£100k fines for everyone / Cesc is definitely staying / Training camp goss…

by & filed under Uncategorized.

Good morning and welcome to Monday mornings packed post of Arsenal news and blogging fun. We’ve got loads to get through today, so no time for idle chit-chat… not even time to tell you how devastated I was to find out the office is out of tea bags this morning and how I feel that one small incident might have a profound affect on my ability to perform this week at work. A truly dark day for supply chain optimisation…

First up, can everyone stop suggesting petitions for Arsenal fans to sign? Yep, stop those, stop the facebook groups and the twitter groups. I don’t think I’d have to look far to find which subsections of fans are doing it… it’ll be the British. A typically organised style of inoffensive protest which is admirable, but pointless.

You can’t petition FIFA against Barcelona if they haven’t done a single thing wrong. I think a petition makes the Arsenal fans look weak, it highlights the Cesc story further and it has zero benefit to the outcome of the Cesc saga.

If Arsenal thought for one second any foul play was at hand I can assure you they’d have lodged a complaint on Sepp Blatters table before you could say ‘pass master’ or ‘he’ll be like a new signing’. What the clubs should be doing is lobbying FIFA to change the rules of engagement when it comes to any member of a clubs staff talking about another clubs staff or players.

That would be unworkable?

Well, you might think that, but maybe I could provide a case study.

The NBA has extremely strict rules when it comes to speaking about another clubs players. LeBron James, one of the most highly rated basketball players of recent times is on a free transfer this summer. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks was asked if he’d be interested in the player this summer to which he responded,

‘Anybody would be interested’

This comment had him hauled in front of the NBA Panel and fined $100,000 straight up. A rival official at the Phoenix Suns joked about offering $11million dollars less for his services and he was fined $10,000. It’s hard to disagree with this stance. Talking about a contracted player in a bid to destabilise him is unethical, immoral and it’s an unprofessional business practice.

If FIFA act, it’ll be in the best interests of football as a whole. It will create better relationships between clubs, it’ll stop rogue agents and Chairman sullying the good name of football and it fits in nicely with UEFA’s aim of bringing football into the real world.

However, when managers like Aragones are picking up £2k fines for racist captured on film, you have to question whether a £100k personal fine for talking about Cesc could ever be a reality.

Now the Barcelona stories have taken a nose dive I think this is a good time to give Cesc a few pointers before the season starts.

1) Cesc, we all still love you as a player and a person. However, you’ve got to come out in a press conference and make us all feel comfortable about you being the captain of our great club.

2) You’ve been played like a British tourist in a Spanish time share office. Barcelona have clearly offered you the world in the full knowledge that the only way they’d be able to nab you was if you blackened your name amongst the fans who’ve given you everything over the last 8 years. You’ve been embarrassed by Sandra Rossel and Laporta. You’ve allowed the older boys in the Spanish camp to treat you like a chump and you’ve come out of the situation with nothing.

Arsenal have respected you all summer and in the main, the fans have given you the benefit of the doubt you didn’t deserve.

3) Barcelona not only made a fool of you, they prioritised David Villa over you. If they wanted you so much, they would have bought the future of Spanish football first, then played hardball with Valencia. They rate a 28 year old striker at £10million more than they rate the best creative midfielder in Europe. That is disgusting in my books. They don’t think you’re worth more than James Milner. Pretty harsh I’d say.

4) If they end up spending £20 million of their £40million transfer budget on Ozil, they won’t have any money left for you next year. Your value will sky rocket again and their financial power will diminish once again. Basically Cesc, I think I’m saying the Barcelona dream is dying. Arsenal will never sell you to a team that doesn’t have the funds. If you really do want to leave Arsenal at the end of next season, Madrid and City will be your only choices.

Be honest Cesc… you know both of those are a bad option.

Spend this season with us, see what Arsene can muster in the transfer market and make a proper decision this time next year. My guess is that we’ll probably be poaching Barca players this time next year because the banks won’t be able to loan them another £140million to pay the wages…

The fact is, unless Barca muster £80million, he isn’t going anywhere.

