Keeper on his way? – Superstar decline – Why we should buy big!

August 11, 2010

Good morning Grovers! I hope you all took time out to read El Tel’s early morning rant, superb effort there, I hope you’ll all agree!

Onto today!

First up, it appears Carvahlo has moved to Madrid for a reported £6million. Jose’s first signing from England this term and a nice piece of business considering the defence they have over in Madrid. I mention this because it has a three-fold meaning.

Firstly, just because a player is over 30, it doesn’t mean you have to release them for a free transfer. Arsenal seem to be very keen to control every penny when buying a player, but when releasing a player who has earned staggering wages over the length of their career, we’re shouldn’t be so happy to let them go for a free.  Pires, Sol Campbell and William Gallas all spring to mind when I think of players we’ve let go for nothing out of love.

Secondly, it’s exciting to see that Chelsea do appear to be falling apart. They’ve lost nearly all of their pre-season games and now they’ve arguably let their best defender go, not to mention their captain has lost all his pace and confidence. I’d love to think it’s over for them, but they’ve got deep pockets and no doubt a £20million signing will come in.

Also, as one of the Grovers pointed out last night. Chelsea bought him for £20million, sold him for £6million and had 6 seasons out of a player who brought them huge success. All for £14million. That’s a good deal and shows you that buying top quality for a large fee can bring rewards.

Man up Arsene and take the plunge with a great keeper like Reina, you seriously can’t lose.

Our squad is looking exciting in a tragic kind of way for the Liverpool game. For the life of me I can’t understand how Wenger can have any justification for leaving Robin out of the Liverpool squad when he had nearly the whole of last season to rest and catch up with his friends and family.

Though Cesc had more of a season, he still had March and May to recover when he wasn’t playing for Arsenal. Factor in he played about 26minutes during the world cup. I can’t for the life of me understand the logic in risking the opening game of the season by fielding a HUGELY inexperienced side.

For starters the psychological blow would be terrible and kicking off a league campaign with a loss against a hungry Liverpool side isn’t going to do us any long term favours, especially when confidence is clearly so fragile in this group of players.

There are big worries about Frimpong in the Le Grove comments section. People who’ve watched him regularly for the youth team believe he has great potential but they have zero trust in his ability to stay disciplined, to control Liverpool’s attacks and to make accurate passes. This was news to me, but the Legia Warsaw game hardly filled me with confidence. Roy Hodgson is doubtful to field a team capable of conceding five… us on the other hand, well, you just never know!

With only a few days before the season kicks off, I thought I’d draw you a to an interesting point that kind of rams home a something Geoff and I have tried to communicate over the past few seasons.

People talk about the ‘bigger picture’ when trying to justify our lack of spending and investment in the first team. I understand we’ve got debt to pay off, but the fans were never told the intention was to pay the mortgage of in 6-7 years so the board could make maximum revenue when selling the club.

Le Grove isn’t fussed about how much money the shareholders make despite Geoff owning some shares. What we’re worried about is the long-term revenue streams of our club. More specifically, the revenue you make from your future fans. How draw these people in?

Well, firstly, you ensure all new fathers have the guts to force their children into supporting the mighty Arse. I know that was my fate. No Christmas presents was the threat… the confiscation of food and water is probably the tipping point.

What about the dad’s with no gumption? What about couples where football isn’t a priority, you know, scrabble on a Saturday afternoon types? What about the dreaded dads who support ‘football’, or like…  *cough…rugby? Who are their kids going to support? I’ll tell you who… whichever team is winning the most. Whichever team has the most exciting players. Whichever team all the other kids are supporting in the playground.

You might say we don’t want those types of fans. Well, I’d tell you to grow up with that kind of attitude. There is a reason that kids like crappy pop music, it allows them to fit in and gives them an easy ride at school. At the moment, I can assure you, kids who support Arsenal will probably be getting a ribbing. My girlfriend knows nothing about football, bar Arsenal don’t win anything… she gets a right hander everytime she says it, but that’s besides the point (Jokes…).

If you want to secure future revenue streams, you have to invest in something other than 17 year old kids. Making superstars shouldn’t be a 5 year process. It should be a 1 season process like it used to be. Just back up this point, I found article on shirt sales and I’ll give you the headline figures.

2007-08 – Adebayor, Robin Van Persie, Cesc Fabregas

2008-09 – Fabregas, Walcott, Robin Van Persie

2009-10 – Arshavin, Fabregas

So what does this tell you? Well, it tells you that this is the first season out of five that we’ve lost a bit of pulling power with the youngsters. We’ve never been a team renowned for shirt sales, but I’d bet you a fiver we had more in that top ten back when we had great players all over the pitch. It tells you that regardless of what you think of Arshavin, the guy is a superstar and kids love him. It tells you that the Walcott kids books don’t do him any favours even with a world cup coming and that £6ok a week hasn’t seen the expected return.

