So who have we bought in? Vermaelen. Does that make us stronger than last season? Of course it doesn’t, and it wasn’t last year, it was 3 months ago, you’ve seen pre season, has Song or Denilson got better? No of course not, has the defence? No of course it hasn’t, I like Vermaelen, I think he’s Keownesque but he couldn’t out jump a 40 year old Barnet player, and height and winning high balls was the problem, so we haven’t addressed it have we???
Anyway, who cares, we are richer than we were in May and as Wenger told someone who said he has been supporting Arsenal for 50 years and last year was a disaster. ‘did we get into the Champions league semi final before?’
If getting humiliated in a semi final of the champions league is what you judge success on Arsene, I guess we should be grateful, me, I like to win, and if that means spending money we have on players we need then that’s what we should do, almost to a supporter we all say we need a centre back monster and a defensive midfielder as Denilson is not good enough.
Don’t wait to get knocked out of the ECL until you realise you are wrong, act now before the season is over. Dramatic maybe, but true. Looking good in pre season against shit teams tells us nothing.

For instance calling one of our player like Denilson “shit” instead of saying that he needs to improve”. Because the facts suggest that he is a decent player, and we have all noticed areas he needs to improve on.

On the topic of another Centre Back: We already have Gallas, Vermaelen, Djorou, Song and Sivlestre and all of these players are going to want to get some game time. Now if solid defense is aided by good partnerships between centre-backs, if we bought in one more would that not mean that they would have to be rotated more often, and therefore less likely to build up good partnerships? this would be more likely as well if Wenger brought in an expensive CB who was guaranteed first team game time? I suppose with our injury problems we wouldn’t have a problem though

Celtic are a week team and if they get one over in us then the blame will lie fully in AW, Rosicky counts as 5 signings so far in Wangers books as that is how many times hee has said he is like a new signing b4 he get’s injured. Rosicky has never played more than 3 consecutive games for the club without a minor niggle or 2 week injury (1.5 years for most teams).
I am really just fed up of all the lies that this club is feeding me and have been close for the last few years to not renewing my ST and going to support Barnet (an honest club). This year I asked about getting seats in the lower teir and was told no chance, so signed up again for the CL at 3x the price and then a month later told that the waiting list had dwindled and seats were available!

Morning Grovers… it looks like the economical Wenger will go to the wire again with his bargain buying likely to done on or around the window deadline.. I am sceptical about leaving it this late but also understand that the man likes to be shrewth with his purchases. Although everyone must know Arsene’s tactics by now and what he is hoping to achieve is to either shave off a couple of million on the transfer tag or the players wages… maybe the waiting game is one which he will hold out on until the selling clubs and player’s agents finally submit defeat and reduce the value which just might prompt Wenger into action!
This summer it’s been painstakingly obvious that most of our intended targets have decided to either stick with their current clubs or sign for another more ambitious cash rich team. Vermaelen signed for us because he wanted to and now Chamakh is So keen that it smells like the desperation of cats urine! last season the whole of season we played 442 or 541 and it did not suit the way the play particualy 451 it complete stifeld there attacking play thats what this team is all about, there is no doughting that song-delinson are not and will never be the best midfielders in the world but lets all be honest here not 1 of our cb played well for 100% of season,not gallas,not toure,not dj and defenly not silvest,.not 1 of the cb played very well throughout the wole season mainly due to the fact bad partneership gallas/toure just did not work that well,i think with formation we have will be alot more attacking and will take alot of presure of the defence,we played very defensively long periods of season because we were without cesc and oviously delinson will never replays cesc so 451 was deployed and left the 1 striker isaolted and of couse put alot more presure on the defence.have song delinson improved,i think song has alot from the start of last season not sure about delinson but i feel if the team use the passing movement they have and link up play we have more enough to win games,but i would prefer song play cd and wenger get another midfielder but with 433 formation 2 dm players should depoyed and leave cesc to link up with the wingers and strikers,i hope wenger keeps on troae in midfield and playes vela alot more

But i know we will injuries so maybe this will be a non issue.

Gotta say how exciting the CL games this year and I don’t think Arsenal need to strengthen, they have a team and squad that could still play most teams off the park. If the state of the Scottish game is as bad as the media and English fans says, the kids could come out and still win.
The reality is that won’t be an easy ride for Arsenal. Better sides than the current Arsenal squad have confused the state of the Scottish game for the state of Celtic and come away from Parkhead with nothing. I hope Arsene thinks he has enough resources currently at his disposal to do away with Celtic, although the likes of Arshavin, Fabregas, VP and Walcott have the skill to tear a new one in most teams, but I also fancy Maloney, McGeady and Scott Brown to get at the back Arsenal back 4. Should be a great open couple of games.

