Dull, flat and lifeless… And then they woke up and it was a joy to watch.

by & filed under Uncategorized.

That first half was hardly a dream was it? However, the second half brought goals, sharp football and gave the big boys a chance to bed back in!

As I left the house, fresh from the binge drinking session I’d enjoyed the night before… I thought… you know what, this is going to be a marvelous day. The sun was shining, my hangover was waning and I was 10 minutes early to meet Geoff for once.

It didn’t quite turn out that way… Geoff cracked a tooth on the way up and performed DIY dentistry on himself with super glue… t-shirt weather turned into waterproof mac and two pair of socks weather… and it rained on us for the first time in 3 years.

Anyway… I’m not here to write a review about the weather and the bad luck… I’m here to write about what I witnessed for the ninety minutes… with a broken hand… yes… I broke my hand this weekend and I’m still putting my body on the line for the site… so for once, it’s going to be short and sweet.

The game was a non starter for me… It felt like a replay… like going through the motions… like I’d already been here before. Arsenal took a casual aproach to the game and showed this seasons trade mark lack of urgency in their approach. Our line up was an interesting one… Song and Eboue back in the mix as always.

What was amusing is my seating buddy Paul told me the line up… I questioned two of my least favourite inclusions… he told me to calm down… I agreed and said,

‘Actually, the odds are stacked pretty heavily in favour of Song and Eboue having a good game. It has to happen once in my life time!’

… and sure enough, my edumacated bluff worked out. Song had a blinder… and Eboue complimented him by having and equally ok game.

In fact, after the first half passed, Arsenal actually looked dangerously impressive. I would go as far as saying; metaphorically, I was experiencing a football hard-on. Yes, I was mentally aroused at the prospect of what our team could offer when all our players return to fitness. I was ‘chubbofied’ (sic) at the prospect of Arsene Wenger having a selection headache! I was confident that Arsenal could actually mount a trophy challenge and take 4th place… because I was EXCITED by our play!

Arsenal knocked the ball about in the second half with pace, power and finesse. Arshavin picked his way through an organised block of 8 defenders. Theo looked just as fast as he did before his injury… Carlos Vela had already show the crowd that he could be our star man up front… Eduardo finished outrageously to prove to the world that his injury blew our title challenge last year… and Kieran Gibbs proved that we have yet another superb left back coming through on the conveyor belt of solid full backs.

My hand wont last much longer… I’m like Rosicky after 14 games… you know it’s only a matter of time… but before I go… let me run you through the goals.

The first goal came from a beautiful pass sent in by Arshavin. He laid Vela off a perfectly weighted pass… the young Mexican raced past two men and chipped the beast for a masterful first in the FA Cup.

The second goal came early in the second half. Song gained control outside the box, he looked up, chipped a perfectly weighted ball into Eduardo, who outrageously volleyed with the outside of his left boot into the top corner.

Let me repeat… this goal was outrageous. Superb… amazing. Check it out if you haven’t already.

The third came when Eboue laid the ball to Song… who cleverly back healed the ball into the path of Eboue… who buried it hard and low.

Things to note:

  • > The whole team celebrated with Eboue. They all love him…
  • > Song picked up 2 assists.

Now , while I don’t see this as a turning point in either player’s careers… I have to give credit where credit is due… they done the business toady, and it was great to watch.

So, next up in the Cup is Hull, then we have the pleasure of the Chav’s.

Grovers… I’m excited again. How about you?

P.S. It was great to meet more normal people from the site. Mary, thanks for swinging by the S+B, it was great meeting a girl with an Irish accent so thick set… I needed a translator! It was also to great to meet someone I’d disagreed with on many occasions… only to find out the bastard was a 6ft 6in spitting image of our very own JD! Thanks to the rest of the gang as well… if Peroni drinking were a sport, we’d all be Gold medalists!

Enjoy the day in the sun Grovers, next up Roma and with their injury list, we could actually win this one.

Steve his gushing bollocks about how arsenal turned him into a world star and his gonna win us big games to make up for it cock. So are you gonna call yourself cesc after the food incident yesterday or what ;)

  2. A

    haha

Adebayor said: “I knew that Milan and Barcelona were interested in me but in the end I chose Arsenal.

