Troubling times ahead as key players fall away. Player Ratings + Review

by & filed under Uncategorized.

Before I begin, can I just say it was a pleasure to share a Peroni or two with so many people from the site yesterday (Gunner8, Raif, Steve, Odub, Bud, Geoff, Breton Gunner…)! My hangover is a testament to the enjoyment clearly had! I’d stick some pics up, but technical difficulties have prevented me doing so!

It’s a shame things weren’t so enjoyable in the stadium yesterday. Many people had their match day experience ruined yesterday by overly officious prat’s in orange macs. I was harassed by stewards all game for standing up… can I just apologise right now for ruining the match day experience of the pane of glass behind me… oh and the blinds.

Arsenal should wind back the CCTV of the game and check how many Liverpool fans were sitting down during the game. So Arsene, next time you complain about fan contribuition, take a look at what noise police are doing. They are the number one factor in decimating the match day atmosphere… funny how they backed off after your appeal for more noise at the spud game… arresting people for swearing at Howard Web… what a fucking liberty.

The first half was reasonably impressive from Arsenal. The teamed lined up pretty much the only way it could, a midfield of Nasri, Song, Cesc and Denilson. They all grafted in the first half and the opening didn’t take long. Nasri pinged a ball to RvP who controlled the ball with the grace of Thierry, shifted outside and rifled the ball home. A fantastic goal and another glimpse of the precocious talent he possesses.

Liverpool did manage to equalise in horrific fashion… Robbie Keane latched onto a Liverpool volleyed clearance… the ball bounced on the 18 yard box… Keane expertly buried the ball in the top corner. Lets not moan about the flukey finish, that is what he is paid £80k a week to do… lets instead focus on how professional defenders allow themselves to continuously fooled by high balls… lets ask why Almunia wasn’t on the edge of the box ready to claim the ball and take Keane with him… it really was poor on every level. I would be disappointed if my Sunday league team conceded a goal that soft.

Liverpool went close again a couple of times and then the moment we had all feared for sometime… Cesc went in hard on a 50:50 challenge with Alonso, and came out injured. Apparently it could be knee ligament damage, which is a real worry when you consider quite how bad Arsene’s plan B was… Here goes…

  1. Fab off
  2. Nasri moves to the right
  3. Diaby comes on and goes left
  4. Denilson sits in the middle

Yes, the whole midfield was shuffled around bar Song. Can I just ask what Diaby has to do to get a game in the middle of the park? May I also ask why we put players on the bench with a set position… then when it comes to the crunch, we are too afraid to use them? It’s pretty pointless being there if you have not intention of playing them, right? We’ve all seen what Rambo and co can do given the opportunity… why not give them a chance?

The second half opened and Arsenal’s tempo had diminished. Liverpool played some great football and we spent the opening ten minutes chasing shadows. Then Adebayor went into a challenge to shield the ball, he won it posession fairly… but Howard had other ideas… he blew up, gave a freekick to Liverpool and sent of Adebayor. What a joke…

The window pane and I were fuming. I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but do you think Arsenal football club did bad things to Howard at boarding school? I mean… he really does hate us doesn’t he? Who sends a player off for two pretty innocuous challenges like yesterdays? Adebayor is hardly renowned for dirty challenges is he? That sending off ruined the game for me… and serious questions need to be asked of Web.

If one good thing came of the sending off it was the galvanising affect it had on the crowd. They booed for all the right reasons and for a good twenty minutes… the siege mentality crept onto the pitch and the players upped their work rate. It didn’t really matter though… we didn’t have the right tools on the pitch to make an impact on the game. Liverpool went close a few more times and Almunia made a few crucial saves… and just to cap off a great afternoon… in the 91st minute, Arsene brought on Eboue.

A game changing decision if ever I did see one. Eboue was greeted by a chorus of over the top cheers… I don’t know what is worse, booing or just taking the piss?

The game went out with a whimper and Arsenal were probably pleased to have achieved a point.

