The worst fans in the world…

by & filed under Uncategorized.

This mornings post has been inspired by the numerous people who rolled onto Le Grove stomping their cyber feet yesterday making comments surrounding they type of fans Arsenal have.

Here is an authors impression of how one of them looked.

‘What is Cesc going to think when he reads stuff like this, fans like you lot don’t deserve Cesc’

Now, I want to address that type of attitude because I truly believe that Arsenal have some of the greatest fans on earth, despite the protestations of a few on the web who constantly want to tell us that everyone outside Arsenal thinks they’re moaners (Yawn.com).

Not true.

Liverpool, Man United, Spurs, West Ham… even Newcastle all have the same problem. Everyone moans, it’s a right of passage as a football fan and I’m pretty sure it’s gone on for all of time. Anyone who says it hasn’t is a liar and a thief.

I sat in a cab with a Geordie cab drive in Newcastle a few weeks ago and he told me that he felt 90% of Newcastle fans have been so unhappy for the last ten years, he wondered why they even attended matches. My old boss is a bin dipper season ticket holder. He said bar the massive games, the atmosphere around the stadium has been so poor he finds it embarrassing to attend matches. My West Ham chums constantly p*ss and moan their way through the season regardless of how well or poorly they are doing!

So… everyone does it. Fact.

If you couldn’t have a rational conversation about the good and bad in your club, no one would talk to you because you’d be boring. You know, that same boring you get with super religious people or ultra-Patriots.

So how do players feel about the fans?

Well, the greatest player in Premiership is Thierry Henry. He left Arsenal 4 years ago and he hasn’t stopped talking about us since. He loves the fans, he loves the clubs and he loved his time there. He came back last season to say thanks to the fans for the good times. Patrick Vieira adored having his name sung by the fans week in week out… he’d stop mid-match to clap us! Bobby Pires recently said,

“It shows how great the Arsenal fans are and that they don’t forget their former players. I was really touched and moved by their ovation and the fact that they were singing my name.”

Even Emmanuel Eboue has nice things to say about us!

‘They sing my name when I play and that makes me feel really happy. I say thank you to the fans for coming to support us’

That’s great becuase it means our support is valued. Martin Keown once said if the fans are on your back, you’ve got to look at yourself, address the problems and fight for their respect.

Bang on the money Martin. Adoration isn’t a right, it’s something you’ve got to earn. Something I know most Arsenal player are patently aware of. In the grand scheme of things, having your own song would probably be worth more to most players than a £20k pay rise.

That’s why it really gets my goat when people slag Arsenal fans off.

So what could be classed as a poor fan?

Well how about the Nice  fans who spat a Loic Remy after a bad run of form recently? Or how about the Torino fans who attacked their players in Turin in January? Or the Athletico fans who managed to get their club a European ban for racist chants? The Juve fans who attacked the Milan bus? The Barca fans who attacked Jose (Ok, we’ve all dreamed of that)?

I mean even if you wanted to ignore the extremes, when was the last time you saw English fans waving a white hanky in protest at a player or performance they didn’t like? That’s what the Italians and the Spanish do. How many players stay long enough at these so called mega clubs to get their own chants? How many fans would finance get well soon banners for their young injured superstar? How many clubs have 4287 blogs dedicated to their cause?

How many fans adore their players from all clubs as much as the English (and followers of their respective clubs)! Well… as far as I can see… no one. We’ve got the best fans in the world bar none and I don’t think too many players, managers or outsiders would disagree.

So why if the fans of the mega clubs are so bad do all the players flock to play for them?

Are we shooting ourselves in the foot with our loving approach to football? Do nice fans finish last? Should we take a leaf out of Madrid’s book and boo Cesc like they booed Ronaldo after he innocently said he wouldn’t rule out playing for Barcelona? What do you think their fans would do if Higauin got caught wearing a Manchester United shirt?

They’d probably lynch him.

Now, I’m not suggesting we change the way we are for a second. I’d hate to go to the ground and pull out a white snotty handkerchief on Arsene Wenger for 5 seasons without a trophy.

