Afobe, is he our new star? England think so! And what about Pepé?

October 11, 2010

So in this dire down time of the English game we may have a new star, Benik Afobe who was prolific for the academy team has scored a hatrick against european giants Cyprus, it doesn’t matter who the opposition is, it’s international and they all count, well done that man.

Maybe we should start giving some of our kids some playing time, especially if they know where the goal is, he was in good company, the Ipswich boy Wickham was on show, but it was our boy who got the hatrick.

I have always believed that if you’re good enough, you are ready, and if you aren’t, no amount of playing time will change that, sure we have had players over the years that have improved with game time, Parlour and Flamini are testament to that, but if we have kids like Wilshere and Ramsey that click from the off, I believe we should blood them, JET is another that may benefit.

I have only seen Afobe once or twice, but his record speaks for itself, I remember when we had two in the reserves under George Graham, Kevin Campbell and Andy Cole, George decided to go with Campbell, I understand there were issues with Cole so we shipped him out to Bristol City, but I also remember when I first saw him in the Charity Shield and he almost broke Schmeichel’s crossbar.

Would it hurt against teams that aren’t top 4? I would give it a go. In another month we’ll have Robin, Nikki B, Ramsey, Cesc and Theo back in contention, I would use this time to give the Afobe’s a chance, at least in between Robin, Nikki and Theo’s next bout of injuries anyway.

I also think if we don’t try out Chezzer or Mannone before January then we should stick an early enquiry in for Reina, he is what we need, young enough and it would please Cesc, Liverpool look like they are going under and if they lose 9 points then Reina won’t want to stay, they will also have to let him go as they will be run by administrators, and although it may not be a fire-sale, there aren’t too many teams out there that will be able to pay them what they would find acceptable.

With Sagna out, I’m thinking shove Eboue in there, he’s better in my book anyway. So if we get lucky with injuries and we make some cute signings, could this be our January team?

Reina

Sagna Koscielny Veramelen Gibbs

Wilshere

Ramsey Cesc Nasri

Robin Theo

With a bench of Arshavin, Chamakh, Bendtner, Diaby, Squillaci, Djourou, Clichy, Rosicky, Afobe, JET, Vela, Denilson, Song and Chezzer

Yes I know I probably have too many subs, but at least we’ll have a bunch to choose from. Now I think that mob would send a shiver down the premier league’s spine, and don’t forget if we are competing in 3 cups, we’ll need a big bench. And most of that bench will be injured anyway. Now with that little lot around, do we really need so many youngsters in the squad costing us money? I would keep Lansbury, Aneke, Freeman, Frimpong, Nordtveit, Bartley and Eastmond, but how many of the others in that age group do we really need?

Another week of nothing, but it will be fun watching the Liverpool saga unfold, I bet the Everton fans are enjoying it! We get a chance to see a few Arsenal players play for England, then we can start to think about the Birmingham game, boy it’s been for ever!

Have a great day Grovers, it will soon be upon us!

UPDATE:

If you haven’t heard already, Arsenal have signed up to a deal with a firm called YES. They’ll be allowed to show delayed Arsenal games over the web. Here is the press release.

We finally beat the chavs!

October 10, 2010

Our academy team beat the chavs 3 zip at their gaff, and in front of Ancelotti, now he will know what it feels like to lose to a London rival!

Paddy Vieira thinks that Man City are a bit behind us, so at least there’s someone else out there that thinks we are a top 3 side, I look forward to when people look at us as a title contender, remember those days when it was the Mancs and us for 8 years, first or second?

I was wondering what Wellington Silva is like, I understand he is joining the first team squad in january, I remember when we had Vela coming in, a new signing the boss said, but Wellington is being lauded as the next Brazilian superstar, I hope he is as good as they all say, what we need in this team is someone who can do the unexpected.

We need a Ronaldo, not a Denilson Brazilian, no offence mate, I’m sure you know what I mean.

If all else fails this year at least our kit is nice, I think the white sleeved retro kit is our nicest since the one that had the hooped socks and the lightening stripes.

There are strong rumours that Liverpool could go into administration this week, surely not, administration? Now for all their faults I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, well except them, the spuds, mancs and chavs that is, that would be not only funny, but seriously deserved, they bang on about having no money, but they have spent more than anyone other than shitty.