Kids are fickle, I mean, having Adebayor on your shirt after one good season despite his lack of talent shows you what a top striker can do for your shirt sales. Is it any wonder that in a season where none of our forwards scored more than 15 goals, we don’t manage to have a striker in the top 10 for shirt sale? That says that kids don’t buy shirts on potential (Theo shirt sales exploded on the back of the Croatia hattrick)…

So what’s the on cost of Wenger not spending? Why doesn’t anyone see the bigger picture there? Why is a team that boasts the 2nd most exciting brand of football in the world not more represented with shirt name sales and shirt sales in general?

Are the people looking at the bigger picture actually looking at the smaller picture?

P.S. Schwarzer has put in a transfer request. No source, but it wouldn’t surprise me!

George Graham: How F*cking dare you…

August 11, 2010

A quick warm up post from a resident Grover over the past few years, El Tel. He’s an Arsenal steward, an ultra passionate fan and someone I can say we have had to ban from the LG comments section on occasions for taking the passion a bit too far! Anyway, this rant was too good not to share with the masses, ear muffs for those who are against blue language! Enjoy…

I get the f*cking hump when I read kids on multiple domains dismissing GG and what he gave to Arsenal.

George Graham was then what Maureen is now, yet the kids hero-worship the flash c*nt?

GG was a great tactician who inherited another great tactician’s youngsters (Don Howe).

I hear the average players being mentioned when reminiscing about George’s reign but I don’t see too many people mentioning the greats? Well, for the benefit of those who weren’t around to remember, here are a few…

  • David Seaman
  • Lee Dixon
  • Steve Bould
  • Alan Smudger Smith
  • Nigel Winterburn
  • John Jensen (Yes he was good)
  • Stefan Schwarz
  • Martin Keown (Re signed)
  • Ian Wright
  • Kevin Richardson
  • Brian Marwood
  • Anders Limpar
  • John Hartson

I guess these were average were they? There are more but I am too angry to think.

He also helped great players like Rocky Rocastle, Mickey Thomas, Paul Davis, Tony Adams, Paul Merson, David O’Leary,  John Lukic enjoy great careers, again there are more, but I’m too angry to remember.

The Mancs play with average players even today Brown, O’Shea, Fletcher etc yet they are lauded as great. They win things because they cheat FACT. The Manc c*nts drink and smoke (Rooney) yet that’s ok is it?

F*ck off all you GG haters, the man has ARSENAL in his blood man and boy. He still loves us even after being hung out to dry regarding the money scandal.

We would have won lots more with GG as Manager even if the style of football doesn’t correlate with what you’re being served up today.

We are becoming the Spuds of yesteryear playing great football but winning f*ck all.

GG did sign some duds but not as many as Uncle Arsene has.

Diawara some dodgy forward, Garde, Grimandi, Vivas, Stepanovs, Cygan, Almunia, Flappy, Denilson, R.Wright, The fox in the box.  Shall I go on, becuase I assure you I could.

GG also came a gnats away from going unbeaten with an unlucky 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge, something else we all tend to forget.

The Children who think football started in the Wenger years should buy a book or a DVD called the History of Arsenal. You might then realise what a great great club you actually support.

Liverpool next week, let’s see who is more scared! How is Roy f*cking Hodgson all of a sudden a great manager?

F*cking hilarious, that’s all they could afford!

Anyway, up The Gunners. Come on you Reds!

Pedro will be back at 0900 with today’s post!

I’d rather be a gooner than a cock-err-ill, sign him up Arsene.

August 10, 2010

That’s what Serdar Tasci the young German said, good enough for me, sign him, or Sackho, Zapata, Cahill or anyone that exceeds 6′ and has played at some stage of his career as a centre back. Tasci said he’d sooner play for Arsenal than the Spuds, top man. HAVE HIM!

Even better sign a keeper that can keep, we haven’t got one, except Chezzer or Mannone but they are a little young.

So someone needs to explain to me how Cesc can’t play for us as he’s not fit and too tired but he can go to the other side of the world and turn out for Spain, why doesn’t Wenger say no?

Still if they don’t play and Song, Denilson and Diaby are all injured, he’ll play Wilshere and Frimgpong, I’d be okay with that, but again, why are we starting another campaign with 3 defensive midfielders beginning the season as they finished the last one, injured? Will he never learn?

Let’s experiment with the team for Sunday, this is what I think he’ll do…

Fabianski

Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Clichy

Frimpong

Wilshere Nasri

Arshavin Chamakh Rosicky

Me I’d try this…

Chezzer

Eboue Djourou Vermaelen Gibbs

Frimpong

Wilshere Nasri

Walcott Arshavin Chamakh

If we are going to go in with half a team then lets try it with half a team that can run at them. I know what you all think of Walcott, but he and Arshavin do like to play against them, and they have an ageing group that we can get behind.

