Dull, flat and lifeless… And then they woke up and it was a joy to watch.

by & filed under Uncategorized.

That first half was hardly a dream was it? However, the second half brought goals, sharp football and gave the big boys a chance to bed back in!

As I left the house, fresh from the binge drinking session I’d enjoyed the night before… I thought… you know what, this is going to be a marvelous day. The sun was shining, my hangover was waning and I was 10 minutes early to meet Geoff for once.

It didn’t quite turn out that way… Geoff cracked a tooth on the way up and performed DIY dentistry on himself with super glue… t-shirt weather turned into waterproof mac and two pair of socks weather… and it rained on us for the first time in 3 years.

Anyway… I’m not here to write a review about the weather and the bad luck… I’m here to write about what I witnessed for the ninety minutes… with a broken hand… yes… I broke my hand this weekend and I’m still putting my body on the line for the site… so for once, it’s going to be short and sweet.

The game was a non starter for me… It felt like a replay… like going through the motions… like I’d already been here before. Arsenal took a casual aproach to the game and showed this seasons trade mark lack of urgency in their approach. Our line up was an interesting one… Song and Eboue back in the mix as always.

What was amusing is my seating buddy Paul told me the line up… I questioned two of my least favourite inclusions… he told me to calm down… I agreed and said,

‘Actually, the odds are stacked pretty heavily in favour of Song and Eboue having a good game. It has to happen once in my life time!’

… and sure enough, my edumacated bluff worked out. Song had a blinder… and Eboue complimented him by having and equally ok game.

In fact, after the first half passed, Arsenal actually looked dangerously impressive. I would go as far as saying; metaphorically, I was experiencing a football hard-on. Yes, I was mentally aroused at the prospect of what our team could offer when all our players return to fitness. I was ‘chubbofied’ (sic) at the prospect of Arsene Wenger having a selection headache! I was confident that Arsenal could actually mount a trophy challenge and take 4th place… because I was EXCITED by our play!

Arsenal knocked the ball about in the second half with pace, power and finesse. Arshavin picked his way through an organised block of 8 defenders. Theo looked just as fast as he did before his injury… Carlos Vela had already show the crowd that he could be our star man up front… Eduardo finished outrageously to prove to the world that his injury blew our title challenge last year… and Kieran Gibbs proved that we have yet another superb left back coming through on the conveyor belt of solid full backs.

My hand wont last much longer… I’m like Rosicky after 14 games… you know it’s only a matter of time… but before I go… let me run you through the goals.

The first goal came from a beautiful pass sent in by Arshavin. He laid Vela off a perfectly weighted pass… the young Mexican raced past two men and chipped the beast for a masterful first in the FA Cup.

The second goal came early in the second half. Song gained control outside the box, he looked up, chipped a perfectly weighted ball into Eduardo, who outrageously volleyed with the outside of his left boot into the top corner.

Let me repeat… this goal was outrageous. Superb… amazing. Check it out if you haven’t already.

The third came when Eboue laid the ball to Song… who cleverly back healed the ball into the path of Eboue… who buried it hard and low.

Things to note:

  • > The whole team celebrated with Eboue. They all love him…
  • > Song picked up 2 assists.

Now , while I don’t see this as a turning point in either player’s careers… I have to give credit where credit is due… they done the business toady, and it was great to watch.

So, next up in the Cup is Hull, then we have the pleasure of the Chav’s.

Grovers… I’m excited again. How about you?

P.S. It was great to meet more normal people from the site. Mary, thanks for swinging by the S+B, it was great meeting a girl with an Irish accent so thick set… I needed a translator! It was also to great to meet someone I’d disagreed with on many occasions… only to find out the bastard was a 6ft 6in spitting image of our very own JD! Thanks to the rest of the gang as well… if Peroni drinking were a sport, we’d all be Gold medalists!

Enjoy the day in the sun Grovers, next up Roma and with their injury list, we could actually win this one.

interesting that u both have put rosicky in the team. i think people forget just what a class act he is.

