AL WE MISS YOU! / Wenger heaps pressure on himself by throwing the cup

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So the team lined up as well as could have been expected. We rested a few that were in need… Arshavin because of his foot, Eduardo because he’s played a lot lately and Rosicky because he has the genetic build quality of an MFI kitchen set.

We started off in spectacularly poor fashion. After 70 seconds, Delap launched one of his world renowned super throws into the box, Fabianski dithered, Ricardo fuller stooped to head in. Well played Fabianski, I guess we’re a little more aware of why Wenger favours Almunia, a shameful situation really .

It didn’t get much better for Arsenal, our play was interrupted with poor passing and an a lack of understanding between players. The team looked like they’d never played with each other. Stoke didn’t really create anything, but Arsenal were failing to capitalise on the space they were being generously afforded.

Sol Campbell looked steady dealing with aerial threat, Eastmond also following his lead with some good defending.

Carlos Vela was having a nightmare, as were Traore and Coquelin. When 30%+ of the team is under performing, you know you’re in for a tough day.

Just as it looked like we were heading into half time a goal down, we won a freekick after a Cesc flick was handled. The crap hacks tried to find a way of making the refs decision look weak, sadly, they couldn’t.

‘It was ball to hand’

Super logic. So can someone tell me a situation where a hand ball isn’t ball to hand? Muppets…

Cesc stepped up to the freekick, played it to his right where Frank Denilson was on hand to bobble the ball into the net! Super, we were back in the game! Denilson seems to be demonstrating the benefits of shooting… you’ve got to be in it to win it.

Fabianski picked up where he left off in the second half, flapping needlessly at the high balls. This wasn’t the Fabianski I was expecting. Catch it son… that’s why you’ve got a £100 pair of sticky keepers gloves on your hands.

It was interesting to notice that no one was passing to Theo. Coincidence or intelligent play?

Jet began to improve with the game, heading off on some meandering runs and making some good passes.

Fabianski was sustaining one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from an Arsenal keeper. He let an Etherington cross slip under his hands. Lucky Stoke hadn’t committed anyone forward.

Wenger had seen enough, he brought on Rambo, Arshavin and Eduardo on for Coquelin, Theo, and Thomas. The latter two had been particularly poor. It was quite amusing that Arshavin forgot to take his hat off, Wenger stepped in to avoid further embarrassment… he has endearing child like qualities.

Silvestre made the tackle of the match after Delap sprung the offside trap, making up the ground superbly to stop the shot. Traore was guilty of a criminal lapse in concentration again. Games like these show we take some of the first teamers for granted….

Vela found himself one on one with the keeper but couldn’t pull the trigger in time. I couldn’t help but think he was trying to do something clever instead of unleashing a shot…

Sidibie broke down the wing, chipped a cross in and Fuller obliged by nodding it in. Where was Traore? How badly was Denilsons lack of pace exposed? Were Arsenal staring down the barrel of an embarrassing defeat?

Carlos Vela cut a cross back to Rambo who blazed over, at 84 minutes, things were looking desperate.

Stoke brought on Franny Jeffers, within a minute, Eastmond was hussled off the ball, Etherington crossed, Stoke punished us again.

3-1it finished and the experiment to rest players had failed.

I’m not happy about forfeiting the FA Cup. However, I think it’s as much down to the players as Wenger’s selection. On paper, I thought the team looked good enough to beat Stoke, I’m annoyed at the men on show. Where was Theo today… Mr £60k p/w? How poor was Denilson? Had Fabianski ever played football before? It’s also worth noting that Wenger brought the big guns on and that’s when the result turned for the worse… perhaps he should have brought them on earlier.

There were some really negative performances out there and a distinct lack of hunger from certain member of the starting 11.

The big question I have is how will this affect destiny month? If it doesn’t go well, Wenger has brought the criticism on himself. Chelsea didn’t rest a many key players. Lampard and Terry are into their thirties and managed to make it for the cup. I understand the logic of the decision, I really do… however, logic doesn’t take psychology into account and logic has screwed our season in the same way before. The FA cup is an irritance nowadays and I just wonder whether we’ll ever start the season with a team capable of competing on 3 fronts (The Carling Cup has already disappeared). I love the FA Cup, so do most fans. It’s such a shame the Wenger doesn’t anymore.

