Losing at Wigan was a good thing

by & filed under Uncategorized.

This isn’t going to be a long post this morning. I don’t think there’s much I can flag that I haven’t already over the past few weeks.

Yesterday was a prime example of why Arsenal must invest this summer and must invest heavily. Losing to Wigan when there is still a chance of Premier League glory is beyond disappointing. Where is the pride?

I can’t be dealing with the excuse makers today. The wheels of project youth well and truly came rolling off yesterday. All you needed to do was look at Wenger’s face to see that. That’s the first time we’ve lost from a two goal lead since Villa in 98′. It doesn’t get much more embarrassing.

However, you can take positives from yesterday.

I think most are fully accepting that this isn’t a Championship winning side. They’ve failed all the big tests this season and proved that even with most of our big boys back in the team, we still wouldn’t be capable of turning over our nearest rivals. I don’t think Arsene was prepared to admit that though. I still didn’t get the feeling he was going to invest in the summer.

Usually at this time of year the kids start playing for the first team, we all get excited about how good they are, then we accept a lack of signings in the summer based on break throughs. Well, this season he can’t pull that trick because our 3rd place is now in serious jeopardy. If we’re going to finish third, for the good of the club, I think we need to stumble across the finishing line, rather than finish a mile ahead of the pack.

I think it’s great that Flapianski dropped a clanger. I’m pretty sure he’s not good enough to be our number one next season. If he’d played a blinder yesterday, there was every chance Wenger would have kept the faith until next year, then we’d be in a whole world of trouble come Christmas. There is no way after yesterday Wenger can justify that risk now.

Silvestre is not worth a new deal, he proved that again with a dismal performance. Sol Campbell is worth a new deal. Finally, our defence needs serious investment if we ever want to win the league.

If we bumble our way to third by a few points this summer… City, Spurs and Liverpool invest spend millions, we’ll be behind them this time next year. Wenger now has money, he has to prevent that happening. Project youth was a good idea at the start, but kids can’t learn from kids and the entitlement the youngsters feel doesn’t give them a winning attitude.

This season is now starting to look like a worse season than last year. We finished impressively last year with a great streak in the league. Right now, we’ve lost 8 games compared to last seasons six. Last year we reached the champions league semi final and the FA Cup semi final. This year, we didn’t go as far in either. Where exactly would you say we’ve improved? A few extra points against the teams we drew against last  year? A Belgian defender we all love, who has failed to stem the flow of goals? And we’ve conceded more goals.

We need winners this summer and we need the manager to admit to not include kids in his squad that are incapable of playing next season. Trim the 60 man squad if you need to free up salary, get rid of the dross and give us 22 players who have the drive to justify wearing the red and white of Arsenal.

Yesterday was the worst day of our season so far, not because it was a freak result, but because attitude determined it.

Have a great day Grovers, catch up with you later.

Update: Shocking to learn that the only player who went over to clap the away fans was Theo. Bravo Theo, shame on the rest of the team… The away fans support has been tremendous all year, they didn’t deserve a shun after that performance. It takes 2 minutes to give the fans a clap. I hope Gazidis highlights that to the manager.

ferguson has plenty off bosses at utd, they always wheel out the busby thing and charlton and the rest are always keeping him on his toes, united are good at that.

  2. A

Certainly not that highly Maciek. We need a top top quality player, a leader and organiser, someone who will keep Vermy in line when he gets over excited and goes running out of position against big clubs.

We need someone better than vermy, not someone who will never be world class, just a typical english defender, with a tiny bit more ability, but not enough to lead a championship challenging defence.

If gallas stayed i’d be ok with cahill as understudy, but imo we still need someone better but younger than gallas

  3. finestcuts

Fair enough A, I see your point, I haven’t been watching the reserves so I’ll believe you but we should not have given him a contract if he’s not a Prem keeper, we’re a Prem club. And yes, against Fulham he saved our bacon big time…..that’s why I got the impression he had what it takes.

  4. finestcuts

OK thanks for clearing that up Maciek……I’m with patthegooner on Metzelder….free transfer, experienced….first choice German national team centre back…and we should get some more quality at the back.

  5. finestcuts

I don’t fancy any Bolton defenders thanks very much, we should be aiming for defenders who are internationals…..title winners….

  6. Maciek

I see Finest. Metzelder can do the job, but only if he will be our 3rd cb, behind Vermy and when Gallas decides do go.

Vermy and Kjaer or Zapata or this Ciani if he is any good.

    And bring Martin KEOWN BACK!!!!!!!!

  7. A

yeah finest he did have the one spectacular game against fulham, but then again almunia and fabianski have had exceptional games!

we need someone with the consistency.

Agree about the defender, though title winners is irrelevant, it’s the quality of the player that matters, and the right sort of player to compliment vermy.