“Arsenal are a club that I want to repay with important victories for having allowed me to become one of the great players in world football.

“I find myself well here, even if, as I say in life, you can never know what will happen in the future.”

those are the supposed quotes steve, though it doesn’t say when/where they were etc, reported in the sun and teamtalk so could be complete bollocks. The media really are trying their best to destabilise us at the moment, the daily mail story http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1160274/Arsene-beware–Gazza-role-model-admits-Arshavin.html is the most ridiculous

  3. Stu

Ade should not be allowed to speak. He never speaks snese and i never understand him anyway. He talks way to fast.

  4. Gunner8

    Absofuckingloutely

Song was imperious yesterday (it was only against Burnley, but was deffo the MOTM 4 me) he did it all.

Eboue was still crap, sure he got a goal but was his usual headless chicken self!

Great result and I am pleased for Song as most of us (99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999%) gave him a shedload.

Now if he can do that for Roma?

  5. Trinidad_G

I thought he ran at them well, had a good shot in the first half, and most of the time made passes instead of losing the ball. And his finish was probably better than Ade would have done.

  6. A

eboue was very good overall, made very good runs penetrating their defence. Couple of wayward passes but overall he created a few chances for us with his direct running and movement, and won the ball back well, as well as scoring a goal.

he wasn’t amazing but he was very good, and we’ll need him to perform like that against roma

  7. Stu

But it was only against Burnley tho. Fair enough it still had to be done but i was far from impressed with his performance.

  8. A

stu of course they do, he’s become a pantomime villain in the press, all other fans hate eboue, not because of his being bad

  9. tonyadamsisgod

I thought Eboue ran down far too many dead ends! Against better opposition any decent defender would be able to steer him away from goal far to easily. He cant go past anyone so he has to try and go around them which usually results in a dart inside and eventually ends up with him facing his own goal. Or diving to get a free kick.

  10. nick

Eboue has got to be our worst player, if he thinks yesterdays goal makes up for the crap his done this season. Even yesterday he was shite but got a goal

  11. tonyadamsisgod

Most of my non-Asrenal friends think Eboue is a twat too! They seem him like a lot of people see Ronaldo but without having to admit that he has class…….

  12. Stu

Thats just his 4th Arsenal goal. Thats just shocking for a midfielder and someone who was a great attacking fullback.

  13. ethangunner

    hmmmm

so i can either sit here at home and debate with A how bad song is or i can go out to soi 6 were all the naked ladies are in there gogo bars and make a night of it …

    hmm tough choice :)

    later lads dont wait up

  14. Stu

My best mate even says the opposition all must hate when Eboue gets subbed off because it means they have work to do with defending against the sub.

  15. A

imo djourou is currently our worst player. The prospect of his playing on weds if kolo is out scares the crap out of me. If he plays a quarter as bad as he did in the last two games against very poor opposition we’ve guaranteed roma at least one goal, they won’t fail to capitalise on his mistakes as west brom and burnley did.

He’s lacking match practice or whatever but we can’t help that, so if kolo doesn’t make it i’d play song there ahead of him

  16. Steve

nick, I can’t call myself Cesc yet. It wasn’t pizza and Odub doesn’t look the the 100% proof nosed Govan old soak.

  17. Stu

What happened to JD. He was playing well, got dropped for a while and is playing like shit now. Odd sint it. Same happened to Senderos in a way.

  18. tonyadamsisgod

A – yeah he looked very out of sorts didn’t he. That header he left! Lack of match sharpness becomes far more apparent when you are in such a pivotal position! I think it is purely not getting the games though because he soon settles down when he has a long run in the team.

  19. A

he wasn’t dropped stu, he got injured, and just didn’t get back into the team, but yeah he was much better when he was having a run in the side.

You’d expect some rustiness, lack of match fitness etc when someone hasn’t been playing regularly, but not to the extent that djourou’s gone to shit since he came back into the team.

