do) doesn’t see that.

Oh well, we aren’t in the final so it doesn’t matter, Jack said had we not had RVP sent off that was it, well he obviously couldn’t say ‘oh and the Bendtner miss’ as well but hey ho, such is life.

I would like to thank the two observant bloggers yesterday that pointed out to me that French Kevin doesn’t in fact play for Leyton Orient, but plays for a team in France with a similar name, thanks chaps, that would explain why I didn’t see him when we played them twice in the FA Cup, what a silly Billy I am!

I got to thinking yesterday what happens if we don’t sign Benzema for £7mil? Can you believe that story! What should we do, well Chamakh if he stays will be a better player, well he can’t be worse can he? So if we get rid of Bendtner we will have some money so I would get someone to play right wing, and I mean a real winger, and buy a Young or a Hazard and play them wide left and put Theo up front with Robin or Chamakh and go back to playing 4-4-2.

I think it’s time to try Theo up front, he isn’t a winger and if we got a winger we could open up defences more often.

Back to jack’s point about defending, it’s quite funny when your own star player is saying we are crap at defending isn’t it, so we have him telling Wenger that, Denilson saying he wants out because we win nothing and he came to Arsenal to win, Nasri and Clichy refusing to sign contracts, Cesc wanting to play for Barcelona, Wenger really does have a happy team spirit going on there doesn’t he, I wonder if he’ll take note from any of them?

DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH GROVERS!

So with Pat Evra telling Nasri that he should join the Mancs as they are guaranteed a title every year and he’s lost count of how many he has won, Arsene Wenger strikes back with the signings of Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin, way to go Arsene two 16 year olds!

That’ll make Samir Nasri’s mind up won’t it!

Has he learned nothing? We sign two Barca graduates who we will persevere with for 8 years and when they get to being good they suddenly discover they have Barca DNA and want to leave, so we take the pain and they get the gain, no wonder we get them so easily, we are a nursery for Barcelona, they must be laughing themselves silly, we train them and give them plenty of playing time whilst watching them cost us the odd point, then if they are any good they scoop them up ready made, if not they go to Athletico Madrid, what a twit you are Mr Wenger.

Einstein said something about making the same mistake over didn’t he?

I just read that we may be losing Lansbury because Wenger won’t give him assurances he’ll feature next season, I bet he gave Song, Denilson, Bendtner and all his foreign boys assurances though didn’t he!

Have a great day grovers, maybe today we’ll get some good news!

Please don’t sign someone called Kevin, but someone called Carol will do very nicely Arsene!

May 26, 2011

Yesterday was a post born out of years of frustration, today is one born more from hope and expectation. Rumours that we are back in to Leyton Orient for Kevin Gameiro and some freebie have to be wide of the mark, even our manager wouldn’t be so daft as to not learn from his bargain basement failure buys from the French leagues, surely not?

However the Karim Benzema stories will not go away, getting him would be perfect, he is just what we need, another Thierry henry for me and at a good price.

If we sell some of the deadwood I mentioned yesterday we could pay for him with what we raise, smart business, add to that a centreback and a solid DM with wingers Hazard or Young and I think we could win the league.

As we could have this season had he done this last!

Someone suggested I was crying out for Chezzer yesteday and moaned when he and Koscielny screwed up at Wembley, true I did, but I was crying out for Chezzer as opposed to playing either of the other two, I still like him a lot, what this guy failed to mention is I said I would sooner watch Chezzer making mistakes than Almunia or Fabianski, the same holds true now, but you can’t get away from the fact he did screw up at the cup final, me, I would keep him in goal because I beleive he will become the best keeper of his generation, so I’m not looking for a keeper. Keep Chezzer between the sticks.

What is clear is we do need players in the above spots and if Clichy is holding back then sell him and get in a left back that can defend, in the Winterburn and Sansom mould, not in the flying Clichy one, let’s get back to defending.

Verthongen would be another useful signing but I still believe we need a monster at the back to partner Vermaelen, with Kozzer and Djourou as back ups.

Another rumour is we are looking to bring back Paddy as a coach, perfect Arsene if it’s true, he is a leader and would make sure this team went out like warriors.

