The entertaining \ boring balance was restored. Ratings and Review

Arsenal versus Boro’… hardly the highlight of the football calender. Middlesborough replaced Wimbledon as the team I least like to go and see Arsenal play each year. There is something extremely boring about them… I am sure I watched an interview with Steve Gibson once where he complained profusely that his club finished around mid table most years, yet still received the minimum coverage for games in the league.

Steve, that is because your teams over the seasons have mostly been very dull. Your star player, who attracted a bid of £15million from Spurs (Says it all) is the most over hyped player in Premiership history… I had to check the team sheet twice to make sure he was actually playing yesterday… apparently he was… and apparently he is very, very average. He has all the flair of Tony Adams… actually, that is probably unfair on Tony!

I hope when you reflect on your season you look at Gareth Southgate and realise what a horriffic mistake you made. I must be honest, I am looking at a piece of toast that is more inspirational. How do club Chairman interview these peple and think…

‘This is the guy to take my club to the next level and beyond!’

Anyway, enough moaning about poor recruitment decisions… onto the game.

It really was a timid affair. Arsenal went into the game knowing the outcome, the fans arrived at the stadium knowing the outcome… Boro’ knew they were beaten when they arrived on the team bus to see Gareth reading a football for dummies manual whilst clutching a pink comfort blanket.

We knocked the ball around casually, maybe a little to casually. We were sloppy at times… clearly with one eye on the Manchester United game in the week. We set up with a 4-5-1… the boss rested key players that would play in the week… Song was ousted for Denilson, Adebayor was benched for Bendtner and Arshavin was given a run out because he wont play in the week.

It took a while for us to find out stride, Arshavin sneaked the ball throught to Nik, he laid the ball superbly back into the path of the Russian who ran through into the box, cut back and passed the ball across the box to Cesc… who buried it past Jones. 1-0 it stayed until half time. (See here).

The second half was even more lack lustre from a Boro’ point of view. I can imagine Southgate had a teary breakdown in the changing rooms, perhaps hysterically telling his team that they were doomed… because Boro’ came out with an even more negative attitude to the game in the second half. Arsenal really took over the possession. Aliadiere went close when he waltzed through our defence, latched onto the long ball, but finished with all the precision he used to when he played for Arsenal.

Then came the killer blow… Emmanuel Eboue, the visionary, the legend… laid on an inch perfect pass through to Cesc who pretty much walked through the Boro’ defence, walked round the keeper and slotted the ball home with embarrassing ease. The ball rolled into the net in slow motion (See here)… Game over… Arsenal were done, Boro’ were finally out of my life forever… I could go home and start to get nervous about playing a real team.

Almunia: Made a tasty save from Aliadiere in the second half. His handling was good, his calmness appreciated. Good to have him back. 7

Gibbs: I really like young Kieron. He is powerful for one so young he is a good defender and he looks a bit special in the final third. All he has to do is maintain his concentration the whole way through the game. 7.5

Toure: Mopped up pretty easily today. I am still concerned that even a team as poor as the one on show today can fire a ball through the middle of the park and get through on goal. I guess we’ve just got to keep our fingers crossed in the week. 7

Silvestre: Better than he was against Liverpool, but then again… how could he not be playing against a striker as blunt as Aliadiere? 7

Eboue: Had a much tidier game than he did against the Chav’s. His favoured position is right back, but I still don’t really rate him there against top opposition, clearly that is why the coach bought Sagna. His set up for Cesc was sublime… a real top pass. 7

Nasri: Starting to find his position, starting to impose his style on the team… and starting to look dangerous. I am excited about Nasri and I’m hoping he’s going to develop into the player we all hope he will. 8

Arshavin: I love watching a player who wants the ball at his feet every minute of the game. He is world class. Today wasn’t his greatest game in the red and white of Arsenal… he hit an air shot, dragged a shot so wide, it hit the corner flag… he even misplaced a 5 yard pass… but the quality in his final ball is amazing. Another assist, another entertaining day out watching one of the best players in the world. 8.5

Theo: I keep being told that he is going to become the best player in the world, but I’m really struggling to see how at the moment? He doesn’t seem to have the tricks to go round people… ask yourself this… what would he be without pace? Hopefully we’ll see a Song like development from our young winger… hopefully. 6.5