  20. Trinidad_G

I’m not defending Eboue or Song but I think it sucks when we play a good, impressive game, and actually win, score 3 goals, clean sheet …. instead of being happy the mood is “it was only burnley”

Does that mean if we lose against Chelsea people would say ” it’s okay, we lost but it was against Chelsea”

It doesn’t matter who we play against. A win is good and a loss is bad.

  21. A

yeah taig, wasn’t just the header he left, the ridiculous challenge that should have been a stone wall penalty too! and against west brom he made so many stupid mistakes, giving away stupid fouls (including the one for the goal), unnecessary corners etc, seems REALLY out of sorts and against very very poor opposition too.

we really can’t afford that against roma

  22. A

it’s ridiculous trinadad, if anyone people don’t like have a good game, then “it’s only burnley”, but (often with the same people) if it’s vela, or eduardo, then it’s absolutely amazing, showing their class, should be starting every game etc

  23. A

i dunno about that nick, he was alongside kolo against west brom, and that was one of the worst defensive performances i’ve seen from an arsenal player, on par with sol’s capitulation and stepanovs against utd!

  24. Trinidad_G

Maybe our players think like that too that’s why we are 5th in the league … we can beat ManU and Chelsea, but when we’re up against “only hull, only fulham, only sunderland” we can’t win. Three points is the same against anyone, and a cup win is the same against anyone. If we play Everton in the FA cup final would we be happy, or reserved because it was only Everton?

  25. nick

I dont think he has turned in to a bad player over night his just rusty and would rather he gets it out his system against the crap teams if he plays in Rome it will be the magic 3rd game and he will be fine you mark my words.

  26. tonyadamsisgod

A – I think Wenger is going to put all of his eggs into the attacking basket and hope that his strikers get at least one goal to put some daylight between us and Roma.

Does anyone think we could see Eduardo start or was Bendtner rested for that very reason?

  27. nick

I think nikki will start with rvp but eddie will feature at some point i also think he will start eboue with walcott again coming on at some point

  28. Pires02

Yeah, I can see Bendter wide in a 4-5-1 with nasri ahead of song and denilson and eboue on the right,

  29. Trinidad_G

    PLayers most likely to start:
regular back 5, Nasri, Denilson, Eboue, RVP …….with maybe Bendtner and Diaby? Or Song?

  30. Trinidad_G

Or do you think he’ll start with Theo and try to get an early goal, then bring on Eboue or Song for “defensive balance”

  31. insidealbania

hello Grovers, it was a nice second half yesterday as you mentioned in the post by Pedro (and I hope your hand recovers quickly).

The Eduardo goal was pure class and Ade should learn from that.

Most of what I want to say about EE and Song has been said already. But I just wanted to mentione one thing.
Did anyone notice the reaction of AW to the Eboue goal? For me it was a mixture of ‘Oh shit did that really happen’ and ‘I knew they can do it’

  32. Pires02

No. Think he’ll believe that by playing Bendtner wide, and Nasri behind RvP that he’ll have enough attacking options to score. Eboue appears all over the pitch these days as well so I think he’ll rely on Song and Denilson for discipline.

  33. tonyadamsisgod

The formation will definately be 4-5-1 for tomorrow and I think it will look something like this:

    Almunia
    Sagna – Kolo – Gallas – Clichy
    eBay/Theo – Song – Diaby – Denilson – Bendtner
    Nasri
    RvP

There is a lot to be said for leaving eBay on the bench. If Sagna get injured (Touch wood he doesn’t) then eBay is cover for RB. Of course there is the fact that he is shit as well……..

  34. tonyadamsisgod

Wenger loves a 4-5-1 in European competition. I understand the logic of being a little more defensively minded when you are playing away but Wenger even plays that system at home now. He started doing in last years CL campaign.

  35. nick

Ebay :) i would like him to be the back up right back sagna could do with a rest and also clichy should be rested in place of gibbs when the opposition allows it

  36. tonyadamsisgod

Thats what my Mrs calls him! She’s a Spuds fan (hear’s of the odd score every now and then when her Dad tells her) but I let her off as long as she keeps up her hatred levels of eBay.