I like the teams we played with at Highbury, the we’ll score more than you sides, it’s the only way we’ll win anything this season, I think we’ll win the Carling because we won’t have too many babies in the squad, at least with these confusing new rules I don’t think we will.

Serdar Tasci is the sort of player we could do with, aggressive and German, we aren’t likely to buy Cahill as they won’t accept Wenger’s £2 million valuation and sending an England player out on loan is as dumb as buying an unknown French defender for £10mil, oooops!

At least the chavs look crap and City have been struggling so we only have the spuds and mancs to worry about, getting back to the injury and fitness stuff, we must be the only club in the EPL that has 5 injured first teamers and two unfit ones, so that makes 7 first choice players out of 11 that won’t make the opening game, unbelievable, what will happen by the time we get to November?

Who are the 7? Bendtner, Song, Denilson, Diaby, Ramsey plus RVP and Cesc from the unfit camp. Yes I know you could argue that Bendtner and Ramsey are not quite first team, but you get my drift. Blimey, even Ledley King is fit!

There were a few Grovers on yesterday saying it’s not fair that the board won’t give Arsene the money to buy, GIVE IT UP, HE’S ALREADY SAID HE FINALLY HAS THE MONEY TO COMPETE WITH CHELSEA. It’s down to the manager and it’s so obvious we need some players even someone like me, that is the king of FIFA football manager can see it, well me and every ex player except Bob Wilson that is.

Have a great day Grovers, countdown begins.

Spahic, Sakho, Mexes, Zapata, Reina and Given… When will it end?

August 9, 2010

Arsenal are once again being linked to a number of players, when will we realise that we are a big team and we need big players? Given I like, but I would have liked him 2 years ago, he will still be a good signing until Chezzer is ready, but will he admit that what we have is not good enough, going after Shwarzer has already told our keepers they aren’t good enough, what that has done to their already fragile confidence is beyond me, but even when we had the impressive young Pole in for the second half our defence still wasn’t good enough.

We need a tried and tested big centre back, not an ageing Bosnian that plays for a rubbish French side, Sakho I would have, Meretsacker I would have, Cahill I would have, I would even have Mexes or Zapata, but I sure hope we get someone, Koscielny is very similar to Vermaelen and a good buy, but not good enough to line up alongside him. Djourou is a crock and although I like him, I’m not sure he will make it.

Going forward we are as good as anyone, but defence has been our problem for the last 4 years and we don’t appear to have done anything about it, again.

We have Diaby, Song and Denilson that haven’t played one game in pre-season and that’s a worry, I don’t want to go into another season wobbling at the start, we still have time and I really hope he spends some money, there is no justification for not, especially after watching us leak 5 goals in a pre-season friendly against a championship side, I can’t remember us ever conceding 5 goals against a rubbish side, ever, and it’s reminiscent of the time we went down 6-1 to the Mancs when we had Igor Stepanovs in the side.

Signing a Premiership defender would do it, Cahill would cost little in relation to winning the league, and he wouldn’t break the bank, he’s been called into the England set up and is highly rated, I’m sure if we offered Jack Wilshere on a 6 month loan we could get him for a song. Not that I want us to do that, but knowing how tight the club are, a deal like that may do it.

I would also have Sakho, or Zapata or Mexes, anyone tall that can tackle will be better than what I saw against Celtic or Warsaw. Come on Arsene, get one of those guys, we are Arsenal, we have the money, we aren’t asking for a £28million player, just one that knows how to defend and a keeper.

PLEASE!

I think we look as good going forward now as we did when we had Dennis, Robert, Freddie and Thierry, add a couple of decent players and we can take the prizes, Man City will be up there and so will the Mancs, Chavs and the Spuds, don’t let pride get in the way.

A final word goes to Pep. Pep, you must be the only decent thing alive crawling around in Catalonia, well done mate. Nice to see a decent person emerging from a cess pit of classless scumbags.

What was interesting though was what Barca player Xabi said about Cesc, ‘We’ve given up on the idea of him arriving now, but maybe he’ll come in January when Arsenal are out of the Premier League title race, their team are just not competitive’ Now, not that I care a rats arse what that inbred twit thinks, but it is funny that he used the word ‘not competitive’ and we would be out of the race by Christmas. Hmmmmm.

Nothing on now until Sunday, when we take on Joe Cole’s scousers, win up there and I will begin believing, taking the team I saw on Saturday and I can only see one result, we won’t play against another hapless keeper like that again this season, unless of course we loan one of ours out!

Finally maybe someone can tell me in a season of restricted squad members, why on earth we need four Goalies? Have a great day grovers, maybe things will start to happen today.

