Most improved Arsenal player? Start with Nasri.

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So I listen to many bloggers, some good, some odd and some just mind blowing, I often listen to people telling me who the most improved player is, without going to the dark side let me make a short list. Before some of you have a fit, SONG isn’t on the list because he did his improving last season and he can’t keep getting the accolade.

EBOUE

DIABY

NASRI

ROSICKY

And the winner is…Nasri. How anybody could think anyone else should get that title is strange, but he for me has transformed himself culminating by the best performance from an Arsenal player this season since a few from Vermaelen, who can’t win it because he has been great from the off.

The Cesc performance against the spuds was awesome, but we come to expect that from our young talisman, but Nasri is coming good at the right time, as is Rosicky, Eboue and Diaby.

I was watching Toulalon and Lloris last night against the superstars of Madrid, hmmm, I’d take those two wouldn’t you?

Another improved player has to be Song, I agree, even though it hurts me to admit it, but he is a different player to what he was, he still has a long way to go and that’s why I would sign another defensive midfielder, one – so he can learn and two – because you need at least 2 players in each spot for cover and for competition. That player cannot be Denilson, so unless he does an Eboue in the next 2 months, we need to replace him.

One of the reasons we have this ‘most improved player’ thing every season is because they are getting older, by the time they start moving into their twenty’s they have grown, fully formed, are stronger and at last are ready to be Arsenal players, playing them so young is unfair, because they not only get stick for inept performances, they get horrendous injuries like Theo and Ramsey because their bodies aren’t yet ready.

So the most improved players on my list are all grown ups, I think we should look to bolster our squad with a few players of the right age, Denilson could make it next year, but why should we keep accommodating young players that may or may not make it, Senderos is a classic.

I know it’s tough spotting who will and who won’t, but with talent like Wilshere and JET coming through I don’t think we should keep persisting with players that we know won’t make it, we all knew Senderos wouldn’t, yet year in, year out he wasn’t replaced, now he’s slipped quietly out the door never to be seen again, unless of course Everton don’t want him.

Song won’t be going to Hull as he is suspended, so who will play? I suspect it will be Denilson, god help us, we need him to start proving his worth before it costs us the chance to win the title. I think he’s drinking in the last chance saloon.

Madrid are out and that has to be good news, I now want to avoid the chavs and mancs, not because they are any good, but because we seem to roll over when we play them, I also want to avoid Barca, Lyon and Bayern, the truth is I don’t want to play anyone and hope for a free pass all the way to the final!

We know that won’t happen so we should just enjoy it, one thing’s for sure, no one will want to play us!

Have a great day Grovers, two more to go, and we could be top of the league! Whoohoo!!!

He wouldn’t have to play in the champions league then BBK…. lol im sure they would qualify for it at the end of the season.

  2. David

Project youth is still 2-3 years from completion?

Really Chris who told you that? Where did you get the manual from?

So why has Wenger been telling us we will win major honors this season?

What about players like Quincy, Bently, Senderos, Aliadiare etc etc etc etc….

More misses than hits would suggest its a catastrophy.

Gibbs hasnt made anything or done anything about anything. Hasnt even started for England.

No Zeus, Liverpool took away their record before we won there.

The reason we don’t beat them is because either we aren’t good enough, or our manager is tactically inept.

Truth is, a bit of both.

    ——————-

    Our manager is Tactically inept.

Mourinho had his way with Wenger.

  4. Stu

He has started for England under 21s David. Thats very good considering he only got into our first team last season.

  5. Kreshnik

    hola grovers,

    who’s watching the bindippers ?

Now it’s not even funny anymore, I really worry that they won’t do any damage to either of the chavs or mancs.
I had hopes on those fuckers

  6. David

If Joining the England Under 21′s is an indication of Talent then Steven Taylor must be best thing since Nesta.

  7. zeus

    @ Kreshnik.

No worries. They will do the job against those 2 I’m sure. Not coming 4th is akin to getting relegated, they will have to come good. By then Aquilani will be back as well.

Its like us when we are completly out of the title race by November, when we meet United and Chelsea we take points off them, the matter is when were are in the race we seem to choke. Pool will win 1 and draw one, I’m calling it now.