On the positive side of things, Sol looked really fit and he played very well. I thought bar the mistake, Eastmond performed in a spirited fashion. We didn’t pick up any further injuries and Wenger took the heat for the result. Other than that, I don’t really have many nice things to say. 2 shots on goal tells a story doesn’t it? I just wonder why Wenger has to wait for problems before he reacts? Why not be proactive and address the glaringly obvious… we’re short on quality outside of the first 15. Two players would do it… I doubt there are many out there who’d disagree. Killing a player seems to be a bigger worry than killing trophy hopes, that ain’t right…

So, next up, Villa. This is when spirit and character truly come into play. This is the month that tells us how far we’ve come as a squad, a month that will define the success of our season and a month that will tell us whether is was a good idea or not to throw the cup…

‘Judge me in May’

We will, I hope it’s a positive assessment and you were right, because that trophy cupboard doesn’t suit being dusty.

Ratings

Fabianski: The worst performance I’ve ever seen an Arsenal keeper have. 2

Traore: Caught out of position time and time again. Some terrible defending and he was at fault for Stokes 2nd for being out of position. 4

Campbell: A very impressive first game back. He struggled with fitness in the second half, but he seemed to be doing double the work load with Silvestre struggling. Looks like a good signing. 7

Silvestre: Struggled for pace and got caught out a few times. He got worse after he injured his shoulder, not a great game. 6

Coquelin: Terrible performance from the Frenchman. Poor passing, bad positional play… very weak from a player with a lot of potential. 5

Cesc: What was he to do playing with under performers? You can have the best conductor in the world, if you’ve got crap musicians, you’re not going to make beautiful music. Today Cesc was conducting the Spice girls. 6.5

Denilson: He scored a goal, magic. Other than that, he wasn’t really in the game. His passing was poor, his physical weakness was exposed and his lack of pace cost us a goal. 5

Eastmond: Dealt well with high balls and passed nicely. Cost us the final goal, however, on another day, the ref would have blown for a freekick. 7

JET: Wasn’t really involved during the first half with his game or his effort levels. The second half saw an improvement and a justified substitution. 6

Walcott: Proof that money doesn’t buy you quality. Sorry, that was harsh and I know he could come good and probably will. ROI isn’t looking impressive at the moment though, is it? Football is about the now… sadly the future doesn’t give you performances now. I’m getting bored of talking about his potential… how about a few decent games instead? £60k a week isn’t a potential salary is it… it’s a superstar salary. 4

Vela: Much more involved in the game compared to Theo. Did very little with his posession bar whinge a lot when he was fouled. Guilty of trying to be a smart arse when we could have equalised. He’ll be regretting that miss tomorrow. 6

Referee: Not a bad game, made all the right decisions and let the game flow quite well. Clearly wasn’t adding the time it took Delap to shine the ball to the clock. 8

There wont be much time to procrastinate on this result, the games will come thick and fast from now on. The good news is Geoff’s lucky ugg botts have been binned… it was the boots fault, blame Geoff for the loss!

  1. BigRaddy

El Tel. One of the best times at Highbury was seeing Cantona sent off for jumoing into Nige. The place went mental!!

    Anyway…. sayonara,

  2. El Tel

    G’Night Johan/David.

I reckon we will end up with the Morrocan. Like AA23 last year he will give them what they want in the end. Fucking silly really as he could already be acclimatised to our play by now.

  3. El Tel

    David,

Robinho could be disruptive like Ade was. Wouldn’t come cheap either.

The Morrocan lad for 5 mill the Palace boy for 3 mill and a DM I reckon.

    Oh and Buffon.

  4. David

I think there is also the concern about playing time A,

He would definitely get that at Arsenal

The problem as always is the money.

