What makes Real Madrid a big club then???

by & filed under Uncategorized.

So Sagna came out and said Wenger could manage a great club like Real Madrid, that sort of comment makes me laugh, Real Madrid, a ‘big club’… says who?

I know that Arsene has come out and said he was going no-where but I thought I needed to shed some light on this ‘big club’ thing. So here goes.

What is the criteria for being a ‘big club’? The clubs in this category are who? ManU, Milan, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern maybe?

I would say the criteria is having a big ground with a large crowd capacity, Madrid tick those boxes, but remember, apart from the Barca game and the odd European night, they are rarely full.

What else then, the amount of trophies they win? Well, Spain is sort of third world and going through their history the trophies have been divided up mostly between them and Barcelona, a bit like Celtic and Rangers, my mother could manage Celtic and win the league, I mean Strachan does doesn’t he? What did he do in England apart from getting Southampton and Coventry relegated, he goes to Celtic and wins the lot, say no more.

So no great achievement there then Real, European cups? Yes, I think 6 times, now that’s what makes a club a ‘big club’ a European Cup, so how do they manage to do that, with an empty stadium in a third world country then?

Simple really, the one ingredient that all the big clubs that have won in Europe have, they spend a shit load of money, they attract the best players in the world and guess what if you add 2 and 2 it makes 4.

They or Barca or Milan never seem to have money problems though do they? They worked out that by winning trophies, the money takes care of itself.

So do you see where I’m going with this Grovers?

If Wenger went to Madrid he wouldn’t do well because he doesn’t like spending money, he likes to nurture kids, he wouldn’t last a year, or would he?

Perhaps his experiment is just for us, perhaps he realises that his experiment is doomed and that the only reason that ‘big clubs’ are successful is because… …wait for it… …they spend money!

Yes I know there are exceptions like Porto and Ajax, but they are hardly big clubs now and even a blind squirrel occasionally gets an acorn, we nearly did didn’t we?

So if you look at the big clubs that have won in Europe you’ll find throughout their history they have spent money, Liverpool, Juventus, Milan, ManU, Barca and Madrid.

The big difference between us and all the above us, is we fill our ground regularly but we spend nothing. The frustrating thing is we have the manager and if he spent some money, we would soon become a big club, just like Madrid, but the really frustrating thing is if he went there, we all know he’d start to spend their money in a nano second.

Finally all this Wenger to Real Madrid cobblers has been commented on by Sky sports token Spaniard ‘Guillem Balague’ that Fabregas may go with him, if he does indeed go, he said the speculation will intensify and as even the most ardent Arsenal fan will admit, the London club’s ability to compete on a domestic and European front will influence any decisions taken by Cesc regarding his future.

Well Cesc the reason we’ve won sod all is because the manager, the one that you may go to Madrid with, has refused to abandon his doomed experiment, perhaps you should have a word, because if he and you go to Spain hand in hand you may win nothing there as well.

I also realise that Barcelona have only won the Champions league twice, but they are still considered a ‘big club’ however we have never won it and we aren’t considered a ‘big club’ so maybe if we did win it then these rumours would go away, if we buy a few decent players we could win it and that is what’s so irritating, so Arsene, over to you, it’s not too late and before we lose Theo and Robin, go and take care of their contracts, you took care of Alexandre Song’s didn’t you.

Heres a question : If we do sign Upson and Platinis’ stupid 6+5 plan gets somehow passed, will Upson count as a homegrown player because he came through our system?

  2. bergkamp

upson didnt come through arsenals system,he should still qualify because he is at home the same place he grew

  3. Rtist

Obama is making sure the fucking psycho Repubs don’t derail his first term: most of the morons in the states would rather stick a knife in someone than see actual fucking progress..in answer to Pedro’s Quest for Fire.

  4. Stu

    Thanks Bergkamp.

JonJon, i think you have to ave a certain amount of players from your own system and then the others can be from any others teams system.

  5. JonJon

i dont know how it works stu, i was just taking a guess, but if your english id of thought it didnt matter

i see jackyboys got his crayons out and stayed between the lines on a new contract.