Since Champions League qualification is not essential for the club’s financial well being….that means if we beat Celtic Wenger will have another 25 million to spend on the transfer market.

I respecfully disagree. I have assessed Wenger critically for quite some time. He is a good coach and intense, but he makes stupid mistakes repeatedly. All coaches make mistakes, nobody is perfect! Chelsea lost to Barca because Guus removed an attacker against a 10 man team. Chelsea could have scored more. Arsene makes mistakes because of blind faith in his “beliefs”! His line up can be suspect atimes but especially his sub timming and strategy cannot stand scrutuny. Some of the matches we played from 07/08 to last season attest to that.

I’m assuming that the logic behind signing Silvestre, was that Wenger had seen the teams tendency to flap under pressure. This might have made him opt for an older, more experienced player which he thought might povide a calming influence at the back.

You can’t charge people like us so much to get in and fail to deliver without criticism. If we are a selling club and rely on youth, charge us less, we may then suffer it.

I’m confident in this squad. I’m also confident our other big 4 rivals, Man U and Liverpool, are weaker. As for us, losing Adebayor and having someone else start in his place is improving. Putting in a motivated Vermaelen in place of a guy, Toure, who wanted out makes us better. An injured Nasri doesn’t help, I’ll grant you. But we also have Arshavin, our best player, for the full year and for the Champs League. And though you don’t like Song, clearly his form in the last 1/3rd of the season was better than the first part of the season, and I’m confident he’ll resume where he left off. We have, for now, a healthy Eduardo, a healthy Cesc, an improved Ramsey, super Jack Wilshere, depth at right and left backs behind two of the best starting backs in the world. I wouldnt say weve still got eddie, i thought we had rosicky back until a few days ago. Arshavin is quality but attack was never our problem and still isnt. We’ve played some pretty poor teams pre season and still looked suspect at the back. We conceaded so many long range goals last season coz we never had anyone good enough at DM to close the shots down, we still dont. Also height at the back was a problem from corners and again, it still is. Unless verm is quality, but lose him and were back with silvestre at the heart of our defence
muamba is at bolton, gilbert still plays for us i think. lupoli played in italy then went derby last year. hoyte is at middlebourgh but i dont know about larsson. i thought he was quite good in the prem for birmingham but havent heard anything since

I quite like Diaby and Denilson. Have a feeling they will do well together compared to the Denilsong partnership.
If you had watched Brazil in the cofederations cup, you would find some similarities. Denilson playing the Gilberto role(sitting back and intercepting passes, tackling), Diaby plays the Melo role(has more freedom but has defensive duties). Cesc has to be given freedom in my opinion. But he has to team up with denilson and diaby in defending.
I dont like Diaby in the defensive position and i certainly dont like fabregas further up the pitch, he looks lost. i think he had one good game there last season.

Dan I think Denilson can be a good DM. Wenger said he is a cross between Rosicky and Gilberto. If you look at his pass interception rate, it is almost 4 per game. I am not sure if it is as high as Clichy’s. And if you watch carefully, he is more succesful in the tackle as compared to Song! Add to that, he is above average at positioning.
He is really good at retrieving the ball and mopping up the floor if you can call it. He is similar to Gilberto. He will look good when he plays alongside someone like Diaby.

I, for one, don’t put too much stock in preseason, particularly in assessing a squad’s defense after they get up 2 nil early in a match. Not only do you point to a preseason match, but one which we won 3 nil. Anyway, regardless, you might be right about this defense. I’m going to reserve judgment on Vermaelen, but I like that we’ve got him in there and got out a guy who didn’t want to be there anymore. That’s a plus. I’m going to give Wenger the benefit of the doubt, given that he brought in Sagna and I’m sure people were scratching their heads at that. My biggest beef here is when folks’ love and support of the club is so easily overmatched by pessimism. Why don’t we all try some cautious optimism, yeah?

b) We have made £40M(probably up front) so far this window, I’m not a greedy man but surely we could put a couple of down payments on with that chunk of wonga. After all, only the Arabs & Chavs pay in 1 instalment. £40M is a shitload of deposit money to spread around.

Hello, I stay in scotland and have the misfortune of watching the SPL. In no manner do Celtic resemble WBA. Traditionally they play a high tempo pressing game and the arsenal can expect zero time on the ball before being muscled off it.
Whether mowbray plays this style remains to be seen. The fans certainly demand it.
Whichever way arsenal play their passing is gonna have to be clinical. Of course arsenal have the players to completely destroy celtic. I just hope they are gonna be ready for a battle.