  5. A

Chamakh is going nowhere unfortunately El Tel. I’d be surprised if Moses talk is true, I really don’t see anything there that shows he could EVER make it at a top club, let alone anytime soon. I reckon it’s his agent playing silly buggers to get interest in him, with Palace desperate to flog him. He’ll probably end up at Notts Forest, West Brom, or Wigan

  6. A

Yeah I agree David, (though not sure he’d get it with us any more than with city) but City are only letting him go on loan because he wants to go to Brazil, no way they’d let us loan him, and I wouldn’t want him permanently

  7. luke

Fuck Robinho. What a brat. He should go to Italy or back to Spain. EPL is too tough for him. We already have arshavin who gets outmuscled, we need another Bendtner/RVP esque player, not another small/skillful dribbler.

  8. luke

and speaking of signings, look like were not making any…although the piece arsenal.com ran today about gallas being on the verge of injury makes me think were in for that fulham defender. At the same time that makes no sense at all with the Sol signing, but its Wenger here so I may as well shut up. IMO, we are short a midfielder if anything. I like Cesc and Song starting, but I think if our midfield was something like Cesc-Song-Toulalan/De rossi/Mascherano, then we would be a force to reckon with. Such a f%$&ing shame RVP is out. Damn you Cheilini

  9. A

luke the piece arse.com ran today has absolutely nothing to do with the management, it’s the web team who decides upon and writes articles, totally independent from Wenger or anyone who makes decisions on the footballing side of things!

Apart from official statements Arse.com get no more insider knowledge than any blog, or tabloid, all their information comes from press conferences and interviews, and all their articles are written based on things said in those interviews and press conferences, and what articles are run is decided by the web team.

  10. YON

I think a Fabregas-Song-Diaby trio is probably the best we can get. No other player who could come into this 3 (except Y. Toure) could offer the physicality, forward drive and defensive cover. I would like Iniesta but he doesn’t have the physical presence of Diaby. Cesc is probably more attacking than Xavi so I would have him… and a lot younger.

My concern (since RVP got injured) is our lack of goals from the front 3. Our midfield is being expected to not only defend and stabilize the team but also find goals. That is dangerous because in tight games the midfield has to come further up in search and that is why we over-expose ourselves at times.

  11. A

I dunno about the lack of goals from the front three YON

Since VP got injured out goalscorers have been –

    Arshavin, Ramsey

    OG, Arshavin

    Cesc

    Denilson, Eduardo, Diaby

    Cesc (2), Diaby

    Eduardo, Nasri, Ramsey, Song

    Ramsey, Eduardo

    Denilson, Rosicky

    Cesc, Merida

    Rosicky, Cesc, Vermy, Arshavin

There’s only been 3 games where one of the front three havn’t scored

  12. ethangunner

    A

    preposterous !
of course the Internet is an extension to the fans from a management perspective …

this marvelous thing called the internet is a valid marketing tool !
and all levels of the club right up to wenger and beyond would use it as a vehicle from time to time .
anything from merchandising pushes offering discounts to NEW STORY EXCLUSIVES and live video feeds .
on line shops etc .. it all is DIRECTLY connected to the club and management . and the official News section is the clubs bench mark in MAKING THINGS OFFICIAL .Of course they would get exclusivity..

like the pre – season nasri story to DM ..
ok he he smashed his leg up after that but
it was a shrewd way of telling people he wont BUY a new DM ..

wenger used it as a conduit to the people , a way to spread the message .. THE EXCLUSIVE ..

    EXCLUSIVE to A.com ..

you might have some mild knowledge of writing on 2 bit web sites in the past A , but trust me ALL BUSINESSES use there web pages to measure .

  13. ethangunner

    to GOOD measure :)

ive been in upper management before .
i know how it ticks ..
i only know about the architectural side of business
but ive seen many a sales manager in my time ..
and ive seen every underhanded way to cut a penny spent . if they so obviously abused the A.com web page it would be viewed as propaganda , i view it that way :)

but i only view it that way because i consider there to be some issues management wise at club level .
where as OTHERS CLEARLY THINK EVERYTHING IS FINE ….

    A :)

  14. ethangunner

A why do you spend so much time disagreeing with everyone :) ?

the enemy is the 19 other teams in the EPL ..
i dont think your on the same page as me on any topic other than we would both want Arsenal to finish top of the EPL table ..

hopefully we can agree on that !

  15. ethangunner

i mean what other paper would get this exclusive with vito ?!

done in question – answer format ..
its a form of making vito more human and therefore the fans will love him ..

in short club propaganda for the extremist ..

