Ade, going, going… Now is the time to have a real clear out Arsene.

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So that made me laugh yesterday, Adebayor is having a work permit meeting in Manchester, so what the hell does that mean? He didn’t have one playing for us?

On the BBC, it says Ade has asked to sleep on it overnight as he is concerned how it would go down in Togo! No thought for his beloved Arsenal then? That’s his Goose well and truly cooked.

I had to laugh at old boy Robson yesterday, saying Tevez only moved for the money, ha, ha, so £28 million each on Rooney, Ferdinand and Veron when £10 million to everyone else was a fortune had nothing to do with money then, what a complete muppet hypocrite.

The thought of losing a big lump like him to our new biggest rivals fills me with dread, but the thought of getting rid of a lazy trouble maker that loves himself and depositing £25 million in our bank account excites me more. But only if he spends the money.

I would be tempted to ask for Richards, give them Kolo and spend £28 million on newer, better players, Talk is of Hazard, I like the look of him but he really is in the Wilshere mode, one for the future, what we need to challenge next year is a world class partner for Cesc, one because that would lift the team and two because without that we will be lucky to finish in the top 4, that’s my opinion.

So who are the candidates? Matuidi, Inler and Cana as Melo has all but gone, I must confess I don’t know enough about any of them save that they run a lot, shut down and win the ball, a bit like Ray Parlour and that’s what I think has been lacking. I keep mentioning Flamini but I know a lot of you have mixed feelings, I can’t understand why the boss can never bury his pride, it smacks of sulking, we all make mistakes and if the boss was so keen to keep him in the first place, he should be just as keen to bring him back, plus he would be the cheaper option and he knows the Premiership. Graham did it to great effect with Keown and he was one of Wenger’s stalwarts.

I also like the look of Numbchucks, but he would be off the the ACN so I would steer clear of him, if Wenger sells Eboue, Kolo and Adebayor that would only leave Song in the ACN and as he is not a first choice centre back, that may work. As we wouldn’t be losing a key member of the squad when we need him the most. He also needs to decide whether we need Senderos and Djourou, I like them both but will they make it? So maybe we should be looking at another centre back like Naldo, and if we get Richards as well we will have two players in every position along the back and bring in much needed cash.

So to sum up, if we sold Eboue, Djourou, Senderos, Kolo and Ade we could easily bring in £45 million and that would comfortably bring us in a world class centre back and defensive midfielder with enough left to land Micah Richards and Eden Hazard.

And the last two both want to play for us, so that is a massive bonus. Apparently Arsenal have sent people to talk to his parents in Belgium.

We will never have a better chance to improve our squad and we haven’t done that since 2003 so it’s about time, no one can say that we don’t have the money now because we clearly do and we would be losing some high wage earners so therefore saving even more money.

Come on Arsene, do the right thing, we may have lost Villa as a rival but Man City are a different proposition. Give us all some hope because selling Ade and not making hay while the sun shines will only leave us a much weakened side.

Have a great day Grovers, something will happen today!

I think the Arsh signing was more luck than judgement to be honest, so glad we got him but it could have gone wrong a la Alonso etc etc.

  2. redbearer

I dunno about that fellas… Wenger may one day surprise us all and pull a big fluffy white rabbit out of his hat.. besides I don’t care about 20 mil players when we could sign three for that amount with more much potential and Berg, Hazard and Matuidi could come in for under 25 mil… there’s no excuses once Ade is sold because we all will know that the money is there!

  3. Honest Bill

Angelos. Fair point, but as i can’t be bothered to rattle off a list of cheap signings that have turned out to be great. I will simply make the case, that often, the extra money is for the name alone, as opposed to the quality of the player. And if the quality is there, then the name grows anyway

  4. AA23

I hope i live long enoght to read Wengers own words on this period of Arsenal He’ll either prove he fucked it up or show how his hands were tied.
Or he’ll write a really fucking boring book going on and on about shit no one cares about and I wont get past page 73.

