Don’t sugar coat it… that was a warning + Cesc quitting?

by & filed under Uncategorized.

I’ve just got back from the game and although I am chuffed to bits about the result, I am by no means pleased about a lot of things though. If you want to read a report about how great our come back was, go somewhere else. My biggest concern is that this current team and the way it is being set up wont sustain a challenge this year.

Firstly the team selection…

Eboue played a whole season at right back and he did ok. So for me, if Sagna is injured, Eboue should cover.

Arsene put Song there, a defensive midfielder by trade… and not a great one at that. He was terrible in the first half.

If you have a right winger with the ability of Walcott but he is tired… you don’t put someone with the attacking ability of Eboue in his position.

Wenger put Eboue wide right.

Also, if Everton have a player as monstrous as Fellani in the middle of the park… surely putting Denilson in the team makes no sense? Denilson doesn’t have the strength and he doesn’t have the height to compete with players like that.

The first half was fucking woeful. Denilson looked so far out of his depth it was unfair. He was dispossessed by Osman then he didn’t track back so he missed the run of the Everton man who buried the return pass for the first goal. Stuff like that is midfield basics and it is shocking to see such mistakes at this level. He was poor for the whole half… passes going a stray, getting knocked off the ball and failing to pick up players in the middle.

For me, once a team has the beating of you in the middle of the park… you are going to struggle to control the game. Bar an RvP shot… not much happened up front. The fans were getting restless and the game finished 0-1 at half time.

The second half started with a forced change. Kolo went off with shoulder damage which forced Le Boss to bring on Theo and move Eboue to right back. He also moved Song over to his favoured second position in the middle of defence.

Now Arsenal looked like a team. The game began to flow our way almost immediately. Sammy boy spanked the ball low into the corner early on to get the ball rolling. 1-1 and we looked like we meant business.

Theo gave us a new dimension and gave the team an outlet other than Sammy. The passes started to connect and Everton didn’t really know what to do.

The second goal came from some great work in the midfield… the ball ended up with Ade who decided to cut back instead of shoot… he laid it off to Cesc who fired at Howard… the rebounded save looped up and RvP nodded it into the bottom left corner narrowly missing the boot of the incoming defender. 2-1 and a damn good job to.

The next incident came when Nasri collapsed just outside the Everton box. Nasri got up, but he looked in pain and was duly substituted.

Then something I hadn’t seen since I was a wee child… Diaby… fit and raring to go!

He was great as well… he is so skilful and he always want the ball at his feet. He was holding up play well and he showed good strength… for me, he makes Denilson look like a reserve… which in all fairness, at any other club wouldn’t be an insult. I think Arsenal fans have to pray to whichever footballing God owes them a favour… pray to him and beg that Diaby can make the jump this season.

He linked up with Theo well for the last goal… he played a one two with Theo and held his line like Adebayor could only dream of… laid it off to Theo who buried it precisely between Howards legs! Superb… it was great to see Messimars get a goal after taking an outrageous amount of flak after the England game.

We won the game 3-1 and it was a pleasing result. We showed great character to come back from 1-0 down against a resilient team but don’t be fooled… some weaknesses were exposed today and they need addressing.

Denilson is not good enough at the moment. His sloppy play inhibits our ability to attack and defend. Cesc doesn’t want to get forward in case the young Brazilian drops a clanger and the defence are always on edge because he doesn’t know how to track and he quite often gets out muscled. I hate to say it… but why sell Berto? He may have been poor last year… but if I was booted out of a team in the fashion Berto was I’d probably have trouble raising my game. There were limitations to his game, but he’d be doing a far better job than Denilson at the moment.

I have no problem promoting youth when it is exceptional talent… but for me players like Denilson (Does he represent Brazil at U21 level? Did he get in the Olympic Squad?) and Song are not exceptional talent… hey, they might be in 3 painful years time… but do we really want to wait that long? I thought that getting into a top 4 team was supposed to require a bit of hard work? I didn’t know the deal was you sign at 17 and then get in regardless of how ready you are.

I mean Denilson isn’t even close to being a great player… so why is he entertained for the first team? What sort of a message does it send out? If Arsene rates you… you’ll get played and played and played until you come good? I thought the Arsenal motto was ‘If you’re good enough, you’re old enough’… maybe it should read, ‘If I think you have potential, but you’re not quite ready, I’ll keep you in there till you are good enough’.

