Losing at Wigan was a good thing

by & filed under Uncategorized.

This isn’t going to be a long post this morning. I don’t think there’s much I can flag that I haven’t already over the past few weeks.

Yesterday was a prime example of why Arsenal must invest this summer and must invest heavily. Losing to Wigan when there is still a chance of Premier League glory is beyond disappointing. Where is the pride?

I can’t be dealing with the excuse makers today. The wheels of project youth well and truly came rolling off yesterday. All you needed to do was look at Wenger’s face to see that. That’s the first time we’ve lost from a two goal lead since Villa in 98′. It doesn’t get much more embarrassing.

However, you can take positives from yesterday.

I think most are fully accepting that this isn’t a Championship winning side. They’ve failed all the big tests this season and proved that even with most of our big boys back in the team, we still wouldn’t be capable of turning over our nearest rivals. I don’t think Arsene was prepared to admit that though. I still didn’t get the feeling he was going to invest in the summer.

Usually at this time of year the kids start playing for the first team, we all get excited about how good they are, then we accept a lack of signings in the summer based on break throughs. Well, this season he can’t pull that trick because our 3rd place is now in serious jeopardy. If we’re going to finish third, for the good of the club, I think we need to stumble across the finishing line, rather than finish a mile ahead of the pack.

I think it’s great that Flapianski dropped a clanger. I’m pretty sure he’s not good enough to be our number one next season. If he’d played a blinder yesterday, there was every chance Wenger would have kept the faith until next year, then we’d be in a whole world of trouble come Christmas. There is no way after yesterday Wenger can justify that risk now.

Silvestre is not worth a new deal, he proved that again with a dismal performance. Sol Campbell is worth a new deal. Finally, our defence needs serious investment if we ever want to win the league.

If we bumble our way to third by a few points this summer… City, Spurs and Liverpool invest spend millions, we’ll be behind them this time next year. Wenger now has money, he has to prevent that happening. Project youth was a good idea at the start, but kids can’t learn from kids and the entitlement the youngsters feel doesn’t give them a winning attitude.

This season is now starting to look like a worse season than last year. We finished impressively last year with a great streak in the league. Right now, we’ve lost 8 games compared to last seasons six. Last year we reached the champions league semi final and the FA Cup semi final. This year, we didn’t go as far in either. Where exactly would you say we’ve improved? A few extra points against the teams we drew against last  year? A Belgian defender we all love, who has failed to stem the flow of goals? And we’ve conceded more goals.

We need winners this summer and we need the manager to admit to not include kids in his squad that are incapable of playing next season. Trim the 60 man squad if you need to free up salary, get rid of the dross and give us 22 players who have the drive to justify wearing the red and white of Arsenal.

Yesterday was the worst day of our season so far, not because it was a freak result, but because attitude determined it.

Have a great day Grovers, catch up with you later.

Update: Shocking to learn that the only player who went over to clap the away fans was Theo. Bravo Theo, shame on the rest of the team… The away fans support has been tremendous all year, they didn’t deserve a shun after that performance. It takes 2 minutes to give the fans a clap. I hope Gazidis highlights that to the manager.

It makes very little sense to move on denilson and diaby neither is close to peaking.

Even though diaby frustrates me more than any other.

  2. Stu

Denilson, even at his peak, wont be good enough for the premiership because he isnt going to get any stronger or faster.

Diaby isnt going t get any smarter or any more defensive minded so neither of the two will eally be missed imo.

  3. Goonerman

Losing at Wigan was a good thing – I am sure you are right Pedro; he might have a clear out now. No more risks with players who are average.

  4. dennisdamenace

QoS – I was told that AW feels EXTREMELY let down by certain individuals, and has now decided that for whatever individual reason(s) those players on that list are not good enough!

Now we can argue the merits of this player and that player, but the info i got was that if a bid came in for any of those players, with the exception of those out of contract, it would be accepted….

Therefore, those on that list do not have a future at the club….

  5. Lou

QOS. I hear you, but for me that is one of the main reasons we are where we are. We play in the here and now. Players get older and gain experience. Diaby and Denilsen have plenty of experience but, to me, are not Arsenal quality despite playing for the club for years. I don’t know if they will ever be good enough and that’s one of the reasons why we have bottled the league-again. The blend is surely all wrong. Diaby plays one great game and we all think that he could be the answer. Then he has 2 ok games followed by 3 stinkers and then he’s injured. At his best I like him but we only see his best very occasionally. We need consistency and quality and we need it really, really soon.

