Arshavin goal video exclusive (Superb) | Arsenal teach Barcelona lesson (Double superb)

by & filed under Uncategorized.

Yeah, that's a flag.

As I sit here, writing this post on my BB, wondering how the guy in front of me has managed to smell so horrifically of concentrated urine… I muse over the importance of that result and wonder if it’s the start of something special?

Preparation for the most important game on the British Isles has seen this year was perfect. From a squad perspective, the only two players missing were long termer Tommy V and perma short termer Abou Diaby.

From a fan perspective, have you ever known a more united front? We were galvanised by positivity online and that was reflected in the ground. The atmosphere was more humble than United, yet infused with enough electricity to have everyone on the edge off their seat singing like there was no such thing as a ‘modern fan.’

The game opened in a slick fashion, both teams taking it in turns to control the game. If I’m being honest, we looked the most comfortable on the ball for the first 20 minutes.

Our first chance came when Robin found Cesc at the back post, the Spaniard’s chip missed the goal.

Song foolishly found himself in the book early on after clattering Messi. He can get away with that in the Premiership, not in Europe. He was treading a fine line for the rest of the match, which was dumb considering Messi was hardly causing problems where he was.

Shortly after, Jack Wilshere played a hospital pass to Song, the man from Cameroon couldn’t muddle his way out of trouble, Barca capitalised, Messi broke through one on one but Chesney did enough to put him off.

Sadly, our good play in the opening 20 minutes wasn’t rewarded, Barcelona broke free, Villa was slipped in and he did what he does best… finish. We were one nil down, Arsenal replays went into a black out but apparently, it was apparently offside.

The last thing you need against Barca is a referee special…

The crowd were silenced, memories of the second leg last year came flooding back as they dominated possession in a way only they knew how. They were like Arsenal on 2 cans of Redbull, the speed of their passing was mesmerising. Watching Arsenal try to play was like watching Luke Chadwick trying to steal a girl off Henri Lansbury… we simply couldn’t compete. However, that’s not to say I didn’t feel we had something in the locker…

For all the great football Barca were playing, they weren’t really testing the keeper. They weren’t really threatening in any way and if I’m honest, on an individual level, I wasn’t in awe of what they had. Whilst our game was a poor mans version of their’s, it was still capable of opening them up and that’s exactly what we started to do in the second half.

Song had tried his best to get himself sent off, Wenger decided the time was right to yank him off and sling our favourite Russian on. People behind me were gasping at the prospect of losing our only defensive midfielder. I had to turn and let them know that it was Jack Wilshere playing the holding role this evening, so we needn’t worry*.

*May I just note that it’s funny to read all the guardianista blogs talking about Jack as a holding midfielder. They weren’t so keen on that idea when Geoff called it back in July!

Andrey gave the whole team a bit of spark, his one touch football and his ability to create picked the crowd up and we all started to believe again. Robin was slipped in over the top by a superb Gael Clichy chip, he controlled it, looked up and smashed the ball as hard as he could inside the near post. Valdes had his angles covered, that shot was unbelievably accurate and the roof lifted off the stadium!

Everyone started to believe in the ground again.

Nasri picked the ball up wide, bounded into the box, picked out Arshavin at the back post who was on hand to slot home the winner!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw35_SlbIzg&fs=1&hl=en_GB]

What a great goal, we all went completely nuts and the game finished off with a beautiful win!

The players…

Well, there were some great performances out there last night. The two stand out players for me were Koscielny, who had a blinder at the back. He reads the game superbly and he was first to everything last night. He’s improving every game and like I’ve said many times before, nothing phases him. His passing is exceptional and it’s a credit to his development that we’re not missing Vermaelen.

Jack Wilshere took on the deep lying role for the second time in a week and absolutely excelled. He read the unpredictable Barca players extremely well, his passing was good and I thought he showed great vision on a number of occasions. His attitude versus some of the other players we’ve had in that role is top notch. He’s a superb player first and foremost, but secondly, he’s an absolute warrior on the pitch.

Another mention has to go out to Theo Walcott. I’ve given him a lot of grief over the past 2 years, but this season he has been a revelation. His passing and movement yesterday was fantastic but more important was his contribution to the defence. He tracked back like a seasoned full back mucking in where he could. His fitness is excellent and going forward he looks far more natural than he ever has, he was running rings around the Barca backline which is no mean feat!

