And yes, that included the £4mil discount Southampton gave us.
Anyway, lets hope the kids do us proud tonight and that the rejects have another shit game. Wenger also claims the experience the kids get from the Carling Cup is invaluable, he cites Fabregas, Bendtner, Song and Theo as examples of how that benefits the team, I’m not sure what benefit we got on Sunday, I’m not sure what benefit the kids get from playing 3 games in a cup they eventually get knocked out of, but there you go.
I can’t see how bringing them into the first team occasionally is any different, at least if the first team played in the Carling Cup, we would possibly win something, the Chavs will field their top team, shitty will tonight, the Mancs will by the time the final comes, but we won’t and I cannot see how getting beaten eventually will help our youth players develop.
Still let’s hope they go out tonight and stuff the northern chavs, let’s hope they show the first team what a bunch of losers they were against the southern chavs, and let’s hope we see someone in there, that can can step up, because what we have in the first team is not enough to win anything this season.

GMR, I don’t think our defence is so bad personnel wise – I believe it’s more the lack of midfield steel that results in them being under constant pressure. If the midfield had a bit more back bone there wouldn’t be cross after cross coming in the chances of our conceding would be less. It reminds me of what TA06 said in his autobiography that when Petit/Paddy first started they weren’t defending enough as a unit and were not disciplined enough to regain possession when the oppo had the ball. Once they, and the Romford Pele got that sorted out the teams form picked up and our 3rd double came. I saw signs of a more tenacious approach form the midfield against Liege but maybe this slacked off against the Chavs. Admittedly I haven’t been able to watch any of our game since then as it has begun to depress me.

The Gunners are without striker Robin van Persie, who has been ruled out for five months because of an ankle injury.
Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh and Italy Under-21 star Mario Balotelli have been linked with moves to the Emirates.
“We will be out on the market that is for sure – however, we will only make a decision if it suits us,” said Wenger.
Van Persie – who has netted eight times in 11 matches this season – underwent surgery to reconstruct his ankle ligaments following an injury sustained in action for the Netherlands on 14 November.

I remember the Inler transfer speculation pretty well and though the prices varied to nearly twice that amount – ostensibly because he was not for sale and did not want to leave.
Regardless, good though he is he is not remotely ‘World Class’. He currently plies his trade at mid-table Udinese and was not that well rated noted until Wenger took interest. Plus he is one person not three separate players!
I do take your point that we could have bought more experienced players but not without spending a great deal more on transfers and salaries.

I would think the striker we may sign will be either Henry or Gervinho. I think Gervinho is a top player but will be going to ACN. He’s a more skillfull Drogba who has a great dribble on him.

Does Theo really earn £60K a week?? I’d be very surprised if that is true but, if you are right, that is clearly wrong, wrong, wrong.
As for his price – it doesn’t rise anywhere, anymore – we settled at £9million.
He has been unfortunate with injuries and only shown glimpses of brilliance but the jury is still out.
Bischoff was a a gamble – it didn’t pay off but it is no worse than the dozens of signing failures made at top clubs (just look at Liverpool!).
Don’t get me wrong I do think some big names should have been brought in but I also feel players like Song are now much better players for the patience shown and experienced gained.
Buying big name players carries numerous other problems and, as has been seen elsewhere, is no more a guarantee of success. Wenger has got the balance wrong but not by much (without the terrible luck with injuries, and with a little more decent decision-making from the bastards in black, these last 4 seasons might all have yielded trophies).
Wenger can’t live on his past achievements any more. He does not spend money and relies on average players. He has done all he can. Unless we really don’t have any money and he is doing the best he can. But I don’t believe that, as we all seen our financial reports, and they always keep saying he can buy whoever he wants, and we earner 40 mil on players, and earn 3-4 mil each match day. It just doesn’t add up that we don’t have money. Hence Wenger must go.