Cesc: I’m still not sure about playing him in the hole. I know he scored 2 goals, but I always feel he plays better in that deep lying role, picking out passes. He is great player though, so he will develop into whatever role he is asked to fulfill… and his two goals were great. It just doesn’t look like he is enjoying himself there. 8

Denilson: I could write the same thing about Denilson every time. He is tidy, compact and carbon efficient. He doesn’t waste many balls, but he rarely does anything exciting with them either. That is why when he makes a bad pass it’s highlighted… because he is so cautious in his play, you feel he shouldn’t make any bad passes. I didn’t think he had a good game today, but he didn’t have a bad one… the epitome of average. That’s not a complaint, I just can’t think of a better way to describe him? 7

Bendtner: I wasn’t really impressed with him. It’s his nonchalant attitude and his sloppy play that grates me. He set up the move for the first goal, but other than that, I thought he was very poor. He perked up a bit on the second half… but he needs to do better and he does need to start finding the back of the net more often. 6

So… next up Manchester United… whose excited?

Mayank/Franchise, dont remember that goal. Must be because i dont tend to remember the bad times much. I mustn;t have watched the replays of that game hence my forgetting it.

  2. kevin

Stu, in each season every team have a freak game, in our case 2. Where the game is out of control. Both by the manager, and players. Yes they had five in the obx, hoever they also have 3 outside. It’s was riduclous.

  3. nishanth

Diaby might shine if he plays behind the striker role. Will be wasted on left and will affect the whole teams balance

  4. Mayank

hope we have a third crazy game of the season at OT..a 4-4 won’t be a bad result to take to the emirates!or maybe 5-4 with us scoring in the 90 sumthin minute like against tottenham

  5. Stu

Even still Kevin. For their 5 in the box we should have had at least 6. The back 4 and 2 CMs. Thats a given. Its basic defending that you have more defenders in there than they have attackers. Same with responsibilities. 1 player defends the cross while 1 watches their man.
Defending is easy if you work on it and we all know that Arsene doesnt allow defensive training.

  6. Franchise

Arsenal dont know how to defend when pressured by top teams. only arsenal wld be knocked out of the CL after equalising 2-2 at anfield. only arsenal would draw 4-4 with spurs at home with a 2 goal advantage in the the 89th min, how about chelsea away last season, united away, liverpool this year. we dont know what to do when we are pressure then we start to panic

  7. kevin

Stu agreed. But i’m just trying to back the boys. I honestly beleive had it been united playing the same result would of occured. As i already said it was a freak game, completely out of control.

Im just nervous, coz we have united coming up.

  8. nishanth

It is also the manner in which we concede the goal.It is not like someone steps up and scores a screamer or anything. Its also got to do with the mentality of the team. When we are goal ahead with some 4 minutes left we think of how we can score another one rather than trying to protect the lead. There is nothing wrong with another one but first priority should be to protect the lead

  9. nishanth

Kevin it is not that i am critcizing the team.I am fucking nervous about that match.I just hate united.Just can’t stand them.

  10. Mayank

we all keep raving about terry and carrhager(well maybe not raving)..but the so called rock solid defenders are only rock solid if you play a deep backline like pool or chelsea..chelsea tried to play the attacking game and failed pool are trying it and can’t keep a clean sheet..you need fast runner to get back in our sort of system..and they are normally not the best defenders

  11. kevin

Agrred united disgust me, they will be punished. Fergie will suffer a heart attack when nasri glides past 7 players, and smahses it into the roof of the net.

  12. Stu

Before Collocini arrived at Newcastle i thought he was a pretty decent defender but the more i see of him the worse he looks. Cant tackle, get beaten too much and poor positioning.

  13. Stu

I’d rather the ball hit the back f the net because when a player roofs the ball it sometimes seems that he has missed it. Dont like when that happens.

  14. irishgunner

Ha ha BBK – it’ll go up on Newsnow later so hopefully will get more reads, I’ll keep people updated on the results

  15. nishanth

We should target VDS also.He is just okay. The clean sheet record they achived was because of ferdinand and vidic. He has looked shaky in the recent matches

  16. BH1

    Agreed Franchise.