Think of the great midfielders we’ve had… Petit, Overmars, Gilberto, Parlour, Edu… I mean even the Grimster would do a better job than Denilson.

I think Wenger needs to realise that there are only so many times he can pull the ‘Lets take a striker and play him in defence’ trick… if you buy a defender, play him in defence… stop assuming our players are good enough to play anywhere.

Song is either a centre back or a defensive midfielder. He is not a right back and it is really unfair to put him there. The same for Eboue… stop persisting with him out wide… he is a right back cover at best. As for Diaby… I pray we never see him out wide again.

Theo is 19… if he is too tired to play… there is something seriously wrong there. If you can’t play him… put Vela, Wilshere or Ramsey there. We all know what they can do and that is a hell of a lot more than Eboue can.

Finally… I do wish Arsene would stop underestimating crap teams. We are the only team in the Prem who don’t seem to ever have tactics. We just play our game and hope for the best… why don’t we nullify opposition players or at least pick a team capable of matching another teams strengths? This current crop of kids isn’t as good as any of our previous teams… they need tactics… they need guidance. I don’t think they are getting that at the moment.

Good news is this… Samir Nasri will banish the ghost of Hleb, Silvestre looks like a supremely astute signing, Eboue played well at right back, RvP is so close to going on a helluva scoring run, Ade played very unselfishly (offside too many times though), Cesc played with a lot of purpose today and we secured 3 points against a good team.

The fact still remain that there are 3 other great teams we are competing with… we need to start upping it otherwise we are going to find ourselves getting punished when we start playing the big boys.

At the end of the day a victory is a victory. I am reporting from the perspective of someone who wants us to challenge for the title this year and currently I can’t see that and apparently, nor can Cesc (or Theo).

We were all pleased that he came out and said what he said in the week… but he didn’t deny the comments did he? He knows we’re not winning anything with Denilson in the middle of the park and he knows that with a few injuries we are already down to bare bones. Plenty of Arsenal fans talk about having patience… well, when the golden boy of the project has had enough… is it any surprise a vast majority of the Gooner faithful have as well?

People talk about us selling Thierry Henry and how it was great for the club that we sold him because he was inhibiting the youngsters. No one ever points out the reason he behaved as he did in the last season… he didn’t like playing with what he believed to be players beneath him.

How wrong would I be if I said that maybe Cesc is starting to feel that way? All your mates in the national team are playing with world class players… and you’re lining up with kids. You could say he is forgetting his routes… maybe you’re right, but he would have a got a chance anywhere he went because he is a top talent… he doesn’t need to offer us Charity and I think Arsene needs to realise that.

World class players like playing with world class players… even if they don’t win anything at least they know their club gave it a good go by signing the best they could.

The attraction of playing for a big club is trophies, not critical acclaim for pretty football.

Anyway, have a great Sunday Grovers!

werehave u been BBK his already been at our club training and wenger loved him. and he was playing madrid couple of years ago now hisi n the USA were there Football league finish’s in November.

    were have u been??

  2. Hughsie

But then that would defeat the purpose of him coming to Arsenal on loan to get match practice….. It’s media fluff, you’re wasting your time even entertaining the thought.

  3. raif

maybe i am. but why i got all day so it dont matter. and im getting annoyed going on about how weak our team is. as we already know that one

  4. marylandgunner

Great post Pedro. You summed it all up quite nicely. I almost choked on my coffee when Everton scored in the first 10 minutes. But alas, I was not surprised. I agree with you Pedro . . . why do we look like we think our stuff don’t stink, and that we are just going to steam roll every team.

Geoff posted this some time ago about corner kicks, that he felt that every time a team had a corner against us, it was the equivilent of having a PK. I feel quite similar when we play the other teams in the EPL . . . there are no “easy” wins for us. It could be a loss or a draw, and the reality is that should NEVER be the case. Not with Arsenal. Not with a team like we have.

It’s not like we don’t have the money. It’s not like we don’t have the players. So what is it? Are some Grovers right . . . is this an experiment for Arsene? I surely hope not.

