So the news yesterday was Michael Owen, the Darren Anderton of the new millenium offered his services to us and the Mancs, well at last Arsenal got lucky for once and it seems that fergie has landed the injury prone has been from Liverpool, thank the good lord for that, can you imagine the reception he’ll get from Liverpool fans!
Well he won’t actually, because he’ll only play his customary 3 games a season so chances are he won’t be fit for that one.
Arsene says that Gallas and Adebayor will not be leaving so that means we won’t be getting a new forward and probably not a centreback, so we still have an opening in the defensive midfield spot if he decides to get the company wallet out.
The boss however did say this about Ade ‘If he does not want to stay, he will leave’ now that appalls me, he has 3 years left on his contract, so why give these huge new contracts out if they mean nothing, except of course more money for the player concerned.
Anyway, I digress, I think we have enough players if he doesn’t buy, but I still hope he has a clear out.
Other great news is we have extended Jack Wilshere’s contract much the same way he did Ramsey’s the day before, so we can at least bank on having them around until they decide to break their contracts in a few years time and bugger off to Barcelona, AC Milan or Real Madrid, still at least we are paying them well so none of you need lose any sleep over that.
I watched the Spud game at the Grove on Arsenal TV last night and with 4 minutes to go I watched with horror as Gael Clichy slipped, not to worry I thought it’s only Jenas on the ball, he’s slow and we have Alex Song right behind him, he’ll get it…oops 4-3.
Thing is I was at that game and swore I would never watch the game again… …sucker!
Anyway that reminded me why we really do need a defensive midfielder, Alex will take a couple more years to work on his speed and then we’ll be okay.
On a positive note I was thinking of a fully fit Arsenal and you know what I was getting quite excited, so I thought I would have a little look at what sort of team we could field if we had all of our players, these are my team options, what do you think?
Before I do though, I am assuming Vermaelen is the dogs, if Robin is happy with the signing, then that’s good enough for me.

You know what, they’re not bad line ups, we then have a number of super players that could come on and do a job like Ramsey, Wilshere, Denilson and Song then there wouldn’t be the pressure on their young shoulders there has been and we may see a different side fighting for silverware.
Oh and notice no 4-5-1 that was what we had when we threw away a two goal lead against the spuds, it was 4-4-2.
So without the negative thoughts we actually do have quite a strong squad that will be a year older, a lot stronger and very hungry.
What I saw in the spuds game was that Eboue, Diaby, Song and Denilson in the same team when we were winning 4-2 and cruising really doesn’t work and that must never be allowed to happen again, when those four are all playing at the same time the confidence drops and mistakes happen, they can all do a job of that there is no doubt, but not all at the same time, let them develop boss, give them cameos and it may just work.
It’s getting near that time when we need to start beleiving again, it’s getting close to when we have to accept what we have and get behind the team and if he played Coco the clown in the team I for one would be cheering him on.
And don’t say we already do or I will get hammered.

Morning all. Geoff just a note from the end of yesterdays post. I don’t remember it ever being as bad as this for Viera and Henry. I’m not saying that it wasn’t consistent but now it seems like a full on barrage every few days. I believe there is truth to this, and I believe now is the time to get the highest price for him because;
1) he will go home, he has said so and Viera and Henry never said that.
2) The money will never be this good again
3) If we go another year with rebuilding our club will be in major trouble as a global brand.
We need to build a consistent team and I don’t believe Cesc is a part of that.

Who would I sell:
Denilson – don’t believe the hype. He had a poor season, and has no exceptional ability that will set him out in years to come.
Diaby – The one that got away. Ludicrously talented at times, but has Reyes-esque stupidity on the pitch.
Eboue – Good RB, but if we need to sell him to prevent Wenger from ever using him in midfield, then so be it.
As a further note, we should keep Ade, if only because Arsene will replace him with Shitemakh.

It is a gamble but he wants the World Cup, so I have a feeling that if he can stay fit, that he will have a blinding season. Give him a tough medical and go from there. He could easily bag 20+ goals next season at Arsenal.

I dont think we should sell silvestre though. he is not worth anything in monetary terms but as a fifth choice centre back, can come into games and offer us some degree of comfort that he has been there and done it. Djourou should def be in front of him all season and hopefully we will keep both Gallas and Toure.

I seem to remember Henry being fairly useless at the beginning of his time at Arsenal. He was bought as a relative unknown, as was Vieira, as was Pires, as was Ljungberg, as was Sagna.

That’s a good point you raise Nishanth (nice name by the way, I almost called one of my sons that) about the lack of tracking back and closing down the opposition when they are in possession.
I get the feeling that Wenger finds that part of the game boring and he doesn’t put much emphasis on this in training – he’d far rather get the players practising passing triangles and weaving pretty patterns in midfield rather than the boring/dirty work of dispossessing the opposition and getting in their faces. Hate him or despise him ole 65% proof nose would always say after a hard fought victory that he was proud of his players work rate; Wenger only ever bangs on about how low the average age of his team his.
If you look at what kind of players Wenger spends money on , creative midfielders, you can see what excites him in football. I suppose he’s human in that way – we all prefer to get busy with stuff we like doing and the other tasks get relegated to the bottom of our priorities, but it’s his responsibility to strengthen the team in ALL areas, not just the bits he likes to work on.