No composure at the back when required. Positional sense at times is laughable.

If we get out of Old Trafford only conceding 2, we will be doing well. We really should have conceded 6 or 7 against Liverpool, and them without Gerrard.

  17. nishanth

I know stu.He made a good penalty save against west ham but really struggled against them when they put the ball in.He won’t have those kind of problems against barcelona. When it comes to corners barcelona are just woeful

  18. Stu

I cant wait to watch the barca forward line making shit of the whole chelski defence.
“The JT spread” will fail misserably everytime.

  19. Confidentgoner

Aw’squad, my best guess, cos am sure he reads the threads.

    Alumina

    sagna toure dj gibbs

    Theo Cesc Song Nasri

    Ade Bentner/Vela

Think he will really go for it from the blast.

  20. nishanth

If bosingwa plays as RB then henry is going to rip him apart.Barca’s defense is not that great though.Don’t think they will able to handle drogba

  21. choy

    evening all..

the lads have to play their heart out on wednesday. Utd are tough, but I do believe that on our day we are the better team.
Our brand of football is better. We saw that last time at OT even though we lost, if we had a clinical striker we would have surely put the game to bed by HT.

So facking Ade better be on the top of his game, he needs to show us that is he worth the red and white!!!

  22. kevin

nishanth. Thank you finally someone who see’s vds for who he is. IMO almunia is better, i promise you when diaby shoots on sight, the goals will come.

  23. nishanth

I hope portsmouth play like this next week against us.We don’t exactly require a tough match ahead of the second leg

  24. choy

I think he will go for it irish.. he has realized the importance of an away goal since PSV knocked us out…

  25. irishgunner

Stu – He said we will be “audacious” in attack cos the need for an away goal does that

I agree with Choy he might shock us and go for it

  26. nishanth

I was watching juve play reggina earlier. It is hard to believe that Nedved is 36.Class act.He never stops running.A top professional. When juve got relegated i hoped we would make a move for him.Surely our players could have learned so much from him.One of my favourite players

  27. irishgunner

Nis – Nedved is retiring the end of the season. i think plenty of clubs were in for him he just wanted to stay.

  28. nishanth

I know.He is a top top players and nobody talks about him or gives him any credit. He stayed with them even when they got relegated. He is still pretty good.He is fucking unluck though.Always gets injured at a crucial point in the match. Also missed the UCL final due to a booking which is totally unfair. It is a ridiculous rule.Unless it is a red card i don’t think anyone should miss a final

  29. Stu

Apparently Juve are looking at Leto as a replacement for Nedved when he retires.
Thats almost a big of a joke as them being after Kuyt for 28million.

  30. leon

i dont know if i am missing something but is edwardo injured he has not played weeks did not evon make the bench in last game i would thought wenger would give run out at 45 munites

  31. irishgunner

no one knows what id going on with Eduardo Leon, he was on the bench at Anfield and not there at all against Boro

  32. nishanth

Juve are run by jokers. They bought poulsen for 10 million and amauri for 15 million. They were also thinking of selling chiellini. It is not that italian clubs don’t have money or anything.Quaresma+mancini+muntari cost inter 50 million

  33. nishanth

Worried about the options we have from bench. Our main options are vela and eduardo. Both havn’t played for a long not even a sub appearance.Bendtner will be the only subs who has got some game time.Even ramsey hasn’t played for a long time

  34. Metal Gear

It’s funny how so called experts try 2 make Barcelona out 2 be a 1 man team. Mark Messi out the game so what? Xavi and Inesta are the one’s who really shouldn’t be afforded time they may not score the goals but neither did Paul Scholes and then there’s the small matter of Eto and the rejuvenated Henry.

  35. irishgunner

Yep Metal Gear spot on – its not a question of stopping Messi, its a question of stopping Messi, Eto’o, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta and Alves who loves bombing forward

  36. Stu

I hope toon stay up too if only to leave a spot for Hull in the relegation zone.
Boro and WBA are as good as down so its 1 of Toon and Hull.