In other news I had a brief chat with someone in the know over the weekend and the feeling in the Arsenal camp is that a centre back is still the priority. From what I understand, Fabianski will still be at the club this summer but Almunia might leave if given the opportunity. I don’t think there is going to be an opening for Chesney at this point.

Jack Wilshere has impressed in Austria and there is a good chance he’ll be given the opportunity to fight it out for a first team place this year. The belief is that he is ready this year… something I think we’d all welcome in the wake of losing out on Joe Cole.

Kozzer is supposed to be a very able player. His technical ability is excellent, he’s far better aerially than Gallas and his positional sense and ability to play a zonal marking system is also excellent. Apparently, there are high hopes that this boy is going to be the real deal although it is accepted he will need to bulk up.

People have rightly voiced their concerns about him versus Drogba. May I just point out that Lucio is hardly a beast when it comes to weight, but he is a fighter and extremely powerful. Aggression and positional sense more often than not will out do raw power.

I can also confirm that Denilson is not leaving Arsenal at this moment in time. Well, if he is, no one knows about it in Austria. Sorry to be the one to have to tell you that…

The keeper stories keep coming thick and fast. I find it amazing we still haven’t sorted that area and I too am desperate for some action on that front, but talk of David James is more embarrassing than setting up a petition to stop the petitions. He was never good enough for a top flight team when he was young, on an individual level his form for Pompey was shocking last season, he’s far too old and he is just as calamitous as Almunia. I know we’re desperate, but come on, David James?!

Finally, as you know, we always have a successful run at the old Fantasy football. Well, I’m  speaking with a respected brand who are looking to sponsor a Le Grove league and for the privilege of doing it they will supply us with three very tasty prizes (Tastier than a crate of Peroni…). All I’m waiting for is for the prizes to be signed off, then we’re good to go!

Almost as exciting as Geoff getting buy in on this podcast malarkey. We’re going content crazy this year!

Right, see you all in the comments section, plenty to talk about!

    Spot on Incesc!

The thing about Theo is everyone I knew Man or Chav thought he’d be the next big thing, he didn’t deliver and now it just seems every match he plays he tries to showcase himself then just play naturally. He should recognize his skill set and utilise it to the max.

As for Eboue he’s one of the best backup players in the world.

  2. Stu

Ebowies proble is the final ball. He can beat almost any defender when he is 1v1, but when its time to play the ball into space between defenders and the keeper he panics and does nothing. Obviously there are exceptions but generally the more defenders or the more options he has the worse he is.

  3. Red Arse

    Incesc,

You are right. I agree that Eboue in full flight is really exciting and skilful.

The he falls over, or dives, or forgets where he put the ball or crosses to the corner flag. And we all go F**k me! :-)

  4. Mayank

One of the things last season was that we never got bullied during open play it was only during set plays that the GK especially got bullied.

  5. incesc

i remember when eboue first came into our midfield when we bought sagna and i watched a game with my uncle who is a hammer.

He asked who our new right winger was and i said “watch him, he gets loads of the ball but cannot pass to save his life”

true to form eboue didnt make a decent pass the whole game and gave it away every time. We were pissing ourselves.

he has improved loads from those days.

  6. Stu

I dont remember any times where the GK got bullied apart from the Blackburn match and that was all Fabianskis fault for dropping the ball under little pressure against Wigwam.

  7. Stu

His first game at right wing was against Inter in the Emirates Cup wasnt it? I remember the commentators saying that it was a masterstroke by Wenger to move him there.

  8. Red Arse

    Can’t argue with that Incesc.

I just don’t think he has improved as much as you do.

Of course, that’s what football fans are all about with different and equally valid views.

I would like Arsenal to have a wing back who could dribble, pass and shoot occasionally. :-)

  9. Mayank

    Stu,
That was an extreme example, I’ve never actually played in goal but there was loads of times when I thought Al should come for the ball and he didn’t. Fabianski gets to the ball but rarely ever gets good connection on it.