  37. kelsey

How many of us would have actually guessed the line up yesterday, not many I am sure.I have a feeling nasri will be a sub in rome with denilson strating,as he definitely plays better at home.I see eduardo starting with rvp tucked in behind, and Vela also dropping to the bench.Otherwise only Kolo coming in for JD and Almunia for Fab and Clichy for Gibbs.nic on the bench for AA

  38. tonyadamsisgod

Yeah! They have given us special dispensation as we HAVE to play eBay even thoughhe is fucking terrible. They ahve realised that Wenger is a mentalist and will always play him and have decided to act on the fans behalf……and for the sake of the game!

  39. tonyadamsisgod

Nick – I guess so! She’s a spud, my sister is a spud, my mum is a chav, the father in law is a spud, the brother in law is a manc…….whats going on! I’ve never truly stepped back and realised the magnitude of the mess I have found myself in! ha ha…….

  40. nick

Kelsey your right weneger seems to have noticed how predictable his starting teams were becoming and keeps throwing curve balls to the line up which is good to see i think

  41. kelsey

    Pires02,

I have admired Diaby from day one,the trouble is what is his best position.he definitely is more attack minded, started from the left against Liverpool in the CL away, and scored, but i feel of all the superfit players we have(that aren’t injured)he above all lacks stamina. He will give you an hour and that’s that.As said before he is an enigma.

  42. Trinidad_G

Kelsey I think Nasri will start, he was rested this weekend, looking forward to Roma. I’d say Nasri, Denilson, RVP are almost sure starters

  43. Pires02

I agree there. I really thought he had all the touches of Patrick when I first saw him with the flick over the players head etc, but he has been blighted by injury. I like him down the middle without too many defensive duties. When Cesc comes back though I think once again his chances will be limited so I’m not sure when he’ll get the run of games (and luck) he needs.

  44. A

yeah pires – that’s why i don’t see diaby’s future being with us. He’s had alot of bad luck with injuries and such like, which has set him back, and currently he isn’t sound enough defensively or tactically to play alongside cesc.

He won’t be good enough to be in our first team regularly until he develops, and he won’t develop until he plays regularly in someone’s first team, so I think he could move on at some point soon, otherwise he’ll be very unlikely to fulfil his undoubted potential

reserve team named for tonight, be interesting to see if JET and Frimpong can build on their impressive performances in the youth cup

  45. reggie57

    A
You still reckon Ya Ya is on his way and
thats why you think diaby has no future
    with us,if so i agree 100% fella

  46. A

yeah reggie i do reckon yaya is still a good bet, or if not him then someone else. Which means if diaby was to stay it’d be to play in more attacking positions, and with cesc, nasri, arshavin, rosicky, theo, vela, he wouldn’t even be back up in the wide or deep lying striker positions.

He could well stay, as his ability to gallop and drive forward is something that is unique to him out of our centre mids, but for him to develop as a player he needs to play regularly, and that won’t happen with us

  47. reggie57

Yeah i like diaby but to injury prone for
my liking, and stamina wise he seems knackered
after a hour, cant make out why can you?

  48. kelsey

Talking about injury prone players, which seems to be part of the agenda these days, why the feck did we buy Silvestre and give Bischoff a one year deal .Anyone see the logic in that ?

  49. A

what you mean about bischoff kelsey?

i understand the logic of silvestre, bringing in a very experienced centre back who can also play at left back, somewhere we’ve got no cover really, and for fuck all cost. Hasn’t really worked out though.

bischoff is someone i really like the look of, and looking forward to seeing him tonight for the reserves

  50. Keyser

Diaby came back after a month out and I think he’s played pretty regularly ever since, our schedule’s been pretty tough over the last few weeks and he’s worked hard.

Silvestre was bought because he was cheap and relatively experienced, Bischoff because he cost nothing and has potential.

  51. kelsey

But he never plays Bischoff, and I think he is on a one year deal.He was an amateur until a year before he left his german club, and had nine months out with a double groin operation.OK he was free, but he must be on good wages. If you kick out all the crap players on 30/40k a week, and buy one or 2 experienced players,it wouldn’t alter our wage bill much.

