… until I started writing the report. I initially thought the performance was pretty garbage. If you took away our 3 goals, you’d probably be less than impressed with what you saw… but then, as I started writing up what had happened, I realised that actually… we really pulled something special off today.
We’ve got 5 first team players out injured, we’ve been playing poorly of late, we’ve just lost our captain, players have been taking pops at each other… plus rival managers! Like Jamie Redknapp said… we were there for the taking today… and we showed a lot of character by not allowing that to happen.
For me, today was an extremely satisfactory result. Arsenal didn’t really excel… our passing wasn’t brilliant and we looked a bit stuffed for creativity at times but how can you argue with an away victory at the Bridge?
When the team sheets when up… I was staggered by the quality Chelsea have at their disposal. Anelka, Lampard, Deco, Terry… the list is endless and the fear I felt looking at that list is the sort of fear Chav fans used to have when they looked at our line up.
Our team sheet contained Song and an out of position Denilson. It was a bit of a make shift line up, but I wasn’t concerned. Song usually plays ok when he starts and he is quite diciplined when it comes to holding his position. Denilson is a useful player… he’ll never blow you away, but he is mobile and he has the eye for a good pass. Both performed admirably today. Denilson was a stand out performer in the second half and Song did his bit. I am still concerned how slow he is, but I’ll talk in more detail in the players reviews.
The first half was pretty poor from an Arsenal perspective. We spent a majority of the half chasing blue shadows but for the most part, we contained them and kept our discipline. Chelsea were pinging the ball round delightfully, but they didn’t have an end product and they seemed to lack creativity… which is like Picasso lacking ideas to put down on canvass, or David pleat running out of stupid things to say… When you have tools like Chelsea do, creativity shouldn’t be an issue. I mean seriously, I can’t remember seeing Deco do anything all game?
First blood went to Chelsea though… and it was courtesy of a JD own goal. Almunia was completly at fault. He gained control of the ball, and instead of taking his time and leathering the ball down the other end… he inexplicably rolled it out to Nasri… who clearly didn’t expect to receive the ball… he lost it… Chelesa laid it off to Bosingwa, who slotted a hopeful ball into the 6 yard danger area… JD made a decision to defend the cross and accidentally played it into his own net.
Mistakes like that cost you titles and for me, Almunia seems to making mistakes all too frequently. He has been consistent for a year… and now he is not. Wenger dropped Jens for making mistakes and put an uncapped Spaniard in to replace him… surely he has to follow precedent and drop Almunia?
We went in at half time and there were many worried Gooners… not least, the fans who had made the trip (You were singing your hearts out and you put the Chavs to shame!). My biggest gripe was the lack of spark. I remember a point in the 2nd half when Denilson just smashed a hopeful long ball forward with no one on the end… at that point, I did wonder where the creativity for a goal was going come from.
It didn’t take long… Van Persie was played in superbly by Denilson, and even though he was clearly offside, he played to the whistle and buried the ball into the top corner. RvP celebrated with parade of high fives for the away supporters… that goal meant the world to him, and as a fan, I appreciated that passion. He may have been offside when the ball was played, but the Chav players didn’t really protest did they? How many times are we on the receiving end of such decisions?
Chelsea looked shell shocked and Arsenal had tasted blood. There was only one satisfactory outcome from today, and that was victory. Not long after the first goal, RvP latched onto a cushioned header from Ade and without looking up, he expertly powered the ball back accross goal under the flailing hand of Cech. We were winning at the fortress that is/was Stamford bridge… it felt great, but we’d been here too many time before to get excited… could we learn from our mistakes? Could we show that we are improving?
Emphatically yes. The boys defended the only way they knew how to… with attacking flair. We desperately chased a third and came close on a few occassions. Chelsea only seemed to have one tactic… fire it into Anelka so he could lay it back to an awaiting midfielder to have a pop… today that tactic didn’t work. The back 4 were excellent and they put in a really solid performance. Keeping Chelsea’s millionaires quiet is no easy feat and I don’t think enough credit was given by the Sky pundits after the game.
We managed to hold out for the win, and every gooner went home with a smile on their face.