  5. MARK GOONER

the cheeky cunt has asked for 170,000 a week city have initially refused, his agent then as offered him to man utd who after an hour have rejected the idea, now he has had to go back and re negotaite with city

  6. JamaicanGunnersFan

A know alot of gunners fans in Ja, but dont know a lot on the grove. Your right when you say most jamaicans are either manure, chevs or liverpool fan, I see u have some deep insights.

The hunter is my prefered choice still, always a fan, dont much about Chamahk ….

Would love to see Matuidi in the squad as well

  7. AA23

Mark Gooner I just phoned my mate about the latest twist and he had a fatal heart attack.
PLEASE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH THE INFO!

  8. Angelos

Honest Bill you are completely right. But football is changing. We are in an environment were the best players are in the best leagues and the best clubs from an early age. With big clubs unwilling to sell valuable assets for anything less than top dollar. There are very few top players now that are 24-30 and play for average teams in mediocre leagues. Sure Wenger has developed many young players but he can’t keep doing it in the current format football has played itself into.

I watched the Arshavin saga from last summer when he nearly signed for the Spuds and then all through January.. painstakingly mind! Imo Arshavin swung the deal himself in the end by pleading with his club to let him go… his agent was a prick even then and I’m not surprised that he has been axed by Andrei. He clearly had exceptional ability which was highlighted in the Euro Championships… yes we were luck to get him and Ivan G also did some great work to get him in!

He will make the difference next season.. make no doubt about it… he is a match winner!

  11. MARK GOONER

get on newsnow guardian and observer are running bits and pieces of it, just heard it on talksport

he is also very worried how it will be received in africa due to our popularity over there compared to city, in other words they will think he is a money grabbing cunt

can u imagine the hostility towards him, if he is still with us next year

    unthinkable

  12. Paulinho

    Cause he’s a wanker AA23.

I absolutley hate him and have done since day one. And now he’s messing City about with his wage demands.

  13. A

I was so worried about the Ade thing – then saw that the source was the daily mail, so don’t give a poo! Will be complete bollocks, thank god for that!

  14. Ja_Gunner

    JamaicanGunnersfan

What part of Ja are you from?

Dont know much about Chamakh and dont want him….I would rather we use the Ade money to secure

    Etoo- 15 mil
Matuidi – 7 mil or so

I dont see the sense of replacing Ade with Chamakh…..

  15. A

Don’t worry people – there’s still the worry because it hasn’t gone through and if he’s asked for time or whatever, but the wage demand and offer to Utd thing is just from the Daily Mail, so it’d fine.

  16. Honest Bill

Angelos. I appreciate that it has become, on the whole, much harder to find those ‘gems’ I would argue that there are still many out there. One just needs a discerning eye for talent, which the Arsenal scouts undeniably have.

Also it must be considered that with clubs with particular footballins systems and a particular playing ethos, that often coaches can miss certain attributes which can make a player great in a certain system.

Also it is overlooked that talent must be brought to the surface of a players game. In this game where people need results immediately, often these great talents are all too quickly written off if they can’t be seen as the ‘new zidane’ immediately.

Besides which there are plenty of already good players out there for the 15-20M price range. Anywhere above that benchmark, and you are really only paying for the name, in my opinion

  17. Ja_Gunner

    ………………….Al……………………..

    Sag/Eb….Kolo/JD/Sendy…..Gal/Verm….Gael/Gibbs

    ……………….Matuidi/Song……………….

    ………Cesc/Den……………………………

    ……………………..Nas/Rosick/Diaby……..

    …RVP/Theo…………………Arshy/Bendy/Vela..

    ………………..Etoo/Eddy…………………

What a lineup that would be!!!!!

  18. AA23

    Paulihno
fair enough. I just phoned my mate and he makes you 100% right.
he called Ade “The shunty man!”
Fuck knows what he meant by that, but I think it sums the guy up.
    my mate not Ade.

  19. Hitman

How can you have a clear out and not mention Denilson!
Sorry to bring up that old chesnut. I’m sure he’d bring in another £7-9 mil.
Dont rate him. Just my opinion.