  52. A

i’m sure bischoff will be on very very minimal wages. He’s on a year’s deal, becauase if he gets over his injury and breaks into our squad, then he’ll get offered an extension, if he doesn’t then he’s cost us very little in terms of wages and fee, and he’ll go in the summer. Can’t really lose. No way bischoff will be on much more than 10k a week, if that

  53. Trinidad_G

Bischoff is playing for the reserves, he didn’t buy him as a first team player. He is a Portugal under 21 international that we got for nothing at all. Do you know he’s getting 30-40 K a week?

  54. Pedro

A, I think I read that minimum wage for a foreigner who is over the age of 20 was £25k?

I can’t remember where I read that… but our standard first contract pays £15k.

  55. nick

if bitchslap is getting 30-40k a week adewontscore looks good for 100k no way should he be getting that sort of money when you think cole fucked off over 5k and flamini that cant be right can it?

  56. A

what you mean by minimum wage??! as in i meant 10k a week, not a salary over a year, which is what you’re referring to i’d imagine?

  57. Trinidad_G

Oh .. not related but on the topic of the “exceptional talent” work permit for Song … I think it’s granted based on selection for the national team and the fifa ranking of the said national team.

  58. Keyser

The German league actually has a pretty decent reserve competition for the youth and reserve players, he wasn’t bought to play straight away but as a calculated ‘gamble’ and has shown some promise.

No way is on 30/40k, I don’t even think Adebayor’s on 80, but then people are willing to believe he’s on a 110k, on the back of a third party over hearing him shout something supposedly in the heat of the moment.

  59. Pedro

Keyser, I think Arsenal load players up with bonuses… so his basic may be £60k… but after all the rest is added in, I am sure he is well looked after.

  60. Gunner8

I wish somone would make a youtube compilation of all the Eboue dives, running into dead ends, passing the ball to the oposition and then send it to Wenger.

Again he offered nothing all game was continuously out of position up front and on the LHS!

Some of you really need specs and like Adebayor after three easy chances scores!

Seriously though if he chose to ride out a tackle for a change instead of going to ground at the slightest of touches then I could start to build some respect for him.

He is an incarnation of Savage… …as Pedro mentioned the team seems to love him.

I had some serious nightmares yesterday when he picked up Eduardo after he scored and I just had images of Steve Morrow!

  61. A

where could there be a minimum wage of 25k a week?! as in specifically to arsenal, we say only pay people minimum or 25k a week?!

  62. Pedro

    Standard contract.

Like there is a standard youth team contract, there is a standard contract offered to foreign imports…

  63. Keyser

Pedro – Adebayor or Bischoff ? Ithink thats how it should be, the better you perform, the more you earn.

Yeah, I think Bergkamp took a paycut in his final season to something like 20k, but then again thats something I read in a paper.

  64. Pedro

    Chipo… no way.

He’d get more in the Championship. It’s not like he was on the scrap heap. His old club offered him a new contract, but Arsene went in with a better offer.

    £5k a week… not in a million years!

  65. Keyser

It wasn’t just a better offer, I think he was genuinely happy that we were still interested, Bremen are a good side, but Arsenal do still have some pull.

Ebway had a good game yesterday.

  66. Pedro

Keyser, I bet a lot of our explayers would have done that. If you’re 36 and of Bergkamps calibre… you’ve got some money stored away!

Totally agree… reward great play with great money. Obviously they still need some security in there… but I doubt Ade gets straight up £80k a week.

  67. Pedro

Reggie… he is grateful of his chance…but not that grateful.

Why would you go to a club and earn less than the 17 year olds?

  68. Gunner8

    Bollywood man, Bollywood!

While the curry was great, it was rouch on the dancefloor with that breath although my john travolta-like skills more than compensated for the (changing ligtbulbs light a mad man)

Missed Sunday’s as well but will be back for the Blackburn… …no S&B on Saturday but will be there for Tuesday!