Almunia: Made some top saves in the second half and pretty much kept us in it. I thought he could have done better for the first goal. He should have been on the edge of the box ready to claim that or at least head it away. He wimped out, stood rooted to his line… and you know the rest. 6

Clichy: This man is not enjoying his football this year. Playing with people you don’t trust can cause your game to fall away… and that is what is happening. He has gone from being one of the most consistent players in the country, to a being a touch erratic. Don’t get me wrong, he made some great interceptions and tackles… but you feel he is always on the edge of making a mistake. 6.5

JD: He’ll have nightmares over that long ball last night… Keane’s pace was too much for the Big Swiss defender last night and that doesn’t bode well for the Villa game. Other than the error, I thought he played ok. 6.5

Gallas: I thought he played pretty well again. I kind of get the impression he is just chugging along until he gets his move in January. It is quite hard to judge a player when you know he has been humiliated by the club and his heard might not be in it. 7

Sagna: I thought we had a pretty solid game out of the powerful Frenchman. If he was a car, he’d be a VW Golf… reliable, strong and not too fancy. 7

Nasri: He punched a peachy ball into RvP for the goal, but other than that he didn’t really do too much. His lack of pace is clear for all to see, and his ability to hold onto the ball is no where near that of Alex Hleb. He seems to have whatever Reyes had… I don’t think he enjoys being roughed up and I think he is having a difficult time adjusting to the rigours of the game. 6

Song: He had a great game after Adebayor was sent off… he upped his work rate and really pulled his weight for once. Prior to that, he didn’t do anything wrong… which is about all I can say about him? Whatever your opinion on him… the one thing you can’t say about him is he will be a revelation in his position. For me… that is what we need next to Cesc… high energy, aggression, pace and keen to run for the full ninety minutes. 6.5

Cesc: I thought he was having a tidy game until he was crunched. How ironic that for £2million, we may have prevented that injury in the summer! What Arsene does now is a mystery… surely he wont persevere with Diaby, Song, Denilson and Nasri…! Wenger’s dream line up… most Gooners nightmare! 7

RvP: Superb finish with his right foot and a pretty good performance over all. He lead the line well on his own after Ade was sent off and his finish in the first half was superb. Hopefully he can find some consistency in the second half of the season and really show us his worth to the team. 8

Adebayor: I was really impressed with the Togan in the first half. I thought his touch was great and his work rate was much improved. Others in the ground disagreed with me. No way did he deserve to be sent off… now we have to suffer losing him for the Villa game. 7

Subs:

Diaby: I can’t remember him doing anything of worth? Mind you… playing him out wide is like putting Almunia up front and expecting goals. How will he ever impress enough out wide, to get a chance in the middle? 4

Eboue: Woooooo hooooooo! 10

I’m pleased with the team performance. The players on show pulled of the best result possible. However, Liverpool are not title contenders… everyone in the ground knew they were there for the taking… and we cocked it up with some poor defending. This current squad are not good enough to sustain a challenge, now, minus Ade and Cesc… we look like we could be in real trouble against Villa.

Troubling times ahead.

Me too pat Mee too…i have a very bad feeling bout Cesc’s injury he did look like he was in a lot of pain…..

Also i think it will force Wenger’s hand in January….Maybe we can for once change our style of play and get speedy wingers and a CDM

  2. kelsey

Pat are you pat or the other Pat living in Swansea.

i posted yesterday that the tabloids and media over here want Wenger. at Real.Ramos has a contract until June and will only be extended if he wins la Liga or the CL

  3. kelsey

So the news today is that Ade is off,Bedntner is off,Gallas is off anyone i have forgotten.I read Cesc has trouble with the same knee again.more over training.

  4. JonJon

wenger wont go to another team after us no matter what happens

hes a legacy chaser, hes nearing retirement he wont have time to leave a legacy anywhere else

besides, he doesnt believe in spending more than you earn so that rules any other club out.

especially in spain, the the presidents are elected on things such as transfers, wenger wont do it

weve had him long enough to know what hes like, hes at his last club now regarding management anyway.

  5. leon

alot of arsenal fans may disagree but i think arsenal devnetly win against villa,if they can keep defending they have been and start finishing alot better they can win, since the chelsea game arsenal have defended alot better and song in my few has the quality he just needs up is effort level. when i look at the way arsenal are defending wright now i doudht wenger will buy defender unless gallas leaves, but i the will buy winger and maybe dm but no more 2 players, but in my few wenger needs winger more than anything else

  6. leon

    raif

i treuly believe arsenal are not better footballing side than arsenal they are just alot tougher and they defend alot better. arsenals strikers realy have not been good form this season, arsenal so far have scord the least goals out of the so called top 4 and we have conceded more than anyone else bar far

  7. ethangunner

    avenell

its a bit more difficult than just to state the strikers are up on numbers and blame the midfield !
ive been saying this since the off season …

the midfeild are supplying the strikers … thats the game plan , 1 in 8 chances the midfielder has a pop , the rest of the time the passing is directed (fed) to the strikers ..

if wingbacks are supplying crosses into the box for the strikers or the midfeild is feeding the ball to them , its a bit bloody hard for them to score also !

it worked more effectively last season , and the arsenal game plan hasnt changed ..
slick passing into the front men ..

the problem has been no clinical finishing … until RVP !!! thats finishing !!!
    ade AGAIN was woeful !

how anonymous does he have to be before people start seeing him as an 80k waste of space ?

i read bollocks like he gives us something different ?! FFS wot does that mean ?

yes i agree , we used to have class , talent and skill in TH14
ade definitely gives us something different

    class-less skill-less talent-less !