We play in Turkey this coming week. This will be no easy game. So, where does Arsenal go from here? Who gets the nod for the upcoming CL game? I hate to say it Grovers, but I think that we might be looking at this type of playing/squad set-up all season. I mean seriously, does anyone really see Arsene having a moment . . . “maybe I need to change things up . . . maybe Pedro is right . . . I don’t want to loose Cesc.” Probably not.

  5. Keyser

Where would Beckham play ?! He can’t move, he’s been paralysed ever since that riding accident with Rebecca Loos..

Diaby will probably be played on the left with Denilson in the middle.

  6. Angry Loner

    Mary;

You’re probably right, but Im gonna keep on bangin the Djourou drum till Wenger hears it!

I think Wenger has decided Denilson IS our DM, so that’ll be it really.

  7. marylandgunner

Angry Loner, you are right. Sadly Denilson struggled yesterday. I kept on thinking about how we would have performed if Chelsea played us yesterday. The thought was scary. 3 or 4 to nothing is what kept on coming up in my mind. Scary stuff.

  8. Pedro

Beckham is 33 and tied down to a long and lucrative deal… definitely forget that one.

I don’t mind him coming over to train… but I think Milan are also in for him (A battle to get him over to train… my oh my).

Maryland, no one wants to lose Cesc… and I think he would stay a) if we one something b) if we bought a couple of top players.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that we are literally 1 or 2 signings away from a sustained challenge.

Are we still able to get players on loan or has that ship sailed as well?

Baptista misses us… he was an amazing player! ;-)

  9. Angry Loner

I think Wenger is under pressure this season. A lot more than he has ever been under and to be honest, Im not sure he is reacting well to it.

He is becoming very very stubborn, so much so, that even Benitez would be embarassed! His team line ups have been quite bizarre at times, he refused to spend money, he refused to address the CM problem and when the kids beat Sheff Utd 6 nil that was his chance to tell everyone, thats why he didnt spend any money! And then the 1st team went and got beat by Hull in the next game!

I am all for promoting the kids like ramsey, Vela, Bendtner, JD, Wilshire, but if he bought a top quality defensive midfielder, who would that hamper? What kid is ready for that job?

    Denilson? F*ck off!

  10. Pedro

If anything is hampering Denilson at the moment, it is himself.

Does playing someone who is not ready make them a better player, or does it break them?

  11. Pedro

Manchester United are ready to sell midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

The News of the World says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to off-load Hargreaves after becoming fed up with his inconsistency and constant injuries.

Fergie was startled Hargreaves’ best games for the club last term were at right back when he stood-in for crocked Gary Neville.

Hargreaves form and fitness has also left him sidelined by England since May.

But he could find a home at Manchester City and there is likely to be interest from Barcelona.

  12. Pedro

Question 1: Would you take him?

Question 2: Is it wrong to admire Fergie for offloading a player who is never fit and under performs?

  13. Pedro

I was thinking about him… if he’d been blooded at 22 would he have been a better player?

    I’m like the question master!

  14. marylandgunner

Pedro, I agree . . . if we don’t win a trophy this season, Barcelona will come in with a sweet deal at the end of the season, and Cesc is gone. I would hate to loose him, but he is not going to stay and not win anything. Even Torres, who he is friends with, would tell him . . . “mate, you have to go if you want to win anything.”

Pedro, if we can “make it” (and that is a big “if” right now) to January without getting far off the pace of Chelsea, Man U. or Liverpool we might have a chance. If we drop points to Man U. Chelsea and/or anyone else . . . well, that could make for a mountain for us to climb, and that would really suck because it would heap a ton of pressure on the lads to perform in the CL, and if they were bounced out of that . . . well, the world might emplode.

    And we don’t want that.

  15. Hughsie

Oh come on, News of the World, in the same breath were printing how Fabregas was practically out the door, they’re about as credible as an PHD thesis entirely sourced from google. It’s waaaaay to early for any solid articles about transfers, right now they’re the print media equivilant of a game of Marco Polo.

Anyway, if Arsenal started booting every player that was never fit then who’d we have left? The team would consist of Fabregas, Clichy, Adebayor and Almunia.

  16. marylandgunner

    1. No
    2. No

We are not in a position to offload anyone. If you were to run a difficult/emotional/insightful poll today Pedro, here is what I would ask.

Of the players that are injured consistently, who would you off load? I would be curious as to the result.