  20. Angelos

Honest Bill. That’s right and I sooo agree with you about paying the extra cash for the name and media exaggerations and the immediate comparative tags placed on young players which really bug me. But Arsenal are at a stage where they can’t buy anymore youth, not coz it’s bad just that it’ll only imbalance our squad even further.
There are too many young players in our team and the more mature players that we need and have the neccesary quality to push us to the next level have the ‘name’ whether we like it or not. We have to pay or get left behind…it’s as simple as that.

  21. AA23

Hitman, how did you know i just had a clear out!
My old woman almost puked when she went to brush her teeth.
But what does that have to do with Denilson?

  22. Stu

We dont necessarily need a “name”. More than we need someone who knows what it takes. Buying someone from another league who has experience of winning would be great. Regardless of the league winning is still winning and if you have a taste for it you will strive for more.

  23. A

We’ve got loads of experience in our team, it’s in our squad we’re full of young players, and we aren’t a club who could afford to have expensive players on our bench.

  24. A

Though obviously if we sign a DM a leader who can come straight into the team is a necessity, but age isn’t relevant.

  25. AA23

Mark Gooner theres no way you could write a million words on that.
    chill out mate.
a million words is loads, it would take even a proper typist ages, maybe even days!
Lets all just keep some past pective, Ade may have left but turning on each other like lord of the flys isnt the answer.

  26. Honest Bill

Angelos. I see your point, but i would argue that our team is not as bad as our last season’s performance suggests. We are actually in quite good shape. we are weak in one or two positions, most notably of course is central midfield.

You can get an experienced midfielder who is dominant and has all the attributes we need for around 15M. and in doing so, considerably strengthen our teams performances. In the short term i believe we can mount a sustainable challenge for trophies, with a few minor and inexpensive adjustments.

Then given the quality of our youth academy, which is one of the forerunners of what i believe, is the model for the future of footballing success. We are already in a good position for the future, not to mention the sustainable model we have developed financially, will eventually see us in the position to spend money where we need it.

The only problem we have is our immediate need to compete for trophies, which isn’t out of our grasp. A little spent now, will sort our team out. The future is the least of our concerns, since by all accounts, we already have that covered

  27. ManGoonian

Oh for gawds sake! Is this blog still operating? I complained to Gordon brown ages ago about this bloddy site!¬ Cannot believe it is still up and running???

You are all monkeys who need disciplining!!! Bend over now you twats!

  28. AA23

    Angelos
    Nice one mate
silvestre is proper quality and he brings a lot to the dressing room.
Ive seen him take a right hiding on here but its nice to see someone standing up for him.
    well said!

  29. Lou

I can’t see why wishing John Hartson well is remotely out of line. I too would like to send him and his family my best wishes and hopes for his recovery. As for Adebayor, I’m afraid he wears his colours a bit too prominently and if he’s not careful some of the decision makers at Man City will turn their attentions somewhere else and that will be bad news for us as he might stay.

  30. ManGoonian

I am confident that Adebayor will be Arsenal’s longest serving player in the history of the club… yeah, he will go onto complete a dazzling 2000 games for his beloved Gunners, leading the club out of the Vauxhall confeference and lifting the DAF van and Johnstone paint trophies…

Happy days! Stick that up your cake holes you effin negative doom merchant chuffers!

  31. Angelos

With Rosicky and Eduardo back we should be fine Bill. But I just want us to sign a star at some point that resonates within the game and goes some way in persuading people we aren’t just a creche but a major force and an attractive one because, like you’ve mentioned, the structure is already there.

  32. AA23

    Lou mate
why bring Hartson up again? I like a joke and a laugh too but some things are beest left alone.
what do you think of the Ade situation? good riddance? or a loss to us?

  33. Maciek

Hello Angelos.Aside from Hazzard, Welington, Affelay,is there any youn player who You would like to see playing for us? Do You rate Angel Di Maria or Jeremy Menez? Is Obertain who signed for Utd, any good? Any targets for cdm position for us?
Also, sorry for too many questions.LOL.

