On a final note, watching the chav mancs last night, it emerged that their manager rates Given as the best in the premier league and in the top five worldwide, and we didn’t think he was better than Almunia??? And before you say he wasn’t on our radar, I have a source that says he thought he was coming and he was gutted when he didn’t, what a shame, he was inspirational last night, and even though he plays for them, I really like him, he’s worth 10 clean sheets a season and 15 points.

I noticed Diaby held on to the ball for too long when he went back, he learned to let go of it quicker, and when he is higher up the pitch it’s okay, but on Sunday he almost lost the ball right in front of the defence. He could do one stupid mistake like that and cost us.
I think he will play the same team as last time, only Denilson in for Eastmond.
I love the team above, full of attacking flair but…..the unsung Denilson needs a spot so he can develop as well.

Wenger’s press conference consisted of him stating clearly that we are no closer to a signing and having Walcott back and Bendtner back soon will be like new signings. I don’t expect anyone coming in- hopefully it won’t show at the end of the season as what will Wenger’s answer be then? I personally think we need a defensive midfielder as much as a forward as well.

My simple answer was, he saves the ones you expect him to save but never the ones you hope he would save…Err I was a little wrong there, now if he saves anything it’s a bloody miracle.

To be honest I am numb to it now. I said at the start of the month I was not going to get caught up in transfer frenzies as it always ends in dissapointment. So have taken the mindset that we are singing nobody (Sol does not count) and anything else is a bonus.

2) Wenger says he is looking but ‘honestly’ is not close to signing anyone. And he will only add if he finds somebody better

I agree with you on the English press thing. I believe you meant English media not only press. But that’s true, it would be devastating for the media and all those pundits who wrote us off to finish even 4th at the start of season. Also, it’s funny how all of them pundits have now started praising our style of play, our talented young players who are scoring goals for fun.

Why does everyone rate Given?? I don’t think he’s particularly good, I’m not pretending Almunia is better because he’s pretty useless & I said on here before the season even started that I would like to see Szczesny in goal, the guy is fantastic & proving that at Brentford.
The fact is though that nobody can say we’d be in a better position if Given was in goal, after all Man City have conceded more goals than us & Given hasn’t prevented teams like Burnley getting a draw at the council house.
We need a new keeper, but lets make it someone world class, not just another average one.

At the beginning of this season there were a lot of people on here still complaining about our defence, yet we’ve conceded less than city. They have Lescott & I lost count of the people saying we should’ve signed him. We also leave ourselves open to counter attack far more than City do, so really there goals against column should be better than ours. If Given is as good as he’s being made out to be why have City lost so many points to poor teams??
All I’m saying is that I don’t want either keeper, either play someone with real potential or buy a truly world class one.

Pedro – I think Fab is better than Almunia. He has this bad habbit though of running like a steam train to the edge of the box when he’s about to throw the ball out & he’s gone over the line several times without being pulled up, the trouble is, that luck won’t last. I’d feel much more comfortable if he curbed himself from doing that.
Ken – thats your opinion, I don’t agree with it. It’s easy to blame the players around him, but it’s hardly like Given has won anything. I remember Ben Foster looking like a world beater at Watford, because he had shot after shot to save, put him in a team that doesn’t have that & he looks awful.

Last night on Revista De La Liga, Gilliam (whatishisname, The Spanish expert) broke the news that the father of Racing’s 18 years old Canales was spotted at the Arsenal training ground on Monday. As for Given, I think he is good. As you say, better than Almunia. But if only Almunia could get the trust of his defence back and start to show some consistancy, then suddenly the huge difference that everyone seen to see would suddenly be difficult to distinguish..

It’s no surprise to me that Newcastle are a team that struggled, yet now Given is no longer there they are top of their league. Yes it’s the championship, but a league widely acknowledged as the toughest to get out from & Newcastle sold or lost nearly all their better players pre season. The defence which is there now was the same one Given was playing behind.

Should be a good game tonight, I feel confident after the teams display at the reebok.
The GK position for us is a problem at the moment, and it is so obvious that our defence looks more nervous and shaky when Almunia is in goal. And every time the oppo team get a corner I fear for the worst because the guy cant be trusted to deal with crosses.
I think the solution will be promoting from within because our two Poles look good and promising, and I cannot imagine AW spending over 5mil on a keeper let alone the 10mil a true world class GK will cost.
Fabiansky is and will be better than Almunia, only thing is that he needs to stop being so impulsive. He needs to plan his actions in the air a little better.
But I for one almost hope that Almunia becomes unavailable for the month to come..

Man Utd’s only chance & Given, instead of knocking the ball out, knocks it towards the middle of goal which ends up resulting in a tap in for Giggs. Then in the second half he dives to his left before Owen even shoots & only Onuoha on the line prevents a goal. If that had been Almunia he’d have been slated on here (& rightly so) but as it’s Given people just forget it.