All I’m saying is I find it incredibly annoying listening to certain sections of our fanbase slagging off the support the players get. They have it easy compared to most other clubs in the world and they should be honoured to play in front of us which many of them confess to after they head to pastures new or retire.

Cesc, you’ll never find love from the Barca fans like you’ve had from us. Sure they’ve got a big fake pair of boobs, collagen injected lips and faux Louis Vuitton bag… but face it son, it’s all been bought on credit and it’s all going to look like a big saggy, ugly mistake in a few years time.

See you in the comments, I’m off to the butchers to find a suitable pigs head to throw at Cesc in the Emirates Cup*!

Geoff is back tomorrow, I’ve heard he’s developed an American accent to fit in over there… don’t mention it when he comes on later!

*Joke

P.S. View here to see the sort of classy act Barca players are. Stick a Spanish footballer under the microscope as intensely as you do an English player and you’ll find out they’re all the same…

has everyone read the story about gallas being sued by the association Tunisian Dentists? my best laugh of the day so far…

  2. Queen of Suburbia

Red Arse. I’m pretty sure you only get your contract paid up if you are being “retired”.

You get a signing on fee usually from your new club in return for making the jump.

If you are sold you probably do have a case to claim the loyalty payment that was due to you at the end of your contract, because you could argue, you would have honoured your contract and seen it out so you should get that money.

That sum for instance is what delayed the Arshavin transfer.

  3. Arsenal Tom

how can anyone think that when you sell a player you pay up what’s left of his contract!?

that would mean having players on long term contracts is a bad thing cos every cunt that leaves will need 10m from us to do so meaning you make no money from transfers!!

other than a loyalty bonus (maybe) the contract is more or less torn up when you sell someone.

  4. gambon

    timao

No one said you pay up a players contract if you sell them.

Forcing a player to leave when he doesnt want to is a different matter.

  5. Red Arse

    QoS,

I wonder why Arsenal don’t have a revanchist strategy?

They tap Cesc up, we tap up one of their players. They get Barca players to tap Cesc up, we as Gooners email (say) Messi en bloc and tap him up.

Having offered Casillas, Messi, Iniesta £1m a week and got them interested we jus say “nah, don’t bother, we couldn’t be arsed”!

Not subtle but then neither are Barca! :-)

BTW, the final sentence of your 15:22 is exactly right. No transfer request from Cesc, implies the club have agreed to cancel his contract and let him go without any coercion or agreement with the player. Hence payment of his o/s contract. (I have said the figures I used were just for example as none of us knows them.

Of course, if timao is an expert in Contract or Employment Law, I would defer to his learned opinion and excuse his “bizarre” comment. Somehow I doubt it. :-)

  6. zeus

    Timao

Hehe. I’m FLABBERGASTED by that story. So I have a toothache and I fly my own dentist out so you are gonna sue me cuz you and your collegues feel slighted?

    MUGS.

How to get even with Barcelona

Organise a “friendly” pre-season with them

Sign Martin Taylor and Ryan Shawcross and put them in the team

Then let them express our sincerest displeasure to PiquePuyolIniestaXavi!!!

  8. Queen of Suburbia

Red Arse – in other fields of business if I wanted to sell a division to a competitor. I do so.

The staff effectively go with it under Tupe protection meaning that their exisiting rights of employment are protected including salary.

I do however have to offer a redundancy option. If my employee does not wish to transfer to competitor.

  9. Arsenal Tom

of course you can force a player to leave… look at ade, we wanted him out and he went, clubs do it all the time. you just tell them “your not in our plans, find a new club” and they will. easy

  10. Gooner

Dutchman, havent seen much of affelay, but i know hes highly rated and seemed to link well with RVP in NL world cup warm up games. At 24 he isnt too young, but approaching his best years

He would be vastly better than cole

  11. gambon

    QoS

But youre selling the business, and an employee is an asset of the business so he has the option to TUPE, the key word being Option.

If you sell Cesc to Madrid, even though he doesnt want to go, you arent giving him an option.

Therefore Wenger can say, “well i want you out”, to which cesc says “either sell me to Barca or pay up my contract and i’ll go”.

  12. gambon

    Atom

You cant force a player to leave at all.

