World Cup 2010 review / African linked + transfer run down…

by & filed under Uncategorized.

… and we’re off!

World Cup 2010 is well and truly under way and as a soccer ball fan, it’s your duty to immerse yourself in every game and become the global Arsenal scout you always dreamed of becoming.

The first game was between Mexico and South Africa. I was pretty disgusted that R.Kelly was chosen to sing during the opening ceremony. The guy makes John Terry look like a Blue Peter presenter, an odd decision. As for the event, well, after seeing Beijing’s Olympic opener, I don’t think any opener is ever going to quite be same…

The game started off with a bang, Mexico battering a South African team I knew very little about. Dos Santos missed some great chances and Carlos Vela had a perfectly offside goal disallowed. In my mind, I’d already discounted it… you know the rules Carlos, if it’s not a chip, we give it to Eboue. Shockingly, the home nation took the lead after a cracking solo effort from a superbly named player called Tshabalala (Shabba-la-la). He buried a through ball into the top corner and took his celebration into the corner where a few of his team mates had put together a little dance. Again, I don’t want to p*ss on anybodies chips here… but making up dance routines with your mates is kind of what girls do…

Sadly for South Africa, some shocking marking allowed Marquez in at the back post where his shanked shot luckily slipped past the keeper. The crowd were gutted, but on reflection, a point was a superb result.

The really exciting game of the evening was France versus Uruguay. A formal complaint to the BBC was in the offing as I couldn’t understand a word one of the guest panelists was saying. I can’t believe a portion of my tax went towards the fee of a player I hate so much.

Diaby, Gallas and Sagna started. I was very interested to see how Diaby would fit into the French system and I was also keeping a keen eye out for sulky French sensation Gourcuff. Well, the game was very much end to end. Both teams had clearly been instructed to take full advantage of the global keeping bitch fest about the new football. Lloris was once a proposed target from Le Grove. I did retract my suggestion after seeing his weakness dealing with crosses. He was showed up almost instantly last night fumbling a high ball in the box. Bar a few tidy saves you’d expect him to make, he looked pretty shaky at the back.

Sagna delivered his usual steady performance at right back. He’s a great defender and even his crossing was ok last night. Diaby had a very good game for France. I was struggling to pick out the French formation, but I think it’s safe to say that Diaby was playing the anchor role and switching it up with Toulalon (nasty bast*rd). Our boy controlled the middle of the park superbly, his passing was not only crisp for most of the game, it was forward thinking and creative. He was very good for Les Bleus last night which is doesn’t surprise me. He’s been rested for a few weeks, the French probably don’t over train and he’ll be eager to impress a nation of fans who are brutal on their players.

Gourcuff didn’t have his best game but you can see that he is a fantastic player. He took on a freekick from an impossible angle in RVP fashion and he certainly wasn’t shy going for goal. I don’t think the system suited his game last night but I’m sure we’ll see better from him as the tournament progresses.

Today sees the first England game of the tournament. Traditionally a day where as fans we can all head down the pub, become overly rowdy and possibly get into a fight with one another if the result doesn’t go our way. I’m sure the Americans will be up for this one as well after their politicians decided to put the BP Oil disaster solely on the British. I’m looking forward to the game but I know it’s going to be a nervy opener that could potentially end up in a draw.

The other games are Nigeria versus Argentina which will be a spectacle purely because Maradona is expected to showcase the first 3-3-5 formation. Plus Greece versus South Korea, which I couldn’t be less interested in.

In transfer news, the Daily Mail believes the signing of Joe Cole signals the end of Eduardo’s career. Not quite sure how they’ve correlated the two. We’ve also been linked with Phil Jagielka which is interesting. We’ve been warned off that French bloke whose name begins with a ‘K’ and bar that, there’s nothing new to report on. Actually there is, Wenger likes a winger from Tanzania who plays like Theo… steer clear. He also likes Everton’s Pienaar.

If you’re interested to read how the bloggers see the world cup going, Ollie over at Pies has put together a list here.

Right, I’ll be back tomorrow with more World Cup news! Make sure you drop your thoughts about the players in the comments section, it’s a friendly place to talk football, football and football!

See you there!

No im watching on rte Reggie..

Absolute sitter there by Altidore and Lennon is shite. Even Theo would have done better there.

  2. Stu

Makes very little sense to play Milner left midfield when he has played CM for Villa most of the season. Should really have started JC there..or even have brought Johnson.

  3. Gooby

i am listing to wenger on TV and he has a great knwolege of every player on the pitch regarding weakness and strength it is quite impressiv especially talking about relative unknown in the US squad lol

  4. Stu

That was just pathetic..when are england going to get a reliable keeper ffs. I may not like england but its just awful seeing that happen so often.

