You can’t relate Cesc to Scholes and Giggs. they have achieved everything they ever wanted to achieve in their career so they have far more reason to be loyal. I think it is a unfair to question Cesc’s loyalty. He has been fairly above board in saying his immediate future is with us, but one day he might play for his hometown team. Kind of fair enough. Apart from anything else, as the sole quality playmaker in a team, you are always going to be targeted by the oppo. Stop Cesc, stop Arsenal has much truth. You’re mixing up the 1st of January date BNSB…it means that the player has to be under 21 on the 1st of January in order to make the unlimited B list.
The list is actually submitted by 1st Feb which is logical really as thats when the transfer window shuts.
Following your interpretation, clubs wouldn’t be able to sign players aged under 21 in the January Transfer Window as the submission window would have already been closed. This would be restraint of trade and contravene about 12bn European directives.

My worry is more to do with the quality of our replacements than with our first choice group (other than at goalkeeper).
For example if Cesc is injured, i think we can cope provided we’ve got Song, AA, RVP and Gallas available, Nasri can fill there.
But when Nasri has to fill in and ALL those other players are injured we struggle.
We need better depth in the spine of our squad.
A CF. A creative Midfield Player. A centre back. and of course at least one goal keeper.
While Geoff was away, Pedro made the suggestion that “project youth” hasn’t really come to bear yet because the true young guns are those who are coming into the reserves now. What’s the point in selling these loanees now? They came from our academy, they don’t cost us anything on loan. We put these players on long contracts before we send them out on progressively more difficult loan spells so we can watch their development and sell or promote. This makes us money and new talent. Your problem with that?

Im a 2 DM fan definately, but if youre gonna play 2 DMs then they both need to be able to hold their own going forward.
Song wouldnt work too well in a 2 DM system.
ATom – I’d like him here but as an option. I’d expect to see him play 50% of the season maybe and be rotated well with another DM. I don’t think he can go the whole season at the top of his game and more importantly at the top of Arsenal’s game.
This season We began creating opportunity and scoreing goals. Then we were creating some opportunities and not scoring many, of late at the end of the season neither.
I’m loosing faith in Nasri at a rate that is faster than a bullet train from Tokyo to Hashinobe
gambon – An Alonso type player who starts from deep would work well. You would almost have the perfect balance then. Cesc driving forwards in support, Alsono controlling the middle ground and Song doing the majority of the defensive duties. I’m not suggesting we buy Alonso although we definitely should have done last season!!

Nasri cannot distribute balls well, so suffers when Fab is not playing.
Nasri plays better when a player can force his way behind defenders and position himself – either Arshavin or even Eduardo when he had that burst of speed.
He may not be a play maker for us all on his own.

Afternoon all, I have now read all the comments and removed two for having a go at Tony, as for the long list of youth players, my point is no many of them are that good.
Gilbert, Hoyte and Randall for instance, been around for ever and loaned out all the time, why? If he doesn’t realise they aren’t good enough, why keep them, I could go on as there are a lot more.

From next season you will only be able to have 25 players in your squad Leon. 8 of which have to be homegrown.
You can have unlimited number of under 21′s though.
Theorectically everyone will have the same sized squad.
The 25 man squad rule will fuck our senior squad right up. This is why the cuts have to come at senior level and not reserve. In fact a lot of folk on here are gonna get their way on some well documented players. I’ll admit when I look at Denilson I see a big arrow above his head with 8-12m written in lights but I also honestly think if we wait a year or so those lights would say 15-20m.
But Geoff we can’t send Theo out on loan now, it would kill his mentality. He either stays or goes… 1 here for stays!

I don’t think the AW situation is quite as bad as you’re making out.
He’s come out and said he’s going to spend, we’ve progressed in the league from last year… and we’ve developed a good base.
If Wenger is going to spend properly, next year could be good.
We’ve already got a striker… Silvestre and Gallas will be off… which means we’ll have to sign a defender.
A couple of other additions could really make us contenders.

