Unravelling the medical nightmare…

August 12, 2009

‘Well, you have to admit,  we did have a bad run of injuries…’

I feel like getting a banner of that excuse to go next to the ‘In Arsene We Trust’ one that is prominently on display at the Emirates. It’s been the bog standard excuse for failure for near enough 5 years now.  So I thought it was about time I conducted some research into the problem to establish exactly what hell is going on at the Grove.

All my research has been aided by a professional sports scientist who works for a well known Ruggerball club in London. I haven’t gone into serious detail because to be quite frank, it’s all a little bit too complicated and I would imagine it would be a little boring first thing in the morning… so here goes.

First things first… stop blaming the medical team. The medical team deal with the injuries that are handed to them… there is nothing they can do to prevent and injury… that job falls directly at the feet of the fitness coach. Colin Lewin and Gary O’Driscoll are exempt here.

The head of fitness goes by the name of Tony Colbert. He looks like a drill sergent and boasts the same qualifications as my friend…

His resume states:

‘Tony ensures that players can withstand what is always a highly rigorous season for first-team regulars at the Club’

and..

‘Tony worked with a range of sportsmen before joining the club and is an expert in football-specific fitness. He has also delivered lectures and developed a range of fitness training courses for health and fitness organisations – and has managed various gyms and fitness centres’

I am chuffed to bits that the best Arsenal.com could manage when advertising their head of fitness is that he has managed fitness centres and he has worked with a range of sportsmen. I need names people… I also thought it was interesting to read that he ensures players can withstand a rigorous season… because from where I’m sitting, that is clearly not the case.

Apparently there are a few categories of injury… impact injuries that are non-preventable, like, say, the Eduardo break. Then there are soft tissue and wear and tear injuries… which in the main, are preventable with good fitness coaching.

Lets have a look at the problems we have suffered.

Abou Diaby: Spends more time in the medical centre than Colin Lewin’s medical bag. Consistently injured for the past 2-3 seasons.

Robin Van Persie: Although he put in a good stretch last year, he managed to spend the previous 3 years out injured for large chunks of the season.

William Gallas: Again, he had a good year last season… but has previously spent a long time out and even complained about the staff and how they handled his injuries.

Rosicky: Do I even need to go into detail here?

The reason I raise this important question about injuries is because it is very important. A good team will struggle to cope with any more than 3 key player loses for any amount of time. The last time we went close in the Premiership… the key loss for the team wasn’t Eduardo… it was Rosicky, Sagna and Flamini. We lost them at key points in the season and never recovered.

Last season I appreciate we were out of it pretty early on… but losing Cesc for four months, Rosicky for the year, Eduardo nearly all of the season and Nasri proved detrimental.

So the question is, why do our players get injured more than any other teams? It won’t be our training ground… the pitches are perfect, it won’t be the matches… because everyone else plays them… and I refuse to blame luck… becuase Villa, Chavski, United and Liverpool seem to manage better than us. So what is it? What are our fitness staff doing so wrong?

Why when Rosicky and Eduardo return from long periods out do they pick up countless injures for months? I can appreciate that your muscles will be weaker… but that didn’t hinder Essiens recovery from cruciate damage… he was out for 8 months, came back and stayed back. Why are our players different? Why is it that when John Terry or Christaino Ronaldo get ruled out for a month, they are back in 3 weeks… yet our players are supposed to be out for 3 weeks and come back 4 months later? How can the youngest team in the Premiership suffer the most with injuries… that seems illogical?

It leads me to one conclusion… our players returns are not being managed correctly. Compare Tony Colberts CV to that of Manchester Uniteds fitness coach Tony Strudwick or Real Madrid’s Valter Di Salvo and you start to wonder how qualified our man is. He does afterall, hold one of the best jobs in world football and arguably… he’s not doing a very good job.

This isn’t something I feel people from either side of the AKB fence can dig me out over… it’s an excuse everyone points to… How many more years do we have to suffer the same problems? How many more times must we witness the same miserable injury patterns before someone at Arsenal addresses the issue? I ask, because it only seems to be us in the top 4 who suffer every single season… and this year things look no different and we haven’t even kicked a ball yet.

Great value transfer on cards for £8… could be what we need?

August 11, 2009

So when the Gooner review contacted me about reviewing their DVD of the 2008-09 season… I thought, jeez… that’s like asking the Iraqi people to review the ‘Magic moments of the Gulf War’ DVD special… why would I want to review the torment of last year… then I read on…

It’s for Charity!