  6. big dave

13 players wont leave that is too many, and the talent coming thru is not that good.

Ramsey is back in sept/early oct I hear.

Eastmond is not ready yet, sadly Denilson will stay along with Diaby.

The 2 keepers surely must go

  7. yeahyeahyeahs

I dont think vela will leave, remember we still have carling and FA cups, which it seems wenger loves playing him on those games

  8. leon

lou thats what happens when you dont have experienced players around you there is only risicky and maybe fab who in great position when had laest 5-6 experienced players around him. also i think aa has lost his motivation because he was expecting more top class players to brought in.i feel its a shame because of the season daiby has been realy good and is bad run form but they way i see it there so few top players in the team we are looking to 1-2 players to step so players like diaby nasri ect just cant efford to have bad game

  9. SharkeySure

    Very good post Pedro.

Nothing more to say really, yesterdays result was as bad as it can ever get.

I defend this team from what I perceive as unfair criticism and always try to remain positive and retain a bit of belief, so yesterdays result is like an absolute kick in the teeth for me.

People go mad cos we’ve lost to Barca and I think since when is that a valid reason to start slating your own team, and I call for a bit of balance and perspective.

Then we fucking well go and do this …..at fucking Wigan !!!! Wigan..?? WTF.

Arsene not replacing Coco in Jan is up there with dropping Arshy from last years FA Semi. He shoud hasve beenin for Sorensen the minute that Stoke forst made enquiries for James, let alone on the last day when they actually bought Begovic.

I was actually in Casualty at the local hospital for the duration, and the BBC update as I went to the ar was 2-2. I was fucking mortified. By thetime I get in the car were 3-2 down. Unbelievable.

Even now I’ve only seen the goals, but I just cannot understand how this could happen.

Even as a so called AKB I’ve said all along that Arsene doesn’t instil the right ‘win or die’ attitude into his players, cos he’ll pick players again and again even when he has the option to send them a real message.

I’m trying to remind myself that we were challenging for the title until mid April, to make this all not seem so bad. Its not working.

Merida gets a fucking run out. Why??!!

Flapianski and Coco. There’s a 9yr old keeper in my sons team that I have more faith in.

  10. limestonegunner

Who is going to take some of these underperforming and, in many cases, injury prone players on the kind of wages Arsenal has been paying on long term contracts?

Those in the last year of their contracts are understandable but what about Diaby, Denilson, Rosicky, Djourou , Fabianski, Almunia? I can see Vela being bought by a Spanish club.

I say keep Djourou (as 4th CB), Fabianski (out on loan), Denilson (out on loan), Almunia (as backup), and Diaby and Rosicky on the reserve bench.

It is more important that we add to the team, experienced quality rather than potential talent. Let competition for places be the order of the day.

Going back to a 4-4-2 next year and with a new defensive coach and GK coah, we need to add:

    –good goalkeeper
–top class striker (Chamakh is not enough, if he is already signed he can compete for 3rd with Bendtner)
    –2 CB plus resign Sol
    –DM cover

The problem with selling lots of players along with the end of contract departures of several more is leaving our injury-ridden squad thin. Obviously Wenger is trying to raise money to afford the transfer fees and wages of the new signings he needs to make.

But, again, these need to be real quality, experienced players without long injury records and mostly replacements for the end of contract departures.

  11. SharkeySure

If Vela’s going its not for footballing reasons I wouldnt have thought.

Diaby’s got to be a mistake. When he’s good he’s very very good. You don’t show the talent that he has without being a very good player.

Even before he started the spell of playing really well, you could see that he brought physicality to the team. Even on his poorer days his size is still an asset in such a small team.

  12. Chippy

I actually thought silvestre was having one of his better games till the last 10 minutes yesterday!

Ddm, I trust you, not that it would bother you in the slightest if I didn’t :) any early signs on incoming players i know you probably carnt name any even if you do know but if you do should we be getting in the slightest bit excited

  13. dennisdamenace

    Arindam@KOL Says:
    April 19, 2010 at 19:50

DDM , are u satisfied personally by the “INS” ?

Sorry mate, i’m being a bit dim i know, but INS ????