Being financially prudent makes sense, and we at Le Grove has never condoned silly spending, but you don’t have to spend silly money to make this team unbeatable, and I think that’s all Cesc was saying, too late now though.

Maybe by January there will be someone out there he’ll surprise us with, after all some of our biggest signings have been in the window, remember Theo, Ade and Diaby?

I would personally like him to try out the two young pretenders over the next few games, see if they have it, we’ll know, after all we know that one okay game doesn’t make Fabianski the answer anymore than one game against Fulham makes Mannone the answer, but I would like to see if Chezzer or Mannone have that bit of magic that you could see in a young Seaman or a young Shilton, I remember both of them.

One thing I know for sure, the two we are currently alternating most definitely haven’t got it.

Someone needs to explain to me why we need a whole week and a half off before an England game, I know the other nations played on Friday, so why could we not have played last Wednesday?

I would like to see Internationals played either outside the season, say June or Christmas (with a break) or played midweek without stopping weekend football, if your nation loses players, hard luck.

Anyway, only a week to go before we play again Grovers, so plenty to talk about before, not sure what yet, but I’ll try not to repeat myself, if you have any ideas, put them forward and we’ll give it some thought!

P.S. If you want read something else, check out Tatty Nut Nut. If you didn’t catch our Kick Campaign video, take a look! Arsenal Arsenal have also lent their support to the campaign, many thanks guys, spread the word and get people contributing!

We are getting closer to the return of the fab four. Then watch us go!

October 9, 2010

I was thinking what we could be like when we get Fabregas, Walcott, Robin Van Persie and Tomas Vermaelen back, what a difference those guys will make to us, I always had Squillaci to move aside for Vermaelen, but with Wenger making him captain for the chavs game, I’m guessing he’s eyeing up Kozzer to be the one that steps aside.

Or did he make Squillaci captain because he is the older, wiser one, a bit like he used to give it to Almunia.

Interesting to hear that we now have Mannone getting itchy feet, saying the two that have been given chances have failed to impress when they’ve played, hmmm, brave, but true, so that makes two of our young ‘uns have now said what we’ve all been saying, so that’s all the pundits, all the journo’s, all the fans and now finally their team mates, ha, ha, will the boss take note now?

The other exciting news is we finally have Nikki B set to return, now I know he’s much maligned, I know he an egotist, but he does bang them in important goals, he is a year older and he does give us options, let’s hope he fulfils his promise this year, I for one hope he does because we need a new hero, maybe he can be our new Charlie George!

Finally we are hearing that maybe Munich are ready to listen to offers for holding midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, I really rate this guy, but I don’t think we have a chance in hell of signing him, they would want way more than we’d be prepared to pay, he is very Wilshere, maybe Arsene is earmarking Jack to be the holding midfielder, with Nasri and Fabregas playing either side of him.

I know many of you will cry no way, we need a bigger player in there, a Diaby, Song or Denilson, well I think they have all had their chances and they all came up short, Jack has just got better and whilst he was always looking good as an attacking midfielder, his versatility has illustrated he can play where he’s needed, he’s tenacious, he’s talented and he doesn’t give up. He is playing like Flamini did in his last season.

I know it’s October, and I don’t expect any signings in January, but I would like to see our young keepers given a run out to see what they have and if they can do the job, for me the two we have been playing this season so far, haven’t. Schwarzer though is not the answer.

Have a great day Grovers and don’t forget to support our campaign to kick kicking out of football, and pay homage to a well designed logo.

Kick Update:

1979gooner has been doing some digging at the FA, this makes for very interesting reading regarding the FA’s stance onfootball violence. Rico over at Highbury House has written an article about Danny Murphy’s comments yesterday which is well worth a read. Finally, Simon has put together this grisly compilation of some pretty nasty challenges, plus one that was probably deserved… can you guess which one?

How can our wage bill be only £22million lower than City’s when we have no big earners?

October 8, 2010

So it’s official, our wage bill is only £22mil lower that Man City’s, how can that be? They are a team of big name stars, Ade for instance went there on £180k a week and YaYa on £200k a week, almost their whole squad was bought, they have too many players and we have kids and a wage structure. So how on earth can we only be that much short of what they pay???