  6. bergkamp

JonJon they offered jack a new action man with a parachute and he didnt ask a question, no lambogini or wages, what a guy

  7. JonJon

    thats true bergy

if that rule came in we probably are the only team who arent effected, the majority of our team came trough our ranks,

  8. Stu

So Coquelin, Merida, Wilshere, Randall, Nordveit, Hoyte will do us fine by the time it kicks in, IF it does kick in.

  9. Stu

Even Bendtner, Simpson, Mannone count. Not Theo and Ramsey tho, which is unfortunate because they have a strong chance of being regulars in the future.

    What about Fabianski?

  10. bergkamp

well if your through the system and have been an arsenal player before pro contracts ,work permit or not your home grown, otherwise this rule is almost unfair to young players who could actually play for their countries but will come under pressure to choose england by their clubs an be david beckahms back up for the next 20 years

  11. JonJon

the more time that passes the more i want arshavin

i seen a you tube collation of all his games since the euros and i never realised how fast and skilful he was.

i knew he was good, but i thought the euros was a one off, the man does that kind of stuff every game in his own league, hes our answer on the wide if we get him.

  12. bergkamp

how comes fergie compares his kids to ours and only 2 of them played, its really hard for welbeck stuffing southampton with a 30 million pound strike partner and a ref as his winger

  13. JonJon

id of thought theo and ramsey qualify auto cos they are british

if your from britain and you play for a british side, your homegrown,

i think the 6-5 rule will only apply to foreigners .

  14. Stu

Completely agree JonJon, but would he do well in a pass, pass, pass style team? imo if we get him and he is to be used to the best of his ability we need to go back to counter attacking football. Thats the way Zenit play and Russia too.

  15. JonJon

    haha bergy

    too true,

it aint hard exactly to look good in a team thats full of 30mil pound buys playing next to you

any kid that comes through in manutds ranks are made to look better than what they are, take them players away, and play the kids all at the same time, like we do, and see how they do then fergie.

  16. Stu

My mistake. Theo would defo be eligible. But would Ransey? He isnt English, does it count for Welsh too? Surely not.

  17. bergkamp

i think welbeck is good, but who would pick welbeck over vela as a striker?? or theo as a striker? welbeck is just doin want bendtner did then stopped doing

  18. Stu

Skrtel. He is annoyingly good. I hate that the other teams do that and we never do.

Pool with Skrtel and Agger from nowhere. Mancs with Vidic and chavs with Ivanovic. We never get that lucky or buy that well with defenders.

  19. JonJon

i think if you are skillful enough youd make it in any team, arshavin is our next pires in the making, and we signed pires at arshavins age, give or take a year,

  20. bergkamp

i was a bit harsh on our players last night,i cant knock gael for effort, but id like 10% more from the rest of the squad, that would be the equivilent of getting an arsshaver, and each of them players has more that 10% in them, even mr song,10% must be in him, i think were about to turn a corner startin with bolton

  21. bergkamp

if only wengers scouts knew about centre backs, they just dont seem to tickle mr wengers fancy them no nonsense defenders, even phil was banned from the gym and given a ballet coach

  22. Stu

I heard off a friend that Wenger is considering making Van Persie the new vice captain ahead of Almunia. Please say its true. Almunia is an awful captain imo. But RvP is hardly a leader amongst men is he?

  23. Stu

lol Bergkamp. Thats defo a joke.

I wouldnt say its that the defenders dont scout good defenders. Wenger probably doesnt want a player unless they are athletic and all that shit. We need a leader who takes no shit and never gifts the strikers anything. Just get rid of it ffs.

  24. JonJon

    bergy,

i knew what was you trying to say last night,

i think it got abit out of control cos you were backed into a corner by more than one person and u ame out fighting, it made you sound more radical than what u are,

if people blogged with you regular theyd know what you were really like,

thats why i said last night i didnt think you were slagging off the players at all, you were just saying they should be playing better than what they are.

