Usmanov speaks, we should listen. And I have an idea…

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So Usmanov has spoken at long last and has urged Arsenal to buy grown ups in order to compete with the top 3. At last a shareholder that talks sense.

As an aside I would put Kolo back in as a defensive midfielder, he has more pace than the other three, can tackle better and has a fierce shot. Only if the superstar we need doesn’t arrive though, Kolo is not a centre back I’m afraid, I love him, but it’s not working out.

Will the manager listen? Who knows but as the Mirror said today, so what if Wenger won two doubles, Joan Collins was a babe once. Think about that one, you can’t live off past glories forever.

I see their point, I’ve been thinking about our youngsters and what Wenger says about them when they improve, Gael Clichy and Flamini are probably the only two players to have come through after years of watching them struggle. So it may work now and again, but is it worth it, does it hold us back whilst waiting.

Arsene has played Song, Denilson and Diaby all season and arguably Song has improved, but he’s still not good enough for a title challeging team and the other two are nowhere near so I have an idea.

This is a radical solution and it goes back to the days of Graham, Clough and Paisley, it was something they lived by and was phenomenally successful.

It’s called the RESERVES, it’s a strange concept, but hear me out first and see what you think.

So you take players that aren’t good enough for the first team, players like Song, Diaby, Denilson, Ramsey, Wilshere and Fabianski. Players that aren’t far off but still not there yet. You then play them in the reserves week in week out, if there are no fixtures, then arrange them, that way they will either improve over the season or they won’t, they will be playing regularly which is good, rather than coming off the bench and getting abuse because they are having a shitter and it’s no their fault because they don’t play enough.

They then have the incentive to shine and get into the first team, that’s where players like Paul Merson and Perry Groves came from. Also use the reserves to bring back injured players. We only need our third choice keeper on the bench because they are very rarely used, Fabianski needs to play if he is to improve, sitting on the bench won’t do it, that’s for sure.

So putting those players in the reserves will leave room for at least 3 new signings, if those signings are truly world class, then we can win the league next year, we would also win the Carling cup because we would have a decent reserve side that play together on a regular basis.

Will it work, yes of course it will, how many European cups did Liverpool, and Forest win in those days eh!

Have a think Grovers, this could save Wengers blushes, give us the new players we crave and at least win us the Carling cup.

If we have Arshavin, Walcott, Vela, Bendtner, Dudu, RVP play as strikers and second strikers next season I think both positions are filled. We need strength on the R/L midfield so Walcott and Arshavin can play further up. If Rosicky ever recovers he would fit in nicely but we still need quality on the left. Zhirkov would be a good fit as Arshavin himself suggested.

  2. Maciek

But will someone buy a striker so lazy as Ade?I think that if any Club offers 15 mil., he should be sold.

  3. gooner786

Arsenal first-team coach Boro Primorac has revealed that the club have been monitoring the progress of Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.

The 22-year-old striker has been in impressive form for the Die Wolfe this season, scoring 13 goals in 22 appearances to help the club reach second place in the Bundesliga.

“We [will] keep our eyes on him,” Primorac is quoted as saying in German sports magazine Kicker-Sportmagazin.

“He is a striker able to make it in the Premier League.”

It is thought that Spanish club Sevilla are also interested in the Bosnia-Herzegovina international, who has scored 6 goals in 13 caps, although Wolfsburg appear determined to keep hold of him.

“Edin is under contract for two more years and likes being at Wolfsburg,” his agent Alen Augustincic is quoted as saying.

“We are hoping they will win participation in the Champions League for next season.”

Manager Felix Magath remarked, “We want to keep our team at our club, as many players as possible. I am confident Dzeko will be a Wolfsburg player next season, too.”

  4. LAzer

United are not sure if they will keep Tevez for 20 mill. I think if they were stupid enough to pay 30 mill for Berba they should definitely keep Tevez at 20 mill. Therefore they won’t be adding a starting striker as they already have 4.

  5. gooner786

Maciek – We need to sign Dzeko A.S.A.P because Wolfsburg are joint top of the Budesliga with Bayern and are sure to qualify for the CL. If Dzeko has a good run then he’s value is going to double, then we have no fucking chance.