  2. A

yeah tom, nasri especially, but both he and theo are still a fair way away from their potential, and can be inconsistent, so i’d expect to see arshavin and rosicky ahead of them when everyone’s fit.

back five picks itself, as does cesc, and then there’s another centre mid spot and the only three realistic options are denilson, song, or possibly diaby though that’s a big risk.

next season i reckon we could see that front 6 starting, but probably with a new centre mid alongside cesc, hopefully yaya!

i think ade will be off, could depend on how the rest of the season goes, but out of everyone i’d bet on him being the first to leave, especially when the realisation that he’s not gonna be a regular sinks in

  3. kingsley

i would play that team at home but mix it up a little away. i think we get a bit more room to play counter atack so i would go for a 4-3-3

    the normal back 4

    rosicky denilson fabregas midfield three

    arshavin and walcott

    adebayor

i think ade’s pace, height and power are still usefull away from home.

  4. choy

nah.. don’t want yaya… they will be gone for the ACN and may not come back in shape..

    pedro… get well soon mate!

  5. Trinidad_G

Ade doesn’t need to be off, let’s not be concerned with the wage bill for a second. Having alot of options isn’t a bad thing and its up to Wenger to keep them happy and up to the board to pay them. After two seasons of being blighted by injury i can’t say I want to see the back of a striker that was rated at 30 mil. We don’t need less players and hope everyone stays fit. How do we know RVP will be fit for all of next season? If we sell Ade and RVP gets crocked again, who do we have? Eduardo and Bendtner to depend on all season long in four competitions?

  6. A

next season, we’ll have vp and eduardo as first choice forwards, i’d put bendtner ahead of ade in the pecking order, and theo and vela pushing him hard, as well as the fact that arshavin can play as a second striker.

ade would be great to keep in the squad as a plan B, as someone to bring on away from home, or if things aren’t going well, but he can’t be first choice anymore if we want to play free flowing attacking football again, which obviously we do. It just comes down to how willing ade is to play a bit part/sub/squad player role, now he’s had the taste of being the main man. I’d imagine he wouldn’t accept it, which is why i expect him to be off in the summer

  7. choy

    trinidad

we have vela, walcott, rvp , eduardo, nick

and we have plenty of players who can play in the no.10 role

    nasri, arshavin, diaby

  8. Trinidad_G

Vela, Theo and Bendtner will be great for us in a few years, but for right now I rather Vela and especially Theo on the wings. Bendtner’s finishing will be better than Ade’s in a little, but it isn’t right now. I dont like us depending on 20year old Vela and 19 year old Theo to lead the line. Big physical Ade is a good option sometimes. Vela will get his opportunities.

  9. Trinidad_G

We need players to develop .. Wilshere shouldn’t be near the first team for a while, he’s only 16. If a 16 year old is better than what we have, replace what we have and let the 16 year old develop properly

  10. Trinidad_G

    My first 11 :

    ……………..Almunia……………..
    Sagna…….Toure……..Gallas…Clichy.
    …………..Cesc….Denilson………..
    ….Van Persie….Arshavin……Rosicky..
    ………………Eduardo…………….

Ade as plan B target man. Theo, Nasri on bench

  11. Pedro

A, you’ve hit the nail on the head.

That is how our system works… that is why we attract the best youth… we pay the most.

    As confirmed by Rafa.

  12. kingsley

pedro, do you think we will sell any of our attacking players in the summer? add to that the young players coming through is it a dead cert that some will go in your opinion?

  13. A

yeah i understand us paying the top young players top dollar pedro – but paying youth players who come through the ranks, and obviously don’t have the talent to play at the top level more than the average premiership wage is absolutely ridiculous

  14. A

little jack seems to be on it today, fantastic skills

JET seems to be playing a left back free role, interesting!

  15. Pedro

Wenger always talks about giving them the best possible start and all that guff…

Considering he usually gets a bulk of his money back… I guess he sees it as worth it.

Kingsley, I’d imagine Ade will be on his way out in the summer. However, at the same time… he is exactly what many teams want. A fast, powerful beast up front to hold the ball up. I don’t think he is that bad… but on £80k a week… he could be expendable… especially if nick goes.

I wouldn’t sell anyone to be honest… let the kids coming through face competition like at ManU. Make them struggle so they appreciate their place when they get it.