  25. bergkamp

wenger loves bad leaders, van is the next type, the wild one, weve had the sulk, then the cry baby, next will be the wild one,i think a few partys over vans house and we will be a team again

  26. bergkamp

lol JonJon the simple point i was making is that most of our faults seem to be easily cured ,practice to cross a ball,or communication in defence, four defenders and not one of them realise its a bad idea to defend on the halway line against agbonlahor,or on the edge of the six yard box against loan striker crouch, were full of mistakes but were not shyt, this is what i was saying,i dont really knock the players even NIKKY B,thats you an avenell, BUT i think concentration and practice would transform us,not into world beaters but we would have saved points in quite a few of the games we have tossed away

  27. Stu

Its too bloody cold out! I cant imagine how hard it would be for the players running around having to breath all that cold air.

  28. JonJon

yes the reserve game was called off

i know that mate, you help take the piss out of the boots and we have a laugh about players ages and stuff but when it comes down to the actual football iv never really heard you slag any player off

you say all the time even if we dont sign anyone, we have the answers in house,

sometimes people come on and once they get the management on they side (sorry geoff/pedro) they go straight for peoples throats over the slightest thing.

last night was and example of that.

pedro disagreed with you, then all of a sudden everyone else did. abit funny dont ya think.

it was like A today, now A’s comments arent the easiest to agree with because of the way he writes stuff, but he got on the wrong side of geoff and everyone went for him at the same time, A spent the next hour apologising to everyone and not just geoff.

i felt what he said to geoff needed an apology it waswrong what he said, but he dint say anything wrong to anyone else, he shouldnt have apologised to everyone else, its his opinion.

  29. bergkamp

lol so it was all arguments again this evening, this is a hard subject jonjon, pedro and geoff do a great job,i never completely disagree because they know what they are talking about and id like to think iv been about long enough to have good gut feelings about whats goin on ,but yeah i think were all addicts who havent seen it like this for over ten years, this is the main problem, but people do take the piss when they go absolutely overboard,il disagree,it can be taken as argument but its never that

  30. Stu

According to the mirror, Wenger is to renew his interest in Niko Krancjar. At 10m i’ld probably rather him that Arteta and Arshavin.

Lets hope thats true but again i’ld rather a winger than another right footed left sided player.

  31. JonJon

    night bergy

stu, krancjar is also a good player, but id rather have arshavin, if wenger can hold out til the end of jan for him without anyone else coming in we might get him for less than the 20 mil they want.

wengers worked wonders in the past, if he pulls something off now it will be special.

  32. Stu

I suppose so. But Zenit didnt budge in the summer on their asking price so its difficult to see them changing that now.

But even if he does make a late bid will he have the backing of the board? It seems doubtful.

  33. JonJon

the thing is stu, the board have had it easy with wenger, they automatically presume he will get us into europe every year, just like most of the fans do, without spending big.

but now other teams around us have spent millions and we are in danger of losing our 4th spot and losing thousands of fans in the process,

european qualifacation is essential for our long term financial plans,

the board will be reluctant to back him, the finances are not yet cemented 100%, if they dont want to take the chance of not qualifying they’ll have no choice but to back him, if we bought arshavin, it would cost us 20mil, but the chances are he’ll probably be enough to ensure we beat villa to 4th.

if we dont finish 4th we lose 35mil+ from CL revenue, so its a case of speculating to accumulate.

  34. Stu

I agree JJ. We need to spend money to earn money. I dont know why the oard dont realise this and if they do, ehy they arent acting on it.

I get the impression that Wenger is resigned to finishing in the Uefa Cup spot becuase of what he said of Milan and Bayern. But the difference between them and us is that it was just a blip for them and they spend lots and wisely to ensure that it didnt happen again. Somehow I cant see our board doing that.

If it is the board in fact not giving Wenger money then they are making him look very bad indeed.

  35. Stu

BBK, dont toy with our emotions. Please say you have proof!

Actually wasnt it you who also alleged that Wilshere signed for WHU.

  36. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

eboue will be gone by the end of the season, looks like toure’s off too so eboue will feel the need to do the same

  37. Stu

So Toure is off, Eboue is following too. Now all we need to do is tell Gallas and Silvestre to Fuck off out the same door.

