So this is it then, the quarter final of the Champions league, the sort of game that the spuds can only dream of.
This time last year we screwed up at the Grove by having all the possession, but no killer instinct, granted the ref helped Liverpool, but we have to expect that, we have to play our own game and go for an early goal, if we do that, they will panic, because we have an away goal and they will come out.
The best way of ensuring qualification is to win both games, it’s not like we are playing Barcelona or Bayern Munich, we are playing one of the two sides that everyone wanted, tonight we should get a win under our belts and make the return game less fraught.
It seems that we will be starting with Theo out on the right wing and Nasri on the left, that should leave Denilson in the middle with Cesc and my feeling is he will play with 5 in midfield, so that means Song or Diaby, if fit I expect Diaby as he offers a more physical presence, and he knows where the goal is.
The back four pick themselves so that means Sagna, Kolo, Gallas and Clichy with Almunia in goal and Ade alone up front.
So more or less the same team that beat Man City, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. We have to keep it tight at the back which means the midfield must keep possession, do that and let nature take it’s course.
If we keep the ball it stops them scoring, if they don’t score, they won’t win, if we keep possession we can score, we can surprise them by frustrating them, then one killer pass from Cesc and bang, it’s all over.
It reminds me of one General James Wolf and when king George sent him to Canada to kick the French out in 1759, they had an impressive fortress called Quebec, we parked our Navy in the Saint Lawrence river and as they had home advantage they just sat back waiting for us to make the mistake of attacking them.
Wolf took his cannons and his entire army and scaled the impossible heights of Abraham at night and when the French under General Montcalm woke up, the entire British army was behind them, two hours of silly French attacking saw Wolf win the match and Canada was back in the hands of King George, Wolf knew how important away goals were, so he got a bunch of them. He did what they didn’t expect.
For Montcalm read Robert Pires and for General Wolf it’s the dashing Cesc Fabregas, Wenger is King George and Canada the Champions league.
Unfortunately Wolf lost his life in that battle, but his last words were ‘thank God I have done my duty’ this was repeated 46 years later by Horatio Nelson, Nelson so loved the picture of Wolf’s final moments, he commissioned the same artist to paint his own demise, really, that’s all true, he even used Wolf’s famous words.
So the moral of this story is we need to surprise them, do what they don’t expect and attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, do that and the day is ours, and then we can start to think about playing Porto in the semis, so Cesc, go and do your duty and we’ll thank God.

Well Steve, I can probably make it to Midlands games in 1 ½ – 2 hours – less time than it takes me to get to the Grove, but I’d never have enough bottle to go to away games. Too scary, I mean the high-pitched whinging midlands accents more than any possibility of fisticuffs.
I wouldn’t mind Burnley coming up. I think that they are a very respectable club. After we beat them (finally) they didn’t come out and blame the ref or Cesc for spitting it was just a well played and good luck thing.

we need to be careful tonight. do not under estimate Villreal. they are trained to keep the ball and pass under pressure. the fact they have lost carzola may even make them more dangerous. whoever replaces him will be trying to prove that he should be in the team.

Pedro most of the players that were tops last year have suffered this year. Overall IMO Liverpool have been the best side in the league. They are hardly taken unaware by opposing teams. they seem to be the most cohesive side.
Our own problems were self made. we didnt have a good enough squad with deficiencies in key areas. Other teams like Mancs and Chelsea to an extent have just been scraping through. Liverpool on the other hand cant play without Gerrard and Torres.

Villareal would try to play the away goal game over two legs they might set up to hit us on the break but i doubt they have the forwards to achieve this. Rossi is a tricky forward but i dont expect either him or llorente to cause us any troubles

I don’t think that Clichy has been the player he was last year. He was tops last year and only made a few errors but this season he has made a lot more mistakes. I don’t know, it has been a strange season. At times we have looked like they have all grown up together and then at other times they have looked like they have no idea who their own team mate is.
I would love us to get a bit of silverware this season but kinda feel that if we didn’t then it’s not like we didn’t deserve it if ya know what i mean. if we win something we must be the only team in history to actually weaken our team over the close season and still win a trophy!

Steve is right… when you give the ball to Eboue… make an 80 yard run… and then he loses it… you’ve got to run all the way back and if a goal is scored, you are the one who is out of position.
Now the pair of them know that if Nasri has the ball, he is unlikely to lose it… the same with Arshavin… that allows them to attack more freely.
I am worried about sagna’s fitness.The guy hasnt got rest for god knows how long.With tough games coming one after another it might prove too much for him.I hope wenger rests him against wigan.Eboue can do a good job there.