Kos chiel knee off the mark and Wengers learns from last years problems

August 8, 2010

Learns bugger all that is, what an absolute joke defence we have, Koscielny adds what exactly? Apart from opening his goal scoring account, shame it was in his own net though.

Chamakh’s nickname was the plank in France, I’m guessing we’ll be giving that one to Fabianski after this game.

What this game showed us is that Fabianski is even worse than we thought he was, if we play Liverpool with that team we’ll get hammered.

Nasri looked great as did Chamakh, when Chamakh got the score back to 1-3 he held of four players, laid it off to Nasri, who whipped it back in the box for a Chamakh header, superb.

Chezzer came on for the second half and it only took our woeful defence 3 minutes for him to show how good he really is, in fact he’s as good as Fabianski’s bad, he pulled off a fantastic double save, awesome. Kept us in the game, no doubt.

No wonder they nicknamed him ‘The wall’

Shortly after that, a Vela free kick saw Eboue of all people, nick in behind the keeper to head in, 2-3.

54 minutes and a Clichy howler let in Manu who was bearing down on goal before Vermaelen hacked him down, no penalty, what a let off, we should have been 4-2 down and with only 10 men left on the pitch, lucky, lucky Arsenal.

Well Eboue scores a blinder, on 60 minutes he receives from Wilshere and waits for the keeper to move, then he lets rip 3-3, see you Theo I’m afraid.

2 minutes later and Legia start defending like us, a ball over the top sees Gibbs rap one in the roof of the net from the left wing.

76 minutes and Koscielny’s ball watching allows them an equaliser, Arsene, whoever recommended this bloke, you need to sack, was it the same scout who suggested you bought Stepanovs?

80 minutes and a flick on sees JET hold off their full back and smash the ball in 4-5 to the good guys.

83 minutes and Nasri is rewarded for his performance with a low well hit free kick, 4-6 maybe their keeper is as bad as Fabianski.

An injury time Lansbury cock up sees our shocking defence let in another, 5-6

This is Legia Warsaw people, what happens when we play a Premiership team? We let in 5 goals for Christ’s sake, 5 goals, what exactly did Wenger learn then from our poor defending last year?

There is no way he had been tracking Koscielny, no way, I bet he bought him sight unseen on the recomendation of his mate Grimandi. He really isn’t the answer, if anything we are worse than last season, we saw the cracks against Celtic, Arsene, you have a week to sort this out, you let 4 defenders leave and replaced them with one who isn’t as good as Senderos.

Even the most die hard AKB can see that we need a keeper and a proper old fashioned centre back, if they can’t, then they can’t like Arsenal as much as I do.

I write a positive post on Friday and then watch this game, stop being so tight, go and spend the money or you will be throwing away another season, what must Cesc be thinking?

I know that Vermaelen was rubbish last pre-season and to be honest wasn’t great yesterday, I may be unfair on Koscienly but the reason is, he’s another Vermaelen, we don’t need two, that’s like having two Keowns, we need a big lump in there that can out jump everyone, we’ve needed that for years.

It’s just disappointing to see we have learned little from last year, 1 week to go and we still haven’t decided which one of our awful keepers we are going with, 1 week to go and we are still crap at defending, perhaps our manager should have spent the summer sorting that out and not commentating.

Still at least Wilshere and Gibbs have been called up by England, I wonder if we’ll keep Jack now, it’s Fabianski and Almunia he should be loaning out, no one would want them though, would they?

Have a great Sunday Grovers, enjoy the Community Shield, we’ll get to see how far they have come!

£20mill Reina bid revealed + the move they didn’t tell you about!

August 7, 2010

Well after weeks of keeping my mouth shut, finally I can reveal the names of goalkeeper and defensive midfielder I was told we were in for.

The Sun has forced my hand by getting hold of the Reina story which was my first name, this isn’t new, the phone call actually happened weeks ago when we were telling Barca where to go (June). So I can confirm that despite the massive sums of money involved, the story is bang on. What the Sun failed to mention that we enquired after Javier Mascharano as well.

Geoff alluded to these players numerous times in his posts to give you clues, but to be honest, he, like me, had given up on the story going anywhere so we thought it’d be best to stay quiet.

That’s why generally I’ve kept calm this summer because I was sure we were going after top names. The Spahic rumour flew in the face of everything I’d heard. I thought, how can we be in for world class players one minute… this guy the next? I assumed we’d done the usual and bid £2million for the pair and offered a years subscription to ATVO to sweeten the deal.

My initial theory was that we’d buy Reina for a princely sum allowing Schwarzer to go to Liverpool which would in turn allow them to buy some defensive reinforcements. I didn’t quite realise we’d be lumping out that much money for him, I thought it’d be a £25mill for the Argentinian and £15mill for Reina.

