Arsenal get the new Nesta? Does he join Bartley, Upson, Nordveit and Senderos then?

by & filed under Uncategorized.

I read with interest that we have beaten Spurs to the signing of young Hungarian defender Mate Toth a 17 year old that has been likened to Nesta, the great Italian stopper.

We have heard that before though have we not? The thing is, in my humble opinion world class defenders do not become world class defenders until they are at least 24, history proves that, as we ourselves have seen with recent signings, have any of them have gone on to become the next Adams, or Bould? No is the answer, one is the shape of Upson maybe, but he is now 29, I wonder if the boss will ever break from his youth is the answer in defence plan, I wonder if the boss will ever see that apart from Cesc Fabregas\Clichy, has anyone made the grade at Arsenal before they got to 24?

I think the answer is no, so with the undoubted intelligence our leader, coupled with his obsession with statistics why has he not worked that one out? None of our great players ever really made it until they went past 24, Pires, Henry, Bergkamp, Freddie, Campbell, Keown, Flamini, Hleb, Smith, Merson, Wright and Parlour to name but a few, they were all in the mid twenty’s.

You need experience and age to teach you wiliness and craft, you also need to build up your body or you get what Theo has, bonal problems, now Cesc of course is an exception and I think Nasri, Johan, Wilshere and Ramsey will be as well, but to get through the rigours of a season in this country, we need some talent that has gone past 24. Please Rosicky has to be the exception, he has bundles of talent but he is a crock.

Players like Chellieini and Alonso would fit in well and that is precisely why we should not give up on Arshavin, personally I don’t think we will or we have, and by the end of this week he will be an Arsenal player.

A good solid midfielder, a world class centre back and a playmaker like Arshavin will turn this team from also rans to world beaters, and if the powers that be at Arsenal cannot see that, then they should not be running a football team.

I watched the 94/95 season on Arsenal TV last night, and in the Premier league we were woeful, we got to the final of the cup winners cup and lost to Real Zaragoza and that goal! But in those days we always over achieved, and signing a few players would never have seen us dominate, that took Wenger and his revolution 2 years later to do that, and that clearly showed that bringing in the right players to mix it with the stalwarts worked, then we won the double.

I say learn from what you did in 1998 Arsene, it really is three players short of a wonderful picnic and we’re there. Go out and sign Arshavin, he’ll still cost you less than Wiltord did 9 years ago and he will supply the lift that this club needs so desperately.

If you get him this week maybe he could get a run out at Cardiff and maybe the masses will start talking about the mighty Arsenal again.

Have another hopeful day today Grovers, if you hear the words PRESS and CONFERENCE in the same sentence today it will mean we have just signed the worlds 6th best player.

he has been an unused sub 3 times in serie A and once he played for 8 mins (against fiorentina) as a sub. Apart from that he has featured twice as a starter in the uefa cup against pompey and wolfsburg. the wolfsburg game he only lasted 9 mins on the pitch due to an injury

  2. David

Burnley just might score again….and Eagles is a class act….but i think the other Bale…no 10 for Burnley has been MOTM imo

Haahaahaahaahaa!!! How do you spell shrawdenfreuder? Or what ever the feck it is!

  4. Pedro

Wrighty… that Ole Gunnar is an annoying fella… he is always the know it all who disagrees with everything that isn’t 100% up Arsene Wenger’s ass!

Name one young player we’ve over spent on… dear oh dear…

    Top post by the way!

  5. Franchise

i saw the pompey game and the fiorentina game. Nothing strikin about his performances. I believe we have got a liability in our hand in Senderos. Very good professional but not good enough. If only we could pump his professionalism into Eboue we would have a decent player in Eboue to rely on.

  6. A

To be fair I can’t think of a kid who we’ve overspent on??!

I still have high hopes for senderos, hopefully he’ll return in the summer, or now if milan succeed in signing their own centre back

  7. Pedro

A, if you think we are getting VFM on a £100million wage bill… then maybe you wouldn’t think we’d over spent on kids.

  8. Wrighty7

    A,

Wenger would pay top notes for a promising youngster and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

But lets not forget Arsenal pay the youngsters a huge amount of money.

I just think that we should go that little bit extra in securing proven players.

  9. Maqitlarge

Whatever happens. Harry has been found out and I don’t give a fuck what the papers say in the morning about houdini or whatever…

  10. A

i dunno wrighty, most of our big money kids are bought with very reasonable prices that could rise to big fees with performance-related add-ons. But if they perform well enough to get the add ons then they have become good enough to warrant that price as such.

Its also because buying kids for relative big bucks means that we could then when they develop sell them for 5/6 times what we paid for them, whereas even if established players settle in and do as well as we hope, they are only going to command the same we paid for them (if we pay over the odds) at best, and more often than not less.

  11. David

My thing is…as Geoff pointed out earlier….We have 2 Billionares on our Board….what the fuck is another 5 million to them?

If we dont get Arshavin….im going to lose every respect i have left for the board.

    Stingy farts.

  12. patthegooner

Akinbiyi got fouled just before Pavlychenko’s goal. I said straigtht away, these Flukey twats will score now.