  34. A

Angelos I’d rather us win the league and champs league next season to show we’re a major force to be reckoned with, than sign a player which doesn’t mean anything! I’d rather win things whilst not spending lots of money

  35. Honest Bill

ManGoonian is not actually a person posting at a computer. He is a sentient digital being who resides within the very core of the internet it’s self.

As such he can’t be held accountable for what he says

  36. AA23

    Mangoonian.
saying ade should give his wallet to hartson is out of order mate.
i like a joke as much as man at next but come on.
what do you make of Adebayor stalling? Reckon he’ll stay?

  37. Honest Bill

Angelos, That’s just it. A name is not what will convince people. Winning trophies will, and a big name does not always guarantee that.

  38. AA23

    Honest bill
    is that true about “Mangoonian”?
you seem pretty honest bill, is that some sort of program that takes words and re arranges them?
fooled the shit out of me to be honest!
did you write that Bill? Be honest?

  39. Angelos

lol no worries Maciek. Di Maria yes, I really like him he’s fast but intelligent which isn’t always the case with speedy players. My dad saw him in the olympics and said he’s even more impressive in training. Menez not really. He’s been around for a while and if he was gonna do something in the game it would have happened by now. Obertain I really haven’t got a clue about my friend.

  40. Lou

AA23. I don’t bring him up again. This is the first time I have mentioned the poor bloke. Let’s not loose sight of the fact that here are people dying in Afghanistan too. Young men who also like football. But, on a lighter note and as for the Ade situation. I think that he must go now surely. That sense of commitment has always been important to us Gooners and even more so now in these days of money, money, money. Adebayor is only in it for the cash and couldn’t give a toss about which club he plays for as long as it’s for plenty of dosh and on a long contract. Personally I have never rated him. His first touch has always been poor, he seldom goes past anyone and once he has scored he seems to think that is his work done. I also don’t think you can go into a season banking on the long term fitness of Rosicky (especially) and Eduardo, much as though I like him as a player. Therefore I think that the moves that Arsene makes in the transfer market this window are critical for the future of our club, his own future and for the backing of the supporters. After everyone told him that the squad wasn’t strong enough last year he insisted it was and he was proved wrong, for whatever reasons. If he did the same this year it would really be playing fast and loose with Arsenal I think and that must not happen.

  41. AA23

just gone back and done some “mangoonia” searches through le grove and i feel like a right tit!
Itsis so obviously a generated parser.
    fair play, i got done
    nice one “Honest” bill!
    Lol!

  42. Angelos

I don’t know 1 team that has one a trophy recently which hasn’t come off the back off big signings. But like I said with Rosicky, Nasri, Arshavin and Van Persie we should push.

  43. JamaicanGunnersFan

    Ja_Gunner

Cambridge, 20 – 25km south of Mobay, but I go to school @ Bethlehem (teacher college) Accounts/IT …

So who would u suggest we get then?

Are you saying that we have enough strikers?

But we do need a defensive midfielder: Matuidi,Matuidi,Matuidi,Matuidi

    Where ur from?

  44. Honest Bill

Angelos, But by that rationale, only Man City are in with a chance for the premier league this season.

  45. Maciek

Thanks Angelos. I have always rated Di Maria, and now I was right. Thanks once more, mate. Best wishes!

  46. ManGoonian

    AA23;

That reminds me, thanks… what was we saying?

Oh yeah, I hate Cagney and Lacey as well and as for Baywatch? Dont get me started…

  47. AA23

    Lou mate.
you are way out of line bringing up Hartson and Afghanistan.
    What gives brother?
but you are right, football is a game/sport that means a lot
    peace.

  48. AA23

    LOL!!!
I aint falling for that one again “Honest” Bill.
Mangoonian had me going for quite a bit though.

  49. Angelos

Not really. Look at how much Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool have spent recently as well. Liverpool have spent 17 mil on one player, man u close to 20 and Chelsea are looking for a ‘Marquee’ signing. There’s still 44 days left as well remember.