Now I’d like the know-alls with the figures to tell me how that’s possible. Someone asked what the £55mil in other expenses were, I think it was a way around paying people like me a dividend, it’s why Gazidas and Wenger are happy to win bugger all, if I’m wrong, perhaps Arsenal can enlighten us today.

Anyway, I’ve been bitching since the chav result, now for my fantasy football team, have a think about this for the brum game.

Chezzer

Nordtveit Kosser Squillaci Gibbs

Wilshere Cesc Nasri

Theo RVP Chamakh

Now I know we have injuries but what about giving this mob a go? They will all be fit soon, we pay them, I think this little lot could win the league.

My original comment about having way too many players we never play stands, so why not play some that can and will step up?

Song has shown his true worth, Clichy has gone south, Sagna can’t cross, Diaby is stupid as has no footballing sense, the rest of the payroll is never going to make it so why the hell not go for broke, this season is fast becoming a dud, we are still in all the cups, so the whole thing isn’t dead yet, time for a change Arsene, we were toothless against the chavs, they had a bunch of injuries too, so why not give it a go?

For me we could clear out at least half our payroll, so many will never make the team, Randall, Hoyte, Song, Denilson, Diaby (maybe) I could go on, JET has promise but…  the rest are just costing us £22mil short of the all stars of man City. What the…

I read yesterday that Diaby chose us over the chavs because Maureen wouldn’t guarantee him a first team place, guess what? Wenger did, who was lucky there eh? Who really dodged the bullet?

Play the team I suggest and we might just pull it off. Choose your team Grovers, let’s spend Friday picking who we think could do it with what we have, we may well surprise ourselves!

Have a great Friday, tomorrow is the countdown to when we finally play again! Screw International week, no one cares anyway.

How do you prevent an Arsenal disaster similar to United/Liverpool?

October 7, 2010

Try your hardest to be non-partisan during this post. It is after all non-partisan day.

I went out to watch my boss have a fag the yesterday, if he can take fag breaks, I can take passive smoking breaks. I’ll be damned if anyone is going to tell me otherwise. We got chatting about football, he’s a scouser, we’re sharing similar pain at the moment, though it has to be said, we’re suffering a paper cut compared to the arm Liverpool lost in the shredder.

Anyway, talk came onto the plight of his club financially. He spoke of it being a good thing for the club, he said relegation might not be such a bad thing either because at some point they’ve got to start from scratch and find their way as a club together.

Sad times for our bindipper friends...

He doesn’t feel sorry for himself noting that Liverpool fans pined after a new buyer for 4 years before the Americans came in. Looking on green eyed at the spending of United and Chelsea, seeking similar gratification for themselves and hoping they too could be elevated to the next level and achieve success on a par with what was standard for them in the 70′s and 80′s.

It didn’t work out that way though did it? The Americans came in, promised new players, a new stadium… all with no LBO. Theys did ok for a while, they received planning permission to build on Stanley park, they lent the club £140million to buy Rafa a bunch of average players and they finished 2nd in the league. Regardless of success, my colleague said as soon as that sale happened, the club lost something more important than success and shiny new players… it’s soul.

Something it hasn’t been able to claw back since. Even the players seem to hate being there…

Liverpool were an institution similar to ours before the Americans came in and butchered it in the space of 4 years. They were lauded for doing things the Liverpool way, for caring about the fans and creating an amazing atmosphere to watch football. According to my season ticket holding boss… that’s all gone.

I wrote a pretty strong post about this subject a year ago to much derision. However, I think it’s more pertinent than ever to reiterate that my biggest fear as an Arsenal fan is that we have no way of controlling our destiny. The board can sell with the best intentions just like David Moores did… but after that cheque is signed and the reigns are handed over, the new owner is free to do as he pleases.

Since the influx of foreign owners in the Premiership, who has done well? West Ham nearly went under, Newcastle were relegated, Portsmouth flunked out of the Premiership, City originally sold out to a fugitive who didn’t have the cash, United are nearly bankrupt… the list of failures is certainly more impressive than the list of success stories.

