So Alex Hleb, the guy that was shit for 3 years has nailed his colours to the mast, he calls young player of the year Fabregas, selfish, strange that, Hleb scored 2 against Cesc’s 7 and had 4 assists against Cesc’s 17, which incidentally was a Premiership record, so where is here coming from? I think he worked in the same power station that Eduardo lived near when he got his super powers, only Hleb got too much and it cooked his brain, muppet.
Still no one can slag off the chosen one and stay, so well done Hleb, you will get your wish and Cesc won’t complain, so it leaves the doors open to sign a big player for big money, or does it?
The Hleb story, which was an exclusive here on the Grove last week has proved once again that player power works, don’t forget Wenger signed him, he wasn’t from the ranks and at over £11 million, he didn’t come cheap.
Wenger needs to sign a replacement that won’t take years to bed in, my money is on Barry and shift the team around, he may even go for a winger like SWP or he may get Veloso and put Nasri in, whatever he does he needs to do it now, before pre season.
Arshavin, I could go either way on, at least Wenger can’t say he doesn’t have the money now.
Ramsey is saying he hopes to start against West Brom, so maybe he will feature more in the Hleb rather than the Flamster role, whatever he does, he needs to be positive and move fast, maybe YaYa, who knows, you got it …Arsene does.
Someone needs to explain the finances to the boss though, the stadium cost £450 million, not a billion.
We moved to the Grove to compete but now he says we need £24 mil a year for 17 years, bollocks Arsene, sing another song, this one is getting boring.

Yes, Pleb is working the press and trying to force the clubs hand. So he’s a complete knob. But he didn’t actually slag Fab4 off. All he said was that Cesc shoots more. Thats hardly a big statement as Pleb couldn’t shoot into a Durex. And its very likely this is a translation so the word “selfish” could have been mistranscribed.

Choy, go look when Hleb is at his best its always as a provider to an out & out striker. If Hleb had been played behind Henry the season before last you’d probably have seen a completely different player. He excelled for Stuttgart & for Belarus from the middle, when he was moved out wide in Stuttgart his form disappeared & he had the same moan he is having now.
He has never been a free scoring player & if you thought he was then you need to look at Wenger, after all it was him that signed Hleb.

GMR -that’s interesting you say that. I saw around 10 games last season and I doidn’t really notice this, but I wasn’t especially looking out for Hleb’s demeanour – all I got from him was the frustration at constantly being hacked down by lumpen defenders of limited ability.
What was his position when he played for Stuttgart ? I’ve really considered if he was supposed to be a central midfielder – he obviusly isn’t a DM – so he’s a creative midfielder is he ? Or maybe he occupies the slot behind the lone striker in a 4-5-1 ?

Charybdis, yeah on several occasions last season when subs were made & he was moved, he put his head up towards the sky’s as if to say ‘Why me’. It wasn’t professional at all & the guy is paid a fortune to play football so he shouldn’t really be moaning especially to the press. I can however understand his frustration.
He is more a creative midfielder but I think his best form was always in the front of a diamond formation where he had a completely free role.

This time last year I was praying we’d sell Hleb, like most of us, but to his credit he came on leaps and bounds and had a great season. I was at a point where I was pleased to see his name on the team sheet everytime he played…….
….but it was one good seaon, for me thats not enough time to form an eternal love for the player, which is why his leaving now, for me, is no big deal. Thanks for a good season. Now Go, lets move on. I’m finding David Bentley’s continued link with Sp*rs quite amusing. When Bentley was at Norwich on loan, I remember he returned to Arsenal due to injury and his loan spell was cut short. I was with a few mates in the Highbury Barn having a beer before a Wednesday night game (can’t for the life of me remember who we were playing), anyone else who was there that night will remember it… Basically Bentley was at the bar with who we imagined is his agent and another bloke, they were having a drink. A few lads in the pub started singing songs at him like “walking in a Bentley wonderland” etc – he was loving it and holding his pint in the air. I had a great video i took on my old mobile of people sing “Bentely give us a song” – to which he raised his glass and sang “We hate Tottenham and we hate Tottenham… we are the Tottenham haters” – until his agent told him to pipe down. I would love to post that clip (if i could find it) to a Sp*rs website just so they can see what their Arsenal reject summer signing really thinks of them!

