Empty seats, re-negotiated sponsors and we told you on here long ago. And don’t call me the Grinch!

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So let’s start on the deal that was done some time ago with the stadium naming rights and the shirt sponsor. You may remember we said here on Le Grove that it was a woeful deal, some came on and said it was money up front and we needed it to finance the stadium and I know fuck all about finance.

It now tops up the money was part paid (up front) and we are still owed some, Dubai are in the shitter, so we may now be able to buy ourselves out of it and get a real deal, good, don’t say we didn’t tell you that 5 years ago, I sometimes wonder why the Arsenal board think they are so clever. (Dubai part own Emirates)

Stan really is buying Arsenal by a thousand cuts, Stan get on the pot and piss or let someone else buy the shares that will make us the biggest club in the world, I can see no earthly reason why buying 12 at a time makes any financial sense. It’s getting boring, it’s like waiting for Beckham to reveal his haircut in Japan.

I read a poster at a main line station yesterday advertising half season tickets at Fulham for £150, well if that doesn’t tell a story I don’t know what does! And I know how much Adshel advertising costs, it’s not cheap. I said last season that unless Wenger bought some world class players, people like me and many thousands of others would think twice about renewing, Arsene did his usual ‘I will buy players’ crap which ensured we would all renew, only to buy one and sell two, it kept the shareholders happy but once again it cheated the fans, the fans have responded by not turning up many times this season.

Wenger told the press the holes around the ground were due to Christmas shopping, bollocks Arsene, we are football fans and shopping doesn’t stop us, project youth and intransigence does however and it seems that the only way fans can tell you that, is by boycotting games.

I also suspect a lot of seasons were not renewed and the holes in the ground are tickets owned by Arsenal they couldn’t sell, to say we had 60,000 fans there was an insult to our intelligence.

Fans are bleeding, fans are losing their jobs and fans won’t put up with bargain basement transfer policies when they are themselves being charged huge amounts to watch, if spending nothing is the way forward, drop the prices to match those of Fulham, they don’t expect to win trophies.

PHW and co may look at Arsenal fans as the great unwashed, but they are the reason we have so much money, heed the warning Arsene and go forth and multiply, before it’s too late.

Yes we beat Liverpool, but not because Wenger threw his toys out the pram, but because we were better than a shit Liverpool team, the first half against Hull was as bad as I’ve seen, we weren’t that good, just better than Hull. Thank God the ref didn’t see the Nasri stamp, or we may well have lost the game instead on winning it, think about that.

Our fans are celebrating Porto in the next round, why? We couldn’t even beat West Ham, Burnley or Sunderland, we are about to lose Song and Eboue to the ACN, where’s the back up? I have seen no evidence of who can step up, on Saturday we kept banging in crosses for the forwards that were going over their heads, where’s the sense in that, yes we did win, and for that I’m grateful, but I think we are papering over the cracks.

We need to spend in the window, if the management don’t think we can improve on our keeper, then I have no idea what they are looking at, really, someone enlighten me, someone out there tell me how good he is.

The Mancs lost, the Chavs drew, Villa and City are behind us, this is the best chance we have had in 5 years to win something, please, please, don’t blow it Arsene, go out and fill the gaps, if you do that the season is ours, if you don’t, we’ll win nothing, again.

I have always said Diaby has more talent than most of the midfield, the problem is, we only see it every 4 or 5 games, we need a forward with height and ability.

We have lost Robin, Bendtner may come back Ok but as we have seen many times, when players come back from injury, they get injured again, don’t risk our season, I bleed Arsenal and it hurts when we win nothing, it really fucks my week up and I keep waking up thinking we had scored, only to be cruelly reminded by the brain cells that are working at 3am that we in fact drew, or worse. So no one tell me I’m not an Arsenal fan.

We lost Djourou for the season in the summer and Kolo was sold, we bought Vermaelen, great signing but we need another, not a kid, a ready made.

If any of you are horrified by my forthright concerns, and see me as anti-Wenger, then go and buy one of the spare tickets and fill up the stadium with your blind devotion. I love the Arsenal and I did when we were cheering a mural in the North bank, I don’t cheer for the board or the manager, I cheer my team, I don’t have an Arsene Wenger quilt, I have an Arsenal quilt, this season we’ll never get a better chance of winning something, next season more teams will have sugar daddies and it will be tougher to win, come on Arsene, get the cheque book out, we are 3 players short of domination or obscurity if we don’t.