There must be some top quality defenders someone in Europe, certainly better than the over-rated, over-hyped, over-priced flavour of the month englishman.

Exactly the same with regards to keepers, fuck hart, we need to quality.

  8. Confidentgoner

Goalkeepers make mistakes, that’s how goals are scored. The lad only made one mistake -the 2nd goal. The 3rd goal , no keeper could have saved that with that curl on the shot. Where was the mid and defense? Please cut Fabianski some slack guys!

  9. David

    Cmon A,

Don Mannone has actually won us a game or two by his performances! You can hardly say that about Flapianski

    Guys, who is Ciani?

    —-
ciani is a french young defender, 22 years of age, very promising, had his first cap recently. but still makes mistakes. he plays for Bordeaux

  11. incesc

    a

When has fabianki ever had an exceptional game?

    he is seriously shit.

he dropped the fucking ball on titus brambles waiting head.

    :)

  12. David

No no I disagree Mannone was terrible against West ham he made a mistake that Fabianski and Almunia make week in and Week out

The difference being that Fabianski and Almunia might but the ball into their own net versus palming it to an opposing player

    Actually fabianski has done both.

  13. A

wigan last season he was amazing incesc, that double save at the end was unbelievable, and at the end of the season before against stoke he had an absolute wonder game as well, man of the match

  14. SUGA3

    ‘he is seriously shit’

I have been saying that for a while – fuck all development since his arrival and I watched him before he was even rumoured to come…

once rumours were out, I thought it was a shit idea…

  15. David

    A

That was in the Carling Cup. And it was a lucky double save because the player shot the ball right back at him.

Thats the only thing he’s done…its like people trying to justify almunia is a decent keeper because of the first leg of the CL at Old Trafford.

  16. A

Actually David you can say that about Fabianski – he’s just been in the firing line more so made more mistakes.

If Mannone was back up to Almunia coming in here and there he would’ve been far worse imo, as he was just playing with no pressure in the reserves!

Neither are good enough, Fabianski seems to lack the mental strength, another Senderos, but Mannone just doesn’t have the natural ability.

It’s like the laughable people who claimed when bendtner was missing chances that jay simpson should play ahead of him, or sanchez watt. It’s just plain ridiculous

  17. David

    Why is that laughable A?

I mean you give a player a chance to prove his worth he will do it.

Its not as if Bendy has been scoring 9 in 11 for the last 2 years he’s been shoved down our throats in the team

  18. incesc

“It’s like the laughable people who claimed when bendtner was missing chances that jay simpson should play ahead of him, or sanchez watt. It’s just plain ridiculous”

    i completely agree with that.

But Fabianski doesnt just have bad games, he makes some of the worse goalkeeping mistakes I have ever seen almost every game he plays.

  19. David

Sanchez Watt has done admirably when he’s come on.

Is like saying we should be greatful for Denilson because Eastmond is laughable.

  20. SUGA3

    gambon,

at this moment and on this form I would have him in the squad over Eduardo…

Watt is still young, will come good, probably not at Arse though…

  21. A

Sanchez watt and simpson are not good enough for the premier league, let alone for us. Sanchez watt has something about him, although limited footballing ability, but he can’t even get games in league 1.

    It really is laughable.

Simpson would not have been good against Wigan, Vela is ten times the player he is, he would’ve been way better, and i’d rather have luke freeman there to come off the bench than simpson

  22. A

watt isn’t even able to get into a league one team, he is even further away than jay simpson, though i reckon he has the potential to be better than him

  23. David

Admittedly i havent seen Simpson but if your using the Wigan game to judge Fabianski as a good player why not Simpson?

His off the ball movement was fantastic…his pace was electric and his finishing would only make Bendtner have a wet dream.

  24. SUGA3

    A,

Luke Freeman over Simpson? you have got to be fucking kidding me – at this moment it’s no contest for me…

Simpson would add some power and presence amongst these pansies – at least he is not afraid to take people one on one instead of passing sideways in front of a fucking bus…

  25. Gooby

get real fellas. simpson is a championship player. if he comes to our first team he will be murdered on Le Grove™ every day

  26. A

who’s using the wigan game to judge fabianski as a good player david?

and his off the ball movement and finishing are absolutely laughable, as you admit yourself, you really havn’t seen much of him! he is an absolutely attrocious finisher, and has no movement whatsoever, he makes bendnter look like rvn in terms of that!

He’s quick, kicks the ball pretty hard, has ok feet whilst dribbling, and is stocky, that’s about all there is to him

his lack of movement, composure, intelligence, just terrible passing, is why he may never make it as a premiership player, and certainly never good enough for us.

  27. SUGA3

and he has something most of these primadonnas clearly are lacking – it’s called heart…

and is much more likely to play for the fucking shirt!

