For you lot that chugged at my Ugs, you are mugs, cos I made it in for the suds!

by & filed under Uncategorized.

Ok cast your mind back to Christmas day and my post, I said I had been bought a pair of Ugs, all the way from Australia, I was laughed at, told only girls wear them and don’t bring them to the Villa game, I didn’t, I felt proper humiliated.

Today, London is in chaos, I woke up to 8 inches of snow and the BBC said don’t travel if you don’t have to, well we’re supposed to be going to the Grove tonight to smash Bolton, I had to, enter my Ugs, yes I wore them, I glided effortlessly into the station and made my way to work, Ugs 1, Grovers nil. And tonight I’ll get to the ground and warm up by drinking their beer, the suds!

Ok so my country cousins, fellow Grovers and no doubt Pedro will laugh at me when we meet, but I don’t care, the birds love ‘em!

So the snow was everywhere but not in London, will the game be cancelled? Probably, but I made it and you can laugh all you want, I don’t care, I have warm feet and I didn’t slip over once!

Onto tonight, I’ll be there if it’s on, I hope it’s on but in this age of politically correct cancellations for adverse weather, I suspect they’ll cancel it, it also means that Cesc, Song and Bendtner will be a game nearer returning and Wenger will jump at that chance.

He was bigging up Denilson yesterday which means he will step in for Song and not Diaby and it also means he won’t be buying a replacement, shame that, a few world class players will never go amiss.

If the Merida stories are true, it’s the first clear signs of my youth policy theory, that it’s not working, why? Let me explain. With a young midfield of Cesc, Nasri, Song, Denilson, Ramsey and Diaby all between 18 and 23 where do all the other 18-21 year olds fit in? Who’s place will Merida, Wilshere, Thomas, Frimpong, Coquelin, Eastmond or Lansbury take? When Coquelin is 23, Song will be what, 27? That’s still younger than Rosicky and Arshavin, so what will we do, get rid of Song? Unthinkable, get rid of Nasri, yeah right, so my fear is these kids, that are super, duper prospects will want to leave to fulfill their potential.

This isn’t a criticism it’s a fact, how do we keep all these great young prospects when they already have great young prospects ahead of them?

The boss ruled out Paddy coming back and I think that’s a real shame, he is still a monster and experience like that will help out the youngsters, I remember Cesc saying how much playing with Paddy and Dennis helped him improve, still it won’t happen, so we’ll leave it there.

No transfer news to report save if he does buy, he’ll buy early doors, but he seems to be waiting for the merry go round to start with City and Chelsea to get the ball rolling, me I’d go and sign Dzeko right now and get him playing soon.

I think Carlton Cole is a class act, but he’s like a fighter with a glass jaw, he’s the sort of player I would have, a cheaper Dzeko, but it would be like buying another Rosicky or an Overmars, way too risky, but the sort of gamble Wenger would take, if he worked out, and stayed injury free, he’d be a great addition and probably make the team for South Africa, but for me, it’s a big ask and a huge gamble.

We’ll see, I hope like hell the game is on, waiting 6 days between matches when all the golf couses are shut is way too long, Arsenal, I’m ready for this, get it on, if the weather stops the 4 Bolton fans for making the trip, so be it, London is clear and the trains are running.

It may be difficult for our board members to make it in their chauffeur driven cars though, so I’m not holding my breath.

Have a great day grovers, we live in hope.

ethan we had loads of scorers with vp in there, and imo he’s one of the top strikers in europe, very few better “goto men” in my eyes.

The system is built to be fluid, even if we had villa or ibrahimovic or torres in there centrally we’d still have the whole team getting and scoring chances

  2. AndAPrayer

because reggie, we do actually have to be able to afford them otherwise it’s just debt with a very shaky repayment plan (again see leeds and portsmouth) and without a suger daddy that’s bad news and sugar daddies tend to end up being bad news themselves as well.

  3. Maksud

Jeez you guys post fast. I hope the Everton game doesn’t get postponed as well, if it does though they should just replay the whole round towards the end of the season.