I thought Alex Song did well in the middle of the park but he was a bit kamikaze at times. I can’t help but think he’s always going to have that problem at the top-level because of his lack of mobility. I thought Eboue did well in the circumstances but I’ll be looking forward to seeing Sagna back in the act in the next game. Cesc for me wasn’t particularly impressive, he made a few bad passes yesterday and his finishing was weak. Still, as with all great players, he’s there when it counts, setting the ball rolling for the winner. Imagine how we’ll play when Nasri is back to match sharpness?

Also, finally, a mention goes out to Andrey Arshavin. I’ve stuck by him all this season because I believe in top class players and I believe that this guy is a genius. He came on, he gave it his all and remained composed to slot home Samir’s pinpoint pass. That was a great finish coming on and like I said a few weeks ago, in the run in, a player of his epic talent is going to be the difference between winning a trophy and not. Good to have him getting back to his best and just for the record, Pam the Tea Lady told me his attitude in training has been world class of late.

… sorry, can I also say a big well done to Chezzer as well! That was a massive game for a young keeper and despite his terrible kicking, he did everything right. After hours practice for you please…

After thoughts…

It’s a real shame to hear that the media don’t feel the same way our result as we do. Barcelona made 750 passes, roughly double ours.

So what.

I can’t remember too many Arsenal blogs or fans saying we were a better footballing side? I can’t remember thinking we were going to have to do anything other than weather a storm of amazing football?

You know what British media, we just took on the might of the greatest football team not of a generation but of the past 100 years… and we won. We did everything you told us we couldn’t and no one seems to have the decency to own up that they were wrong about us?

Surely the result is what football is all about?

How many years have I read that possession football counts for nothing if you don’t win? Now all of a sudden, you play possession football and lose and that’s not a problem?

Do me a favour.

Arsenal just put the Premiership back on the map. We just did what £200million worth of Real Madrid talent couldn’t. We just showed the rest of Europe that Barcelona are not invincible and that making 40 crab passes a minute might look dazzling, but you’ve still got out score the opposition.

Has anyone mentioned the fact that Arsenal had more attempts on goal than Barcelona did?

For me, we more than held our own yesterday and if we have the right players available in 2 weeks, there is every chance we might pull off a stunning upset.

It’s so important to remember that the team we just beat is widely respected as the greatest team in history. If we go there and lose 1-0, there is no shame in that. United we stand, united we fall. We’ve had an amazing night tonight, but let’s not kid ourselves the Champions League is the grand prize, we’ve got bigger fish to fry at home.

Time to refocus… Next up, Leyton Orient in the FA Cup, then we move swiftly onto the problematic Stoke.

    @ Everyone

Why are people looking to f*****g to justify our win last night? Surely people should know the drill by now: oh Barcelona will prove too much in the 2nd leg [same cr*p said for 1st leg] oh Messi cant score on the british isle, oh Messi didnt have his shooting boots on!

Fact are that we will be going to Nou Camp with 2 better CBs that last season [touchwood no Squillaci] and touchwood 4 midfielders or strikers that we didnt have last season & i certainly NOT scared of them, difficult? sure but make no mistakes we now just as good a chance if not better than them of qualifying for QFs

Fact are Barcelona’s pressing protects 2/3rd of the goal but in the defensive third, they are weak and everytime enetered that part of their pitch, we look like scoring.

Dont let twats take any gloss of this win or our chances of progressing past Barcelona

  2. SUGA3

I like that we have snatched the victory out of the jaws of the defeat for once!

and two sweet strikes from two classy players, those who wanted to sell either of them or both, eat your heart out…

  3. nishanth

    Szczesny on twitter
We did it!! What a night!!” The Arsenal keeper exclaimed.

“At home with my mum, trying to calm down after last night :) Thanks for creating an unbelivable (sic) atmosphere at Emirates.”

  4. nishanth

Kozzer looks like he needs a rest.Last time he didn’t start a game for us was in the beginning of december. We need him stay fit.Djourou out of the FA cup game so looks like Squillacci and Kos will start

Im going for a 2-1 win! lets dismantle this myth that barca are unbeatable ….

C’Mon you boy’s in red and white!!

Got carried away then forgot we are playing tomorrow…..

  6. Hussain

Cmon!! A day at the work, and still buzzing, been in everyone’s faces who have doubted us!
Come ONNNNNNN!!! Win the Carling Cup, knock Barca out!

  7. Gooby

we could be going to wembley twice this year, or even better, 3 times! *dreams*

well winning the CL in Wembley as the first London side to achieve it would be brilliant

  8. Bengali Gunner

Judging from yesterdays performance you would never think that this is Koscielny’s first year in top flight football – simply amazing.