Usmanov buying up shares is about as useful as a Ryan Giggs injunction, what’s the point? However, I do like the fact that the message he’s sending out is Kroenke won’t have it all his own way, well done that man!

I was thinking about our young DM’s and who could fill that spot if we don’t buy Mascerano (yes my choice), we have Coquelin and Frimpong, both I rate but Coquelin is more the Makelele type for me, we also have Ramsey and Lansbury, now I’m not sure whether or not they are DM’s but they would both battle more than what we have and both are more talented, so maybe we could get away with them for competition to Song, allowing us to spend big on a winger, a centre back and Benzema, what is key though is we keep Nasri.

If Cesc wants out then let him go but replace him with the money, maybe a German Sweinsteiger, Ozil or even bald Wesley from Milan, and talking of him we could do a swap for Song. (I know they don’t play in the same positions)

If we had some of the above they would be young, keeping in with Wenger’s obsession, ball players and mobile so we would still have the bits that the manager demands, with the bits the fans demand, and someone like Paddy to kick their arses into shape, who knows, I may even get my season tickets back!

Have a great day Grovers, I have a feeling we’ll be doing some early doors horse trading, and this time we can really take steps to improve our team for the first time since 2004.

We won nothing and finished 4th so what’s the difference between me and Wenger?

May 25, 2011

About £7 million a year, because I said that without signing decent players and buying cheap unproven French players instead, that’s what would happen. And I was right, so when people ask me if I could manage Arsenal better, the answer is well I couldn’t do worse could I?

Thing is this whole project youth thing he’s been on is a compulsive, obsessive and frankly stupid trip from start to finish, 2 seasons ago after he cynically subbed the sub, Eboue, and I say cynical because the crowd were about to get on his back, so he sacrificed the sub, by subbing him and allowing him to do footballs longest walk, he got him booed and saved himself. That is a fact.

Then the day after I wrote a post about the Emperors clothes, something that I have to say has been used by several national newspapers many times since, when I said it though it upset many people. What? How can you say that about the man that made Arsenal what it is today.

Since the debacle that has been this season, I am no longer in the minority, am I glad though? Am I hell, I am an Arsenal fan and I hate to see my team play like they are right now. We used to be called the best footballing side in the EPL, not any longer, now we are the laughing stock of the EPL. Not for our football and our recent results, but for our leaders bizarre comments.

Our manager got us drawn against Barca because he fielded weakened sides in our group, then guess what? We got knocked out, then we lost the Carling Cup, why? Because we had a kid in goal and a cheap import in defence, now we are fighting to hold on to our best players, why? Is that my fault?

No, it’s because ambitious players want to win silverware and if I were Cesc or Nasri, I would have been horrified when we signed Chamakh on a free, Squillaci from Seville and Koscielny from a French club I have never seen and nor I suspect had Wenger. I bet Grimandi recommended and Wenger bought on that recommendation.

He said mid season this was his best ever squad, what a ridiculous comment! I think he was great when he spent proper money, now he’s lost it and I have had it, I want my team back.

I hear rumours about Downing and Parker, Parker was a player we should have signed years ago, now he’s the wrong age and probably injury prone, Downing was never good enough and never will be, but compared to say Hazard or Young represents another cheap option, has this man learned nothing?

Arsene if you are reading, go out and buy some decent players, choose from Hazard, Young, Samba, Sackho, Cahill plus a world class DM and a goalscorer, that’s what we need, you don’t need to spend £50 mil on a player that is a stupid thing to say, you won’t even get that for your love child.

Time to wise up and get your cheque book out or time to go somewhere else. Time to put the fans first and your project in the bin, it hasn’t worked, one more season with these players will do nothing, you can’t improve pace, intelligence or guts.

That twit Denilson has played over 160 Premiership games for us and is useless, you have continued to play him even though everyone else thinks he’s crap, now even he has turned on you, open your eyes. It’s beyond stubborn now, it’s become odd, very, very odd.

Here’s a list of players that need to go, if they are as great as you say they are we would raise some serious cash. Almunia, Eboue, Clichy, Denilson, Rosicky, Squillaci, Denilson, Bendtner and at least 80% the kids you have out on loan, they’ll never make it. And stick Song, Koscielny and Chamakh on notice.

Gone are the days when we can let a player bed in the EPL for a year, good players rarely need that.