Hence why wenger had to say to Ade things like “we need the money” and “you may not get paid”.

He was gently puching Ade out of the door.

We still had to pay Ade & Kolo a pretty huge chunk to go.

  13. Queen of Suburbia

I told this story before but a friend of mine played for Derby County.

He suffered a lot of injuries and Phil Brown (the boss at the time) sent him to a local specialist who basically said his career was over. And Brown had papers drawn up to terminate his contract, retire him and pay him compensation. This wasn’t for the sum of the remainder of his contract even if that circumstance.

My friend was represented by his Dad and they didn’t believe the “local” doctor so they went home and got a second opinion who rubbished the original doctors prognosis saying he’d return to full fitness.

At that point Brown backed off. And my friend left Derby when his contract ran out and is still playing now.

  14. timao

there’s plenty of examples of players drawing huge wages for years but not playing, the clubs can’t sell them because no-one can equal their wage packets, and can’t play them because they don’t fit in the team. so they just have to keep on paying the wages. happened a lot at chelsea i seem to remember.

  15. timao

yes, zeus, it is a “slight” on Tunisian dentists everywhere! personally i think south africans are the best dentists. never had a tunisian – and i certainly won’t be getting oen now, jeez, not after william gallas refused one!

  16. Queen of Suburbia

gambon – have you any evidence for that…because it still doesn’t sound right to me?

I’ve heard players liken contracts to slavery…I always assumed that was due to the fact that they could be bought and sold effectively with very little say so.

  17. Arsenal Tom

gambon.. what you said is what i meant mate, you force them out without actually forcing them… just look at what benayoun said last weekend about benitez.

dont see how or why we would have paid either of those two to go though, they’d have been guaranteed more money and game time at man city… the two most important things

  18. herbert

    AT and gambon

That´s maybe also the reason Wenger has huge problems now if he really wants to replace Almunia, Denilson, Diaby, Vela et al and give their wages to some new signings

What works in our favour with Cesc´s long term contract viciuosly works against us with the players we might want to get rid of

  19. gambon

    herbert

Yes, id imagine the wages are a problem with the likes of Almunia.

Which will probably see us pay him to leave, to subsidise lower wages elsewhere.

  20. leon

its pretty clear at this point that wenger only in the market for 2 more player all defensive and its my guess he is looking for 2 very experienced players at cb position and keeper, any players linked to club under 26 in view will not be be comming,dj verm and new signing are all 23-24 which is good age but wenger will want at least 1-2 experienced defenders sole would have been ideal. and the fact he has backed edwardo thoe vela ect pretty much counts out any more attacking players comming in.

  21. Red Arse

    QoS,

Selling the shares of a business is not quite the same.

I am professionally qualified, but I am not a lawyer!

Long term contracts such as Cesc’s appears to be are supposed to stop this sort of nonsense but can be a two edged sword.

If gives both the club and the player certainty of employment/srevices rendered. Cesc is probably paid a premium to sign such a contract. Arsenal are not subject to a player running down the last year of their contract, until 4 years into the future.

Chamahk refused to ask for a transfer last year. Why? Because Arsenal would pay him a much larger salary when he eventually signed for him. The “loser” was his previous club, because he did not have a 5 year deal.

Alternatively, if he had asked for a transfer he would have forfeited his rights to have his contract paid up and for any loyalty payment that may have been in his contract and his future salary would not have been so large because Arsenal would have had to pay a fee to the selling club.

This is all a bit complicated and I am rapidly becoming bored with my attempt to explain. :-)

The point is, it would be naive to think that Cesc is sitting on the fence with splinters up his a*se because he is doing it for fun. We need to wake up and smell the coffee. It’s MONEY! :-(

  22. Pedro

Timao, I’m a fan of the Polish dentists.

Though mine is English and he is exceptional and most importantly, trustworthy.

  23. GoonerT1m

qos, sometimes its important to pull people up who waffle, not that you would of course, your one of the more sensible on here!, i was only joking as well!, much like the Arsh was as well no doubt!