For us to have a chance of winning the league we would need a center half of immense quality that can basically teach them all how to defend in a line and as a unit.
We would need a goalie, we are never winning anything with Alumnia in goal – fact and we would need Van persie to stay fit all season because without him we struggle for goals.
Without these things it’s more of the same.
We won’t beat Utd or Chelsea – we are too easy to play against and not strong enough defensivley.
Benzema looks like he has everything to be top class in the prem, but to put him in our team in 4-3-3 you have to move Robin – Wenger won’t do that or pay him £140K a week which is what he is on at Real.

Pedro: Its very hard to remain optimistic when AW comes out with the “one or two” signings type of comment. Now I know he is going to keep his cards close to his chest, but it is his persisting with inadequate players, playing out of position, that makes people lack optimism.
We really do need four very high quality signings to catch up with the likes of Utd and the Chavs, who will not be quiet in the transfer window themselves.
It is “possible”, but it is easy to see where the pessimism comes from.

Under Wenger we have become defensively poor as every season goes by. Is this due to the young players we have or is it how Wenger drills them in training?
I honestly feel that Wenger should focus on the defensive side for nxt season. Even if we get gr8 CB’s and DM’s they’l be crap if we as a team cannot play well defensively. All the gr8 teams (Chelsea, ManU, Barca & Inter Milan) are good defensively as well attacking.
This is what Wenger needs to sort out himself. He’s got nxt season to do that. If he cant he needs to be honest with himself, the club & the fans and call it a day and let someone else come in with a fresh approach
Being the eternally hopeful person I am, I hope that AW is trying his Jedi mind tricks with the press and will be ruthless in his buying.
I think the Smalling from Fulham deal was a prime example of what can happen when things get leaked.
It makes sense not to go out to the market flashing the cash as clubs will bump up the price – however its pretty obvious that he isnt going to get a bargain either way as he is still coming from Arsenal and any sensible chairman will know damn well we are a Top 10 World Club and thus, have cash! Plus our finances are available to review online at a click.

One day Arsenal will sign Huntelaar, he is exactly what Arsenal want and his circumstanses are similar to Bergkamp / Henry as in not happy on the continent. Throw Benzema/ Yaya Toure into that as well.
This is what Wenger does, so why is he reluctant to do now. It will cost a bit more that Viera or even Henry but thats inflation. Look at Bayern Munich with Robben and Inter with Schinder sometimes its the club or the lack of pressure that brings the best out.

What I would love is the FA to encourage the premier league clubs to embrace and appreciate the technical side of football. However i dnt know how the hell that is going to happen but if u watch England play…they have v.few players who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and in tight spaces. The FA need to find a solution to this imo. Milner is a player who imo is good at that, from the new generation.

I quite like the MLB version of a salary cap. Essentailly you can spend over the limit on salaries but you have to contribute the excess again into a pot that is shared amoungst the other teams…
So for example if the cap is £1 and the Yankees spend £1.50 than they have to spend an extra £50p on top of that into the pot.
Sort of like a luxury tax.

Henry14, I too read that article that mentioned that, while most managers concentrate on improving players’ weaknesses, AW concentrates mainly on making players’ strengths even better. I can actually see arguments for both approaches. If a player has a great left foot, it’s a good idea to make it world class, beyond great. I just wish AW would arrive at a happy medium between both approaches.
Re AW’s in the transfer market this summer: the market is always tricky in a world cup summer, for everyone, esp. the big clubs. Many clubs will wait until AFTER the world cup to sell any of their players who are in the wc. They wait until after the tournament to see if the player did well there so they can raise their price. Of course it also risks hurting the price as the player might return from the tournament injured.
Whatever the case, if AW has targeted any players in the wc, it might be very difficult to get them before the tournament. Obviously this doesn’t apply to players not going to S. Africa.
I’ll be interested to watch the transfer market in general before and after the wc to see just how active it is.
Re this new 25-player squad rule: it falsely assumes a level playing field between clubs.
Clubs in the CL and the Europa cup (whose players also happen to be more likely to be in int’l competitions than lower table clubs) have far more games to play than clubs below the top 8. Given the level of injury in this league, a squad with such limitations gives a manager little room, as AW says.
I think anything we spend over say £6m is going to be an improvement on what we’ve got. I don’t think we need a £20m keeper.