I do feel for Clichy because it has taken them tiemm to gel this season for whatever reason and when you actually look at the way in which both of the full backs play they do both bmb forward. I think that’s probably why Wenger told them earlier on to hold back more and then after a few game sof finding the right team they were allowed to go again. Still though Clichy has also given the ball away himself more this season but that may be because he didn’t feel comfortable making the easy pass because of who it would have been to maybe??

While the large debt is being serviced and paid off with the extra revenue from the stadium we live on a smaller budget, hence the youth policy sprinkled with the odd big signing.
In a few years, once the debt is more or less paid off and our servicing costs are vastly reduced, we will be able to splash out big, summer in summer out.

Walcott is nursing his way back from a knee problem. He will have a fitness test today and he will start if it is at all possible, mainly because Arsenal need his pace.
Wenger obviously made the right decsion bringing in Arshavin but it’s something that should have been done in the summer really. Rosicky was always going to be very risky proposition.
Wenger himself said he could have gotten Arshavin in for cheaper in the summer so he’s actually spent more money than he should have by waiting to January.
That’s the worry with Wenger. He always seems to wait too long to a address a problem and because of that delay, we potentially lose players and possible silverware and it’s always a case of ‘next season’.

i agree wardo, with a different manager, or a different policy we wouldn’t still be competing in the top four and the other competitions. i am not one to be naieve, Sir Alex is a good manager, so is David Moyes and Rafa has the potential to be if he can turn CL performances into league performances which he is beginning to do although he needs a plan b and c because without Gerrard and Torres they are shit at best. Wenger obviously is a class manager also, any others imo would not be up to managing a top top team.

I don’t think Fabregas has the ability to play in the ‘hole’. He could find space against a rudderless Man City on Saturday but in the champions league he’ll be too slow, lack mobility, and not be able to get away from Villareal defenders/midfielders. I think he’ll be getting dispossessed all night long with his back to their goal. That’s not really his game playing with his back to goal.
I think we should drop him back where can find more space and then he can hit Ade and Bendtner in the channels. I think this will work cause Villareal will want to press us into our half and they will leave space in behind.
If we play 4-5-1 I don’t think we have the ability to play around the pressure they will put on us. Denilson’s passing falls apart when he plays in such situations, like it did against Roma. Villareal will nullify us easily if we try and play last year’s style of football imo.

i wouldn’t say that pedro – fergie has only ever signed players on a high.
i’d say they’re no different from the likes of cesc, theo, and ramsey, who were both incredibly highly rated, but wenger also saw something in failed (although previously highly rated) players, and brought that out in them, a la henry, vieira. As well as the nobodies like grimandi, song, denilson, senderos, djourou, bendtner, vela, clichy. Ade probably fits into both groups, not particularly highly rated but failed.
Fergie has never done that sort of thing, but that’s because he’s never had to do that sort of thing. Whether or not he could if necessary do it and still be as successful is open to debate.
fergie is an incredible manager at utd, and did very well at aberdeen, but i dunno if his skills would be as transferable in different situations as wenger, mourinho, hiddink etc, though we’ll never find out so it’s a pretty irrelevant debate!

Franchise I think Fabregas should be playing deeper, in a Xavi like position.
He lacks the pace, goal threat, and agility to consistently be called upon as an offensive threat.
Fabregas’s attacking abilitities are always best used in a subtle way, so he can ghost in. When the opposition know he is being deliberately placed in an offensive role, plans will be made for him and he will stopped with relative ease.
A – Ronaldo was a lot less known that Rooney. Fact. Tearing up the EPL is a lot harder than tearing up the Portuguese Liga Sagres! If Wenger was at United and had that money to spend then he would have and I presume you would be here telling us that Wenger is over rated.

paulinho i disagree about cesc – he plays in that position for spain when he’s selected, and the added freedom gives him a greater ability to attack. Whether it’s the position he’ll ultimately play for us when he’s 100% is open to debate, but he currently not being fully fit couldn’t play in a 4-4-2, and he has to play imo, so it has to be with two dms behind him. He doesn’t have to play in the hole, it just gives him freedom to find space and influence that play wherever he sees the opporunity, without the defensive responsibilities to hamper him.

paulinho xavi plays in a role in front of 2 dms at times…. at other times he plays in front of one dm, but certainly in a more advanced role than the normal 4-4-2….
taig of course rooney was more well known in england, throughout europe they were probably similarly known though, and both were very well known and very highly rated througout europe.
wenger has been an incredible manager for us, and is a fantastic manager, but the likes of mourinho are at the same level. ferguson is possibly just on that level but he’s never really been tested or had to do it in difficult circumstances..