  24. timao

you just have to hope that players would prefer to play, it’s usually the case, not a big problem i don’t think. most of the time when arsenal have wanted to sell there are plenty of buyers and players want to be playing. it’s more of an issue for smaller clubs getting stuck with an over the hill mega star – like when freddie went to west ham

  25. timao

someone else said it earlier and i thought the same thing… the arsenal photgrapher fancies nasri – it’s almost embarassing!

  26. Red Arse

    Pedro,

We all say that about our dentists, because if he found out we were being rude we would be terrified about what he could do.

Oops, sorry that should have been the lower back, not the front upper! Never mind you have 25 others! :-)

  27. Red Arse

    Dutchman,

In the few matches I have seen them play, I thought both Affelay and Hazard were pretty creative and not so much DM’s. I must be wrong, I suppose?

Arsenal vs Man utd at the emirates where we won 2-1 with a last minute header from Henry. To date that was the best ever game i seen at the emirates and as for the atmosphere it was electric. (like we won the league with a last minute header against the Mancs!)
    Ur Talkin shit m8.

hehe. That was the same thought I had when I saw this pic.

For the record neither Affelay or Hazard are defensive players in ANY sense.

Lionel Messi has admitted he would be ‘delighted’ if Cesc Fabregas joined Barcelona this summer.

The Arsenal captain has been heavily linked with a move to the Catalan giants, with the 23-year-old having been pictured in a Barca shirt during the Spanish national team’s celebrations after winning the World Cup.

Messi is now the latest in a list of Barcelona players to reveal their desire to see Fabregas move to Camp Nou, following pleas from Carles Puyol, Xavi, Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta to join the ranks.

Fabregas has not yet revealed whether he will leave the Gunners to rejoin the club where he started his career, but Messi confessed it would be a great move.

“I would be delighted if he came,” Messi said

“We played together as kids (in Barca’s youth team) and he knows the club.”

    Villa excitement
Messi also stated his excitement at the possibility of playing with David Villa, who left Valencia this summer to join the Spanish champions.

“He will be really good for us. He has already shown what he can do at Valencia and in the Spanish national team. Let’s hope we can be together soon to start preparing for the new season,” he said.

The 22-year-old also issued his desire to see Diego Maradona stay as coach of Argentina, who is under intense pressure to leave following their 4-0 exit to Germany in their World Cup quarter-final.

“It’s up to him to decide whether he stays or not,” Messi added. “For me, he should stay.”

  34. Queen of Suburbia

As I understand that Gambon – you are right in a way. Because ultimately the player can say…”I understand you’ve agreed a fee, but I like my house so i’m staying put and seeing out the rest of my contract”.

The buying club has to present an attractive enough option that the player is prepared to say, “you know what sod my house and my 3 years left on my contract, I’ll sign the new 5 year contract i’m being offered.”

So to bring it back to Fabregas, if Real Madrid offered us 50m and we accepted the bid. I don’t beleive we would have to pay Fabregas £25m of that.
I think Real would say to him…we’ll give you £5m to join us and a six year deal paying you £30k a week more than what you are on and he’d either say yes or no based on whether he liked the look of it or not.

He’ll probably turn around and ask Arsenal for the loyalty payment he’d be due at the end of his contract but not £25m to pay off the remainder otherwise Arsenal would just say forget it then.

Does anyone know what the tea lady at the nou camp thinks of the possibility of Barca signing Cesc, I would really like to know her thoughts too….

  39. Red Arse

    DG,

Our first game against the Chavs, Drogba will crunch Kos and we will have another (skinnier) Senderos.

    Just great!

sixx pacc – it’s not the first time, the pics of the players first day training was all Nasri as well… he/she has got it bad!

  41. Matt

‘Arsenal have just splashed out a reported £10 million on Laurent Koscielny, but the 24-year-old defender arrives at the Emirates a relative unknown.

So, just who is he? We asked the managing editor of our French website Cedric Roquette for the inside track on the man who will wear number six shirt for the Gunners next season.

“Koscielny has everything you expect from a defender – except a massive frame,” explained Roquette.’

    NO, SHIT!!!

  42. Wenger the liar

Fifa need to sort their chit out. In US sports if a chairman even comes close to mentioning players in other teams they get big fines.

