I watched the Stuttgart vs Barca game last night and quite enjoyed it, even though it was 1-1, Stuttgart were great in the first half, in fact as good as they were, Barca were bad, the second half started with the withdrawal of defensive midfielder YaYa Toure, one that has often been wanted by some well known Grovers. Henry came on and they were a different team. Although past it and committing strange deeds, I did find myself missing mad Jens as well, I also found myself missing Hleb and Henry, still Hleb and Henry wanted to leave and Wenger never keeps people that want to leave, it will be interesting to see what happens if Cesc wants out this summer!
Anyway, Barca proved something I’ve been saying all season, why do we need a DM? even a great one? Barca showed us last night that you don’t.
Dutch Frank won Barca the ECL and La Liga, then they changed managers to Pep Guardiola and he won the treble and looks good to repeat it, his record is won 70%, so it goes to show, if the set up is right and you buy great players or great prospects, then it doesn’t matter who manages you, I mean who was Guardiola before Barca?
Not that it matters with us, because we don’t win anything anyway. Still with the Mancs winning last night, we really do need to beat Stoke at the weekend, so it will be interesting to see what happens. I think every game now is a must win game, so good luck the boys.
I got my renewal through for my tickets, I’m still not sure whether or not I want to keep contributing to this crazy obsession for youth, so if there are any real fans out there, not plastics, real fans that want two tickets for next season, I am prepared to let you rent them off me for that season, to see if you feel the same after coughing up a shed load of dosh to watch the academy. £5,200 for two, but bear in mind that includes a free beer and a programme. As you know, Jens Lehmann was signed by Arsenal for £1.2 million and became an Invincible and got them to the 2006 final in Paris, where he was sent off. He was the best keeper in the Champions League that year. And he was the best keeper in the World Cup too. And he reached the final of Euro 2008 with Germany before losing to a goal that Fernando Torres lobbed over him from a Xavi pass. He is 40 now and his career ends in May. He was very good at Arsenal and will not be forgotten.

The if is – if the midfield play as a unit and track back and are both offensively and defensively aware.
Busquets is a player that does “SIT” in footballing terms – but not in the way Denilson tries to SIT. He literally SITS (whilst standing!!) and does not move quick enough to keep up with play.

Bendtner is good and will prove to be a top player but needs more maturity in his play, watching Zlatan last night I saw Bendtner in him but beleive Bendtner can be as good at Zlatans age.

Geoff mate, I think more people would be interested in a single season ticket ranging from 1200 to 1800 and not two club level ones for almost 6 grand. But I understand what you are trying to say and that is what you pay so you are entitled to say what you want, and some people come on and tell you how lucky you are. I as you would not consider myself lucky paying 6 grand a year to watch those kids.

Morning all – you’re right there Geoff, I wish the players would say they want to their best for the fans sometimes; the fact it’s usually the manager they want to do well for points towards how much some players see Arsenal as not being a club for the fans.
In the past players used to say “We owe the fans for sticking by us” or “That goal was for the fans – they deserve it”. I’m not saying none of our players give a toss about the fans, just less of them than they used to.
I think NB has all the attributes to be a great CF – but watching him last weekend against Sunderland he doesn’t stay central.
My season ticket is right on the half way line block 17 – and he spent a lot of the game in front of me!

Club level is so expensive for what it is. I pay £1100 for my ticket and it’s right on the half way line – very good seat.

Khalle, the fans pay his wages(by paying to see the matches and buy the merchandise) and the fans are the club. We were here before Wenger and will be after he’s gone. Players denigrate the position fans hold in the clubs history at their peril.
To be fair Geoff, a lot of my friends are renting there tickets out at the minute and will be looking to do the same next season.
The 40,000 waiting list is all well and good but like you say how many will actually take the option up or can afford to if given the opportunity to get a ticket.

plus most spanish teams dont have a physical side which is what we’ve struggled with. also the smaller teams over there dont get a look in against the big boys where as over here teams like stoke, bolton, sunderland, hull can cause upsets and nick points of teams like us

Hleb and I thought did well, but his teammates were not on his wavelength – now I am sure he appreciates how good he had it at Arsenal with all the movement.
Jens was good and bad.
Chamakh also showed that he can be very good. Away at Olympiakos is never an easy fixture, so I think he did well to get into the game. Not a great deal of service to him though.