  8. Stu

I never said it was an indication of anything. I was just responding to your comment about him not starting for england. He is clearly not going to get into the first team after just breaking into his clubs first team.

He is a youth so playing for england u21 is the equilivant of a senior player playing for the full team.

  9. Pat

Cesc didn’t play the first game against Hull either. He’ll be gutted. I’m sure he fucking hates them as much as we do now

  10. Stu

Also, if playing for the u21s means nothing then playing for the full team must mena nothing either…especially if Heskey, Shawcross, Downing etc get call ups.

  11. Stu

Maybe missing Cesc isnt the worst thing. He played when we lost at the emirates last season and missed the away match we won 3-1. So he has played once against Hull and we lost, missed the 2 matches we beat them in.

  12. Stu

Hahaha liverpool are so shit its both hillarious and tragic. Landreau has been very good for Lille though. Carragher should have conceded a pk there..blatant foul.

  13. David

    what a miss

    Stu

Heskey et all are established talents and regulars for England. Has fuck all to do with project youth.

  14. Stu

All im saying is that Gibbs has played for the england u21 in response to you saying he hasnt played for england. Lets just leave it at that.

  15. Kreshnik

zeus … i’d truly and unconditionally take that.

If they would fight for 4 it could dfntly happen … but the way they are playing … don’t even know if they are even competing for 4th at all.

  16. David

The link up play to Dzeko is criminal…which is why Arsenal need a striker like that…when sexy football is not happening a striker to create something out of nothing.

  17. David

Obviously he has…but thats no indication of anything.

At what age did Walcott get called up to the first team?

  18. Stu

Clearly Theo cant be used as an example. He got his first call up based on Sven Watching a video and listening to Wenger.

  19. David

Ok..you dont like Walcott…how bout Micheal Owen?

Really youre age has nothing to do with it…and getting called up to the U-21 is no indication of whether you will make it at the top level or not otherwise…

Scot Carson, Tom Huddlestone, David Prutton, Fabrice Muamba, Jermaine Pennant etc etc

Would be considered Class now wouldnt they?

  20. David

Heskey, Bridge, Johnson, Brown, Shawcross, Upson

All established players for their respective clubs…and are doing quite well really!

  21. Stu

If age has nothing to do with it why did you chose Owen as an example. Im sure its just a coincidence that he became the youngest player and scorer at the time.

My point is Gibbs hasnt played enough club games to be considered for the england team. Not to mention he has been injured all season and imo had he not been he would have been a strong contender for the left back slot for the WC, especially considering Bridge pulling out and Cashley being injured.

  22. Stu

In fairness those players are fairly average at best. Bridge and Johnson cant defend for shit, Heskey cant score for shit, Brown is a back up at the very best of times and Shawcross just got into the team as a bonus for breaking an arsenal players leg.

  23. David

    Im a big Gibbs fan.

But for all the talent we’ve seen in the past…

Pennant, Aliadiare, Quincy, Francis Jefers, Senderos, Bentley the list is forever is no indication of whether Gibbs will make it or not…and is certainly no indication if project youth is working or not.

  24. Stu

But all those players that didnt come through the system, they were all bought and brought in as youths.

Pennant was the most expensive teenager when we bought him. And didnt we buy Jeffers off Everton when he was about 20 and after more than a season in their first team.

I agree the whole youth thing hasnt been a success as of yet but I would say it has been a failure.

You wont see immediate results with something like this. Wenger started a proper academy when he took over and we are only seeing the fruits of its labour now because the likes of Wilshere, Lansbury, Ayling, Watt, JET etc have been with the club since they started playing, rather than youths being bought from other countries, which is what we used to do.

  25. David

We are still buying…i’m pretty sure we bought Walcott..im pretty sure we bought Fabregas…im pretty sure we bought Gibbs from the Keye Dons…

So i dont get the point…Project Youth is about Buying youth players and growing them.

Apart from Wilshere i cant think of anyone else that has been at the club since age 9?