Ethan, he’s super prolific as well, which bodes well for us snaring him!

Has there ever been a prolific 6ft6 plus striker?
    ——————————–
NO – and thats tells me enough to know we shouldnt sign another dud :)

all the best strikers that have ever graced the football pitches of the world ,none have been monster tall ..

most of the best are about 6 foot and have that special flair ..

sorry we dont need height when countering or on the break ! – ( the main way we score )

we just need foot speed – class and strong finishing !

  5. choy

Maksud, be sure to forward that fixture list to wenger.

He needs to take a look at it before he sleeps and after he wakes up.

We can’t go in without reinforcements!

sure A agreed .. the system is working currently ,lets not change it ..

but our strikers still get many chances in front of goal , but prefer to pass it about ..

i got 2 words for you

    CLINICAL FINISHER !

  7. AndAPrayer

well ta ta Reggie, if you come up with someone who you think we should buy who we can afford to buy then please share it.

For the record I don’t think Cole is right and I don’t think Dzeko will come to us and once RVP is fit I’m not really sure where he fits in – this gangly Traore guy seems to fit the bill of looking like being pretty good, not costing the earth and probably ok to work within a squad system once everyone’s fit.

  8. Jacques

Look, I know some of you will disagree with my premises here, but the reason I support Arsenal is because of the way that they play. It’s pure, and it’s gorgeous. Furthermore, they don’t have the absurd debt issues most clubs have, which at least in my case, seems to be an issue of morality.

Arsenal, under Wenger, is one of the few clubs that have an underlying beauty not just to the way that they play, but they way they develop new players, the way they make clubs who’ve spent millions more look foolish.

To be honest, I’m not concerned if we don’t win trophies. I am concerned if we stop playing gorgeous football. Sure, it might not happen every match, but when has it ever?

  9. AndAPrayer

I like the sentiment Jacques but not the reality of it. I’d far prefer to say that I’d be happy as long as we’re right up there – if we’re a point or 2 off every season it would be frustating as hell but at least we’re we’d always be involved and have the feeling that it’s got to go our way soon (obviously I’d prefer to win it every year before that comes back to bite me).

Spurs used to practice only beautiful football and look what that lead to – we have to be competitive with it.

As for being debt free, or at least have manageable debt- i’m in agreement with that – I’d far rather have an arsenal that wins nothing than no arsenal at all.

  10. Jacques

    @AndAPrayer

Well, I’ve also made the assumption that playing class football will ensure we at least finish well. If we are consistently getting brutes, then we probably aren’t playing very beautiful football. Certainly without at least some measure of success we won’t be able to attract those players who do play well.

As far as history goes, I don’t know much. At least in terms of this crowd, I think I’m a bit of a premier league newbie.

  11. charybdis1966

Jacques – I respect your reason and any reason someone follows Arsenal is great by me.

    The more gooners the better.

  12. Jacques

    @gambon

I absolutely don’t think they’re exclusive! Whether it’s this year or not, I do expect Arsenal to hoist a trophy sometime in the very near future. I certainly hope it’s sooner rather than later!

Furthermore, just to clarify my position: I’m absolutely not against signing new, or even big-name, expensive players, so long as they fit into the system. If in doing so we bankrupt the club, then we’ve done so at the expense of our future. There certainly is a fine line between buying established talent and taking risks on inexpensive prospects. While I think Wenger certainly veers to the prospect side, I don’t think he’s very far off of the ideal that at least I have.

  13. AndAPrayer

Gambon, you may have already seen it but at 22:11 I wrote an essay like response to an earlier point of yours.

Feel free to ignore it if you wish but I’d hate for all that typing to go to waste by you simply not being aware of it.

  14. Pat

Fucking bullshit. The game could have gone on and should have. We can’t afford anymore fixtures in what is already the hardest period of the season. The MANCS, like fucking always, get a good schedule.

Why can’t we just play the Bolton cunts twice in 3 days? They might as well forfeit. They’re a sad excuse for a football team.