The problem with Arsenal keepers is the concentration issue. Face it, for long periods we dominate possession, opposing teams barely have a sniff at goal, then there is a set piece or maybe a break away once in a half, by then our keeper is cold having done nothing. If Almunia was playing for any other team in the bottom half I think you will see him being praised as a great keeper cos he is saving 20 out of the 24 shots on goal.
Currently he is saving 2 out of the 3 shots to save! Mostly.

Most keepers for the big teams are in a similar situation, there is only a couple of chances every game, and those chances are mostly on set pieces or during counter attacks.
Most big teams manage it, Dida does it in Milan, Julio Cesar does it in Inter, Cech does it in Chelsea, Casillas does it in R.M. etc etc etc….
What is sooo difficult with our gameplay that it differs sooo much from the other teams? The 4-3-3?
Well, here’s a piece of news for you. Valdes does it in Barcelona! And we’ve copied their gameplay this season. Sure the 4-4-3 stretches out the defensive line a lot, and creates space for an attacking team between midfield and defence, but thats about keeping pressure, nothing our GK can do now can he? So in the end, ‘our’ game play isn’t really the issue for Almunia, it’s himself and especially the lack of confidence he has when he acts, and ultimately the lack of confidence he brings to our defence…

I think over 90% of those blogs are revenue generating blogs who have links (sponsors) to other websites/businesses to run their blogs. Also, they are full time bloggers cos they don’t have to leave their PC & laptops to go to jobs.

12.10 Sky Sports News understands Arsenal have made an approach for Fulham defender Chris Smalling in a deal which could eventually rise to £7million. However, Fulham want to hang on to the promising young centre-half.

I have been in touch with one scout from Arsenal. I can confirm that it is true that they are interested in Lacina, but they will not make an offer during the January transfer window for him.
His work permit is an issue for England, and this is the reason Arsenal will not be pursuing him in January. But the summer is different. However in Italy this isn’t a problem.

Arsène Wenger has been in an unusual position during this transfer window.
Although he admits his side lack a striker, they are not in need of goals.
Consistency has been the key. While Chelsea may have smashed seven past Sunderland at the weekend and Spurs thumped nine against Wigan late last year, the Emirates Stadium side have been top of the scoring charts ever since they hit Everton for six on the opening day of the campaign.
Only Sunderland and Chelsea can truly claim to have shut-out a full-strength Arsenal this season. In the Premier League, Wenger’s men have 55 goals in 21 games via 16 different scorers.
You can attribute well over half to central midfield (Cesc Fabregas 10, Abou Diaby 5, Aaron Ramsey 3, Denilson 3, Alex Song 1) and the centre backs (Thomas Vermaelen 4, William Gallas 3).
Of course, this could be explained way with injuries – Robin Van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner and, to a lesser extent, Eduardo have all spent significant time on the treatment table. However Wenger feels there could be something more going on. The Frenchman suggests the relationship between the forward line and particularly the midfield may have changed in recent years.
It is no wonder that UEFA’s technical report into last season’s Champions League had chapter called ‘The Disappearing Striker’. It seems the days are gone when a No 9 and No 10 speadheaded a static 4-4-2 and scored 50 per cent of their team’s goals.
“It is a possible idea,” admitted Wenger. “But it depends on the personality and the quality of your midfielders. If you have many players who can score that is OK but overall I still believe that strikers are very, very important.
“Still we used to say the midfielders are the guys who bring the strikers alive but what is happening now is the strikers are the guys who can bring your midfielders alive. They come to score from deeper positions and you can really do that with one-man up front.”
Wenger admits that, to him, a striker’s assists tally is now as important as his goals ratio.
“It is basically the efficiency of the team and the number of goals the team scores [that is important],” he said. “I believe if the whole side scores goals then, for me, the striker is good.
“[For example] Robin Van Persie, when he played we always scored three or four goals. He didn’t score too many [himself] but he made a lot. Not only with passing, but with movement and the quality of that movement. Strikers open walls for the deeper players. That is a big part in the modern game.”

He took off Tevez in 79 to bring on Benjani. And then in 84 he took off SWP to bring on old man Sylvinho.
If the last 15 minutes were nerve-wracking for me, what were they like for City fans?
He got away with it. He takes a one-goal lead to Old Trafford for the second leg.
When Mancini and his assistant Brian Kidd look at the last 20 minutes of that DVD, including the five minutes of injury time, they’ll wonder how they got away with it.
Bizarre team selection, really. He had two left backs on the flank against Valencia : Garrido and Zabaleta. But they gave the winger far too much space, Rooney stabbed his low cross against keeper Shay Given and the ball hit teenage centreback Boyata and broke for Ryan Giggs to tap in from one yard.