  69. nick

Gunner8 your spot on ebay is cnut and i thought the same thing when he picked eduardo up ”put him down you useless fucker” that goal papered over the same shit performance he puts in every week

  70. nick

fuck thats like getting paid to go the gym and the mercenaire fucker will probbly fuck off some where else any way once his fit

  71. Chipo

well i guess there’s no point talking about it cos we’ll never really know.

let’s talk about something else, like if there’s a god lol

  72. Pedro

Reggie, he’ll be moaning next year that he wants a new contract! Footballers live in dream world… I’d like to live there to!

Curry at an indian? haha! I hope you weren’t wearing the JT white suit to match your dance moves!

I didn’t really rate Eboue’s performance. I was surprised that a player with that much pace offered so little threat? I thought Carlos Vela was good… and I just can’t get enough of watching an intelligent striker play for us!

  73. A

bischoff i thought had to take a pay cut as bremen had offered him a new contract with improved wages?

If there is a standard wage for foreign aquisitions, bischoff would be a special case because it’s more of a trial contract than a real contract, and just a year. I’d bet my house that he’s not on as much as 25k, and very likely nearer half that

  74. Pedro

The average salary in the Prem is £13,000 a week… we’ve got the second highest wage bill in the prem. I would say that there is very little chance the Bisch is earning £5k a week…. the average salary in the championship is £3750 p/w.

  75. reggie57

One of my mates said that eboues goal
reminded him of Carlos Albertas goal for
brazil against italy in the 1970 world
cup final? mind you saying that he only
got released from broadmoor last week

  76. A

bischoff will be on way under our average salary though – probably somewhere around the premiership’s average. what’s our average salary?

  77. A

haha i hope that verbal contract isn’t binding! still, consider it a pretty safe bet, though i guess we’ll never know!

  78. Pedro

Our pro contracts start at £15k a week… well they did…

My mate has a buddy at Spurs and he reckons theirs start at £20k a week after your first game!

    Madness…

  79. nick

Right im off down the gym that i pay 60 quid a month for i should have rang wenger and see if he wanted to sponser another fatty for a year.Good night all

  80. treze13

Finally a day at school where i could talk about a great performance by the gunners, about bloody time

  81. A

that would explain why we’ve got such a high wage bill then – seems ridiculous how small the difference is between the lowest and highest paid players though.

Must be a good 20 players who’ve never played for the first team, but getting paid above the premiership average?!

  82. Gunner8

    Night Nick,

While at the same time A we are developing these players so they can eventually go and play for Spursh

  83. A

being a geek and doing some maths, seems we’re spending then about £25million a year on our players who aren’t in the first team squad the vast majority of the time, which is half our overall budget, seems absolutely ridiculous!

  84. Gunner8

A that is what most of us have been saying all season, we have few STARS Cesc Arshavin, RVP Walcott and Rosicknote compared to United, Chelsea and Liverpool but we are paying out like them!

    Crazy

  85. Arsenal Tom

Benitez said the same thing a while ago… that we pay our youngsters allot which is another reason that we get so many of the best young players from around the world.

i bet denilson gets a new contract this summer

  86. A

it’s not average players that’s costing us then kelsey, and it isn’t the top young players. If our basic pro contract is 15k, then there are by my count a good 27 reserve players on that.

it’s the likes of rodgers, ogogo, rasmusen, shea, cruise, eastmond, watt, steer, all being on 15k, which is just under 800k a year that’s costing us.

  87. A

i hope denilson does tom, he’s earnt it massively this year.

if the kids who’ve come from the youth team are on 15k, bischoff 25k, and the likes of fabianski, song, eboue, denilson, diaby can’t be on much more than them, which is pretty ridiculous

  88. Arsenal Tom

A, Yeah it just depends how much he gets mate, he’s probably on 25k ish now, so he’ll get bumped to 40k ish id have thought, if he carries on improving like he is then its worth it.

  89. A

    i reckon kingsley it’d be –

    ——–Almunia——–

    Sagna–Toure–Gallas–Clichy

    Arshavin–Cesc–Denilson–Rosicky

    ——–VP—-Eduardo——–

    A… its hard aint it?

id go with that team though, hard to leave theo and nasri out… i think we’re definitely gonna sell one of our attackers this summer though.

ade, bendtner, vela, nasri, theo, diaby all on the bench plus ramsey, jack and merida… thats allot of players to keep happy