Allegedly things are so bad at United, it’s widely accepted internally that it’s over for them. The players hate each other, the staff don’t get on and the money has well and truly dried up. The only thing holding them together is Ferguson’s iron fist rule. Theirs a whole in the side of their titanic ship, it’s the size of a coke can at the moment, once he leaves, that hole is going to burst open and sink one of the biggest footballing super powers of the last 20 years. Who’d have thought such a destiny were possible 10 years ago when they were making so much profit, they struggled to spend it.

Bebe and Hernandez are not shrewd buys, they’re desperation buys. Giggs, Scholes and Hargreaves haven’t been replaced because they can’t be replaced. Watch this space, it’s going to be car crash.

Villa are supposedly one of the success stories. They owe Lerner £60million though and they’ve now had to accept mediocrity after he reigned in the purse strings. Birmingham are doing ok so far. Obviously the stand out is Abramovich who has stuck by his investment. He’s still lumbered with a club that’s probably never going to give him a decent return. City could be deemed a success in the making,  I’d like to see if they Sheikh’s are about in 10 years time. City fans should enjoy the good times while they last, that’s the trouble with sugar daddies, there’s always a more exciting propostion awaiting. At least City have history… something Chelsea struggled with.

So what do we hope for? Kroenke doesn’t have the finance to take us to City’s level of spending and he doesn’t appear to have the cash to absorb the cost of the club. This worries me. He doesn’t talk of his intentions and he doesn’t have an emotional attachment to Arsenal. Those two ingredients are very scary especially considering the Americans reputation in the Premiership so far. If you’re over here, it’s for the pay day, if you think otherwise, you’re being naive.

Usmanov? Well, everyone hates him… A mixture of nasty allegations, a murky CV and obviously he’s eastern European. If you look like a Bond Villain, chances are you are, right? Well, I’m not so sure he’s the worst option. He’s an incredible businessman, he has re-amassed his fortune since the markets collapsed and he’s close friend of Abramovich. They all knock about in the same circles, I can’t help but think he’d want us for the same reasons the Russian in West London wanted Chelsea. A bit of an indulgence. A nice company to have in your portfolio. Collapsing an amazing North London club in front of your mates would be pretty embarrassing wouldn’t it?

Then there is Jay-Z. What to make of his interest in the club? Undoubtedly a businessman with a keen eye for a good deal, amassing a fortune of nearly a billion dollars…  However I’m not sure a £4.5million stake in the New York Nets qualifies you to even entertain the idea of running the greatest club in the world.

For me, what will define the club for the next ten years isn’t how quickly we pay off the debt, it’s who takes over the reigns when the board call in their pay day. How can we as fans be assured that this whole stadium move process was in the our best interests? At the end of the day, forget what the board have done, we’ve paid the extortionate ticket prices, continued buying the shirts and supported a flawed on the pitch youth project.

We allowed this to happen, without the fans, the club is nothing. Therefore I think we deserve assurances this debt repayment malarkey isn’t going to be a cyclical norm in the future.

Paying down the debt just for it to be topped up to the tune of £600million once the board have sold out is not a proposition I relish. The new stadium might lack soul, but the club still retains it by the bundle… what are the current board going to do to preserve and protect the soul, future and everything that is great about our club?

I’ll tell you on the 22nd of October because I’ve submitted it as my question for the AGM.

Check out Kyles Euro 2012 piece over at The Real Arsenal for a bit of international reading.

I see everyone’s reporting a fully fit squad after the international break? LG told you that two weeks ago here… stick with us, you wont go wrong!

See you in the comments!

Are we linked to Romelu Lukaku, the new, new in world football?

October 6, 2010

The one they are all talking about, Romelu Lukaku, the one that they all seem to want including the chavs and Maureen, is finding Arsenal the club he most wants to join.

So at 6’3″ he seems to have the presence, he has scored 6 goals already this season and 18 last, he’s African and he’s 17 years old, so he ticks all the boxes and I must say he excites me, but do we need another 17 year old or are we inviting more injury prone players?

Okay, yesterday I got accused by one Grover of being boring, that my posts are becoming repetitive, others said it was my best yet, you can please some of the people some of the time, you can please some of the people all of the time, but you know what, you can’t please all of the people, all of the time, who said that? That’s right, Odeon Cinemas 1969.