  5. tonyadamsisgod

I seriously have lost count of the amount of times I have said that Joe Hart is the only keeper who doesn’t have a waiting disaster in him!!!!

  6. A

taig joe hart had a mini-disaster against platinum stars!

gooby swp is intelligent, lennon obviously isn’t, but swp can actually see, and play a pass, as he did to put cole in behind just after coming on, great ball that was

we HAVE to win this game otherwise green is in the shit massively!

  7. alex

From optajoe: “Rob Green made more errors leading to goals than any other player in the Premier League last season. Calamity.”

  8. RayGooner

It takes good “Mental strength” to come back from that one (Robert)….and we know Wenger likes that…

  9. reggie 57

Yeah i am watching on hd but adrian gillies whatever he’s name is has just apoligised so its alright..

  10. zeus

Which commentators are you guys getting. I’ve got Dave Woods for Argentina and now the extremely good John Helm for the England game.

Very refreshing not having to hear ‘ take a bow son’ from people like Auntie Gray.

  11. Stu

Another sub? Carra on for King. This WC is falling apart in front of your eyes. 2 CBs injured, no solid GK and no left midfielder.

  12. Stu

I would rather have a foreigner doing the commentating Zeus. Not because i would understand them better but because they celebrate the goals as if they scored it themself, rather than “oh, its a goal. They lead 1-0″. Wheres the fucking excitement ffs!

  13. RayGooner

After the goal it was very NICE to see that none of the english players went down to Green to give him some support…
They all just turned their backs on him and couldn’t care less about him…
    That’s the Team Spirit lads…

  14. RayGooner

If Jamie Carragher has to face Altidore one more time, he’s gonna get bocked again and sent off…

  15. gazzap

this is old england. This is exactly what we were like 4 years ago – we may as well still have Sven in charge. doesn’t matter how well Gerrard and Lampard play – they are NOT a good centre midfield pair. I dont know how many more examples managers need of that. Have we ever won a game with them in the middle?!
Heskey might win a lot in the air but what does he do with it? Bag of shite.

Crouch meanwhile cant get a start even though he scores 3 goals every time he plays for England – and Capello plays for the first time in this job, without a holding midfielder. what a knob.

As for Knob Green. I cant believe wenger is looking at him. He is worse than Almunia. Bullshit as usual.

  16. gazzap

My West Ham friends dont rate Rob Green in the same way as we dont rate Almunia. You always look at your own players more critically. But Green has thrown away more points for WH than Almunia has for us, as hard as that is to believe.

  17. ethangunner

wow England and Arsenal play pretty similar !

Shit goal keepers , ineffective strikers , with superior attempts on goal .. and possession ,yet fail to gain any advantage by it …

    choice !

Hart has the number 1 spot in his sights now ..
if not for green it would have been 3 points !

  18. Arse&Nose

leave Green alone, he is the only decent human being in the England squad. He raises tons of money for charity and is humble. He is not to blame for the draw today.

The media is to blame for hyping England up, for making us believe they had a chance. Truth is England are rubbish and most of England’s players cannot perform without a lenient premiership ref officiating.

  19. Mayank

Another fine display of football by England. I wonder why even a tough coach like Cappello bows to player power. Lampard should not have been in there and Crouch should’ve been. Theo could’ve done better than Lennon.

  20. ethangunner

    ————————————-
totally agree , maybe thats why wenger IS looking at green .. because wenger ‘couldnt’ choose a good keeper even if he fell on him !

  21. Stu

I wouldnt know about his charity work A&N but didnt he say last year or 2 years ago that he should be england number 1 or something. He isnt that humble imo.

  22. Mayank

Haha Ethan, Arsenal and England play nothing alike.
We’re way more confident on the ball and threaten much more. We take much less pot-shots on goal. And we have a better GK. And don’t compare Rooney to RvP, they’re very different players.

    ——————————-
of course he is ! i didnt see any other fucking player fumble the ball across the goal !? did you ?

who gives a fuck about raising money ..
go join the lions club !

    THIS IS FOOTBALL !
    AT THE TOP LEVEL !

it was FUCKING ! unforgivable !

he wont get another look in unless hart manages to fuck up even more prolifically than he .

  24. ethangunner

mayank as ever your missing the point !

i think i made them clear enough ..
if you cant see the similarities …

    LOOK AT THE SCORE :)

trying to hold a 1 goal lead ?!
i dont think there’s any point talking to a yank @ this moment !!!! :)

  25. ethangunner

    Mayank says:
    June 12, 2010 at 21:41

England had plenty of time to get another goal after their first one which was horrible defending.
    ——————-
    you just described ARSENAL !