Hooray! The Willow Foundation take 100% of the net profits… you could say the Willow foundation are profiteering from our misery, but that would be silly.

So… on that note, I got down to work. Reviewing a DVD is a pretty scary thing… I’ve never read a film review, I’ve never read the television pages… and I hate music reviews. So please bear with me on this one…

Here goes…

Paul Kaye opens the show with the line,

‘Sit down, relax and spark up a big red and white bifter…’

…that I did… I had my piece of crap scarf Arsenal gifted me rolled into a zig zag and I was on my way.

The format of the show is basically the top ten talking points of the year… there’s no video footage of goals and players… but there is plenty of opinion… it’s like watching a video version of a comments section.

So what did I think? Well… I was pleasantly surprised. Real fans giving real opinions. I don’t know why I thought it was going to be sugar coated because it wasn’t… you had your AKB’s… mostly people on the Arsenal pay roll… you had realists… mostly fans, supporter association members and celebs… and you had your experts, journo’s, ex-players, etc… It was a really good mix… mostly because they kept the AKBish talk to a minimum.. it was like listening in on a typical gooner convo you’d hear at the pub or in the stadium.

Tom Watt really rankled me… he is so AKB it hurts. He said…

‘If you think Jack Wilshere is going to be the player you hope… do you buy a player who plays in his position?’

Ok Tom… let me just inform you that we purchased Nasri (21) at the start of last season and we purchased Arshavin (27) in Jan… we’ve also got Theo (21) out wide plus Carlos Vela (20), Bendtner and Diaby (<-Snigger)… plenty of players who are competing with him… your argument is invalid. If that is your argument… why don’t we just get rid of the rest of the youth set up… and only have one age group until they all make it? Dumb idea… of course it is… like your argument for not bolstering the squad with proper players. The cream rises to the top in football… you shouldn’t have to clear the pathway artificially… that’s type of culture has go us into this mess in the first place.

He gets worse as it goes on… I don’t think I’ve ever seen ass kissing like it? I felt uncomfortable at one point… like I was watching something I shouldn’t… It’s sad when someone has job insecurities so bad they forgo their opinion to tow the company line… At least Shovell was true to his opinion despite being on wage bill.

Paul kaye said something I connected with,

‘It came to February and I thought we still in with a chance… but that’s because I’m a fucking idiot’

Hilarious.

There was quite a bit about the horror moment when a shareholder called Silvestre ‘geriatric’. I thought it was a bit rich listening to people defend Wenger on this one… he pretty much tells any player who hits the age of thirty they are geriatric by only offering a one year deal… why would he get offended when people slag off Silvestre for being old when #1 He is old. #2 He got a 2 year deal. Yes 1 more year than Bobby, Freddie, Ray, Dennis and Gilberto were offered.

I don’t want to continue to give away the good parts of the DVD… but know this my friends… this is an effing good DVD and considering the proceeds of the sale go to the Willow foundation, I think you should purchase it. It’s a proper season review put together by the people who matter… the fans!

So don’t act like Wenger, stick your hand in your pocket… pull out £8… send it over to the Gooner review and enjoy that warm feeling of doing something charitable and getting something nice in return! Like when you are on holiday and you give a kiss to the monster girl standing in the corner… at least this wont cost you your dignity!

On another note. I shared a taxi with, surprisingly… with a taxi driver. His son, who is 7 years old had apparently just signed up to the hammers for 4 years from his 8th birthday onwards. I asked him whether Arsenal had come in for him and he told me that they had… but the training on offer at West ham suited him more for now as they do it 3 times a week. He also told me that an old friend of his was heading up scouting for kids at Arsenal and that when he went to see him, Arsenal had 7 dossiers on his boy! Crazy or what? The guy said if Arsenal are interested in 4 years time, that’s where he’ll be going… Young guns… eat your heart out…

I find it amazing we have 6 dossiers on a 7 year old… but apparently there are no 23 year old defensive midfielders with tenacity, mobility and skill on the market… it’s a crazy world we live in folks.

Someone made an interesting point yesterday about player transfers… shouldn’t the manager know what he needs player wise before preseason? Wenger like to tell us that he must assess what he has in training first… well as far as I can see, he’s got all the same players he had from three months ago minus Kolo, Ade, Rosicky and Nasri… why does it take a preseason to tell him what he is lacking? Or did he have every intention of hitting the August 31st sales all along?