  16. Pires02

Nice problem guys as you point out. I actually think Wenger should buy David Silva as well to make sure we have the best quality midgets! Seriously though, we need 3 of that ilk playing every week regardless of injuries and too many comps. Rosicky is a must, Cesc is a must and I think Nasri and Silva make up the three from 4 with Arshavin/Walcott/Vela as backup (for midfield). Upfront that leaves the regular starters of RvP, Arshavin, Walcott, Vela and Eduardo. Ade should have been allowed to go with the supposed money on offer, and though Bendtner is a quality impact sub, he could help fund other areas.

  17. A

yeah i understand some of them pedro – but players like steer, ogogo etc will never even be championship players, and we won’t get any money when selling them, so to spend 800k a year a piece on their wages is completely bemusing

  18. kingsley

i just think that we need a player like ade to mix it up when teams sit really deep. without his a threat in the air i can see us being guilty of over playing like we used to at times a few years ago.

i guess a lot will depend on rvp signing a new contract. if he hasnt signed by the summer surely we cant let him enter the last year of it. same goes for walcott. Until they actually sign its a worry.

  19. Pedro

Maybe we don’t pay them all that…? It wouldn’t surprise me though… especially if there has been some sort of percieved loyalty by not fucking off to another club on their 17th.

I know the guy I went who signed up got a £50k bonus for doing so… and Pennant was driving a TT when he was 17…

Kerrea Gilbert still hasn’t left has he? Aliadiere hung on for as long as he could!

  20. Pedro

Kingsley, I genuinely believe RvP loves Arsenal. He’ll sign… no doubt.

Ade might be surplus if Nik can carry on improving.

  21. A

yeah pennant’s a different case though, he would’ve made a good 100k from his share of the transfer fee when still a kid!

really had high hopes for aliadiare, thought he could’ve been awesome if the injuries hadn’t destroyed him

frimpong’s passing at times is quite funny, he’s so solid though

  22. tomstoned

    Evening Gooners..

fine article Pedro…there are in my eyes two players who should find somewhere else to play during summer….djourou and senderos….buy one defender..Hangeland…

other than that no new players please…we got what we need…and i hope we as true fans will stand firm behind the rest of Our Beloved Arsenal..:)

but heey im just an old ice bear…from far up north..

im slightly worried about tomorrows clash with roma tomorrow ..but im convinced that if we get pass that hurdle …we’re on the loose..and will not look back..

one point remains…Our Beloved Arsenal has future..what does l’pool..or chelski have even worse milan…or other european teams…in a couple of years Arsenal will be the new Brazil…no doubt…:)and we are amongst the best both players wise and money wise…this is more important that we maybe think…depending on what measures fifa will take against clubs with big debts….what on earth shall manu..do..if there will be restrictions.,..that club is in deep shit…like barcelona or madrid…or what about chelski..lol…

no Folks the future is right here….:)

    have a great evening all…

    Best Regards tom,.

  23. paul

Anyone know if there is any truth in the story that Arsenal are asking season tickets holders to renew in April.Maybe before we know about Champions League qualification.

  24. Stu

    Tomstoned,

Of all players that could be gotten rid of why did you single out JD and Senderos? As a “true fan” surely you should support all the players. Especially the ones who try very hard.

And why those 2 defenders. Both young with their best years ahead of them. Why not Silvestre, who never plays and is shit. Or even any of the other players that the majority of fans dislike.

    Best regards Stu.

  25. A

JET doesn’t have a position really paul, left back isn’t playing him out of position, it’s just somewhere he can play.

He’s youth top scorer too, not reserve team top scorer, and left back because gibbs is with the full squad, he’s the best other player we’ve got, and otherwise he wouldn’t be in the team, imo he’s done ok tonight

frimpong is so frustrating, had more shots than lampard does tonight, and his technique is so attrocious. It’s just like if song tried to shoot every time he got the ball, absolutely ridiculous. He’s really good in the tackle though and really solid.

  26. Stu

    Its the Arsenal moto.

I believe that Wenger still thinks players are the same as years and years ago in that they can all play numerous positions. But in reality thats not the case. Positions are becoming more and more and complex and it takes a lot to understand certain positions. It akes a special player to be able to comfortably change positions. Players that we dont really have.