  26. ethangunner

humble or not he ate a good deal of the pie today ..

after such a basic , basic error .. ill be very surprised to see him in the next match ..

  27. gazzap

Joe Hart is the best keeper we have out there, but Capello is afraid to play a young keeper. Chris Kirkland is our best older keeper but no one wants to pick him because he cant be trusted to give us a run of games with his injuries – and I think people think his time has passed. But kirkland rarely drops clangers.

  28. Mayank

Look at the score? Every team that draws 1-1 plays like us?

We crack under pressure while defending a lead. This was a GK error of a very different type than Al’s.

We score enough goals and are bad at defending. England can’t score and are pretty good at defending, or at least they were.

The only similarity is the luck with injuries.

And is calling me a yank supposed to offend me in some manner. You know I’m not American. I guess I just don’t get Thai humour :(

  29. Mayank

Ethan we scored more late winners than anyone in the league. What are you on about?

Maybe you’re frustrated in the same manner by the 2 teams you support but they play nothing alike…

  30. ethangunner

or the rest of the Series ..

anyway other than Dempsey /Donovan they were hopeless .
didnt really threaten all night ..

thanks green you spanker .. that little bit of BS lost me 200 quid !

  31. zeus

Some1 said England goes to the 1/4s b4 they flop, I fear a RO16 exit is on the cards this time round. At least you guys qualified for the tournie this time.

And again ROONEY IS NOT THE MESSIAH. He is a very naughty boy. Can’t wait to hear what Alan Davies and co. have to say about this on the bbc and armchair world cup blog.

    Funny as hell.

Loving the world cup. Each and every time Geoff makes a post its get him and him and him, now after actually taking the time to watch some of them, I suppose that list will shrink considerably.

Capello you mug, signing on for a two year extension was BIG mistake.

  32. gazzap

England will be trouble if Carragher is at CB all tournament he was roasted just about every time by average USA strikers. Brazil, Spain etc will just walk through him. I can see him getting sent off.

Mayank – I think ethan was winding you up. Note his exclamation marks and smiley.

  33. A

Yep gazzap, if king is out then we’re pretty buggered! Terry was pretty pants too….

I’d actually play Dawson, however embarrassing it is to say that!

we were pants today, terry and carragher were terrible, lampard and rooney non existant, lennon very poor

    HAHAHAHA

  36. Arse&Nose

    ethan fuck england.

The team are full of big egos, wide boys, wannabes, party boys , serial roasters. There isn’t a real pro in the squad!

They get what they deserve, they believe their own hype and think they are gods. Trouble is in England, in the premier league these lot are treated like gods and expect the same when they go abroad.

Why do you think there is no successful English player who plays abroad? Don’t tell me its because the premier league is the best! haha

  37. gazzap

I missed the England goal. I was watching ITV HD channel and they accidently went to adverts just seconds before the goal. But I knew we’d scored when the neighbours went mental.

The game came back on during the celebration but ITV f*cked up big time. I think the normal ITV channel was unaffected.
ITV have done this once before when I missed an extra time goal. But that was the main ITV channel and the press had a field day.

  38. Doublegooner

Robert Green has just made a statement saying its his dream to sign for The Arsenal & emulate his hero Richard Wright. He also went on to say he’ll be holidaying with Lucas Fabianski, earlier than expected, next week.

  39. zeus

Mixed re; cole. Was told the club had actually taken insurance out on him to cover the WC & the deal would be finalised after tournament.

Then I hear conflicting story that he could go to the spuds.

Either way a deal is not a deal until finalised so anything could happen.

  41. Mayank

lol Zeus. I just don’t think there’s any real competition this time around. If they avoid the big sides they can progress. But yes, they didn’t look like it.

    I’m off

  42. Rohan

I’m telling ye, England will make it to the round of 16 before they get raped by Serbia. Mark my words.

Engerland to win the WC Fat Bollocks the best player in the World.

I Detest the media in this Country and thats one of the reasons I can’t support this shower of shit.

I am still laughing now at the Keepers error.

What I really want to know is how that fat cunt BPITW Rooney wasn’t subbed. He had a long shot at goal and my TV nearly exploded when prick commmentator shrieked RRROOOOOONNNNNEEEEYYYYYY. I could tell from thousands of miles away that it was going way wide.

Fuck these no hoper cunts, as Aand N said earlier without the bent refs they are useless.

I must say though that Milner and Carragher should have been sent off for straight red fouls.

