Why did we sign Squillaci? Strikers? We got loads of strikers! You only have to look.

by & filed under Uncategorized.

I was watching the clip of Squillaci playing his first game against Blackburn and wondered why we bought him? He came from a pretty good side that was playing in the Champions league qualifiers, in fact Seville are a top Spanish side, we already had Vermaelen and spent big on Koscielny so where does Squillaci fit in?

I am happy we signed another centre back and have always had the belief that we need 4 top defenders in that position to get through a season and we didn’t just buy him as a spare as 30 is hardly on the heap.

So the question is, did we sign him as the main centre back or the spare, time will tell, but I hope he starts against Bolton so I can see for myself, he looks the part anyway.

The other area for concern is the absence of star striker Robin Van Persie. I love Robin, always have, always will, the trouble is, Robin is always injured, I suspect he’s been injured more in his Arsenal career than fit, I wouldn’t mind betting he’s had more time off than Rosicky, now I’m not having a dig, I’m just stating what I believe to be true, if it’s not, then it sure does feel that way.

So we have to plan for most of the season without him, now I said in the summer that Eduardo should be replaced, I was shouted down in some quarters as I was told Chamakh replaced Eduardo, I said Chamakh replaced Adebayor, however, that’s just semantics.

So I started to look at our strikers, Arshavin (sort of) Chamakh, Theo (injured) Robin (injured) Bendtner (injured) now 3 of the 5 are always injured for long spells so is it time to say that they will always be suspect and start to plan for life without them? I think so, but do we need to buy? Maybe not.

We are forgetting we have Carlos Vela, now if he’s not a striker and we don’t intend to use him, then we should get rid of him, me, I would give him a run as I think he will be a star, but he needs a Denilson type run, not a few cameos, he needs to replace Theo and play in every game, then I think we will see the real Carlos Vela.

We also have JET, he’s a striker, same with him, give him a run, or try Afobe or Aneke, try any of them, but please don’t revert to the lone striker like we did last year with Arshavin up front on his Jack Jones, we have strikers, use them, if we don’t think they are good enough, then have a clear out and buy some, I think they are good enough though and in January, we have Wellington arriving and he looks the part.

And if anyone thinks I use too many commas, sorry, but that’s what they’re for. Punctufuckination, and as I write for a living, I’m allowed the indulgence. Thanks.

Have a nice day grovers, tomorrow Pedro makes an appearance so the wit will replace the angst!

The bloke is nothing more that a parasite on London.

For me i wish they’d just shut the underground down, invest the money in alternatives, and shut it down, put him and all his job-for-life cronies out of work. They could go on strike then all they liked, coz no one would give a fuck about them……35% of the memebership voted for a strike, 35% and yet they still have the ‘right’ to cripple London.

  2. Maqitlarge

and all for utilizing technology (ticket machines over sales staff) DDM.

    Fucking hell, catch up!

He’d rather have an archaic, crippled Tube with too many unskilled employees thats the most expensive in the world than lose a few hundred jobs. Hello? Fucking look around.

  3. Pedro

Maqitlarge, when he used terrorism and the threat of it as a justification for keeping ticket people there… he went even further down in my estimation.

Half the people in those offices are too fat to manage an escalator, let alone help in an emergency.

    What a cunt…

  4. Maqitlarge

haha AT. I grew up there. Just off whitehall lane. Moving to Chingford from Woodford later in the year. How old are you fella? You play (or played) for a local team?

Wardo on here is from our way too.

  5. dennisdamenace

That cunt doesn’t want a modern, efficient underground, it would mean less reliance on staff, which in turn would me he loses the power he has over Londoners.

So, we (Londonders) suffer a high priced, joke of an underground system as a result.

Someone in true power needs to break this cunt, and send him back to being a fucking cabbie….

  6. rooster

I haven’t worked in the city for 3 years now…. what a result…. drive to work every day, 45 mins against the traffic, love it…. better than being at the mercy of that leftie bob crow……… I don’t know anyone who would not shoot him

  7. wardo

that fat cnut must have popped into my local. Beers have gone up 30p each.

  10. arsenesabemejor

On average Arsenal score 21 per cent more goals at home against bottom-half sides with Abou Diaby in the side compared to the team average.

    interesting stat from arsenal.com

HERE WE GO AGAIN – RANT 1

Every Arsenal supporter lives in fear not of Man U, not even Chelsea, No! our most feared opponent is the injury list that for too many years has obstructed our natural development of the team.

Supporters must be wondering how present footballers at the club keep on breaking down on a consistant level.

