I seem to remember you saying that last year, oh and the year before Arsene, injuries are part and parcel of football, we seem to have more than most, but that’s because we buy injury prone players, Eduardo and Cesc being the exception.
We can’t keep relying on players coming back, it didn’t work last season and it won’t work this, we need new players, we need 2 class players in each position because injuries and a long season dictate that.
Cesc said buying players does not guarantee success and ManU only win titles because ‘Their philosophy of attacking football was clear and they were rewarded for that.’
Well that and the fact they have spent more money on players than we turn over, Ronaldo, Rooney, Ferdinand, Carrick, Anderson, Nani, Hargreaves, Tevez and Berbatov to name but a few, going back Van Nistleroy, Saha and Veron to name a few more. And all those I just named cost more than Wiltord, our record signing of 9 years ago. (sorry Ronaldo was £1mil cheaper)
It’s a fact of life that clubs spend money, other clubs that spend more than we do include… well everyone except WBA, Stoke and Hull and if you work out that Nasri, Coquelin and Ramsey equated to Hleb, Gilberto and Hoyte, then we spent less than anyone and frankly that’s not acceptable.
Billionaire owners, like them or not are here to stay, Villa, Liverpool, ManU, Tottenham, City, West Ham and Portsmouth are all owned by billionaires, and yes I know a few of them are in trouble, but we aren’t and we don’t have to spend anymore than we got from sell ons to get the players we need, so I’m at a loss to work out why Arsenal haven’t spent our money.
Wenger in his wisdom turned down Palacios and sold Diarra, Diarra was sold on for £15mil more than we sold him for and Palacios just turned down a £16mil move to the spuds, so we aren’t that clever in the market anymore either are we?
Arshavin and a centre back would do, chuck in a defensive midfielder of note and we still have a shot a 3 trophies, Arshavin is the 6th best player in the world, why haggle when we know that Milan or someone else will pick him up for a few mil more, didn’t we learn by not signing Alonso?
Why did we bring in Gazidas? To sell more boxes or to negotiate some decent players?
I watched the kids play yesterday and Steve Bould let slip that Frimpong was told not to shoot from distance, but they let him off as he nearly scored three times, what an admission, don’t shoot, and that’s company policy! No wonder we go sideways like Pedro’s crab.
I have tried several times to get Danny Fizman on and this week I tried to get Tom Watt, but they don’t want to know, they won’t even explain why they don’t want to know either, I guess that shows they don’t give a rats arse what we the fans think at all, just give us your money, sit down and shut up, oh and watch Arsenal TV and the propaganda machine in full flow.
I will watch the Hull game tomorrow and pray the fringe players start to show us what they can do, we know Song will play and we know Eboue will play so I will get behind them, Alexandre and Emmanuel if you are reading this, go prove me wrong, please show us why Wenger has this faith in you, if you have a blinder your name will light this blog up on Sunday, I promise, I will be the first to admit I was wrong, or at least Pedro will as he does the match reports.
Meanwhile Arsene, please sign Arshavin and two others before we see another season go down the shitter, please.
We are all Arsenal fans, that’s why we write a blog and that’s why our Grovers spend hours on it commenting, we deserve at least to see our money get spent, it wasn’t long ago we had players like Bergkamp, Pires, Henry, Overmars and Campbell in the ranks, get a few names in and we’ll clean up.
One last thing, on Arsenal TV often celebrities name their all time Arsenal team, I would say 90% of them have Seaman, Dixon, Winterburn, Adams, Keown, Bould, Bergkamp and Wright in them, and you know what, you didn’t sign any of them.
The lesson there is all the great Arsenal teams had a fantastic defence with two big centre backs, a great keeper and at least two world class superstars up front.

Morning all; Geoff I hate it when Wenger talks about a crock returning and says “ them coming back will be lie a new signing” – GGRR! We don’t want things that are LIKE a new signing, we want ACTUAL new signings as you’ve persistently replaced quality with chunder. It’s not worked for the last 4 years and it won’t work anytime soon.
Let’s hope we get a bit of “screaming for vengeance” from the team tomorrow as Hull really is one of the cess pits of the north. The guy who scored the winner against us(Cousin) scored against the bar codes mid week so we’d better watch out.

Bould let the same thing slip a few months ago after Coquelin had scored a goal. He said somethign about how he had instructed Coquelin not to shoot in those situations, but Coquelin had done so anyway and scored.
If I could look on the downside for a moment….