  14. dennisdamenace

Chippy mate, i gotta be honest and i say that i have my doubts, but my chum is definitely in the know, and i trust him because he’s not let me down in the past….

  15. Chippy

Why I’m asking questions ddm have you worked out how the fuck to get to the bottom of the comments without having to scroll thro the whole lot each time on your iPhone as I’m fucked if this tecnophobe can work it out!!!

  16. finestcuts

Fabianski has played his last game for Arsenal, so there’s no need to worry about him playing in the future.

DDM, the list you’ve come up with is one that most fans could have come up with themselves.

Wenger keeps his cards close to his chest, he would never compile a list which could be leaked on places like Le Grove.

But if you think it’s legit then no problem, you are entitled to believe.

  17. incesc

    cheers ddm

    great info there.

Cant see them all leaving as surely he would have to buy 13 players?

    :)

the 2 main surprises for me are diaby and eboue.

  18. SharkeySure

Chippy, my mobiles a Sony one, but I use the ‘find on page’ and search for ’20:’ or ’20:2′ etc to take me to a time of day. Simples

  19. Stu

The suprises for me are Ebowie, Denilson and Diaby. Its a shock that he would want them gone after all the bullshit he put up with over the years.

Obviously not all of them will go because its doubtful bids will come in for them all but if he really wants rid of them then hopefully it will work out.

  20. incesc

stu i think we will get decent money for diaby and denilson. they are both tidy players just not yop top class.

denilson and Vela i can see getting up to 12 million from spain,

    diaby 8 million maybe.

  21. finestcuts

Stu, if the club transfer list them, there will be bids for sure…..no doubt about it. Every season the FA publish a transfer list of players.

I just don’t see how such a private matter would be out in the open just 24hours after losing a match.

This is just a fan’s wish list, simples.

  22. nasridane

“We will announce the deals after the league [finishes],” he said.

“He is one of the players who has a good chance to join us.” (Chamakh)

Does this mean he has a few players already lined up??? I thought it was interesting.

  23. incesc

    finest

ddm has been spot on before

if you choose not to trust him fair enough but he has given info from his source before and its been trustworthy

  24. finestcuts

Nasridane, of course, Vermaelen was scouted for over a year, there’s a spiders web of scouts all over the world looking for players for us.

  25. Stu

Vela and Denilson will surely go to a spanish club. Diaby will probably go to france because for some reason they love him over there. Rosicky probably back to germany, maybe even Italy but far less likely.

Finest, it is odd and hard to belive that something like this would be “leaked” but at the same time i dont doubt that Wenger, for one reason or another, doesnt believe in these players anymore.

Hopefully with these players leaving he will get in a higher quality of players. Qualoty, not quantity.

Even if we sell 13 and buy 6 i will consider it equal provided the players coming in are better than not injury prone.

If we buy consistent players who dont miss chunks of the season the im sure the youths will be enough as back ups to keep us going.

  26. Chippy

Cheers sharkey but it dosent seem to want to work on mine, poxy technology give me a pen and paper any day ;)

  27. nasridane

haha yh… i dubt there will be major changes, also there is more of a chance of RVP leaving than diaby!!!

  28. craig

diaby is a great player, wenger will never get rid of him! some of his performance’s have been top class, i kno he goes missing in some games, but that will be corrected as he progresses!

  29. gambon

I cant see that there is already a list of players in the open, although I do think that list is pretty realistic bar Diaby, who will get another season.

I really think the best thing might be to strip the team down and start again. These players have let Wenger down over and over, he has probably given them a year longer than they deserve already.

  30. Stu

Some games craig? Surely you mean the important games. If he doesnt get acres of space and time on the ball then he is generally awful.

  31. finestcuts

I don’t know what DDM has been told incesc, if this list is correct then it’s spot on…….
What has DDM been right about before it’s hit the headlines?
Believe me, we can sell all of those players, it’s not a problem, there are teams all over Europe…..and the world.

  32. Stu

Finest, apparently DDMs source told him about Ade being told to fuck off, months before it was made official in the media.

  33. dennisdamenace

Chippy – As far as i’m aware you can’t ‘auto scroll’ to the bottom of the comment on an iPhone, fucking thing!

  34. nasridane

You guys really think Wenger spent so many years keeping and nurturing this squad together for him just dismantle it in one window??? Sure some will leave but that list seems ludacris… my guess is silvestre/gallas/eduardo/senderos/and at least one keeper!