I can only write stories if something happens, and apart from transfers and results a lot hasn’t happened.

Our manager says the same things after each press conference so I hope the same people that criticise me for being repetitive go onto Arsenal.com and criticise him, need some reminding…

I believe in this team

This team has great mental strength

We have learned a lot from this defeat

We will try and win this game

I value intelligence over any other quality

He has an ankle problem we don’t know how long he’ll be out, maybe 2 weeks

I can’t compete with Chelsea

If I buy him, it will kill him

So moving swiftly on let me ask you all about project youth, money and injuries.

I believe that we get so many injuries because we play these youngsters against men far too early, in the George Graham days, very few made their debuts until they had turned 20, when they were that age they were men, then they got their chance and if they were good enough, they played and then their salaries reflected that.

So we not only play them too early, they get their bodies banged up and never really recover, look at our list, Cesc (16) Theo (17) Gibbs (17) Frimpong (18) Bendtner (17) RVP (19) Ramsey (17) but we pay them far too much too early, see where this is going?

When we won the league in 1971 we used 16 players, played 64 games on shocking pitches against the likes of Webb and Charlton and rarely had injuries, I think Charlie George was our youngest player and he went home on the train.

We spend no money on proven talent because we buy young talent but don’t be fooled by that, we pay top dollar for those kids, Denilson cost us £3.4mil when he was 17, then add their wages, so how much do we really spend?

JET got arrested for driving around in a Mercedes Maclaren when he was in the youth team, so what was he earning? Add up the 50 plus under 21′s we have registered and you can only imagine what we really spend.

Anyway, this post was for you to debate, do we have too many young players and that’s why our injuries are so high, and is that why it’s nonsense to peddle the ‘we have no money to spend rhetoric’

Add it up. We have spent bundles! And still are.

Have a great day Grovers and see you tomorrow!

Bobby is back and you know what? He looks good in training.

October 5, 2010

Actually boss, he looked quite good when he was 31 and playing for us!

There can’t be any truth in this rumour, he’s 37 and the only thing I can think of is he is back to help with the training.

So what has gone wrong so far this season, we know we didn’t sign the players we needed, but come on, we made £50mil profit and that is far more important, we did try for a £2million keeper, but spend any more than that and it will kill a younger player.

We are in the top three richest clubs in the world and we lost out because we only wanted to spend £2mil on a keeper, we sold Ade for £25mil, didn’t we think spending a bit more on a keeper was worth it? It’s hypocrisy on a massive scale, either that or unintelligence or maybe a bit of both.

I do have to laugh when I hear that had we signed a player, then Wilshere wouldn’t have got a chance, that’s like saying had Barca signed Henry then Messi wouldn’t have got a chance!

Now comments like that insult our intelligence!

With players like Gibbs, Wilshere and Ramsey, you can see they’ll be world class, much the same you could see Bergkamp, Henry, Pires and Vieira would be world class, but players like Song, Diaby, Almunia, Clichy and Fabianski, come on boss, how long do we wait and how long do we give them? It’s been over 5 years and none of them are better than ordinary, and some of them totally lack intelligence. And we know how you value that.

If Song was the most improved player last year after 4 years of trying, this year he has to be the most ‘lost it all’ player.

All I have ever said is play the best team, buy the best players we can afford within the budget and see where it takes us, we benchmark ourselves against the chavs and the mancs each year to see how we’ve improved, and you know what, for the last three years we have still been beaten by them, so how have we improved? All we have done is got older, some improvement.

It’s time that Wenger realised that some of his squad haven’t got it, time to have a clear out, time to realise some of our team are just average. Song isn’t an Essien, Diaby isn’t a Vieira and Clichy isn’t a Cole, give it up Arsene and have a rethink before another season has gone down the shitter.

I get sick of reading we don’t want to be another Liverpool, Leeds or Pompey, buying great players doesn’t mean going bust, buying bad players does that, we for the last 4 seaons have needed a keeper a DM and a golascorer, nothing has changed, we still need them.

Cesc has joined Robin, Theo and Diaby as a perennial crock, time to realise that’s it, they won’t stop getting injured, that’s them, and it’s obvious Cesc will be off, and the way it’s looking he will only be good for half a season anyway, so what has that cost us if we are so concerned about money?