    Barca Second Leg (hopefully):
    Sagna JD Kos Clichy
    Song Wilshere
    Walcott/Arsh Cesc Nasri
    RvP

Arsenes got a tough choice though, start arshavin or walcott?

  9. simon mcmahon

    for me two words
    Fucking awesome
last night the fans need to take a bow , they were brilliant,
It reminded me of the noise in the ground when we played Juventus at highbury a few years ago for me that was the best atmosphere I ever experienced and I include all the cup finals I have been two and the games where we cliched league titles.
JACK WILSHERE just awesome the next captain of this club 19 , magical and what an attitude .
and aplology’s and humble pie for me KOZZER was outstanding, and isn’t it good to have a real keeper in goal.

  10. Bengali Gunner

Gotta give a mention to Clichy. Although he was at fault for the first goal, he had an excellent game overall.
Some vital interceptions, clearances and headers even, but best of all; the beautiful chip to RvP

  11. Rohan

Start Walcott. Save Arshavin for the league and domestic cups etc.

Arshavin’s a liability defensively whatever you may say as is proved by that back header in the dying minutes that almost resulted in a goal.

  12. Rohan

Yeah, Clichy apart from the goal had an impeccable game. Proper warrior he is.

Eboue was more than decent as well. Was pretty disciplined and kept Pedro reasonably quiet.

  13. Dial Square

We need a song for Jack how about
He’s here he’s there he’s every fucking where Jack Wilshere Jack Wilshere.

    You’ll never beat the Szczesny

HOw is Sagna back for the next leg? Isn’t a straight red card suspension for 2 games? or am I getting the rules mixed up?

  16. SUGA3

    Rohan,

“Kalinka” (Russian: Калинка) is a Russian song written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Larionov[citation needed] and first performed in Saratov as part of a theatrical entertainment that he had composed.[citation needed] Soon it was added to the repertory of a folk choral group.

  17. ardentgooner

HOw is Sagna back for the next leg? Isn’t a straight red card suspension for 2 games? or am I getting the rules mixed up?

  18. Hussain

Sagna back, Nasri fit and firing, Vermalaen fit and firing!

I would start Kozzer and DJ at back
and Vermalaen with wilshere in the midde

  19. SUGA3

‘A player who is given a straight red card for a bad foul is automatically suspended a minimum of one game, but additional punishments from the Control and Disciplinary Body can be added, depending on the severity of the foul.’

  20. Gareth

Cant get over the media’s reaction. Fucking disgrace ! If Utd had’ve produced that performance they’d be wanking over it for months.
Hopefully this Anti-Arsenal shit unites the team even more and we prove them all wrong. Go on the Arsenal !!

  21. AC Gooner

love the video of Andrei’s goal. Cannot imagine what it must have been like to be there, but thanks for trying to share. It was amazing in my little pub.

  22. Hussain

Just watched Pep’s post match interview where he says, If you are free, or have nothing to do, I invite you to come to Barcelona for the return leg, its going to be a good match!

Its going to be a monster of a game imo, If we stay injury free, i am up for a cracker of a game at Nou Camp!

  23. Hussain

and i have watched Andrei’s goal a 100 times already! cant stop loving jack’s sneaky little pass to Fabregas, he had 4 Barca players around him, it was a great great ball by him, and well the one by Fabregas, we have got used to his class havent we ? :) Great ball through, releases Nasri and Nasri doesn’t act selfishly going for the shot, waits picks out Andrei running unmarked, lays it down for him and Andrei does what he does the best, finds the back of the net, pure sex of football!

  24. Hussain

Koscielny gets us out of trouble, plays the ball to Bendtner, bendtner plays it to Wilshere, Wilshere lays it for Fabregas, Fabregas finds Nasri, Nasri waits, waits, plays it for Arshavin and Arshavin makes the commentators go ARSHAVIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNN!!!

  25. Hussain

Been reading great things about Wilshere, Koscielny, Chezzer, Nasri, RVP and Arshavin on some Spanish Blogs and papers!

  26. sol

Why does everyone keep commenting on the media’s reaction being bad?
The BBC, the Telegraph and The Sun were what I read, and they all make a point of how great Arsenal were and how they have come of age.
    What’s been said negatively??

  27. Lurch LeRouge

yeah Pat looked ready to skin someone, like to see that more often.

speaking of assistant managers, i almost threw up my lunch reading twitchy’s column on gatusso and jordan today… rambling on about Jordan’s statesmanship. you bet Jordan said something in Italian that twitch missed – I’d almost bet my house on it!