That’s it, have a great day Grovers, in a few days the window will open, lets just hope that this team is strengthened properly, we’ve waited long enough and Arsene, you have run out of excuses, because of you we are now the laughing stock, the team all the other fans laugh at, you seem to be able to screw up year in, year out and account to no one, but you know what? You account to us and one day you’ll be found out and moved on, don’t ruin your legacy, change now, project youth is dead.

Scott Parker move imminent? | Two to leave… | Ryan Gaggs exposed | Jack Wilshere update

May 24, 2011

Scott Parker would be nice, but let’s not kid ourselves he’s the answer. For me, he’s corrective eye surgery when you’ve got a face like Micky Rourke. I like his fighting spirit, I like that he’s got it all to prove again and I like that there will be no doubt when it comes to him being injured. He’ll play through the pain barrier and he’ll earn his money.

I’m kind of hoping his experience could push this team of young pretenders on like Edgar Davids did for Spurs back in 2006 when they nearly toppled us in the league but for a dodgy lasagna. If it’s a case of Denilson out and Scott Parker in… I’m game all the way. Although I do expect more additions.

One player I’ve been reading great things about is Rio Mavuba of Lille. Why do I suggest such a player? Well, Lille winning the French league is a little like Stoke winning the league over here. You’d applaud it but then fear for them as all their best players would be snapped in an instant. Rory Delap would be off to Barca, Shawcross to Milan and Etherington to LA Galaxy. Well, this is an outcome Lille will be expecting this summer. Mavuba was born at sea and as far as I know, the sea doesn’t have a national team, so internationals wont be a problem… I jest of course… he is Congolese-Angolan with a French passport (Wenger nationality porn). He’s capped at international level and he’s played some exceptional football this year.

His Father was known as the Black Sorcerer and as far as I’m concerned… that’s a good enough reason to earn a move to Arsenal .

Anyway, it’s always worth checking out a cheap defensive midfielder who specialises in playing in an attacking team with an excellent defence. He’s agile and fast… not to mention well-traveled, a failed stint in Spain will bode well for his hunger to prove people wrong.

Rumours about Alvarez don’t seem to want to disappear. He’s a free transfer and he has an Italian passport. Oh, and did I mention he’s had serious injury problems and he’s not really a conventional wide man? Perfect match… send him over, he and Theo can have 30 games each and sulk on the team bus about never getting the chance to play down the middle.

Still, all of this excitement will mean nothing if we lose Denilson in Bendtner. I mean honestly, how will we cope? Team douche leaving is going to be tough on all of us…

Jokes aside, Milan are said to be lining up a large bid for Samir Nasri and Cesc is said to be looking at a seat driving for the new Seat F1 team next season. We could find ourselves in a real pickle if we don’t sort out the futures of our two best players sharpish. If they do decide to leave, at least we can be assured of a large transfer surplus early on… 1-0 to the accounts team.

If however, we do manage to keep those players and Arsene Wenger does decide he’d like to show us the way with buying some mature players, I’ve no doubt he could bring in some top talent. I mean his nearly record over the past few years speaks for itself. He could have had Ribery, Alonso, Drogba, Cech, Robinho and countless others. So he clearly knows these players exist, maybe this summer he’ll push the boat out?

Stranger things have happened…

Ryan Giggs had his name exposed in the press yesterday as the man behind the sordid affair with an ex-Big Brother star. What a muppet eh? Here’s a theory for all footballers. If you have lots of money and you have an affair with a women without lots of money, there is a strong possibility that a pay day of £50k to tell all will be tempting. So, for future reference, when choosing a woman to have a fling with make sure 1) She is suitably wealthy 2) Preferably has as much as you do to lose.

Watch out Cherie Blair… Pedro’s coming for you…

No seriously babe, Arsene gave him 160+ games in the first team...

If we’ve learned anything here, it’s firstly that footballers are in the main all complete dogs and all a touch retarded. Also, it teaches you that you can’t control the conversation in social media… don’t even attempt it, you’ll find yourself flamed like BK Whopper or a witch in Salem way back when.

Oh, and don’t get too smug about players behaving badly either. Don’t be surprised if a couple of stories of our own creep out over the coming months. Like I said, all footballer are retarded… even the Arsenal boys.