We finish the season with nothing, yet again…will AW be fired in the summer?

Good morning Grovers, Wenger has publicly stated that he is looking to sign Arshavin so that’s good news for us, and Gazprom know he will stick to his principles of playing the youth and not paying an extra 5 million just to get the deal sealed as they would like, Wenger has offered 12 and to be fair it is a decent offer although that means the club are prepared to lose 12 million of value nd I’d rather we bought Ashley Young for 30 and sold him on for 18 although I can’t say how the club would feel about having so much capital locked into one player.
The Kaka deal will affect us in a major way. Kaka is being bought for brand value and as a magnet for other players and now it will be even more difficult to compete for top players.
I can empathise with contract negotiations happening at the moment, both sides gambling and playing cut throat hardball, I’ve been involved in such dealings over the past few days, successfully, although I actually hate it, too much cortisol in the body is highly unpleasant, so I’m going to be very busy over the next few months.
I’ve met some interesting people over the past few days, people that I’d never expect a regular dude like me to be talking with and sitting next to….I have a few snippets of news not relating to Arsenal you may be interested in. Word is Stevie G will be acquitted and could even sue the Police, and Abramovich is in heavy financial turmoil, he lost about 22 billion over the past few months, he certainly won’t be investing big in Chelsea. I cannot confirm this information, it is just word….anyway, lets thrash Hull, get back on track, I’m very hopeful the Arshavin deal will go through and that we’ll put up a very strong fight over the second half of the season.

If you want a manager who’s ever going to make a proper fist of building a squad for the short term, then Wenger needs to go now.
He isn’t going to get the deals done this January, because he has never been able to cope with the post-Chelsea era – he’s out of touch with the modern game, and he’s out of touch with the reality of this team, and, most certainly 100%, he’s totally out of touch with the reality of the transfer market.
Wenger will not do the business this January, and will end up making a £30m fuck up if we don’t (the money we’ll lose by finishing 5th). If the board have half a wit between them, they’ll fire the moron in the summer.

The fact is, it will take a certain amount of money to get this done, and Arsenal aren’t willing to pay that much. The interest was only there when Wenger thought he could get a real bargain, but Zenit and Arsenal’s valuation was always too far apart to ever meet.
He won’t be signing with us. Wenger doesn’t have the cojones to push this one through.

I’ve had enough of Wenger, I have to say.
I can’t remember the last time he’s handled a transfer window remotely competently, and that’s now such a big flaw in his management that I just can’t see how we can continue to let him pursue his own bizarre ideologies at the expense of the club. Back when it was us and Utd (and we didn’t have such a ridiculous transfer policy), we were so far ahead of other clubs that we didn’t have to worry too much about the odd mistake.
Now the margins are so fine, and there’s no room for error, and yet he’s making shedloads of them. I thought there was an outside chance that he’d seen the errors of his way this January, but obviously not.
We need to get shot, absolutely, and as soon as possible.

I think you will find that there aren’t many in there. Wenger, its simple. Most people think £15m is acceptable. We may be right. You may be right. You may end up being proving that he is not worth that much when we look back at it. But what is true is that it is definitely a deal that is worth risking, especially if Fizman has given you the green light that he has done publicly on so many occasions now.
I also have a feeling that if arshavin mouths off too much.. he could be shot!!!
PDT, I agree with Jimbo in that I read his comment as asking for Wenger to be removed from contract negotiations – Wenger should stick to first team affairs and only say “I want X player” – after that he should butt out. I suspect Wenger thinks he is some sort of football version of George Soros.

I don’t think the Arshavin deals simple, he was worth 16 odd million in the summer no-one came in for him, he can buy out his contract or leave on a free in the next summer ? So obviously his value is determined somewhere in between.
We bid 10-12 million up front, but since he’s untested in the Premier League and he’s in between seasons and his cup tied, we give the rest of it in add ons because of this and the price seems pretty damn fair considering he could leave for a lot less in the summer.
Zenit are just trying to take the piss and maximise their profit by touting him all over the place and playing it up the public eye hopefully finding bids from elsewhere.
Although I’m not very keen on the Arsh, I think we’d be getting him judging from Wenger’s recent comments. From his exaggerated cautious approach, to have said that he is hopeful of signing him publicly suggests to me that the deal is closer to being done than we might think.