I bumped into Sammy Samson last night. He (occasionally) drinks in my local. I went up and asked him if he was Kenny Samson’s brother and he said yes.
I told him that Kenny’s picture was the first i received as a junior gunner.
He was quick to tell me that Kenny also played 93 times for England and that he (Sammy) played for Orient.
He is currently scouting for QPR and Fulham. He is a right nice fella and seemed to enjoy talking about football (Even tho he is an Orient fan

BBK, Wenger believes in his players and puts too much faith in them to perform at higher level. Sometimes players in starting 11 take it the wrong way and seem to not care about performing well cos they know they’ll definitely be picked up again. AW should drop a player regardless of his value if he doesn’t perform week in week out and give another player a chance to come and show his worth. It will keep all the players on their toes and will make them work harder to get a place in starting 11.
I remember once Mourinho substituted one of his players after only 27 mins in a game. Eventually, they went on to win that game. In the post match interview, he said that he wanted the team to win and he changed the player cos he wasn’t performing at the level he should be so he substituted him. I never saw this happening at Arsenal.

Bordeaux have warned prospective suitors, including Arsenal, that forward Marouane Chamakh is not for sale.
It is widely believed that long-time admirer Arsene Wenger had been preparing a January transfer bid for the Moroccan, as he looks for a replacement for long-term absentee Robin Van Persie.
Bordeaux chairman Jean-Louis Triaud, however, has refuted any suggestion that Chamakh will be heading to the Emirates in the near future.
“I have no news about that,” Triaud told L’Equipe, when asked about Arsenal’s interest.
“Anyway, for us it is out of the question. Marouane is such a decisive player while we have important challenges in Le Championnat [the French league] and Champions League.”

Manager Arsène Wenger has said that he will take up the incident over the injury to striker Robin van Persie with the Dutch FA, saying that it is wrong that national teams do not look after a club’s assets.
The issue has been further marred due to the mis-diagnosis from the Dutch medical team, who declared that the 26-year-old would be out for 3-6 weeks, before an Arsenal diagnosis revealed the full extent of the injury.

“In every other sport it is the club who decides if the player stays in the national team when he is injured. Only in our sport it is the federation who decides to keep the player if they want to keep the player.
“Why? That means they decide they are in a better situation to treat the player than you. Then they have to pay the player at the end of the month. Then they can decide, that would be logical.
“You can do nothing because they have the rule in their favour. The French Federation decided to keep Diaby for political reasons. They knew from the first day on that he would never play for them but they didn’t want to call another player up.
“So they decided to keep him and make everybody think he would play. The result? He comes back; the next day he tries to have a little run and gets a setback and we have to deal with the consequences.”

Hello Grovers, and Thanks to GMR for summing up how its been for us.
A few seasons ago I saw what AW was doing in the Carling cup and thought these players are gonna kick ass, now all we have is a group of average players who may or may not become world class playing in our starting 11. This is what is wrong with our team now, its full of averageness.
I dont think we will win today as Shitty will be playing a strong side and no matter how good we think the kids are they are not that good.
The only hope we have this year is the FA cup and even that looks a bit dodgy right now.
Song plays too often for my liking. He is a key player now and should be rested like other key players.
Theo and Eddie not in the team is just stupid, they need playing time, they play when it matters most (vs. Chelski, Sunderland in the league) when they haven’t played more than 200 mins all season. Fucking stupid.
Ok we know Wilshere and Eastmond are starting, I wonder how it will work. My guess is 4-2-3-1

IMO to win any cup we would have to beat either one of chelsea, mancs or liverpool over one or two legs that has been the story of recent and we have failed most times in our attempts

The team for tonight has the talent, hopefully Wenger will play with 2 DMs, and we’ll have to rely on the creative individual brilliance of our offensive player.
The aim of this game should be to keep the score low, and try and do a smash and grab off a corner, something along those lines.