Finally, before I go, I wanted to highlight a bit of Le Grove forward thinking… Jack Wilshere was rightly taken out of the firing line for the Euro’s, which is great news for Arsenal, great news for England’s seniors and great news for his body. How did he do it? Well, it looks like the GPS team at Arsenal used hard data to convince the FA he was ruined physically…

‘Over the last few weeks, I have been feeling tired and my GPS results have shown that.’

If you can be bothered to traipse through the archives, this tech was a drum we were banging long before Arsenal adopted it. This season, it’s hard to argue that we’ve seen a massive improvement in the players fitness levels. In the main, we’ve had a pretty much full squad to pick from. There’s not much you can do about the ‘in your mind’ injuries Cesc has been suffering… bar letting him go to Barcelona! So pretty much a resounding success from that point of view this year.

Are we taking responsibility for the adoption of the technology? Without doubt… payment with two seats on the board will suffice Mr Kroenke.

I’m off to Ibiza this evening, so Geoff is stepping in from project managing a new business to write the blog for a week.

Has he calmed since his voluntary absence? Has he softened his stance on Wenger since he declared back in January we’d finish 4th? Has he finally admitted Song is world-class?

Find out tomorrow when the Bear returns!

P.S. Take a look at my post from May last year… read familiar? (LINK)

Wenger is delusional… | Cesc Fabregas is a disgrace | Finally… our season is over…

May 23, 2011

Season over… thank god for that. He let us down on the rapture, but at least he finally took a paving slab to our season that seems like it’s been on its last legs forever.

The game was bland and uninspiring as ever. We conceded first as usual. JD played Zamora onside, Gibbs tried to scramble back but couldn’t catch his man, the ball was cut back to none other than Steven Sidwell… and he placed his shot past Chezzer.

It didn’t take long to equalise, Diaby and Chamakh played a nice one two, Diaby slipped Robin in who finished clinically by firing his shot low and hard past Schwarzer.

The game ambled along. Fulham nearly caught us off guard again when Danny Murphy nicked the ball past Chezzer… Vermaelen was on hand for a last ditch goal line clearance of exceptional quality.

The second half opened and it wasn’t long before we were down again. Sagna failed to cut out a cross from outwide, Johann Djourrou missed the ball by miles, Thomas Vermaelen and his super leap weren’t enough for Bobby Z… he knocked his header past the keeper easily.

Zoltan Gera managed to earn a red card for a very dangerous challenge on Tommy V.

Arsenal failed to take control, failed to show any urgency and looked extremely likely to finish the season with even a point!

The crowd began to sing, ‘SPEND SOME F*CKING MONEY’… as they sang that, Theo Walcott took centre stage and finished well to secure the points.

A point was all we could manage, 3rd place had alluded us and the only thing Wenger could say when he was interviewed was, ‘even if people say you have to spend money we have to be realistic. We can’t buy players for £50million. That is a fact.’

For fu*ks sake Wenger... I mean, d'oh!

You know what Arsene, I’ve never read anyone suggest you sign a £50million player. How about you start with the basics. You know, like signing a £4million keeper when you need one? Or perhaps try spending more than £8million on an experienced defender when you’ve just let a world cup finalist go on a free to Spurs. Your thrifty buys might look nice on the balance sheet, but out on the pitch, they’re uglier than Luka Modric in a maxi dress.

Making out signing players is the toughest job in the world kind of makes a mockery of our massive scouting network. It’s funny how we never have a problem signing 17 year olds isn’t it? We have just as much competition for those players, maybe even more. Wenger says quality isn’t linked to price. Now, in some cases this is true, but in most cases, you get what you pay for.

Wenger is only interested in signing undervalued players, that’s where the problem is. He thinks about price first, quality second. Which is why we’re always going to struggle to find the right players. Why? Because there aren’t many world class players on the market for under £10million. Perhaps as we can afford it, we should start shopping in more up market places?

I also think someone should ask Wenger about Cesc Fabregas and his little jaunt over to Barcelona for the Grand Prix. Ok he’s injured, but he’s still on the pay roll. He’s still our captain and as I saw it, the season wasn’t over until after the Fulham game. Why is he taking his holidays early? Why is he rubbing the fans faces in it by going over to Barcelona of all places? His behaviour is really quite unbefitting of a Captain. He should be lying low at the moment. The most frustrating thing is we all know he’ll be back in London as the guest of honour for Barcelona when they play Manchester United at Wembley next Saturday.