  15. Pat

  18. Hat-trick Hero

Maciek, i totally agree with you mate. I just want Wenger to do what needs to be done, to bring some trophies home to the Grove.

  19. AndAPrayer

we’re looking for a backup defender to last 6 months and a striker who hopefully won’t cost the earth while also being good – given that Huntelaar and Babel have flopped yet will still cost a pretty penny surely Wenger’s reported targets are sensible ones?

  20. A

    campbell?!

huntelaar and babel are massively previous overhyped flops, going for them would show a massive lack of ambition and imagination!

  21. A

yeah there is maciek, but i’d be absolutely shocked if it wasn’t complete and utter bollocks. I expect him to sign for a championship side, or bottom third of the prem soon.

we either pass our way to a goal , counter on the break , or long bomb it in with either rambo or cesc .

but its been a long while since one of our strikers really dominated ..

we are hardly a perfect business model currently with over 300 mil in debt

  26. Maciek

Me too A. He is past it.BUT we do need another quality cd.
    -Cein or Upson,
    -Parker or Sissoko,
-a striker and we are sorted

  27. Hat-trick Hero

Although if we did resign Campbell. He would be better
backup than, Silvestre. But still not what we need. We are better off getting a young DF, so that he learn Arsenal way and be ready to take over from Gallas.

  28. Maciek

HTH. I think, not. And then gallas or Vermy will be injured and we ared doomed. It will be the same thing like in 2007. Our STUBBORN manager won’t listen.

  29. A

HtH no he really wouldn’t, Silvestre is bad but Sol would be double his level of past-itness!

As long as Senderos stays we don’t need back up, though I do agree that we need a top young centre back to replace gallas alongside Vermy. That’s a purchase though that we’ve really gotta try and find the right bloke, and the right bloke is much more likely to be available in the summer than in Jan, especially in a world cup year.

Upson is pants, and Cetin is untested in a top league, and pretty old.

Parker isn’t what we need at all, we need a DM, in our system Parker would play the driving Diaby role, and he’s a fair bit worse imo.

In my eyes as long as we keep hold of Sendy, all we need is a forward and we’re sorted, Cole, Saha, or Adriano, and i’ll be a very happy bunny.

  30. Stu

Just got a brilliant new phone. LG KS360. Its taking some getting used to, having a qwerty kepbad and all. Great way to eliminate txt speak though…which i fucking hate….almost as much as shit Ugg boots.

Is cunt Shrek injured or what? Someone had better not have been making that up ffs. Tonights match being called off was fucking bad enough.

  31. ReVELAtion

Grimandi and Gazidis are in france apparently meeting with representitives of Gignac after we had a 12m bid accepted according to reports coming out of frnace.

  32. Hat-trick Hero

Him not signing anyone in Jan 2007 was definetly the reason we didnt go on to win the Premiership. I hope he has learnt, but i’ll wait and see. The league is there for the taken.

  33. AndAPrayer

While that is true Ethan there is a difference between manageable debt secured against incoming ticket sales and debt used to secure the services of playing staff who regardless of reputation can easily flop or at least not be as successful as their price tag should indicate (see Veron or Berbatov).

There is also a very good reason why we are trying to reduce our debt – borrowing money costs money, usually a hell of a lot of money. Leverage can make sense at an accountancy level but as a business model can leave you overly vunerable to economic shifts. If burdening the club with debt makes sense economically then do so to get a good player on board but if it doesn’t then the risks in doing so don’t make it worthwhile no matter if we win a trophy or not.

  34. A

Stu I think someone was just saying that Utd would be fucked if Rooney got a serious injury, and then someone else said he would never get a serious injury, whereupon someone else arrived on the scene just reading Rooney, and injury, and got excited, but noone corrected him, then the chinese whispers were allowed to escalate.

  35. Stu

Rev, im not sure whether to believe that or not. Didnt Wenger recently say that he didnt think Gignac was Arsenal class? Or was that made up bullshit too.

  36. Ray in SF

I think for 4 million euros, it would be worth the experiment to have this Traore giant.