exciting day..or to put it right times…ive read the dispute going on and dont mean to offend anyone…remeber i just love Arsenal..and that doesnt change a bit win or loose..in my simple mind i think we compete with both chelski and utd..so far this season we’re on top of them..

paulinho denilson keeps the ball better than anyone in the prem in front of our defence. Cesc plays there pretty much every time he plays for spain, and often does well there, it wasn’t a one off against russia. The italy game he was nullified but that can happen to anyone. If we don’t play 4-2-3-1 tonight then cesc isn’t fit enough to play. It isn’t a withdrawn striker role, it’s an attacking midfielder role, so he can get in the positions more frequently he gets his assists from sliding balls through for ade or theo.
that’s what we’ll be playing tonight anyways so we can debate how well it and cesc worked after the game!

A, Fabregas has the ability to play the ball forward when he gets pressurised in front of our defence. He can spot a runner and release them for a counter.
Denilson just puts our defenders under pressure when he gets pressed. He doesn’t have the vision to use their pressing against them and start a counter. He does what the opposition want him to do by passing to the nearest team mate, who is then pressurised even more by the oppostion.
So Denilson keeps the ball, but not every intelligently.

I know Theo is still learning the game and he does seem to be a one trick pony when not on his game (I mentioned this a few weeks back). Problem is, with Arshavin cup-tied and injuries to players, we don’t have many options. I would prefer we went 4-5-1

I don’t think either Arshavin or Nasri are a patch on Hleb in terms of dribbling.
Both of them so far can be made to pass sideways a bit too easily for my liking.
Nasri’s off the ball movment in terms of getting into position for a strike at goal has been the most impressive facet of his game.

I guess the Ferguson’s approach is a lot more direct than Wenger’s. If he had injury to a player the equivilent of Rosicky he would have signed someone else. Wenger knew Rosicky was a crock but did nothing.
But I wont complain with where we now find ourselves. Its acceptable if nothing else. The only thing we have missed out on for sure (but you never know) is the premiership. If you are not first then apart from automatic entry to the CL, there really is no difference between 2nd and 4th apart from a bit of pride. Just 1 trophy, in my opinion, would be a good year for us and if that 1 trophy was the Cl then it would be a very good year!

Ah, Tit Monday. It’s not that far off now…
That glorious day when, heading into work on the bus, or walking to the tube, or sitting on the train, you find yourself suddenly chirpier than you have been in months. After months of dull colours and chunky knit, the world’s birds suddenly dive into last summer’s wardrobe (they’ve not had chance to buy this season’s stuff) and chuck it on without a thought. Slightly stunned by the morning heat, they drag out the summer clothes but forget to bring a cardie (a mistake they will not make again until next year), so that when they’re all standing outside All Bar One after work celebrating the arrival of spring, their barely covered nipples have no protection from the cold. It’s like a Bring-and-Buy sale where everyone has brought hat pegs. It’s like a prog-rock gig where, instead of lighters, everyone is holding up nipples.
So when will Tit Monday fall this year? Will you be the first to text your mates with the announcement? Do not shoot your bolt too early. There will be false starts. You will smell fresh cut grass and see a couple of early starters and feel compelled to declare Tit Monday. But your more level-headed friends will tell you to hold your horses, keep your powder dry, don’t fire until you see the whites of their bra straps.

Cardiff has come along way from the days of Shirley(3 in a bed) Bassey and Tiger Bay.My daughter is at uni there and it is a thriving city,but the football supporters are animals.
Cardiff is a fantastic place, some of the women you see out and about in the nicer parts, are phenomenal.
Kelsey, I stayed down there for all cup finals, semi-finals, community shields and never had a problem. Great place. Glad it has moved back to Wembley now though as i’m sure the missus thought I had a mistress.

Cesc, Ade, Denilson, Song and Nasri were all very poor in the first half. Ade was too isolated in the first half. Villareal were too dominant in the midfield meaniing theo, nasri and cesc had to sit back defending for most of it and ade was as isolated as gordon brown.
What about bloody kolo, cant head the ball ala crucial games at the end of last season and his 1v1 defending is appauling. I wished it kolo that injured not Gallas. Sagna needs to change is footwear as well.
Tony, Djourou always looks assured when he first comes in, then it’s a gradual decline over the following games.

Clichy really pales in comparison to Sagna.
Sagna is no world beater but it appears he is superior to Clichy both defensively and offensively.
It takes Clichy far too long to warm up and start going forward. Nasri relies on him doing that and he’s rendered impotent until Clichy does.

