Under 17′s, how can you tell? Seagulls everyone or Monopoly!

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So yesterday I found myself watching Switzerland vs Colombia in the under 17′s world cup, Switzerland won 4 nil, the Colombians were favourites but lost a man early on when they conceded a penalty and just lost the plot.

Then I watched Spain, who were favourites, get tonked by Nigeria the hosts. Then I thought, will any of these step up and become world stars? There was a Swiss player with a very Arabic sounding name that looked classy, a few DM’s and a Nigerian forward, but no one really grabbed me.

When I watched the under 21′s in the summer, Ozil (or whatever his name is) stood out but they were all raving about a Swedish forward who I’ve never heard of since.

My point is how many of these kids will make it, how many will become good then want to go back to their homeland because of pressure, and how many will stay in our team and make us unbeatable for a decade like the scousers were and the Mancs are?

Arsene Wenger has been with us long enough to see if his project will work, we have a crop of young ‘uns coming through that look good, time will tell if they step up, but it’s like owning all the houses in Monopoly, unless someone lands on them, there’s no point in collecting them all.

Now that may sound like an Eric Cantona moment but it has concerned me for sometime, let’s see if Fran Merida stays, he is a great example, Cesc is another, if they all hang around, it could pay big dividends, if they don’t, it could prove a waste of time.

Another example was Lupoli and Bendtner, they were banging them in for fun, and Lupoli was the star, what happened to him?

If you all get a chance to watch Nigeria vs Switzerland try, then take a look and try and guess who’ll be the next superstar and whether or not they’ll make it.

The last time we signed under 17′s sensations one was called Senderos and the other Vela.

Oh and spare a thought for fat Frank who strained a muscle having a tom-tit on a private jet, I bet the chavs have him fit though, I bet he won’t be out for 3 months like he would had he been at Arsenal.

Have a great day Grovers, the next 2 posts are on Pedro!

Pedro I never said Hleb was better than Ronaldo, I said he would be much better for our system than Ronaldo would, because his ball retention is far superior to Ronaldo’s, and that’s what our game was built on then! People think far too simplistically, how good a player is perceived to be is often largely down to the system and manager a player plays in. Obviously top players are adaptable to different systems, but how well they do varies greatly from system to system, you only have to look at the likes of gerrard, lampard, messi, ronaldo and how their club and international performances differ

i’m with u A! i also preferred Hleb to Ronaldo for Arsenal. I thought he was a gr8 player, its a pity he left us.

    gunnergetyou – are you kidding?
drogba is a bit of a cheat, sure, but kicking someone like that when they cant even expect it is cowardly and FAR worse than diving. It reminds me of the way gary neville played against reyes
I had nothing against evans before the weekend, but he’s just scum to me now.
People should be outraged that he’s gotten away with it. Imagine if an arsenal player had done that?

  3. gunnergetyou

i know what ur saying davi, but with drogba you never know if he is really injured or just ‘cheating’. most of the time he brings it on himself, thats why i have no sympathy for him.

  4. Davi

Thats fair enough mate, but to me its not about sympathy for drogba really, i just want them to punish evans, and actually be consistent when they go after players.
You know, they go after eduardo for diving (completely out of the blue, seeing as players have been diving for ages), but then ignore rooney’s dive against us, or carlton cole,s dive against us, or all the other dives that have taken place in between.

Part of me wants to just keep kicking utd when theyr down, but I think it’s justifiable. I mean adebayor got a retrospective ban, and what he did was on the same level as evan’s kick.

This is a debate that’s been had many times on many non-Arsenal site, don’t know why I’m being vilified for it.
I just don’t think Wenger wouldn have made Ronaldo the player he is

    ——————

Sorry to bring the debate back…seems like all the good debates happn early in the morning.

Man Untd was heavily structured round Ronaldo. And SAF managed Ronaldo well enough that he was able to handle the pressure of the team and thus Win the Ballon’d OR.

Would Wenger have managed Ronaldo to win the Ballon d’OR?

    I dont think so.

That being said Ronaldo would have excelled at Arsenal not just because he’s a great player which he is. But because he works his nuts off as well.