in 2006/07 we were dumped out by PSV in the 2nd round of the Champions League and we finished 4th in the league. Manchester won the League and got to the semis of the Champions league. Based on that they probably generated more revenue from Premier League prize money and their gates and bonuses for their advanced progress in the CL. They generated like £34million more that year. I bet the margins would have been much closer if we had tied them for first in the league :p and also gotten to the semi-finals of the CL.

excited to see that we are in fact televised this weekend. I took in the bolton match on saturday and the youth on tuesday. i thought frimpong looked great but as has surely been said before, wilshere seems to be light years ahead of the rest. coquelin is an exciting prospect as well and displayed the same tenacity as i had seen in him during the preseason. the difference between watching the match at the emirates and at barnet was staggering. being so close to the pitch really emphasized the pace of the game and was so exciting. this is clearly an extremely pricey hobby and i’d better hurry up and secure employment if i hope to secure the seemingly realistic prospect of taking in some more saturdays at the grove…

yea i didn’t know that professional and top-level youth football was played on hillside pitches! the slope was hilarious and i wonder how much easier it is to play downhill in the second half. i’m really excited to experience the atmosphere at an away match and having just secured a ticket to cardiff it’s only a matter of time! just getting off the tube at arsenal and walking around islington, checking out highbury etc. was a wonderful thrill. the TV coverage in the states is really good but it can never convey what it feels like to be around the ground on match day.

I’m not sure where I sit on the likelihood of the Russian signing; we have a few who are 100% sure either way, but what worries me, like most, is the longer the saga of Arshavin’s transfer carries on the more chance there is of another club swooping in and paying the extra £4m-£7m Zenit are holding out for. It’s pretty obvious it was Zenit’s strategy to invite higher bids by being so public about the whole transfer.
I sense another Ryan Babel scenario – a player wants to join us but for the sake of a few million(which the club would recover in shirt sales and season ticket renewals)we lose out.

San Siro seems mostly empty but they average like 60,000 and most have some corporate seats. Camp Nou is a UEFA Elite Stadium and has an average attendance of 67,000. These stadiums are not as naff as you think they are.

Looking deeper at those nos it shows that English clubs depend on gates more than their european rivals. i doubt if ac milan have a waiting list cos SanSiro is hardly full. What happens if Arsenals’s matchday revenue falls? The club would have to rely on comercial and broadcasting revenue which at the moment according to the deloitte report accounts for 49%.

Franchise – You’d have to have all of the figures in front of you, because you could flip that around and say gates could be relied on because the populairity of football countrywide is extremely high compared to in other countries, so if the clubs know that people will always turn out they will focus on the revenue streams they can gain from the matchday experience as opposed to sponsorship and other points.
There’s loads of different things, I think it was last year or the year before where SKY had to postpone their coverage of Real Madrid or Barca games because of contract disputes between the clubs and the broadcasters in Spain, since I think each club can agree their own terms with the areas TV stations ?!
Also about football being more popular here, clubs in the Championship and even 2nd Divisions can still be massive, like Leeds, I can’t name many of the Serie B clubs or the Spanish second division clubs, but then it’d be better to ask someone who lives in the actual countries.

Milan always get through to the last rounds of the champions league, they are nearly always near the top of Serie A and they negotiate their TV deal. That is forgetting to mention the huge sponsorship deal and all the shirts they sell.

Real Madrid are in chaos after Ramón Calderón bowed to pressure and announced that he had resigned as the club’s president after reports that he had rigged the recent general assembly came out.
Marca revealed that a number of non-members were at the meeting to vote through proposals and the scandal has now claimed the man at the top and others look set to follow.
Having denied the allegations earlier in the week, Calderón was cornered by photographic evidence of the vote rigging and put under pressure to go by his fellow directors.
On Thursday evening it was believed that he had told friends and associates that he would resign before reports emerged that he had changed his mind and would hold out to hold elections in the summer.
That is said to have infuriated some directors and many were considering resigning themselves at a board meeting on Friday morning unless Calderón himself told them that he was going.
Despite winning back-to-back league titles in his two full seasons at the helm, the 57-year-old’s tenure has been plagued by problems including the manner in which he won the presidency.
Postal votes were not counted and have not been so and that allied with his failed pre-election promises to sign Kakà and Cesc Fàbregas has angered some supporters.
A verbal attack on David Beckham was also not well taken after the England international’s decision to join the LA Galaxy and more recently Calderón has been exposed when a former club secretary revealed several embarrassing stories.
Elections at Real Madrid will be planned, but may not take place until after the end of the season with an interim leader, Vicente Boluda, the club’s vice president, being installed until then.
Calderón is due to hold a press conference explaining his decision to stand down at 18:00 CET.