Every pre-season we all believe and every season we are all let down, what happened to the days when we used to go to Stamford Bridge thinking we could win?

Yes we play keep ball well, yes we are pretty, then what, no end product that’s what.

I still think Chamakh will come good and once we get Theo, Robin and Cesc back we’ll be a match for anyone, but they will never be fit for a season and that is poor management and poor planning. It’s unintelligent.

Either that or we have a crap medical staff and they train with mountaineering boots on.

Arsene is loved by the board because he makes them money, he says we need to be financially prudent and then pays average players unrealistic wages, that’s not prudent, that dumb.

I don’t mind if we don’t make gazillions, I don’t want to go bust, but there has to be a meeting in the middle, Arsene another season of this and you will screw up your legacy, don’t be silly, admit some of the players you have are not that good, be ruthless like you were with players that were that good, like Pires, Henry and Cole, yes you may have made some great finds, but you’ve lost some greats as well, one of them supplied the cross for the first goal on Sunday, remember him.

I don’t want to write every post like I’m never going to be satisfied, but I am getting fed up paying shed loads of money to line your pockets and listen to your constant condescending lectures on financial prudence, I’m sure you get paid huge amounts but never say no, sorry boss that’s far too much, after all, I’ve won nothing.

Thank god for the Ryder Cup, at least my week wasn’t totally ruined.

Have a great day Grovers, at least full time crock Diaby will be fit for France, phew that’s a relief!

GHD ALERT: Prince of Profit fails fans as his team flunks at Chelsea. Ratings and review

October 4, 2010

We all knew what was coming. Put the London derby bravado to one side and tell me you honestly expected us to go to Stamford bridge and come away with a stunning victory? I didn’t. It’s disappointing that Arsenal have slumped to such a level where I have no expectation of victory at Chelsea.

I said yesterday I don’t read the Wenger press conferences because it’s an exercise in repetition. Ground Hog Day (GHD) arrived early this year despite the hype whipped up after victories against some average teams.

It is true that we had plenty of possession today. What does it matter though? You don’t congratulate Stoke for their trademark brutality or Blackburn for their long ball. It’s how they play. We train almost solely on our short passing game and possession football, so it’s a given we’ll generally have more possession and make more passes than our opposition. Trouble is, our style isn’t a winning formula any more, it needs top class in every position and it needs power. We don’t have a squad with enough depth and we’re not organised enough to play against better teams.

What counts in football is the result. We were toothless today and hardly troubled Cech at all. I said before the game we’d have to have our shooting boots… they were clearly missing. Cech wasn’t troubled all day. Wenger had this to say,

“We dominated this game quite surprisingly in my opinion. It was surprisingly easy. But we go home with zero points.”

It’s amazing that Wenger can talk about a surprisingly easy 2-0 loss against Chelsea. We had a lot of the ball, it didn’t matter though, Chelsea are so well organised they can afford us possession and they know we’re unlikely to find a way through when we don’t have our best players out. When we don’t have the finer more refined cogs in the machine working, we become very predictable and laboured to watch.

There was some poor refereeing to contend with. Drogba looked offside in the build up for the first. Mike Dean thought the Malouda stamp on Sagna was ok and moments later he deemed a clumsy lunge by Essien on Diaby’s ankle acceptable. The Frenchman came back on, clearly he had France in mind for next week.

Chelsea weren’t great today, don’t allow anyone to fool you into thinking otherwise. They scored a fluke back heel that Drogba certainly had no idea about and Alex scored the freekick of his life. If you look at our chances, it’s incredible we didn’t get something out of the game. Kozzer headed over from a yard, Chamakh hit a diving header just wide, Arshavin had a rasping shot tipped over, Squillaci and Nasri should have done better with pretty straight forward chances.

No use complaining though. We’re playing top class competition. If you want to win, you have to convert.

It all boils down to one thing. We simply do not have the personnel to win major trophies. Song is not good enough and he never will be. Diaby is so average it hurts. I don’t care if he comes good next season, football is about the now. He’s a player who can barely string three games together and when he does, 70% of his performances are forgettable. Do you rate Diaby on how well he plays or by how well he plays against his usually poor standards? I’m the latter…

There was hardly any service for Chamakh. It was painful watching us crab the ball round the edge of the box waiting for the perfect opening. It was frustrating watching Arshavin do nothing. Where has his explosive side disappeared to? How can one so talented be so liberal giving the ball away?