I don’t think it would cramp or even change the good things about our style much…and it would certainly give us completely new options

a huge target in himself and someone to lay off crosses for the midgets — and a battering ram to boot

it would completely change the way people defend against us as they would be preoccupied with him and maybe leave some gaps when they park the bus

we might actually score from corners and freekicks…now there’s a novel idea

  37. ReVELAtion

Stu, i’m just repeating hearsay.. However, i doubt wenger would describe a french international player as “not arsenal class”

  38. Jacques

    @Ethan

Like I had said before, I’m less concerned with trophies and more concerned with our style of play.

As far as debt goes, I think that can be attributed to the stadium. Given our income now, it’s very clear that it’s something we can pay off. Not something I think most other clubs can do without all the foreign investment that comes in. Man City for example.

  39. Stu

Yeah thats what i thought when i was skimming the comments A. People should really read the whole comment and some before when they just arrive as not to cause confusing amoungst other grovers.

Oh well…we can only hope that Rooney really will get injured….perhaps in the first minute of the match against us

  40. AndAPrayer

A better version of Silvestre would be ideal for a backup CB i reckon – got to be happy not being first choice and got be able to come in and do the job if needed so can’t be inexperienced.

While I don’t think Silvestre is as bad as some would make out (he’s still not great don’t get me wrong) I can’t see him staying when his contract is up so why not get someone in now to take his role for next season as well. Not sure what ever happened to the rumours about him but Puyol is getting on a bit, reckon he’d be happy warming an ever so comfortable emirates bench?

  41. A

HtH currently yeah I do, and hope he does. A last 6 months in an Arsenal shirt, not fulfilled his potential at all but still leave on a high being part of a treble winning team!

Wenger never said Gignac wasn’t arsenal class, but one of the tabloids did a story saying that he’d ruled him out as didn’t consider him arsenal quality

  42. Jacques

AndAPrayer, you seem to be a mindreader.

As far as Traore goes, I’d just like to see more diversity in terms of play. We don’t have that tall target man. Why not add the option?

  43. AndAPrayer

On the Gignac thing, it could be that Wenger did say that – he said Arshavin had shit stamina and couldn’t cut it in the premier league just before he signed him. I get the feeling Wenger has gotten a bit more aggressive in protecting the targets he’s after being poached.

  44. Jacques

How long do you all expect Gallas to stay? It seems to me he’s taken for granted a bit, but he really is starting to age a bit.

  45. AndAPrayer

well A that’s another of my brilliant ideas you’ve ruined – thanks a lot! :p

Shows that my la liga expertize isn’t up to scratch – surprised their still playing him tbh, although I think he’d be very good for the role I described I honestly felt that age had caught up with him a bit – shows how much I know!

  46. Stu

I expect Gallas to probably leave this summer, depending on how many trophies we have at the end of the season of course. I think if we win something he might be persuaded to stay and win a few more. But if we dont he might think “time to move somewhere else before nobody wants me”.

I dont know though i cant read his mind.

If he does leave then Wenger could be fucked trying to find so many defenders. Senderos, Silvestre, Gallas are all free this summer and JD isnt exactly reliable or imo imo good enough (yet).

  47. Stu

Probably just does it for a laugh HtH so he can be delighted if they do sign. And if they dont he can just promote someone… some people get their jollies from the strangest of things.

  48. Jacques

Things aren’t bad now, but we seem to be on the brink of potentially losing alot of players in key positions that we aren’t necessarily able to replace. I think we’ll make some signings based on that alone, whether or not Wenger considers them essential to this seasons success or not.

Gallas has been playing fantastic. I’m not sure we’d be doing well at all with anyone besides Song in his position, and even then we’d lose him where he’s most valuable.

Is it legal to clone Vermaelen? If we did, would he be considered his own property or would he be property of Arsenal? We need to get on that.

  49. A

    Sorry AndAPrayer!!