Serious injuries (Ramsey / Eduardo)aside, every time an Arsenal footballer takes a tackle or falls over, we worry that he will be taken off injured.

Last season when I checked the weekly injury list there always appeared to be around 9 squad players out. Mclintock the great Arsenal captain always maintained that when he played he often carried an injury into a game. As a pro in a mans game this was expected and accepted.

I reckon that todays players (with a few exceptions)are not prepared to follow the McClintock rule. With the advent of agents and crazy wages, the longevity of the player is uttermost in their minds.

Quite simply, the longer the player prolongs his career, the longer the agent and player profit.
A sore shin can be a two week affair, especially handy, if your in the position to walk back into the 1ST team.

Also! players at the Arsenal missing one game appear to be in short supply. It always seems to be a 4 (or more)weeks job.

    THE PROBLEM QUESTION -
    Is it:
A)The Arsenal training and DIET, Including
    hamstrings and groins (probable)

    B)Flatcap Blackburn – Stoke – Bolton players,
clogging us with relish (this has happened)

C)self interest longetivity. ( See my agent)

    D)Other ……………………..

Oh! and just one more thing to say on the injury crisis

    “FINGERS CROSSED FOR CHAMAKH”

  13. A

AT I can see that team starting too, although I think it’ll be Koscielny. Hopefully Vela to come on to get the 4th or 5th goal

  14. zeus

Just thought this Wenger quote was funny……….“The tackle looked quite bad,” said the Arsenal manager. “When you see how it turned his ankle I thought it would be three or four days or it would be four to six weeks.

Hehe. Typical Arsenal physio stuff right there. Either 3-4 days or 4-6 weeks. Cover all the bases. hehe.

  15. silent stan

“”We are forgetting we have Carlos Vela”"

WE haven’t. Who has? and if VP out till end of October why are we having to plan for “”most of the season without him”" why MOST?

you write for a living? good grief,

fabianksi should be sent out on loan, he’s not going to improve at Arsenal at the moment, because he gets very few games.

The pressure is immense every time he steps out on the pitch.

  22. zeus

    choy

Its inexplicable that Wenger is still keeping faith in him. He will never make it at Arsenal. Wenger is really treating him badly and all to make a point that doesn’t need to be made.

Whener he steps on the pitch the scrutiny on him will be higher than in 2014 when 200m Brazilians will demand nothing more than the WC on home soil.

If Eboue was destroyed for his poor play, I fear to think what will happen when Fabianski makes another error and the entire Emirates turns on him in anger.

  23. choy

Zeus.. I don’t think you can right off a GK at such an age.

Fabianksi has problems that can be rectified, but to do that he needs to be playing week in week out.

  24. indonesian_gunner

le grove IS the best arsenal-related blog. much better than those hypocrites at untold arsenal. cheers from south east asia. we have loads of loyal gooners here.

  25. ignatz

    Hi there.

Well, I’m sorry about the comma thing.

To be honest I had no idea you would even notice some idiot on some other blog taking the piss, let alone that you would be at all bothered by it. You have built a big community here, you write some entertaining stuff, you don’t need to be so defensive.

Actually I take my hat off to you for keeping up such a well-loved blog. I certainly couldn’t do it myself, so credit where it’s due.

Sometimes in your posts you display anger towards Wenger or particular Arsenal players that as a supporter I find hard to understand and that I believe undermines the club. Also sometimes your more optimistic and unrealistic transfer fantasies verge on the comical. When I disagree with you, it’s usually about one of these two things. But that’s just me.

Other than that you seem like an honest guy and we have much to agree on. I don’t doubt your love for the club. I hope you enjoy the rest of the season, and hopefully there will be some silverware we can both celebrate.

    Cheers
    Greg

  26. Pedro

Greg, Geoff wasn’t really offended… everything in the English language is about opinion and it’s always evolving… take a look at some of the comments earlier about it!

    Cheers for dropping a comment.

    Indonesian_gunner, well said son!

  27. Confidentgoner

Slow new day today. ben wondering about this continued lack of real transfer activity in Arsenal. Over the years we have gained in the windows rather than spent money.

Sure we have all wondered why Prof Wenger does not just go out and purchase what the team needs? Is he blind? Or does he enjoy being stressed out in the dug-out? Does he think these young guns would become champs? I think none of the above, although for 6mill quid, I suspect that very many managers will gladly take the abuse in the dug-out.