  6. gooner786

That’s what people said about Arshavin..the rest is history..sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate my friend.

“He has earned the nickname ‘the Russian Ronaldinho’ for his dribbling skills and audacity.

He won the 2004-05 UEFA Cup with PFC CSKA Moscow, scoring in the final itself. He mainly plays as an attacking left winger although he can play as a left back or left wingback. His trickery and abundance of creativity makes him one of CSKA Moscow’s and Russia’s most prized assets. He is also a very hard working player who often tracks back and is a solid marker and sliding tackler.

His goal against Hamburger SV in the UEFA Champions League 2006-07 was chosen as best goal of the competition by UEFA Magazine “Goal”. His goal involves him chipping the ball past an opponent then again past a second opponent before dribbling from the half way line into the penalty box and shooting past the goal keeper. He made 6 appearances in the group stages, scoring once. Reports suggest he could be moving to Chelsea F.C. for £15m in the summer, and more recently, to Liverpool F.C..

    International

Zhirkov has played 28 times for the Russia national football team, often starting in a 3-5-2 formation in the left winger position, and was called up Russia’s squad for Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland where he played as an out and out leftback often making runs forward to support and front two. He was named to the UEFA Euro 2008 Team of the Tournament.

In October 2008, Zhirkov was nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, along with 29 others including compatriot Andrei Arshavin.”

If we get this guy, let Diaby go, allow Nasri to play left or center mid and move Arshavin up top our midfield and strike scenario is pretty much resolved. Walcott should be used both as a striker and right mid if Rosicky recovers. As the DM I would continue with Denilson/Song and instead buy a CB and get rid of Silvestre. I hope Wenger’s solution is NOT to see Senderos as a new buy but if we had to live with Gallas/Toure/JD/Senderos with all of them settling for a bench spot if necessary I would settle for that. If we can add Sakho to that list I would be glad.

So my recommendation, buy Zhirkov and Sakho, keep Dzeko in line for the future in case Bendtner, Walcott, Arshavin, RVP, Dudu, Vela cannot be productive enough (I think we have enough up top with that group though).

  8. Faceman

i think the problem we have with this squad is nobody really knows their correct position.

now wenger is messing around with playing cesc as a support striker, nasri as a holding midfielder and nikki b as a left winger.

  9. LAzer

We should sell Ade, buy Zhirkov and Sakho. I wish someone who had some say at Arsenal read grove all the time. Agree with your point about so many being played out of position faceman.

  10. Faceman

I like Sakho a lot, he could become a very good player, very quickly.

would love it if we signed him ahead of chiellini or hangeland.

  11. kirby

feel helpless we cant do anything as fans nobody at arsenal seems to have the bollocks to tell arsene that we are weak in a number of areas sort it out

i just really hope he is just saying this same old bullshit because anyone with half a brain can see our squad is not good enough even the arsene knows best brigade!!

so he should know in his head that he needs a sort out i hope…

  12. LAzer

Sakho was made captain at PSG at 17. As a 4th choice CB I think he would be ideal. Here is wiki on him.

“Sakho started his career at Paris FC before moving Paris Saint-Germain at age 11. Sakho was originally a striker, but due to PSG’s youth team having fewer defenders than strikers he was moved into a more defensive role. He can also operate at left back, as well as a left wing back.

He made his first-team and Ligue 1 debut on October 20, 2007 against Valenciennes FC.Sakho also captained the side on his debut making him the youngest ever captain of Paris Saint-Germain at the age of 17 years and 8 months and also the youngest player to ever captain a side in Ligue 1. In the following match, against Olympique Lyonnais, he was named captain again. He scored his first goal for PSG in a Ligue 1 match against Saint-Étienne on February 14, 2009. The goal gave PSG a 1-0 lead. PSG would eventually win the match 2-1.

    International career

Sakho captained the French U-17 team at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which was held at South Korea, and led France into the quarterfinals where they lost to Spain on penalties. He is currently playing on the France national under-21 football team.”

He should be quite a lot cheaper then Hangeland or Chiellini. Out of those two I like Hangeland more for sure. The key is to convince Toure/Gallas they will not always both have a starting spot.