For the record I think Danny Fiszman has done a great job, I love Arsene Wenger and think the football he plays (mostly) is the best I’ve seen, so don’t spoil it for the sake of a few quid, you both saw the difference Arshavin and Vermaelen made when they arrived, just think about it, that’s all I ask.

I was right about the sponsors, I was right about the empty seats and I am right about the players we need.

Have a great day Grovers, it will soon be Christmas and you’ll all be getting those presents from the Arsenal shop you know you wanted! Only 5 days to go until Santa gives us 3 points! Which will in effect be 6!

  1. ManGoonian

I also think Given relies on his reflexes as his main attribute (or 1 of em anyway) and seeing as he is 32 or something, they will be on the slide soon…

But we should deffo go for Craig bellamy…

  2. LAzer

Well I suppose if Al can perform to a level we need with the pressure of losing his spot that can’t be a bad thing. Has anyone noticed, or is it just me, but Al seems to be making a concerted effort in coming out more nowadays?? Maybe he’s been reading us, or maybe he is feeling the pressure in training sessions. Problem is I feel he is just not very good at it and may cost us in looking to prove he is capable.

  3. Pedro

LAzer, did you hear how meek he is in the ESPN interview the other day?

    Very shy and unkeeper like…

I think that concerted effort causes the comms breakdown in defence.

  4. SUGA3

I think it’s just daft to allow Chavs & Mancs to get to all the cream that is the US & Asian market…

tours -> more fans across the world -> more money -> more possibilities of signing top class players…

like I said earlier today: one who does not progress will regress…

do you think Shitty will have these reservations? will they fuck…

  5. gambon

Im not sure Fabianskis gonna be in any way the answer.

Szczesny i think will be different class in a few years. Would like to see a top keeper bought in, with the 2 polish guys as understudies.

Obv sell Almunia & Mannone, theyre useless.

  6. SUGA3

    Pedro,

yep, she could be the face of Arsenal in the US ;)

good for her to read LG – classy lady with great taste she must be

  7. Pedro

I read a post from that Mean Lean chap the other day… he was slagging us off on another site so I thought I’d have a read.

He was saying Diaby has been playing well all season and the difference on Sunday was a different position.

I beg to differ… the difference on Sunday was crisp passing, clinical finishing, good control and getting the ball from out of his feet quickly.

That’s why people were pleased with him…

  8. patthegooner

We are well behind on those markets too.

both Man Ure and Chavski were touring the Far East, when I lived out in Hong Kong in the mid-90′s

Pedro, I just think Almunia is a very average keeper. Surely he would have been picked for at least one spanish squad during the years if he was any good. You usually get 3 keepers in the squad and Injuries would have given him the opportunity to be at least 3rd pick at some point.

  9. LAzer

Perhaps the difference btw Chavs, Mancs and us touring Pedro is that they have a larger squad with perhaps more “star” names I suppose. I am not so sure we all would be traveling far and wide to see Denilson, Diaby, and Ramsey play apart from myself and the diehards here who know what’s what.

But the plastics will travel for Drogsbreath, fat frank, granny shagger and winker.

  10. gambon

I think US tours would be great. I always get a bit jealous when UTD & Chelsea are playing Inter in LA while we’re playing some hungarian team in the austrian mountains.

  11. Pedro

Gambon, she’s normally the butch one… she’s into trucker caps etc… haha!

I thought Mannone was ok! A bit indecisive, but for 20 odd… not bad!

  12. patthegooner

Diaby has been woeful for most of the season. He has been ok in patches, but to his credit he played very well on Saturday.

I thought we were actually pretty awful on the day, and only a Denilson Set Piece stopped them getting booed off at half time.

  13. Evo in Oz

i read Diaby was looking forward to taking over from Song shortly, id prefer denilson in that slot and Diaby more forward in a attacking role

  14. Pedro

LAzer, we’ve got some names nowadays!