Here is a guy who earns millions plus bonuses just to stay within the top 4. If you want to win a race, you get the best car, not a beetle. The guy just does not want to win and his employers are cool with that. Probelm is that not all fans are in on this. There is a disconnect in this team and the cost will only be known in the future.

Don’t expect big things from this team with the current board and wenger still aroud. Lower your espectation, enjoy what you see..

  28. OPG

It’s been a nice break after the non event of the final day of the transfer window and the fact we’re not signing a new keeper after all those wasted months has had time to sink in.
It’s still disappointing no matter how you spin it, we had the money to spend and everybody was expecting it but Wenger didn’t deliver.

I won’t be stressing over our failures this season which looks likely to happen since we didn’t fix the one position that was holding us back, we also have to hope our new signings prove their quality aswell cause we’re doing things the hard way.
The Q&A shall be interesting I think it’s on the 16th this month.

  29. Honest Bill

We’ll be fine guys. Eboue is gonna have a big season.

No but seriously, it hink this squad would be good enough if weren’t for all the ridiculous injuries that we will suffer

  30. JJ

Good post Geoff. We have plenty of options up front but our defense still looks shaky. JD and the Squirrel shipped 3 last outing. I still don’t rate JD and even if we have Song as back-up, we are short at the back. I perdict the usual meltdown in Feb/Mar if we don’t strengthen in Jan.

  31. rpww

All of last season the complaint was that Wenger didn’t sign a defender and we had no good cover at the back. Djourou was out all season and we had the old and beat Silvestre only. Now we got a good cover, someone that would push the other centre backs, that would raise the competition for the positions and you are complaining again??? WTF?!?

If you seriously think that we can play Afobe or Aneke (who is a midfielder) up front, you’re either being stupid on purpose or don’t have much idea about their stages of development. They’ll be lucky to get a place in the Carling Cup first team this season.

@rpww That’s what this blog does most of the time. Wenger is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

And seriously, are you actually suggesting that we should have 6 (SIX) strikers for one position? Sure, RvP and Walcott are injury prone, but Bendtner is not, neither is Chamakh and Arshavin can play for months with a bad foot. But no, you want ANOTHER striker, just to tell Wenger “Look what a mess you made, we have 4 fit strikers now and 3 of them aren’t going to be happy”.

Seriously, do you even proofread what you write? It makes absolutely no sense 95% of the time.

  34. dennisdamenace

    Holy Cock!

    I don’t know if anyone else has picked up on this already, and i know Myles Palmer is a total knob, but he slipped this little gem in one of his recent posts;

“I gather Wenger offered Almunia in part -exchange for Hugo Lloris on deadline day. How embarrassing is that?”

Now i don’t know if this is true or not, but imagine if it is, what a truly pathetic and unprofessional management team we have!

  35. A

ddm i saw that, not sure whether to believe it, but not sure why it’s either embarrassing in myles palmer’s words, or pathetic and unprofessional in yours??

  36. MickyDidIt89

    Morning all,

    DDM,
What I would like to know is when precisely did AW submit his wish list to the negotiating team. I have heard this story as well, which implies that AW had back up options.

  37. MickyDidIt89

Actually, I really don’t want to go back over all that, as I don’t share the opinion of most on here that AW is to blame for the GK shambles. I always go for the guy at the top.

  38. dennisdamenace

After what i was told MDI89 i’m leaning towards believing that the real culprits in this GK fiasco were in fact the Yank and his cronies……

  39. dennisdamenace

Anyhoo, what’s done is done. However, to be goinf after Reina and Lloris makes sense, but Schwartzer too, in the same sentence as the first two, bizarre!

  40. MickyDidIt89

Yank and Cronies. That is exactly what I was saying.
Anyway, moving swiftly on, and today is the biggest sea tide of the year and hence the best day of the year to catch lobsters without the whole wetsuit and snorkel malarkey!

  41. dennisdamenace

Just to change the subject, ‘slightly’…..

Goalkeepers!! Now i know Fabianski is a complete road accident, and should be (minimum) loaned out, but does anyone remember the performance he put in away to Liverpool, particularly in the first half, i believe when we drew 4-4? If it wasn’t for him alone we could’ve been 4-0 down inside the first 30 minutes!!

  42. MickyDidIt89

    DDM,
Pedro told us early in window there were stories about Reina and Mascherano. We all know about Schwartzer and I too have heard the Lloris story. So simply put, I reckon AW handed over his wish list quite early and the Yank fucked up to deliver.

  43. MickyDidIt89

I now have this horrible image in my mind of you trawling London’s hotspots all sou’westered up. Still, there always were clubs catering for the more specialized tastes.