  13. Faceman

he will sort it out this summer, of that i am sure… he seems a little more dismissive of some of his players recently and the signs for decent reinforcements are ominous.

look at how we feel about recent spankings by manure and chelski…. wenger is arsenal through and through… he must be sui-fucking-cidal.

consider what he has already won in england, he created the greatest club team in british league football with the invincibles….. he won’t take another season of crap.

wenger will be back with a vengence.

  14. gooner786

Werder Bremen’s Diego has signed for Juventus in a €25million (£22.3m) deal, according to the midfielder’s agent.

Giacomo Petralito claims the 24-year-old Brazil international has agreed a five-year contract with the Italian giants and will complete the transfer at the end of the season.

Diego has been an integral part of Uefa Cup finalists Werder’s side since arriving from Porto in 2006 and he has been linked with Bayern Munich in the past.

But the player’s representative, Petralito, claims his client has opted to leave Germany in order to make a big-money move to Serie A.

Petralito told Kicker: “Diego has signed for Juventus. Everything happened last Wednesday.”

Diego, who is suspended for the Uefa Cup final against Shakhtar Donetsk, has scored 33 goals in 87 matches. He has also won 38 caps for Brazil and scored seven times.

  15. Stu

Hey all… wazzuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuupppppp Sorry, it had to be done

We NEED to buy defenders. So badly its not even funny!
But we should buy Dzeko too. ;)

  16. Stu

I was thinking that we should go shopping for a defender in Russia or Ukraine or some tough league like that where its cold. It worked for the mancs, chavs and dippers. Why cant it work with us?

  17. Stu

BBK, obviously i would prefer us to buy defenders but we both know it aint gonna happen because last time i checked Wenger was manager.

  18. goonerpress

This winger you guys are on about, tracking back and stuff, its either Ribery or Zirkhov. Ribery helps out a lot and Zirkhov is LB/LM so is always tracking back. He is a very classy player.

Now on to this striking headache we are having. Dzeko, Pogrebnyak or Gomez? Gomez I am in two minds about. He always impresses in the Bundesliga but fails on the international stage and in big games. Pogrebnyak knows Arshy inside out and would be very cheap. Can score with his left, right, head, free kicks you name it. He is amazing. Dzeko, Dzeko, Dzeko. He is something else. Brilliant fucking player. I reckon he could hack the premiership very well but may now come with a very big price tag because of his rep. Im talking around 15mil.

  19. Stu

    Goonerpress, nicely said.
Im not too keen on Gomez either. He is a no.
Dzeko has really only been good this season although when say good i mean fantastic. He is of a good age and has been heavily on form all season for club and country. Plus the club have reportedly shown great interest in him.

Then there’s Pogrebnyak. He would be dirt cheap if we buy him in the summer, or free should we wait until November. As you said he can score any type of goal and already has a good relationship with out new starman.

Its a tough choice between the latter 2. I hope Wenger picks one of them because i truly cant hack another season of Adebayor!

  20. goonerpress

I agree Stu. Tbh I see our centre back being Hangeland or Senderos. DM being either Flamini/Cana or someone from France. Striker being either Dzeko/Pogrebnyak. All these players are affordable.

  21. Stu

And all of them except Flamini are huge fuckers! We badly need height back in the team too. Its awful when your squads biggest players are your 2 strikers.

  22. goonerpress

BBK you seen Kolodin shoot? I would never get in the way. Keeper can never do anything about it. Either dips in, slightly over or hits the bar. Bullet shot. If his shot hits a keeper in the face, the ball would be sure to come out of the keepers other end, whole.

  23. peachesgooner

Hey guys, just passing through – that team of defenders is awesome gp – not sure they’d be up for Wengerball though………I’m not entirely certain le boss remembers about Wengerball either…..:)

  24. Stu

Wengerball is an myth now. Wenger has forgotten exactly what it is but just remembers that it has something to do with passing so just sends his teams out to pass all the time and see if it works! Bellend!

  25. goonerpress

haha PG. Wengerball or not, the ball would always be theirs. They would make sure of it lol. Stu the thing that kind of consoles me about Wenger maybe not going in for defender is Senderos. He is still our player and will definately come back if we don’t buy another huge mofo. I still miss him and I think he has learned a lot up in Milano and could be worth another chance.