    New defence on the agenda?
And then maybe a new keeper, new midfielders and a striker maybe? Easy as pie right!

  38. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

man city have offerd barca 24 mill for yaya so if that’s not an indication that kolo will be off there i don’t know what is

  39. JonJon

    hey bbk

how are you mate, pls dont play with us like that. lol

stu, the board have made wenger look bad for years, at the same time though, we have managed to fund our own stadium and this time next year will be the richest self financed club in the world

we cant have it both ways although the fans could have been treated a lil better, rather than the shit thats been coming out of every board members mouth recently.

trust me, it will all be worth it, the stadium was a long term fix, we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now. but we just need that extra player or two of immense quality to help us get there, and if anyone can find them, its wenger.

he just needs the board to back him 100% and not put any pressure on him with the ‘well you can spend it if you have to but try not to’ line

    we have to.

  40. Stu

I dont deny that Wenger has an eye for talent and can find great players but he has been buying them way too young. We need results now. Once a team slips out of the CL it can be very hard to get back in. We dont need to spend big just smartly.

Not on topic but what do you all say of Clint Dempsey? Personally im a big fan and wouldnt be unhappy with getting him (for a reasonable price tho) Anyone know his situation at fulham? Versatile and experienced.

  41. JonJon

BBK your giving me a stiffy.

although weve been linked to nzogbia now, who IMO is the left footed eboue, so we’ll get rid of one and sign the other and be no better off than what we were before. ;)

how did you find that out BBK??

  42. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

i know he scored twice against the chavs but the last time he scoed was about ?????????????id say

  43. JonJon

    clint dempsey????

nah stu id have bullard but when our current team is fully fit even bullard wouldnt get into the side, dempseys got no chance.

wenger does sign experience though if you think about it, he signed sagna, hleb, rosicky, eduardo, gallas, just to name a few over recent seasons, and we almost won the league last year

the only time he got it really wrong was in the summer, and everyones giving him stick for it now.

  44. Stu

He scores a good few a season. Just a suggestion so….dont get too worked up.

I just wish we would buy fron within the EPL. It would eliminate the settling in period. We are the only CL team that only buys from other countries. Granted the prices are a little higher but thats mostly for Engish lads. There are a few good players in other prem teams. Gallas and Silvestre dont count.

  45. Stu

But seriously tho we should be looking at other prem players, at least as good squad players. If we jst bought 1 player froma relegated team every few seasons that would be a cheap gamble. If it doesnt work out them it doesnt matter because it wouldnt cost much.

  46. JonJon

it’ll be all right stu, we arent all that bad, lets just get through this season and make sure we finish 4th.

times have been much much worse,

a signing here and there and next year we will be a force

remember last year, nobody thoght we had a chance after henry left, but we came as close as what we have in recent years, we just need our squad to stay fit and to add a few players here and there,

  47. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

as far as im concerned finishing 4th is beyond us at this point in the season,It looks like no one will be coming in but as usual a player or players will be on the way out if the board think that this tactic will make us finish 4th they have got another thing coming.

  48. Stu

I know its not as bad as we sometimes make out but the way the club is being run just isnt acceptable. One or two players just doesnt seem like enough atm. The standard of player at the club has dropped too dramatically in recent years.

I know its not fair to compare to the invincibles and other title winning sides we’ve had but that standard was set by Wenger himself and its up to him to keep to those standards.

  49. Stu

I actually wouldnt totally against Sendero returning. At least he would go some way towards solving our ariel problems. He can play along side any of our other CBs.

  50. JonJon

as soon as villa get a few injuries they’ll lose points everywhere, we’ll still lose points but i feel with the right line ups we have the potential to go on a run, it just depends on the players, and if they want it badly enough,

wengers not a shit manager, he honestly believes song and bendtner are good enough, he sees them in training all the time but they letting him down badly,

one thing is for sure is that wenger can be ruthless if he wants, if they piss him off ebough he will get rid of them but he cant at the minute because we are so short of options already.

i agree with the fact the fans havent been treated fairly recently, but we do have our own stadium stu, we cant have things both ways.

we have spent just as much money as chelsea and manutd in the past few seasons, it just hasnt been on the team.

the thing with the invincibles stu is that we had th henry and bergkamp pairing, these two players come along once every 50 years and we had them both in the same team at the same time, my only critisism of wenger then was that we should of won more than what we did with that team.