I would suggest that mentioning players from other teams comes with a big fine in the first instance and for repeat offenders they get banned from transfer windows.

For players I would have the same applied and by big fines I mean between 4-12 weeks worth of pay.

    Mother fuckers.

Toure earns more than him now.

And im sure Ade said Wenger begged him to leave. Sort of like Arsenal were skint and they really needed the money so he had to go.

Sounds bollox. But then sounds like something Wenger would say

  44. gambon

    QoS

Yeah the 2 parties will always compromise.

I wasnt suggesting we would have to pay him £28m, but he certainly could hold out for that much if he wanted, as thats what we owe him according to the contract.

Anyway we should be talking about how we can keep him, not how we can flog him to the highest bidder.

  45. DeiseGooner

Na Red Arse, Kos will come at Drogba like a spider monkey and the Drog wont know what to do. Then Vermaelen will give him his dead eye stare and really freak the head off him. Its all good. :)

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has distanced himself from reports linking Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas with a switch to the Catalan giants.

The La Liga champions have been widely tipped to take the Spain international back to the Camp Nou, but after being quizzed by journalists, the coach brushed off the news.

He said: “It’s not my business, it’s not my job. I’m sorry.

“He’s a player for Arsenal, so Arsene Wenger has the say. You have to ask them.

“You know him better than me (the media), you see him each weekend, he’s a good player, that’s why he is here with the Spanish team and not on his holidays.

    Diakhate (8m)

    Almunia
    Silvestre
    Senderos
    Gallas
    Merida
Cesc (50/50 but will not be replaced)
    Simpson
Vela on loan or Eduardo sold, maybe both.

Vermaelen was too small – but he leaps like a salmon in heat

Now Kos is too skinny – i bet he leaves his hair grow and becomes samson like in his strength :)

QoS, weight doesn’t fuss me really… Lucio is a light weight but a beast all the same.

Senderos is pretty big and he’s a bit of a fairy on the ball.

  55. timao

David – i don’t really believe what Adebayor says, he twists the truth in his own mind. wenger begged him to leave…? i’m not sure about that, he probably just refused to give him another pay rise. adebayor twisted that round to mean arsenal are skint. fuck it – everyone including the entire state if abu dahbi would be skint if they had to pay adebayor what HE thinks he’s worth

  56. David

    Cesc shouldnt be on holiday.

He barely played 80m the whole world cup.

    Just like Joe Cole.

WTF does Cole need a holiday for?

  57. Matt

    QOS

It’s not like he is 6 foot 4 with that sort of frame, where he would at least have a height advantage. He is 6’1 so will maybe have a sleight height advantage on some, but I cant see him having a weight advantage on many. He either needs to be extremely quick or be able to read the game exceptionally well. Like someone else said, can you imagine him up against Drogba, or even Kevin Phillips for that matter!

  58. Maqitlarge

    yesterday Iniesa
    today Messi
    tomorrow some other cunt.

whatever. its doesn’t actually matter does it?! Its just noise, a distraction. Pathetic and they don’t even realise it.

    timao

Ade might be a retard…but surely Wenger mustve lied to him much the way he’s been lying to us the fans that we’ve been skint?

  60. RT.Z

I have heard from a very reliable source that Joe Cole has signed a four year deal worth £90,000 a week with Liverpool. He will wear the number 15 shirt for the reds.

    Herbert -

I swear I am so entrentched in Doom that I now never expect anything from Arsene in the transfer market. By not having any expectations I do not feel let down when the sky sports countdown clock hits zero and we have united rejects in the ranks.

    However.

This fucking Cesc transfer bollocks has sucked me in and I am in two states currently, on the one hand I actually believe that Arsenal have handled the bid etc in the best possible way and that Cesc will play for us next year. On the other hand I think that our lack of ambition is one of the major reasons he wants to leave and that he is also a cunt from how he has handled the whole situation.

The nightmare is that we were planning on selling him all along and its a case of waiting for the last possible moment to reduce the comeback from the fans. If you look at the way its played out the longer you let this fester the more the fans will think good ridence and the board management will be absolved of blame. Also with fuck all time to find a replacement we can talk of internal solutions.