    RvP – Best dutch footballer
Arshavin – Most talented in the league
Vermaelen – Best dutch defender… good looking chap, could be of those gay twilight films
    Theo Walcott – Very fast
Cesc – Golden boy of European football
Emmanuel Eboue – Choreographing the next fiddy video

  15. patthegooner

I dont think either Denilson or Diaby are good enough to fill the Song role.

If we dont buy or loan to fill it, I think the gamble may fail and we could fuck it all up in Jan.

  16. SUGA3

second that, Evo – Abou has no defensive discipline whatsoever and it would be a massive waste to play him there…

the more towards the front, the better…

  17. Evo in Oz

Denilson’s tackling and striping opposition players of the ball was 2nd to none before his injury, even better than Song, so it just comes down to his vision and passing really, surely he can do it?! Maybe Nasri could also replace song?

  18. A

pat it could only be 3 games, there’s no chance of signing or loaning someone, because any player who comes in would take a while to adapt, so wouldn’t play for a few weeks anyways, and by then song is back!

Denilson playing that role, with Diaby just playing a bit more disciplined is absolutely fine for me. Denilson providing the defensive intelligence, Diaby the physicality. Bolton home and away, and Everton at home, we should cope with those, just gotta cheer on whoever Cameroon are playing and he could be back for Villa!

  19. Evo in Oz

maybe, but he is as tough as he can be in the body that he has, its not like he is going to put on 20kg of weight/muscle and grow another 6 inches….he just need to get stuck in and pass the ball effectively!

  20. SUGA3

    Evo,

I was actually quite impressed with Denilson’s improved passing (like the inch perfect long ball to Theo who obviously fucked up the chip instead of squaring it to Vela who had the goal gaping)…

the only thing is his lack of strength – I am a bit concerned about him playing w/o Song, I just want to be proven wrong…

  21. LAzer

haha@ ebowie the choreographer!! Maybe I am just selfish and don’t want the nba/nfl crowd to band wagon us. Even the newer fans I have met recently are very unaware of Arsenal star power save for Cesc and Arshavin. They all seem to automatically adopt the chavs as favourites for some reason, and the Mancs are the choice of the “cooler” kids.

  22. ManGoonian

    Gambon;

You seriously are jealous of United and the chavs playing meaningless friendlies 1000s of miles from the UK?

I just see those games as good preparation for fitness, match sharpness and to try out different players/formations, etc…

  23. A

SUGA3 if they get knocked out in the quarter finals then it’s only 3 games, which i reckon would be fine. Even if worst case scenario, he misses the extra 2 games, villa and utd, which would be tougher, but no way we’d sign someone for the sake of 2 games

  24. LAzer

So here is Eden Hazard’s quote from a few weeks ago:

“I am pleased that teams like Arsenal and Real Madrid want to sign me,” before adding, “I know that Barcelona and Inter like me, but I am thrilled to play with Real Madrid or Arsenal,” Hazard said a few weeks ago.

And Goal.com and Marca are reporting he wants to play for Barca. The media can create anything they like eh.

  25. A

i’d say there’s a question suga, tunisia are tough to beat. if they lose in the quarters then song would potentially be back for villa, or absolutely back for utd

  26. SUGA3

    MG,

it’s not about jealousy, it’s about good business sense…

what is the point of playing Szombathelyi Haladas? to put 5 goals past them and fell better? no gain out of this as far as I am concerned…

  27. gambon

Hazarsd is gonna be / already is way better than Theo. We cant wait for him to explode like Ribery then watch him go to the highest bidder.

    ManG,

I would just prefer to play in them big pre-season games rather than underhill etc.

Obviously doesnt matter much, but if we could earn £10m from it, well thats 2 £100k pw players paid for.

  28. ManGoonian

    Suga3;

I was responding to gambon’s comment, mate. He said he was jealous.

As for the pre-season camp in Austria; Its all about getting fitness and so on, playing a top team wont neccesarily teach the manager anything… Anyway, we play the likes of Inter, etc in the Emirates Cup much later in pre-season, when the teams are fitter, stronger and therefore is a better guage of where the team is… IF that is improtant to you???

  29. SUGA3

    A,

OK, what if some shitkicker from Zambia (game played on 17/01) injures him? or even some ‘classy’ player from Tunisia 4 days later?

just 10 days to do business? fuck no…

  30. ManGoonian

    gambon;

Well, if its just about the cash, moolah, green backs, then fair enough! But I just have no interest in high profile pre-season games in any other respect… Its just an excuse for the likes of Sky to show some football before the season starts, so they can justify their effin enormous charges!