I’m sure that we’d all forgive the joker Reina for his misgivings if he signed up for the Arse and if a signing ever was going to get the fans going, it would be this one. It would probably be the most effective signing of Wenger’s reign. I’d liken it to walking through the desert for 5 year, living off beetles and lizards… then turning the corner and finding a 3 course meal that Gordon Ramsay had just prepared! You’d pleased because it’s food first and foremost… but damn, that is a great way to end your starvation!

The Spaniard in an Arsenal shirt would be an amazing coup and would satisfy our need for a quality keeper ten fold!

I’m not sure what’s going to happen with Javier, I know he wants to go to Inter, but last year he wanted to go to Barcelona and then Madrid last season. He wants to play in an attacking line up and he wants Champions League football. Remember that Wenger has been in for him before when £7.5million was the touted price. I think he’d be a superb signing for us and he’d give our midfield real strength in depth. The guy has that little bit of nasty in him I feel we sometimes miss. He’s also a bit mad… I like that.

This could be a superb week and if it’s all true, it proves that we’ve now got money, that world-class players can be the future and that we could be the big guns once again!

I told you the two players we were in for wouldn’t disappoint… let me know if I was right in the comments!

Have a great Saturday!

Arsenal, show us a bit of respect!

August 6, 2010

This is an article from one of our more regular guest posters, Old Bird.  Apparently the Members day wasn’t an enjoyable affair for all, read on…

Dear Le Grove,

I’m glad you had a great day in the shareholders area yesterday. We lesser mortals were left standing outside for well over an hour as gates opened much later than planned.  I then had a lot of hassle getting in as the administrative masterminds had deactivated my season ticket from last year as we are moving seats.  Fair enough but they hadn’t issued my new one yet. Great.  I rang to check this yesterday and was told my old ticket would still work. Well it didn’t.

Thank you Arsenal Box Office.

Next, as we were “lucky enough” to be given tickets for the players Q and A, we had to leave the stadium to queue, as firmly instructed, at 1:15 at the Club Level entrance as the session would start promptly at 1:45. We therefore missed the pen shoot out, hit the cross bar, ball kicking etc as we were politely waiting to get into this event.

We were finally let in at out about 2:30.  The players (RVP, Arsh, Tommy R and Eboue) arrived just after 3, so I am told, but as I had to leave at 3 to catch the last cheapday return train home I missed them.  Brilliant.

I find it really depressing that despite the money we all spend as a dedicated supporters the club treat us with so little respect.  How difficult is it to run to time?  If I had organised an event in my job so badly I would be sacked.  What a waste of a day.

There were some good moments. Let me think. Seeing Cesc in red/white looking happy *hopeful face*.  Meeting up with my best Arsemate.  A free coffee when finally allowed in.   Whoopie do.

Oh, but I had an interesting chat with Dan Roebuck about the return (or not!) of Arsenal TV.  How about Gooner fans unite and start a campaign to get it back?

All the other big clubs have their channels and watching online is just rubbish…

Best Regards

Old Bird

Shocking discovery at the Emirates, PuyolIniesta to go on my new home shirt and why Arsenal will win the league and Carling Cup.

August 6, 2010

So Pedro and I went to Members day at the Emirates, as shareholders we got taken to the new WM club and were given a free lunch with wine, very nice of them indeed, would I pay out £10k to join it, no, it was like eating in the works canteen, lovely staff and reasonable food, but £10k, not a chance.

Not to mention the club level fans in that area have lost probably 10,000sq ft. of lounge area, shame on you Arsenal, you have tried to find another way of skinning the same fans and that’s not right. If it was a restaurant that you could pay at on the day, I would have applauded it, but it isn’t and that’s just greedy, there is only so much money the fans will keep on paying and Arsenal may have just found the tipping point. And they package it up like they are giving the fans something extra. Shameful.

I expect it to turn into a restaurant in a season or two. Mark my words.

We sat in our seats and had an official for company, he wasn’t a steward, but he was a top bloke, and strangely, shared our views on recent events, non signings and all things Arsenal, we all agreed the stadium was a great move and Arsenal do some stuff better than anyone, anyway, we watched the team picture being taken and waited to see the players train.

They all went in and were announced as they came out, first out was world cup winner and captain, Cesc Fabregas, he came out to a roar and he ran out like my son did when he played for the cubs, excited, smiling and his kness were hitting his shoulders, he was excited, happy and seemed delighted to be there, what the hell has been going on this summer? He sure didn’t look like he didn’t want to be there, then the crowd burst into ‘we got Cesc Fabregas’ he loved it and clapped back and smiled like he had just won the pools, top, top man. He’s back and he’s back to stay!