Here is who I would off load:
    Thomas “Mystery Injury” Rosicky

This guy is always injured. If Diaby can stay fit for the rest of the season, I would say that he might stay my hand, but if not, cut him loose.

  17. Pedro

    Right, I am off out.

Regardless of the credibility… Fergie booted out Saha on the basis of injury.

You are right though… we’d have no squad.

I’m off out now! Have a great afternoon.

  18. Angry Loner

That article about Hargreaves says United would accept offers of around £15 million!!!!!

In the same paragraph as them telling all he’s out the door due to constant injury and poor performances!

  19. Hughsie

Rosicky is injured because no one thought to tell him he’d been working out the wrong way for his entire life, which has led to the muscles in his legs developing in a different and more fragile way that most ‘normal’ profession athletes.

They’ve got him on some wierd special program to rectify it, he’ll be back when he’s back.

  20. kelsey

Top tip for Manchester United fans: don’t waste money on expensive new kits every season. Simply strap a large inflatable penis to your forehead, and everyone will immediately know which team you support.

  21. kelsey

A Man Utd fan dies on match day and goes to heaven in his Man Utd shirt. He knocks on the old pearly gates and out walks St. Peter in a Chelsea scarf.
“Hello mate” says St. Peter, “I’m sorry, no Man Utd fans in heaven.”
“What ?” exclaims the man, astonished.
“You heard, no Man Utd fans.”
“But, but, but, I’ve been a good man”, replies the Man Utd supporter.
“Oh really”, says St. Peter. “What have you done, then ?”
“Well” said the guy, “Three weeks before I died, I gave 10 pounds to the starving children in Africa”.
“Oh” says St. Peter. “anything else?”
“Well, 2 weeks before I died I also gave 10 pounds to the homeless.”
    “Hmmm. Anything else?”
“Yeah. A week before I died I gave 10 pounds to the Albanian orphans.”
“Okay”, said St. Peter, “You wait here a minute while I have a word with the governor.”
Ten minutes pass before St. Peter returns. He looks the bloke in the eye and says, “I’ve had a word with God and he agrees with me. Here’s your thirty quid back, now fuck off”.

  22. Hughsie

Pedro – Saha was a) always injured but b) also surplus to requirements at United, he was like, 500th choice striker behind even Frazier Campbell, Danny Wellbeck and that joker from Angola who scored a goal in an African Nations Cup once.

Even if he wasnt praying at the alter St. John the Baptist every night it made financial sense (he’s a money hole that brings nothing to the club off field) and squad sense (not as good as some of the kids in front of him) to sell him. Pick a reason, they’re all good enough to justify selling Saha, but all three are a deal sealer.

  23. patthegooner

Anyone else get the impression that Korluka just does not want to play for the Spuds today. This is great viewing on a Sunday Afternoon

  24. Geoff

If we don’t play Song or Denilson and we play with Diaby (or Ramsey) and Theo we’ll beat this shower of shit 10 nil.

  25. kelsey

No one likes to see a player like Corluka injured, but that gomes(who used to be in the band santana in the 70′s) is fucking worse than robinson, every time he punches the ball he injures his own players, what a cunt.

Stoke must be the tallest team man for man in the PL.

  26. ethangunner

so if Man U pick up 3 points from there game in hand we are 5th ??

    1 Chelsea 8 16 20
    2 Liverpool 8 7 20
    3 Hull City 8 0 17
    4 Arsenal 8 10 16
    5 Man Utd 7 8 14
    6 Aston Villa 8 2 14
    7 Portsmouth 8 -4 13

    great!!!!
    concur with the post ..
    been out drinking .. !
    and beaver watching ..

    hows that???
theo and cesc being linked with moves away and
its only natural to want more money if you can get it !
so who can blame them really ?!

this experiment is working just fine ! eHh ?!

  27. Paulinho

Say what you want about the spuds, but I can’t think of a boring game they’ve participated in for years. Something happens in every game with them.

  28. Confidentgoner

Hull is back to third spot after beating Aston Villa ! Wao, they are on a roll. Anyone think they can challenge for 1-5 spot? their spirit and determination plus technique is a testament to the coach.

  29. SkandiBird

Note sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I was just looking in on the Arsenal website for any news on Samir and this statement was sitting there -
”Cesc Fabregas has dismissed reports that he has turned down a new contract as “mischief-making”.