And after what happened to RvP in a meaningless high profile friendly… I’d steer well clear!

  31. gnarleygeorge9

    Big Raddy

“Being a Tassie, do you really have that much sun or nuclear power”

    BR

We have loads & loads of water, which the part of Oz that has the yellow cake and/or sunny states don’t have. We are all Australians who look out for each other Big Raddy, not a collection of states like Europe who hate each other

  32. SUGA3

    great minds and all that…

I would take De Jong from Shitty if he’s available – quite a powerful player, who doesn’t mind sitting on the bench…

plus one of the two: Cetin/Subotic as well as a big striker – Adriano on loan until the end of this season, then Chamakh on a free will do…

  33. A

SUGA3 neither of those defenders would be possibilities in Jan because of the world cup. IMO Cetin is too old anyways.

In Jan I want a centre back and a striker, then a dm after that.

  34. SUGA3

    A,

dunno, should De Jong become available, we need to snap him up – quick, strong, aggressive and quite intelligent, just what we need…

I reckon Mancini would not be too unhappy to let him go…

  35. ManGoonian

    BBK;

Oh beeegorrah! Now you are unhappy about pre-season ! Ha! Like it has an impact on how the season pans out…. Long haul flights, might impact on our chances, but i fail to see anything else…

  36. goonermichael

maybe it’s nothing to do with the flights. Maybe some of the players aren’t good enough. just a thought. I’m pissed and off to bed

  37. A

SUGA3 I agree about De Jong, don’t believe for a second he could be available though, and meant to be on silly wages at City….

Yeah I see Cetin as too old, because I expect whoever comes in to replace Gallas in the long run, and a 28 year old won’t be happy sitting on the bench as back up, especially in a world cup year. Gallas could well be around next season too, so Cetin wouldn’t be a regular until gone 30.

I want someone Vermy’s age to come in, so that’s that sorted for 3/4 of a decade, wonder centre back partnership sorted and they’ll grow and develop their understanding over years and years!

  39. gambon

Just to think, if wenger was more decisive in the transfer market we could be looking at a team including DeJong, Given, Ribery, Torres amongst others.

  40. SUGA3

and Turks did not qualify for WC either:

FULL LIST OF TEAMS AT 2010 WORLD CUP

    HOSTS: South Africa

AFRICA QUALIFYING: Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria

ASIA QUALIFYING: Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea

EUROPE QUALIFYING: Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland

SOUTH AMERICA QUALIFYING: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay

NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICA AND QUALIFYING: Honduras, Mexico, United States

    ASIA/OCEANIA PLAY-OFF New Zealand

  41. A

suga3 the only one that came out the other day was zapata, but not seen anything like enough of him to have a decent impression of him!

for me has to be 18-25, right sided, and of a nationality that hasn’t qualified for the world cup, pretty tough one!

yeah if possible i wouldn’t mind the short term option, but i still think it’s very unlikely we could get someone like cetin, because of the world cup, and older players will be less willing to sit on the bench

  42. SUGA3

    A,

Turks did not qualify for the WC, I reckon he would come to us if asked and would not mind sitting on the bench for a season (or less), with Billy being 32 and all that…

  43. SUGA3

    MG,

yes, Håvard Nordtveit may be one for the future (19 y.o. atm) – I think Cetin would fit right into that picture, being 28…

  44. A

True Mang, we’ll see what happens! I’d love JD to make it, but I just never see him being a top top player, which is what we need imo. I don’t see him ever developing the intelligence or concentration levels required.

Nordveit could make it, he’s the opposite to JD really, bit slow, but has the intelligence and reading of the game. Would rather he was playing in defence on loan than dm though.

  45. B.B.K.

m.g if you would of asked me that question 5 years ago you would probably get a page long article from me a.t.m i can’t see what positives there are to take

  46. LAzer

Agree with A on this one MG. From all that I have seen of JD I don’t rate him much either. He has to much nervous energy for a CB, is poor positionally and not such a good head for the height. If anything perhaps he could do a job as DM imo. Also, he has been very injury prone in recent years.