Onto the team, I was looking at the players and in particular Denilson, you all know my views, but he’s bulked up, I said to Pedro, what if he has a Flamster season, I remember Flamini and apart from his stint at left back, I thought he was rubbish, then he had a wonder season, when Milan played us last weekend, I thought how much I wish we had him, then I looked at Denilson and something happened to me, I thought supposing he comes good? Hmmm, let’s see, it could happen.

So why do I think that? Frimpong, he has had a great pre-season and for the first time, Song and Denilson have competition and are on the timer, I hope so, I really want those two to be what we lack, an enforcer, a dirty pair of little gits that will show the other teams not to mess with our stars. Watch this space.

Chamakh came on to a huge cheer as did Robin the boy wonder, so I looked at the kids and thought, they don’t look so young anymore and when we play in the Carling cup, they will beat anyone, I really think this will be our year.

As for having Puyol and Iniesta on my new shirt, I think those two tossers have done more for Wenger’s resolve that £80mil could have, I also think they have disrespected us and Cesc knows it, so a big thank you to the pair of them!

Now the shocking news was we discovered Sagna can actually cross a decent ball, he made three crosses that went above knee height and found JET and Chamakh each time, a sign of good things to come.

No, it wasn’t the wine, this all took place before the two bottles that piggy Pedro and I polished off. The down side was Almunia was announced as number 1, and that surprised me, Pedro, the official from Arsenal and I all agreed we need to get a keeper we can rely on, Mannone looked better than our number 1.

So in all, I was very happy with what I saw, I didn’t expect to be, but I was. So why do I think we’ll win the league? Well the Chavs and Mancs have hardly bought, Rooney can’t have another season like the last and both teams are getting older, Terry was shocking at the world cup as was fat Frank, I would be surprised if either of them finish above us. Liverpool will improve and the spuds will tread water as will Villa. Man City have bought way too many players and can’t really play like a team.

So our kids will have had another year together and have bulked up, Nasri looks world class, Robin and Cesc are, Wilshere and Rosicky will give us trickery, Chamakh will be our Drogba and I expect Frimpong, Song and Denilson to provide what we have previously lacked, bottle and aggression.

I also think that Theo will finally prove why Wenger rates him so highly, I know many of you think he’s no good, but I think he will have a great year and JET gives us options at last, don’t loan him out boss.

Koscielny and Vermaelen are great tacklers and read the game well but struggled with the high balls and Almunia doesn’t instill confidence, if Wenger can bring in a big world class (big) defender and a keeper that can catch a ball at set pieces, then I think we’ll clean up. And Arsenal legend Frank McLintock who was a special guest, agreed.

For some of you, me saying that will be the real shocking discovery and not the crossing ability of Sagna.

Anyway, one thing is for sure, we need to play Liverpool with our best team, and that means Cesc and Robin have to play. Finally I didn’t see Diaby, I hear he pulled a muscle getting out of his Ferrari on his way to the team photo shoot. Get well soon Apu, sorry I meant Abu. (not the owner of the quicki-mart in the Simpson’s)

Have a great day Grovers, I have a funny feeling this year.

Arsenal Members day… what would your question be? One out, one in…

August 5, 2010

… and a rip roaring good morning to you!

Today is the shareholders open day. We get to watch the players train, see all the shiny new restaurants and bars we’ve opened over the summer and we get a Q&A with the boss (providing he’s not doing deals). It’s funny, as bad as I feel right now about the squad, a Q+A at Arsenal does wonders for the inspiration. There’s every chance I’ll be on Le Grove later asking everyone to f*ck off and support Spurs…

I’m not sure what sort of question to ask the boss, so any that you have in mind that are reasonable will be welcomed! I reckon he’ll dodge anything transfer related, anything relating to individuals and anything relating to that Economics degree he bought off the internet in his twenties.

The good news is that the rumours about Spahic seem to have been quashed by the French club. I’m hoping that really is the case because I think a club that is selling gold plated seat plaques should be searching for players in slightly more luxurious markets.

Arsenal seem to be intent on giving the fans the Ritz service when it comes to the stadium but the service station sandwich when it comes to the team. They’re investing in everything to ensure our matchday experience is so good you book your seat for the night.

All very commendable… but I’d rather be standing in a shed with a corrugated roof watching world class players week in week out over having my name engraved on my seat. If I wanted to have my name on my seat, I’d carve ‘Pedro woz ere’ using a prison style shank made from a vuvuzela. Check out the Online Gooners take on the offer.

Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration… we’ve got plenty of very good players, it’s the dross that fills in for them that upsets me. When I was sifting through the muppets that were trying to get on the site yesterday, I found it staggering how many were happy with a signing of the Bosnian’s caliber. How many world class players get to 30 without being scouted by someone? Very few…

The retort by so many of the AKB brigade was that buying world class talent wasn’t the Arsenal way. That made me feel a bit sad because that means those people hadn’t supported Arseanl long enough to remember who kicked this revolution off. It wasn’t Arsene Wenger… it was Dennis Bergkamp in 1995. A world class signing at £7.5million. A true great. I still get excited even mentioning the great mans name. What a coup!