  28. incesc

any way hopefully next season we will have some proper players, we wont have to argue about which reserve players are better. Bendtner should be our reserve striker, possibly 4th choice. The other 3 should be top internationals.

  29. A

yeah suga, freeman over simpson EVERY time! far better all round footballer. Vela has everything simpson has in terms of directness, but is actually a very good player too. Eduardo even in his current state is ten times the player simpson is. He couldn’t even get near our bench.

  30. Gooby

wenger imo knows who can make it in the prem and who won’t. young players who leave rarely return at a top club. they usually stay below top4 standard

  31. SUGA3

    A,

all the players that were shat on by Spuds and Wigwam possess great footballing ability and other bollocks I can’t be arsed to mention in abundance…

    so what?

  32. gambon

To make it at Arsenal Jay Simpson would have to be the best player in the championship, which he isnt.

How mortified would you be if you heard we were gonna sign Robert Earnshaw??….well thats the level Simpson is at.

  33. David

    I cant agree with that…

The first goal he scored against Wigan was exceptional movement…and Wilshere did brilliantly to find him for the 1-1 situation.

If Simpsons finishing is laughable I’m guessing Bendtner’s finishing is a riot circus.

  34. incesc

“and he has something most of these primadonnas clearly are lacking – it’s called heart…”

    haha thats some assumption.

When hes played against some top sides and done it week in week out maybe we can properly asses his “heart”

  35. David

Moses was the best player in the Championship and he skinned Sagna so many times i thought I was watching Justin Hoyte.

    Maciek

  36. Gooby

    incesc

we can’t have 3 international stars in our team. how do you keep them happy when we play lone striker.

in fact bendy is the star sriker for danemark and i’d like to see what he can do at the WC

  37. SUGA3

    A,

yes, I do appreciate that Freeman is a better footballer, however it’s not always about the pure ability, no?

Raw power, stamina, good attitude and heart – Romford Pele, anyone?

  38. SUGA3

    Maciek,

no, not yet, I reckon he should spend a season or two more on loans, possibly come back for 2011/12 season to play in the cups and against shit teams…

  39. Stu

Cahill is shit. Hes made huge mistakes against chelsea and united this season and has an appauling record of just 4 clean sheets this season while he has been playing. I know its Bolton but thats just makes it even worse. Why would we buy an defender from a team who cant defend.

  40. SUGA3

and oh, A, 12 goals in 36 this seasonis not exactly a ‘laughable’ return – care to remind me which of our strikers got anywhere near that? you can choose: games or goals?

  41. incesc

the only “youth” i want in the side next year is fabregas, with walcott bendtner, nasri and wilshere from the bench and sparingly.

    :)

  42. Jaguar

Stu mate,we buy players from the teams which have our same philosophy(Cant defend to save their life).Bolton fits the category well.

My insider reports that he saw Wenger talking to the chewing gum addict Scot scum Fergie, enquiring about any other cheap Francophonic geriatrics, who are available for free.

  43. Gooby

    Jaguar

hello, what do you think of diaby’s development? how does he fit the system? how do you rate his potential? and do you think he is the next paddy?

    in details please

  44. Maciek

Suga, so maybe Mark Swartzer(sp) till Wojtek is ready?

Why do buy Lloris or Adler when we do have Szczęsny?

    Just my opinion.

  45. A

lol seriously suga?! any of our strikers would score a goal a game in the championship! 12 in 36 at that level is terrible for anyone with premiership ambitions!

no jaguar if we sign cahill as a starter i’d be very annoyed, because he isn’t good enough.

moses was not the best player in the championship either, not by some distance

  46. finestcuts

All these youths like Sanchez Watt and Simpson…..the question is, when have we last produced a homegrown player? Not someone like Cesc who we got from Barca’s academy who was already well grounded in the princples of technical football.

Kieran Gibbs……….and will he oust Clichy? I doubt it.

I’m questioning how much is spent on the academy, how much is earned from it and how much does the first team benefit?

  47. SUGA3

all I am saying is that we could do with a few raw power type of players to prevent superstars from being run into the ground…

why not play these players against Wigwams of this world? with good service he would return 10+ goals if played sparingly…

  48. Jaguar

Gooby mate,I have always maintained that he is an average player at best, though he was even worse at the start of the season.I was right about Denilshite,Diaby, Shitvestre and Clownmunia. And I was branded a Spud for saying the truth.

  49. incesc

“Why do buy Lloris or Adler when we do have Szczęsny?”

erm because we are fed up of waiting and want a proper experienced and quality keeper between the sticks next season.

  50. Jaguar

Valid point,Finest mate.Apart from Gibbs and Wilshere no one will cut the mustard. So much for our talented youth!