Liverpool’s title bid could suffer further damage today as Rafa Benitez – just days after fanning the flames of the mind games with Sir Alex Ferguson – has reportedly rejected a new contract.
The former Valencia boss, 48, joined Liverpool in 2004 and guided them to the Champions League in his first season. He has also added an FA Cup to the club’s trophy cabinet, as well as a European Super Cup.
The form, results, and league standing of the club so far this season have given an indication that this could be their greatest chance of landing a league title since 1990.

I think we can all safely assume that we won’t be making a further increased offer for Arshavin.

Premier League club Manchester City have reportedly put a whopping offer of €120 million on the table to prise Milan star Kakà away from the Stadio San Siro.

Milan are on the verge of announcing the signing of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger on a permanent deal.
The 24-year-old stopper has been a long-time target of the Rossoneri and Sportmediaset claims a deal has been reached after Adriano Galliani met with the player’s agent, Per Steffensen, in Milan. Agger will sign a four year deal at that Stadio San Siro and the Italian giants will transfer €9 million into the Reds bank account.
There have been constant denials over the move but it seems that Milan have finally landed their man. The Rossoneri have been keen on strengthening at the back for some time. They have finally achieved it this week as Agger’s arrival follows that of Felipe Mattioni from Gremio.
The Danish international will be available to play for coach Carlo Ancelotti as soon as all the paperwork is signed, sealed and delivered. Agger’s contract with Liverpool was set to run until 2010. Irish – I was under the impression, that is what is happening, now that Gazadis has taken up his appointment and it kind of goes with a post I made yesterday, when I told of how a mate of mine was lucky enough to get invited to a corporate day with 1 of Arsenals key sponsors. Sky Sports News understands West Ham United have rejected Craig Bellamy’s request to leave the club in order to join Tottenham Hotspur.

Steve Bruce says Wigan Athletic have ‘virtually agreed’ a deal to sell Wilson Palacios to Tottenham Hotspur.
Wigan rejected a £10million offer from Spurs for Palacios prior to the club’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan told Sky Sports News that Spurs had been informed of their valuation of the midfielder, which is thought to be around £14million.
And Bruce has now confirmed that the Honduras international is likely to be on his way to White Hart Lane.
Bruce said: “The two clubs have virtually agreed a fee. It is how that fee should be paid.
“It is up to us as a selling club to demand what we want in terms of how we should be paid and how we should be structured. We will see what happens.

Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho has told Sky Sports News that he wants to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas.
Reports have linked the England international with a January move to the Italian champions and Mourinho has now confirmed his interest.
Jenas has made over 130 appearances for Spurs since moving to White Hart Lane from Newcastle United in the summer of 2005.
He signed a new contract with the Carling Cup holders in July last year which ties him to the club until 2013.

It’s hard to quanitfy, I think he’s consistent without much potential, you could get Denilson to build up that consistentcy while Diaby could do that and still has more ability.

I can’t see what effective ball retention Denilson brings. He is so negative that when someone presses him he will pass it backwards to a full back who is also under pressure, then the full back(Clichy) will just hoof up front to get rid of the ball. We will then drop back into our half.
Anything that requires some genuine technical class is beyond Denilson and when he gets time it’s another sideways pass.

The quality of players we have now is considerably poor than any squad we’ve had under Wenger, and probably 4-5 years before that. Even back then when we had a shit time in the leauge at least we had players who would die for the cause.

“Football has different types of people coming to the game. You have the client, who is the guy who pays one time to go to a big game and wants to be entertained. Then you have the spectator, who is the guy who comes to watch football. These two categories are between 40 and 60 [years old].
“Then you have two other categories. The first is the supporter of the club. He supports his club and goes to as many games as he can. Then you have the fan. The top PL passers last season were Clichy, Flamini, then Fabregas. In that order

So of course you match what your rivals are spending to a certain degree… becuase if it looks like they are going to over take you… you’ll lose out long term.

