Arsenal to win 3-1 tonight for me, I don’t care who we get in the next round, just as long as we get into the next round.

Keyser when you go through via penalties any time, you’ve lucked it. It’s just random basically. The slightest move from a keeper can determine the winner and we saw that several times in those penalties, a few of ours were less than convincing.
So it’s just relief not delight, the team wasn’t set up well, there was a big hole behind the strikers most of the time where Cesc would normally play, generally poor for 120 minutes. But we march on. I certainly wouldn’t call that last two hours ‘awesome’!

I will agree though, some of the penalty takers really impressed me, especially Bac, he was utterly calm and focussed as he stepped up, he knew exactly what he was doing and did it. Well done lad. most talented players let us down today, dunno what’s wrong with vp, attrocious, and nasri just seemed to be half asleep, took too long to do absolutely everything, movement and passing, decision making poor.
bendtner was our best player though only played 80 mins.
theo was quick but very unfit after came on, though did some good things. eduardo completely unfit gave the ball away every time he got it
denilson and diaby were crowded out and lack of movement ahead of them made life difficult for them, diaby’s physicality meant he was able to battle a bit more but his decision making is still shocking.
eboue was barely involved and when he was he did did one or two direct runs but basically did nothing all match
shocking defending from kolo and gallas for the goal but did ok after that,
sagna and clichy absolutely shocking going forward and got skinned a fair bit today, especially vucinic making a clown of sagna, and clichy giving away what should have been a penalty.
almunia should have saved the goal imo but after that did ok

Sorry to be negative again, but I really think Clichy is having his worst season ever. He seems to lose possession a lot, gets caught out of position regularly, is always a liability in our own area, and the amount of time he takes to take a throw in! jesus!

pires – bendtner was the only person who did anything going forward at all, he was the only option for the midfield going forward, and only player who actually made anything happen, skinned players which made space, everything going forward was because of him, though there wasn’t that much! he was the only player who could keep hold of the ball too!

Agree. Diaby was our best player. However, I should stress that Dennilson played below expectation. He gets into trouble when he is rushed by two or more players. I think Song will have played better.
AW gets my le chump award for not reacting to the game from the bench. Eboue should have gone at half time and VP should have gone somewhat later. Bent did a job, although its clear AW does not trust him enough.
Seb, this is basically only his 3rd season. Last season was over performing imo. Like so many others too.

I actually thought Nasri was our best player, but it was not a difficult choice as collectively we lacked cohesion and leadership. It was a bit of a flashback to the bad times of a month ago and I hope it was a blip in our return to form.
As for the next round I would take Porto or Villareal, I hope we dont get Bayern (our CL bogey team) or Liverpool who will will spawn it against us again.

i disagree pires, nasri was very poor second half, took so so long to pick a pass, missed lots of opportunities to give good balls early, and his passing was not accurate enough.
to be fair bendtner is the only player i thought that actually came out of the game with any credit, just because he was the only player who tried to take the game to roma, with varying levels of success

Agreed eboue was the wrong person to take off, we lost our stability.
Also in extra time i was completely bemused by the decision not to bring Song (bear with me here!) on for Denilson or Diaby to plug the gaps Roma were exploiting. This would’ve allowed more bodies to commit forward, and Song is fit enough to cover a lot of ground.
I know Theo hasn’t played at all, and he’s not ready, but if he isn’t ready don’t bring him on in a game like that when we have a raring to go and 100% fit Vela on the bench as well.
Chuffed to make it through though, thought (a lot of thous there!) we scraped in by the seat of our pants. Maybe it will teach us a lesson going into the next round.
One thing it will surely do is give a massive boost to the whole team.

An Arsenal fan suffered a suspected stab wound in a clash with hooligans before the Gunners’ Champions League match against Roma on Wednesday.
The British Embassy in Rome said the victim was travelling on a minibus when it lost its way near the Olympic Stadium and was ambushed by rival fans.
An embassy spokesman said the injured man managed to make his way into the stadium where he was treated for a bleeding leg.
The embassy spokesman said: ”This bus got a bit lost around the stadium and some Roma fans tried to get on the bus. One managed to get on to the bus and there was a fight.
”The driver managed to get away when the Roma fan was pushed out of the bus.”
The victim was able to watch the match after receiving medical care, the spokesman said.
He added: ”We don’t know if it was a stabbing or glass from a smashed window.”
An Arsenal spokeswoman said: ”A male Arsenal fan was believed to be stabbed outside the stadium. Roma fans threw stones at a bus, smashing windows, and an individual allegedly entered the bus and stabbed a fan.”

I wouldn’t like to be the person who writes the post match report.Hard to put it into words,but I feel numb rather than elated,having gone through.We literally got out of jail,when not for the first time the game should have been wrapped up in the first leg.
I feel it is not necessary to run through every players performance,because everyone underachieved,and at times we looked a shambles against a fairly ordinary Roma side.
This season we just can’t put 2 decent performances together back to back.The question is Why?.Beating Cardiff,Burnley and WBA means absolutely nothing,in the contense of this game.Every team will want to draw us,and that might just work in our favour.I feel i have to be brutally honest,yet how far we progress from this,is anybody’s guess.

IMO football people remember how many times a club has won the CL, not how they won it. CL is just a notch on your belt so to speak. The most boring clubs ever seem to win it multiple times. Only Barca, in living memory, won as a nice looking side, but that was against a 9 man Arsenal.

If that Argie had of converted his penalty for Villareal, it was exactly the same. Down to OT and/or penalties.
Wenger is a curious geezer I agree, but lets give the boys a pat on the back. Its played over 2 legs & we came out winners. As evo says game over
over 2 legs (despite todays lesser performance) we were clearly the best team. The first leg was a dominant display and despite not converting that into 3-0 or 4-0 to start with, Roma are clearly not a quarter final team.
Another conclusion from this mornings game was that Wenger was correct in sending Baptista back, he truly is shite!