  26. Ja_Gunner

My vote is for Progreb…because of the Russain link up.

Plus I feel Dzeko will stay one more year at Wolfsburg because they are goin into the champions league.

I dont think United will sign anyone big this summer….but the summer of 2010 United will probably go for Dzeko or Benzema.

    I vote for Pogreb because

    1. Russain Link up
    2. Scores left foot, right foot, headers
    3. Takes powerful free kicks He could give VanPersie some competetion for those left footed free kicks.

  27. Stu

Senderos sholdnt have left in the first place but since he did i sure hope he learned how to deal without pace from Maldini, Nesta etc.

  28. goonerpress

JG I agree. And we can get Ade to kindly fuck off in the summer and negotiate with Zenit to have the Pogster for 2-3m. If not, wait till Nov and get him free. Use Nik and Dudu till then.

  29. Stu

How many free kicks has Pogrebnyak scored tho? Because i dont watch the russian league, for obvious reasons, and the only clip i have seen him score a free kick was against Bayern where the wall jumped over it.
    Anyone?

  30. goonerpress

    Adebayor out for 20m
    Silvestre out for 1m

Senderos (Free) Hangeland (7m) Pogrebnyak (Free) Flamini (6m)/Cana (10m)

13/17m well spent Stu lol. All of those players for one lazy CUNT?

  31. goonerpress

I think we should do a couple of deals with Milan.

    Senderos returns

Adebayor goes to them for 10m plus Flamini
Gourcuff comes to us for 5m plus Diaby

5m left for Pogrebnyak or wait till Nov and get him free and the board can wipe their arses with the 5m left.

  32. Stu

They can fucking have him. Abouseless is one of the biggest wastes of space ever. Along with Silvestres fivehead!

  33. goonerpress

Why the fuck did Diego go to fucking Juventus? What a waste. Hes an incredible player. Him and Iniesta are the most underrated world beaters in my opinion. And then the fucker turns around and goes to Juve. Fuck him, hes shit lol.

  34. goonerpress

Silvestre, Diaby, Adebayor are dead to me. They can all score hattricks against the Mancs, I still won’t like them. Cos that will mean Wenger will keep em.

  35. Stu

Juve are a great club imo. Sure they had the scandal thing but other than that i like ‘em. Lots of classy players. And Diego is likely to be Nedveds replacement.

  36. Ja_Gunner

Stu there is a complation which shows him scoring 3 free kicks….

He is not a curl kicker..he is a power kicker..but atleast it gives some variety.

Also if Dennis Kolodin has any speed at all…we coulod give him a try for CB.

    He is big.

He also has a rifle shot on him…he doesnt advance far up field he just lines them up from 40+ yards…so we dont have to worry too much about him being out of position.

He is playing for not such a big club in Russia so therefore I dont think he would mind being rotated with Gallas/Kolo…He has never played in the UEFA cup or CL so I am sure he would come even if it means he only get 25-30 games for the season. He would be glad to be on a much bigger stage…what do you guys think….the only thing i am not sure about is his pace..but from what I remember of the euros the whole russian team is pretty quick.

  37. goonerpress

BBK hes not always in the top 10 footballers in the world. I believe he has that quality. People in Spain don’t talk about him much (only Madrid and Barca fans), they have been for the past 2 weeks.

  38. BOY BETTER KNOW

that’s for sure g.p i think more people will start to take note of him now,iv’e always rated him t.b.h,only if cesc had his pace he could follow in his footsteps i think

  39. Stu

I remember Kolodin from the euros. He is a big fucker but he also used to be a striker, hence why he loves to shoot, take free kicks and penalties.

I think we should steer clear of defenders that started out as strikers. Gallas and Toure both started out as forwards and JD was a midfielder. Silvestre is just shite. The only natural defender we have is Senderos and seeing as most fans hate him i cant see him being taken back…unfortunately.

  40. Stu

Why is he number 8 if he is a defender. He also loves to shoot from a ridiculas range. He would get a bollocking off Wenger after every game.

  41. Ja_Gunner

Stu..because a player was a striker doesnt mean he wil go rampages about.

When I watched him Russia all he did was wait for rebounds and shoot from long distance..I see nothing wrong with that…we need that variation in our game…because we have become so predictable.