It was suggested in Sunday’s newspapers that the Spanish midfielder had refused a deal, perhaps paving the way for a move away from Emirates Stadium. However the 21-year-old has flatly denied the story.

“A newspaper report suggesting that I have rejected a new contract is untrue,” he said.

“The article is just mischief-making. Everybody knows I have a long-term contract and that I am happy here. I’m focussed on doing my best for Arsenal.”

Well, I thought it makes for a good end to to-day don’t you think, together with the Stoke v Tottenham game and 3-1 yesterday, I shall now take in a glass or two of red wine and sleep very soundly tonight. Happy week ahead boys & girls, CL next in Turkey live on ITV4 and I feel good and positive again.

  32. simon mcahon

Great post pedro , WENGER NEEDS TO STOP THIS FUCKING EXPERIMENTING , and underestimating other teams,
PLAY YOUR BEST 11 WIN THE GAME FIRST ,then make the changes,
song, Ebuless, denilson no way good enough for the first 11………………..

  33. Wrighty7

    Great post fellas.

Can I ask everyone on Le-Grove this question please?

Does it make me a racist to say that Diaby looks like the Pepperami character on the TV adverts?

  34. Doublegooner

    Hey Pedro;

I have a 7am flight so hopefully my mate is connected out there, unless he’s already told me to fuck off by then !

I was in Bucharest eating fucking roast bear with 20 other goons the day the spuds made us piss ourselves when we heard villa were doing them 4-1 at home by HT.

After the 5 th text, my mate he told me to go fuck myself & dont bother ever calling or speaking to him again !!

  35. Gunner8

    Virulent post… …understandable ATM

Why did MOTD not show either the Hibbert incident or the RVP Penalty challange… …hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  36. Sparrow

    Wrighty,

Saw your post about Diaby, found it very funny, don’t worry about the haters matey, keep up the good work!!

  37. patthegooner

Just went around a few Spurs blogs for a giggle, you should all try it,

It is very satisfying, They are actually thinking that they are doomed to relegation.

Can’t see it myself, I think they have the quality and money to solve it in the transfer window. It would be funny as fuck if they did though.

  38. Paulinho

Funny thing is, they are a good team when they get going and more than capable of giving us big trouble in a few weeks. They did well against Chelsea at stamford bridge and tend to play to the level of their opposition.

  39. avenell

Looking at Diaby yesterday when he came on he seems to have filled out a bit. hopefully it may keep him out of the medical centre with a bit of muscle tissue around his joints..

  40. gnarleygeorge9

Just read back through the most recent comments, so you all got a laugh then. Could they go down, COULD THEY :?:

  41. gnarleygeorge9

October 29th, If you are in London, don’t miss it, Comedy Central are going to be @ The Emirates Stadium. Plenty of gut busting laughs, starring Jermaine Jenarse(very popular in the Spus shower room after the game) & David “The Mouth” Bentley. He will always tell you he should be given/ing the “head job” @ The Lane.

  42. mark

lol gg9…can’t wait for that one…:p
but if sp*ds do go down then the local derby days are going to be missed bad

  43. Danish Gooner

Let us get it straight……..Everton is a crap one dimensional team they couldnt do what Hull did if they tried 1000 times.I was never really worried about the win even after another calamity blunder but we wont face many teams as poo as Everton.Liked the look of Silvestre even though he played for the scum he actually did what any defender should do hoof it out when you are under pressure, take notice Willy.Song is poo and so is Denilson but to their defence they are played out of position.Denilson will make it if Wenger starts playing him in his right position Song never will to slow and ponderous and Ade had another stinker………..useless cunt !!!!!!!!!

  44. gnarleygeorge9

One Day Ramos has reportedly stated in Variety Magazine, via an interpreter: -

“We’ve been providing a great 90 minute comedy routine this year. We are pleased with our show, so ofcourse we can’t wait for October 29 when we take it up the Arse”.

  45. gnarleygeorge9

Spuds apparently are considering enlisting Terry Vegetables as One Days understudy, just incase that one day comes, which could be sooner than later, Chamone

  46. raif

    HELLO EVERYONE.

i would just like to tell all of the Le-grove faithfull on here that im officially a dad tonight.

we have a new arsenal fan in the ranks HeHeHe!!