Finally… on the financial doping of the market. If you have a car worth £5k… and I offer £2.5k for it… you refuse that £2.5k and sell the car to another person for £5k… who has got the value of the car wrong? Wenger has consistently talked about the value of players being out of kilter with reality… well for me, maybe his expectations of value are the problem? I had countless discussions with people about the value of Alonso last year… people were claiming he wasn’t worth £15mill… now he’s gone for £30mill. Ok, that price has been slightly inflated due to the Madrid effect, but clubs like Madrid will ALWAYS be flush with cash… and there will always be a new sheikh on the block willing to buy players up like toys… plus, great players will go up in value until they are 28.

Right, on that note, I’m off to upload this DVD onto you tube! Have a rip roaring day Grovers!

Have Arsenal football club lost their ambition?

August 10, 2009

Add to the team now or be lucky to stay in the top 4. And stop bragging about losing as if we should be grateful.

After watching the Chavs and Mancs grind out a bore draw yesterday, I thought, well they haven’t improved, good. But at least they haven’t gone backwards and I think we have, with Nasri and Rosicky out and with Kolo and Ade gone we have gone the wrong way.

If he bought a centre back and a big midfielder in now, then we could win the league, that’s all we’re lacking, even Paddy in there would do the job. If however Wenger is determined to stick with what he has then please persevere with Wilshere and Ramsey and not Song, Denilson and Eboue, at least you can see those two will make it.

He also seems obsessed with Numchucks, I really think he would be a great signing, but do we really need another striker? We need a midfielder and a centreback, the whole world knows it except the boss.

Someone said yesterday they didn’t realise we had already lost to Celtic and Everton yet, well if we sign no-one soon, you can add City and ManU to that list, then our season will be over, in September.

That’s how confident I feel, and with all the money we have to spend, that’s all bollocks.

The latest boast is we got to 2 semi finals, well in the ECL we lost our group, beat a shit Roma side on penalties and a poor Villareal and then got humiliated by the Mancs, and the FA Cup saw us all the way to the semis without meeting a premiership side and when we did, we didn’t play our best player and lost, and what, that’s our new benchmark? Please!

If someone out there can tell me selling two and buying none makes sense when we were already two short, I’ll listen, but don’t call me negative, that title’s already been taken…

Have a great week Grovers! And no bitching today, that’s for the other blogs.

We lost, so what, this squad is good enough.

August 9, 2009

Sorry for the delay, Pedro isn’t around. So this post is one to counter my previous, some say negative ones.

We lost, and Song and Eboue all played, we don’t need to strengthen in that area, but we do need another French speaking forward, that’s vital.

Had Denilson played though he would have been awesome, check out his stats.

Everything is rosey and I’m happy with the squad, don’t forget Arsene knows and although we have £40 million in the bank doing nothing, we really don’t need to buy, so please, no speculating.

Next up Everton, and I’m looking forward to seeing Senderos play and happy that if we get £7 million for him it will get added to the £40 million we got from Ade and Kolo.

Kolo it seems left because he was bored but Ade left because the fans didn’t show him any respect, Arsene said that not me, but without Arsene we wouldn’t be where we are today, so I for one am grateful, you lot though should be ashamed, not loving Ade, how can you not love Ade?.

Balanced enough? Don’t judge the boss now, do that in 2 years. That’s what he asked for.

Have a great day Grovers, now you know why I don’t do match reports.

Celtic the barrier for Champions league football, do you believe in this squad?

August 8, 2009

I know someone that does! Well let’s look at this game first, forget it’s Celtic, on paper it will be like playing West Brom in the FA Cup, but history will show us that when they play English teams it becomes like a regular domestic cup game, in short, although it shouldn’t, it could go either way.

Let’s look at who we’ve lost first from the first team.

Rosicky, Nasri, Kolo and Adebayor. Now although we didn’t have Rosicky last year that’s still 3 players missing.

So who have we bought in? Vermaelen. Does that make us stronger than last season? Of course it doesn’t, and it wasn’t last year, it was 3 months ago, you’ve seen pre season, has Song or Denilson got better? No of course not, has the defence? No of course it hasn’t, I like Vermaelen, I think he’s Keownesque but he couldn’t out jump a 40 year old Barnet player, and height and winning high balls was the problem, so we haven’t addressed it have we???

Anyway, who cares, we are richer than we were in May and as Wenger told someone who said he has been supporting Arsenal for 50 years and last year was a disaster. ‘did we get into the Champions league semi final before?’