This doesn’t mean our problems have been addressed, it doesn’t mean that our squad is good enough and I don’t believe it signals a title bid revival but it does mean that the boys are capable when they can be arsed and it does mean that with the right surgery in January… we could really dominate football in years to come.
Player Ratings:
Almunia: A very poor performance from the Spaniard today. He punched comically early in the game and his mistake was unforgivable at the level he is playing at… I would drop him for a couple of games if I was the coach… after all, if you can drop a keeper as good as Jens… why not Almunia? 4
Clichy: Made a few dodgy clearances in the first half, but after recovering from them… he kicked on and had a super game. He went on a magical run later in the second half but was cynically pulled down by Ivanowhateverhisnameis… which was a shame, because one day he’ll score from one of those runs. He made some great interceptions and played his part in the game well. 7
Gallas: I thought the ex-captain had a great game today. He played in the manner we’d expect a £90k a week defender to play. He looks somewhat relieved to be out of lime light, and his performances will hopefully pick up now he is focused purely on his game. I really hope we keep him in January, because he is a great player. 8
JD: I really felt for him when he turned the ball into his own net… he looked gutted. He didn’t let it get to him though, he put in the type of performance all Gooners were praying for… he really does seem like the solution at the back. WG likes playing with him, and Arsenal fans feel secure with him in the back line. 8
Sagna: A crunching performance from our scary as hell right back. He made some brilliant tackles today and he looked quite threatening going forward. I’m hoping that his form has recovered and we are going to have a good December out of him. 8
Nasri: Quietly effiencient without ever standing out. He helps our game flow, but when he is quiet… you hardly notice him. He is a slow player, so I guess if he wants to succeed at Arsenal he is going to have to find a way of being productive without pace… a tough ask in the Prem, but Cesc turned out ok, didn’t he? 6
Denilson: Considering he was being played out of position, I would say he had a great game. He covered a lot of ground today and he was excellent in the second half. He is never going to blow your mind out wide, but when a player is called upon to take one for the team, and they do it well… you have to give them credit. 8
Cesc: A proper captains performance out there today… he is clearly enjoying his new found responsibility and it showed in his performance… the desire is back and he is pulling the strings again. It’s great to see, and long may the winning streak continue. 8
Song: He played ok today, and just ok… it’s a sign supporter faith that when a weak footballer plays just ok, people say they’ve had a blinder. I think his player tracking is poor and his passing is quite often less than desirable… but he is the best option we have at the moment and I personally believe it would be unfair to expect Rambo or Wilshere to make the jump too soon… He was however, part of a winning team at Stamford bridge, an achievement not to be sniffed at in my opinion. He ain’t no Paddy, but if he can get the basics right, I can deal with him until we have a better option. 6.5
Adebayor: Love or hate him, don’t under rate him (<-It rhymed as I wrote it… I apologise). Ade was the big difference for us today. He is powerful, gangly and a real nasty piece of work to play against. I thought his touch was on today and I thought his work rate was superb. Having Ade in the team gives everyone a lift and it worries the opposition. JT clearly doesn’t enjoy playing against him and anything that upsets that scumbag is ok in my eyes. Good to have you back Ade, oh and nice assist! 7.5
RvP: I still can’t work out what his game is all about… he is a bit of everything… he drops deep, he hangs off the last defender, he shoots, he creates and today he scored two vital goals! I am hoping those two goals will see him head into a purple patch… he is a confidence player; now a fit player and I expect big things from him. He loves Arsenal; although he doesn’t always express that in the correct way… Arsenal is in his heart and I love that. In his post match press conference he was asked what the goals meant to him…
‘This goals weren’t for me… they were for the team.’
I love to hear players say stuff like that and I loved seeing a player as talented as RvP on the score sheet! 9
Arsene Wenger: Ok, one of the Grovers (London) suggested I give the manager a rating. Well, here goes! I thought Arsene played a blinder today. He picked the best team he could considering the injury situation and he out thought Scolari. Arsenal soaked up the early pressure and JD certainly dealt with Anelka and the high balls well. I also thought he did well with the subs. He knew that Chelsea couldn’t fully attack us while we were playing 4-4-2… Usually he would bring on a DM and invite the opposition on, but today he threw Nik on for the tiring Ade and we maintained our attacking prowess. Listen to his thoughts here. 9
Conclusion
We saw out the victory in impressive style and we have a lot to be pleased about. I don’t know why Chavski fans are talking about bad luck… we scored all the goals today, and as for the offside goal…. well, these things happen in football.