  47. LAzer

I have never seen Nordveit play, not that I recall atleast, but do you think it benefits the reading of the game for a CB if they play as DM A? After all Hangeland used to be a DM when he first started out as well.

In regards to Song though I actually think he is a much better DM then CB and playing DM may have ruined that role for him.

  48. ManGoonian

I take your point BBK, I feel your pain man!

    A & LAzer;

Again, i see where you is coming from, BUT, I can see JD forming a fantastic partnership with vermilli… It is a feckin cryin shame he has to write off this season though… Typical bollocks luck with injuries…

  49. SUGA3

I think we could easily squeeze 3-4 seasons out of SC, which would give us enough time to tell whether Nordtveit and Bartley will make it or not…

  50. SUGA3

Song looked a bit lost last time he played CB (Olympiakos game, I think) – he is a very good DM, keeps getting better: the golden rule is not to fix what is not broken…

  51. A

I’ve only seen him play in the ressies Lazer, but seen something there i’m very impressed with.

I guess playing as a DM could help with that, though it’s a different sort of reading of the game, the quicker he’s playing for whoever as a centre back the quicker he’ll develop there, though maybe he’ll end up as an amazing dm!

i agree about song, not sure about him as a centre back now. Last season there were a couple of times where he played with jd, and imo was better than him, but now i’d be worried with him there, not sure why

  52. LAzer

True enough on Bartley, if he develops properly with the adherence of technical skill and ball play and his physical stature only improving he could be a top prospect in years to come hopefully. But yes for a CB he is a ways away.

Nordveit is already getting first team Bundeliga experiance, maybe he will be 4th choice next year and So Wenger will not buy in that position. Short term deal would be ideal but those are very very difficult to come by I think.

  53. A

suga3 is SC sol campbell?! if so no thanks! he’s more finished than silvestre, and i’d rather see silvestre in the team than sol! if sol gets a prem club to sign him up he’ll have done very very well

  54. LAzer

Yeah I think Song is in this rythm now of covering that part of the field but as CB seemed very uncomfortable and dangerous in the tackle. Breaking up play in midfield is very very different to covering the oppositions main strike options and defending your goal without conceding fouls.

  55. SUGA3

very good point by LAzer – I would be bricking myself with Song being the last line of defence in the box – we’d be conceding pens left right and centre…

  56. A

was gonna say SUGA, thought you’d gone nuts, apologies!

Sol now would be ridiculous, let alone squeezing 3 years from him!

  57. SUGA3

A is gonna say I’m talking out of the wrong end, but:

    - Kenwyne Jones (permanent deal, scored a good goal this weekend)
    - Adriano (loan)

  58. A

if being realistic as it’s possible to be, then i’d go for

adriano, cole, Bendtner returning from injury (like a new signing)

  59. A

rvn doesn’t have the all round game imo mang. I wouldn’t totally mind pav, though surely we can find better?! forgot about saha, could have him as my third choice actually!

  60. A

also noone even knows if rvn will ever be fit to play at the top level again, would be against it because of his all round game if he was still playing, but having had a serious injury, at his age and not even really made it back into madrid’s matchday squad, no way!

  61. SUGA3

    MG,

out to cause great offence again then?

RvN – apart from it being the blasphemy, he is 33, crocked and his commitment to Arse case would be questionable to say the least ;)

Pavlyuchenko – can’t get a game at Spuds, plus, AA hates his guts (‘he is not my friend’ + WC team talk row)

    Saha – past it…

  62. ManGoonian

Pavluchenko cant get a game coz Arry wont play him, prefering the 7ft freak instead…

Saha aint past it and we could get 6 months out of the horse faced ex manc scum!

Basically, I aint got a clue, although I was quite happy with Saha as an option…

    Night y’all!!

  63. ethangunner

    MG

We will be champions by being the least shittest team then!

    ———————————-
want to wager we are MG ? …
put some money where that large delusional mouth of yours is ?

    :)

ill be on the villains side just to make you feel better …

  64. A

suga i wouldn’t say he’s similar to anyone we’ve got, though obviously not massive. Injury prone is good point, though he only played 5 games less than kenwyne and one more this season!