  51. SUGA3

    A,

well, any striker should go into deep double figures with a service like that…

but fuck me, these fairies thought the game was won once we were 2:0 up – we should have hit them for 7, ffs…

  52. gambon

    Suga

The fact is that if any half decent prem striker was in the championship they would comfortably be the best player in the whole division.

If Agbonlahor, Saha, Rodallega literally anyone played down there they would look awesome.

Simpson is maybe a prem player at a lower level, but no way a big team player.

  53. Stu

Coquelin, Bartley, Murphy etc etc they may not all turn out world class but they will all turn out to be pretty decent players imo.

  54. finestcuts

Well I’m glad to hear the academy is profitable A……because it seems like there are a whole bunch of players who will never make our first team.
And since we’re making profits on academy sales, why have these not been re-invested into the first team?
Or have they indirectly through wages?

  55. incesc

“Why do buy Lloris or Adler when we do have Szczęsny?”

did wenger say this? jeez, i m hopeless

    haha

    no it was just Maciek

  56. finestcuts

We should stick Chesney in as no.1 if we don’t buy…….the lad has talent, no one doubts it……..but we should give him competition and we should make it as strong as possible. Mannone is no competition for Chezzers…….so get someone he’ll have to compete with for the no.1 shirt.

  57. Maciek

Our Academy has made about 53 m profit since it was built.

I think that Wilshaire, Gibbs and this Afobe kid will make it. I haver heard some great things about Barazite as well.

  58. Jaguar

It would be foolish to thrust him as no:1 next season. One odd mistake, and everyone will be after his head.

  59. finestcuts

Jag, it’ll happen to every new no.1, it’s down to them to make as few as possible…..they get paid big bucks and it’s a high pressure job………they’re there to save us if the team play badly.

  60. zeus

Someone mentioned bringing in Logan Bailly. Appatently he is the GK for the Belgian National team and plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Don’t know squat about him though.

  61. el tel

I would take Gordon Banks with one eye at a pensioners age above Coco and Fab 2.

I agree that Mannone is limited but for me he is a lucky keeper, maybe thats what we need for the rest of the season.

  62. zeus

    el tel

So against up-for-it Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Craig Bellamy we should field a young keeper with only 5 games under his belt while we are in trouble of not cementing 3rd place? pfffff

  63. Big Raddy

If the reports from Brentford are correct then Chesney appears to be the real deal.

I disagree about protecting him. If he is good enough, he is old enough.

Take Casillas or going back a bit Shilton (17yo when he started in Leicester first team). Chesney will have to handle the pressure sooner or later, and if not next season, what is the point of a loan deal?

Keep Coco as his no.2. Or sign Jaaskalinen/Sorensen as backup.

  64. Pat

Speaking of keepers, Fabianski has been crossed of the list for Poland, according to their keeping coach.

For the next 3 friendlies, Boruc will be #1, Szczesny and Kuszczak will be #2/#3

  65. Gooner

It’s the same every fucking year with Wenger! He says he’s looking at players and that he may buy, and every fucking year we believe him! And every year we are let down with one medioka signing, why do we have so much faith in this guy! You know what it will be, nearing the end of the summer and we still haven’t bought anyone and Wenger will come up with yet another excuse! Van Persie coming back will be like a new signing, johan djourou will be like a new signing, the world cup has priced us out of the market, i have strong faith in this team, I don’t want to stump the young players growth! EVERY FUCKING YEAR THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS, DOES NO ONE REALISE WENGER IS A STUBBORN CUNT WHO WONT CHANGE HIS FUCKING POLICY, DOES ANYONE REALISE THAT THIS MAN MAY LOSE US A WORLD CLASS CENTRE BACK IN WILLIAM GALLAS BECAUSE OF WENGERS STUPID ONE YEAR POLICY WHEN I BELIEVE HE GAVE SILVESTRE OF ALL PEOPLE TWO YEARS!!!

Enough of me ranting, anyone think we should sell Clichy and move Vermaelan to centre back? Managers target Clichy’s inability to defend, he has no end product at the other end of the pitch and we have Gibbs coming through. We want a big, solid back four that teams will fear, not a bunch of lightweights…

  66. Le Invicible

taig….i believe that a big mistake wenger made was to exclude wilshere, vela and merida. They would have been better for the squad instead of Denilson, Eduardo and dare i say it, Rosicky.

  67. CHIPPY

    Morning All,

    Chozzer,
Cheers for that but im fucked if it worked on mine will have another listen tho later and see if i did owt wrong!

For once Wrighty has hit the nail on the head with regards the truth coming out of the club Ivan are you listening?

  68. lee gould

great read , however for your information none of the team came to the away supporters to clap us after we travelled for 5 hours , included Theo !