IMO he’ll probably buy some make do, second tier striker (like numnuts from Bordeaux) to be a standin for RvP rather than getiing serious quality like Dzeko or Fabiano to stand in AND enhance what we have. And, for me that will be it, one possible purchase, no replacement ‘keeper, no additional CB and certainly no powerhouse CMer……

imo Chamakh would suit us much better because he’s technically superior, more mobile, and his build up play is better, all of which are vital for the central striker in our current system

ddm at the moment I’d say Eduardo would be the most likely to leave if anyone did. He hasn’t regained any sort of real form or consistency since he’s returned from injury, although that’s expected to take a while after such a long lay off. If he hasn’t set the world alight come the summer then I could see him being offloaded

Man Vela’s contract is being extended at the moment, and there are a few years left on it at the moment anyways, I’d be surprised if he was sold after all the effort we’ve gone to to get him at the club

inside i disagree about theo, he’s someone else who gives us something different, his running in behind and pace is very useful, and should suit this formation very well.
imo the only potentially expendable forward is Eduardo, and that’s only if he never gets back to his clinical best
ethan now VP is out, potentially for the season we could do with another body in there, in case Bendtner gets injured again once he’s back and a regular in the central role, or anyone else gets injured.
It’s Bendtner’s height, strength, and aerial ability that makes him valuable imo rather than his youth, he offers something none of our other forwards do.
A, ok I see, he remains the only from the list who hasn’t got a contract extension. Theo’s ‘Englishness’ counts in his favour I feel, he seems to be the poster boy for the club

A – Theo gives the team as much as Eboue. Dont get me wrong, I thought the world of Theo when we signed him and really thought he would make it. BUT the guy cant do a step over, cant cross, he forgets the ball behind him half the time, he has no skill to pass players. If football and being a winger was about pave then Usain Bolt would be the best winger around.

I disagree inside – Theo makes very intelligent runs through the middle, and in this system starting out wide I expect him to get into double figures for goals this season. He isn’t a winger, imo people make a mistake referring to him as that. Just because he has similarities in appearance to Lennon doesn’t mean that’s his role. In my eyes wide right he’ll be a goalscoring midfielder in our current system, making runs inside and through the middle, as freddie was and did back in the day.
Theo will really stretch teams, which is something that not many other players do, always coming deep to get the ball rather than running in behind

I really rate them, especially Ribery, and they’d be a slight improvement on those players, but massive money for a slight improvement wouldn’t make any sense! I’d rather we spent money on individually inferior players to those two, but in central midfield, or defence, who would make a much greater improvement overall to the team

Both Dzeko and Chamakh would be a riot in our team but Dzeko has his heart set on a move to Milan besides he would cost at least 20mil. Chamakh may not score as many goals but he comes at a fraction of the cost. I think at ths stage in their respective development Chamakh offers more in work rate, link up play and therefore represent better value

inside the new system is tailor-made for theo, and it should suit him down to a tee. If he doesn’t do it in this system then he never will! He’s neither a central forward, nor a wide midfielder, so 4-4-2 really wasn’t good for him. In the new system he can play as a wide forward, which should give him the freedom to really shine, and get in behind the opposition time and time again. Still no point debating it now because only time will tell!

Really worried that a bad result may interupt Songs performances as choping and changing him from Midfield to defence is not ideal.
Perhaps Bartley will start with Song in midfield but I doubt it.
On a whole it looks like a team that will retain possesion and play neat football.
Hopefully we will see Vela coming to life and Wilsere and Ramsey supporting him well.

I don’t believe we are too far away from truly competing for trophies we just need that that striker who can get the ball to stick in the final third more often than not. Because that is in my view our main problem. It’s all breaking down up there, most of our attacks are breaking down then we either get done on the break or from the quick ball long ball over the defense. When we defend it seems that we are always back tracking when we need to be proving that barrier that allows us to attack the ball full on.

The 4-1 was completely different, we had loads of very good chances in the first half hour, cut through them easily but missed all the chances, then they scored one, and they created loads of chances against us and cut through us very easily!
I don’t Ray, I’d be furious if we became such a small club that we considered the League cup even 1/10 as important as the league, let alone having equal emphasis! Leave the League Cup to the teams who have no hope of accomplishing anything in any of the proper competitions.

In terms of creating we had way more crosses from the same position as the first two goals, and two free kicks from a similar distance. They beat us 3-0 because they scored 3 goals and we scored 0, but in terms of the creating chances to score the goals we were hardly thrashed
We could play Chelsea ten times and lose nine of them and yet you would still get delusional fans analysing each game and saying “well if we scored then or didn’t concede just before half time we would have won”.