Jones is ruled out anyways, Wenger himself has thankfully said what i’ve been saying since vp got injured, talking about technical ability and intelligence, so no chance of an out and out big man, though i never thought wenger would be so silly as to do that anyways!

  65. SUGA3

    MG,

my religion (The Great Goon Church) outlaws any cash deals with the evil scum from down the road – nicking Sulzeer was something different…

  66. A

I dunno SUGA, if they hadn’t played him all season then he came to us on the cheap and showed he was better than their three favourite forwards it would be pretty satisfying!

  67. SUGA3

    A,

I was not too impressed with him playing for Spuds – there is a big possibility that he would flop like Keane did at Pool for one simple reason: strikers have it easier playing for Spuds and the like, as the defenders tend to leave them a bit more space, thinking they’re cack…

  68. ethangunner

NO, above the chev’s mate! ..
to win the league you have to beat them !
thats what your telling me ain’t ya ?
how can we WIN THE LEAGUE but not pass the chev’s on points ??

no hedging your bets here mate ..
    you got the bollocks ?!
you certainly know how to run the mouth like you have ..

but do you have the cods ?

    hmmmmmm

  69. A

true SUGA, though pav really hasn’t had a chance, because redknapp would always favour the british players. obviously though would be a risk, he certainly hasn’t set the prem alight, and there is the issue of his and arshavin not getting on

  70. SUGA3

    A,

that last reason should make it a non starter IMO…

I would rather keep AA happy rather than gamble on something which will most probably not work out…

  71. SUGA3

on that note, I’m off to bed…

have to go to work tomorrow – would be out on the piss in PL, if it wasn’t for bloody airport grinding to a halt due to a few inches of snow…

    nite all ;)

  72. ethangunner

    A

i think Saha could do the job , who he be prolific ?

maybe not but i think he would add some experience to our squad , he’s french …
he could be probably no more than 4-5 mil ..

and would probably love the chance to play for a
better team and show us the drive for a season or too to prove it to the fans …
when he gets the chance hes a pretty reliable finisher , and i think with our service he will do more for us than he’s done for everton this season ..

id still prefer D.villa obviously but EPL experience and no need to adapt makes saha
    worth a punt imo .

  73. A

Yeah I agree ethan, not totally against saha, hadn’t thought properly about him, would be decent enough if everton were willing to let him go on account of his contract expiry, though they could always renew it if he’s willing.

villa is unrealistic, he’ll go for silly money when he does. Though if we were talking about unrealistic people I’d rather Benzema, big fan of his.

  74. ethangunner

well if you want current EPL performance we need to go on this table only

    Defoe Tottenham 13
    Drogba Chelsea 13
    Rooney Man Utd 12
    Torres Liverpool 11
    Bent Sunderland 10
    Saha Everton 10
    Agbonlahor Aston Villa 8
    Cole West Ham 7
    Fabregas Arsenal 7
    Van Persie Arsenal 7
    Adebayor Man City 6
    Arshavin Arsenal 6
    Bellamy Man City 6
    Jones Sunderland 6
    Keane Tottenham 6

saha or carlton cole seems the only choices

  75. A

When the window opens it’ll be interesting if city go mad transfer wise. Cassano would be absolutely quality, Aguero too, and be interesting to see how Chiellini would do in the prem if they managed to get him

Yeah I agree ethan, from the prem i can’t see past sahah or cole, going down the list drogba, torres, rooney all totally unrealistic, and wouldn’t want any of the others, not to mention they’d be overpriced

Agbonlahor , MAYBE if villa would ever part with him … but i dont really like him as a player ..i did at first 1 or 2 seasons ago
and cant see wenger being all that interested in him anyhow ..

but you know wenger A , he will look to the cost effectiveness of Europe if he even buys at all ..

he is wanting AA23 to have a goal fest over the next 2 games , then you will hear we dont need anyone in ..

Arsene would surely go for Saha, considering the fact that he is a crock,so that he can squarely lay the blame on injuries,if we win fuckall this season.

Agbonlahor?!?! not in a million years would I ever want him at the club, he’s nowhere near good enough for us! And you’re right, Villa would want silly money.

I agree, Europe is more likely, though I disagree about Arshavin, it’s far from ideal, and a case of making do, even with Bendtner back we’ll be after someone else with VP done.

    anyways, toodles