    Fucking Lucky Arseholes.

That would have been worth being knocked out by Burnley if they could have pulled that comeback out the bag……

Oh well looks Like I have to Support Man Ure for 90 mins

  13. Angry Loner

    Now my plan A comes into play;

The spuds will save themselves for the final, therefore not doin shit in the league and….da..daaaaarrrrr!!!

    Relegation!

  14. patthegooner

    So apparently tomorrow is D-Day

    Will we sign him?

I have a feeling we might, Arshavin is making the right noises today and it might just make them accept.

  15. Pedro

A, I think what Wrighty is saying is that we are quite willing to outbid and out pay anyone on a kid… but not on an established player.

Surely there has to be a happy medium?

Plus… you can’t always look at the fee… you have to look at the wages, the cost of training, the house they bought the parents… etc.

  16. Angry Loner

My hopes now rest with God. Apart from him, nobody can help me,” Arshavin, 27, said. “I see Arsenal as my team of the future. Everything now depends on Zenit. If they want to sell me, they can do it very quickly.”

  17. Pedro

Who cares about spurs… they got beaten by Burnley and they’ll get beaten in the final.

Harry can only do a good job when he is spending 80% of the clubs turnover on wages…

  18. Evo in Oz

2 x great strikes by whilshere, his first with the outside of his foot curling it back into the net was bloody amazing and the 2nd was from outside the box on an angle – a corker also!

woeful defending by us on the 2 stoke goals and Eduardo completed 90 mins and could have scored the winner but was adjudged offside.

  19. Evo in Oz

mate that it was my friend. he totally decided to score that goal during the build up the way he did. it looked like it was in slow motion watching him get ready to strike the ball with the outside of his foot like he did. and watching the ball fly through the air into the net seemed like an eternity, it was awesome!

  20. PDT

Spuds to lose 2-1 in the finals to two late strikes in injury time after leading through most of the match!

Heart broken, they will then go on a 10 game losing streak to be relegated!

    Something to look forward to!

  21. A

evo the second was a deflected cross come shot! First goal was incredible though, reminded me of ronaldinho’s against chelsea with the outside of his foot, amazing technique

  22. Stu

A, Bra…erm, i mean Wilsheres first was better than Ronaldinhos imo. Harder angle and players in his way. Ronaldino basically just toe-poked it.

Also im pretty sure than its only the two of us that rate Senderos on here.
I’ld welcome him back. Before recently he would certainly get into our defence.

Its a shame he has been injured while over in Italy. Lets hope that he has learned something in training off Nesta, Maldini etc.

  23. Stu

Wouldnt it be a disgrace if Spuds beat the mancs in the final.

Then they would have more trophies in the space of 13months than Us, the Chavs and pool combined.

Although i’d gladly have them win it if they went on a similar run to last season.

  24. Stu

Well lets hope that God doesnt have any media access because all those cunts hate us!

If he sees himself here then we will be made to look like massive mugs if we dont sign him.

PHW said “If we don’t get him, we don’t get him. There are other fish in the sea.”

We already have silvestre. We dont need any more damn fish. We need world class players and Arshavin represents a step forward and a statement of intent.

If we dont get him there will or at least should be uproar from all the fans, especially as its gone on for so long.

  25. Stu

Anyone know anything about Serdar Tasci? He is linked with us and AC milan. Plays CB for Stuttgart and still 21. I know we need defenders but is a 21year old a necessity, especially given the current post?

  26. David

I just think its still a big disgrace we have 2 billionaires….Zenit say they will accept 15 million….even if it is 18 million…what is 5 more million to 2 billionares!

We sure do have the money!

  27. kingsley

“We are certainly conducting negotiations directly with the Arsenal chief executive,” Mitrofanov told Sport Express.

“The footballer’s agent (Lachter) is not taking part in them.

“Because of this he simply does not know all the details of the process of negotiation, and in this sense his comments should not always be trusted.

“As regards the process itself, as I have already said, it is not simple, but it is moving and we hope that it will lead to its logical conclusion.”

  28. Alan Sham

When you say that arsenal players don’t make the grade before 24…u need to realise that we buy them young, so that the time it takes for them to become good is wen they are still quite young. If we buy wen their 24, by the time it takes to turn them into a great player is about 28. by then, their career’s over

  29. Geoff

Yes but at 24 they fuck off don’t they? and we only get to see them learn their trade when they aren’t that good, Anelka and Cesc being the exceptions.

  30. kelsey

This away goal counting only after extra time in pathetic.Basically Burnley get 90 minutes away and the spuds get 120 minutes.

Why are the rules different for every competition, when it’s basically the same game.

Spurs were not up for it, they thought they had won the game in the first leg,and Harry is equally to blame for his team selection.I suppose they will continue the merry go round of players in and out and most probably boot out harry eventually until they finally sucumb to relegation.

  31. Goonerman

Kelsey – I saw the match; the one who stands out for me is Emmanuael Thomas; gangly and on late. he makes things happen.

  32. kelsey

yes, I only saw the latter part of the game, but when E Thomas has occasionaly stepped up to play in the c.c.(i think) and the preseason emirates tournament, he was found wanting.