  35. zeus

    OKay

IN – 2 GKs – Sorenson and Frey. (I would say keep the Clown as #2 but that would mean effectively giving away the FA Cup if we ever get to one of those finals again)

    – 2 CBs – I don’t know who really.

    – One powerhouse all around Mid that can defend as well as attack.
    – Chamakh and break the bank for Dzeko.

  36. craig

i kno what you mean, stu! the games he does go missing in are the big one’s, which is frustrating given the quality he has.

  37. zeus

    Nasri dane

Spot on. It would be too good to be true. Plus when the history writers covers the Wenger era the last thing Wenger wants is for those writers and documentors to say he effectively wasted 5 years.

    No chance in hell.

Sell both keepers, don’t resign 2 CBs and replace them, plus Chamakh. Thats the best we can hope for.

  38. gambon

“We have maybe not been investing because of the stadium but I think our financial situation is now becoming much stronger and we will be capable of buying the players we need to buy.”

Hopefully a sign of what’s in store this summer.

  39. AA23

Diaby is too inconsistent. he’s ok for a game and then useless for 3 in a row before getting injured for 3 months.
    out him.

  40. finestcuts

:) Stu…. we could have said that ever since he did those interviews claiming that Milan and Barca were on his case……

    But it’s a good talking point anyway………

All the players on that list should be replaced with better players.

Diaby is good but inconsistent. Denilson……….Geovanni mark 2……….
Silvestre………..Wenger’s biggest mistake in recent years, we should have got a top quality centre back who had a genuine chance of gtting on the first team.
Djourou…..I think he’s a good CB but we shouldn’t be paving the way for him with no competition. I doubt he will be sold. Only if we do a complete overhaul of defence minus our full backs.
Eboue will probably get a contract offer, who else can slot into right back. Would that mean we get another fullback, one that can play on either side?
Rosicky…..I think we’d keep him as a squad player but if we need to get someone better in then so be it…………….
so this really is a bit of a red herring…….
If all of those players leave then I’ll accept it’s a fact.

  41. nasridane

    Lloris
    sagna Unkown Verminator Clichy
    Song
    Cesc a world class cm
    RVP Chamakh Arshavin

I wouldnt say no! seems likely aswell

our bigest problem is our backup players, nasri is the qality u need comin off the bench not denilson/eduardo

  42. patthegooner

I didnt realise Metzleder was available on a free this summer.

Surely that is a no brainer. Lets have him

  43. SharkeySure

Diaby had a very good goame up at OT, barring his header.

My only doubt re DDMs list is the timing. If it had come out on Friday, I’d give it more weight.

Not dismissing it, but I just find the timing very very odd.

Denilson and Diaby BOTH being on it are also a little fishy. Havng said that Denilson out could mean Melo in.

Anyway, I for one just want this season over and done with, and until I see players in an Arsenal shirt, I’m gonna ignore all the hype.

Lets hope and pray that any announcements are made early

  44. patthegooner

Chamakh and Metzelder on a free

Di Maria or Ribery or Hazard for 15-20m

And whatever it costs to get in a top top keeper.

    Job done.

  45. patthegooner

He might not be Linford Christie but its not like we have been conceding this bucket load of goals due to a lack of pace.

Look at JT, he has not got a lot of pace but if your positional play is spot on and you have quality, you dont need to be that quick.

  46. Stu

Chamakh, Van Bommel on a free.
    Eduardo plus 10m for Lloris
    Krasic 12m
    Ciani 10m

I’ld saw for 30m or so thats a fucking brilliant summer.

  47. Stu

    *say

Zues, im not clicking on the link but i’ll assume its shit Gary Cahill they are suggesting.

We usually only concede goals from either counter attacks or from one of the defenders shitting himself and the rest follow suit.

All our defensive problems point to a lack of organisation throughout the team, not just the defence. The keepers being absolutely awful and determined to fuck up doesnt help either.

  48. zeus

    78692

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

If thats not funny I don’t know what is.

  49. Samir

    That does look nice Stu!

Chamakh, Van Bommel on a free.
    Eduardo plus 10m for Lloris
    Krasic 12m
    Ciani 10m

    That would be bloody amazing…

  50. big dave

Hazard is only 19 and 5ft 7, we don’t need another player like him, it will all be to similar, what we need is a strong midfield inforcer

  51. zeus

    eduardo plus 10 for Lloris?