  28. Kayciey

Some minutes past midnight in Nairobi Kenya…there was an uncanny mist hanging all over and everyone was asleep…and when van persie hit that ball, i knew there was only one place the ball was going to end…i started shouting like a maniac and soon the entire neighbourhood was awake to my shouts.

There are few times in a fan’s life when he looks back and says, “That was the game”…even after years take a toll on him physically he will always remember the day when his favorite team won the match and how…this was that day…

and the best part we will have sagna for the return leg…and more importantly the belief…there is a dialogue which i heard in a hindi movie not so long ago and i remembered it after the match…

the meaning in english translation is, “confidence is a big time bitch…nail it & then there is awesomeness but miss it & then there is a scandal”

Arsenal has nailed that bitch…and the 2nd leg will prove it. Mark my words!!

Koz was my MOTM, Schzesny and Wilshere follows closely.

  29. zeus

Shame on all of you. If your gonna describe the goal, at least take the time to do it properly.

Koscielny beautifully wins possession and lays it to Bendtner. HRP then comes inside and lay a pass to Jack Wilshere.

A second before Wilshere gets the ball, one notices that he takes a small glance forward. In that split second he knows what is to happen. His pass to Fabregas is first time, COOLNESS personified under SERIOUS pressure.

It rolls to Fabregas and in one motion he controls, turns and plays Samir Nasri in behind the Barcelona defence.

He drives at goal but 3 Barca defenders makes the angle almost impossible. In typical Wengerball fashion, he checks inside, looking for the extra pass. He waits. And waits.

Robin is screaming for it. He is ignored. Our little Russian screams and his calls are not ignored. Lovely waited pass across the 18 yard area has the barca defence and goalkeeper scampering to put out the fire.

But Arsenal would not be denied, NOT THIS NIGHT. AA23 cooly slots it back across the goal leaving Valdes rooted and Barcelona stunned.

Cue pandemonium in Emirates stadium. The fight back complete.

  30. TOMTOM

What a win lastnight, same formation in the second leg with Song and Wilshere covering the back four and we will be ok.

  31. Kushagra India

He said it was a very satisfying flight back to Barca

  33. SUGA3

    Lurch

we really have to beat Barca, as when they go past Meelan (which they will) and we get knocked out there will be no end to it…

surely, I can’t count on AC winning by two clear goals @ SHL?

    can I?

  34. Lurch LeRouge

to soon to tell SUGA, give it another week and see what injuries are like before looking into the future – needless worry right now IMO.

    Lurch,

to be honest, I still have the ‘nothing to lose’ attitude and IMO this is the way forward…

sure, we have the games coming thick and fast every few days, and some shitkickers at that :(

we should have a few of these in the squad and keep them locked up in Lecter-style masks and roll them out to play Stokes of this world

  37. Lurch LeRouge

provided our 2nd XI put in a shift when required I see no reason why we can’t progress in all 4 competitions TBH. No more than 4 changes a game and we could be on for a record breaking season.

It all hinges on the Denilson, Rosicky, Diaby, Chamakh and Squillaci to put some serious graft in over the next month.

  38. charlieboy

Would be good to come up with a few new songs for some of the boys, Ive thought of one for chesney… we could sing like we did for Seaman “Herbie Herbie Herbie!” as he plays number 53 same as herbie! what do you crazy cats think???

  39. Keyser

Couldn’t care less if Spurs go further than us in the Champions League, this seasons been pretty much ridiculous from the perspective of the league as a whole and our own form.

We’re probably the only team in Europe in 4 compeitions, isn’t that a surprise to people ?!

If we go out I hope Spurs stay in, we knocked them out of the Carling Cup about 3 rounds ago, they literally knocked themselves out of the FA Cup in about 10 minutes against Fulham.

We’re playing 3 games a week, and this is probably going to continue for a fair while yet, even if we maintain form at some point we’re just going to come up against a team that’s fit and rested and we’re going to suffer for it.

Dunno if Birmingham are still in the FA Cup, but they’ll be rested for the final and I can see that being a struggle.

  40. A

I wonder what team we’ll play in the league cup final Keyser, reckon we could rest Nasri for Arshavin, and Bendtner could start too. Other than those two I reckon we’ll play our strongest team

  41. Zorr0

    Sunday.
    Almunia
    Ebway Squiddly Kos Gibbs
    Denilson Song Rosicky
    Bendtner Chamakh Nasri

That should be strong enough and rests players for SToke.

  42. Keyser

Do they play mid-week aswell ?!

I think it’ll matter how we get through the next couple of games and we’ll just see who’s still fit.

I can just imagine Pulis plotting some sort of mass-injury crisis for us.