I reckon Gallas will stay on and start next season as first choice, but we’ll certainly have brought someone in who will be in the mind of Wenger as the man to replace him. He’ll leave in 18 months, or maybe even stay on another year as a squad player

  50. Paulinho

He looked complete gash against Ireland, although if your were gonna judge players on those games, you wouldn’t have thought Gourcuff was much cop.

  51. Cotto

fuck man, this whole striker merry go round is gonna do my head in more than the bullshine of the arshavin month long transfer this time last year.

  52. Ray in SF

I’m not convinced we need the creme de la creme

if we buy some people that are solid squad players and have serious replacements for the injuries we know we’re going to have to deal with, then I’m happier than if we don’t buy because there isn’t anybody better than we have already

  53. Ray in SF

well if I’m going to go unchallenged…

I think we should have bought Alonzo and benefitted from his resale value

there…that should flush out A if he’s not asleep

  54. Ray in SF

I think we should go for quantity over quality…I agree with Mayank that the basic squad is good enough to win the league, we just need replacements at the utility level to plug the gaps

yes i would prefer a star like TV or AA to come in and stengthen the squad by adding a new dimension, but failing that, just like for like when we need replacements

  55. ethangunner

    &aprayer

whilst it is ok to marvel at wenger’s business model from a sustainability stand point , id rather focus on silverware as that will also ensure sustainability…

and more importantly justify ticket pricing being so high ! satify fans , the list is endless…

whilst im not in the UK and dont frequent the games you would think why the fuck should i care about ticket prices ?

well its about a future fan base , and more importantly a dwindling existing fan base ..

that is the long term business model ..
you dont draw in punters your screwed .

    SUCCESS ON THE PITCH ….
    will give us that ..
whilst you always have disciples you have income , its what religion as a business model is based upon . and football is the same ..

  56. Ray in SF

i think we should bring in Traore the not-so-gentle giant and use him to confuse defenses that think they only need to clog the penalty area in two-dimensions

a 6-8 aggressive forward would completely screw the park the bus brigade

  57. Pat

“Grimandi and Gazidis are in france apparently meeting with representitives of Gignac after we had a 12m bid accepted according to reports coming out of frnace.”

Anyone have a source for that? ^^^

  58. Pat

    From Arseblog:

The Mirror reckons Andre Pierre Gignac is most likely to come in, at least from the names they mention in the article, and I did hear Philippe Auclair on the radio last night speak about him in reference to us.

  59. AndAPrayer

Unfortunately Ethan, as Man Utd are testament to – success on the pitch does not guarantee a healthy balance sheet. Thier debt is only going up and at some point they’ll have to pay it back – how they maintain their competitiveness while doing that will be interesting to see.

There are plenty of other examples of success on the pitch not reaping equivalent financial rewards as well. Real Madrid are rumoured to have been close to going under when Spain basically bankrolled them, Chelsea would probably be in a similar boat to Leeds if Abramovish hadn’t come in and Portsmouth won the cup 2 years ago.

Success certainly helps on the balance sheet front but it still has to balance (I know it will do anyway andI am in fact thinking of the profit & loss book before any smart arse pipes up). Wenger is operating against competitors who, due to being sponsored by the Russian Mafia or Arab Princes don’t have to worry about that – the famous famous players attract the attention of those people and their price sky rockets accordingly. Now Arsenal could over burden itself with debt to compete or go the route Wenger takes of getting as much value as he can and bringing young players through.

That’s not to say I don’t want Arsenal to buy the right player or push the boat out a bit on occasion; I just don’t want them to put the club’s long term future at stake for short term gain that quite often doesn’t even come to fruition (see Berbatov at £30 odd million)

  60. AndAPrayer

Oh, on that point, there was an interesting point made by a Barca representative in relation to Real’s summer bender. He did a rough calculation as to how many shirt’s Real would have to sell to make up the short coming and it didn’t seem that likely:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1192377/Theyve-splashed-136m-Kaka-Ronaldo–Real-Madrid-getting-money-from.html

People will no doubt point out far eastern markets to make up that short fall but how many chinese fans do you think are wearing official merchandise?

my idea of bliss is sitting down watching the game live from a 50 inch lcd screen with surround sound , and i dont need to line up to take a leak !

i get to see replays and dont misjudge the game because you cant see half of whats going on down the other end with clarity !

ive been to highbury it was a cultural experience but to be honest you dont watch the football half as much ! not with your mates chattering and people spilling beer on your shoes and tall pricks standing infront of you ..