  26. vinnyjones

i am a massive nasri fan, and have to agree with your observations geoff.
as for lloris totally agree. he was even better in the first leg. amazing for his age.
would take him in the blink of an eye. i think the future is safe for us as long as wenger is in charge. we have so much young talent it`s crazy, and one of the best managers in the business when it comes to judging talent.i must admit that over the past few seasons i have been very frustrated as a long time fan, and used to curse wenger`s name when he talked about being patient and to believe in him. but i am now a believer. barring any more long term injuries and depending on who we draw in the quarter finals we have a realistic chance of winning both the league and UCL.

  27. Stu

Yeah Paul, he didnt even turn his back though. Completely moved out of the way as if he wanted to give Zebina a free run into the box.

  28. Jules78

Eden Hazard is the one I want this summer, the boy’s got skill and is perfect for our 4-3-3. Would keep Arshavin and Theo on their toes. He’ll more than likely be sold in the summer and I hope we don’t miss out just cause arsene won’t put the money on the table.

  29. gambon

    David,

Ozil is too much of a central player to replace Arshavin. More like a Cesc replacement.

Why do we want to replace Arshavin?

  30. Jules78

and the perfect one for that IMO is E.Hazard: pace skill, precocious talent, european experience… in every way a new generation Arsenal player type and potential Wenger love son

  31. David

Gambon Arsh has 2 years left on his contract.

Hes already been moaning about the money he’s getting is not enough..and this year he’d be 29.

You know the policy…we are losing Gallas to the Bizare 1 year contract rule and When Arsh contract is out it wont be up for Renewal.

If you watching this Bremen vs Valencia game…

Ozil is playing on the left in the Arsh position

  32. zeus

    @ Jules

14m should do it for a 19 year old. I would love to get him in as well. He has got pace, real pace and trickery, just like Arshavin. Only thing is Arsha is a 1/2 an hour player, this kid can play full 90.

  33. Pedro

    Evening all!

I agree, I don’t think Arshavin will be going anywhere this summer… I’m not sure he’s caught the eye enough this season and I’m not sure if he’d go.

  34. David

jules I agree but what is the likelihood?

I dont think Wenger likes direct players too much.

Hazard still has a couple years left on his contract which means he’d be worth 15 plus…

Seeing as we have more pressing issues…GK, DM, CB…i cant see it happning unfortunately

  35. zeus

    15+ is worth it David.

Since we are sure to get Chamakh on the free we save money there. Don’t be surprised if he does make a move for Hazard though.

It would be very Wenger-like to need to strengthen at the back and go out to but a striker. He has done that before, especially if he convinces Gallas to stay.

Surely GK is a MUST too.

  36. zeus

BTW, some of you should probly switch to watch to Sporting game. I NEVER want to hear the name of Miguel Veloso again. That guy has 1 hell of an agent. AVERAGE.

  37. zeus

    sixx pac

No way. Whywould he go there. You tell me who in that team he can displace? NO ONE.

Plus Zidane can talk til he is blue in the face. He only has swing with the frenchies. Hazard is Belgian

  38. gambon

    Zeus,

Pretty sure Zidane has sway with anyone.

Theres no way we will sign Hazard, too much competition, Wenger wont go up against the big clubs.

  39. Jules78

Zeus & David – agree with you both: he can run for 90 min and 15M is probably what it’s gonna take meaning not that expansive but possibly above Wenger’s fancy… also we do have more pressing issue but he’s not one we want to miss out on. Im pretty sure he’ll be up for sale and tho he’ll have big clubs knocking at his door, very few can offer him the development opportunity we do.

  40. David

    Jules

I fancy a front 3 with Hazard and Walcott on both wings…We will prob blow through teams with the kind of blinding speed/pace in there…

But unfortunately we know what Wenger will do….

I think hed rather go for Ozil on the cheap than blow the cash on Hazard.

But then again…he might not buy anyone altogether.

  41. David

This is why English refs dont make it to the World Cup.

Dodgy decision for a pk…and now a fucking red card.

  42. Jules78

David, yes. A typical Wenger line would be: we nearly signed him for nothing when he played for Belgium U17 but he didn’t want to move so soon and now the market’s gone crazy… the flip side of the coin would be how how much Aliadiere and Merida cost you altogether and one of them turned out not tobe so talented, got fucked up early and the other’s giving you the finger and oh remember Reyes? Harzard is definitely worth a go.