  37. irishgunner

I gave Walcott an extra bit AND I mentioned his runs for the goals against Liverpool and Milan – that was my subliminal unbiased opinion Pedro ;)

I think they are all pretty much same level to be honest. I don’t think Young can get much better while I think Theo might.

  38. David

I like those stats u put up there about Walcott Irish…hopefully Pedro can give the guy a chance like he does pink boots…:D

  39. Lovedup Loner

Said it last night, but, what the fook?

How the beejayzuss did Giggs and A Young win players of the year???

This has definitely been a pretty uneventful, dull as shit season, with no players standing out, IMO….

Just hope to buggery it finiashed withn a flourish for that team in Red &White, you know who I is talkin aboot!

    Heevnin!

  40. irishgunner

    ha ha David

Well I agree with Pedro to a point, Walcott is far from the finished product but he can finish chances just needs to do it more often.

  41. David

    lol Irish…

I agree. He does look like a one trick pony but i have seen him with a few nifty footwork to get out of tight situations…i think he knows he doesnt have to dribble to beat his man he can just run past them but I really wish he would start playing smart instead of instintive….again…this is why Arshavin is on this team….I am hoping Wilshere can fill those shoes!

  42. Mandanda

I think this Guttierez lad is wasted at Newcastle. he could be a decent squad player in atop 4 side or regular in a UEFA cup team…an Argentinian international getting relegated hmmnnn never thought i’d see that!

  43. Lovedup Loner

Its voted for by players… in effin february for some daft reason…

It seems to me that Giggs got all the votes just when the media were full of stories about Giigs being such a good old pro, yadda yadda…. He’s done jack shit this season, yet no fucker else has stood out…

  44. Stu

Apparently the voting for player of the season is based on the celender year of 2008. Not the season 08-09. So effectively the players are saying that Gigs was the best player in 2008….which again is total bollocks.

  45. Lovedup Loner

I think Theo’s goal against Villareal showed the type of player he CAN be; an instinctive striker, with tons of pace and a deft finish on him to boot.

I think he’s done well on the wings, and will be a real threat for us v the mancs, especially on the counter…

Oh gawd, I can’t be doin with this waiting malarkey!!!

  46. Lovedup Loner

    Stu;

No its not mate. Its for THIS season, the world and European players is based on the calender year fella.

Thats what makes it soooo stoopid to be voting in February and not May…

  47. irishgunner

Lovedup – I’m going to get in a good few drinks tomorrow night and just watch the Barca Chelsea game to try and forget about our one for a few hours. Its being driving me bananas for the last few days worrying about what time AW will put out.

  48. Pedro

Pompey are being awful with their time wasting… did you see James catch that ball and hit the deck?

    What a cunt…

I hope Newcastle go down regardless.

  49. Stu

Well Lovedup if that is the case then its insane. There is no way to vote for player of the season based on 5 months of football. The important football comes in the last 2-3 months.

If AA had turned our season around and won us the FA cup and premiership he wouldnt even be a consideration for player of the season.

  50. Lovedup Loner

    Irish;

Yeah, will be a good distraction tomorrow; Beer and barca…

Right all you cool cats, Im splittin….. Seeya!

  51. Stu

The FA should make an exception for Hull and make it the bottom 4 that go down. 19 teams is enough for 1 league.

  52. nishanth

Shearer must be fucking useless.Even the crappiest of managers make some sort of an impact in the first few games

  53. irishgunner

That’s not any good to Newcastle they needed to win. They play Boro the game after next – the winner may just stay up at the expense of Hull

  54. Stu

Im delighted they are failing. They always do well against us, have delusional fans and their hero (shearer) is nothing but a cunt. Throwing elbows everywhere but was exempt because he is english and all….

Not to mention that its a long journey oop north for the team and travelling fans ;)

  55. nishanth

I hope andrei can stuff portsmouth next week.We really should smash in as many as possible. If at all chelsea slip up they might go through on goal difference.Yesterday was a great oppurtunity for that

  56. Stu

I cant wait to have Eduardo back and banging the goals in. Him and AA will be a lethal duo. ALng with the others obviously. Just keeping Ade away from the team will be a task all on its own.