Chipo I dunno about someone to compete, because central defences are build on partnerships, and developing an understanding with each other, so players can’t come in and out of the team or it’ll weaken the unit. I’d like someone around Vermaelen’s age though, who is at a level to come in should someone get injured, and will develop and take over from Gallas to partner Vermy eventually. Though in a world cup year it might be tough to find someone willing to sit on the bench most of the time.
It is really odd with Senderos, he seemed to have worked really hard in training and gotten himself ahead of Silvestre in the pecking order for a little bit, gotten himself back into the reckoning, but now has disappeared suddenly.

he was on the right side of the goal if he had decided to shoot with his right foot he wouldnt have taken more than one extra touch b4 getting his shot off. but he decided to take the ball to his left foot with too many touches and obviously being his inside foot as he was positioned on the right side of goal he was exposed to a tackle.

If wenger wants a striker..then I think he should go in for Pavlychenko…
Here is why
1. He can link up with Arshy..maybe that will help his spirits…
We would then have 2 players with fire in their bellies that would want to make up for world cup disappointment….
He is tall and gives us something different, I not sure how fast he is..but surely he cant be slower than Eduardo….
He is already in London as well,its perfect….
There are other options but we wont get them
1. Fabiano(Sevilla wont sell him in January)
2. Chamakh(Bordeaux will not sell him in January)
3. Carltonn Cole(West ham will not sell their best player when they arein relegation battle

6. Huntelaar(too slow plus he has now scored for Milan so they might warm up to him)
Pavlychenko is the best “available” solution its either that or wait til summer to get Chamakh

gotta disagree Ja, gotta keep the same formation. I agree though, we need cover for Bendtner when the window opens, Pavlchenko would be pricy though and isn’t THAT good. Vela can play the central role, or Arshavin, I’m not a fan of Eduardo there though. Chamakh because he’s a physical striker who could also play wide would be a very good option, and although Bordeaux say they won’t sell him that won’t be true, they just won’t give him away, he’d still be cheaper than if his contract wasn’t running out.

The way we play now relies on fullbacks providing width…so it would be no different to what we do now in that respect…
our wide forwards always drift in anyway…Theo is only one who goes to the byline sometimes….
The big difference would be that arshavin or nasri woud be central….rather than on the wings…
nasri is very ineffective on the wing…but if he or Arshavin plays in the hole….they can go left or right and shoot to goal more often…
When nasri is on the wing..he always slows down and cuts in..its so predictable….in the centre he would be more unpredictable…Arshavin as well.
Raddy Ben Arfa is still very very talented, he just has attitude problems at Marseille, he could still become a superb player.
Yeah ja, chelsea use that formation because they have incredibly powerful players, so just use a battering ram to go through the middle of teams, the opposite of what we do! We need players out wide, because we need the space, we couldn’t start off narrow. The wide players can drift in as they do, but certainly not start there, or it would close everything up.

Ideally it would be in goal or DM. Also when you buy a DM or GK you save yourself from changing formation or building a team to suit them.

Hope Merida protects the ball well tonight. He’s playing left sided forward and that means he can’t drop back too deep to receive the ball, which means he’ll be recieving it under pressure, something he’s struggled with at times.
Defensively he suits left forward, but in terms of his offensive game he suits a deeper position.

Forget tonight, we had a couple of poor results lately, namely Sunderland and Chelsea, and it must have made AW realise we need some bigger, stronger players as we just can’t fight it out. We have plenty of skill and to be fair, if we had more power upfront we could have got at Chelsea. I think AW will try to buy now as its clear we just haven’t got a team capable of winning the league…For all AW’s comments about elief, he knows we can’t. He can’t exactly come oout and admit it, but his comments about buying tell a different story. I still think 3/4 new additions and perhaps letting a few go would be good for the team. We gotta make sure now that we buy in the window, and someone good enough to make a difference to keep us in the top 3 to keep the confidence high.