  43. YON

ANGEL DI MARIA!!! The player we need to pursue. I think he is probably the most equipped to do damage in this league.

  44. zeus

Zidane has sway yes, but if he can’t get Ribery to go there then his power to persuade comes into question.

Either way I ask again, who can he displace in that first 11 much less squad. That Madrid team is set in stone for the forseeable future. You can’t exactly sayI’m going to get someone who is better than CR9 Kaka and Benzema can you? There are very few that can meet that criteria.

  45. zeus

    YON

That ship has sailed. Saw him at the under 20 WC in Canada in 2007. Wenger went in for him and more money was needed or the kid wised up and decided he would not need to go out on loan or get a permit to play in Portugal.

He would cost a fortune now. Something very Van Persie-esque I thought when I saw him back then. He is going to be Massive for Argentina in South Africa.

  46. gambon

Alan Dzagoev is the best young player in Europe, dont know if we would fit him in our new formation though.

  47. David

Di Maria is not impressive…for me it was Messi that Ran the team then…Even Aguerro was shocking at the U20 World cup…and to be fair if not for the more experienced players like Riquelme im pretty sure the Nigerians wouldve won it.

  48. Pat

u-20 world cup Aguero was simply amazing David. MOTM against Poland and knocked us out 3-1 I think in the quarters.

  49. YON

FUNNY LINE from Liverpool forum about signings for next season… “no doubt Rafa has his eye on some overweight slow defensive Albanian currently milking goats somewhere north of aberdeen with a wife name Brian….”

  50. zeus

    David

What are you on? Aguero was the man of the tournie and he got the golden boot as well.

Di maria was not the first choice, zarate was but hegot injured. Di maria came in and set the place alight.

    Ben Arfa just scored.

  51. zeus

    David Says:

He was shocking in the finals…i think he was subbed off early even.
    ————————–
If your talking about Di maria in 2007 then I think youare mistaken. He was injured and did not take part.

Zarate scored the winner after some other guy came off whoever was partnering aguero.

  52. zeus

Hazard recently signed a contract anyway. He is at the club until 2014. If we want him, then we have to go deep in the pocket.

  53. Sveinn G

I´m in Boston over the week end and need a place down town to watch the Hull game.

    Any advises out there?

  54. Kreshnik

Pedro if u come anywhere near 2 tickets for Wolves, I’m still on the hunt. Dude didn’t answer so I’m guessing that’s a no.

Too far a trip to leave the game tickets for the last second.

  55. sixx pac

pedro says: pretty silly statement sixx. 42 goals a season..who would want that in thier team. Thats not what i meant pedro. He would not fit in our system because our players dont get a lot of time on the ball to do the fancy things ronaldo and hazard do. We pass, pass, pass, pass shoot. They run, dribble, shimmy, shoot. If Nasri played in a system like utd’s he would be the sickest thing in football.

  56. Pat

“Leave me alone,” he jokingly told journalists as soon as the idea was put to him at Thursday’s press conference. “I always go to the end of my contract and I am going until 2011. So there is no way.

“For me, it is the worst moment to come back on this” he went on.

“At the moment I focus on Hull City.

“That maybe less glamorous than Real Madrid but they are much more important in my life at the moment.”

  57. ttm

denilson jumpstarted our season with that thunderbolt against the toffees.

why do we continue to slag him off?

  58. gambon

    sixx pac

Nasri is a good player, no more at this point, hes not gonna suddenly become great playing in an almost identical, just slightly deeper system.

Similar with Ronaldo, he is at worst the second best player in the world, he would look just as good anywhere.

If Nasri would be so unbelievable in UTDs system then that must make Wenger a pretty fucking awful manager for not playing that system.

  59. gnarleygeorge9

MMmmmmmmm!!! Most improved would have to be, IMHO, Diaby (The D-Train) He has been putting in solid performances for a while now, whereas Nascar is a “one swallow doesn’t make a Summer”. But if the Porto performance is a taste of things to come, well then he could be a sensation. Chamoneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

  60. ethangunner

I think he’s drinking in the last chance saloon.