  50. Lou

AA23. You are right when you say that football is a game but I don’t get your point about Hartson and The war in Afghanistan. I am not way out of line at all and I make no link between Arsenal and those things other than to say that that there is a lot of hot air that gets blown around and people get worked up over nothing more than a difference of opinion. A sense of perspective is rarely a bad thing and I merely point out that there are other things in life that are also important.

  51. Honest Bill

Angelos. We spent that much on Arshavin, plus we have spent 10m On Vermaelen, and there are still 44 days for us left too. If those teams don’t need to spend 20M on a name, which so far they haven’t, then why must we?

  52. Angelos

No problem Maciek. Di Maria is a special talent and thanks for reminding of him. He needs to move to spain soon but to a team where he’ll get games, like Atletico, Villereal or Sevilla but I think the latter has a history of being blessed with some really talented wingers. Villereal would have been the perfect fit if Pellegrini was still there but we’ll see. He has some problems with his confidence like Higuain so he needs a strong coach to guide him.
    Stay safe Maciek.

  53. ManGoonian

Night fellas, the guards are doing a cell search, so gotta hide me cell phone…

    Up the old jacksy again….

  54. Angelos

There aren’t 44 days for us because we won’t spend 20 mil plus on a player. Liverpool needed to pay 27 mil for Torres before really shaping up, Man Utd 30 mil for Berbatov and and Chelsea are paying the price for not continuing their previously cash happy ways.
At the end of the day they’ve all spent and won trophies, we haven’t. But we’ll see. Nothing would make me happier than for Wenger to win the Premiership or Chmpions League with this team.

  55. AA23

    Mangooinian
lets face it our parents had to do the same during the wars!
my old man used to hide a big old Bakelite unit in his wrongun, we’ve got it easy!
peace to all gooners, soldiers and sports fans
    peace

  56. Zorr0

Angelos, what about shagging Megan Fox, drinking champagne from Jessica Alba’s navel and winning the euromillions, would that make you happier? Honestly?

  57. Honest Bill

30 mil on Berbatov hasn’t seemed to be such a great deal, in fact it seems it was Ronaldo who made the difference who cost them next to nothing. As i said, i don’t think we need to spend 20+ to challenge, we are already starting with Arshavin and Vermaelen more than we were last season, which add up to around 26 M, one more DM at around 15M should see us challenge. Can’t see why not.

  58. Zorr0

Wise words Bill, as always (well most of the time, lol)

I will leave you with Angelos who is now having happy thoughts and AA23 who seems to be slightly off the wall!

    Arriverderci!

  59. Angelos

Bill every player plays his part. But I’m not saying Berbatov was decisive, just saying that Man Utd are willing to pump that kind of money into the squad and it evidently pays off. Plus 12 mil for Ronaldo who was 18 at the time was alot. I can’t see Wenger spending that much on an 18 year old to be honest.

  60. A

Of course we won’t spend 20 plus mil on a player, because it would mean paying more than a player is worth.

Utd spent massive money on berbatov, and he was a complete flop! Berba offered them less last season than Bendy did to us, and there was 30 mil difference between them. Utd just won the league with their only summer signing being berba, who offered them close to nothing, that in itself proves that you don’t have to spend big money every year to win things.

  61. Angelos

Bye Zorr0. I have you to thank for the insanely awesome dream i’ll be having tonight. But I might switch Jessica Alba, the babyweight hasn’t completely gone yet and that kinda freaks me out.

  62. A

Angelos – Theo?! though he wasn’t an 18 year old to be fair, he was only 17 i guess…. Wenger has shown he’ll spend money on kids, though Ronaldo is a pretty unique case having shone so early, Wenger spent more than that on a 20 year old last summer in Nasri….

  63. Angelos

    A. Their team is full of 20 mil plus signings and Berba will be a very important player for them next season.

  64. Angelos

20 isn’t 18 A and Walcott didn’t cost us 12 mil. My argument is in the current climate you need to spend to win trophies and i still haven’t seen anything that contradicts that.