People will say he was spending some time with his family… well you know what? I like spending time with my family too, but sometimes you owe a committment to the people who pay you £120k a week. You know what else? He has the money to fly his family over here. Easyjet do great deals on flights and London is a pretty cool place to take your family. Also… he could have seen his family next week. They’re not going anywhere. His decision was totally selfish just like his behaviour was last summer.

Wenger has no control over his players. The players have no respect for the club and if recent Denilson/Cesc interviews are anything to go by… there is no respect for his philosphy. Project Youth products complaining about the system that gave them a career break. How ironic…

His bizarre unsubstantiated ramblings in press conferences are making him sound delusional. Why is he moaning about financial doping again? I’d rather have an unsustainable model like Chelsea’s or United’s and pay their ticket prices than operate on a model which is almost unsustainable for the fans. Wenger might think Arsenal’s set up is perfect, but he’s not the one forking out a large percentage of his salary for a ticket… he’s not the one seeing no investment off the back of it. Unless of course you count club level extensions as investment?

Football is a global business now. When Wenger says you can’t always expect someone to come in and bail you out… he’s wrong. If you’re a big enough club, there will ALWAYS be someone ready to bail you out. Look at Barcelona and their Qatar deal, look at Liverpool and how their fortunes have turned around, look at how many groups are desperate to buy a United that is indebted up to its eyeballs. It’s a stupid argument. I’m not suggesting we go down that route, I’m merely pointing out that complaining about it is pointless.

Sugar Daddies are not going to disappear. Successful business men are not going to give us the advantage with FFP by playing by the rules. Money in the game is not going to disappear… nor will the bubble of Premiership football burst. If the greatest recession of modern times couldn’t take it down… nothing will. So stop whinging…

Our coach has lost touch with reality. He is delusional. He genuinely believes his team are really close. Today we just matched our worst ‘goals against’ since 1999, conceding 43 goals (A bizarre season, we finished 2nd and United finished first conceding 45). To find a worse figure before that, you’d have to go back to 1994 when we conceded 49 and finished 12th! Our goals conceded tally has happened after Wenger specifically identified defence as an issue last summer, the summer before and the summer before that!

What makes us think he is going learn this year?

Chelsea sacked Carlo Ancelotti last night for finishing 2nd in the league a year after winning the double. We’ve just had one of the worst finishes to a season I can remember and Wenger’s job is still the safest in the Premiership. There is something wrong with that. It’s worse because he knows he is invincible. That’s why he can rolls out and says the antagonistic things he does.

Like I said last week, I’m absolutely done with him. I have no expectation that he has it in him to change. I have no expectation he’s going to do what he needs to this summer and I have a horrible inkling this is going to end in a sacking next season.

Roll on the summer… we’ll know within a month whether he’s following the usual summer script.

Madrid playing the game | Wilshere dropped? | Wenger’s excuses don’t add up…

May 22, 2011

Fulham up today… it’s such a non-event, I can hardly find any information about it.

I believe Cesc Clichy and Nasri are all out. No coincidence they are the 3 with future question marks over their names. Then there are doubts over JD, Kozzer and Rosicky. So basically, we have a pretty depleted team this afternoon. The game is important to save a bit of face and possibly 3rd place. Mind you, I don’t hold out much hope of City losing to Bolton?

The interest is mostly going to be at the bottom of the table. Blackpool, Birmingham, Wolves and Wigan could all face the drop today… wouldn’t it be fantastic if Ian Holloway’s men could pull something out the bag? I’d personally love to get shot of Blackburn and Birmingham, that’d make my day pretty damn sweet! It’d also be pretty funny if Spurs lost 5th place to Liverpool!

Jack…

So Steve Stammers over at the Mirror reckons Jack Wilshere has been omitted from the England Under 21 squad this summer. Fantastic news if true. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a media back lash about a player NOT being selected. It’s a fair one, the only reason he is being selected is because Stuart Pearce is being completely selfish about his future. There is no logical reason to take a player who has bypassed the Under 21′s to a tournament.