    —————————
do you really think wenger has a last chance saloon ?

i think its more like an all you can eat buffet .
    :)

everyone keeps coming back for 2nds :)

  61. sixx pac

im dissapointed gambon. I expected more. Thats why im wrong. Ronaldo was the most important player at utd last season. Nasri is not our most important system so wenger isnt gonna change the system to fit him. Im not discounting that Ronaldo would be great in any team( he is the best in the world) but in our team, playing the same s ystem we play now,he would not account for half of our goals

  62. ethangunner

    6 pac -

your kidding right ? ronaldo is more clinical
than anyone weve got .. how can you make that outrageous statement that he wouldn’t score half of our goals ??

ok he might not score half .. but it would be close enough :)

im pretty certain he would out score anyone we own currently ..

but i cant prove that fact , but ..

    then neither can you :)

  63. km

Ronaldo was out on the Right wing last season. he may have scored more goals 2years ago however i thought he was even better last year because he had so much confidence.

At present the Arsenal system is really suited to Fabregas or the AM (atm Nasri) who plays as the attacking midfielder with two midfielders behind protecting/giving the ball to him.

  64. Pat

CR isn’t clinical Ethan. He scores a lot because he shoots a lot. He’s definitely not more clinical than Cesc has been this season.

Still, the goal he scored yesterday was Guti’s brilliance. Perfect pass, bad goalkeeping

  65. gnarleygeorge9

You’d hope CR wouldn’t score many goals with his head tho ethan. The grease that he’d leave on the ball might make it slippery of our strikers :)

  66. Pat

I wouldn’t even have CR as #2 in the world this season. Based on what exactly? When he was injured Madrid didn’t really miss him. Its when Higuain was injured where they struggled the most.

I think Madrids best player this season has been Higuain so far, not CR.

  67. sixx pac

ethan look at the goals ronaldo scored for utd. The majority of them came from deep or out wide. The majority of them were when he was dribbling from deep. There is no way a midfield player would have that much time consistently on the ball in our system. If our system was changed then that would be different. But in our pass, pass, pass system, it would not work. Fact

  68. Pat

A majority of CR’s goals were actually from the middle. A lot of those “right place right time” goals. Plenty of counters as well.

  69. ethangunner

    6pac

im not going to get to stuck in to hypotheticals debates , i am going into the A zone when waffling on such matters , but based on his continual presence in the EPL top scorers ladder
and the fact that wenger is the best molder of talent around i dont think it would take Einstein to work out wenger would play him 1stly where ever he wanted too , and where we as a team would get the most out of him >!

you dont think he wouldn’t score with rosicky AA23,nasri , theo and cesc around him ?

if you dont think so then your delusional flat out ..

and i dont like the greasy slime ball myself , but i recognize talent ..

and yes a lot of big Ego’s in RM , im sure
they still need to fine tune some things like any team does that makes that many changes in a season , but hey they are still on top of the la liga pile , so it didnt take too much transition !

it sure as shit didnt take 6 years of transition did it ?!

i think personally its quite low to laugh at RM’s problems , when our back yard for the past 5 years has been cluttered with them more than most clubs .!

also you cannot compare him in the UK too Spain.
its like chalk and cheese ..

compare his bet season in the EPL to his 1st season in Spain really isnt much of an argument , its more like loading the argument in your favor .

  70. David

    i think i do agree with 6pac

I doubt CR wouldve won the Ballon D’ Or playing in our system.

Wenger gave up the counter-attacking football long ago…and fergie furg has copying ever since.

  71. sixx pac

ethan i suggest u read further up in the comments to see where ia am coming from. I regard christiano ronaldo as the best player in the world. If he were to play at arsenal he would still be great. The fact i was making is that if Ronaldo or Hazard were to play in this system that we play in now where we practically walk the ball in the back of the net then he would not be as effective as he was at utd. Ronaldo is a player that requires a whole lot a time on the ball. Just like robinho. Arshavin is totally different. He can be trying to pass it back out to someone else, then change his mind and just rocket it in the back of the net