Test – See, with me, I don’t think it’s his principles controling him, but the situation fitting his principles.
Yeah there is money, or there should be, but then we have built a stadium and we are in debt, so that has to take consideration.
From day one that Wenger got here he’s bought players cheap and built them up or integrated them to heights that far outstretch their value in monetary terms.
The difference now is not Wenger’s spending but that the money thats avilable only goes sOo far, and it’s much harder to find the sort of players that would give us the value on the pitch that we need, thats not his fault or even the clubs, it’s because of outside investment in other teams.
So a new manager isn’t especially going to help, unless he’s very very lucky, nor is spending the money we have for the sake of spending, because it’s only going to get you sOo far while increasing the risk we operate under.
The only two options I see are to let Wenger work under the restrictions we have or prepare for the takeover.
Whether we have 40m or the full 80m in cash reserves that’s still dwarfed by the money other clubs have spent.

We were written off the season before last after TH14 left, yet we were the best team for 2 3rds of the season. Unfortunately it went tits up, but we were unlucky with injuries. Chelsea haven’t won the league when they had long term injuries (Cech, Terry) and Man U won’t win the league if they lose Rooney or Rio for any substantial time. It’s just the way it goes.
We haven’t really weakened as a team since that season – yet Man U & Chelsea have.
We’ve only lost Flamini who would still get in to the team. Nasri is better than Hleb, we have got Arshavin and Toure is been at fault for over a half of our goals in the last 2 seasons – so we are better off in my opinion. We WILL sign a CB and Chamakh and I think he will bring in Paddy to nurture Song & Denilson. He will play in the tough away games and bring a presence to the team.
And besides, I am feeling very optomistic because I am moving abroad during this season and the last 3 times I have done that we have won the league all 3 times. ’98, ’02 & ’04

Diaby has played well, I have been happy with him, Song has had positive and negative moments.
I expect to see Theo, Eduardo and probably Wilshere in the 2nd half.

I wasn’t too worried about the coming season during preseason. Things looked reasonably promising considering what we had, and thought Wenger would go and buy to improve things.
After that game, I’m worried.
We were poor from the start, and only really looked like we’d started to controll the game for about 5 mins at the start of the second half.
Everything was poor before & after that.
It’s left me with a glimer of hope again though. The sheer fact we know Merida is going out on loan, and Wenger would never put Gibbs in a holding midfield role in a meaningful game (would he?!), for me point to the fact he’s going to buy a CM.
Even taking into account that Denilson didn’t feature at all, we still look light and his 2nd half team selection seems to indicate he know that too.
Still looking shoddy in defence too.
This is a massive week for us & Wenger, he’s got to see the problems as we all do, as all the pundits do, as all the ex-players do.

Arsene is now the longest surviving manager of Arsenal (in my time at least) to have gone without silverware. Sure, he is also the most successful manager of my time, but no-one, not even Herb Chapman went so long without a trophy before being moved on.
I think it is fair for people to question Arsene’s decisions. Arsene has bid for CBs and DMs. It is obvious that he shares the view that we could do better by strengthening our defence (including DM). Under the circs, I think it is fair to ask why we aren’t seeing these players joining us.
I differ slightly from the mainstream of Le Grove, in that I don’t see a need for a DM, just a strong CB. I think Denilson is good enough.

We conseeded when having our Carling Cup team on the pitch. Diaby is useless as ever. I liked Song today. He was fit, good at interceptions and his passing was ok. He will come good.

BBK, b/c Chamakh is a very hard worker, a team player who will assist before he scores and always look for options. He will create and will give CB’s a tougher time than Bendtner could..

i don’t think that ethan, santa cruz is a typical old fashioned centre forward, he just wouldn’t be on the same wavelength as someone like arshavin, because he doesn’t have the intelligence.
I agree that of course different players suit different systems and develop relationships on the field with different players who compliment them etc, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t judge the general quality of a player.
He’s a decent premiership centre forward, who arrived as an unknown quantity and scored goals, then people worked out how to play against him, so he didn’t score any goals, he’s identical to benni mccarthy in that respect.
He just doesn’t have the ability to play for a team like us imo.
Although you can’t know for sure whether a player will perform better in our system, it doesn’t mean that you can make a pretty good prediction that darren bent, or jason roberts wouldn’t do well for us, despite their never being tried

A, I personally reckon Santa Cruz could have done well in an Arsenal team. He’s more intelligent than you might think. He’s been playing proffessionally since he was 17 and at a high level since 19, and i reckon a strikers intelligence is augmented through experience, which he obviously has. I don’t think defences have sussed him out, rather injuries have hamperred him having a decent run of games which is vital to goalscoring strikers.