Djourou was solid today IMO. I just couldnt understand how we were being outplayed in our crowded midfield with two holding midfielders. Song’s lack of pace was exposed today. the pair of denilsong improved in the 2nd half as did the others

Like I said at half time AW should have moved Nasri to play behind Ade after thos eto enforced changes, with Cesc playing midfield with Song. Denilson should have tucked in at left mid. Cesc’ presence in midfield would have improved our ball retention and distribution in central mid. AW got that wrong in my view

Both Denilson and Song seem a gear short of what is required. They come on strong when the other team drops physically but at the end they were getting out hustled again.
Walcott was very lively and the substitution of him for Eboue was a terrible one from Arsene.

Mandanda the 3 in the middle at times was crowded cos Cesc kept going into the midfield to get the ball out as Sond and denilson’s distribution wasnt always successful. cesc was also very guilty of loosing ossession cheaply but u dont take ur big moment players off especially in a game of that magnitude. those that cant stand Ade u better get very used to him because Wenger trusts and believes in him. Nasri is still someway off from being as effective as hleb or rosicky were. even arshavin seems to be more effective than him after a few months. he’s still young still
we were dominated in midfield because Senna and Aguire were better in retaining and distributing the ball, they were better technically. However both our central midfielder got stronger late on in the match being obviously younger…Senna-Aguire simply could not keep that pace up for 90mins
Dont think Clichy had an injury. He may have missed one game maybe two but no more than that because of injury. Usually plays unless Gibbs plays in the CC.

Mandanada when we were defending the midfield trio were too close together and it didnt stop villareal picking holes in them. Everytime we won the ball we couldnt counter properly cos the players were too close together. it meant at times that the defensive mids had to go ahead of cesc and several times song tried to force passes that were not on. Ade was very isolated for most of the game.

Thought we were really poor in the first half. I dont like this formation, I think we got away with it against Man City as they lose their bottle at the first sign of losing a game, but the same massive gaps were there today and this time we did not get the early goal.
But like Saturday, we grew stronger in the 2nd half. And what a goal. I dont like Ade the individual but that goal was World Class. I know he is a marmite player but surely even his biggest critics must be applauding that. On the other hand, just as well as he struggled to get into the game.
Now I have praised Song and Denilson for their improvement in recent weeks, but tonight was a step back. I thought both were accidents waiting to happen and both gave the ball away too cheaply.
I am struggling to pick out a player of ours as a MOTM but maybe Theo or Nasri for their Effort, or maybe Toure who I thought played really well.
We are in the driving seat though, and we should get into the semi-final. Great result, poor first half, better 2nd half.

Nasri holds on to the ball too much somtimes Mandanda if we had sm1 capable to play on the left he could have done the job though. the problem was if u moved denilson to the left its almost guaranteed that he wouldnt give us width. Armand traore might well have an Arsenal future. Left footed, pacey, good crosser and fierce shot. Cesc was suffering more from fitness than anything else IMO.
Franchise, it’s only predictable when we’re playing badly… I think our game requires high levels of confidence from everyone to work…

Overall, Song and Dennilson did well. I expected Dennilson to close Senna b4 that shot, but shit happens. The experiment with Cesc in the hole should be stopped because it did not help our midfield. Cesc need to play deeper to be effective for us in these type of matches.

He should not be in the box when the ball has no chance of reaching him, I know he rushes to the box to meet a cross etc. Those times you mentioned, there were too many yellows to intercept, so dumb to pick out your center foward anyway. I am not saying he is perfect but some of us expect strikers to be 100% all the time. Very few strikers can be a Pele or Maradona