If getting humiliated in a semi final of the champions league is what you judge success on Arsene, I guess we should be grateful, me, I like to win, and if that means spending money we have on players we need then that’s what we should do, almost to a supporter we all say we need a centre back monster and a defensive midfielder as Denilson is not good enough.

Don’t wait to get knocked out of the ECL until you realise you are wrong, act now before the season is over. Dramatic maybe, but true. Looking good in pre season against shit teams tells us nothing.

We play Valencia tonight, I don’t see the point, but if you can get David Villa and that big centre back it’s a good plan.

Enjoy today Grovers, next week it begins…   …At last!

Maybe Wilshere’s success will up Theo’s performances.

August 7, 2009

So after Jackie boys double man of the match performances at the Emirates Cup at the weekend, I wonder if it brings out the little green man in him. I hope it does, Theo for me could be the Michael Owen of the 2010’s, he has what Owen had in spades, he has been put on the wing to develop but Owen went straight in the lone striker role.

When Theo played in the middle for England in the summer, he was woeful, so up front for us ahead of Bendtner, Arshavin, Robin and Eduardo? I’m not so sure.

I also believe Numchucks is on his way so there’s another one ahead of him. Yes I said Numchucks!

I believe Theo will be played as a winger again, or as we used to have in the old days, an inside forward, that used to be the number 8, inside right or the number 10, inside left.

In fact when I played, no one wanted the number 10 shirt, the number 9 was the big one, I think 10 became fashionable when Maradona came along.

Hodgson seems to think we will be back in for Hangeland and Wenger is sending signals that we will go to the wire on transfers, unfortunately he is only talking defender and forward, so as I see it, Song and Denilson are in again, Rosicky and Diaby will be injured all season, so here we go again.

I believe that he is proposing 4-3-3 to protect his favourites and it will negate his need for a DM, fine, it that’s his disguise, but we still need a big centre back, our defensive frailties have been there for all to see all pre-season, if he can’t see that then he’s the only one. I would still bring Paddy back, he’ll sort the kids out.

I found out today that Ronnie Biggs is an Arsenal fan, well welcome to the list, we all know that Osama is also a gooner. I would appreciate people not sending him get well messages on this site today, I am an honest man and he wasn’t, I’ve had to work for my family, he didn’t, if anyone wants to debate his new found status as the modern day Robin Hood go and find a Ronnie Biggs website, don’t do it on here.

Sorry about that Grovers but I’ve already seen one site this morning sanctifying him, it’s a shame the train driver who died only got £25 for his trouble. If anyone wants to show some respect, show it to his family, maybe he was a Gooner too.

Have a great day Grovers, today could be the day we make a signing, tomorrow we play Valencia, don’t they have someone we’re after at the back?

Nunchucks next in but where is that midielder and that centreback?

August 6, 2009

Morning all, I believe we will sign Wenger’s preferred striker today and that his club will take the money rather than have a disaffected player going for nothing next season. What worries me is we have not signed the beast we need in midfield, let alone the centre back we need.

Why were we not in for Aquiliani? Why are we not after Diarra? Why have we not re-signed Paddy?

Some suggest we still have no money, well if we don’t, we were massively overstocked last season then, weren’t we?

So if he is being a good housekeeper this season, was he a bad one last?

All our ex players are urging him to buy two more players, we saw in the Emirates Cup we still need two players and I fear if we don’t do so quickly, we will be out of the Champions league and the Premiership by September, then we’ll be screwed.

It was clear for the whole world to see, we are still suspect at the back, nothings changed there, we need to act now, one whilst we still have the money and two whilst we still can, two more Arsene and we’ll be world beaters, don’t do it and this season will be like last, lots of goals, unfortunately they will be at both ends.

There are players out there, they are available, you have the money, do it before it’s too late boss, please.

I am one of the few that think Nunchucks will be a great signing, so Arsene, I agree with you, but we don’t need a forward as much as we need a DM and a CB, really boss, we don’t.

Have a great day Grovers, I think Pedro has written some crackers this week, so well done that man.

£30million move imminent… Ponderos nears exit… Faziwho?

August 5, 2009

… and a very good morning to you all!

Day 3, and Geoff has informed me via pigeon courier that due to a lack of summer signings he has taken it upon himself to do some pro bono scouting work for the club. At the moment he is tracking a 12 year old suit case stitcher from the Himalayas, I’ll report back on his findings.