Wenger came into town and he had a solid base to work with, he shipped out the dross and brought in the French under 21 captain who couldn’t get a game at Milan but was highly rated all the same. He brought in France’s under 21 striking sensation, captain of the league winning Monaco side, Emmanuel Petit, he purchased the hugely exciting Marc Overmars of Ajax, he lured the Grimster over and the legendary Remi Garde! In his first full season we won the double.

That was done buying world class players, or players who were about to burst onto the scene. The key names all had pedigree. Even Remi Garde captained Lyon and had French caps. So when people come on here harping on about how me asking for world class players is anti-Arsenal, I wonder how long they’ve supported the team?

Wenger has a history of buying amazing players, Freddie was capped, Henry was joint top scorer at France 98, Pires was torn between Madrid and Arsenal, Sol was the hottest property in world football, Lauren was a young international, Gilberto was a world cup winner, Jens was a nutter, Reyes was lighting up La Liga and Wiltord a record signing and international.

The list goes on and on. Buying world class players IS the Arsenal way and always has been on our road to success. That’s why there was very little concern for Vermaelen last year. We knew he had pedigree and we likened him to Keown at the time. This year, there are no worries for Chamakh at all. He’s a class act. The jury is still out on Kozzer but so far so good, he might be uncapped but he’s young enough to improve.

Gooners grand expectations are so prominent becuase Wenger set the bar so high, not because of Chelsea, City or Man United. The Wenger way that worked was about signing world class players, that shouldn’t be forgotten.

Talking of the boss, he missed his press conference yesterday for some unknown reason. I’d like to think it was because he was reprimanding Grimandi for dossing all season when he should have been scouting us some proper players…

‘What do you mean you only have two players on your list! WE PAY YOU TO SCOUT! What were you doing?’

‘Playstation 3 boss…’

Or he could have been doing a swap deal with Galatasary involving Thomas Rosicky and their giant centre back who goes by the name Servet Cetin. Now I’ve seen this guy play a few times as I’m an expert in Turkish football and I watch it whenever I can. What I can tell you is he is a bit of a beast, he’s 6ft 3, he weighs in at an impressive 84kg and he has quite a reputation.

‘He is known as ‘Bionic Servet’ for his determination and passion to push on playing despite serious injuries. In Euro 2008 Servet’s injuries included a torn groin, strained knee ligaments, a broken tooth and a bruised hip bone all at once. He received the nickname ayıboğan which literally means; a man who could choke a bear (sorry Geoff), due to his height and strength. Another nickname used for Çetin is ‘Terminator Servet’ due to the face-mask he obtained after his cheekbone was broken.’

Now this guy is a proper nutter. If you thought the Bosnian slapping a German was hard man stuff, this guy must in all probability feel like a war criminal to you. He was linked with a £10mill move to Marseille last year, he’s played in the Champions League, been part of a strong UEFA Cup run, he’s won the Turkish League twice with two different clubs, he’s an international, he dates a topless German model, all he’s any good at is defending and he’s incredibly strong.

Will he join? Very doubtful, but I’d take him over yesterdays offering and on the proviso Thomas Rosicky was replaced with Honda or a player of similar ilk. Haemorrhaging more experience before the start of the season would be folly in my opinion.

There are more stories in the media today about Cesc being able to leave for £50million if the offer comes in. Well, I’m suspecting Cesc only wants to go to one club and Barca don’t have that cash so he’s unlikely to leave. I’d seriously consider buying in Ozil or Gourcuff now because next year when we need a decent replacement, those two might be elsewhere.

Anyway, I’m off to comb my side parting in. I’ll report all the gossip I hear today in a Members Days Special report tomorrow morning!

Are Arsenal statistically out of the Premiership challenge already?

August 4, 2010

So I posted up my thoughts on the captain of Bosnia coming to join us yesterday evening to a crescendo of AKB angst.

After letting the dust settle, I thought I’d give you a more reasoned analysis as to why I’m still dead against his signing and why I won’t be blindly lapping up his move as a potentially shrewd piece of business.

Firstly, I don’t think a team with the most expensive season ticket in the Premiership should be sniffing around average teams for old defenders (He’s 30 in 3 weeks, he wouldn’t be getting anymore than a 1 year deal if he was currently with us) who’ve had one good season.

He’s clearly not the best defender in France, becuase last week anyone who’d caught one game of Ligue One was busy telling me Kozzer was the best defender out there. Interesting that neither of them appeared in the official French team of the year that Chamakh was in. It was Ciani and Diawara.