That’s a shame if Hleb is pushing for a move – although if he’s said “I want to go to Barcelona” there’s not much room for ambiguity there. I admit I do like watching him play, the way he dribbled, found space, slotted in a pass and unlocked the massed defences we generally played against. I recall reading a lot of match reports applauding his performances and comparing him to George Best with regard to his balance and dribbling ability. I know it’s understandable to get annoyed by what he is quoted as saying but I do feel there is a degree of press invention and hyperbole in their reporting – people forget it’s not the press’ job to inform people of the facts, their job is to sell papers by ANY means necessary.

whether or not the press are trying to stir up controversy (as they always tend to do anyway), it’s safe to say Hleb is not trying to endear himself to anyone affiliated with AFC.
We can always tell when there’s a slow news day on the Arsenal front because old interviews are reprinted with particular choice snippets being re highlighted and twisted to look like new quotes.
Either way I doubt many on here and amongst gooners as a whole want the likes of Hleb and Ade playing for our club, considering the way theyve carried on this summer, press or no press! I repeat good riddance!

The thing is with Hleb – and i have always said it, is that while he is clearly a talented player, he just isnt overly effective.
He has plenty of skill, but his end product is not great, he doesnt score goals, and he doesnt actually get that many assists.
And now,he clearly doesnt want to play for us.
Its a shame Rosicky is made of glass, as IMO he is twice the player Hleb is.
Mind you, to be fair, i dont think he was slagging Cesc off, i think it was actually a bit of a compliment, lost in translation!

I am not fussed about the story… Hleb said he was moving last week becuase two top ten clubs in Europe were in for him.
As a fan, I found that way more offensive than anything he said about Cesc.
If we lose Ade, Hleb and Flamini… that is more than 3 steps back. We’ve lost a defensive midfielder who was the replacement for Gilberto. We’ve lost Hleb who, despite being ineffective, worked well with Cesc. We may lose a 30 goal a season striker.
Add to that the fact that we were already a thread bare squad last season…
There are no guarantee’s over Rosicky, RvP and Eduardo staying fit. Gallas had a miracle season last year with injuries… we’re not signing a defender.
I don’t mean to be negative, but you have to look at our squad realistically…

Arsenal seem to have taken the decision to finally go ahead with transferring one of their most experienced and loyal players.
Gilberto Silva has been, since his transfer from Atlético Mineiro right after he helped his country to victory in the World Cup of 2002, one of Arsene Wenger’s best buys.
But alas time has been catching up with him (he is now 32) managing only 17 appearances during last season after losing his place to the younger Flamini who has since moved on to what he considers the greener pastures of AC Milan.
Arsene Wenger appears however to have decided that Gilberto will not be the one to replace the gap left by Flamini as Arsenal have already send a fax to Greek club Panathinaikos inviting them to London for face to face talks about Gilberto’s transfer.
The meeting has already been set for next Wednesday and Panathinaikos are very keen to conclude what for them will be a major scoop.
It appears the player has already been talking terms with the Greek club and all that remains is to satisfy Arsenal’s demands.
Panathinaikos are offering the player £2m per year in a three year contract which is what the player has demanded. The third year will come into force if Gilberto plays in 50% of the games the year before.
The player’s agent Nicola Arkouri has indicated to the Greek press that his client will consider the offer seriously.

I’ve had the privilege of working with some top models in my work Pedro, a couple of whom are always in the papers…they take the approach that it isn’t worth employing people to deny everything written about them that’s untrue – maybe Arsenal are employing the same approach?
I know from experience that Newspapers are more than happy to claim direct quotes when no such quote exists.

Not responding to negative reports is detrimental to the clubs image amongst the fans and the players. That is why ManU, Madrid, Barca, Milan will all issue denials immediately.
If you hear a report of Sneijder leaving for ManU… the next day a denial is issued… The same goes for ManU and Ronaldo… Milan and Kaka…
It is not often footballers or managers have to come out and deny saying something that has been quoted.

QofS, an individual model cannot be compared to a big business. I understand your point but for a model no publicity (whether true or not) is bad publicity. You only have to look at the likes of Kate Moss & Naomi Campbell to see that, nothing they do no matter how bad affects them for any length of time & infact after stories have broken they end up getting better deals than the ever had before. For Arsenal its a lot different, they are reliant on fans whether they are true fans or gloryhunters & unfortunately how they are perceived in the press is vitally important to certain sponsors etc.