  65. Stu

I would agree with thet Angelos, that you need to soend to win, but not massive amounts on one player or a big name. I would prefer for us to buy 2 15m players than 1 30m player because 1 player, no matter how expensive cant do everything.

I know you’re not saying we should send 30m on someone but you get my point.

  66. A

Have to wait and see, I’m not so sure he will be Angelos.

The fact their players cost 20 mil plus is irrelevant, it almost proves that you don’t get what you pay for, because their squad is full of big money signings, but alot of players who are no better than ours yet cost loads more….

    Keepers weren’t big money,

    neither were right backs,

evra was pretty similar to sagna signing,

ferdinand was 30 mil and granted he’s absolute class, we got gallas for probably the equivalent of about ten mil, and he isn’t as good

vidic was 7 mil, less than vermaelen

valencia was 16 mil, but i’d have theo over him any day, or rosicky, or nasri, or arshavin

nani was a fair bit and he’s complete pants

carrick was big money and cesc is a much better player

fletcher cost little but is pretty useful, probably have him over song/denilson because of experience

rooney was 30 mil and is class, but no better than vp

berba was 30 mil and can’t do it at the top level, rather have bendtner, eduardo, arshavin

they’ve spent big money on massive flops like anderson, and hargreaves because of injury

Without ronaldo and tevez their team really isn’t very scary at all, full of big money signings, but rooney and ferdinand apart, the big money they’ve spent has been much more than what they actually have contributed to the club

  67. Stu

Yeah AA23, whats so confusing about that?

Angelos, i suppose but no more so than Bendtner who outscored Berba last season. He is good but not good enough to warrent his 30m pricetag imo.

  68. A

How about when liverpool won the champions league? they didn’t have any big name signings….

06/07 utd just spent 18 mil on carrick, thats not a 20plus mil player, and they lost a big name player in van nistelrooy too

  69. A

I agree Stu, and he’s certainly not good enough to say that it proves you have to spend 20 plus mil on players to win things, because he contributed what a 2 million pound signing could have contributed. Utd would most likely have won the league without spending that 30 mil

  70. Stu

Liverpool won the CL because of Rafas tactics.
But now that he thinks he has a good footballing team he dropped the tactics and has lost that advantage, especially when he comes up against a better attacking team…IMO.

  71. Angelos

A but they’ve won three titles in a row and a champions league final regardless.
You constantly have to pay over the odds in the modern market that’s just the way things have panned out.
And the players you compare to the Man utd counterparts took close to three years to develop, whereas the Man u players made relatively quick impacts thanks to their age and physique.
Having said that I really love Nasri, Rosicky, Van Persie and Arshavin.

  72. Honest Bill

Yes by all accounts, it is Uniteds less expensive players with quality who contribute to the team winning trophies.

And presumably, now that united have pent fuck all this window, that means that they can’t challenge, whereas comparitively, Man City should walk it?

I don’t thin so. Quality wins, money and big names don’t

  73. A

I dunno about that Stu – Liverpool’s league performance last season was their best since the start of the premier league, and their finish to the season was very impressive.

Liverpool are imo the main team we’ll be fighting at the top of the table, with chelsea an unknown force, and utd if they don’t sign anyone battling for 4th with City

  74. A

Disagree completely Angelos, Nani, Anderson still havn’t settled, Only Carrick, Ferdinand, Rooney, Van Nistelrooy have settled, they’ve had as many big money flops as they have big money successes

  75. Honest Bill

I don’t know A, i think that’s a little hasty, i can see it being a four way battle. Provviding we sign a decent DM and stay relatively free of injury

  76. Stu

Yes A, what i meant was they were also using tactics at the start of this past season. But after whooping some teams they figured they were brilliant at football and abandoned the tactics a fair bit and suffered because of it.