First, no one is buying Eduardo from us unfortunately. Second, if someone does, it sure as hell won’t be for 10m. Dream on, he doesn’t even play anymore.

We bought him for 8 I believe and we will be lucky to get him for 4 at this point.

  52. zeus

    Big Dave

I get you. The needs of the team are obvious. But Hazard looks almost Messi-esque at times and not in the hyperbole way people say Nasri looks like Zidane either.

  53. patthegooner

I just dont get why the likes of Eduardo and Vela are not getting match time in the reserves. They are both low on confidence and lack match sharpness.

Why dont we use our reserves to give 1st team fringe players some much needed game time. its not as if we even bring them on in 1st team fixtures that much anyway. They didnt feature at the weekend and we had a reserve game tonight.

    It baffles me

  54. Stu

Lyon were rumoured to want Eduardo actually, so im not dreaming. They want him, we want their keeper. They know they cant hold ont Lloris forever and they might see this as a way of him leaving on their terms while getting a player that they want.

  55. gambon

I reckon Arsene will be able to spend £60m if he wants to.

He can do a hell of a lot with that kind of money, not to mention what he can raise.

  56. AA23

    Zeus
I read that Lyon are preparing an 8 mil bid for Eduardo and that man u are trying to get Lloris for 15 mil.
If thats true, which lets face it its not, then we should give them Eddie plus 10 mil for Lloris.
Mickey mouse maths at its finest.

  57. patthegooner

Arsene has also said that he does not expect Lloris to move this summer

A bit like he didn’t expect benzema to move last summer even though he was apparently interested in him.

  58. patthegooner

Thing is, would Lloris come to us or Man Ure given the choice?

I know Wenger has the French Factor, but Man Ure are winning things still.

  59. patthegooner

Apparently Barazite has had a stormer tonight against Pompey reserves.

I wonder if we will see him in 1st team action before the season is out.

  60. AA23

    Pat
I think Lloris will stay at Lyon to be honest, but its a fair question. Maybe the French connection could swing it for us maybe man u will outbid us or offer more wages.

  61. zeus

    ptg

I wouldn’t bet on it. For the past 3 pre-seasons now he has scored in our ‘curtain raiser’ but has never made the plane to go to Austria.

Don’t see that changing anytime soon either.

  62. AA23

I also read that we are seriously enquiring about Akinfeev.
    probably the usual bollocks though.
as long as we dont get Robert Green. He’s almost as shit as our current double act.

  63. patthegooner

AA23 it is a real shame

I think we would struggle to pinch an established player if we were in direct competition with either Chavski or Man Ure.

I think we are feeding off scraps,

  64. patthegooner

I hope it is not Akinfeev. I have not seen that much of him, but when I have, there seems to be a howler in his game….

Likewise Rob Green, I agree with that.

I would take the others linked though. Neuer, Lloris or Hart

  65. patthegooner

    Flappyhandski has really disspointed me.

I have always known that Clownmunia is shocking, but I hoped for more from the Pole. I feel his fellow countryman is already a better keeper.

  66. patthegooner

I think Wenger is in a bit of a quandary with the keeper situation.

He knows he has a potential world beater in Szczesny, but needs a fix now. Does he go mad and bring in a young lloris, Akinfeev, Hart or Neuer or does he look at the 30-35 age group for a experienced keeper to bring his prodigy though….tough call

  67. patthegooner

Mind you, who am I kidding.

I am in a dream world. I just know deep down that both Almunia and Fabianski will still be at Arsenal next season.

  68. Stu

I think he should go for a quality keeper regardless of age ptg.

If we do buy someone like Lloris, it will mean Chesney will have to up his game and fight for the number 1 jersey.

Its knowing that in a few years he would be guarenteed the spot that would make a player drop his performance levels.

  69. zeus

    PTG

Not tough at all. Good as Lloris is we need experience in this side. Its about time we stop looking at selling on value. FFS, the debt is almost gone isn’t it.

  70. ethangunner

vito is probably more capable back up . i wouldnt be surprised if wenger gave vito the rest of the season …

  71. patthegooner

And I hope he does put the Szczesny factor aside. Like you say, let them fight for the no 1 Jersey,

But I fear that Almunia will still be his number 1 next season.

But if not, then I would take any of Neuer, Hart, Lloris, and Frey.