I was told that Jack wasn’t overly keen on going in the first place, he’s played 4,538 minutes this season, that’ s more minutes than anyone at Arsenal and that’s more minutes than all bar one in the senior England squad. For me, questions should be raised as to why Arsene Wenger has used him that much this year. This is an 18 year old kid being depended on to be our main man. It’s career negligence and for me… one of the major factors behind our woeful injury problems. Don’t forget, not only will he be playing those minutes, he’ll be doubling them through the harsh training methods Arsenal put their players through.

Finding players in Coventry…

Interesting that Wenger said we wouldn’t find the right type of players for our squad in Coventry… because last time I checked, that was exactly the place where 11 ladies of Arsenal persuasion helped the club lift it’s first non-made up trophy of the season. Well done to the girls, you put in a terrific performance and you’ve made us all proud!

Cesc Fabregas…

Various media outlets are reporting that Barcelona are looking to step in and sign Cesc for a fee a little more appealing than the slap in the face they faxed over last year. There is also a lot of talk surrounding Madrid and a £58million offer. I believe Madrid will offer the money, I’m just struggling to believe they’re doing it for any other reason than showing Barcelona they have more money than them. I think the Catalan’s have more pressing issues this  summer… their squad is painfully small and it’ll need bolstering in more than one position. They don’t have the funds for a £150million spending spree, so a £60million signing seem beyond the realms…

I think the basketball scores Madrid and Barcelona registered last night showed just how weak La Liga is outside their top 4.

Central defender talk…

“However, we expected central defender Thomas Vermaelen to return from injury in January – and he didn’t play.

“If we had known that was going to be the case, maybe we would have done something. But would we have won the league? It is very difficult to say that.”

I have to pull you up on this one Arsene. You may have thought Thomas Vermaelen would be back in January, but you yourself have always said it can take 2 months to return to peak fitness, so January after a serious injury was always ambitious. You were also aware during that time period that Squillaci was an absolute liability and that you were being overly dependent on the injury prone JD and the error prone Koscielny. You could have signed a centre back in January and you should have.

Anyone with half a brain knew what you had to do, but as usual, Arsene knows best… until he doesn’t, then he plays the bad luck card.

Good managers have foresight.

Goodbye my lover…

After a horrible year of ups and downs, we head into the final Arsenal kick off of the season. We’ve had hope this year, we’ve had despair. We’ve had a cup final, we’ve beaten the best team in the world, we’ve seen the emergence of the best talent in English football since Gazza, we’ve finally found a new keeper, we’ve seen inappropriate back heels, we’ve seen our manager exposed again, we’ve seen fights in the stands, we’ve seen ill-timed air shots, we’ve heard boo’s, we’ve seen strikers on the wing, we’ve seen strikers take 2 months off through exhaustion, we’ve not seen a single goal from outside the box at the emirates, we’ve been crowned away day champions and we’ve not seen a trophy… and the worst part? No open top parade for our underachieving financial report this year.

It’s been a rocky old year, football has been a cruel to us… but my god, we’ll miss it when it’s gone…

The next three months mean you’ll finally have no excuse not to spend time with loved ones. It means sneaking off on a Saturday afternoon to drink beer no longer has a tangible excuse behind it. It means you’re going to have to pay your kids, girlfriend, wives and part-time lovers some attention…

This is a sad day, whichever way you look at it.

If you’re lucky enough to be heading down to Craven Cottage, have a good one. If you’re watching it cooped up behind a stream, crack open a crate of Peroni and enjoy the last bit of football until we head out to China for a really exciting tour.

Before I slink off, I just wanted to thank all of you for another super year of blogging. If I was Arsene Wenger, I’d make up a special trophy just for you lot… because you have all played a part in creating the best online comments section out of any of the blogs. We salute your commitment and thank you for taking the time out to air your thoughts at the bottom of our posts. You make it worth getting up at 0630 in the morning to write and as long as you keep dropping by to get involved… Geoff and I will keep on writing!

Best Comments award!

Have a great day, see you in the comments!

P.S. Big shout out to Paul Le Grove who beat Jame De Gale last night in the boxing… a terrific performance that was in no way associated with a made up sponsorship deal with Le Grove.