Both problems are more to do with physique than technique.

  10. Stu

Mayank, both keepers have problems with crosses. Almunia refuses to come off his line and Fab is off it anytime the ball comes into the box.

  11. leon

stu i dont see anyone bullying verm or gallas somehow i dont see hieght as problem because he could be dont know 7 foot but cant jump so that real mean much its larg part of problem keeper position dont confuse hieght with power and stregth.its pretty claer that this team not soft team by any measn stoke bolton wilves ect have all tried that old tacktick and it just dont work on this team anymore.it would be nice to 6’5 beast though

  12. incesc

i guess its not really bullying when you drop the ball on an oppositions head bouncing it into the goal.

altho bramble might have said something nasty in his ear and scared him

is it bullying when porto cross the ball and fabianski does a flying punch into the net?

cant beleive this guy is in pre season training.

any other top club and he would have been shown the door.

  13. Mayank

This type of deal doesn’t exist, Man U didn’t have one and neither do we. This is just their way of doing thing create a media furore about a player leaving and then when he stays the fans are pleased that they got them for another year.
If they pay £60m next year they can have him, just like they could this year. I’m sure the ‘deal’ wouldn’t have included a discount.

  14. incesc

“I would like Arsenal to have a wing back who could dribble, pass and shoot occasionally. ”

haha this is arsenal red arse, not barcelona

  15. Mayank

Incesc Fab2 needs 1st team experience, the only hope to get a decent keeper out of him is to loan him out. He pulled off some spectacular saves.

  16. incesc

yeah mayank as if we would make an agreement like that.

wenger might have told fabregas he can go next year but next summer he could turn round and change his mind.

  17. leon

the one think about keeper position its confedence its confedence and authority and presence none which fabianki has and thats what is killing him he is very good shot stopper but all that means nothing if have presense or authority

  18. Mayank

It’s not about us doing a deal like that, the provision such a deal doesn’t exist. At best it can be a gentleman’s agreement. But if it’s that then it would be with Cesc not Barca. You see for a gentleman’s agreement there need to be 2 gentlemen involved.

  19. Pat

No, CR had a deal a year in advance. Guillem Balague does know his La Liga news and secrets, whether you like him or not.

  20. Pat

And it wasn’t just Balague. It was the ex-Madrid president as well. United and Madrid definitely agreed a deal a year in advance.

  21. Mayank

If a deal had been struck why were there negotiations about the price. Surely the price would’ve been included in the deal and surely paying £80m would’ve got him the previous season as well.

  22. Pat

Simply because United didn’t want to lose him then! They wanted 1 more year out of him. Its not rocket science.

  23. zee

It seems sport.co.uk are all over the Stekelenburg to Arsenal story. Just check out this killer quote:

Sport.co.uk quizzed the player’s representatives on the phone regarding the reports that Arsenal had officially registered their interest receiving the response:

“We are vey busy doing our jobs at the moment, and we have lots of requests for interviews, but it is not possible at this moment. We are really busy with our work and getting on with our business.”

  24. MARK GOONER

this keeper situation is so fucking boring

its a problem position for us yet we aint willing to spend anywhere near double figures to get a replacment

  25. MARK GOONER

id be over the moon with Stekelenburg
he’s experienced and at a good age

instead wee are probably gona end up with schwarzer who has 1 year left at the top, and we are relying on schhezhny to come through, a guy who is very young and has never had a save to make at anywhere near a good level

what other top club would take risks like that

no gooner is unrealistic and expects 30-40 million pound signings, but to spend 10-15 mil on a keeper that could potentially be number 1 for next 5-6 years

  26. Goonerman

FFS WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STOP NEGOTIATING THE PRICE AND JUST PAY WHAT THEY WANT FOR WHOEVER WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE NEGOTIATING. STOP DUCKING AND DIVING ARSENAL AND PAY UP.

  27. Pat

And if the deal for CR was not agreed earlier, then he’d cost less, because less years on contract = less $$.