  51. Stu

But thats just it JJ. How many times this season have we had the right line ups. There is always players out of position. Never the best possible team from the players available.

  52. JonJon

the board have taken everything for granted, the fans the manager the stadium, the flats, in a way its all been planned wrong and we are seeing the effects of that planning this year.

somethings not right behind the scenes, that obvious with the changes thats been happaning, all the chopping and changing this season either means the clubs set for a financial windfall and they are fighting amongst themselves for the biggest slice, or things are not going as plan and they are bringing in the people to make it happen.

i personally believe that we are set for a financail windfall this year, and they are fighting for the slice, but until that happens, they are reluctant to spend in case the windfall doesnt happen on time. but we will be ok in the long term, thats for sure.

  53. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

well if they dont act noe, come the end of the season and we have finished 5th,6th or even 7th they will have one hel of a debt on there hands thats for sure

  54. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

failing to reach the champions league will fuck them up especially funds that will go towards paying for that life less stadium

  55. JonJon

agree stu, thats where wengers fucked up, this whole season has been a fuckup so far by wengers standards,

but one average season doesnt automatically make him a shit manager like some fans suggest,

yes hes made mistakes, but if you look at our team, we aint doing that bad, any other manager wouldnt eben get us into the top 10,

he’ll know this, he aint stupid, he will put it right, we just cant expect it to happen overnight.

im like you, when wenger says at the start of the season we will win the league, you expect them to walk the walk, and not perform like a side whos lying 5th in the table.

but we are where we are, theres nothing we can do bwt it

put it this way, this is probably the worst squad of wengers reign, but he’ll know this himself, he’ll put it right, i have no doubts about that.

hes a man of pride and consistency, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep that consistency.

  56. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

the team has been shit for 5 years now,The pinnacle of wengers reign was that 03-04 squad it will not get any better then that for us,Wenger’s time has run out if you ask me time for a new approach on and off the field

  57. JonJon

    BBK

me and stu said earlier that we have to speculate to accumulate, arshavin for example, could cost 20mil, but he’ll probably be the player we need to save our season and help us beat villa to 4th

it will cost us 20mil in the short term but in the long term it could guarantee us 35+mil in CL revenue. and whatever else he makes in shirt sales, lots of fans would get arshavin on their backs, you dont see anyone walking about with song eboue bendtner on their backs

the emirates needs a hero, a darling of the crowd that pleases them, we had so many over the years at highbury, they are a rare and dying breed now at the grove and the board seem to forget about the merchandising side of things, we even fucked up and got dry bummed with the sponserships

it makes you think the whole idea of the emirates was a great one but the way its been handled is by fools.

  58. JonJon

no other team in the PL is likely to match the invincinble team BBK

if you think like that then you might as well sack every manager in the PL cos none of them are likely to achieve it again.

that team was like i said a one off.

the team hasnt been shit the last 5 years,

we won the FA cup in 05 and got to the CL final in 06

we almost won the league last season

07 and this year have been the only time we underachieved, and this year aint even done with yet,

after everything wengers done for the club, he deserves time to turn it round

  59. BOY BETTER KNOW SHO!!!!

i agree jj,my view is that we won’t be seing arshavin on what has been said over the weekend let alone wether or not he will be able to adapt to the prem thats another story.Dont get me wrong i like the look of him but for me its 50-50 if he could help turn this team around im not so sure

  60. Pat

Former Arsenal star Alexander Hleb has admitted to being unsettled in Spain, hinting that he may want to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
    hleb

Hard going: Hleb (centre) cannot settle in Spain because he can’t speak the language

The 27-year-old Belarus international says he is not getting enough first team action, and revealed he is at odds with his manager over failing to learn Spanish more quickly.

‘Of course I would like to play more. But you should ask the manager why I’m not in the starting line-up most of the time,’ he said to the media in his native Belarus.