    Morning Grovers.
This whole wait and see if Bendy is fit approach, is fucking unbelievable. We need (apart from the DM and Gall/Verm cover) a goal scorer. Loan or otherwise, and we need him now. Wait till Bendy’s friday fitness test, then give him another week, then make a derisory offer for a player, then miss out. You can see it happening.

i have seen one two videos of Gignac, he looks nothing extraordinary but quite well built to be able to play the target man and also as a second striker..

I personally think he will be a good buy, coz he is versatile, and more importantly likes to finish.

As far as that monster Traore is concerned we have to get him just avoid letting the manures or chavs getting him.

He will contribute to the team on the days when he is playing half asleep. He has got an excellent shot on him, and very much like Ade.

Gignac coming in i would be mighty pleased, provided someone fits in that dm role.

Newbie don’t tell fibs, you aren’t new to this post, your other name is SA. The difference between Pedro and I is I’m a little less of a believer in project youth and write my posts from years of following Arsenal, Pedro has only really experienced Graham and Wenger.

ANOTHER 100 MILLION POUNDS TO SPEND……..

Manchester City are ready to splash out on Palermo defender Simon Kjaer.

The Sun says City owner Sheikh Mansour has given the green light for new boss Roberto Mancini to splash another £100million in the January transfer window.

Mancini’s scouts watched the Danish international against Sampdoria last night and City are poised to swoop for the powerful 20-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Manchester United and Real Madrid.

btw the fixtures coming up are in killing order and frequency, i hope the guys are up for it… they will need a run of a lifetime to come out of that list and still be in the title race.

Read my post today at 9am, should Pedro wake up in time! I talk about Lacina Traore, and give you my thoughts on him.

    Copy and pasted:
No one knows for sure how huge he is exactly, but Lacine Traore is certainly big enough to be in the sights of Arsenal. According to both the Daily Express and Daily Mirror, Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger is determined to bring the 19-year-old Ivory Coast sensation to the Emirates.

The Mirror has Traore – who is already being labelled ‘The New Adebayor’ – standing at 6ft 8in while the Express goes for a more modest 6ft 6in, but it’s clear the giant has more to his game than just size. He’s already helped his Romanian club, FC Cluj, to glory in the Romanian Cup and Supercup competitions.

According to the Mirror, it would cost Arsenal £5million to bring Traore to north London and Cluj President Iuliu Muresan has confirmed Wenger’s interest in the player. Muresan said: “We have been in contact with Arsenal but have not received any concrete offer,” he is quoted as saying. “Four million euros is the fee we are looking for.”

The Cluj coach, Andrea Mandorlini, describes Traore as lightning quick and “technically exceptional” while the player himself tells the Express he is thrilled to be on Arsenal’s wishlist. “It would be a dream for me to get to play on a team so great,” says Traore. “I have a chance there because Arsene Wenger relies heavily on young players. It is sensational to hear Wenger is watching me. I could be a success in England. Even though I am still young, I have a lot of experience and a lot of ambition.”

    ikon,

we need to make up the numbers to cope with that – let’s hope OGL knows it…

    Preencemeka,

‘guess you will need to give your F5 key a torrid time!

we could think of ‘F5 USB Device’ for the LG and transfer window only

Normally, I hate the idea of a giant CF. Crouch looks like a twat to me. Then I think of Usain Bolt, and he does not look like a twat. Look forward to Geoff’s post.

  82. Geoff

If Lacina Traore is that good, how come he’s not in Africa right now and how come Drogba hasn’t been telling the chavs they need to sign him, anyway, don’t listen to me, read todays post for the truth.