(i gotta say its working for me , i had to read it too :) )

but the point im making is …
‘it’s the web team who decides upon and writes articles, totally independent from Wenger or anyone who makes decisions on the footballing side of things!’

is clearly false , Im sure ‘THE CLUB’ cleared the exclusive with the columnist of the blog prior .

    ————————————————-
Young Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone has signed a new long-term contract.

Shortly after putting pen to paper, the 21-year-old spoke to Arsenal.com about his ‘breakthrough’ season and his future at Emirates Stadium.

Vito, how are you feeling about committing your future to Arsenal?

“It’s a great day for me, a great moment. I’m really happy to be staying at Arsenal Football Club and will give everything to repay the Club for the faith they have shown in me.”

There were rumours of a number of Italian clubs interested in you, but was it always Arsenal for you?

“Yes, it was always Arsenal. I’m delighted to be staying here because it was always my plan when I was really young to come to England and make it here at Arsenal, which is one of the biggest clubs in the world. Now I want to try and become the number one goalkeeper here, and help the team win trophies.”

You’ve been here over four years now. How have you progressed as player and as a man?

“I have progressed a lot since coming here. I’ve been here for a lot of my growing life so yes, I have improved as a man and as a player. I’ve learned a lot from my experiences at Arsenal and am happy to have the chance to grow more and more.”

You’ve made a big breakthrough this season, you’ve played well in the first-team. What have been the highlights for you?

“Each game has been great for me. My run of games in the first team was great because the team never lost. So that was a good achievement and now I have the chance to show the fans, the Club, the players and everyone that I can do the same as I already have in my nine first-team appearances so far.”

What are now your short-term aims?

“Every day when I go on the training pitch I try to show everyone that I’m the best. It’s normal – every goalkeeper does that. I’m not working for nothing, I’m working to achieve something. I know I have time on my side and am very young, so it’s good for me that Arsenal and the manager believe in me. I will try to become the number one as soon as possible.”

What’s the latest with the Italian Under-21s, and do you think this has improved you?

“In March, we have a qualifying match for the European Championships, against Hungary, and we need to win so it’s a very important game. I hope to be able to help the team and show on an international pitch that I can play. Being around the national setup is different, but you can show what you have taken from England and Arsenal and demonstrate all that you have learned in training and matches.”

  16. A

    ethan

The answers in the press conferences could be contrued as marketing, you could infer things from comments about Nasri etc (although in that case, Nasri was NEVER going to be a DM, and his comments about Nasri had NOTHING to do with our likelihood of signing one) but not the articles on Arse.com

News articles on Arse.com are totally independent from the management. All they are are the exact same soundbites that all the media outlets get, and stories made out of the quotes, that’s it.

They have no more contact with, nor info from, Wenger, nor anyone else close to things.

I don’t have knowledge of writing on two bit websites, I have knowledge working for one of the newspapers, and sitting next to members of clubs’ web team in press conferences.

I don’t like what’s happened with Arse.com, it used to be just factual information, but it’s succumbed to the pop culture, it runs stories now identical to those in the tabloids. It takes small soundbites, and created sensationalist stories from it, twisting Wenger’s words from the press conference to make out he meant something different, or more than he actually did. The website is now barely more reliable when reporting press conferences and interviews than tabloids.

  17. A

yeah ethan there are exclusive interviews, with players, you can see them all on the website. There are also “exclusive” interviews with Wenger, at the same time as the press conferences come out, although all he says is exactly the same as he does in the press conferences!

My point is that Arse.com gets its information EXACTLY the same way that every other media outlet do. Either through press conferences, or interviews. It’s information from the other side of a microphone, Wenger is no more open with the web team than he is with the media in press conferences or interviews he does with them, and no more involved with what they print.

  18. A

Arse.com have ZERO insider knowledge that the rest of the press have, and ZERO input from the club in terms of printing articles for some sort of agenda. That’s my point, all Arse.com is is a web team no different from a tabloid’s web team, or skysports.com journalists.