I suppose that to Hleb anyone who regularly scores is selfish, meaning he definitely has the wrong idea about football. When you’re in a scoring position it is your duty to take a chance, it is not a selfless act to pass the ball, making a martyr out of yourself is selfish.

Sorry this may be a bit offtrack but one more point about Gilberto and senior players at Arsenal in general… it’s easy to slay Hleb for wanting to leave, but fact is AW dosn’t really give players the chance to finish their careers at Arsenal, even if they’ve expressed the desire to do so. Typical example is Pires, who at 32 was let go on a free transfer. One of the best midfielders in the world not given a 2 year contract at 32! Why, was he that old. I mean surely a compromise could have been made to keep a classy player like him. Anyways, the point is Arsenal is not very loyal to it’s players. Hate to say it, but M.U. have been better to their seniour players than us. Maybe that has something to do with why they’ve been able to win a few trophies the last couple of years and we just came close.

Pierre, okay fair enough they have strengthen, but still kept their experienced players who performed on a high level. Not only that but the reason their younger reinforcements have done so well can be partly attributed to the guidence and support the more experienced players would have given them.
My main point though was about the way Arsenal gets rid of players who still have something to offer (not dead wood) and then we talk about player loyalty. I just feel that maybe it works both ways, thats all.
That doesn’t mean i’m taking Hleb or Ade’s side, as i hate what they’re doing.
Just giving my point of view on treatment of some of the senior players.
Only ones that were treated fairly were Adams, Keown, Bergamp. And that was in another era.

Will Merida ever live up to the hype?? I watched him at the under 19’s championships last year & he was pretty rubbish throughout (well rubbish is unfair), unspectacular & didn’t really do anything at all.
Looking at a couple of other blogs today & people are going so over the top about Vela, I really feel sorry for the kid. He is going to be expected to take on the world & be like Maradona from the start. They were saying how many shirts have been sold with his name & number 12 on, most of it is based on youtube footage of him taking on Ramos. People really go overboard based on a 2 minute clip!!

Dobbie, I agree with you on the treatment of the older players, I mentioned earlier I think we need Gilberto, offer him a 2 year deal, surely he’s deserved that much at least. I also don’t understand the selection policy for keeping the youngsters, I know its old news, but Bently released, last year we let Larssen go and he came back and shafted us, yet Eboue is safe and sound. Sometimes I really don’t understand.

Pierre.. I also think we should give the current youngsters a chance and not let them go. To be honest i don’t know much apart from the senior team but i read recently that 6 English players were given contracts with Arsenal and these may well be the future for us in a few years time. It’d be great to be able to call on home grown english players, who are just as skillful as their european counterparts. That’s what i hope the academy will produce for us.

QoS is porbably referring to the Arsenal’s perceived lack of fight whne they would get pushed around by the “physical” teams in the north. I see there’s another scare mongering article in the mirror, saying how Arsenal can’t compete, how we desperately need to sell to Usmanov & that the Highbury square project isn’t going to bring in the money we need blah, blah, blah!!
Its SO boring listening to them go on. Something that I was told a while ago now is that the credit crunch is a concern to Arsenal but only until next year. Arsenal took out a 125 million pound loan for the Highbury Square & also for facilities for the board most of which has a great interest rate, the term of the loan is 38 months which means its repayable in Sept 2009. Thats the only worry they have, if numerous people withdraw from completing their purchases at Highbury square the club would have to cover the cost of the 125 million repayment in one hit or would somehow have to refinance it (which wouldn’t be so easy in the current climate). That may even be why they have played down the 70million transfer budget. Come January 2010 (as the transfer window will be shut by the time they have to repay the 125 million in 2009) Arsenal will know exactly where they stand & will then be able to compete with any club (barring Chelski) for a player!!
I just don’t understand why the press keep insisting we’re broke, we aren’t. Besides all this there is no chance it’ll take 17 years to pay off the stadium, not one person has mentioned the fact that both our kit supplier & kit sponsorship deals will both come up for renewal in the next 6 years. With the stadium we now have & with our global branding we’ll get massive deals with companies that will make our current ones look like chicken feed. Those alone will pay off any remaining debt!!