Nawang Topkay insists he can replace Senderos.

Nawang Topkay insists he what it takes.

So, this morning we have awoken to the heart breaking news that AC Milan are looking to sign our dear captain; Cesc Fabregas, for £31million. There is no source bar the Sun newspaper… and no real effort in their valuation. If you could get someone to buy your paving slab for £25million, why would you then sell your diamond for £31million? Cesc is on a 54 year contract, so if Milan have dreams of luring Cesc… I think they should firstly up their bid to a number that isn’t insulting and secondly… look somewhere else.

In other less exciting news… we’ve canned off talks with Numbchucks. Arsene Wenger believes £15million for a player entering the last year of his contract is a little extortionate… I’d have to agree. Especially as it appears we don’t need him.

‘In five months, Chamakh will be free to talk to any club and Bordeaux won’t get anything. It’s over. I’m in no rush.’

At least we know who our next striker is likely to be, eh? One of our bloggers whose been correct with a few insider tidbits has informed us that rumours of a Kalou bid are extremely wide of the mark… I’m still unsure as to why we need another striker.

I’m also tiring of the ‘Eduardo fitness’ debate. He’s been running about since November last year, he’s had 4-5 set backs along the way… but the key is he hasn’t had a preseason set back. You could take the fitness argument wherever you wanted to… for example, I read an article a few years back by a sports scientist who said on average, a professional footballer will sustain a serious injury once every 2 years…. so on the basis of that, we should buy a world class left back to replace Clichy who has had two injury free years… no? Does that sound ridiculous? Of course it does. I think Eduardo has as much chance as anyone staying injury free this year.

On the defensive front, apparently the 6ft 5in Federico Fazio has rejected our overtures in favour of re-signing for Sevilla. In other news, I rejected the overtures of Megan Fox to commit to my girlfriend. Sorry Megan.

I’m also pleased to announce that Phillipe Senderos has nearly agreed terms with Everton and will be heading up North to try and resurrect his career with the Toffees. Phil, the last time I went to Liverpool to see Everton, I was nearly attacked by 5 blokes in a stolen Vauxhall Zafira for wearing gloves at a petrol station… good times. I’m sure you’ll love it up there!

On the subject of Big Phil, what is it with Arsenal fans and their poor memories? Senderos left us under a cloud of embarrassment after spending his final season demonstrating he couldn’t cut it at the highest level… yet this summer, I’m reading comments about him being our best defender. Are we talking about the same defender who broke down in tears after the West Ham game and had to be rested due to ‘emotional issues’? Crying is for girls I’m afraid… not 6ft+ burly centre backs who want to be taken seriously. Crying… pffft… what a pansy!

The same with Eboue… ok, the guy has talent in the same way there is always a kid in Wembley doubles who is amazing… yet when they get out on an 11 aside pitch they can’t cut it. Eboue has never delivered for us, he has dived, time wasted and fluffed his lines more times than I care to mention. Even at right back he failed… because if he hadn’t, he’d still be our right back, wouldn’t he? Let’s stop worrying about players leaving who haven’t cut it… Wenger is usually pretty spot on about letting players go who no longer serve a purpose.

Finally, I’m getting pretty excited about the prospect of playing in a 4-3-3 next season. There are too many combinations to start picking out our best starting 11, which could be viewed as a bad thing, or it could signal that for once, we have genuine competition for a starting place. I’ve also been thinking about Theo Walcott a lot over the last few weeks (Not in a special friends kind of way). This is a major season for him… he has to prove himself, because Jack Wilshere is miles ahead of him for footballing intelligence and sadly, as a goal threat. Rosicky proved with his first touch on Saturday that he isn’t going to be a passenger this year, and there are a few other players who would be more than happy to give him a run for his money. If we can see the Theo we saw against Chelsea, but with a clinical edge… we could be in for a real treat!

Finally… I’m going to ask you politely to have a look at some of the other stuff we’re doing at the moment.

The £50million pound gamble… + the duo we’re battling it out for.

August 4, 2009

So, the summer transfer window is proving to be as frustrating as finding a closed pistachio nut in your nut bowl. For once, I think most of the Gooner faithful appear united in what we need… a centre midfielder of beast like proportions and a centre back who has good defending at the top of his C.V…

The subject of my ramblings today is strengthening through weakening. Are Arsenal banking on a weaker top 4 to compete next year?