So what GG? He still played a role for them in the tournament, scoring 3 in the groups, and a penalty in the quarters. He played most of the Semi too, after coming on for Karambeu in the first half IIRC.
He had also been young footballer of the year in France, played an integral role in the side that won Ligue 1 in 97, and was brilliant for the Monaco side in the CL the next year.

Henry was the biggest diappointment of that world cup. Sure he had been heard of, but he had been built up as the one watch, but ended up being dropped coz he wasn’t delivering. France ended up getting key goals from unexpected sources, & obviously Zidane in the Final. Henry was not a key player in France winning the World Cup.

I think that the most important thing for Arsenal’s midfield to be is interchangeable which means they all have to be able to pass and are smart… sorry but this leaves Walcott on the bench as a super-sub and no room for a big hulking DM which everyone says we’re crying out for… a DM sounds good but Do we really need a guy to sit infront of the back four? We should be getting teams on the passing carousel and killing them softly.

For me I look at ‘demand’ for the players when we signed them. Of the original list posted by ???, Pires was the only one in demand. RM were very serious contenders for a while.
Henry. For me no one wanted him imho, his WC had ended poorly, then he had a poor season at Juve, and we got him relatively cheaply because of that.

What i would like in midfield is one more defensive player who is disciplined enough to stay deeper when the others attack. So i midfielder in the middle who takes most of the defensive responsibility and the other 3 ahead of his all interchabging when in possession.

@ Geoff, Alex Song does have speed, what slows him down in C.Midfield is he doesnt have quick decision-making but more importantly his technique. Compare to when he 1st came to us, his technique has improved however there is still more room for improvement in that area. If i remember correctly, in the Spud game @ the grove, Song was ahead of the ball thus why he couldnt recover plus Jenas is actually quick, he isnt slow either.
Totally agree with you, Wardo. The average age of our starting 11 was 22-23 the whole of last season, which is the lowest in the league and yet we managed to finish 4th in EPL, reached in the semi final of Europe’s elite cup competition i.e. Champions League and also in the semi final of the FA cup.
I’m not saying we should only try to finish 4th but if this group of player remains together, that time is not far when we’ll be untouchables and invincibles again. We have every right to be positive and believe in our team.

I think we can win this year, it depends on a few keys issues rather than signings, the team need to be trained or to play in a more compact manner once they have taken a lead, it really is that simple.
Tactically the whole squad could and would benefit from better coaching on that aspect particulary from a defensive point of view.
We have more match winners at our disposal than we did last season when we scored a comparable amount of goals as Man U. I might even say we have more match winners than any team in the prem.
I think Diaby will come good as will Denilson and Song. Castigate me if you will but I like Diaby as a player and think we have a beast in the kid waiting to be unleashed.

Geoff- Maybe he`s a little short but so is Arshavin. If he bulks up it should`nt be a problem. His technical ability is better than most players i have seen at that age. I don’t think number 2 ddm, the youth team is probably the best place for him in actual fact if he’s ever going to become a manager. It’s really hard for someone to step up from number 2 to number one because of relationships with the players changing etc, so it could stifle his ability to take over. I would say maybe he should step up to reserve manager, but in actual fact he’ll probably get better experience as a youth manager, because the reserve team is a bit of a joke players coming and going all the time and such like.
Whether Bould will end up as a number one or number two though only time will tell. I’d think that Bergy would be the better manager in the end, but again you never know, as was shown with Adams! Hopefully Bergkamp will take over as manager of Ajax in a year, get a year or two experience under his belt then come to the Emirates taking over from Wenger with Bould as his number 2.

When you thank them and offer them a tip, they’ll say ‘No’ and instead ask you for a lift to another store, in my case Dunnes on Childers Road . You agree and they both get in the backseat.

Mystery CDM? I don’t know but there are plenty of quality CDM out there. I’d prefer one from Ligue 1 since its the most similar to the PL. If not that then someone from the Bundesliga, although there aren’t many hardworkers there that I can think of from the top of my head.

The way I feel about Semi-finals is that you may as well go out in the 3rd Round/1st knockout stage and we would have done in both competitions if we had met decent opposition.

We’re not a big club and neither is Roma, end of. Both teams are tiny compared to their rivals. If you’re going to bring up history also remember that the PL has never, and never will be, as big as Serie A(especially) or La Liga were in their prime.

It is a long time pat, but the fact that his endurance test results are superior to prior to the injury is very promising though! Having the last few weeks of the season, the whole summer, and pre season to get back into the swing of things is as good timing as you can get though, I really hope he returns and by the Emirates Cup shows he’s back to his best. If he is he could be a MASSIVE player for us this season
