Anyway, we aren’t skint are we, so are we now going to spend some, or are we going to rebuild the Holloway road next?

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So a stirring post to start the day, a pop at the financial running of the club in the middle and now we’ll finish the day with this, 3 posts in one day who’s the lucky ones!

With the latest figures showing our debt is now just £190 million, in anyones book, that is amazing, £450 to £190mil in 5 years is fantastic, we’ve sold nearly all the flats and we are embarking on more community projects, great, now can we stop?

Can we stop telling the world and our fans we are skint, because we clearly aren’t.

It’s now time to stop re-building the Holloway road and start re-building the trophy cabinet, we have still got a 15 year mortgage and we don’t get gold stars for paying it back in record time, let’s stop making a load of average squad players wealthy and start making a decent team that can and will start stocking the trophy room again.

Let’s stop bragging how much we make on matchday because that money comes off the fans, so let’s start repaying that debt next.

At the end of the day we are a football team, not Marks & Spencers, we don’t need to appease analysts or shareholders, we need to appease the fans, now the debt is down, lets stop looking to pat ourselves on the head about how clever we all are, let’s look to start dominating football again.

We don’t need many players, just the right ones, now we have the money and very little debt let’s start using it, and go back to being a football club again, remember Arsenal?

Victory in harmony, let now have some of that back.

Have a great evening Grovers, tomorrow it’s back to being a football blog.

Geoff, are these multi-post days designed to catch out the TAIG’s and Sabeel’s of this world. Very cunning. Thanks for all of them.
    Have a great evening Grovers.

Indian_Gooner: Chess. Now there is a game, and you’re right, the Champion is Indian. There is a phennominal young Danish guy on the way. Bobby Fisher was the man for me.
Night all. I have some new Chilli sauces to try out.

  3. James

So the club has wiped £100m off the debt, leaving approx £200m. With interest, that’s probably £12m per year over 20 years – yet the club is making £64m profit per annum. What excuse has there been for Wenger not to spend at least £15m on a couple of quality players when the club is making a £52m net profit? None.

  4. sach

I guess if we look at it as in another year or 2 we will have no debt at all and all of our money can go on players wages etc.. However spending 30 mil in the summer wouldn’t go a miss! But I guess in a few years we will b stinkin rich and hopefully a squad capable of competing for 4 trophies!

  5. Maurya

    Pedro,
Good post. It is time to make use of our good financial footing to win some silverware. As you pointed out, Running football club is for winning silverware and creating a awesome brand. There are thousand better business out there to make money rather than running a football club. Hopefully, Wenger gets it.

  6. MM

Are you boys sure! we will put around some rumours over the world cup we are about to sign everyone. Get every one to renew there season tickets. Then come the middle of Aug sell Cesc for £50 mil AA for £30mil and the buy some 15 year old kid from the middle of africa.

  7. Gooner All Day Long

Clearly arsene wenger knows that during this period (which will last another few years)arsenal will NOT be domininating the league, winning alot of trophies. We will inevitably still see players being sold each year. As Le Grove says “we don’t get gold stars for paying it back in record time”.
    Get your checkbook out son,
There are two strikers that would win us games by themselves. Back in the day Henry did it for us. Now Drogba and Rooney are doing it for Chelsea and United. Who do we have now?? No-one…..Mario B from Inter and Romana L from Andelecth are the answers.
Both are young, strong and are monsters like Drogba.
Also they are not african so no going AWOL during january,

Good post, a good perspective one

£450 to £190mil in 5 years is fantastic..right…which makes it another 3 more years to make the debt zero

3 more years we have to put up with the same shit of being skint…thats the reality am afiard

    ur thoughts?

  9. MM

Just getting fed up with it all when i left the North Bank a few years back i was looking forward to the promise of mixing it with the big boys. Yet we have never looked any better then when we left. in fact i would take back the last few years at Highbury any time! Still lets hope the boss gets it right!

  10. Sabeel Indian Gunner

    C`mon Geoff

U know deep down, thats the reality,,if money still there wenger wont spend,we still need to wait for 3 more years as (450-190)/5 = 52million

    and 190/52 is roughly 3 years…

but i always respect, how u and pedro try to keep up the spirits of fans, knowing the dard reality, that we will be displayed as skint by the board for 3-4 more years..that makes it total of 9-10 years, since we embarked on project youth…

Sterling message Geoff! This IS a football club!! Not some illustration on how to run a modern corporation! What are they trying to do – get themselves into a business school text book?? Sorry for the rant people, its just fukin annoying.