Thing with Wenger is, since the Invincibles he has always been two to three players short of really mounting a challenge, and given that we are probably in credit transfers wise, it is frustrating that we are where we are. If we could just have a blow out we would be awesome again.
If we had kept Hleb and Flamini and added Nasri, we would be top of the tree now, or at least close to it, and we would still be waiting for Eduardo and Rosicky to return.
I think Wenger does understand this now. He does seem to realise things if not a little slowly and his confusing comments about keeping fans today shows it. I am sure he has had the conversations with the board about the growing gaps in the stadium. I know some cant afford to go, but given our fan base, we should be able to fill the stadium still. It is just that the football this year has not been that enjoyable.
But he cant be complacent, and I hope he knows that. I’ld rather not have Upson as our main defensive target because he is imo too old. He is certainly a lot better than when he left but at 29 this would be his last long contract. He would be 33,34 at the end of any possible deal and if Wenger is still ere he will either give him a 1 year extention of ship him out again.
I’ld rather sell te deadwood and use that money to bring in a better defender in his mid 20s. Not an average defender nearing 30.

As for his natural position being CB-i dont buy into that either. He has always been a midfielder and Wenger is just trying to make him a defender. He played there well towards the end of last season but this season has been amazingly poor.
Against Fenerbache he was woeful. He played ther whole attack onside on numerous occasions, he is very slow but plays a high line, is slow (in the head) and has awful positioning. A god defender cant have all those deficiencies and be expected to play for a CL quality club.

Gambon, Ade was nowhere at 20/21. Nik is miles ahead of Ade at this age and maybe even RvP but im not too sure on that. Bendtner has most of the ingredients to become a legend. He is suprisingly quick, a smart passer, a good finisher, good positioning and a great leap. Unfortunately he is playing diabolically shit this season. But infairness he isnt the only one and he shouldnt be expected to be a world beater, either in this team or in any other team.

Kolo and Clichy are definitely among the best in the game. Clichy has lost faith in the rest of the defence. Last year, if he got the ball in our third, he’d pass his way out of trouble. Now he just boots the ball upfield. He is scared that if he passes to Silv or Almunia or JD, they will lose the ball. You can’t build a solid back four without trust.
I blame two things – Almunia (not a thing, Irish, I didn’t call Almunia a thing!), and not having a defensive coach.
Almunia does not talk with the back four. Mad Jens would demand his defenders listen to him, Almunia is a soft shy retiring type who is a brilliant shot stopper but can’t marshall his defence.
So our four defenders end up playing as individulas. Even Sagna now boots the ball out of touch whenever he is under pressure. He never did that last year before he got injured.
I remember reading Rob Hughes once saying that the difference between Seria A and the EPL was that in the Serie A, defenders passed their way out of trouble while in the EPL, they just booted the ball upfield. Just read about the Uzbek getting involved in the Arshavin discussions.
I am really pleased with this development. Finally, we have a businessman, worried about his investments in football, forcing the pace and forcing Mr. Wenger and the board to the negotaiting table. I don’t know whether any good will come out of it, but at least the Uzbek is being a good businessman.

Kelsey it’s sanitised TV, I watch because I’m an Arsenal nut and unlike Stuart Robson, I have actually paid to watch my club (30 consecutive years) They never say what we want them to say, they are like toads, you can see in Wenger’s eyes when he’s interviewed, it’s like he’s about to explode if he’s asked the wrong question.

I dont think Wenger doesnt spend just because he doesnt have the funds. I think he has a say in the transfer budget too.
IT firms in our area have gone to the extent of issuing an appeal to employees to save $10 per month in this difficult times. Because no one is sure wht is next. No one is sure about the jobs any more. And if city are relegated which is not entirely out of question, the same owner who shows such ruthlessness in buying players would not hesitate one bit for selling all the players and then selling the club.
City with Robinho and Kaka is a decent investment on the business front. If anything happens, the sale of these players (for whom there would be many takers) would get the owners most of their money back.

ethan – I’m with you on the idea that the board and wenger decided that they weren’t spending. The occasional sounds bites from members of the board about there being money were just a smoke screen. Arsene hoped that his young players would come good cos if they had we wouldn’t be moaning would we?
I would have agreed that young players bit, if he HAD bought the best, like Pato and Messi, but he didn’t, he bought Song and Denilson.
He has money, don’t believe he doesn’t, this is his experiment and he refuses to budge, I did hear that Fizman is getting fed up and wants Wenger to buy, which is the opposite of your argument!

Geoff – I agree that his choice of young players was not the best and that to me is one of the problems. If Song and Denilson were better that would help but they would still only be squad players if Flamini/Diarra/Gilberto had not been allowed to leave. The problem is three-headed 1. no money 2. bad choice of young players 3. letting much better players leave