  57. A

shearer really is useless, but he was always going to be. Someone who fucked up newcastle by being bigger than the club, undermining managers, and becoming undroppable regardless of form, and superior footballers like kluivert being at the club. Therefore as soon as he turned up he said that owen would start every game of the rest of the season, absolutely ludicrous! As soon as he said that their season was over!

I just hope that west brom survive, newcastle, bro, and hull would be a nice triplet to go down (though i don’t have much against middlesbrough to be fair)

  58. Stu

A, WBA staying up would be nice but its all but impossible considering their position.

Something to have against Boro: They usually take points off us. They have done for the last 4 or so years.

  59. A

yeah i know stu, but they also take points off the other big sides, so it evens them out to an extent!

never know with went brom, maybe their win at the weekend will give them some form, smash spuds at the weekend then wigan next week, and they’d be up and around there, just need to beat liverpool at home then smash blackburn away last game of the season, sorted!

  60. Pat

Nasri is built to play in the middle. He’s tough, hard to dispossess(much like Diaby, and is a good playmaker.

I’d like to see one of the following against United:

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure JD Gibbs
    Theo Cesc Song Nasri
    Diaby
    Ade

    or

    Almunia
    Sagna Toure JD Gibbs
    Theo Nasri Song Diaby??
    Cesc
    Ade

  61. A

    diaby in both teams pat?!

i reckon it’ll be something like

    ——–almunia——–

    sagna-toure-silvestre-gibbs

    ——nasri-song/denilson——

    theo—-cesc—-bendtner

    ——–adebayor——–

if silvestre doesn’t make it either jd will come in if he’s 100%, or song will drop back to centre back.

if nasri is kept out wide left, then diaby could come in alongside one of denilson or song

  62. ethangunner

Yes Jeremie Aliadiere , another one of wengers chosen ones , another who had way too many chances , another who was struck by injury , and most importantly another who failed in the youth project …

its more miss than hit when you think of names like Lupoli – Quincy – Stokes . not to mention the leagues of others who left also .. Mumbva & Bentley for the English sector .. but lets face it , its been going on since the upson days ..

sorry franchise but history cannot be denied .
wenger falls within his wage budget and sells these kids on at a profit …

there is no other way one can describe his actions ..

i would rather wenger focus money again on buys like Arshavin ..

  63. ethangunner

wenger frustrates the shit out of most of the youth’s in the team . what did he promise ramsey’s parents that day ? i bet you they are starting to wish they picked red nose also !

Because i didnt see their boy play too much this season . wenger would rather persist with denilson and song until they come good , which in turn lost us a ticket too the title race .

Sorry fran but this youth project inflicts as much damage as potential talent .

the sooner wenger concentrates on really top names like bojan or pato or any player who has world class youth potential

  64. ethangunner

    the better !

why not scalp youth who looks good for other top flight teams ? sure you pay more but you are guaranteed of quality , and also you can sell them on if they fail ..

wenger hardly makes a loss on any given player .
and everyone needs to realize that fact prior to
playing the MISTAKE CARD , because even someone like ade who has had a shocking year , wenger will still not lose money on him .

for instance buy bojan for 15 mil , then within 1 season the kid is worth 30 ..

or any potential world class youth buy for that matter .. and you dont need a killer scouting network .. google it FFS :)

  65. ethangunner

And if you like getting nobodies and trying to make them somebodies ,your a gambler .. and a gamblers mentality is pretty reckless …

i worked in a casino whilst studying my way thru Uni,. and i learned a thing or too about being a successful gambler ..

those are the ones who risk the most , who bet large amounts on a sure thing . as against some old granny who is playing the 10 pence slot machine and getting no where fast .

Yes wenger is the penny pinching granny !
instead of the Asian @ the baccarat table betting 25k a time !