So far this summer we’ve watched Chelsea grow another year older without really recruiting anybody that special. I’ve read about the white Ronaldinho… Jerk-off… and to be honest, I reckon he is overrated. Arshavin is the only Russian who is allowed to set the Premiership alight this season and that is a fact… Pirlo is too old to be trying his luck in the Premiership. His signing reminds me of the Deco signing last summer. Fat Frank is single and ripping up the club scene and Drogba is very injury prone these days. Having a coach without Premiership experience can be as much of a gamble as having a player without it.

Manchester United have lost a winger who they could bank on scoring 40 goals and grabbing ten assists… they’ve replaced him with players of poor calibre if you ask me. Sure, Owen could score a few… I don’t think his signing was as poor as many people made out… Obertan would get me about as excited as a day pass to the library and Valencia has never impressed me.

Liverpool have just lost a superb player in Alonso and Mascharano is making all the right noises if you are a fan of the other top four clubs. Replacing him with an injury prone Aquiliani doesn’t really impress me. Stevie G and Fernando Torres are superb players, but keeping them fit is a harder task than breaking into that pistachio nut I was talking about earlier.

Then we have Arsenal… we’ve let Adebayor, Toure, Senderos (Nice to see Arsenal.com first to let us know as usual) and possibly Eboue move all in one summer. That’s 132 starting appearances disappearing off our books in a month, if that isn’t a shock to the system I don’t know what is. My problem with the sale of the said players isn’t so much to do with them leaving, more to do with a comment Wenger made about Real Madrid,

‘In my opinion, to recruit more than three players in a transfer window, as Real plan, is taking a technical risk.’

If recruiting 3 players is a technical risk, surely selling 3 players who all put more than 30 overall appearances is an even bigger risk. Especially if you don’t replace them…

This leads me to believe that perhaps Arsene has looked at the other top 4 teams, seen that they’ve been weakened and decided that the odds on his gamble will be a little better this year? It’s not the strong getting stronger for once… it’s the weak. Will this mean that the Premiership sees the most unpredictable campaign in its short history? Quite possibly. Does it make the thought of us not signing any more players that little bit more irksome… most definitely.

This summer shouldn’t be the time for taking another massive gamble on a season in the hope it all comes good… this should be the summer we strike while our enemies are wounded, build on our weaknesses and train harder on our strengths. If we do that, this could be our season… our chance to assert dominance on the Premiership and maybe Europe… our chance to wrestle the mantle of prettiest footballing side away from Barcelona… our chance to put Arsenal FC back on the map!

I think our season rests on the decisions the coach is going to make this week. He’s got £50million to gamble with… here’s hoping he’s going to twist… not stick.

Update: Since writing this last night, the rumour that we’re after Kalou has reemerged. Whilst the obvious thing for me to do would be to curse him as a poor player… I wont. He’s not a world beater, but I’ve got a few Chav mates who rate him and I think he’d definitely offer us something with regards to flexibility, skill and workrate. Chamakh looks the more talented of the two… I can’t help but think maybe we’re moving for Kalou to force the French club into selling… I still find it odd that we’re chasing a right sided attacker with the options we have… but I suppose if Eboue is off, it makes sense experience wise.

So… plenty to mull over today Grovers!

See you in the comments!

The Jacky Wilshere show / Pleasant surprises / Transfer gossip

August 3, 2009

So after what proved to be a slightly dull and drab first game of the Emirates Cup… most were hoping for an exciting, slightly more ambitious finish. You know, the type of performance that would get us all singing the praises of the team… backing the club for global domination this season.

Did Arsene deliver? Oh yes he did. He put out what can only be described as an eclectic combination of attacking style, mixed with some more attacking flair mixed with… er… lots of attacking stuff.

Bar Silvestre at the back, I had no real complaints. As much as I don’t favour Eboue in right midfield… I can stomach him at right back. Song surely had to do better than the dire Denilson… and the additions of Cesc, Wilshere, Arshavin and Eduardo to the starting line up were more than enough to get my pre-season juices flowing… oh… and Wenger cheekily threw the unknown… yet exciting Fran Merida into the starting 11. Fran is a bit enigma… we all saw his Barca youth vids… got hugely excited, but never really saw enough of him to start calling for him name… it would be good to see what he could do today.