He can’t get out his contract for 2 more years so if he has another good season we will probably get the 30+ million we’re looking for & we’ll have saved ourselves a couple of million in wages (which a new contract will give him). Even if Arsenal get him to sign a new deal on 60-70k a week he’ll still create next summer if someone offers him more.

Let’s for one minute forget about what we think about our club; positive or negative, the players manager, board etc.
I’ll tell you why;
Coz I want to concentrate on the completely fucked up football world we are a (very insignificant) part of.
We post on here, moaning about lack of investment, the paucity of the squad, the crapness of some players, the inability thru design or whatever of the manager to splash the cash on perceived needed signings etc.
But we are in a football worlod that has (to me anyways) gone effin crackers!
Not only are we in a world where average players are earning obscene wages after doing very little, agents leaking stories to papers, hyping up their clients so much so, that the deluded twats think they have invented a cure for cancer, season ticket prices are at rates that the core fans are priced out and the alternative is to subscribe to effin sky sports who, for me, are a main reason why we are in the effin mess in the 1st place!
We have Uefa/Fifa who are happy to see clubs openly tap up players of other teams to such an extent Michelle Platts says its understandable.
We have players who are sooooooo far removed from the real world (bet half of em dont even realise they need a passport to travel abroad coz some flunky sorts that shit out) they swerve off the effin road coz they gotta get by on a measley £55K a week and think the general mug, I mean public will be sympathetic towards their sad plight!
And then we have players who think after one decent season they deserve to be looked upon as world class legends or they will eff off to some club that their agent tells em will give em the dosh their imense talent so obviously deserves.
And we also have the media chinese whispers. Where one story, never mind how effin tenuous or blatantly bogus has the desired effect of creating a whirlwind of shite aimed at a particular club. Then the story is proved to be bollocks. Seeing the spud Lipton’s effort in todays M*rror just made me piss myself.

I know Rico, but that summer of 98 was fantastic,
I have to admit I was gutted not to get a ticket for Wembley but having watched it in the Highbury Barn and being outisde Highbury just after is an experience which was better than than any Wedding (Sorry Wife)
Obsession is not the word and that is why i used to take great offence when other blogs took offense to me stating my concerns and telling me to support another football club

Our club has a responsibility to produce a team of quality ! When ticket pricing was hiked a few years ago , all ticket/share holders got a great email from AFC stating that
they assured the price hike was to ensure we can sustain a GOOD quality of player for the fans to watch every week , to ensure we will remain a top flight team for years to come !!!!!
That justification now is just a fuckin joke !!!

eg. the kleb deal will be linked to any potential manouveres for veloso, toure, anyone else.

Fellas! Fellas! I’ve just heard from BBC World Service that GB is experiencing its worst form of consumer/business confidence since 1992. By the way its sounds like Oz is experiencing its worse case scenario since 1994, or something.
What does that tell you? Well it tells me that if this continues we (both OZ & GB) will go into recession. Gordon Brown reckons it won’t last long, but he would say that coz otherwise he’s out on his arse. Will be anyway, but you all back in Blighty will be the judge there.
So the party is over as far as big spending is concerned with football. So maybe the Arsenal Board are looking @ the Club’s scenario in a more conservative way & saying “we must make responsible financial judement, with respect to the Stadium & ride this “recession”, for use of a better word, out”.

Ethan, fair point, but some of manure’s creditors may not be necessarily football orientated. They have to pay their creditors in turn, so if you have a debt of over £850,000,000, some one is going to come a knocking for their “pound of flesh” or more to the point, what they are owed.
Most manure supporters who live on Goverment benefits can’t relate to having to pay their debts, & I bet they are the ones who give the most shit when they brag about Manure the greatest.

gg9 – A friend of mine who’s a Mechant Banker (!), told me that ManUre’s current debt is unsustainable under it’s current terms and conditions. Basically they only make enough profit to service the loans, NOT repay them! Therefore spending 50m on three players has to come directly from the owners or from further loans! So, like you say, with everyone going to feel the pinch sooner rather than later, those banks are gonna wanna get their money back at some stage…………now that’s scarey!