  8. leon

    avenell

i completly disagree if you at the stats out of so called top 4 arsenal have csord the least about goals bar far, and quite few games we have use bretnar and he is bar arsenals werst and most wasteful striker, its team effort and the whole team have not been good enough, yes i will concede that in midfield at times they have played badly but evon on bad day arsenal creat opportunities and you have to covert it. both ade and rvp are top quality players and you cant tell that they been in top form

  9. leon

    pat

that stat on the amount of goals conceded is what has been killing arsenal and that form could the team dare, and although are scoring goals with talent they have upfront they should be scoring alot more rvp and ade are top quality. arsenal do seam to defnding alot better and will need to keep it up

  10. London

Clutching at red and white straws

A funny thing happened to the team yesterday when Cesc went off; it was if the remaining midfield players went into a large phone box, span around really fast and came out wearing red and white superman capes; enabling them playing better than they have ever played before.
I have been walking around all day asking myself why, because, the most obvious answer that the dismissal of Adebayor galvanised the team into action just didn’t seem adequate – and then it hit me – the last time we witnessed such a surge of improvement from a group of players was after the departure of Thierry Henry. No longer did everything have to go through the great man; players could express themselves with out fear of the belittling effect of those Gallic eyebrows being raised to heaven. And so it was yesterday, the normally mild mannered, much maligned midfielders were released from the constraints of having to go through El Capitano and the change was tangible. Now read the headline.

  11. Stu

    Leon,

you are blatently ignoring the stats kindly provided by Pat. The stats clearly show that of the “top4″ arsenal are the 2nd top scorers so your argument holds no water…

  12. Stu

Also, to say that Ade is a very talented player is far from the truth. He doesnt have the ability to score a goal without the help of the midfield. Of his 30 goals last season the vast majority of them very made by our fantastic midfield doing all the work and Ade claims all the credit by finishing once in a while.

  13. avenell

    Here’s the midfield goal scorers…

    Denilson 2
    Song 0
    Walcott 1
    Fabregas 1
    Diaby 0
    Nasri 4

Pires used to knock in 15 on his own….

  14. Steve

Does anyone remember Adebayour’s last sending off – Carling Cup final 2007. Accused of punching a Chelsea player – complete fabrication. The referee was Howard Webb and his assistant Darren Cann. Some sort of agenda perhaps ?

  15. leon

    stu

you may not be ade biggest fan but you dont scoe 30 goals in one season by fuke, soory mate he may be very wasteful at times but when he is on song he is top quality player and quaite few of goals last season he created for himself plus he had great partnership with edardo

  16. Stu

Graham Poll is a fucking cunt. Saying its a big decision and sayying the ref was angry and saying that the ref sent off the England captain so its a big decision. SO THE FUCK WHAT!!! Being England captain has fuck all do do with anything he does for chelsea. Graham Poll only ever wants to be in the limelight. I fucking hate him so much!!!!!

  17. Metronome

That tackle was fucking atrocious to think that ade got the same punishment for one badish foul and one nothing foul

  18. Stu

    Choy,

wasnt it against the mancs a few years ago that everton went 2-1 up and i think united were down to 10men too. Well didnt everton crumble and united won 4-2.

or maybe it was chelsea and they won 3-2. Whoever it was, Everton still crumbled!!

  19. Stu

I think Poll mean that the ref was afriad of the backlash from the crowd if he didnt send Terry off. But Terry does get away with some horrible tackles.

  20. Rob From Aus

I just woke up to see Lionheart/wanker/crybabybitch Terry got sent off?!!

10 bucks says he has his red card recinded because he will cry lots at the judicary

  21. A

no stu poll was saying he had to make especially certain it should be a sending off because of the trouble he’d get in with the fa if it wasn’t. The fa are incredibly biased to english players, especially members of the england team, and even more so the england captain, like with terry now, and beckham before

  22. Stu

A, whatever he meant I still hate him. The best referees are the ones that go unnoticed but he just loved being in the limelight.

  23. A

yeah i agree stu, poll was a complete bellend as a ref, and very pro utd and anti us! Very glad he’s got the balls the say that refs are scared of the way the FA will react if they send off the likes of terry though

  24. Stu

Granted he is a good keeper, far better than ours but i think he gets a lot more credit than he deserves. Since his Hunt-ing accident he hasnt been as good.