    Paul, whats the team??

  27. A

    stu – starting team was

    ————shea————

    eastmond-bartley-ayling-JET

    randall-coquelin-frimpong-wilshere

    ————bischoff————

    ————sunu————

rhys murphy came on for eastmond after an hour, he went up top, coquelin right back, randall centre mid, bischoff right mid

  28. A

also disagree completely about the positions thing stu – positions and formations are becoming more and more fluid, much less defined, players like ronaldinho, messi, cristiano ronaldo, hleb, arshavin, nasri don’t have as set positions, can play all over the place swap with others, have free roles to roam etc.

  29. Stu

A, i see your point but all those players are just versatile attackers and given a lot of freedom to do their thing.

Attack doesnt really have a set formation anymore. Its only really defence and such positions. Thats what i meant.

    Positions with defensive responsibilities etc….

  30. A

    pretty pants reserve game

wilshere was a class above on the ball, skinning them for fun just taking the piss half the time

frimpong was fantastic in the tackle, but his use of the ball when he had it was very very poor

coquelin was crowded out alot centrally though did some good stuff

randall was ok but is a bellend

bischoff had a really poor game

sunu didn’t have much luck or support but has very good feet held the ball up well and showed a few skills

    bartley and ayling were ok

    eastmond is pants

JET showed very good feet and a lovely left foot, brushes everyone around him out the way when playing with kids, his size is incredible

shea was pretty average but very young

  31. Big Raddy

    Stu,

Completely disagree about the positions of the players. Our midfielders and attackers are constantly changing position.

But, what really interests me in your comment is the assumption that you know more about our players than AW.

  32. A

it depends stu – JET and coquelin are very versatile, just as essien does. I know what you mean, but with full backs i think there’s room for fluidity, the amount that players like daniel alves and maicon bring to barca and inter in terms of having an extra attacker is invaluable, I want coquelin to do that, as he has for the reserves, playing right back but when going forward drifting inside and being like an extra attacker, though it does rely upon having a solid DM to cover, which we currently dont.

  33. Paulinho

    Amaury Bischoff absolutely awful again.

What has he got apart from a decent touch and pass?

Poor performance by everyone apart from Wilshere.

  34. Stu

So.. do ye think Bischoff wdeserves a contract at the end of the season??

I think he will get one because he got fit but i wouldnt know if he deserves one. Anyone?

  35. Big Raddy

Should JET continue his development, he is going to be just awesome. He is just like Micah Richards

He already has Vieira’s size, and has great natural skill. Others have said that he lacks discipline, but that will come. I have great hopes for this kid. Even more than JW, because we have an abundance of fine midfielders, but no big presence. JET could be that man.

  36. A

i dunno stu, last reserve game he played he was exceptional, made me think he was finally fit and could break into the first team, but that was mid jan and he seems to have gone backwards rather than forwards since then, so i really dunno. He was very poor today, seemed disinterested

  37. Big Raddy

    A. I agree. Our full backs need to develop better end product when they attack. Sagna manages one decent cross out of ten, and Clichy less.

  38. A

yeah raddy, imagine if he had micah’s speed with his size!! he’s already an absolute monster, if he was quick too he’d be unstoppable. My only worry is where he’ll end up playing though, he’s got the natural skill and size to be an incredible centre mid, but if he’s so far behind even the other under 18s in terms of his discipline and tactical awareness, then i really dunno how he’ll make it as a centre mid. Maybe a good wide man drifting in, or behind the forward, but i dunno if he has the nippiness for that? maybe a full back but lacks pace?! troublesome, gonna be a tough time working out where he could fit in

  39. Pedro

I wonder if the full backs do extra training?

If you spent a week practising crosses… there would be a marked improvement for the next game. I wonder if they do practice?

  40. A

i really dont think so pedro, with clichy and sagna their problems are deeply inbedded in their technique, for them to improve their crossing markedly they’d need to learn how to kick a ball from scratch again!

it took giggs about 5 years to learn how to cross ok, a week’s practice with players like clichy and sagna would do nothing unfortunately

  41. Stu

Think they lost 1-0 Choy. Didnt see the match.