I think there is a point to that article, if you look at most of the Arsenal games where RVP played, he acted as a targetman most of the time, holding the ball up high on the pitch so that the midfield could either force their way towards the box or so that RVP could redistribute it to the sides to let him then regain the ball in a later situation, to strike himself.
This particular situation is something that we have been lacking lately, to have that option of making the forward pass to a player that has that combination of physical and technical presence to hold the ball and redistibute it…
And it’s exacly the thing we lacked against the Chavs, that and more physical presence on the midfield(Diaby).
If Bendtner can provide even a little of this we’d be able to lift our game to the same level of August.
Maybe not the same level as with RVP ofc, but at least we’d be able to raise our game considerably.
Agree Johan, Arshavin just gets bulldozed by the centre half when he has his back to defenders, Bendy wont be as easy….I hope!!

I agree with Pedro the football related chat here and the speed of response is pretty much the best.
I think it might be good to back off the siege mentality thing a tiny bit though – I don’t think most internet fans care too much about the AKBs thing just is the blog interesting. I’m basically a big Wenger supporter and I don’t think the criticism is all that over the top (some posters maybe) – check back and I think you can find posts where Geoff calls him the best coach in the world.
For me it’s the difference between accepting that Wenger knows football and his squad and how to win games and trophies better than any of us (which i think is obvious) and jumping from that to a conclusion that he can’t make mistakes and you shouldn’t criticise anything he does (which is your AKBs).
Similarly when Geoff slaughters Song or Denilson or whoever, he normally says he thinks they may well work out long term (but he doesn’t think the team should lose points trying to get them there).
There are some anti-Grovists on other blogs but they’re still reading it to know about it, i guess.

Yeah I’m not against Smalling at all Pedro, nor saying I don’t rate him. I like the look of him, though not seen anywhere near enough to have any real opinion on him. Just weird timing, Wenger always goes on about our needing 4 centre backs, and Campbell coming in means we have four so Senderos can leave. Weird Smalling coming in after that, when it means we’ll have 5, and he won’t even make the bench. Maybe sign him and loan him back to Fulham, or someone else.
I disagree about Bendtner meaning that we’re less likely, interviewers and the press keep trying to put those words in his mouth, and Wenger has said every time that Bendtner’s return certainly doesn’t mean noone is coming in, and Bendtner would play with a new signing. I’d still be very surprised if a forward doesn’t come in, even if Bendtner scores against Stoke as a sub, then hattricks in starts against Villa and Utd!
Cant say I have ever paid much attention to Smalling playing, so I won’t profess to being an expert on how good he is.
If it happens, then I have no complaints and will go with Wenger on this one. I will watch the headlines in the coming days to see where it goes. SSN have become pretty unreliable recently with their SSN understands rubbish. They said we were signing Matuidi last August and that Flamini was going to City yesterday.

Silvestre, Sol, Senderos and Gallas all have their contracts finishing at the end of the season. Senderos will probably go now but even after that we can only be sure that Vermaelen and JD will start next season.
I hope Smalling is better than i think. Have never seen him play but FUlham signed him from a non league club (Maidstone i think) so i wont expect much from him. Wierd signing if i ever saw one.

Perfect age to blood him! He wont moan about first team chances and he’ll get plenty of games because Gallas wont last forever.
Stu that’s what makes me optimistic about him.
At the age of 20 I’d expect a player to be playing pretty regularly at a team like Fulham if he’d come through Premiership ranks, but the fact he came from there is reassuring as he might have amazing natural ability but a late developer because he didn’t come through an academy.

Neither Gallas nor Vermy have gone, so noone is going to come into the first team in defence!

Stu I think of the Smalling signing (if true) in a similar way to the Ramsey signing. Barely played for the first team but talent there so can come straight into first team squad. Wouldn’t say it means JD going at all. Next season with JD AND Smalling we’d only have 4 centre backs, which is the minimum really.
Not sure where Nordveit fits in, possibly as a sub DM as that’s where he’s been playing in Germany. Or even a loan to someone who’ll play him centre back, maybe a loan to a premiership side.
Bartley isn’t close to the first team squad yet, at the end of next season if he goes on loan maybe he’ll make the step up in the summer, and Gallas will be at the end of the road by then.

