I was watching Sky Sports last night, it was the trio of Merson, Smith and Parlour, 9,11 and 13 year Arsenal players, boy they were the days, I remember seeing all three make their debuts, I loved them all and not because they were English, but because they were Arsenal to the core, and still are.
They said there was never more than £50 between the top earner and the lowest paid, but they said they were paid a win bonus that doubled their salary, and that was why they fought so hard to win games, I know we have a win bonus, but perhaps the basic should be lower and the bonus higher, maybe that would incentivise them better, or maybe they wouldn’t sign in the first place.
Parlour also told a story of the squad arriving at Liverpool (I think) the team went to the changing rooms and the rest to the bar, after 4 pints Stewart Housten came into the bar and told Parlour to get his kit on as he was now playing, Andy Linighan said ‘can he at least finish his pint?’ Imagine that now? There weren’t many players playing for us that had Parlour’s passion, pissed or sober!
It seems that we have at last signed Squillaci, but I cannot understand why that business couldn’t have been taken care of in May?
It does seem that Schwarzer is not coming, so go and get Given, we know he wants to come, we want him, what we don’t want is Almunia and Fabianski not least because all these offers we made Fulham, it certainly shows what we think of them and if we don’t sign a keeper quickly, we’re screwed, in which case I would sooner take a chance on Chezzer. We’re also rumoured to be in for the Landreau.
Almunia was still flapping at crosses and had weak punching problems again against Blackpool, so he hasn’t improved a jot, Fabianski must live in a bubble because he thought he had a great game when he shipped 3 against Legia.
So Arsene get out there and get a keeper, Given would do very nicely, but if not, then anyone.

I know some people will read Wenger’s comments yesterday a certain way but I firmly believe he was asked about bringing in any more players and said no in refernce to a defender cause he was just talking about Squillaci and there were rumours about Juan and Ciani still joining. I’d be very surprised if we didn’t end up signing Schwarzer before Tues. Very surprised. Whats likely is he’ll get the game on Sat out of the way, you’ll likely see Schwarzer not included for Fulham again and he’ll make a final offer.
I hope thats wrong then Arsenes because the issue isnt the defence on its own. The defenders are unsure because Al and Fab give them no confidence and they inevitable make a mistake.
The defenders need to have a keeper behind them that will calm them down and let them be sure that if they do make a mistake that he will save it.
When you try not to make a mistake then its always in the back of your mind and makes you more likely to fuck up.
There shouldnt be any need for a final offer. Schwarzer is hardly expensive. We should have just offered the 4m they wanted and got him during the summer. I wouldnt be surprised if we made another offer the same as the previous 2 that got rejected.

Djourou as 4th choice is fine in fact he’s a good 4th choice people tend to forget that he’s had some very good games for us. I think going from Gallas, Campbell and Silvestre to Squillaci, Koscielny and Djourou/Nordtveit means we should be better of in that area than we were last season. Stu I agree and disagree about us just paying what Fulham want due mainly to his age and the fact that Fulham put that price on him cause they know we’re in a need. Apparently we payed 4 million euros for Squillaci and Fulham are looking for 4 million pounds for Schwarzer. It’s not really a fair price but we’ll probably end up paying it. Even though if it turns out Landraeu could be got for 8 million and City a year ago paid 7 million for Given then it begs the question how Fulham came up with 4 million for a 38 year old.
Let’s be honest too about shite being said about we’re a small club cause we’re going for a keeper like Schwarzer, he’s only coming in to do a job for a couple of years til Chesney steps up his progression and becomes our Iker Casilles a goalkeeper of quality for years to come.

I’m not convinced we’re THAT much stronger at CB. DM is still an issue for me. With Frimpong – a youth who is yet to start a PL game don’t forget – out for the season, what’s the excuse for not having decent cover for Song again? There isn’t one.
I would have no problem with Wenger picking Szczesny ahead of Almunia and Fabianski in the event that we don’t bring in quality GK. We’re still vulnerable on the left with Arshavin playing in front of the non-defending Clichy. I can’t imagine how Wenger’s gonna solve that problem. Squillaci’s a decent addition but how anyone could expect to get something different this season from Almunia and Fabianski is beyond me. A new GK is a must if those two are our current preferred options.

I believe Almunia should and will play. My reasons for this are while I do believe Schezney can and will one day be a very good keeper for us, now is not the time to throw him into the fire.
Especially against a team like Blackburn who everyone knows will put massive pressure on whichever GK plays and probably get away with an absurd amount of fouls in the process.
What if Schezney is thrown in and is tormented by Blackburn and has a terrible game? It would shatter his confidence and probably set him back a year, let’s not forget he has no first team EPL experience.

If you pull off a world class save that noone expects to be made then you can afford to make a mistake (generally speaking). But if you let in easy-ish goals and dont make up for it by stopping “sure thing” goals then of course the fans will be pissed off and want a new keeper.
We’re at a point where we’re just wanting a keeper to save the regular shots and they arent even doing that. Its just game after game of the keepers fucking up in one way or another.

The keeper we’re looking to sign isn’t necessarily only Schwarzer, I’m tired of that speculation already, but I’d rather have Scezney in goal and we try to bring in another DM if we can’t bring in a proper top class keeper.

Be hard to drop him too Choy cause in the first 2 games he’s been very good, well disciplined and hasn’t done a thing wrong. I’ve been very impressed with him cause he’s probably realised that his natural position in the team is occupied by Fab, Nasri and Rosicky and on the left by Arshavin and Vela and so he’s been asked to play deeper and he’s had to change his game and he’s done very well. Very impressed by him.