  13. Kreshnik

    Sabeel … he is
But that’s only one of his properties … and according to me-self he has more good properties than bad ones … but that’s just me.

And me-self also would not pick any current coach ahead of him for Arsenal, except Dutch Frank.

  14. irish gooner

stop whinging, the trophys are coming.i expect that during the summer the signings will come aswell especially a keeper i think thats a must, another cb plus we already have chamakh, wenger is not egotistical,he does what he thinks is best for the team and club.

  15. Sabeel Indian Gunner

    Kreshnik

i dont dispute that wenger has more good qualities than bad,but the bad one is having a tuffer type of detrimenal effect in our title stint

for ex..jan trans window, came and gone..the result-> winning league becomes tuffer..

  16. Jaguar

Wenger doesnt do anything which is best for the club.Only a crazy nutcase would have selected Diaby ahead of Arshavin,in a cup semifinal. If he didnt consider,FA Cup as a trophy, why the feck did he brag that being in the semis of FA cup and CL was a great achievement. He is a hypocrite who changes his words everytime to suit his crazy obsessions.

  17. Jaguar

Wenger thinks that everyother manager is a mug.Wenger was rightly shown the middle finger by Moyes and Pulis on the deadline day.

  18. A

Football really is going to shit isn’t it – Pompey into administration, whispers that two other Prem clubs could have trouble paying their players before the end of the season and potentially follow them into admin, Chester are pretty much no more, Palace in admin and numerous other clubs very close to it.

How’s it all gonna be rectified?

  19. Mr B

I think the Arsenal PR machine has taken a page of Bush’s Warmongering book….. weapons of mass hyteria and what not.

  20. Dublin gunner!!!

Hey all!! Just wondering is tevez playing tomorrow for city? Then they might get a result an we could close d gap!!

  21. Pint

If anyone has taken a closer look at the report, you can draw some interesting conclusions.
Highbury Sq. – 534 units sold at £217M. With 131 units left, taking the average price that’s an extra £53.2M to come in.
£12.9M is still outstanding on the redevelopment loan balance, so just over £40M extra should be made in profit.

The most interesting bit was this, “At 30 November 2009 the Group had cash and bank balances of £101.0 million”.

So they have over £100M in the bank, £40M to come fom Highbury Sq., and very soon on the horizon is the new kit manufacturer deal as the Nike deal expires in 2011. Nike may choose to take out their option on this, but if they don’t then a new manufacturer may pay a large lump sum up front.
In any case the kit manufacturer money will be a new source of revenue as all of the current deal was paid up front nearly four years ago.

“By 30 November 2009, the Group’s total net debt had been reduced to £203.6m”

I think it’s entirely realistic this could be wiped out in the next 2-3 years.

  22. A

Yeah reggie, those are two I was thinking about, maybe Wigan too?

Everton at a push?? Always going on about having no money, Moyes being iffy about staying because of lack of investment, then they splashed the case on Fellaini and Bily? Probably not though.

Even Redknapp isn’t capable of crippling Spuds with Lewis bankrolling them!

  23. reggie 57

Wigan have got dave whelan bank rolling them so they should be alright, everton hmmm too big methinks wouldnt it be ironic if it was the spuds? Harry has worked his magic again…….

  24. reggie 57

Funniest moment on SSN was when Harry was asked about pompeys plight? when he said he cant understand what happened and why portsmouth were in the position that they are in… im shouting try looking in the mirror you Deputy Dawg lookalike!!!!

  25. Good to be a Goonah!!

The Sun think’s we are an average team. Uefa think we are amongst the best 5 sides in Europe. I dont read the Sun. Nor should you.

  26. LAzer

    Tevez back for Chav clash!

Sweet late posts Geoffory, gives us state siders a chance to blog. Stoke has a lot of belief going into this fixture, lets rock them when they are over confident and for godssake score an early goal for once.

  27. ritesh

Towels should be banned from the game.

Stoke play well, we have to be on form…Am glad Arshavin is getting a breather, he has played too much.