As long as he stays deep I think we wouldbe ok. We just need someone who he good and doesnt mind sitting on the bench/being rotated.

I mean when we play passing teams in Europe..we could play Kolo and Gallas….but in the prem when we play Bolton Stoke etc…we can drop one of Gallas r Toure and play the Monster defender(whoever he is)

This way he may get 25 games for the season or so.

I just suggested Kolodin because of his size…..but in truth I dont know if he dominates in the air.

  42. goonerpress

Imagine the scene, CL Semi-Final repeat. Man Utd vs Arsenal at OT. First leg ended up at 0-0. Ronaldo scores against the run of play. We try and try but we just cannot get the equiliser. In the 89th minute, Arshavin collects the ball, skips past 3 passes to Kolodin who shoots from 40 yards, hits the bar and Pogrebnyak follows it up with a header top left corner. Man Utd are left stunned, Arsenal go through on away goals.

  43. Stu

Thats another thing i would like to be fixed for next season. We dont score nearly enough from corners or set pieces. We dont even threaten to threaten from corners. We get at least 10 every game and its basicaly just a pass into the keepers hands. How hard is it to get organised from corners and at defending. Wenger is truly clueless at these aspects of the game.

  44. freduardo

i remember watching that game, Russia had me out of my seat so many times. Arsh was amazing.. that Kolodin fella shot from everywhere!

  45. BOY BETTER KNOW

not like back in the day is it stu when bouldy used to get the flicks at the near post then adams come charging

  46. Ja_Gunner

Kolodin would be perfect for all those corner clearances.

The ball comes loose through the middle and he just rockets it at the goal.

But again I am not sure about how he defends…Maybe Wenger can ask Andrei and Guus about Kolodin.

  47. Stu

Incidently Hangeland recently said that he would consider joining a big club as one of their 3 centre backs. We should get him in or Kolodin is he is good enough.

  48. Ja_Gunner

The Kolodin thing may work because truly…who knew about Skertel before Liverpool got him.

Who really knew about Vidic? also Ivanovic

Eastern Europe may be the answer….I say Dennis Kolodin lol even though I have no idea how he defends lol…

Germany has a 6ft 3 guy called Westermann…Arsene needs to check these guys out.

Or maybe Senderos is back better than ever?

  49. Ja_Gunner

Lol here is another thing…if we sign Kolodin.

Van Der Sar would be shaking in his boots when he sees him..Van Der sar’s night mares will become reality if has to face Kolodin twice or more for the year lol.

We could score 6 past United with Van Der Sar having his mind on Kolodin.

  50. A

i dunno ja – don’t think you can compare to skrtel or vidic because whilst they were unknown they were young for defenders.

    i’d love sendy back

  51. Stu

Ja, i dont think Westermann is that tall. He isnt a CB either but he can fill in there.

Coadsi, Gallas is number 10 because that was the only available number when he joined. And he said he didnt want 3 because he didnt want to be seen as a left back. So the prock took 10. 8 is odd for an international defender because numbers only go up to 23 for tournaments and starting defenders usually get 2,3,4,5 or 6. 8 is a midfielders number, it makes no sense that he would have it.

  52. Faceman

Anybody up for storming this event…

Arsene Wenger will face angry Arsenal shareholders at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow evening after agreeing to a question-and-answer session.

He can expect a rough ride over the lack of progress after promising that his new young team would be the equals of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Although the club vet supporters’ questions when Wenger appears at the club’s AGM, tomorrow’s hour-long event at the stadium’s Royal Oak restaurant will not have the usual restrictions, even though supporters feel the team have slipped further behind United and Chelsea this season.

  53. Stu

And Skrtel, Vidic and maybe Ivanovic too were already playing european football. Vidic set records with Serbia, Skrtel was apparently very highly rated when he went to Zenit and Ivanovic cost 9million. Hardly unknown defenders. And if Kolodin was that good then someone outside Russia would have already gone in for him.