I kind of hope that Bischoff doesnt get a contract because imo we have other, younger reserves that should get a chance in the first team. Bischoff at 21 is at the age that he should be already in a first team somewhere. Instead of in the reserves. And especially at Arsenal where most 21 year olds are either starting or have been sold to another club.

  42. Big Raddy

    A

If he has pace over say 5 yds , then that is enough for a DM in the Vieira vein. He is a captain which would indicate he has some intelligence, and leadership qualities.

  43. A

yeah raddy, he’s quick enough to be a DM, it’s just his lack of positional sense and tactical awareness that makes me wonder about his being a centre mid.

There’s a big step up in terms of positional intelligence etc from youth to reserves, and then even more from reserves to first team. currently JET isn’t even considered to have enough tactical and positional ability to play centre mid for the under 18s, let alone the reserves, and not even talking about the first team!

If he can develop that then he could be one hell of a player, however even players who do have it at youth level sometimes can’t step up, for someone who doesn’t have it at that level is a very big ask

  44. choy

A.. do they have fixed positions though in the reserves and the youth teams?

I think they are made to play every position no?

  45. A

they do move around a bit more than at senior level choy, as players are still developing etc, but they do have set or best positions, apart from JET of course who plays everywhere bar keeper!

  46. Paulinho

I don’t rate Jay Thomas that highly. Nice touch for a big man is about all I can say about him.

He played against Seville in pre-season and didn’t touch the ball during the whole game.

Probably the most overrated of our youngsters, whose versatility has made him appear better than he really is.

  47. A

i dunno paulinho – he does have a very nice touch, and dominates games for the youth team, really takes them by the scruff of the neck. I do have big doubts as to how much his size advantage has to do with the extent to which he pisses all over other youth teams, and whether as he plays with men his influence will diminish, but the more i see of him the better he seems. He seems to be really intelligent going forward, makes the right choices most of the time, and really has a wand of a left foot, his ability to switch the play is fantastic

  48. A

why stu?! if ade goes then it’s because we’ve got vp, eduardo, bendtner, theo, vela all firing, why buy a young austrian nobody who’d start out behind all those five?!

if ade goes, and we do decide we need to sign someone else, then it’d only be worth it if we were to get a really top talent, like a bezeama or villa, and that’s never gonna happen

  49. Stu

    Just saying like!

Janko has been one of the best forwards this season in terms of goals. Plus he is huge and would be a good plan b for when Bendtner isnt used. IF ade goes then Nik will be the only striker over 6ft…aside from Van Persie who doesnt really even win a header anyways so…

  50. Pedro

You do have the flip side of the coin… Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Eduardo and Trezeguet… but they are normally the exception!

  51. A

yeah pedro – i think it can be said that a top player will score shitloads of goals in a second rate league, but scoring shitloads of goals in a second rate league doesn’t mean you’re a top player.

i really liked the look of alves when he first arrived at middlesbrough, thought he’d turn out awesome!

  52. Pedro

A… he is incredibly slow… and his finishing is nothing short of woeful!

I liked the look of Kezman… he never kicked on either!

Gomez of Stuggart looked pretty special as well… RVN with bundles of power and pace.

  53. Stu

Pedro, do you mean “looked” as in before you saw him for Germany in the euros?

It was the same for Gomis of St.Ettiene(sp). Great for club, useless for country,

  54. benno

Morning all, if you’re talking of expensive strikers that have flopped, all you need to do is look at who the chavs have signed over the last 5 years or so, bar Anelka and Drogba. Kezman, Crespo, Shevchenko, Mutu all were expensive flops and thats only the strikers, you’ve also got Malouda, Veron and Tiago added to the did shit pile :D

  55. Stu

Mutu wasnt a flop really. He was good but the drug thing ruined him. Crespo was ok but just never settled.

  56. Pedro

Yeah Stu… I was expecting big things. Not that you can judge a player on one tournement… but he was disappointing all the same!

Benno, Mutu was a player I expected great things of… he is facing a £13mill fine over his coke habbit… shame! haha!