  28. leon

i feel there must be middle ground if look at manu who have huge amount of success on the field however that has come at extreme cost they have massive amounts of debt, chelsea slightly different they are not able to spend huge amounts as they cretid crunch as hit them,i feel this team is over cortious this is football team so it should be about winning things but at the same time you dont the team broke in the process, but this team will never ever beable to match chelsea mancity many barc madrid in terms of spending wenger will continue to go through youth route but i think he needs to bring in some experience too,i would expect any massive spending until the debt is completely paid

  29. SFOGooner

Stoke have a fa cup quarter final next week .. Hope they rest some players ..

Now how embarassing was that!. From invincibles to hoping stoke rest some players!.

  30. titan49

    Geoff,

A much better post than the one earlier today. At least here you are balanced. You aknowledge that the team has done very well to manage its finances (which lets face it, is crucial to the survival of any club nowadays), and you state your desire to win trophies too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all want the club to deliver, and I am confident they will soon. I hope to see more pragmatic articles like this one in the future, and not too many like the one earlier. Balanced arguments, discussion, maturity, appreciation, love for our club. Remember your responsibility to the fans. Good post.

  31. A

lol Villa and Chelsea SFO?! Two of the best defensive records in the league, not sure you can say our form is bad because of that!

Stoke have troubled everyone at home this season, but I really think they should be tired and underprepared, certainly compared to how they normally are. If we can keep them penned in and build pressure, get a couple of early goals we’ll be fine!

If Diaby was fit I’d very very confident, still not as worried as I could be though, the only away game we’ve lost this season against a non big team was Sunderland, anything but a win and it’s over though, a draw isn’t good enough.

  32. James

Another problem is that Wenger pays his nobodies such high wages that no other club will come in and buy them off us even if we want to get rid.

That means we get stuck with crap players like Senderos and have to wait for their contract to expire before we can get rid.

It also means that the wage ceiling is too high and we can’t afford to bring anyone else in without dumping players first. That explains why Wenger has to keep selling quality players, to free up wages for others to come in.

The whole project is a disaster.

  33. ritesh

We are still 200M in debt.

Thats not good. Hopefully by selling Cesc this summer, we can reduce the debt. Besides, Cesc cannot play with Denilson, he is stopping the poor guy from progressing.

  34. SFOGooner

But Still I am finding hard to be optimistic.. The FA Cup game is still fresh ..

We brought the first teamers on at 1-1 and still lost ..
Campbell got caught out for both goals ..

Maybe the fullbacks are better this time around .. But with clichy’s form I am not sure of that either ..

  35. ritesh

If these figures are correct it’s a fantastic achievement by the board and for that they deserve great credit.
When you see what is happening at Leeds, Portsmouth, Liverpool & Manchester Utd it’s a relief to know that our club’s future is on solid footing.
To imagine that the debt for the Emirates could be wiped out comfortably in another 5-10 years is quite an amazing achievement.
By then will Utd’s debt have scaled 1 billion? Who knows or cares?
Obviously it’s extremely disappointing for all of us that the club haven’t been as successful on the pitch as they we have been in business over the past 5 seasons.
But deep down I believe that most of us realised that moving to The Grove was going to tie our hands in the transfer market for at least 3-5 years as the club consolidated the debt.

  38. Jaguar

Money spent on improving the contracts of shit players instead of buying quality is termed opportunity loss is economics,Duckster.

  39. A

That FA Cup game where our kids, reserves, crocks, and cesc pulled Stoke all over the place and were 1-1 until late on??

Bringing on first teamers there isn’t really the same either….

For that game we’d played midweek, and they’d had a week to prepare too, the opposite of this week

  40. GunningHead

After Portsmouth went under, are we glad to have a problem like Arsenal? We can actually gloat a bit…should we win it this year, my God in heaven, i will love it…love it…love it, more than kevin Keagan did!

    ————————-
HERE HERE ! another good post in a short space of time ..

its got me baffled that the club can reduce
the debt as a priority when the club has been devoid of accolades for over the past 5 years ..

wheres these peoples fucking priorities !
    ??????????????????????????????????????????

it clearly isnt wenger who is stock piling cash!
this confirms my theory all along , that these fat wankers never gave a flying fuck about the football …

just remain competitive wenger whilst we wipe the board clean of cash !

looking back on the past 5 years , i cannot even think of how we were supposed to compete .
if wenger’s past 5 year plan was GOOD enough for you ?

because judging by the figure still outstanding id say we have another few years of it to go ..

  42. ethangunner

you hear about this shit and it just makes you fuckin wild !