  28. MARK GOONER

i disagree, he is solid not spectacular who has spent his entire career nowhere near the top and given his age id rather go and get someone who could come in and potentially hold the jersey for years to come

  29. Mayank

Umm my question was if there was a deal already why were they haggling over the price. Glazers would have sold him for 80m the previous year. It wasn’t Ferguson’s decision to sell him it was the owners’.

That at best was a verbal agreement. I don’t think you can strike a deal before you strike a deal. And I’m sure there’s no verbal agreement between Barca and us. Maybe one between Cesc and Arsene.

  30. A

I agree about the solid not spectacular Mark Gooner, but that’s imo what we need right now.

We’ve gotta stop looking to the future, and do what’s best right now, and Schwarzer would be solid and reliable right now, no risk, no time to adapt, no language problems.

Stekenelburg would be a risk, potentially quality, but also potentially a flop, and take time to adapt to the rigours of the prem etc.

I don’t car about a few years time, all I care about is competing this season. Then next summer we can deal with the following season, and so on

  31. Mayank

Wow Gonnerman, that’s a wonderful insight, stop negotiation and pay whatever the want

    Back in a bit.

  32. A

Yeah I’d agree with that zee, certainly either would be an improvement, and I’d take Stekelenburg, but I’d prefer Schwarzer. Had enough of risk taking and thinking to the future, all I want is some reliability and calmness back there

  33. Pat

Mayank, it WAS SAF who got CR to stay the extra year. Glazers wanted to sell that year so a deal was already agreed that summer in advance so SAF can’t change his mind. Sort of like a promise to CR.

  34. zee

mark gooner – although stekelenburg has no premier league experience I agree if they’re roughly the same ball park, I’d have the dutchie. Also stekelenburg would make the club more money on replica shirts. The printers want joe hart and are having kittens about Szczesny.

  35. incesc

considering how much money we have in the bank and how we have hardly spent anything and the fact that we are arsenal football club.

buying mark schwarzer would be incredibly underwhelming.

a 37 year old who hasnt played in the champions league, has won fuck all, sho isnt in the top five keepers currently in the league…

  36. A

incesc he’d basically be identical to van de sar for the last three years, just reliable, a calming influence, and a good organiser

  37. Stu

VDS has played in and won the CL before joining united. Schwarzer has never played for a team that regularly finishes in the top 10. Unless Boro always finished in the top half but i dont think so.

  38. zee

It’s hard to explain but i’d be both disappointed and grateful if we sign schwarzer. thats what arsene’s done. we cant seriously think we’re gonna sign akinfeev, really hope i’m wrong

  39. Stu

Mark, apparently those at the training camp in austria, the staff, havent heard anything about Denilson leaving. What do you make of that? I mean surely they would know someone is leaving because i assume Denilson, or anyone, would say their goodbyes before going.

  40. incesc

    A

we’ve had this argument a few times.

heres why van der sar is much better:

  41. A

of course we can’t think we’re gonna sign akinfeev zee – wenger would never be so stupid as to sign someone who wouldn’t address our weaknesses in the slightest when it comes to keeping

yeah incesc, he’s certainly been much more successful over his career, but you watch his overall performances over the last three years, and see what he brings to the team, then compare it to schwarzer, they’re very similar.

  42. MARK GOONER

i heard that stu, but my source is a player thats in austria now

    agree zee 100% with

    zee says:

  43. zee

A – akinfeev ‘wouldnt address our weaknesses in the slightest when it comes to keeping’ by definition you’re saying he wouldn’t be an improvement on the matador from pamplona?? That’s right up there A, that’s right up there!!