So… we head into December after a very odd month. Wins against ManU and Chelsea we slightly tainted by the losses against Vila and Man City. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions this months. Some sections of the fan base may have mixed feelings on the result because victory will only firm up Wenger’s belief that this squad is good enough to challenge for honours. In your heart of hearts, do you believe we will ever win the league with Song in the heart of midfield… I have my doubts… but I am not sure Wenger would agree.
Arsenal find themselves 7 points off the pace and we’ve still got 4 competitions to play for. So enjoy today… make sure you bust out your best victory dance moves in the faces of every Chav fan you know… then look forward to the kids showing up Burnley on Tueday.
Before I go, I would like to draw attention to the England captain and his poor behaviour today. That two footed lunge was disgraceful and you could see the spite in his face when he did it. There is no room in football for behaviour like that and it is especially disappointing that a player with such a big reputation lowers himself to disgusting acts like that…. but who cares, Sags is ok… and Chelsea are in a bit of a situation, ho hum…
Have a merry Monday Grovers… must dash, I’ve just seen a chav scuttle into the kitchen!
P.S. The amount of Plastic AKB’s we’ve had on in the last 12 hours is amazing (It’s always the same names…). Where have you guys been for the last month? We haven’t seen you? Do you only support Arsene when he is winning? When the coach needed you the most, you weren’t there for him! Win, lose or draw… the Grovers are all here talking things over, it’s a shame your support isn’t unconditional. Tut tut…

Jaoquin is probably the best example of a “proper” winger at a high profile club these days.
Yeah i agree. Whatever happened to him? As a teenager I was blown away by him, thought he was going to be one of the top players in the world, but seemingly never reached those heights. Did he have personal problems or something along those lines?!
actually, i’d call riera a traditional winger, pennant too though obviously he’s a long way from being a regular! malouda too though probably not a regular if chelsea have no injuries!
He is getting back to his best now but he is fast approaching the magic 30 mark too. I think it was his move from Betis to Valencia. He didnt really play that much for them and the new coaches didnt seem to like him. I think there might have been an attitude problem or something like that.
Is there any point having a traditional winger when most of our team are shit in the air?
Bendtner isnt that bad, nor is Ade and RvP is pretty tall. Plus Eduardo is a good eaderer but he isnt big tho. So there is a point but all crosses dont have to be to a strikers head. Cut backs and low-crosses can be just as effective.
With wingers its not just about crosses, its beating your man,
when you think about it, we struggle against teams who park the bus cos we cant pass through them. we have a team full of passers and when teams pack the midfield we cant get through them.
we need a plan B
if we had a winger who could provide natural width and not cut inside every two minutes, then we could go around the 5 man midfield instead of trying to go through it everytime, it gives us that extra option when we truggle to break teams down.
there isn’t any point in us having traditional wingers because it would completely bugger our style of play, just having theo in does it to an extent! We actually now have very good headerers up front, VP is massively underrated in the air, bendtner and adebayor are quality, and eduardo is actually good in the air!
anyone else excited about tomorrow?! Got a bit of a bad feeling though, going away will be very different for the kids, could be much tighter than past games. Still think with Ramsey, Wilshere, Merida, Bendtner and Vela we should have enough goals in us!
We dont necesarily need a traditional winger, more of a tricky winger.
downings your traditional winger, overmars and pires were tricky wingers,
we dont really have anybody who can dribble, hleb was brilliant but he had no end product
Ade was bought as our plan B, so we could play a more longball direct game, but vp being out for so long meant that he became part of our plan A! In tight games it’ll always come down to someone producing a big of magic, or knicking a goal, I don’t think wingers are any more likely to do that than playmaker types
Plan A pass
Plan B Long ball
Plan C dribbling wingers
Its all part of the amory, the more plans you have the more games you’ll win.
i wouldn’t say pires and overmars were the same. Both could beat a man, but overmars was more direct, like theo, and pires was more of a playmaker, like nasri. Hleb didn’t not have end product, he was one of the best in europe last year and our biggest loss this year! Hopefully nasri will develop and settle in quickly, and rosicky will return from injury sooner rather than later, along with wilshere coming through and theo coming back a bit later!