We can clear 33% of your debt in record time but can only compete on 2 footballing fronts because of our squad size ….

i think people at this club need to start getting their priorities in order ..

and im sure this sort of information bods
well with half of the Arsenal fans ..

and people say they dont want some sugar daddy fat rich wanker to take over ?!

but are happy with rich fat wankers who dont put any money of their own into the club but take yours hand over fist !

  43. chozzer

Choy, I think Clichy is going to have some vaseline in his shorts pockets and he’ll smear it on the ball every time he takes a throw-in making it impossible to towel-dry.

    We’re ready for Delap alright.

  44. GunningHead

It’s absolutely laughable- the stupidity of some fans. The question is would you so-called trophy seekers like to be in Portsmouth’s position? They’ve actually won something- the FA Cup two years ago under ‘arry! At what expense? Football isn’t just about spending billions on players. It’s about a sustainable future for a club -not a glory hunt. Sometimes I just think some Arsenal fans are better supporting Chelski-Chitty!

A trophy without sound foundation is like an empty masturbation- you’ll have to clean up afterwards and it aint going to be pretty!

  45. ethangunner

    on reflection the heading

‘Anyway, we aren’t skint are we’

    is not accurate ,
because if we have officially paid off 130 mil or whatever .. then we must be close to skint NOW !…

as my mother used to say,
    you cant save it
    and spend it too !

i think the argument was always based on what are they spending our money on ?!

    i said repayments !
and people said oh no … the loan is
set over 17 years blah blah blah .. ..
    manageable payments etc..

    yeah right ..
i think the problem all along was WHERE is the MONEY GOING ?

not do we have any or not …

but technically if you are paying off this loan
that quickly … and every available cent seems to be utilized in reducing the deficit then technically now we must be skint ..

how can you compare US to pompey ? FFS !

    LOSER !

its actually more laughable some of the SO CALLED FANS WHO think this scenario is FINE !

talk about going from one extreme to the other .

also see what happens to pompey next season !!, they will probably be bought out by the end of the season by someone . NO DRAMAS

one way of another i bet you the pompey management doesnt put the club in 6 years of limbo ! directionless , for moneys sake ..

i would rather fuck up one season and learn from it .. as against lose the prestige this club HAD…

  47. limestonegunner

Gazidis and Wenger seem to think that we are competing for a special trophy, a corporate profit trophy, that it seems no one else in football has heard of. If we have money next season, it is clear that the club needs improvement and the money needs to be spent even if we somehow manage to win the league and go far in the CL.

  48. gnarleygeorge9

I see Pompy has gone into administration, & will be deducted 9 points. Its a bit sad really the state of things, which could spread.

Oh, well, so Stoke tonight is an absolute must 3 points. 1st thing is to “belt the crap out of Delap” Hey theres a tune for the away fans

  49. Rocky7

We could have a squillion pounds in the bank now , wenger still would not spend it on New players. Did we get paid by portmouth the full amount from the sale of diarra ???

no one would step in and buy the club now ,not this season , but im sure some arab somewhere is rubbing his hands for May 2010 to come about !

  51. cecsrule

wow..i love this site..and i love geoff comments..the Other sites keeps back on Arsenal financial plans rather than the respective aim of a football club which is winning trophies and titles. It is good to see us cutting our debt in a short period of time but sad to see that we didint buy any backup players during the january window to cover up our injury list spree. It is time wenger to hear out the fans..well 1000 heads are better than 1, right???

  52. ethangunner

    GG

Pompey was used like a 2 bit hooker .
all the players were sold off …
prior to selling to that Arab .
and it left them a championship team in the EPL ! ….

harry fucked them over also and left them for dead ! ! that didn’t help ..

Adams couldn’t change the direction from downward spiral to sunk .. & GAME OVER ….

but how people can compare us spending a bit of money on much needed players to insinuate that fans want Arsenal to spend beyond there means is stupid talk .compare us to pompey ? what a joke !.

and shows a real lack of brain matter .

this club hasn’t had a transfer kitty for over 6 years that im aware of …

we sold off players just about every season, prior to purchasing … and see where its got us !
    we were cashed up !
but we know where that money went !
(into debt repayment) = which only directly helps the board /share holders .

Also ,if i was in the team id be looking over my shoulder to see who Arsene is cashing in on next season !

then you wonder why this team has a low morale .

would you like to work in an office where people are getting constantly moved on ! or getting sacked … poached to other companies
to make your competition better,AND YOU WORSE ! whilst slitting your throat at the same time ..

once this team gets settled and wenger stops selling the most important personnel off our roster each season , things might improve !

if anything… pompey, if bought out , will be back on the straight and narrow long before this rot inside our club subsides .