  44. A

He’d be an improvement overall zee, he’d pull off amazing saves, but he wouldn’t make one bit of difference in terms of commanding his area, organising the defence, or dealing with set pieces, crosses, and corners. At best he’d be the same as what we’ve got in those terms, though pulling out the world class saves at other times that look great on a highlight reel

  45. gooner

Where did the denilson is leaving rumours come from? Please can someone post the original quote

that would be the best news ever, wed concede less goals on the break for sure

  46. Nick the Greek Gooner from Ealing

I’m now of the firm belief that all the while Citeh are spunking more money than sense and previously Chavski and Manure have never been shy with spending big, our esteemed manager will not pay huge fees untill or if we ever do win any silverware.Untill this happens, he could then say how it is his greatest achievment that our squad was on a shoe string compared to all the other clubs and that vindicated his policy of finding youth was correct. Trust me!

  47. MARK GOONER

reggie what ever it was it was too much
is there a top team anywhere that can say they have a worse threesome then almunia, fabianski and mannone

is fucking horrendous and it leads us to talking up young keepers like schzney at least 3 years earlier then we should be

  48. zee

A – either he’d be an improvement, or he wouldn’t make one bit of difference. which one shall we have?

  49. MARK GOONER

nick that is of course what he is holding out for, he wont change his ways now, it will be admitting defeat, which is why im sure he will sign the new contract that will be offered to him later in year regardless of the season we have

we only need imo top 3 players to be ready and confident of challenging

  50. A

he’d be an improvement in some areas zee, but not in the most important areas, the areas in which we’re weakest, ie organising, and dealing with long balls/set pieces/crosses.

We need a big, calm, commanding keeper, not a small, agile, spectacular keeper

  51. zee

mark gooner – yeah – that’s what’s so frustrating – we’re really not that far away. I hope pedro is right about his info, ie targets are real quality. They should be. Pedro – is there an update on that at all?

  52. TinTin

i’ll admit i’m not convinced by akineev on crosses or command of his area but i think his a better bet than schwarzer who is average at best and isn’t much better than almunia also his available at about 13 million thats gotta be worth a punt!!

  53. reggie 57

Mark how long have we been saying that now (only needs a couple of signings) a couple of years at least….

  54. MARK GOONER

i know of nothing coming in, just what i read like you mate

i do know that wellington is coming in jan and ive heard that while training with first team looked awesome and players were told not to mention his participation in training to media in order to not cause to much hype on the boy when he does come

he’s gona be one of the best around according to a first teamer

i hope wenger unleashes him and not send him on loan

  55. iamgooner

yeah cause akinfeev is not much better than schwarzer

    *rolls eyes*

akinfeev has been playing for cska moscow 1st team since he was 19!
he’s been the russian number 1 for a number of years!

to say this guy is only a little better than schwarzer is stupid..

  56. MARK GOONER

fans, media, former players all saying the same thing, cant all be wrong, heres hoping wenger still suprises us in coming couple of weeks

  57. zee

I think akinfeev would be a fantastic signing. A genuinely different class to what we have. That’s what we should be doing, stepping up a level, properly improving, especially in the critically important positions. Akinfeev and a world-class centre-half would transform us.

  58. zee

mark gooner – would wellington be able to play from jan, in terms of a work permit? he’ll probably go to spain for a bit won’t he?

  59. iamgooner

    zee i agree..

he could be our iker casillas
he’s the step in the right direction
he isnt some stop gap has been..
if we get shwarzer ill be disgusted!

“dont wanna delay chesney sszensy’s progress”

fuk chesney! lets not think about the future, lets think about winnning things THIS season!

  60. TinTin

if wenger just spends the man city money from last year he’d solve a lot of our problems
    akineev or stekelenburg 10-13 million
    de jong 8-10 million
and there must be a big strong CB in the 10-15 million price range
could even afford ozil for 10-15 million just in case cesc does leave nxt year
    pity its not gona happen!!

  61. zee

reggie i think sol’s still a great defender, but he cannot be first choice anymore as he can’t recover quickly enough in between games, and he’s at that age where he’ll pick up niggly injuries. Wenger must surely sign someone younger, quicker and fitter as first choice.