We’re all whacking skippy over our centre backs yet we’ve conceded one more goal than we had at this point last year. Personally I thought they did well today. There were a few silly mistakes, but I feel more confident at the back than I have in a while. However, you can’t ignore the stats, we’re still conceding too many.

In goal, arguably we’ve regressed. Fabianski played well but lets not kid ourselves he is going to become what we need. Chamakh is an improvement up front, he can’t do it all by himself.

We can talk about injuries and how dreadfully unlucky we are with them, but like I’ve said before, you have to use history to predict the future. Does Wenger not look at the records of Walcott, Diaby, RvP, Bendtner and now even Cesc and think that at some point, we’re going to need to back up for those players? Wenger openly admits he does not ‘believe in history and preconceived ideas’, well perhaps that’s the problem? I mean honestly, putting JET on in the last ten minutes to chase a game is desperate isn’t it (as much as I like him of course)?

If we’d had a full squad on show, I’m confident we’d be talking about a victory right now. The question is… will we ever have a fully fit squad to choose from?

Our current group aren’t robust enough to cater for their brittleness. When Wenger talks about not buying players because of career deaths, he always seems to forget that we’re always short of numbers through the season and injury usually always puts paid to any trophy chance we might have.

The coach has posted £56million worth of profit at the expense of Arsenal being competitive. Shocking as it may sound, I wonder if finishing 3rd last season angered him because we missed out on the extra revenue the 2 qualifying games provide? How long can you accept a manager in charge of a top class club that cares more for profit than he does for trophies?

My hope is that the next time we play Chelsea we have our big boys back. Aaron Ramsey has bulked up and many at Arsenal believe he is a better prospect than Wilshere, he’ll be playing in December. Nik Bendtner is looking very lean, don’t be surprised to see him playing against Newcastle. Vermaelen should be back soon and I’m pretty sure RvP and Theo are penciled in for a return after the break. Plus we’ll obviously have Cesc back and playing.

If you look at our injuries, the bulk are the result of impacts or twists unlike last season where they were mostly soft tissue. That bodes well on the one hand because we’re getting rotten luck, but is counteracted on the other as you wonder whether our players are unlucky or just massively injury prone?

Today’s loss is a hammer blow for our title aspirations, but if we can still be in contention past Christmas, you never know what might happen. It’s just such a shame we’ve got a manager who is so blinded by arrogance and a belief in his silly fight with footballs big spenders, he has forgotten what he is paid to do… win things.

See you in the comments.

Ratings

Fabianski: Bar a shoddy flap at a Clichy headed clearance he had a pretty solid game. There was nothing he could do when Drogba back heeled into the near post by accident. There was little he could do from the Alex freekick. Well, actually, I think a world-class keeper would have done better, but we’re not in that situation so I’ve lowered my expectations. Made some great saves today and kicks the ball a mile. 8

Clichy: He’s a nightmare, he made a few poor clearances, had a wild shot and his constant running into the opposition becomes quite tiresome. 6

Sagna: From a defensive point of view he did really well in the first half with a few vital clearances. He was part of the problem for the first allowing Malouda to sneak a cross into the box. He was pretty poor going forward, still, he’s paid to defend. 7

Squillaci: Out of the two centre backs, I felt he was exposed the most. He was caught out with an aerial ball and it could be argued he should have done better the get the right side of Drogba for the goal. In the second half he inexplicably gifted Anelka a one on one chance which thankfully the Frenchman hit just wide. He was a bit sluggish today. 6

Koscielny: Missed an open goal after 2 minutes becuase he wasn’t watching the ball. Committed the foul for the Alex freekick after a poor Nasri pass and he almost conceded a penalty. He looked tired and he was a touch sloppy. Overall,he did quite well strength wise against Drogba where he more than held his own. 6.5