Maybe given his age and experience, Frey is the best choice.

  72. A

Stu I don’t agree with that – it didn’t do Cesc any harm creating space in the team for him….

The only way someone like Szczesny will learn and become a top player is if he’s playing week in week out, if he’s number two he won’t ever develop. Though we could sign someone quality and just let Szczesny spend a couple of seasons on loan getting first team football.

Wilshere could still go on loan next season too, similar sort of thing

  73. zeus

    PTG

Youu must be kidding me. Not even wenger could spin that shit about the clown being #1 still.

    Gambon

Szczesny as #2 is madness. Thats how you kill a career, take a player with potential and throw him in at the deep end.

Mannone…pfffffft (though I might be being unfair to him).

  74. paul mc daid

the biggest disgrace here is that the whole world knows we need a keeper,a centre half,a midfielder, and a striker,we have needed them for four years, sorry, the whole world except, arsene wenger, phw, and ivan the great, believe me we will never win another trophy under this regime, these men are not winners, any success they had was mainly down to the foundations the club had built up over the years and the winning mentality off david dein.

  75. gambon

    six paac

He retired from intl football cos the madman domenech wouldnt pick him even though he was the best french keeper.

  76. zeus

Is the David Dein factor so important or is this just a case of the person who we don’t have gets elevated to demi god status.

As far as I know, Dein just signed who Wenger wanted him to sign and at the end of the day Wenger wants to sign no one it seems.

  77. CedarBayDave

Almunia is good enough to be our #2 (double entendre not intended)

If we can’t import one, do you think David James would be a good solution for a year?

  78. Stu

But Cesc came through surrounded by experienced players A. If someone had to do it now they they wouldnt have someone to learn from or experienced players to help them through it etc.

  79. patthegooner

    Cedar

Nope, dear god please not David James.

He might be better than the Clown but he is still a keeper in decline.

If we are getting a Keeper, lets get one that will make us points, not cost us points

  80. SUGA3

Al should be demoted to #2, Fabianski should be sold and we should buy an older head for a year or two before Szczesny is ready to step up…

  81. Gooby

Frey doesn’t play international because the french coach is a stupid mug that thinks mandanda is better just because frey made an error in a game with Ukraine. he is getting unfair treatment.

Yeah I agree with that Stu, which is why I wouldn’t advocate Szczesny being thrown in now, unless he really is deemed to be THAT good, but having him as back up to someone quality would really stifle his development.

Michael Ciani, big CB from Bordeaux.

Looks like a Sol, but has a very good touch as well. I would like to see him at Arsenal.

There is an ongoing joke on Arseblog, where he talks about Arsenal being linked with Frey for EVERY transfer window since he started his website.

the david dein factor is huge, arsene wenger answers to no one,he has no boss, not one other business in the world is run like this, their is only three people in the world that i know off that have no boss, the queen, the pope and arsene wenger.

I want an experienced no.1 but if we played Szczesny there I’d be fine with that, simply because he’s good enough.

I want Mannone between the sticks against Citeh.

I do have a feeling that Szczesny will be no.1 and Mannone no.2.

Why is it that Frey is meant to be leaving Fiorentina in the summer??

I really don’t want us to sign Cahill, we need someone better imo

  88. A

paul mc daid you reckon wenger has less of a boss than ferguson?!

finest I really don’t think so. Regardless of how bad Almunia and Fabianski have been this season I’d still pick them over Mannone every time.

  89. gambon

No one has said anything about Frey leaving, but i just think it makes a lot of sense.

He’s a good age, he’s at a club that tend to cash in on their better players, wenger will know all about him and he’s previously said he wants to join Arsenal.

he did well against fulham finest, terrible against west ham, and was very lucky in other games not to concede a number of howlers, just like the ones he’s conceded on a regular basis for the reserves ever since he arrived at the club!

Almunia and fabianski have not been good enough this season, but mannone is not even a premiership keeper, and worse than both of them comfortably imo.

gambon I swear I read somewhere that frey was definitely leaving fiorentina at the end of the season, which is why i thought it might be a genuine possibility, not sure i saw why he was meant to be leaving though!

We could sign Cahill but he would hardly ever get any games for us, only when Fabregas would be unavailable. In theory Arshavin can step into Fabregas’ shoes but it seems uncertain that Arshavin wants to stay with us.