Yes what was that all about? came sprinting in from about 10 yards away from the side and just launched himself into the air, studs first, and dropped right in front of Puyol. Puyol gave him this funny look, like calm down mate, you are crazy. Could have been a booking, and would have been a sending off if he had actually gone through Puyol.
Morning all. Season tickets have their uses, but also major downside. Geoff highlighted my feelings exactly when he talked about sitting next to someone smelling of brown paper! That’s the point. You fork out whatever, and find every game is ruined by some asshole sitting right behind you. And there are many of them. You can pretty much always get a ticket anyhow. First time I ever failed, was fairly recently, and even then the following day Pedro pointed out that there were one or two on offer here. People talk about atmosphere in the pub. Well, my last season ticket was standing Old North Bank. I have since sat everywhere. From directors box and private box (Highbury) as well as in every part of the ground. Nothing compares to standing at Highbury. If I lived nearer London now, I’m not sure whether I would get one or not. If so, then around £1200, gets you front few rows upper tier, and the view is very good.

Saying you don’t need a DM in the team because Barca don’t is like saying you don’t need to be handsome to get an attractive wife because…just look at Berni Ecclestone.
Just look at their team. Our best player would struggle to get into their first XI. Now, if we were to have players of the quality of Ibrahimovic (he trialed with us), Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Busquets (compare him to Denilson). All the money in the world couldn’t put that team together in North London.
If you are Mike Tyson you can afford not to have a good defence, but if you are the current Arsenal squad, with a joker in goal, two erratic central defenders a wing back dangerously out of form and another just out of form, then you need all the defensive help you can get. Or, better, a defensive midfielder who can push forward at speed and help kick start counter attacks while shielding the playmaker…oh, I miss seeing Vieira in the tunnel all vaselined up before the game

I reckon the club are going to have problems getting rid of the corporate level tickets, and I think I’m right in saying that accounts for around half (I may be wrong) of match day takings. I am not sure that the signing of a Chamakh will be enough in terms of the glamour. My hope is that the American gets control, and realizes that for more than just footballing reasons, we need one or two big name signings.

Having a DM lump with no talent other than getting in the way stops a talented player being in there.
For instance I would sooner we persevered with Ramsey than played Denilson.
This defensive midfielder bit only really started when we bought Gilberto, before that we just had midfielders.
Petit and Vieira were midfielders, when one attacked, the other defended.
Before that we had sweepers, like O’Leary.

As I stated during the transfer window it was a choice, most certainly not a case of not being able to find a good striker. These infuriating comments only go to show that faith is based on financial decisions rather than quality. We have no other strikers available so we must put our faith in them to score. Paddy’s ability to defend, win a great tackle and then turn that into an attack himself was immense. The pace at which those long legs travelled was incredible, and with the ball under control…
Geoff – yes, neither Petit or Vieira was a traditional DM as such. Wenger really got it spot on with that pairing – they worked so well in tandem, taking attack and defence in turn.

Steve Bruce said in his post-match interview on Saturday that Sunderland lost out to sign Chamakh and he will be a success at Arsenal.
Also, last night on SSN Ian Dowie who was watching Bordeaux game in the studio, said after the game that Chamakh had a good game and he will be a great addition to the current Arsenal team.

Playing wingers who do not know how to cross. And playing forward who can not dominate in the air or head the ball, is like playing Handicapped football.
People are getting ahead in terms of assuming Arsenal to go though next round. If Porto scores a goal we need 3 goals to go though next round. It is not that difficult for us to concede a goal. We are not scoring that many goals as of now.

I do not watch full games. But i think, all of us are assume that we play short passing fast football. But i never see us taking the ball behind the defenders by short passing it. We always short pass it to by line to the corners. Basically we end up short passing in front of most of opposition players. We no longer pass the ball into channels or spaces. We don’t have some one like Ljungberg who runs into those channels. I am not sure if we create any space to any one by keep passing the ball.
We still dependent on individual skill of Arshavin or Fab to score goals. I still think that, some one like Ebou takes the ball behind defenders better rather than our passing.
Fast passing game really works well when we are doing counter with less numbers in the opposition. It does work for every one. What is the special with Arsenal short passing. May be short passing fast paced football is the toughest one to play. And we are still learning it.
in the next round i’d like us to get bordeaux or sevilla. i would not mind bayern or fiorentina.