Tonights result was disappointing, maninly that we just didnt get into a groove and didn’t give the best account of ourselves. Citeh are just not as good as the sum of their parts, but still clearly light years better (or really that could be stronger) than our youngsters. Our more experienced players tonight all had off days, except Silvestre as he’s always rubbish. Perhaps they just didn’t have the confidence that they thought they could win.
Also, I’ve never heard LJW get slated so much as tonight? He’s this, that, slow. Jeez, He’s like 17 or so. Did’nt seem crap to me in the Emirates Cup games when he was MOM twice in a row!

Arsene is looking like a man out of phase with what is happening in today’s football and is leaving himself precious little wriggle-room. By adopting his present strategy of not buying established top quality players and relying so heavily on bringing youngsters through he may have improved the financial balance of the club but I have this horrible feeling that his admittedly high ideals are catching up with him. The last few weeks have been a wake-up for me and it seems very evident to these eyes that it aint working. Put it this way who would you rather have Dzeko or Bendtner? That’s the kind of quality we need, I think we have aimed our sights a little too low.

We lost to ManU and Chelsea in the same week last season because our defending was shit, our midfield weak and we couldn’t finish.

Liam Lawernce will have a hayday aginst Traore the weekend. Man we are going to get seriously bullied in midfield and up front. Shawcross and Faye will bust EDS, let alone what they will do to a disintrested Arshavin.
We will need to be strong but yet play our intregate football at a faster pace than against Chelsea and be more expansive. The only real performance of note where we took apart physical teams were against Utd at home when we beat em 2-1 and aginst Milan away. In both games we played at seriously high tempos with fast passing and good closing down, we need that agin the weekend not this standing off shit where we let narrow teams play straight down the middle of us.

Chippo, we lost our two main strikers etc, we sound worst than Spurs saying that in London Chelsea are superior to us because they have a better squad and can cope with losses of player and so beat us 3-0, we have a superior squad to Spurs and beat them 2-0 when they were missing players, its just the way the EPL is gone you have five tiers, Top 2 Chelsea and Utd,mediorc us,pool and citeh then you lower down to Spurs,Villa,Everton overacheivers who fall away towards end of season and then the relegation dog fight teams.
In a perfect world our first 11 is as competitive as Utd and Chelseas but how often will you have your first 11, it would appear in our case never
Chipo I agree he was a little rusty, but this is something different. If the game doesn’t go our way we whimper quietly to the whistle. In Ice hockey (I know a strange one to choose) there are people who’s job it is to go out and have a fight when your team is loosing, pick it up with a bit of aggression. While I’m not saying we should go that far, we do need someone to be that spark and we don’t have it.

I don’t know how long people can defend wenger. The man has lost the plot!! At the beginning of the season a lot of fans were saying this is his last chance. He has already blown it!! Once again he has failed to bring in the players we need. We need a new goalkeeper, A rock in midfield and a powerful striker who has a proven gaol scoring record. We can’t rely on van persie he is to injury prone!! We have no cover the centre backs!!

I agree with you Sharkey, I do remember when Flamini came on and nearly drilled Nani into the third row, that was great. I guess I’m just frustrated because we don’t have that smeone.
Fabianski should start on Saturday. He made two top class saves, especially the one right at the end, claimed some dangerous crosses (only fluffed one) and make the right decisions (retreating to goal when bellamy was through and then stopping whore scoring.)
He is a class above Almunia if you ask me.

I was not expecting to win the last 2 games, i’ve got to admit. The squad is lightweight, so there is no use kidding myself coz its The Arsenal thing to do.
I won’t settle for near enough is good enough.

Disappointong perfoprmance last night even if I didn;t expet a win. Complete lack of cohesion from start to finish.
Traore put up a decent fight, but the ref fucked him over with that yellow.
My ‘cousin’ Song had his worst game in a long time, some decent moments, but a lot of bad ones.
Wilshire and Merida both strggled badly for me…and as taem they all held onto the ball too long, over passed it, and kept ruinnig into blind alleys.
Was Eboue really playing RB..?? Eastmond left me completely unconvinced.
There also seemed to be two Silvestre’s out there, one average one, and a one legged one eyed one.
We did well to stay in the game as long as we did.