  77. A

I can’t bill, Utd are gonna struggle this year. When they sold Beckham they finished 19 points behind us the next season, imo losing Ronaldo and Tevez, and arguably losing Scholes and Giggs slowly as time goes on, will have a much bigger effect on them. This season they aren’t going to be challenging ourselves, Chelsea, and Liverpool, unless they just bank on not conceding, and become an incredibly boring team, and even then I think certainly ourselves and Liverpool will be a level above them.

Utd will struggle to beat teams because they’ll struggle to score goals. Rooney is their only top quality goalscorer and creator, and he won’t be able to do it all himself

  78. Angelos

Listen,I think Man Utd current team without Ronaldo and Tevez is quite average. But you’re sitting there comparing a bunch of champions to a group who haven’t won anything for a while, some nothing in their entire careers. All I’m saying is that Barca, Man Utd, Real, Liverpool and Chelsea spend big and they win things…we don’t spend big and punch above our weight.

  79. Honest Bill

Liverpool won the same as we did last year, that’s where their big money signings got them.

    And Chelsea won sweet F.A

  80. Stu

Liverpool are supposed to be brilliant all of a sudden but they havent won anything since the 06 FA cup. They are only a year behind us but everything is rosey on merseyside.

  81. Angelos

That’s coz Chelsea refused to spend big recently and had Scolari early on and I think Liverpool fans will be happier than we were and they’re also willing to spend big to make the next step whereas we can’t due to financial restraints…apparently.

  82. Stu

I think Roman was very harsh with Scolari. He gave him basically no money and said “win the CL with that”. Who did he get to buy? Bosingwa was agreed before Scolari got the job. So all he actually signed was Deco for a few million and Quaresma on loan.

  83. Honest Bill

But Liverpool haven’t spent yet beside on Johnson, and Man Utd have spent very little. Chelsea haven’t spent much yet, Ergo City will win it, that’s the only logical conclusion to make using that rationale.

Chelsea haven’t been spending, so all of a sudden all of their big money players don’t count as such anymore, then the same must be true of Utd and Liverpool

  84. Keyser

Liverpool are in as much debt as us and have still to build this new stadium they keep talking about.

Chelsea are finding it hard to extend their ground and if they move, because the fans own the pitch and the name or something, they’d have to change the name of the team to something like MK Chelsea.

Scholari was aked to play attractive football with the same flareless bunch Mourinho left them with, Robinho was their only hope and because of the countless millions Mourinho had wasted, Abramovich just couldn’t bring himself to splash out anymore and got outbidded.

  85. Angelos

Whatever. But just so you know that’s not my logic. Teams that spend big and aren’t afraid to take a few risks usually have a better chance than those who don’t. Obviously other factors come into play, manager, prestige, squad size and of course the most important, Luck.

  86. Honest Bill

Angelos, but Liverpool with all their spending doing no better than we did the year before for far less expense seems to contradict that argument, as does Chelsea only managing the same league position that we achieved the year befor for far less money.

Tottenham araen’t afraid to take risks, they don’t have a better chance. So the other factors must be more important.

Therefore we have the manager, prestige, squad size. now all we need is the luck, and we’re in with just as good a chance as all these other teams with their grotesquely overvalued ‘big name’ signings

  87. A

Actually read that Daily Mail article and says they expect him to sign tomorrow still, really hope that’s true rather than the guardian one which says he’s asked for a few days! I just want him to be gone

  88. Angelos

It’s easier to knock down an argument than to build one. You’re argument is that some teams have spent and failed my argument is that most that have succeeded have spent…but you have yet to show me a team recently that has not spent and won major trophies. Thst’s where the crux of the argument lies. Even though I completely appreciate your point of view and hope you get proven right this season.

  89. A

Angelos Liverpoool didn’t spend much when they won the champs league, Utd only bought carrick a couple of years ago, which is a smaller signing than Arshavin in which case we’re in a position spending wise to win the league this year by that logic?

Most teams who win things have spent, but that’s because 9 out of every ten biggest teams spends alot, there are very few teams who could ever win something who don’t go down the spending money route. It isn’t necessarily that you have to spend to win things, but that 90% of teams who have any chance of winning things spend.