  43. Zorr0

    A, how goes it fella?

I reckon we should play the A team in the final. We have 6 games after before Sunderland at home.

  44. Big Dave

    A.

I will be dissapointed if AW puts out a so called weaken team out for the final, the big players have to play. Like Man u did last yr v Villa. we have to go for it on the day, which means no Denilson, Diaby, Eboue, NB, MC

  45. A

Zorro I’d go with that side apart from Arshavin in for Nasri.

Yeah not bad cheers, yourself? How’s the relegation battle with your own team?!

I agree that we should play a strong side but Arshavin and Bendtner have played a big part in getting us to the final, so they deserve the chance to see it through in my opinion…. Maybe Gibbs too but probably not!

  46. Keyser

Also after watching the replay of Van Persie’s goal, I’m glad we didn’t do the bundle celebration like we usually do, or Wenger might not have made it out in one piece under everyone else.

  47. A

Arshavin in as he deserves it and it’ll be good for him, maybe rest Nasri, and Bendtner in both because he too deserves it, and Brum score most of their goals from set pieces and Bendtner would be good for defending that….

  48. Zeus

Just rewatched the game again. It just doesn’t get old does it? Still emotional about it.

I get a tingling feeling whenever I see that second goal. So many times we unduly put ourselves under pressure by losing possession. If we cut that out in 3 weeks time then barcelona’s task will be that much more difficult for them.

  49. A

I dunno Zorro, I reckon Barca are the only team that could cope with Barca’s pressing when they don’t have the ball and not put themselves under pressure, it’s insane how well and hard they work!

  50. Zorr0

A, we got a good win last weekend, but I have been out for 2 weeks and prob another after tweaking medial ligaments in right knee. How is your team getting on now?

Bertie prob deserves a chance in the final agreed and maybe AA too.

  51. A

Not great Zorro to be honest! Though we’d turned the corner when we won about 4/5 games ago and then scored a minute into our following game before conceding 8 first half goals! Since then we got one 2-2 draw where we were 2-0 up at half time and lost another two. Looks like the drop beckons….

    Saturday I’d go

    Almunia

    Eboue Squllaci Koscielny Gibbs

    Rosicky Song Denilson

    Bendtner Chamakh Arshavin

    and for the final

    Szczesny

Sagna JD Koscielny Clichy(or maybe Gibbs?)

    Cesc Song Wilshere

    Theo Bendtner Arshavin

Although I don’t like not having VP or Nasri!

AKB for life! The true realists!

    Sorry couldn’t resist. :D

This place is pretty dead though when we win though. I guess there are more comments when there are raging arguments.

  55. Rohan

This week just can’t get better. We pull out one of our greatest ever victories with 2 fabulous goals against Barca-fucking-lona. Aced both my exams, got a job. This is brilliant.

  56. Zeus

Quality wilshere video that. Come one come all, no matter how many barca players try to close him down he just let’s the ball run across him and gain 10 yards or so and he always finds an outlet for a pass.

While he might not have scored as many as Ramsey before his injury, I think his overall game has usurped aaron’s at this point.

  57. Hussain

What an interview by the Pole there, seriously though, things are looking very bright for us! We are almost an unbeatable team when we have our first Xi fit, thank God Arshavin, Eboue and Nicky B have picked up and hopefully Vermalaen can join us too and Chamakh needs to gear up, We need him in the FA Cup and League! We will have a trophy in our pocket when we meet Barcelona the next time!
    Believe!

Koscielny arguably responsible for allowing Messi three chances like three of the chances he put away in barcelona last year. Dont kid, if Messi wasnt shiite last night Koscielny could be getting a different sort of reaction on here. Dont be so harsh on Vermaelen’s performance last year. Dont forget the absolute power, commitment, and ability Tommy V brings to the table – future captain

Clean up this season? People shouldn’t be getting ahead of ourselves like it’s divine right after leading Barca at half time in a game that could have gone either way.

I’m not complaining about the result it was pleasing like Last years 2-2 but people have unrealistic expectations because many sports/football are not that simple, the squad ain’t that good and things over the course of the season won’t go our way at times.

  61. AC Gooner

Shame UEFA took down the Arshavin goal video. I want to see that again! and again! Their copyright even extends to homemade vids from the stands? Greedy Bastards.

  62. Elena

Hey Pedro! Any chance to get the video via megaupload or a similar service? I really need it to illustrate the incredible atmosphere of Emirates and this epic game to a few of my close friends and my household only (including my mother-in-law who is an incredible fan of Arsenal and Arshavin at her 80, never misses a game). Much thanks!