I’d have to disagree Angelos, Santa Cruz has had one good season in his entire career, and last season although he was injured, he still started 17 premiership games, and scored just 4 goals. Some of the chances he missed were absolutely horrific too, and his all round game has always been very limited, he isn’t an arsenal style forward, because he doesn’t have the link up play.
He’s been playing since he was 19, but apart from the season before last with Blackburn, the most goals he’s managed in a league season is 5, so it isn’t like he has goalscoring experience! He only scored 31 goals in his whole time at Bayern, he’s never been a prolific goalscorer apart from the one year.

I was always a big Santa Cruz fan. That Blackburn season is the only one he had a clean run of games in and he showed what he was capable of. Throughout his career he has had niggling injuries and coaches who didn’t trust him. He has great goalscoring potential if he keeps himself fit and plays regular football. Hopefully he can get that at Man City. And his link up play is not as bad as you think A.

Santa Cruz is light years ahead of Thomas Bendtner. Forgetting he was injured 1/2 the season playin on an average team. The fact that he is injury prone has fack all to do with his ability. Comparing Cruz to Benjani is rather a clueless comment who was the player that single handedly ended Uniteds 12 game clean sheet? U can be shockingly clueless atimes.
David, I think there are quite a few managers who could do a much better job than Wenger. I really like Gus Hiddink and if the chance ever came up for us to employ him I believe it would go a long way in tightening up our squad and making us a winning outfit. I also like the look of Guardioala so far, getting his team to press and close while giving them all individual roles which they perform to a t, but one season proves nothing.
Does anyone remember Quique Sanchez Flores when he was at Valencia a few years back…he looked impressive but was cut down by the board.

Silvestre predictably allowed Villa to score eventually. With him in at CB to me it seems we will always let goals in regardless who or how good the goalie is. Not good young Fabiniski looked in pain, he did very well to save a penalty.
Fixing most of our defensive woes is pretty simple… either wenger stops playing a really really high defensive line or we buy some centre backs that can play that system and do not stop and put their hands up appealing for offside everytime a ball gets played through them…. play to the whistle!!! is actually schoolboy stuff

He had a horrid first 15 mins I felt but so did the rest of the team. He did settle down a bit but gave up a lot of fouls it seemed. He was good in protecting the ball though when he had it. I think he still has a ways to go in positional play and reading the game as well as distribution. We know Cesc is not a complete midfielder so we need someone to cleanup and give him the ball with a bit of room in order to create for the front line. Cesc was far too isolated and starved for the ball and partially I think Song is to blame for that.
I only watched the 1st half, but i thought he did okay.

I actually think that Wenger’s obsession with buying players for the future has detracted from the real problem which he just won’t or cant address.
I read RVP left his options open and only signed as he was given assurances that the team would be strengthened.
Now the balance is all wrong, we have a few gifted players,a load of squad players, and two or three really exciting youngsters,who will remain down the pecking order regardless of results.
Song wasn’t fouling as much as harrying the opposition players, something which is a +ve in the PL. I think he worked very hard as well. I’m not saying he’s the answer but he convinces me a little more every match.
Yeah the highline works when you have speedy CBs that have a good reading of the game i.e Gallas. But usually those types are not as dominant in the air thus our problem. I think Wenger will look at the highline for CL games if we qualify. Technical teams from Europe can break it pretty easily it seems as do the Manc cunts, Pool and Chavs since they have more technical and skilled players then the rest.

the ball over the top and a well timed run is the formula to beat us it seems along with set plays. We gave up a goal from a corner and kept getting found out by through balls with well timed runs from top class forwards today. Think fat frank to dogsbreath, whoever to Keane, pretty much most of the goals came from those two problems.

Yesterday the main problem was that the defenders had absolutely no recovery pace. After every through-ball or defence was always second. Also whatever happened to man marking? It looked like zonal yesterday.
So play a half decent team and we lose, but Wenger believes in this team and I’m too negative.

Mayank! How do you say song is more committed? In terms of concentration levels, denilson is miles better. Song makes too many errors and his positioning is horrible.

It is tragic and alarming that such young men are being lost from something as innocuous as running around. I hope that everything possible will be done to attempt to prevent this from occurring again. I know it’s sometimes impossible to predict but it can’t be completely random. My deepest sympathese to Daniel Jarque’s family and I’ll take the opportunity to also remember Puerta. It makes you appreciate how silly and over-zealous we are as fans sometimes.
Was is genetic or acquired. Surely as athletes these men must be observing a healthy diet.