‘All I can do is to work hard and prove that I deserve it. Let’s wait until the end of the season.’

According to Hleb Barcelona boss Josep Guardiola has not said he is unhappy with Hleb’s performances on the field. ‘All he says is that I should start speaking the language as soon as possible,’ said the player.

Hleb told reporters that he found London too noisy and ‘tiring’ to live in but Barcelona is much more to his liking.

He said: ‘People in Barcelona are absolutely different. I like the city very much. It’s cosy and comfortable. I feel so much better living in it.’

AND Toure was supposedly seen “saying a tearful goodbye to the staff at the training ground “

  61. Rob From Aus

Oh i hope yuor wrong pat!!

Also our only signing of this transfer window is now complete!!!!

Jack wilshere has turned pro! so thats it for Arsenal!

    :(

  62. ethangunner

    AGAIN !!!

Arsenal run the risk of losing England star Theo Walcott for as little as £400,000 after dragging their feet over a new contract.

  63. iceman

    Arshavin / Upson / Parker ………

Looking likely people………well at least from what’s going around………..

  64. iceman

If that is true we could be back in people……

Upson and Parker know what it’s about which would only leave the Russian who would need time to settle…….

    Maybe AW’s finally woken up……….

  65. xeeez

although I wouldn’t mind keeping both, but I think its kinda impossible Wenger goes on with such a big SQUAD !

  66. iceman

Well we know Toure’s probably leaving………….. for now that’s all though…….no matter how bad you guys want Song/Eboue to follow……….just not gonna happen……….for now at least ;)

  67. xeeez

Iceman Eboue is leaving in the summer, he is going to do a flamini..not that I know of any offer on table for him :D

  68. gnarleygeorge9

Wenger won’t sign anyone till he has off loaded a few fringe dwellers.

& he hates to off load them, so I don’t expect any big action this January :(

Where is the spark inThe Club these days. I used to really look forward to Arsenal activity, but now its boring.

In fact its the most boring period in Th Clubs history for about 13 years. Ho Hum

  69. gnarleygeorge9

This excuse of economic downturn disuading the powers that be to sign top quality players is crap. How come other clubs are, clubs I consider further down the food chain, historically, than Arsenal.

  70. gnarleygeorge9

Mind you, someone in the medico/fitness department should seriously have a look @ themselves. The amount of injuries, & long term, are a joke.

  71. kelsey

    morning,
if we read through the respected tabloids we are linked more with who is leaving than actually coming in.Wenger is playing a dangerous gamble and I tell you for why.

he has made his intentions quite clear that he wants to off load bedntner on a part exchange for upson or whoever. That’s fine as bedtner just isn’t for us,but he is gambling that eduardo will recover fully physically and mentally and that could take 2 months at least.

eboue leaving on a free in the summer is no great lost.

kolo supposedly leaving now is a strange one unless we are getting a replacement and gallas will go in the summer

Walcott is an interesting one.maybe wenger is stalling because of his heredity ligament problem in both shoulders and we don’t want another rosicky.it is only my opinion,as theo will become a fine footballer but if there is a risk every time he falls over we have an issue as to his worth.hopefully the surgery will correct his problem but who knows.

  72. Geoff

I understand your concerns but I think getting stronger and older will sort the shoulder out, taking him off the wing may help as well.

I honestly think he will be one of the worlds best in time.

  73. gnarleygeorge9

    georgian

defoe is not that great. Any England team that has him & Heskey in it is average. Anyway spuds are trying to avoid relegation. How embarrassing is that :D

  74. gnarleygeorge9

Tottenham Hotspurs were talking top 4, & @ the hinge of the season they are 2 points from the bottom. Spurs are a joke around the world.

I know Georgian, & its frustrating, but it helps to dine out on Spuds. When spuds are down I like to kick them

47 years @ being shit, & to top it off they could/should spend the 48th down with the minnows. Aint life a bitch for the spuds fan :)

Any time I feel bad about the arsenal, I imagine what it would be like to be a spurs fan….lifts me straightaway!