He might have hit some sort of form but all I’ve seen him do all season is go wide and either pass it back or deliver a nothing cross, basically what Sagna does. Having some one who can pass the ball or cross ball helps a lot. In case of Valencia, it is just a matter of time people will stop him crossing. Those in the box, keep a eye on aerial balls when ball is with Valencia. It is like when ball is with Gael Clichy. Why would some one in the box worry about aerial threat when ball is with Clichy. That unpredictability is missing. Crossing and heading is awesome skill one can not miss in football.
the truth is when teams choke the middle you have to go wide that is why we struggle against well organised teams. Even Stoke have better wide play than ourselves

It’s not just Man U and Chelsea getting weaker I really do think Everton, Villa and the likes have gotten stronger. Besides the usual few neither have slipped up against bottom half opposition. As for not having a traditional winger, in the next few years you’ll see the demise of the traditional winger to be replaced by either a wide striker or a CM playing as a wideman. Wingers have gotten easier to play against. It wouldn’t hurt to be ahead of the curve again.

Yep we haven’t, wingers stop the fluidity of the game that Wenger adores, but they’ve gotten redundant for most teams now, a good athletic full-back always controls the winger. Strikers and CMs are much harder to mark and cause problems.
good point choy we have always played with unnatural wingers. Ljunberg and Pires did blend in well but since then the goals and assists from wide has been lacking

Though we are just 2 points from Manu, it is always like that. We are not that far from winning league for last 2 years in terms of difference in points.

I am also worried about our recent performances with Manu and other big teams. We were not that bad few years back when we had lot of new players. When Fab and Flamini in his teans, i remember us passing the ball in midfield with 4-5-1 till the death. We used to nick with a goal or two by creating some tight channels. We did that in Theater when they won the league. We did that to few big teams in the Eupore. We used to create those awesome triangles in the midfield. Paul Scholes chased for the ball around those triangles like a mug for 90min. Where did those awesome triangles gone.
May be we are evolving as a team. But we never evolved into something meaningful.

Sorry to break it to you Sabeel but the Premier league is a competition and in a competition your competency is judged against others’. Even if we had a 92 point season and Chelsea had a repeat of their 95 point season we’d have been better of than us but worse off than Chelsea, hence ended up with nothing. You cannot isolate Arsenal from the league, we’ve endured the same teams and we’re on nearly level terms with them so yeah I think we’ll do well to stay in the mix till May.

you can survive without proper wingers if you have good full backs like when we had cashley. its not like he scored a lot or created a lot but he had a good understanding with the attacking players mainly henry and pires and we tore teams apart from the left flank

Nasri seriously needs to up his input. He rarely goes past players, just passes back to clichy after going in a small circle with the ball. He doesnt get involved with play that often either and thats a big worry. A player of his ability should be demanding the ball instead of waiting for it.

The way to stop delap is to spend the entire game in Stoke’s half, and not give them throws when in those positions, just hoof it centrally, or backwards for a corner! We just need to attack Stoke, although the kids ended up losing 3-1, they were well in it for most of the game, and pulled stoke all over the place, our first team should be able to do the same, but to a greater extent, and score goals as a result, especially as Stoke should be tired!

Obviously the whole team werent kids Jaguar but it was a mostly back up team. Only 1 starter (Cesc). Dont take everything so literally.
“and the likes” Jaguar?! Cesc was the only player to retain his place, and that was just because of an illness to the player who was meant to be playing there! Silvestre counts as a kid in my eyes because he’s at the same level as the kids, just on the way down rather than the way up! It was kids, players coming back from injuries, and Cesc, and we did well against them for most of the game.
Ordinarily I’d say whatever happens it would be tight, but as they will have had just one day to prepare for us, and will be very tired, whereas we’ve had a week’s rest and preparation, there’s a chance that if we get an earlyish goal we could give them a bit of a spanking.
Though it could well still be a very tight game. I’d be happy with a 1-0 deflected goal!