Lets stop Thierry bashing… and stop Ronaldo praising. Instead I suggest we talk about Bendtner and how low the telegraph has sunk in reporting the fact he is boning royalty.

    ====================

Well they are desperate to report the boy has learnt how to score somehow?

I think we could do with a few of our player running at defences the way arshavin does, especialy because teams have figured out our passing game and its much easier to dribble(atleast u get a free kick) than pass in a crowded area.

  8. choy

I think Arshavin has given us a more direct style of play, he lets fly from almost everywhere, and the other players nowadays really don’t fack around the opposition box.

  9. Mr B

True True…. David, Davi… bit confused now. I dont know but I cannt help but admire our attacking options but ill wait till they are fit. I mean Arsh on the left, Theo on the right, Nasri and RoSicky behind them, FAB4 suppling through the middle. Good times for arsenal fans. Even if we dont win anything we are a pleasure to watch.

  10. Davi

Mr B – I cant stand the thought of theo walking back into the side. Hes so inconsistent but he always gets a free pass into the 1st team. Vela on the other hand, who seems to perform well everytime he starts, and never really does anything wrong, always has to sit out. Merida is another who I feel deserves more opportunity compared to theo.

How can you compare Ronaldo and Hleb? One shoots for fun, and the other seldom does. How can anyone not think Ronaldo could play for us? It’s not worth even imagining, there’s more chance of Eboue becoming our top scorer.

  12. Davi

Ronaldo would have developed differently under arsene wenger, but would have been successful.
He used to go to training with weights attached to his legs to improve his strength and power. He is as dedicated as they come.
I dont like his attitude on the pitch, but you have to respect him as a talented player who really has worked as hard as he could to maximise his potential.
If wenger had managed him, ball retention would have been more of a focus, whereas at utd, they got him to focus on improving his powerful shooting and his physique.
There’s no doubt he would have had the talent to fit perfectly into arsenal’s system, and if he came into our team now he might appear fairly similar to arshavin except ronaldo is more selfish (and better overall) with his shooting, whereas arshavin has much superior vision and teamwork.

  13. GoonerGod

I haven’t read any of this thread (sorry)… But hearing fat Frank is out for 3 weeks is great. Those Chelsea wankers never seem to get long term injuries.
I would never wish pain upon anyone, but we have been totally screwed over for the last 3 seasons with injuries… and Frankie having 3 weeks off is nothing compared to Rosicky, Eduardo (long term)… We actually see Clichy being out for 2 months as a short term injury. Nasri’s broken bone, pah… He’s only been out for 4 months…
One question I would like to ask, or debate is does everyone think our boys are strong enough to sustain a season long attack?
Do we think Rosicky, Eduardo and Walcott are fit/strong enough to get back in the game?
They all play in a comeback fixture, then need a month off.
I personally think we’re too lightweight.

  14. GoonerGod

    Mike, I really hope you’re right…
We’re due to have all our players back (allegedly) by the end of this month. If we do, and we can stay injury free, we have a great chance.
What do you think of our strikers?

  15. gnarleygeorge9

    bnsb

As much as it appears to be looking great for the Ashburton Grove fixture, I still won’t rule out smoke screen/bullshit.

But in reality, they are an aging squad so who knows. 6 points from the next 2 fixtures would be gifts from the Gods :P

  16. gnarleygeorge9

I bet Chelski are in some small way a bit nervous about the up coming fixture after the big Sunderland game. But untill Sunderland is done & dusted (3 points) I have no interest in the Chelski fixture. We must plot the down fall of Sunderland before thinking about the future. It should be one week @ a time, show respect to our next enemy. Destroy them then, take up the next challenge. That is how Cups are won

  17. Pat

Turner, Jones, and Cattermole out for Sunderland

Bosingwa, Cashley, Lampard, Drogba out for Chelsea if rumors are to be believed.

We can win both these games

  18. gnarleygeorge9

I know the Champions League is a big thing for Real Madness & Bracalonely, maybe coz their domestic league is so irrelevant, but to win the Premier League is the ultimate sporting Cup in football terms, then the World Cup

  19. Geoff

Gnarley, I’m watching New Zealand vs Bahrain at the moment, I can’t think why either of them would want to play in the world cup!