  46. el tel

Hansen had it right on MOTD Engerland way below standard where possession is concerned.

    Spot on Jocko.

  47. el tel

Who said Green was humble the idiot just blamed the ball.

Sadly for him no other keepers seemed to bothered by the ball.

  48. Arse&Nose

El Tel, lol thank god there is someone else out their who can see through the british medias horseshit.

This morning South Korea vs Greece I counted 18 mentions of MANCHESTER UNITED

This afternoon Argentina vs Nigeria I counted 12 mentions of MANCHESTER UNITED, johnathan pearce even called heinze a man utd player then backtracked!

The overly biased, over hyping, horseshit media in this country will have us all believe that Manchester united are the best in the world and that Rooney is WORLD CLASS! haa…take away his kicking and swearing and he is nothing, much like half of the pond-life that play for England.

  49. Gooner P

England are not good enough… They have never been good enough! the last time they had a good team was WC 1990 team!
Media get too excited and the public jump on the bandwagon! its the same story and ends in failure. England will be lucky to get passed the quarters.

  50. Arse&Nose

IMo the refs have been top class in the world cup so far.

If Arsenal had refs like these in their games it would cut out the advantage the physical ,cheating teams get when we go up north and get 20 fouls against us. At the WC its 2 fouls= yellow, and it has helped to keep every game flowing with fewer free kicks and nastiness.

huh el tel? Doesn’t sound like he blamed the ball to me – took full responsibility for it….

Green said: “It was a mistake. The important thing is not to let it affect you for however long is left in the game.

“The ball may well have moved. I don’t often miss the ball by that much.

“It may have moved quite a bit but I’m not looking to make an excuse for what happened and I hold my hand up and take responsibility.”

  53. Lou

So far the World Cup has been predictably horrible. But, even more horrible are the pundits wheeled out to hype the whole thing even further. Mick McCarthy’s inanities this afternoon were even more annoying than those bleedin’ trumpet things and Andy Townsend and Gareth Southgate are possibly the worse and dumbest ex-football commentators I have ever heard. To hear them you would have thought that England were completely and totally dominant against the US when it looked to me like the hoofed ball to Heskey was the main thrust of our attack. The next couple of weeks promises a mixture of vomit-inducing cliche after cliche from a whole line-up of ex-footballers anxious to dip their snouts into the WC money trough plus of course some hilarious and moronic spouting of nonsense and odd versions of foreign footballers names. Mick McCarthy calling Juan Veron John Evron was a promising start.

  54. hitman

England will get knocked out by first decent team they play.
Capello is just another cheating Ital. Nobbled the England’s slim chances by selecting such a weak squad.
Defoe, Lennon, Milner, Dawson, King & all 3 keepers have no champions league experience. They dont get regular games at the highest level.
Crouch, Heskey, Upson have very limited UCL experience and not recent either. Theo has more UCL experience two thirds of the England squad put together. Milner and Green got found out tonight.
SWP, Carragher & Carrick are badly off form. King was a crock waiting to happen. Warnock ?? WTF!
Lampard & Gerrard have never played well for England. That just leaves granny shagger, someone else’s bird shagger, and anyone but his wife shagger as our only decent players.
    GET LOST CAPELLO.

  55. A

hitman terry is far from a decent player. he was embarrassed by robbie findley today, as carragher was by altidore, imagine him up against anyone actually any good. Spain, argies, brazil would all humiliate us.

  56. Gooby

for me: Drogba, Torres, Villa, RvP, Milito are ahead of rooney and i am sure i forgot some

as for CR and messi if you put them upfront.

For the record. IMO there will be an upset and/or a real blow out/thrashing in the 1st round of the group stages. As yet there hasn’t been either, & we play tomorrow morning ;) God please don’t make our game the blow out :(

  59. gnarleygeorge9

So I guess Green is off the Gooner radar now for everyone ;) What a howler! Still its better to start slowly @ a WC & peak @ the right end than start big & falter later. England are still in this.

  60. ethangunner

of course ENGLAND DONT PLAY LIKE ARSENAL…
theres only 1 wenger ball … TWATS .

my point is last nights game followed the same Arsenal profile ..

get a 1 goal lead , try and hang on to it .think its enough . only to have to scramble in the 2nd half to put the game back on track .. and fail with non clinical finishing , too many draws for this team ..
instead of wins .. same as the gunners .

England also looked far better in the 2nd half like arsenal do .. there keeper is to blame , just like arsenals ..

and not enough fire power fronting the English Squad , just like Arsenal .. retained most of the possession and failed to do anything with it the whole 2nd half , again JUST LIKE ARSENAL !

they Dominated the midfield , yet still cant crack it , just like arsenal ..
Defense – Eratic – shall i say it again >?