  54. gnarleygeorge9

I don’t know whether I can do another off season on here analysing every potential signing Arsenal should look @, only for Le Gaffer to come out in July @ say Silvestre will suffice; we have enough strikers; etc. It will do my head in

  55. Ja_Gunner

    A

I think Kolodin can be compared to Sktel and Ivanovic

All three were in the Russian premier league
Kolodin is only 2 years older than them

    Kolodin born 1982
    Skrtel and Ivanovic 1984

So I think they can be compared…

  56. A

gnarley we have too many strikers, and wenger has already said he’s not after a striker, for obvious reasons

  57. Stu

Vidic was already an international rock when United bought him. And they were scouting him for more than 2 seasons before finally signing him.

Faceman, what makes you think we were after him?

  58. Stu

Sell RVP and Ade and get Dzeko and/or Pogrebnyak! Simples.

And get Denisov while we are over in St.Petersburg.

  59. Faceman

Stu – i heard somebody connected to the club say it either during the manure game or the chelski game, on tv.

    Alan Smith possibily.

  60. Ja_Gunner

    Stu not necessarily.

Look at Arshavin..why didnt some other club pick him up already?

The fact that we didnt know about Kolodin does not mean he is not good…the players in the Russain league do not get the exposure….as other leagues.

  61. A

i’d much rather have eduardo, vp, bendtner, vela, theo, arshavin banging in the goals than sign a dzeko or pogrebnyak!

  62. Stu

I dont see how Smudge would know about the scoutings of arsenal. Does he work for the club doing anything like that?

  63. gnarleygeorge9

    A

You know what i mean though, Pedro & Geoff had something like 200 plus names up that were linked to The Club & we signed Nasri & Bitchslap. Ok, & we got AA23 4 months later ;)

  64. Faceman

Stu – come off it, are you for real?

He is still very much connected to the club, its not unsual for an ex player of a club to stil have ties with it.

  65. goonermichael

The window hasn’t opened yet. We’re all going to go mental. Wenger better sign someone early and bin adecantscore

  66. Ja_Gunner

Well it seems our defensive scouts are no good then.

Or Wenger was only looking for fast Defenders..which complement our style…but he forgot other teams would exploit our lack of height/aerial presence.

  67. gnarleygeorge9

I watched Romford Ray on Football Matters, & he said exactly the same things as is said on here. A big CB, a replacement type for Paddy V, etc. If its universal amongst the Gooner family, why, oh why doesn’t AW see it too :(

  68. Ja_Gunner

A…my suggestion is to sell Ade..and go into the season with RVP, Eddy, Theo, Vela, Bendy

Then in January sign up Pogreb..because by that time maybe RVP or others might be injured..and fixtures get congested…so we sign up Pogreb(for free) for the run in….
He would choose us first because of Arshy

So he would bolster the squad just like AA did last time…but we need to sort out the midfield and defense in the summer for sure.

What do you think of that plan?

This is also why I suggested a right winger to take over Walcott’s spot

  69. Stu

Kolodin isnt unknown. We all know him from the russian team.

Whoever we sign better be fucking quaeitee tho….

  70. A

i’d be up for that ja, but it depends, if vp and eduardo have stayed fit and banging in the goals, rotating with bendy and vela, not to mention arshavin and theo smashing in the goals from out wide then there’s be no place for him even in the squad!

  71. Stu

Bendtner and Eduardo as first choice. RvP And Vela ad backs ups. And Walcott and AA getting the assists.

Having said that tho i think AA should be used behind the striker. He does it for Russia and did it for Zenit.
And he played behind Pogrebnyak for both. Pog is the answer. Bring him in in November and sell someone in Jan.

  72. A

who though stu?! i’d much prefer all of bendy, eduardo, vp, and vela to pog, certainly wouldn’t sell one of them to make way for him!

  73. Faceman

    i would agree, ja

eddy, theo, bendy, robin and carlos are enough to go into the new season.

we need to bolster on the defensive midfield/ centre back areas.

collecting 25M odd for Badey and investing that with our transfer kitty will allow the possible signing of a top notch centre back and a nutter to bodyguard cesc and co in the middle of the park.

  74. Coadsi

gg make that 1239568 votes for him to leave. if i was wenger for a day and a half i would sell ade for sure, if RvP does not sign by june 1 sell him as well. the likes of diaby and peanut head out the door is a sure thing…………the next half day i prolly would take reading le grove and not caring what you guys think