That should have stood. Refs could never have seen that decision properly.

  25. A

cech has made alot of mistakes ever since his head injury, i’d have friedel or given over cech anyday, though he still does make good saves but over the course of a season they make less

  26. leon

    pat

yes amunia i think your wrongthere he has put him self on the line several times this season and i cant remember what game it was he had to taken off due to a head injury because he put his body body line and tried get the ball he kicked in the face

  27. Pat

leon, but do you remember WHY Almunia had to put his body on the line?? Because he failed to catch a simple shot and it slipped out of his hands.

  28. Rob From Aus

That Terry red card, he did the EXACT same challenge agaisnt us on Sagna and didnt get shit, its a shame they have to leave it that many games b4 they see that Terry is a dirty cunt

  29. choy

rob… i think you gotta act hurt a bit.. if you just get up like sagna did.. you ain’t getting any help from the refs…

  30. Stu

Doesnt a straight red card usually carry a 3 match suspension?? So shouldnt terry be out for their next 3 games. But seeing he is JT, england and chelsea captain it will probably be either recinded or shortened to 1 game. Being a crybaby he will know that tears are they was to get what you want.

  31. choy

nah… stu.. he already had his appeal earlier this season.. i think he is out for three games surely this time around…

i think teams would fancy their chances against ivanovic and alex!!!….

    lol rob.. hehehhe

  32. A

yeah pat but utd have been just as bad as everyone else recently too, that’s the point!

franchise if the keeper has the ball in his hands, under control, then it’s a foul, it doesn’t have to be close to his body at all he can be at full stretch. Irrelevant in this case though as it was rightly given offside.

Yeah that is a 3 match suspension for terry stu, should be extended as well but it wont!

  33. leon

    stu

in the summer i was calling for s he made some his head but quite frackly he played very well, yes some blunders but he has saved arsenal quite a few times but he is not the best keeper in prem far from it but i would keep him

  34. Pat

    JT misses the United game??

If we win against Villa and Wenger makes the right choices in January, we’re back in it. Teams are dropping tons of points this year and no one looks champion quality yet.

  35. A

no you can’t franchise, the wording of the rules is “under control” and cech had the ball still in 2 hands under control when it was kicked

  36. A

terry has been pants recently anyways, cost chelsea alot of goals with horrific mistakes. Hopefully it’ll affect them psychologically though and in terms of organisation and motivation etc

  37. leon

    rob

everone once to beat a team like arsenal ,and face it we didnot show up that day,yes there a bit over zerlous with some there tackles but thy did what they had to do

  38. Stu

    Leon,

Not really sure what you said but I certainly wouldnt keep Almunia because there are far better keepers out there. He just isnt good enough for a club like ours.

    Rob,

we cant beat stoke because Wenger is possibly the worst tactician in the prem. His way of dealing with their long throws was to play the talles team he could. Hardly a masterstroke in tactics. Whereas Fat Sam focuses on tactics a lot.

  39. Maciek

If Cesc is out for more than 3 matches, we are in serious trouble. I know that we can buy someone quality in January, but the quesion is if he improve us straight away. I’m really scared about our recent future. No CL football means no quality players in the summer.

  40. Franchise

Why do goalkeepers cradle the ball A when they are crowded by opposing players in their box? its cos that is the only situation where the are protected from other players intercepting the ball. The other thing they could do if standing up is to stretch their arms in front with the ball in both hands at chin level. Go find out A that wasnt a foul it was offside yes. Lets not argue endlessly and pointlessly about this one.

  41. Maciek

    Hi Stu,
I see Your patience with Wenger is running out, so I’ve got one quetion to You. Is tere any possibility that You will be demanding Wenger’s head?If yes, at what moment?

  42. Pat

We NEED to up our work rate for the rest of the season or we won’t be in the top 4. Without Cesc, Wilshere HAS to play. We won’t have ANY creativity out there. Nasri seems to only perform well against top 4 sides for now.

    From:
    Pires Gilberto Vieira Ljungberg

    To:
    Rosicky Flamini Cesc Hleb

    To:(for Villa)
    Denilson Song Nasri Eboue

    Possibly to:
    Gibbs Coquelin Merida Wilshere

    Jesus

Although I really like Coquelin. Out of all our youngsters, Ramsey, Wilshere, SImpson, and Coquelin have impressed me the most.

Giggs told the Wales manager to build his team around Ramsey. Everyone sees this kids talent except for Wenger. If you love your kids so much, PLAY THEM!