    JUST LIKE ARSENAL

if you cant see the patterns ..
too fuckin bad for you ..

  61. ethangunner

if green can muff up like that at the top level GG , id rather he stay put !

i will say England and Arsenal do share some similarities ..

    POOR KEEPERS –
GREAT MIDFIELD – possibly relied on too much
POOR STRIKE FORCE – not clinical enough
    PATCHY DEFENSE . -leaks holes

  62. Rohan

England didn’t dominate midfield, ethan. That was their one big weakness, lack of a proper playmaker who dictates play. Soemone like Alonso or Xavi or even Cesc. A proper playmaker. Gerrard and Lampard aren’t like that…The only player England have close is Michael Carrick which really says a lot.

As for a patchy defense, England have one of the strongest defenses in the world and I don’t see too many teams going past them. ( If the first choice players are playing )

  63. ethangunner

JC was crap ! Rohan ! and Green ? are they not the defense ????

and you still never got 1 past us ..
if not for a clumsy goal keeper 1 – nil would have done .
stevie G slipped one past you colonials and it was all over ..
and in the 2nd half you even looked more at sea !

if not for donovan and dempsey the whole USA would be total CAC !

  64. Rohan

Michael Bradley had a stormer in the middle of the park as Onyewu at the back.
JC?? He didn’t even play yesterday.

  65. zeus

    Lou

Hahah Juan Evron. Arrgo Sacchi once said the punditry in England is dominated by ex-players, as if to say having been the horse, you can be the jockey.

These muppets don’t understand the game. I know that I don’t know much about footy, but wehn I know more than you and your’e some sort of ‘expert analyst’ there must be something wrong.

As for Rooney being the best hehe, all of you above have it nailed on. He may look good in the hustle and bustle of the PL, but when the pace of the game is slowed down and actual technique comes into play there are a plethora of strikers better than him.

From one of the lists above I would add Higuain (though he was quiet today) and even Fabiano.

If the English ever plan on winning anything they must change the referring in the PL and hope that a few Asrenal players, who have technique, like Wilshere and Aneke come through.

  66. David

The fact that Wenger was looking at Green should say it all.

Wenger thanks for Everything…but its time to fack off.

Walcott has never been as poor as lennon was today.

    Never.

  67. David

    Rohan

England more than Dominated in midfield. The 3 Lions had the ball 90 percent of the time anyways…they just are unfortunate to have Emile Heskey on 1-1 situations.

  68. ethangunner

there you go rohan, david and i concur !
in the 2nd half especially it was like watching Arsenal coming at a Bolton to get a result in typical 2nd half Arsenal fashion ..

and with the same luck as the Arsenal ..
when it counted , it didnt materialize ..

Heskey missed a sitter my son could have put in the back of the net !

to Usa’s credit howard is a far better keeper ..

  69. David

Heskey missed a free header…a sitter…and his general link up play was Wank.

Capello shouldve benched Rooney and played the short one from Tottnshite.

  70. David

And I dont neccesarily agree England play like Arsenal..

First off for that to happen theoretically…Capello wouldve had to have all his best players on the bench and start the likes Dawson et al ahead of his star players.

Secondly Capello would had to wait till it was almost too late to make a subsitution.

Cant really argue about the goal keeping clanger…we’ve seen our fair share at Arsenal this season. Big Al and Flapiwankski like to put the ball in their own net…

But to be fair to Green, He did put his head between his legs. That way you wont feel like punching him in the face much in the same way you would feel about Almunia.

Lastly, England scored too early. Arsenal on the other hand havent scored early in since the season before last.

    But there are similarities.

    Heskey = Bendtner

Lennon = Walcott on his worst day times 20

    Frank = Diaby

    Carraigher = Silveste

    Green = Take your pick.

  71. Goonerman

I am not going to be disappointed a second time (1st time was Arsenal I raised my hopes so much) in 3 months by thinking England will win. England are poor.

    ———————-
just last night it sort of was like a Arsenal failure reenactment :) you know the whole protect a 1 goal lead shut up shop .. mentality .

no we play nothing like them really .. however England’s midfield is the strongest of the 3 area’s ..

which is the same as our team , however we have 10x more creativity ..

which makes it more frustrating when you cant finish . England with rooney i half expect NOT to finish ..

capello should of played theo and rooney up front ..
it would be a gamble of live or die by the sword , but at least all out attack would make for more Arsenal like play ..

and less boring to watch ..