  53. luke

I like Wenger’s financial and youth policy to some extent it just needs some more balance. Im not asking for fucking Christiano Ronaldo but more vermaelen esque additions.

You lot are getting dissed over at Untold Arsenal. Why don’t you round up a posse of disenchanted gooners and go over to Untold Arsenal and beat them up? They think you’re a bunch of paranoid simpletons. If you let them get away with it, pretty soon every one will think that too.

i dont give a flying fuck what any arsenal fan says who doesnt agree with me :)

its pretty fucking clear we have been treading water for 5 years and anyone who cant see it needs CT scan of their brain !

our management would rather knock off a substantial amount of club debt , yet retain Almunia in goal in this vital half of the season
poor , greedy decision making by our leaders again this term ….

oh thats right 3rd is like winning a cup and i only buy players if they better the team !

wonder where he has been sourcing his goal keepers in the past then if almunia is the best he’s seen ?

hmmmmmm, he sort of was correct really! ..
    it wasn’t a transitional phase ..
it was a permanent down grade !

  61. Maurya

Did Wenger belittle Carling cup again today. Why the heck Villa manager criticize Wenger when he is playing with Manu.

  62. ethangunner

there is certain characteristics that dont make sense about wenger , thats why i believe it really isnt him NOT spending money , its more like the board would rather do other administrative things with it , than spend it on players …

i thought seaman was a bit shit towards the end ,
and wenger acted quickly , same with lens .

but almunia .. well , i was calling for a better keeper pre – season so its not like it
hasnt been on the cards for a while ..

how can wenger buy players when the ade and toure money obviously disappeared into the black hole which has been recently revealed as
    DEBT REPAYMENTS ..

  63. luke

3-4 additions and we are fecking golden too.

    or something like that

  64. 8 inch knob

I agree with Gooner All Day Long. Balotelli and Lukaku would be ideal for us.

We need to get rid of the shit in our squad.

    Sell Almunia
    Sell Fabianski
Allow Silvestre to leave on a free
    Sell Senderos
    Sell Clichy
    Sell Eduardo

Irregardless of whether Fabregas stays or leaves we still need a Left Centre Back, possibly a keeper if Wenger believes Szczęsny or Mannone are still too raw (I personally don’t think so) and a tall stiker to compete with Bendtner.

    Buy Goalie: Lloris or Akinfeev
Buy Left Central Defender: Sakho or Chiellini
    Buy Striker: Balotelli or Lukaku.

  65. Rohan

Chelsea still have to face Villa, United Liverpool and Tottenham and City today. If they don’t lose atleast 6 points there, they deserved to be champions.
As for United if they don’t lose atleast 5 points between now and the end I’ll eat my proverbial hat.
All we need to do is go on an unbeaten run drawing one at most. Can we do it??
Yes we can!!! Comon you Arsenal.
Stand up for the Champions. It all starts today with Stoke.

how can wenger buy players when the ade and toure money obviously disappeared into the black hole which has been recently revealed as DEBT REPAYMENTS ..

Obviously that money did not… Only the money received from sale of flats went towards loan. It has been pointed out here here earlier, money from sale of players went towards, buying players (16 year olds?), increase in wages and balance is safe in bank.

Arsenal have announced pre-tax profits of £35.2 million and a significant reduction in debt for the six months ending November 30, 2009.

The financial half-year results reveal Arsenal Holdings plc’s total net debt has been reduced from £332.8 million to £203.6million – a reduction of £129.2 million. This has been attributed to, in no small way, the significant bar tab that Geoff managed to rack up during the period up in the expensive seats. The Club looks forward to acommodating any questions he wishes to have answered @ the next AGM.

IMHO, England arguably is in its best postion to win the World Cup since 1990, but @ the 11th hour, certain fuck-whits are going to ruin it, again. What an absolute tonsil that Terry must be? Made Captain for a reason, but showed he is a jelly back.

Anyway, as one of the other 31 teams, this is all good news, but I do have a soft spot for England.

Morning Men. I simply don’t get all the negative waves over playing this Stoke lot. Forget the Cup game, we will thump them. On a slight downer, I don’t give City a cat in hell’s at the bridge, although I’m sure Chavs will drop points, only it will be in the away games.
Surely we should start with Rosicky, and Eboue.