  43. choy

ARShavin and ARSenal…. isn’t it destiny?

ok.. i can dream.. what the hell is he going to do at tottenham anyway.. do they even have a training ground?

  44. leon

    maciek

i would agree with you if cesc had been in top form but he has been very lackluster ,the fact is fab leads buy doing he is not showter and he realy has not been playing that well, infact at times song and delinson have been playing better than him,the fact is the whole team have not playing well as a team plus diaby and delinson have playing out of position and the fact the team are lacking wingers does not help

  45. Rob From Aus

alrighty Lads off to work for 30 min! & Choy Arshavin isnt 8yrs old….. So w cant forget that. Howeveri have a plan, im gonna send AW a French passport for Arshavin! We will have him 4 sure!

  46. hitman

This season is poor in terms of quality. There are no good teams. Reminds me of the early 1980′s. Aston Villa, Ipswich, even Man Utd were competing for the title.

Unfortunately our lack of spending in the last 4 years means we dont have quality to take advantage.
Wenger needs topull some rabbits out of the hat in January sale. At least we are the only team with money to spend. Will Wnger Spend though! A couple of £6-8m tough tacklers will do me.

  47. A

blackburn got completely outplayed by stoke at the start but they got goals against the run of play. They got lucky and are in the honeymoon period. Don’t let the scoreline deceive you, blackburn were comfortably outplayed by stoke, who had more possession and chances. In a few weeks they’d lose to stoke, although that doesn’t mean anything because it’s just because blackburn are crap!

We don’t have the players to fight, and didn’t have the confidence or momentum to outfootball them at the time, they just kicked the crap out of us, whereas other teams are scrappers and foulers too

  48. Pat

At first, I didn’t want Arshavin. He has improved from last season, a lot. He actually looks much more impressive in the Russian league now than he did before the Euros. He’s a late bloomer.

I’d take him since Rosicky has a never-ending injury.

  49. A

pat ramsey isn’t good enough to start for us yet. He will be a great talent, and could come into a team flying playing well with confidence, but not a team stuttering, it’d kill his confidence and he’d be useless. The same with wilshere and merida

  50. Maciek

    Leon,
I respect Your opinion, and I tend to agree on Cesc’s form, but who should we played at his position?Ramsey is quality but he is 18, Denislon- I don’t know, Diaby isn’t an option. In ideal world Nasri could play here, but then who would play as winger? So, You can see that we need a winger and a cdm.

  51. leon

    pat

wenger has always very protective of his players he would rather gradualy bring them rather throw in the deep end. i would play ramsey because he is very phsycal player so can handle it, but wintshire i think needs a bit more time, couquin i have seen several times i agree he looks the real deal against reserves but aginst the likes top players in prem that a completely different thing, and what we have all seen with the young we have confedence is big them for them,i think if they have realy bad game it might knock them for six and puts there progress wright back

  52. Stu

Of the players available I would go for Merida to replace Cesc, but only is Wenger doesnt buy someone to fill in. Merida is the older than Ramsey but has never been given a proper chance until this season and even now he is neing played at left wing.

Merida is a quality CM, so much so that he was voted as a star for the future or something like that after the u-18 or u-19 WC last summer. He needs to get more chances and now is the time because Cesc is out!!!

  53. Maciek

Well Stu, I can see that You are criticizing a lot of his decisions and choices, so I think that it’s only a matter of time when You will be demanding his sacking and his head. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want to be abusive or rude. It was just my guess. But maybe I was wrong.

  54. choy

nah.. he’ll just stick with denilson there in the middle.. we all know that …

    its going to be…

    eboue denilson song nasri…

and if nasri gets injured.. we have diaby in there..

    isn’t that a priceless midfield?

  55. JonJon

    hey guys back again,

JTs a dirty bastard and if he gets that card rescended someones bumming someone at the FA

everton were unlucky, piennar looked bordering and ballack took it out of cechs hands, it was an OG.

on another day that might of been given

wenger needs to pull a finger or two out and sort this team in out jan, he does that and we still got a chance

  56. leon

    maciek

age has nothing to with it he can clearly handle the presure, he can evon play in dm position, but i would try diaby is very powerful and hold ball up and great dribler but because there are wingers he plays him on the left

  57. JonJon

we saw the effect cesc not being in the middle against fulham citeh and porto,

poor form or not he gives that middle a certain presence, without him we are fucked. Up the bum. Hard. Dry!!!!!

  58. avenell

They took the 2 ade decisions out of context..
On there own they looked bad.. compared to the dippers they were not as bad as there’s….