Spending obviously helps you win things, but it isn’t a pre-requisite, nor is it the reason that teams have won what they have in recent years. Utd would still have won the league if they’d spent nothing this year, but they spend every year, so anytime they win the league, you could put it down to spending, though it isn’t necessarily the reason for their success

  90. Honest Bill

Depends on what time-frame you consider recent, but yes that’s true. But the only logical conclusion we can make is that spending big money on big players doesn’t win you trophies. It’s quality of players. That’s what these successful teams have used money as a means to obtain.

As Wenger has proven even within recent years, you can get quality without the huge amounts of money. Once you have that, which we do. then it is tactics, luck, confidence, team spirit etc that win you trophies. So a quality player in DM which we could obtain for around 15M, would strengthen the only weak area of our team. And we are in with as good a chance as the rest

  91. Stu

Well basically the argument is that you cant win things by living off your academy…thus you have to soend to win things. OK? Now move on because ye are going in circles.

  92. JamaicanGunnersFan

According to dailymaily at Pat, quick question, why did Ade apply for a work permit in Manchester.

I thought if had I work permit in England u could play anywhere in England.

Makes me think about something Geoff said, that maybe he didnt have one, but that wouldnt make sense

  93. A

    Nah that’s not true Stu.

To win things you need quality players, you can get quality players through a number of ways, but spending big is the easiest and most common way, but we’ve proved there are ways to do it without spending big

  94. A

No they aren’t Pat, according to the Daily Mail, so I feel dirty even talking about it, Ade offered himself to Utd, but they told him to do one.

Jamaican footballers need to apply for a work permit when they first sign for a club in the UK, then everytime they subsequently sign a new contract, be it at the same club or a new one they need to re-apply or renew their work permit, which is then valid for the period of that contract.

  95. Angelos

Carrick was a 19 mil signing and they already had a bunch of 20 mil plus players in their squad. We have none, in fact we aren’t even really adding to the squad, just replacing players like Hleb, Flamini and Diarra. If we were adding then fine but the only time we seem to bother spending is when we’re in the red form-wise or when we lose key players.

Chelsea spent – 2 league titles
Man Utd spent – 3 titles + Champs Lg
Liverpool have started spending and are on the right track atm
    Barcelona spent – treble
Real Madrid have spent and now we wait and see
You wanna place a bet on who’ll get more trophies (Real or Arsenal)?

  96. Angelos

Sorry it’s over took a while to write and didn’t read posts above. Sorry to repeat myself but it’s just how i feel. Anyways have a great night guys, catch you tomorrow.

  97. Honest Bill

What track are Liverpool on? finishing four points of the top? because we did that the season before without big spending, then look what happened.

Besides I haven’t seen Chelsea win anything of note in a while,

besides we are spending on quality, Just not blanket buying big names.

  98. JamaicanGunnersFan

Thx A and Honest Bill, so if the article is true, and they are having wage demands prob, he cant come to back to Ashburton …. or is there a way he can have two work permits

A think he will stick with what they offer rather than what he demanded seen as he got a work permit in Manchester

  99. A

We have none Angelos?! The price of the player upon signing is an irrelevance!!

You say that every team needs to spend to win things, that season Utd’s net spend was £4 million and they won the league….

We have plenty of players who are worth 20mil plus in our squad now, just because we didn’t spend that much on them doesn’t mean anything.

VP, Arshavin, Cesc, Nasri, Theo would all command 20mil plus if they were sold now.

Utd have vidic, ferdinand, rooney, and maybe carrick

Barca won the treble because of the players they brought through their academy, Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, they spent on muppets like keita, caceres and hleb who barely played!

In fact last season I’d say in losing Deco, Ronaldinho, and Zambrotta, and just bringing in Dani Alves, and Pique who actually played, they lost more 20 mil players than they gained. Only Dani Alves was a big money signing, and he’s a right back, hardly the reason they won the league.

This season I would bet on us winning the title, and I think Barca will win the spanish title, so I would bet that we’d do better than Real!