Our whole midfield is full of passing playmakers, they just cancel eachother out, they all look to pass and be patient, theres no real direct play to it that a dribbler provides
a dribbler provides space for the others he takes 2/3 defenders out of the game with one go, leaving yards of space for the others, thats why rosicky cesc and hleb did so well last year, hleb took the defence on and created room for rosicky and cesc to work their magic, we dont have anyone like that.
cesc hasnt been effective this year as he has no runners, he has no space to play with.
we need a fast player like walcott, but who can dribble like hleb, its just finding him.
Graham Poll the twat is saying that Ronaldo shouldnt have been sent off and everyone is disagreeing with him. Pool apparently also heard the “ghost whistle”.
Pires and overmars were both tricky, diferent stlyes but both tricky, they both could go past 1, 2 3 defenders, just like hleb, theo and nasri dont do that, and thats what we miss
Ball retention is also vital. Rosicky, Hleb and even Flamini to an extent were great at keeping the ball. But Theo usually runs down dead ends or leaves the ball behind him and Nasri just isnt at the same level as his predecessors were. It will take time for him to develope to their standards but that is time that we dont have if we are to be successful in the short run.
yeah i agree jonjon, if we still had hleb we’d be walking the league this year, but i also think nasri was brought in to replace him. Nasri has shown glimpses that he has the ability though, he’s a fantastic dribbler, but it’ll just take him a while to settle down and adapt to the premiership so he can do it consistently, as it would anyone from outside the prem. It’ll come though! And wilshere will do the same when he’s ready, though that might not be for over a year
Yeah i agree completely stu (apart from regarding flam, den is better in that respect imo), and that’s been a big difference compared to last year. Theo because of his direct nature has resulted in our incredible ball retention from last year just not happening. Even when we had diaby in on one flank with hleb on the other we still kept the ball very well, just because of the nature of diaby and his style of play. Nasri isn’t anything like the level of hleb in that respect, though should hopefully get to it once he’s settled, he has bags of ability, and rosicky being back will help him out massively too
thats it Stu…….
cesc is the only one of our midfield thats been playing his natural position
Denilson is not a DM, he is asked to play one,
Walcot is a striker, asked to play wing
Nasri is a central attacking mid, asked to play wing
we have three players all in the midfield learning new positions all at the same time and we wonder why we are being inconsistent.
last year we had the perfect midfield until tomas got injured,
hleb, dribbler
tomas and cesc, creative players
flamini, the engine
they all complemented eachother and it all worked. it was balanced
this season we have three central creative mids and a striker playing midfield, theres no balance.
to be fair, denilson has been a defensive midfielder all his career, it’s a myth that isn’t his position.
Theo doesn’t really have a position, but till become a striker but needs to play as a winger to develop certain attributes, just like thierry did.
Nasri “proper” position is one that very rarely happens in english football, and we would never play regularly. He’s playing pretty much in his position, free role wide playmaker with free reign to play centrally. Hleb, Rosicky, and Pires are all identical in that respect, I wouldn’t say he’s having to learn a new position, it’s just a case of adapting to the prem, and I’d imagine it won’t be until after next xmas that we really see the best of him, as with hleb and pires
Rosicky started less than half the games last year, so i wouldn’t say he was fundamental to us being close to winning the title, though obviously very useful in those 15 matches, as he will be this year!
Completely agree A,
when i watch nasri play though hes dangerous in the center when he has space, hes better in the center,
although tomas didnt play all season, when he did play our midfield was fantastic, we were flying, then he and eddie got injured and it went tits up.
walcotts a finisher, his pace makes him dangerous when he plays off the last man, although walcott is playing wing and being inconsistent, wenger will move him up top and he’ll be awesome, like you say A he’ll have developed a wing game too, with abit of experience and a few years under his belt hes going to be a legend.