Song: A weak performance from the Cameroonian, typical of this season. He bottled the Alex freekick, I thought his passing was off but as usual, his game fell down in two areas. Firstly his positional sense is way off kilter. He doesn’t protect the back 4 as he likes to get forward, then when we’re caught in possession he doesn’t have the pace to make it back, or, more worryingly, the motivation. Second issue I have with him is the raft of poor challenges he makes. He’s constantly fouling the opposition and one of those fouls led to the first goal. Also, watch how Song and Diaby prefer to run with the ball instead of making a quick pass, watch how that denigrates our style (WBA game a prime example of this). 5

Diaby: Personally I didn’t think his game was up to much in the first half, others disagreed. My beef with Diaby is that he is no longer a young man. He’s fast approaching 25 and he is still incredibly inconsistent and I don’t think he’s ever sustained any type of form. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet and he’s a massive risk. 6

Wilshere: He had a good game considering his age and the weight of expectation on his shoulders. Mutterings of him running the midfield are off. He was ok today but never really delivered his final ball with enough directness. 7

Nasri: He does a fantastic job of keeping the ball moving and he’s raised his game a few times this year. He also likes putting his foot in, I’m just not sure he delivers in the big ones. Nasri isn’t like Cesc, he needs others to play well to make him look great, he didn’t get that today, but he puts in maximum effort and I salute that. 6

Arshavin: He went missing yesterday. If he doesn’t get the rub of the green instantly, his head drops. He sauntered around like he was playing in the park with his mates, that kills me when he’s playing in such a big game. He needs to pull himself together and start performing every week. He’s dining out on those 4 goals still… not acceptable. 5.5

Chamakh: Needs to get a little more snap in his shooting, there were a couple of times he could have smashed a shot back at goal but he took too many touches. He was an aerial threat today but struggled with a lack of service. Needs to improve finishing. 6.5

Subs:

Rosicky: Excellent when he came on. 7

Vela: Forgetable. 6

JET: No time. 6

P.S. Another weekend of horror tackles saw Ben Arfa break his leg. Arsenal Football blogs need to unite and kick kicking out of football. Time for the ground hog day talk to stop… Arsenal MUST deliver today

October 3, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I can’t be bothered to read Wenger’s comments on today’s game. I doubt he’s saying anything I haven’t read a thousand times before.

I bet he’s talking about how the new boys are ready, how he thinks we’ve got enough to beat Chelsea this year and that we’re going to win the league…

The same old stories are rehashed every year and every year we lap it up like England fans in the build up to the world cup.

‘You know what, something’s different this year, this might be the season Wenger proves us all wrong.’

All this hope comes off the back of no real investment in the squad and no real change in personnel.

Today, is going to be interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, we don’t have Cesc going into an incredibly tough game. We’ve got a new pairing at the back who haven’t really faced a stern striking challenge and we’ve got one of the worst keepers ever to don a green jersey between the sticks.

To say we’re up against it is a massive understatement.

However, we’ve shown some great spirit at times this year and there have been some very promising performances from a number of new faces in the squad. Chamakh, Wilshere, Squilacci, Kozzer are all battlers. To steal a quote from a Chumbawamba song, ‘they get knocked down, but they get up again’, it’s that winning mentality we’ve lacked at times over the past few years. Having people in the team you know will be affected by a loss is hugely important for us. Having players on the pitch that share our passion gives me hope.

We’ve got a plan B going forward today. Chamakh offers a real aerial threat. Arshavin owes us a big game and when he fancies it, no one can live with him. I also think Wilshere is going to want to show the world what he can do on the biggest stage. I expect Song to show us that he is in the same league as Essien. I for one would like to see him boss the midfield today, something I can rarely say I’ve seen him do against good opposition.

Containing the power of Chelsea sounds like a clichéd expression but it’s true. We’ve got to defend as a team, Chelsea are so much more than just Drogba. If we can maintain our concentration, keep the individual errors to a minimum and play with freedom, there’s every chance we can pull off a shock today.

For me, key to us winning is taking our chances. We won’t get many, so we cannot afford to squander anything. Chamakh has been sloppy with his finishing at times as has Arshavin. I think if we’re going to score today, it’ll come from one of those two.

What’s my blind faith hunch? I think Fabianski is going to show us all what he does in training with a miracle performance and I think we’re going to nick a late goal.

What do you think?