  66. A

“wenger frustrates the shit out of most of the youth’s in the team . what did he promise ramsey’s parents that day ? i bet you they are starting to wish they picked red nose also !”

    what ethan?!

wenger plays more kids earlier than anyone else at ANY top team, which is why ramsey and others came to the emirates over other sides.

ramsey having played sparingly this season has featured in more big games and is closer to the first team at the age of 17/18 than he would have at any other club! Only freak cases like messi and cesc are regulars at that age, and ramsey will be awesome but isn’t messi standard!

bojan would be decent enough, but not worth 15 mil – he’s only started 3 games for barca this season, he’s been a perenial sub, and been very poor at times, missing more open goals than bendtner and suffering from a lack of confidence!

you can’t buy kids like pato etc, if they’re already at a big club. the only way they’d ever be available is if the club had realised they weren’t actually all that, like dos santos, in which case we wouldn’t want them anyways!

the only way to sign the top talent in the world is get them at the very start from the smaller clubs, when they’re raw, like theo, ramsey, vela, or on the odd occasion steal them before they’ve signed a contract like cesc and merida

  67. ethangunner

if you offer a club over the odd’s A , they will be interested ..
thats how wenger on a smaller scale gets his youth players to begin with ..

and im sure red nose would have played ramsey in the carling club and FA cup also …
no better / or worse than Arsenal , the only difference being ramsey might of got a medal next month instead of FA .

  68. A

ramsey’s had 3 champs league starts though ethan, and has been in the first team squad almost every match even if as an unused sub. At utd even if he still would’ve played in the league cup and possibly fa cup, the rest of the time he would have been thrown back into the reserves. Look at utd’s youngsters – gibson has played less than ramsey this season, and he’s three years older, 1 year ago gibson wasn’t getting any sort of a look in in the first team let alone 3!

no club will sell a player like pato, or messi, unless you offer things like 30 million, and we’d never offer over the odds for players because it’s illogical and makes no business sense! We’ve still gotta be self sufficient, offering over the odds for players would result in us ending up like leeds!

  69. gnarleygeorge9

Debate is healthy on the pro’s & con’s of the development of a winning team formula. But one thing that can’t be debated now is that The Arsenal is about to engage with a sworn enemy for only the 2nd time in its history. How great is that. & We can actually win, even better.

The debate over whether The Gaffers policy is right or wrong should be done during the review of both ties. Otherwise, enjoy the ride, coz I am. Anyone who is not snotty nosed and/or from Generation Y will tell you, these are the days to remember coz they will not last for ever. To those who are still feeling frustration this week about Club policy. You are the ones that are missing out. There is a CL trophey up for grabs & only 4 clubs in the world can win it. & one of those teams is The Arsenal.

  70. PDT

GG9, speak wisely you do! Time to enjoy, this is, not to carp.

Folly of my ways, this carper sees. Enjoy the ride, he will!

  71. gnarleygeorge9

    PDT

I’m going to have Thursday off. Why not? Its not every day the Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooners are in the Big Time :)

  72. gnarleygeorge9

Satisfaction for me will be seeing the Sweaty Sock complaining after the 2nd leg that manure were robbed & not bundled out of the comp by a better side.

Ofcourse he may admit that manure were beaten by a better side, which will be satisfying as well, but we all no that given the situation, Jock Ferguson is the biggest whinger there is. Its coming Red Nose :) Its Coming

  73. Jay

GG9 i will be watching the game then early to work! then…after work we are launching a new product so for me = free booze thursday when we get up!! haha!

  74. chozzer

My younger brother had a phone call yesterday saying that he’d won 2 tickets to the old cowshed tomorrow. How fukkin brilliant is that? I’m so excited, I might have to wear a nappy!

  75. Jay

Geoff – what do u really think will happen 2nite?
I don’t really know – but i just think Barca has their measure – the chav’s have used way too much ‘in gus we trust’ – Danger Drogba -
    Barca Danger – Messi – Eto – Henry – Xavi…

  76. abnet

pepole think Barca’s thiret comes for Messi but the main man for me is Iniesta he is the big diffrence you will see it tonight

  77. Geoff

Morning guys, I think Barca will put the chavs to the sword and I think we will beat the mancs, I think that because it’s the first time I’ve heard our team talking big, I have mixed feelings about fish head, I have a feeling he will play, the old club syndrome, but if Wenger believes in all this young team bollocks, he ought to trust Djourou.

    It’s karma.

One of our greatest player leaves without having won the one thing missing on his resume will face the club he left who will avenge the last time these 2 sides met and he’ll prob be on the losing side again.

You can’t make this stuff up.