Almunia

Eboue Gallas Silvestre Clichy

Cesc Song

Wilshere Merida Arshavin

Eduardo

So the game kicked off like most do, two centre forwards passing to one another… Rangers came at us but we absorbed their early pressure. Arshavin picked up play, passed the a ball into Jack who dummied, Cesc gathered the ball, turned… dinked it through 3 Rangers players to Arshavin who flicked it back to Wilshere… who buried it low into the right hand corner. A superb bit of build up play from the boys… and a clinical finish to boot from Mr Wilshere. 1-0 up before the second minute… good times in the Emirates.

Arsenal continued to toy with Rangers for the next ten minutes… Silvestre even tried to latch onto a through ball… then Cesc picked up the ball from deep within our half, fired the type of 40 yard Hollywood ball Denilson was having a go at yesterday, Arshavin padded the header backwards into the path of the oncoming Merida who angled a peach diagonal ball into Eduardo who found himself one on one… there was only going to be one winner… Eduardo buried the ball low and hard in off the far post. What a superb goal.

May I once again tell everyone that we do not need a new striker… especially one as limited as Huntelaar. Oh, and stop talking about Eduardo getting injured… any of our players could get injured this season, it doesn’t mean we need to sign a £20million back up in case. Chamakh is supposedly on the cards, but he’s not coming into the first team… and remember, we have an in form Vela to return. At the end of the day, you wouldn’t expect Oxfam to spend your £2 a month pitching up a well in Islington… so don’t expect Wenger to splash his oh so precious cash bolstering the most over subscribed position in the team.

On 25 minutes Eboue played a hopless ball down the line to Songs imaginery friend… the amusing things was Jack turned back and bollocked him. Loved it. Mind you… I thought Eboue was having a storming game in his favoured position.

Minutes later, my new great white hope, Fran Merida spanked a 30 yard rasper. He is an impressive performer… he looks well built, he is tidy and has an eye for an extravagent pass… he plays like a more mobile Cesc.

It was interesting to see Senderos on the sidelines again… maybe he hasn’t made enough friends at Everton to hang out with them on a Sunday? Or perhaps he hasn’t moved to Everton at all? Who knows…

At this point, I think it is key to mention that Song was having a good game. He wasn’t wasting passes, he was positioning himself well and he was trying hard.

Our problem from corners reared it’s ugly, season on season, repetitive, ugly, season on season ugly face again. A tame corner was fired in pretty low… Almunia made a hash by slapping it away 6 yards and Rangers nearly found themselves back in the game.

It’s really disappointing that we can’t buy a player who is capable of sorting out the defence… or a coach that will allot even 2 minutes of time to defending set pieces. I keep reading people telling me that Hangeland is not better than Senderos… well… number one, that tells me you’ve never seen him play… number two, you’ve forgotten how bad Phil Senderos was… number three… that you haven’t watched Fulhams rise from relegation fodder, to Europa cup entrants in the space of the 18 months he’s been there.

Put that in your ‘Big Phil is great’ pipe and smoke it.

It amazes me how anti-any-player-who-isn’t-a-brand-name we are. Huntelaar has a great record in the Dutch league who have produced such goal scoring greats as Dirk Kuyt, Mateja Kezman and Alfonso Alves… Yet Chamakh, who Makelele reckons is the best striker in French football, who Blanc insists wont let him go to a rubbish club… is binned off as useless despite helping his club wrestle the French Championship from Lyons grasp for the first time in forever (7 seasons to be precise). Give me a striker out of France any day of the week… they produce far better quality.

There were a couple more exciting moments before the half finished, the first was watching Jack jink past two Rangers defenders and attempt an outrageous chip from 20 yards that nearly beat the keeper. A couple of minutes later, Eboue attempted a first time shot from the edge of the box and he shanked it 60 yards the wrong way… I liked it because Eboue laughed about it when he ran back… that lad has a good sense of humour… I wish he read Le Grove… oh wait… he does!

The final bit of magic came when Arshavin played a first touch pass with an outside of the boot flick into the path of Eddie… sublime.

The second half began with some changes. Denilson and traore replaced Gallas and Clichy

Arsenal started to look more suspect… it didn’t have anything to do with Denilson in the middle if the park, and Song looked absolutely world class in at Centre back. I honestly hope Vermaelen and Gallas get injured so I can see more of Song at centre back. The way he slid in for a pass he was always going to miss which very nearly led to a Rangers goal filled me with confidence.

Snoop Dog came on late on… looking all raptastic… seriously though, I think he looks classy and bulked… he started the move for the third by chasing a lost cause, cutting it back to Rambo, who picked out Jack at the back post… who cooly buried it. Bravo Jack… player of the tournament!