Look at the fullback Cissokho who plays in Lyon, a year and a half ago noone knew at all who he was and he played for a 4-5th division club in France, the problem was that noone had spotted him. I think Cesc is playing like a true captain he is trying very hard, Denilson has had a poor game and has been our weakest link,to be honest I’d of preffered Eastmond playing. We are missing Traore’s areial ability, he won A LOT of headers against Bolton who are a team that excel in the air, Eduardo has tried wel but his finishing has been sub par thus far, Almunia made an excellent save aswel, Diaby has done well, the passage of play where he ran all the way back to make the tackle and then played a brilliant ball through to Eduardo was great, and Rosisky had been good, even before the goal, he’shelping us drive foward, I think if we run at this team we could do damage.

Given our injuries I think it’s looking like we can say this team has grown up, took a while and still no guarantees of winning the league but it’s good to see.

Denilson played pretty well in the second half I thought. Had a bit of a poor first half, just couldn’t seem to get with the pace of the game and was constantly putting passes behind players. Secondly half Cesc moved forward a bit, Denilson had more space and he impacted on the game a lot more.
None of our goals tonight were that special, they were all by and large a result of continued pressure, which is good to see as that’s what Chelsea do to teams.

The thing about the Gallas challenge was that in real time it didn’t look like anything really and even in the replay you clearly see the ball in close proximity which means he made a genuine attempt to get the ball but of course that won’t be highlighted just like that cunt Taylor’s hair pull and knee across Cesc’s neck wasn’t highlighted. Not seen any replays of the Gallas challenge yet, however watching it live nothing wrong with it as far as I could see and the ref obviously agreed. People won’t like this but Kevin Davies was was superb in the air tonight and held the ball up really well, on this evening performance only far better than Bentner, however Bendy has time on his side.

Gotta say at the time I thought it looked terrible, couldn’t believe the ref didn’t give a foul! Not as clear cut as I thought on replay, but still reckon should’ve been a ref, and an obvious foul.
The ref was terrible today, so many fouls by Bolton that he just let go, and when he did give them he didn’t book deserved challenges, or systematic cynical fouling by them.
ethan Arshavin was imo the worst player on the pitch in the first half. Improved second half, but still far from his best, and certainly not one of our top 4 players!
Vermaelen likewise I thought had a poor game by his standards. Davies fouls like anything and gets away with it, but Vermy really couldn’t get anywhere near him.
Cesc was out of this world though, amazing.
Rosicky was good, but not amazing imo.
Eduardo had a pretty good game, linked the play up very well, and was very strong with his back to goal, turned their defenders and created space for the players around him. Scoring boots aren’t there yet, but all round game getting better with every game, and physically looking stronger and stronger.
Denilson did some very good things, but his tackle for the pen was absolutely terrible, and his passing was off. Just back from injury though, can’t expect him to be totally sharp.
Almunia didn’t put a foot wrong today.

ethan im Arshavin was VERY poor first half.
Nothing to do with being marked etc. In situations where he had loads of time and space, and obvious passes on, he was just getting them wrong. Poor decision making at times, but even when he made the right decisions, he was just off his guage, couldn’t get the right weight on passes, under or over hit the majority of them.
Eduardo had a good game today, almost scored with one over the bar, and a good chance after a Cesc run. His link up play is superb, and he’s getting into goalscoring positions, as well as creating chances for others. He set up Arshavin’s goal too.
IMO Eduardo > Arshavin today.
Arshavin did a couple of good things, backheel for Cesc shot, and the turn at the end was amazing, though the failure to pass for a Theo tap in was attrocious, and incredibly selfish.
His touch and passing was just very off today, which is a pity.
I agree about Cesc, he’s become pretty unplayable. If he leads us to the title and Champs League, Spain win the world cup too he has to be in with a shout of world player of the year!
Ronaldo is getting alot of stick at Madrid, though I guess Messi will still be very tough to beat.
I wouldn’t say they deserved it at all ethan, two chances, two individual mistakes, and two goals.
We certainly weren’t at our best, but still dominated the play, and created many more chances than them.
I didn’t think we really struggled. As with the Blackburn game early in the season, it felt like we were always going to win, though the atmosphere was a bit cagey at 2-0 down.
also the run at the end 1 on 1 with the keeper AA23 showed great smarts on goal he didnt pull the trigger too early like most of our lads would.

I stand by my comments about Denilson re his 1st half. He was irresponsible. Whether that is a trait he has coz he still needs to grow up is debateable. But, if you cast your eye over this blog 2 years ago you will see the same sort of stuff being written about him as per the 1st half v Bolton was written.
But the boy became a man in the 2nd half, appeared to concentrate on the task @ hand & bingo the desired result was achieved. I bet Le Gaffer would have given him a rocket @ half time, would that make AW fickled

The only concern for me is the team still looks rugged at the start for most games, still they need a wakeup call. Had it been chelsea, it would have been 80 percent game over with the first goal itself. They are so good at shutting the doors on you.
Performance wise no complains tho after the first 20 mins.