QoS, I’ve always thought Europe should adopt the US’ salary cap. The darwinian system in Europe is hurting the game. I also share your doubt about City selling us Hart or any of their players – not unless it’s for a ridiculous price that may be way beyond the player’s worth. I can only see paying big money for Hart and Tevez.
Also, I have to echo whoever said we can’t expect a fully fit squad in August. The wc is going to be a major factor for us, it always is. AW’s teams do not historically do well after a major summer tournament – not in Monaco either. Altho we did win the 2003 FA cup after the 2002 wc.
Re: the 25 rule Lauren, I think Wenger is being unneccesarily pessamistic to be honest. He can supplement the 25 with under 21 players.
He just needs to ensure that those under 21 are good enough to step in if required.

He’s always going on about what a great bunch of kids he has but he regularly plays his first team players into the ground so that by the end of the season they’re exhausted and injured. So many times, in the last 10 mins or so of games, he could take off Cesc, e.g., and rest him. But he won’t do it. He has less faith in his young squad players than he claims to. It’s very frustrating. He did the same thing with Henry, overplaying him when he clearly needed to be rested – and missing opportunities when he could be rested.
I think the stadium repayments have been sorted.. Its only an annual repayment now.

I think the centre backs are a must for signings. Letting go of Senderos, Silvestre and possibly Gallas and Campbell (keep him though) and bring in an injection of youth and speed in there ala the Vermaelen signing would be great, bringing in one or 2 of Sahko, Zapata, Tasci, Subotic or Kjaar. BUT I think just has important is another midfield signing preferably a defensive one cause lets be honest the only ball winning midfielder we have is song and sometimes playing the 4-1-4-1 formation leaves us being caught on the counter attack, bring in a Toulalan or a Mamadou Diarra and stick to a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-1-3 and we’re sorted.

The thing is though Stu looking back on this season you could argue that all that was missing was a striker for when Van Persie and then Bendtner and Eduardo got injured (thats Chamakh) and in my opinion was another ball winning defensive midfielder cause alot of us here would admit that Gallas and Vermaelen together was a very good partnership and I think that if you had another defensive midfielder covering with Song, when Clichy and Sagna bomb forward you’d have Gallas and Vermaelen and Song and another ball winner covering thats 4 and that’d be enough in my opinion.
I think with the 8 Home grown in your squad of 25 rule, we need to be more thoughtful as to whose in & whose out. It really becomes a balancing act. Sure we have lots of kids that qualify but Wenger will want to use those as ‘freebie’ additionals to a 25 man squad. It’s not as simple as saying Clichy for Bojan, you lose a HG player, meaning you have to name an U-21 in the original squad.

Just dont think Bojan has lived up to the hype, although he is very young. I also think its a non starter, like most of the rumours out there.
I think there are good keepers out there, Frey, Lloris & Neuer spring to mind, personally Frey would be my choice.
CB is very tough, there just arent any good ones about, and we likely need 2. A back up is a bit easier as that can be someone either young like Kjaer, Sakho or someone at the end of their career like Metzelder.
As for a Gallas replacement i’ve no idea, i would just give Gallas what he wants.

We were linked with Lazios keeper, Fernando Muslera. Ive been watching Serie A out of boredom and the fact that our season is essentially over, Muslera is a star in the making. He scored half as many goals, had a shit attitude and left at the end of the season for the same amount we were offered for him before we trebled his salary.
Net result, it cost us a shedload for zip. Great management. And we still haven’t spent the money we got for him.