Ratings:

Almunia: Having a pretty woeful preseason if you ask me. He’s had bugger all to do and I’ve seen him pass to an oppostion striker and slap a cross. It doesn’t look good does it? Must do better this year because Fabianski will be chomping at the bit to get a start… and I think he could be rather good. 6

Eboue: I thought he did much better in at right back… he looks more assured going forward than he does from midfield which is strange. Anyway, he’ll be off soon… 6.5

Gallas: Looked like he pulled up with a hamstring injury… I just love how one defender picks up an injury… they all feel the need… like girls going to the toilet. Wenger needs to go out an make sure we have a suitbable back up purchased because I have little confidence in Song, Silvestre and JD keeping us in the league should Gallas and Vermaelen (<- Who I have to assume is amazing right?). 6

Silvestre: I don’t really have much to say about him… he should be ok as a back up, but invariably he isn’t… he helped us keep a clean sheet today, even with the inexperienced Song next to him.

Clichy: Nice to see our number one left back where he belongs today. One of my favourite players in an Arsenal shirt… I’m looking forward to him returning to form this year and proving he is the best in the business. 7

Song: I thought he had a very good first half. He got in the way, didn’t get out muscled… kept up with play. I guess that’s why he was dropped into centre back in the second half… Wenger couldn’t have someone taking the limelight off love child Denilson. He did a good job as well… Song made a severe hash of a through ball early in the second half and nearly cost us a goal. Against Man United… that’s a goal. Those are the margins we are dealing with… Its amazing that just as Song started to look average… we change his position. 6.5

Cesc: Starting to look like a real man… yeah, those tattoos are scary… the beard even scarier. ‘Big scary Cesc’ they’ll be calling him now Ade and Toure have left. He put in a good performance, playing nice and deep where he thrives. Now he has decent target men, I think we’ll see a happier Spaniard. Looking forward to seeing what he can offer this year! 7

Wilshere: He played a blinder in this tournament last year… then disappeared from the scene for a season. I don’t know whether it’s worth getting excited this year about him? Hopefully we’ll see some more games from him… Madrid and Rangers might not be the best teams in Europe… but they’re no mugs and he made mince meat of them. I think he has the full respect of his peers aswell… I don’t really need to talk about his talent… all I will say is don’t put too much pressure on him. Patience is a virtue with the kids, I am wary how much pressure we put on Theo… Jack is a different kettle of fish because he’s a natural, but lets not expect Messi like contributions from him this year, he is 5 years younger than him. 8.5

Merida: Now here is the surprise package of the preseason. Who’d have thunk it? Captain Quiet… Fran Merida! He is powerful, creative, a good dribbler and prone to the odd shot. Could he be a serious first team contender this year? Could he be the reason why Wenger doesn’t have a problem shifting on Eboue? Well… I hope so! I really like the look of him and I reckon he could be one of the break through players this year. 7.5

Arshavin: The guy is sheer class. He is going to be so important to us this year… he is going to signal the rebirth of Arsenal this season. Well, if he is given the right players to play with. His intelligence on the pitch is fantastic, his audacity is breath taking and I think he is going to give us some magical moments. If he can earn Le Champ inside six months, imagine what he can do in a year? 7.5

Eduardo: He thundered into a challenge early on which told me he is totally over that leg break thing a few years back. He also finished off his first chance with his usual clinical swagger. This is the man that stops us having nightmares about 52 chances, 0 goals. This is the man that boosts Cesc’s assist tally by 10… this is the man who can give our fancy dan football some end product. 7.5

Conclusion:

Despite playing a couple of bobby average teams, I’m pretty confident that we don’t need anything attacking wise. I still think we’ll struggle with Song/Denilson in the middle for a whole season. I’d like someone with pace, aggression and aerial ability in the middle… and I still think we need an organiser and a aerial beast in defence. Hopefully at least one of those positions will be addressed this week… because whatever Wenger says… the 18 points we lacked last year wasn’t down to a 5% character problem… it was down to a 20% defensive frailty problem. Paddy V can’t solve that from the touchlines. Attacking players of greatness wont allow us to forget that… right Grovers? Stay strong… don’t be thrown of the scent of what our demise was last year.

Geoff is offline for a bit this week… he’s touring round Spain promoting Le Grove for some outrageous fee… however, his web connection is a bit dodgy, so I’ll be keeping you entertained most of this week!

See you in the comments Grovers!