Anyway its starting to fuck me off, as you can tell.

  62. Matt

QOS, I really do hope not.

Arsenal won nothing for 5 years while building a young team with Cesc, Clichy etc

Xavi staid at Barcelona and they started winning

We have to say no to Cesc and we will start winning as well

  64. Wenger the liar

    Herbert –

Mate your preaching project youth to the wrong person, you can convince Gambon faster than youll convince me.

I do agree that if we are to be succesful anytime in the next decade that we need to keep Cesc.

Koscienly said it himself admitted that the physical side of the game is his weakness…but Wenger thinks otherwise.

“We identified Koscielny as a very, very strong centre-half,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

    Translation: He’s weak as shyte.

    David

Thank God Wenger didn´t say he is “intelligent”

Then we would know we are REALLY in trouble with the player

  67. Wenger the liar

Have we signed another player called rambo or are you people that have been posting here refering to the guy that currently has one leg, will no doubt suffer from constant muscle strains upon his return and will probably not go in for a tackle again for at least two years?

Who we talking about as our saviour?

  68. Chris Beef

“do you think we’ll have signed somebody the scouts and manager don’t think can handle themselves?” Err most of his recent signings have been lightweight players!

Chamakh looks more muscular than Kos

A tourist is in North London one Saturday and he decides he would very much like to go to a football match, so he asks a man in the street if there are any local matches being played that afternoon.

“Well,” replies the man, “the Arsenal ground is very close but they’re playing away today. If you feel you really must see a match, the Tottenham ground is not that far away. You go straight down this road and you’ll see two queues, a big queue and a small queue.

You should go to the small queue because the big one is for the fish and chip shop.

  71. Matt

Call me pessimistic QOS, but I am going to be the opposite. I am going to worry until I have seen him play a few games. At which point hopefully he will prove me wrong!

  72. MickyDidIt89

Herbert, I reckon Chamakh may well become undroppable, so that does leave only that option for RVP.

  73. RT.Z

A young boy goes to Social Services and tells them he has no where to live. ‘What about your parents?’ replies The Social Worker ‘No, they beat me’ says the boy. ‘What about your Grandparents?’ replies the social worker. ‘No, they beat me even harder!’ says the boy. ‘Well where do you want to stay then?’ replies the Social Worker “Tottenham” says the boy “They don’t beat anyone”

  74. David

Vermy had this to say about Koss

Will defenders become more technical?” mulled Vermaelen. “Well that depends on how you play – you’ll always have defenders who are and others who aren’t. If a boss wants a player who just defends, he chooses someone who is big and strong, and not good with his feet. It’s his choice.”

    —————————

Why the fuk are we looking at a “technical” defender?

  75. herbert

    mickydidit89

I actually think RVP is better off a little bit on the right

And Chamakh scores more than half of his goals with the head!!!

  76. MickyDidIt89

    Herbert 16:56 Agree.
RVP has always been ideally suited to the DB10 role in a 4-4-2, so this is the best option for him the way we set up now.

  77. RT.Z

Arsene Wenger showed how relaxed he is by commenting to journalists that if the Catalan giants don’t give up their Cesc chase, he will mount a bid for Barca’s global superstar, Lionel Messi.

Messi has a €150 million (£130m) buy-out clause in his Barca contract.

“I have made a £40 million bid for Messi and nobody speaks about it,” quipped Wenger.

  78. David

    Herbert

    100000000000000000000000000% with you there friend.

We would be stupid not to play Chamakh centrally.

  79. herbert

    gambon

    with all due respect

apply for a manager´s job in the premier league, i would be proud to have exchanged messages with you one day in the comments section of Le Grove

But don´t always dismiss other people´s opinion as if they knew nothing

  80. Queen of Suburbia

David – do you think Sol actually played that well for us?

I’ve been thinking about this a bit, i reckon he was not really any better than OK. His attitude however was brilliant.

It just seems a bit like we were wowed by all the fist pumping and flag waving rather than the performances.

  81. MickyDidIt89

We are short on full backs than can actually cross the ball. I have been amazed that during all the speculation that there have not been more calls for reinforcements in that area.