The key arguments yesterday seemed to run along the lines of…

1. Bosnia are a great team and he’s the captain of it.

Response: Bosnia are not a great team, they didn’t qualify for either of the last 2 major competitions. They are an average team with a good goalscorer. Without using Wikipedia, a majority of people in Europe would struggle to name 3 of their players. It’s also key to note that being the captain of a team does not mean you are the best player. Take Gary Neville for instance.

2. Trust Wenger to make the right signings

Response: I’ve been trusting Wenger to make the right signings for the past 5 years. Last season we needed a keeper, a  striker and a decent back up centre back. We didn’t sign any of those players and we paid for it when our squad came up short. If you go back over the past 5 years, Wenger has NEVER make the right signings despite our shortcomings being blatantly obvious.

Ask around your friends who support other teams what they think of Arsenal and their transfer policy. If they’re anything like mine, they’ll be chanting ‘de ja vu’ at you.

3. Montpellier fans rate him and I’ll trust them over you because they watch him week in week out.

Response: If you went into deepest darkest Brazil and met a native tribe and they told you the Amazon water was safe to drink, would you drink it?

No? How come? They drink out of that river everyday?

Montpellier fans do not watch world-class talent week in week out and it’s doubtful they are too heavily into Premiership football. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but France isn’t a football crazy nation. If they think he’s great, that has to be put in context… their fans are not used to seeing superb players and I’m pretty sure they thought Ibrahima Bakayoko was an excellent player until he bombed at Everton.

Ben over at Arsene knows (French based I understand) had this to say on him Spahic…

‘Spahic is ok. No more than ok. Could be little more than a slightly improved Silvestre.I’d be disappointed if we signed him’

Hardly a glowing reference from a guy who is into French football.

There is a big fear amongst certain sections of the fanbase when it comes to having an opinion on an Arsene bargain bucket player… you know, just incase they become a superstar. I don’t care how this guy turns out, I’m just disappointed we’re aiming so low in our quest to become the biggest club in the world and I’m pretty upset our season is being gambled on despite the millions pouring into the club every season.

If you think I’m acting like a spoilt child, take a look at what our captain has been up to all summer. Do you think he’s agitating for a move because the level of class in the dressing room is showing him up? Or do you think perhaps he sees another two bob signing as a complete lack of ambition on the Arsenal front?

4. Weight doesn’t matter, what are you talking about?

Response: Well, facts and figures do deliver, so I spent a bit of time doing some research and came up with some interesting evidence about weight and age.

This is a bit rough and ready, so please excuse me if I haven’t got the weights of each player here 100% correct. I’m in the ball park regardless and you can cross reference me against ESPN or the said players websites if you don’t have a life (says the man who compiled this dossier).

Right, firstly I took the weight and age of the first team centre back pairings of the top 2 clubs in each major European league (France, Spain, Italy, England).

Then I took my shoddy maths to the detail which gave me the following table.

Top two clubs league averages for weight and age

The above table shows you that youth can work for you in the Spanish league which perhaps gives you a good indicator as to why Pique failed at United. The emphasis is on technique, pace and passing… not really a power league. Ryan Garry told me that the reason defenders don’t make it until they’re in their mid twenties is because older players are so much stronger. In England and France, the average age of a successful partnership creeps up to 30 plus.

My final table compares the average to Arsenal’s and the difference.

Euro League's comparison to Arsenal

So Arsenal and their current set up are 10% lighter than the best defenders in Europe as it stands. Our centre backs average weight compared to Drogba alone is 23% lighter. The age differential is also huge. To reach to top two standard, ideally, if you took the figures literally, we’d require an additional 21% of ageing in the next few weeks. The average centre back pairing in Europe are a massive 4 years older than our main two of Kozzer and Vermaelen.

Even when you compare us to the Spanish teams, we’re still 7.5% off their averages.

You might point to our lack of success last year with the older heads of Gallas and Campbell in the team as being a spanner in my theory. Well Sol was clearly far too old but his experience was highly valued by all who watched him. Our moody Frenchman was doing pretty well until he picked up an injury late on in the season. If he’d stayed fit, the outcome of our league position may have been different.

My last revelation on the weight issue. How about our most successful partnerships weight average? Well, the 98 double winning pairing of Adams and Keown weighed in with an 86kg average and the invincible pairing of Kolo and Sol weighed in with and 83.5kg average.

So in short, I believe that I’ve conclusively proven that experience and the power that comes with weight DOES matter in top class football. So apologies for not reaching for the Champagne when I heard a 30 year old, 77kg Bosnian with one average year of football under his belt was heading our way…

Hopefully this is all one big lie, the trouble is, we all know this story probably has legs…

Have a good day Grovers, see you in the comments!

P.S. In case you were wondering… Mertesacker wouldn’t do much for our age differential but he’d put us within 1.4% of the European average for a top class centre back pairing.