  72. Ja_Gunner

Team for Hull based on the injury reports…

    …………………Al/Fab…………………….
    Eboue……..Vermaelen……….Silvest……..Clichy
    …………………Denilson……………………
    …..Nas…………………………….Diaby……
    ..Theo…………….Bendy………………..Arsh…

Bench: Sol, Traore, Merida, Eddy, Vela, Bartley/Eastmond

  73. ethangunner

    6pac

still cant agree because if Ronaldo played for us he would change the way we play ..

since ade has left we dont play that hideous 4-5-1 crap … so you cant say wenger wouldnt put a player like that into a position to be lethal .
and change up the formation , or even the way we service the front line ..

to many ifs and buts to make statements like that ..

i can tell you this though , if i had a choice of him joining us or not id still say YES :)

X- manc or not he is a proven performer in the EPL .. if Spain was the right move for him or not , only time will tell .. but his Ego fits in well with RM .. and if he did join The Arsenal, Spain is the best next location for him :)

  74. Ja_Gunner

If we have a 3-4 goal lead….we should play the final 10 mins like this….

    ………………….GK………………………
    Eboue………Denilson………Silvest…….Clichy
    Arshavin……Diaby…………Merida……..Traore
    ……………..Theo……….Bendy……………

  75. Ja_Gunner

    ………………….GK………………………
    Eboue………Denilson………Silvest…….Clichy
    Arshavin……Diaby…………Merida……..Traore
    ……………..Theo……….Eddy……………

    This I mean

  76. ethangunner

    6 – pac

you have to bear in mind he is in a different League now , differing players around him ..
bigger Ego’s ,change in climate .. change in style of play ..

so many things to take into consideration ,
i suppose thats why you dont see many English players go over there ..

they should , better tax , better weather ..
    life ….

but they are just not good enough over all .
so i suppose what im trying to say its a bit hard to compare ronaldo in the EPL to his new club ..

take the look over a 3 year period at both clubs you might be able to work out if ronaldo is any lesser of a player or not .

but to compare him to his settled best in the EPL to his new move is a bit silly …

  77. sixx pac

Ethan debating with u is pointless. Wasnt i you who said you didnt want to deal with hypotethics. Im not debating whether or not he would change the system for ronaldo. What i am saying is that if ronaldo was playing in OUR SYSTEM WHERE WE PASS,PASS,PASS, AND OUR PLAYERS DONT GET A LOT OF TIME ON THE BALL, ronaldo would not be as effective as he was at utd. Surely you can understand that

  78. ethangunner

    6 – pac !

AA23 is not all pass -pass pass !

surely you can see that ???

ball goes to AA23 in an advanced position , he goes in !
lays it off .. SOMETIMES , not often !

    RONALDO – SAME …

    its not rocket science …

AA23 from the left ronaldo from the right ?
am i making it clear enough now ?

  79. ethangunner

Theo , takes the ball on the right wing and ends up most times (if he had the bottle ) 1 on 1 with the keeper …

    or a dead end ….

    ronaldo the same ..

you make it sound like ronaldo is from mars and wouldnt suit our squad ?!

we have a few very similar players to Ronaldo .
just not as technically gifted ..yet..maybe ..

but like i said i cant know this for sure ..
but going on his goal scoring record in the EPL .

    ID TAKE HIM !

  80. sixx pac

im done talking now ethan. Arshavin passes way more than Ronaldo so they are def not the same. Again ur missing the point of my Original statement. I think ur purposely doing it.

Ethan debating with u is pointless.

no debating with A is pointless . :)

    i listen ..

i understand what your trying to say without you saying it ..

but the truth is if he was really an option for us , most of us would take him ..

because you KNOW like i do , he wouldnt just be AVERAGE in our squad of passers !

he would be AA 23 or above …
he would manufacture runs , which keeps this team scoring ..

    and thats almost fact ..

ronaldo can play in this Leauge VERY WELL
    we know that ,
he is a 1 man army in England @ times.
    we know that ..

Rooney has 30 in 37 which is more impressive than 20 in 22, or whatever it is.

    1. More games played, so more accurate reflection.
    2. Harder league and a team thats reliant on Rooney.

Hull are unbeaten in 3 home games in a row. That includes Chelsea and Everton, I think.

I hope we take this game seriously.