It could be our Season after all after getting away with that shocking first half hour, maybe our luck is changing seeing Coco getting injured and a young faster more confident Fabianski get a run going could be a blessing.
Our defence looked a shambles with Coco in goal as they haven’t got a clue what he will do next. The TV pundit pricks blamed Gallas for the injury to Coco but Gallas as in the past never had any idea what his keeper was going to do.
Great shot from Senna but as he probably knew just hit the target and you will have a 2-1 chance of scoring against him and thats when his ankle is ok. Senna went for power with Fab in goal as just hitting the target isn’t enough to beat any half decent keeper.
Before the match started ITV 450 decided to show the goal Coco let in that lost us the Final in Paris and it looks worse every time I see it.
The Gallas injury is a problem as he is our best defender and him and Kolo were starting to look good as a partnership. I love Kolo the footballer and the person but as I have always said he isn’t a CB he makes far to many recovery tackles and can’t head the ball properly, awesome going forward though, he reminds me more of Essien.
Clichy is the most over rated player at our Club and should be in the Hate list alonside Eboue and Song, just what does this guy offer us? Defensively he is average and gets by because he is very quick.
In attack he is appaling. Clichy cant cross doesn’t shoot and is worse than a crab player as he is a pass back to the CB player that the likes of the Chavs encourage. Notice how all our opponents try exploiting him. He is a good guy but then so would I be if I was picked every week no matter what.
Song was probably one of the better players tonight after the 30 minute onslaught that was always going to fade away he actually took control of the middle alone.
Dennilson was quiet and Cesc very rusty, Theo had one of his better games without actually producing anything, his pace kept them on the back foot until our Master tactician wenger decided to give them a chance in the last 10 by taking Theo off (when will he learn).
Ade was a total disgrace even though he got that marvellous goal. A decent striker against them might have got more than a wonder goal and also brought Team mates into play.
The crossing was actually excellent tonight but Ade didn’t once try to get in front of the defender as Arshavin did for the deflected goal the other week so the crosses looked poor RVP also has this problem too.
Nasri looked uncomfortable up the left but switched on when moving inside so why couldn’t our Master tactician sort that out during gameplay instead of waiting till half time?
Kolo and Sagna did ok but there were still shitty pants moments from either of them when we were being attacked.
We have the tools to be a great Team but the way Wenger chooses his favourites no matter what will be the undoing of it all. I don’t want to see anyone get injured but in my opinion this could be the best thing thats happened to us in the past 2 seasons seeing our Team with a keeper in the sticks.
Not a good time to moan as the result was a good one but we are better than this and it is being said every week. we can win ugly or lucky at least, just would be nice to win with ease as the great Teams did and help save my ticker.

Chipo – in my mind ade improved massively after 18 months of regualr 1st team footy… bendy will do the same from next season.
i am with you on bendy offering much, much more to the overall team style of play and i believe he actually understands the offside rule better aswell… which always helps.
bendy can improve his clinicalness, he scores plenty for denmark… he just needs to get a good run and bang in some of those misses and his confidence and calmness in front of goal will soar, as did ades last season… and then we will have the striker we deserve.
Cesc Fabrigas was immense tonight, playing in his second game in a few days after being seriously injured for months didn’t come into consideration for most who knocked his performance and said he couldn’t play behind the Striker.
Cesc can play anywhere and if the Striker he supported actually tried to partner him things would have looked far better. Well done Cesc you are a legend. That free kick goal should have stood too and why book him then let their wall broke before the kick was taken on the retake without punishment?

I dont think Cesc was in a good position to play in the hole…I mean he had to deal with Marcus Senna the whole game…not very good matchup physically…I think next time we should put pink boots in there to play behind Adebayor…or Van persie can do a good link up job as well.

There are a few things that could be improved upon to the 1st XI that takes the field, but injury, re injury & missed opportunity to bring in a specific player type limit that option. But the boys that are @ the coal face now on match day/night (shit do I sound like I’m up from up north of England
) are giving it their best, so I’m going to give them my utmost support. i.e Song was crap 1st half, but 2nd half he was virtually transformed from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde, he was great. Ade cops it from certain sections ofthe fan base for poor attitude, etc, but what can he do when isolated up front like he was in the 1st half. His last 3 goals have given The Club a real chance of staying in CL next season, & winning the CL this season. Sure there might be a better option, but why get all worked up about it. Enjoy the next 3 months

If you want to critise the performance,we weren’t allowed to settle from the off,a quick tempo on a slippery pitch and i think everyone would agree that we were lucky not to be 2-0 down at half time.
there may be more,but Senna,Bentley and giovanni have now all scored from a similar position this season,because they weren’t marked .I disagree about Nasri,I thought he was pants,and not for the first time didn’t perform in an away game.I also disagree about Clichy,he again got caught out of position near the end,which could have led to a goal.Toure was my man of the match,and considering he has only played once before in 4 months cesc was OK but may have been sent off with another referee.I am sure everyone will talk about Adebayor today,was it brillant or a fluke.Love him or hate him,we are now in the driving seat for the second leg,but with Gallas out will Djorou or Silvestre rise to the occasion,with games coming thick and fast.I expect Bedntner,arshavin and gibbs may feature against Wigan,the momentum is there but the rest of the season could well be decided on who is fit.

We should never have taken Theo off, it’s like he has to play Eboue, I really don’t understand it, the minute Theo went off, the spark went.
Having said that I would like to see Theo shoot more and Ade to learn the offside rule.