Yeah i agree, he does alot of nice things out wide, but because of where he does them they have little impact. He just needs to learn our pretty unique system and become more active centrally, cesc even said something along those lines in the villa program notes.
People underestimate rosicky’s influence too, if he comes back around start of jan, we could start destroying everyone before us, and we’d also see much more of nasri as it’d take alot of pressure off him.
Agree about theo too, in a couple of years with theo, vela, and bendtner having that much more playing and development time under their belts we could have incredible possibilities up front, along with nasri, wilshere and ramsey, and cesc still around hopefully!
Keyser
You need a decent engine and ability to pass from A to B. It’s not hard.
Agree A, in a few years time we have the players to be potentially great, its just holding on to them and picking up afew trophies along the way.
football is afterall a results business, and the best result is to have abit of silverware here and there.
The win against Chelsea felt good, although I’m a cynical bastard and I want to see the performance against Wigan first then take it from there. We beat the European and Premiership champions a little while ago and since then we’ve stripped Gallas of his captaincy and lost two games on the spin (one at home too).
Don’t get me wrong, I went mental when RVP scored the second goal, but after the game I didn’t feel the same elation I’d have felt a few seasons ago from beating Chelsea. Ultimately the game is played by humans and you can’t win them all. This won’t mean we’ll win the Premiership and I understand that it’s not our right to win but why have we declined so much?
I already know that much has been said of this, but I feel I need to bring it up again in the midst of the euphoria. Denilson is an alright player…not our winger though. Why don’t we have adequate cover i.e. a fucking proper winger/attacking wide man to deputise for Walcott? Instead we have Eboue (a RB who’s not quite as good as Bac) and…Denilson? Fuck’s sake…we need to sort it out. I’m not happy about being 7 points behind…it’s different now, we’re not just competing with Man Utd anymore…there’s Liverpool, Chelsea and now Villa are having ago and Man City want some too…
We need to keep up with them and start getting in some quality…
I’m sick of hearing ‘in 3 years we’re going to dominate’….how long have we been saying that for?
I know what you guys think of the AKB crew…and to some extent I agree – he’s a stubborn bastard. But at the same time I do admire and love Wenger too…so, I’ll always have a soft spot for him even when he does fuck up…but there is a threshold and I don’t know about you, but I want some bona fide world class players coming in in January and next summer and I want to see an Arsenal team take the Premiership by the balls and start fucking competing…has it only just dawned on these over paid, upstart show ponies that the level of commitment showed at Chelsea has to be shown at every game? Well, it’s about time isn’t it because every Arsenal fan (with a brain) already knows that, so you’d think professional footballers who spend most of their time doing what they’ve been doing since they were little kids would know that too.
Wenger is realistically the only man for the job at Arsenal, not because I’m an AKB moron but because who the hell are we going to get? This is Wenger’s mess and he has to clear it up.
Re Franchise December 1 9.36 am
With respect to the disallowed RVP11 goal @ Highbury against Chelski 2005/06
I remember that moment. You are right, the goal should have stood, & things went pearshaped after that. But after the game very little was said about that incident, & it pissed me off @ the time
But what goes round comes around, & as much as that in a way signalled a shift in the balance of power between both clubs, this recent result has showed that the balance of power could be shifting back to North London. Ha Ha Ha!!!
…..& also what happened to Gerrard, how come he didn’t get a late penalty by cheating in the box. Double Ha Ha Ha!!
……Arsene you must be totally prepared for this weekend. Arsenal must win. Leave nothing to chance coz lets be sure on one thing. The Goons are back in the mix. Chamone to that!
Normally I hate watching Chelski TV but this morning when they had the replay of the 1-2 win (to us). Fuck it was good. Patronising idiots got both barrels, & I loved it
WOW

its been a strange old season so far , no one at the moment should sledge another team
as the league is at a point where anyone on the day can come away with a win …
and i think thats what it spells out as an over all message currently in the EPL ..
and another message mainly for arsenal is always size up your weaker opponents
dont underestimate them , and field a weaker side ..
have a game plan !and play to your strengths and not there weaknesses !
pool fucked up last nite

Hey rico…….