  62. reggie 57

Zee@ sol should not even be anywhere near the first team squad imo!! its only due to wenger neglecting his managerial duties that we are so desperate for a world class centre back…

  63. zee

tintin – it’s an interesting one re ozil – werder have said he’s for sale cos he’ll be free next summer, wenger knows cesc realistically probably will go next summer… but I just can’t see it – while it is a concern, it’s not a priority and i hope wenger isn’t worrying about next summer as much as who’ll play in goal and alongside tv at anfield

  64. zee

reg – i wouldn’t mind having sol as cover, he’s dragging his heels surely because we won’t offer more than a year and he knows he won’t start much. I won’t be at all broken hearted though if he signs for sunderland or newcastle

  65. BillikenGooner

If we are going to go into this season with a choice of Koz, Djourou, or Sol as Verm’s partner, maybe we should pick up Vertonghen as a utility defender (CB/LB/DM) despite the horror that it is having another left footer on the squad. He, at the least, has some experience with Vermaelen.
Does anyone know if he can cross the ball? heh

  66. TinTin

zee- i get you ozil would be a bonus signing but you won’t get a player like him as cheap again so think we should go for it!! but we could have all our business done for just over the 40 million we got last yr and have all the issues from last yr adressed aswell!! but like you i just can’t it happening

  67. zee

pedro is there an update on what you were saying about our transfer targets? You know, the bit about them being all good and that!

  68. zee

tintin i completely agree with you, if wenger showed some foresight he’d realise that if ozil for some reason stays in germany, we’ll never get him next summer. And everyone will know we’ve got £50m cesc dough – wenger will be under massive pressure to properly replace but wont want to spend it. Whereas if he spends a bit now he’ll have been proactive and at least helped solve the problem by bedding Ozil in for a year.

  69. zee

I needed pedro to say we’re still in for some decent names, it’s great to hear positive (and informed) stuff like that.

  70. Pedro

Zee, I won’t get much in the way of transfer goss… no one outside the inner circle does at Arsenal. What I can get is get training ground gossip etc…

However, I can 100% guarantee that Arsene / Gazidis would not strike a deal with Barca for next year.

    Never in a million years.

  71. TinTin

zee i also think if we show some ambition in the transfer market we won’t have a problem with cesc next year i think his just got frustrated at not winning anything and arsenal not doing anything to rectify the situation

  72. zee

tintin – yep, old old chestnut.
billiken – boring but it’s a fact he’s left footed so he won’t sign him cos he wouldnt give us balance. Vertonghen even plays left-back for belgium, not a problem area is it!

  73. zee

pedro – do you know the names? Just tell me, I won’t tell anyone. Failing that, could you reveal which country each player plays in?

  74. Pedro

Zee, I know the names of two enquiries and they were both top players.

However, nothing seems to have come of it… so a good job I kept quiet.

It doesn’t mean the names given were wrong though…

  75. reggie 57

A corny joke for you pedro

I bought a dog off a blacksmith earlier
but as soon as i got it home it made a bolt for the door!!

  76. incesc

    do you like MMA Kreshnik?

my mate just got back from Canada and he says a big MMA fight is as popular and a big deal over there as a Man U arsenal game.

ahaaaa … I see now who’s Pedro’s DM guy … that’s actually a gr8 fuckin addition but prbbly we’ve bid half of what Pedro thought we would, 7.5M ????

Lately it’s getting very popular here in Canada incesc. I used to watch since back then in the Pride (Japan) days and got kinda hooked. It looks much violent then boxing tho and ppl complain a lot about it, but it’s way more interesting imo with much more thinking and really like they call it, human chess

So when Pedro says “were” instead of “are” tells you that the deals could be dead in the water.

    Same ol Arsenal allways lying

    :)

MMA is good for the knock outs and occasional broken bones, i can see it getting bigger over here. We fo like a fight.

Toronto, which is mostly a business’ centered city and not that much fun, but economically quite stable and did pretty well during the economic turbulence last year.

You are like a one man Football Rumours clone.

Seriously buddy, how can we take you seriously when you spout this shit on a daily basis.

Dont give it up though as it makes me chuckle and I use its timing to remind to let the dog out for a shit.