Just a few people who watch Wenger’s press conferences, or interviews, and choose what stories to make out of the soundbites and quotes they think sound interesting. They decide to interpret the soundbites in whichever way they feel like, to tell a story, and exagerate and sensationalise, mis-interpretting, in exactly the same way that tabloids and such like do.

  19. A

Maybe that’s why we came in for him at a weird time Pat – because there was/is other interest so it was a case of acting now or missing out? Where did you see that they’re in for him?

Surely he’d rather stay in London….

  20. ethangunner

the webpage is out sourced to NTT web hosting , but they act on Arsenals behalf and run the on line shop ,
im sure THE HEAD OFFICE SEND THEM NEWS HEADLINES .

therefore the Club still use it as a conduit to the people ..

thats the attraction A .. as yes im sure they post the EXCLUSIVE 1st !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. ethangunner

they can hardly claim its an EXCLUSIVE if EVERYONE has it …

    whats Exclusive about that ?

A.com release all there news in one hit , then similar stories surface after… if you had ever bothered to look in Newsnow.com ..

  22. Pat

iceman, there is no way. Today, Monday, he played 120 minutes (I’m assuming) and expecting him to come back and play away to Villa 2 days later is crazy.

Jet lag, fatigue, lack of training. I’d be really surprised if he made the bench.

I’m gutted that we’ll miss him and DIaby against Villa. That will be our hardest game imo, and the one where we will play the worst.

  23. iceman

Yes, will be one of the hardest…

I’m expecting Rosicky to turn up the bite in midfield…and Arshavin…he’s been too quiet lately…Eduardo’s gonna explode soon…I can feel it…I hope :)

  24. Ray in SF

iceman I’m with you on Eduardo, just a goal or two away from turning on the floodgates, and I like the bite (and the flair) that Rosicky adds

Still enjoying the first goal against Bolton, came from nowhere and really changed the game.

  25. iceman

    Yeah Ray…

But it’s just this was his chance to really step up…
    Ade out, RvP/ Bendtner injured…

    He hasn’t really…

But hopefully only a matter of time…

  26. ethangunner

iceman I’m with you on Eduardo, just a goal or two away from turning on the floodgates,
    ——————–
we have been waiting since august ..
patience is a virtue ( in religion)
in football its an eternity .

great support striker , he will chip in …. eventually ..
but we need a prolific goal scorer , and if we get one dudu must get pushed further back down the line …
    one would think …

so he needs to star preforming .. NOW like … in dec 09 :) yesterday …

  27. Pat

Didn’t Dudu and bendtner have a pretty good understanding?

I cannot wait for Nik to get back. He’ll give us something we haven’t had this season, that is, if Wenger plays him at CF.

    Arshavin Bendtner Rosicky
    Diaby Song Cesc
    Clichy Verm Gallas Sagna
    Al

  28. Pat

Getting a win against Villa will be harder than Chelsea, United, and LPool.

We depend on controlling games, with the midfield, obviously. With Diaby and Song gone we’ll struggle.

Both were absolutely superb against Villa at the Emirates and we would have won without Cesc imo. It was coming.

  29. LAzer

Horrid team selection the other day…I had said I would not begrudge Wenger if he rested a few but I think he went over the top. The FA cup is an important trophy, to me it always has had a certain amount of prestige. There used to be a time in England when players would prefer to win that over the league, I don’t think he should have devauled it to this point.

Anyways am over the frustration, lets see if we lost momentum now or the rested players come back and perform for their under fire manager.

  30. ethangunner

    A

    of course A.com isn’t independent .
they are hand fed exclusives – interviews, and is the 1st official place of declarations of signings , contract extensions , a place to buy merchandise ..

oh yes Arsenal management dont benefit ..when
they write precisely what they want to write and be aired on line for the world to see .

Oh PLEASE ! what planet do you come from ????

Do you hear that beeping sound ?

i hear them calling you to return :) ….

  31. ethangunner

if arsenal propaganda had a mouth piece short of it being Wenger himself , it would be arsenal .com ..

when hill wood was pissed off ade – cesc being flirted with .. All these stories were 1st aired on A.com ..

its a propaganda tool pure and simple right down to Arsenal tv online ….

  32. iceman

I can’t believe we flogged barn door and haven’t replaced him.

Fine, so far, so good but come one Wenger!!! Loosen the wallet mate!!