    :D

  47. Hughsie

What concerns me most is that whilst your wife (i assume) was giving birth you were on here posting about whether or not Beckham would come to Emirates on loan.

    Congratulations none the less though.

  48. raif

    Hughsie

If u wanna take a smart little pop at me on a personal level i suggest you hold ur bloody tounge fella. (well in this case ur Index fingers)

as i was only making a convo about the David-B loan thing.
i never new you would get ur feelings hurt over it. and still have the need to mention it Hours after the comment was made.
if you dont like it thats fine but having the need to make sarcy half witted comment like that is Weak in my view

  49. ethangunner

    raif

well done mate . now the fun begins !
get used to a long future of being 3rd in line, in importance in the family house hold :)

welcome to being a father …

    Gr8 post.

The Walcott stuff in the papers is beyond hilarious. Shitty England beat Croatia, and he scores a hat trick. Suddenly, we’re not shit, he’s the saviour, he’s a God, he’s THE ONE – etc etc. It’s so ridiculous, anyone who actually watched Theo knows that he needs time, still. He’s finding his feet with us though which is great.

Mmm… Adebayor… I really hate this guy. After all that shit in the summer – and he really did squeeze for a better deal – I really don’t think he’s worth £80,000 a week. You must be kidding me. Wenger is a state man, Ade had an amazing season last year, but I think he’s been found out. He really can’t dribble past people. He just can’t do it. His composure is hot and cold and the amount of off sides is silly really. How I crave a new world-beater striker with a dribble.

Anyways, at least we won. Please, let’s go on a good run (crosses fingers nervously).

  51. Moray

Song gave the ball away time after time. I think that’s particularly dangerous for this Arsenal side, as we’re at our best playing the relentless pressure game. Remember last season when we kept the ball for days at a time…? Denilson does the same. If Denilson is a first choice player, then I seriously worry about the quality in depth at the club. He was shit last season too.

VP needs some shooting practice, but at least he was there to shoot. Ade…it pains me to think we could have offloaded him and perhaps secured Villa or Eto’o for around the same price. We’re paying some guy 80k a week to swan around offside for most of the game.

Our team feels very light at the moment…you can see that Silvestre has benefitted from some proper defensive coaching at Man U and looks better defensively than Toure or Gallas. What is our #1 central midfield pairing if Fabrgeas gets injured? It makes my hair stand on end…

  52. ethangunner

been preaching the same theory for months neon ! well done …

  53. Hughsie

Adebayor isnt in the side to run at and dribble past defenders day in day out, if that’s what you expect from him on gameday then you’re vastly overestimating his ability.

  54. Confidentgoner

Judge him (Ade) on his goal haul, as simple as that. Watched the Arsenal Porto game on Arsenal TV and I must say it was a smashing game. The team played as a unit. Must be their best performance this year and Porto were not shite.

  55. ikon

i really think we are going all out for champions league.
I dont think epl is in our priorities… a 4th place would be happily taken by wenger. The team looks an altogether different one in ucl matches. i dunno why.

About Song… he is a helluva CB. Very strong. but he is the slowest player in the squad and i dunno how he can play alongside cesc when his primary job would be to win the ball back from the opp.

Walcott is still the best sub in the pl matches. Whether he can improve his game enough to demand a start I am not sure. If you ask me…. this is as best as he can get.

Ramsey… welll I disagree with the point that he can play only when cesc isnt playing.
Dont think so. Both cesc and Ramsey are pretty good defensively, Ramsey is faster and stronger.
Cesc needs rest while on the field, his burden of dictating attacks can be shared very well by Ramsey.

IMHO…. we can get much much from Ramsey than we are getting from Denilson and Song (as a DM) put together.

Please…. let Ramsey starts alongside Cesc….. I bet it will be a huge difference.

    Ikon,

have u seen him play DM? Why is nobody talking about Bischlap? Thought he is now fit to fight for a first team place?

  57. Damian

The problem with Diaby is he is attack minded & wants to score not defend or work hard covering all over the pitch if he would embrace defending as his first job he could be great I was sick when i saw the team with Eboue playing ? & Song at right back Eboue is inept at RW but not a bad RB & he didn,t even play RW half the time he was up font