Yeah Yaya fits the jigsaw…..hopefully there’s something to it……….

http://le-grove.co.uk/2008/07/20/mandingo-transfer-exclusive-photos-from-the-game/
Mornin’ Grovers.
Just as an aside – Can anyone tell me why ANR, which i believe is suppsed to stand for Arsenal News Review, does it have a headline “Wayne Rooney Is A National Treasure”???? WTF and who gives a fuck about that bindipping, granny shagging fucking retard and more to the point and unless i’m totally mistaken, he has NOTHING to do with Arsenal, Fuck Off Myles Palmer, change your site’s name to Football News Review, how dare you soil opur club’s great name with that fucking classless neanderthal………
Cor that’s batter.
Mandingo Aloisus Dkembe Dkembe
LOL ddm……….
I think my knackers have just dropped off
Dennis – why don’t you send your comments to the dipstick Myles?
Wotcha iceman……..
Do you know what, i think i will
ddm he writes about anything that crosses his mind, like some crusty old gig he went to in the sixties, or his kids, or any game he watches, or the weather… the blog’s title is a bit misleading at times! He does seem to have a strange fetish for Rooney, but I can’t work that headline out considering how average his goal was on Sunday.
I’m gonna be honest I do appreciate his style of writing and sometimes (note *sometimes) he is right about stuff but he does have a tendency to wander off and talk about I don’t know how he enjoyed his evening with a bottle of wine and some jazz. Who the f**k cares!!!!!
It’s called Arsenal News Review and he’s on about wine and jazz and the occasional article about Shrek being the national treasure.
And also, correct me if I’m wrong, he’s a chav isn’t he?
He wet himself over the fact that the fucking troll really celebrated his goal, whoopiedoo, what an arsewipe………..
A Chav!!???? A fecking Chav
Dennis – good show, he won’t answer he never answers mine.
Like the the Racing Post – Tony Cascarino called AW Foolish and out of control so I wrote to the editor of the Post and slaughtered Cascarino. I stated that cascarino did not have the courage to go into football management but ia able to criticise other managers. I said much more. I didn’t get a reoly.
New Post!
You won’t get a reply, because they’ve done their job, you’ve read the column, the article or clicked on a webpage with some adverts on it, all it’s designed to do is provoke a response.
Look at Myles Palmer with the Gallas story, changing it later in the day or Piers Morgan wanting Wenger out one week and then apologising the next.
Hi Everyone!
First time posting on Le Grove, although I’ve been a daily reader for many months.
At the start of the summer I found myself in a unfortunetely familiar position. We had won nothing, players had left and although we had promises of new players coming in, I couldn’t help but feel I would be disapointed.
However talking to my friends, also avid Arsenal supporters, I found that my view that something wasn’t quite right at Arsenal and we needed to step up to get anywhere this season, wasn’t shared.
So I did what I thought was the ‘right thing’, kept my mouth shut, and scoured the web for every bit of promising news I could find. A rollercoaster of a journey.
I have to say though, a highlight of that journey, was finding Le Grove.
Initially I found the site looking for transfer news and gossip, but everyday found myself looking forward more & more to reading Geoff or Pedro’s article, and of course all the comments that flooded in day after day.
At last I had found people that shared my view. I wasn’t alone. Everything fell into place.
However, desperate to hang on to a glimmer of hope of the ‘everythings great, Arsnene knows’ mentality, I refrained from posting. Untill now.
Yes, things have maybe got a little better with the result against Chelsea, but I cant help but think like some Grovers suggested, it’ll be another false dawn.
We’ve Wigan & Middleborough next before the visit of Liverpool, and whilst I hope I’m wrong, it could be another 2 poor results, then we’ll go and smash Liverpool.. a pattern is emerging.
Anyway, the kidy-winks are out tonight, lets hope they keep their momentum going and do what Chelsea couldn’t against Burnley. Would be really good if a few of our lot really excell and make Arsene think about putting them in against Wigan.
I’m going for 4-1 – C’mon you Gooners!
Goonerb… Wrong post mate!