We could have used a strong CF against Villa.

  33. ethangunner

you know ice man ive been banging on about a new striker when no other fucker within KOOO WEEEEEE
thought it was an issue , and now ive given up thinking its an issue , 2.5 years later after 1st screaming about ade , and we still havent got a clinical striker .

the war of attrition has worn me down .

i thought once people started coming in line with my way of thinking it was in the bag !

    sadly not ..

he wont buy with dudu – RVP – vela – theo NIK B .
    and AA ….

he would have to sell on 2 i think if he bought someone shortly …

i dont agree with it !, but you ,like I, know how wengers mind ticks over.$

  34. ethangunner

if he can try and make eboue – song – denilson and diaby come good , he will think dudu – nik b – vela and even theo will come good shortly … A CERTAINTY ..

    ho hum,

stuck with mediocre players with no visible time line clearly showing how much longer this youth project will take to get to the level wenger need to be at .

yes we are visibly closer this season but then so are A LOT of other teams getting closer …

  35. nishanth

Will be a super tough game tomorrow.A win will be terrific.Midfield selection will be really interesting.Hope eastmond plays instead of denilson

  36. iceman

    Ethan..

    Great minds ;)

If only we could scream this to Wenger somehow.

I think this summer will be one of change…I really believe he will flog some…not his favourites…but Vela, Silvestre for sure…

  37. LAzer

    lineups?

    AW’s imo:

    Al
    Sag Bill TV Clichy
    Cesc Rambo Denilson
    Rosicky Eddy Arshavin

Subs: Fab, Nik, Traore, Sol, Vela, Walcott, Eastmond

  38. Micky Did It 89

Lazer: blimey that is a fragile team. You cannot depend on a performance from Rambo, Den, Eddy or Arshavin. Is there any chance of a fit Diaby?

  39. Micky Did It 89

Sky this morning again with rumours of Huntelaar to us (maybe they are clutching straws simply to have something to say), but they followed that up with story of Shrek to Barca. Pleeeeaaaase may that one be true.

  40. SUGA3

    Micky,

we can only keep our fingers crossed…

while I would hate to break up the CB partnership, I would consider playing Sol with Billy and moving TV to DM – then again, Sulzeer may not have enough in his tank to play 2 games in the space of 3 days…

  41. Micky Did It 89

Iceman: kinda what I thought. It is a game where Eddy and AA could go walkabout, while Rambo and Den are simply out fought.
As I said on here yesterday, I think we will lose Villa/Chavs and beat Utd/Pool. Utd/Pool not only home, but they suit our style better.

  42. SUGA3

Shrek to Barca – that is just fucking lazy journalism…

why would Pep want this pikey thug who can barely speak English and is too much of a dumb fuck to learn any Spanish?

  43. LAzer

I don’t see who else he could possibly play. Diaby is out for sure. Nik is just back so probably won’t start. Walcott is clearly in the worst form of his life. Sol and Gallas would be two right footed CBs. I like the shout for TV as DM but don’t see it happening. Rambo, Cesc and Denilson are the only fit midfields it seems. Unless its Rosicky in mid with Walcott on the right but the midfield would still be weak.

Its going to be a very very tough game away, we will need some magic from somewhere. Am almost too nervous to watch, hate to be a bad omen, last time I felt this nervous before a series of fixtures we were about to play Mancs in the CL semi’s last term. ;-( yikes!

  44. Goonerkat

    Good morning!
Got in early to write something here…
still sad about the FA cup…
would be great to see Sol play for half the match to support Gallas and TV… a good idea if TV is placed as DM. Denilson and Walcott played so poorly on Sunday I am not so sure if they should start or even be there tomorrow… I was hoping Song would be back for tomorrow’s match but don’t have to wait long to see him play for us again!
If Bentner’s back for tomorrow’s game would be great.
We do have a strong team but it only takes one weak link to destroy everything…
hope we will beat villa tomorrow… very excited!!
back to work… have a nice day everyone! :>

  45. ethangunner

    lazer

not far from the starting line up ill give you that .
id say your spot on !

i even noticed denilson in there ;)
yes … you know wenger JUST HAS TO include him :)