  57. kenny smith

i dont think we need to replace ade if he goes. we have plenty of forwards. Eduardo, RVP, Bendy, Vela, Arshavin, Theo, all can play up top

  58. Stu

    Night so Pedro.

Kenny, thats a pretty short set of forwarfs tho. Aside from Bendtner none of them win many headers.

Obviously height isnt everything but its important nontheless.

  59. A

    night pedro

stu how many tall strikers did the invincibles have? bendtner is one more than they had, and is plenty!

  60. Stu

A, i thought you of all people wouldnt compare this team to the invincibles.

Henry, Bergkanp were both 6ft+. Actually most of the team was around 6ft. But the difference is that they didnt need the height that much. They were all very top footballers and just all round brilliant players. We have vtoo few of either now imo. Plus that team were all winners etc. Its impossible to compare really.

  61. tomstoned

    cheers Stu…

well first off,,im always a *true*fan, inherited it from my father and several visits to the Swindin resident at a very young game and started travelling to Highbury at age 11…1971..and what a great year to become a fan Stu..:)since then i have been glued to bbc listening to games and have now reached *almost* 200 matches at Highbury and Emirates…and thats not all bad for a poor norwegian fan…

and so Stu the reason why i singled out senderos and djourou is quite simple ,,but note it is only my personal opinion…they just dont have it in them…im sorry to say..physically .,..fine but the way Our Beloved Arsenal wants to play fast and direct ..does not fit everyone..and i dont think the two players have the mind to match it….silvestre was in my opinion bought for nothing else than creating a better training situation…and if you ask a manu fan whats great about silvestre it isnt his talent as a player ..but his incredible attitude on the training field..Hangeland a fellow countryman whom i have watched alot during the years and i thin would be great for Our team,he can even remind me a little bit of Adams…a great team player and person..whom i think would be a loyal and true player..

well im not always right Stu…just ask my misses :)

have a great evening Stu and All…

    Best Regards tom.

  62. A

it is true, was a different team, there were still no headers of the ball though. The current squad is actually better technically than the invincibles, but granted not as athletic, in terms of speed or power. The amount of ability in the current group though is incredible, and should potential be fulfilled, we can play our own game and steamroll the opposition, without having to resort to long balls to a big man.

  63. tomstoned

agreed A….there is one thing missing from that happening and that is for the team to get more games, without to many injuries..lets hope we are seeing the proof of this happening just now..and to be a bit on the upside when it comes to all our injuries..the youngsters have grown ,,no doubt about it..if we get past roma..we will have a great spring…the positivity is there now..and as i said earlier….Our game has suddenly become more direct faster ,,,seems to me we’re on a upward spiral…:)

    best Regards tom

ArsenalKenya, Mombasagooner, Arsenalized….good to know you guys are around. Been a follow/contributor on the grove for a while.
DSTV Africa does not have rights to the FA cup this season (GTV had them before they went bust!)..and S3N/S3Ni is only available to guys on C-band (the huge mesh dish) on PAS-10, the small KU-band antennas on Eutelsat W4 cant get those channels.

Arsene Wenger feels the return of fit-again frontmen Eduardo and Theo Walcott, along with recovering captain Cesc Fabregas, can prove ”decisive” as Arsenal head into the critical phase of the season.

Wenger hopes to also have creative midfielder Fabregas back from a serious knee injury in a couple of weeks, while Czech winger Tomas Rosicky could be another in action again soon following a long lay-off.

”We are going into the final sprint. For us it is important to keep all our targets alive,” said Wenger, whose team have closed the gap on Aston Villa in the Premier League down to just three points.

”We know every game demands a big performance because we cannot slip up. Slowly, we have all of our players coming back, and that can be decisive.”

  66. Aussie Az

I have been reading these blogs for a few years now from down aussie and i think its time to comment, maybe i think in the last 2 weeks arsenal have grown and shown a lot… the game wasnt the best but a improvement, and that is with song and eboue in the mid, it can only get better…I think this season isnt a right off yet(lets hope anyways).. thats for a goo read every few days dont get much football reading down my way keep up..

  67. Duke

71, Wenger also said why not, let’s do it then. If he keeps playing the strongest team in the FA, we could do it, CL is a bit harder, but we made the final with arguably a shiter team.
